An important aspect of the project evaluation process is the achievement of a clear and quantitative understanding of the primary drivers influencing project value and risk. A business scenario-based approach is required to ensure that the project meets value and risk hurdles over the short, medium and longer term. Adopting an optimising approach can aid significantly in the development of a project concept into a business that is optimal and sustainable in the longer term. Through the application of case studies, based on work performed with various mining organisations during the last five years, this paper will demonstrate how project value and robustness can be optimised. Experience has demonstrated that applying this approach results in significant value improvements and risk reduction û primarily by application of a rigorous, fact-based analysis and optimisation process that rapidly increases management team understanding and insight of key driver of value and risk.

"BHP Billiton (BHPB) West Australian Iron Ore (WAIO) conducts an extensive geometallurgy (geomet) program for its iron ore deposits in the Pilbara. The geomet program provides accurate information to infrastructure engineers, resource geologists, mine planning engineers and the technical marketing team on the performance characteristics of iron ores. Performance metrics include production planning, such as lump/fine splits, processing capability such as the level of ultra-fine iron ore and ironmaking blast furnace properties including tumble index (TI) and reduction disintegration index (RDI). Prior to the introduction of the current geomet program in WAIO, basic geometallurgical information was provided at the deposit level, such as deposit lump percentage and head grade chemistry. As the business value of geometallurgy was realised during the growth period of WAIO, the geomet process was reviewed and formalised into five steps: geomet drill planning laboratory measurement data management algorithm development block estimation.The geomet laboratory process produces simulated iron ore products from drill core, which are then subjected to physical geometallurgy test work. With the large amount of geometallurgy data collected, extensive databases are utilised to collate and organise the data to improve its usability within the business. Algorithms are created from the data to predict important geomet variables and a block estimation method is used to estimate geometallurgical properties into resource models. The predicted geometallurgy data is regularly reviewed at the different steps against plant and shipping data to allow refinement of the geometallurgy algorithms. It is also recognised that geomet data can be used to optimise the operations in existing processing hubs for improved production rate. In addition, future geomet programs will focus on generating data from all available drill core programs, not just dedicated geomet drill holes, and will incorporate new types of data, such as hyper-spectral information, for improved geometallurgical estimation.CITATION:Wright, B, Carroll, T, Flanagan, M, Sua, T and Van Dijken, B, 2013. The direct smelting of zinc sulfide con- centrates has been investigated by an extensive series of computer-based thermodynamic equili- brium calculations. The study covers both pure 7.n-S-O-C-N systems and practical concentrate- coal-air-flux systems. It is shown that for a zinc concentrate containing iron and lead sul- tide impurities, a 97% yield of zinc vapour with autogenous operation can be obtained under carefully optimized conditions. The possible integration of this process with existing zinc condensation and recovery processes is Discussed.

The manganese in solution was derived from the weathering of Precambrian manganifer.ous s.edimexsts, None of the deposits are of hydrothermal origin, nor are they related to igneous rocks in any war, other than as ultimate source rocks. There is ho evidence-'t.o.:sugge,st that meta- morphism has been responsible for.the emplacement of any deposit. The tenor of the ore varies'aec'ording'to the quantity of gangue in the orebody and- also to the nature of the part- icular ore minerals. The main ore.mine.rals are the oxides pyrolusite and cryptomelane and the 'o'xide-silicate braunite. The main gangue minerals are hematite, limonite and quartz. The deposits of high grade oreò(-above.45 per cent Mn) range in size from 50 tons to many thousands of tons but most of them are in the 500-5,000-tons r .nge .

The Hamersley Basin of Western Australia, approximately 500 km long by 200 km wide, is recognised globally for its rich endowment of iron ore resources. Two types of bedded iron ore mineralisation are recognised: the Proterozoic hypogene martite-microplaty hematite ores; and the more recent Cenozoic supergene martite-goethite ores. Exploration strategies depend on the style of mineralisation being targeted; however, stratigraphy and structure are fundamental controls on both ore types. Therefore, the ability to visualise the 3D geology of the entire basin is critical for the understanding of iron ore occurrences and their relationship to ore genesis of bedded iron ore mineralisation. However, due to the large size of the basin, generating a 3D geological model of the regional stratigraphy and structure has not been possible, or prioritised, primarily due to software limitations. Recent advances in implicit automated geological modelling presents an ideal opportunity to develop a 3D model of the entire Hamersley Basin. The innovative Loop software was used to model open source geological data (ie geological mapping, outcrop orientation data, and fault data) sourced from the Geological Survey of Western Australia. In addition to generating a 3D geological model, information such as stratigraphic thickness and fault offset information was extracted using the map2loop module and demonstrated its application to exploration targeting. This study demonstrates how a basin-wide 3D geological model was used to conduct a regional structural analysis of the Hamersley Basin. The results of this study provide opportunities for other prospective regions to be rapidly modelled in order to enhance the understanding of the geology and improve exploration targeting.

In an ironmaking blast furnace (BF), molten slag and hot metal form in the softening-melting (cohesive) zone and then trickle through the coke packed bed before being discharged from the taphole. During their downward flow, there are significant interactions occurring between liquids and other phases, such as gas and packing particles. Overall, the formation, dripping and discharging of these liquid phases, particularly molten slag, have a significant impact on BF operations in terms of furnace permeability, fuel consumption, process stability, product quality and ultimately, productivity. Hence, understanding the liquid flow behaviour in the BF lower zone is critical for designing optimal operations. In the current investigation, the flow behaviour of slag droplets was investigated at a mesoscopic level using a combined numerical and physical modelling approach. The interaction between slag and carbonaceous materials was studied using sessile drop wetting experiments, slag flow through a funnel and a high temperature packed bed and the Volume of Fluid (VOF) modelling technique. Molten slag flow and counter-current gas-slag flow in the packed bed was investigated in terms of superficial gas velocity, slag properties and packing structure. The gas-slag flow behaviour at a mesoscopic level was numerically visualised, with gas velocity gradually increased up to the flooding point. The strong interaction between gas and slag was uniquely identified, which can cause localised slag flooding as well as gas channelling. Detailed information concerning the effect on slag holdup distribution, residence time and flow patterns of wettability, slag properties and bed structure were obtained. The current investigation highlights the significant role of research at a mesoscopic level in understanding macroscopic slag flow behaviour. Gas channelling, which is a critical phenomenon in a packed bed with counter-current gas-slag flow, is predicted. It can be speculated that significant gas channelling in the BF can inevitably occur prior to operational limits being reached. In the BF process, the formation of permanent gas channelling and large slag rivulets should be avoided to maintain appropriate contact between phases and hence, furnace permeability.

The height of fracturing (HoF) measures the propagation distance of continuous fracturing from the mining horizon and is also termed the height of cracking (Hebblewhite, 2020; Khanal et al, 2019) or hydrologically the height of groundwater drainage (Tammetta, 2013). In longwall practice, HoF is an important predictive indicator for assessing the dewatering effect of panel extraction on the shallow aquifer and surface flows. The HoF determination is basically dependent on field measurement works, typically using surface extensometer, borehole televiewer imaging, piezometer monitoring, packer testing, borehole breakout logging, and isotopic tracer monitoring (Brown and Walsh, 2022; Corbett, 2022; Hebblewhite, 2020; Holla and Armstrong, 1986; Mills and O’Grady, 1998; Walsh et al, 2022a, 2022b). These methods or tools have been widely applied to observe rock fracturing and groundwater responses to longwalls at Australian coalmines, for example, Dendrobium Mine (Brown and Walsh, 2022; Walsh et al, 2022b), Appin Mine (Walsh et al, 2022a), and Springvale Mine (Corbett, 2022). In Chinese mines, borehole televiewer imaging and packer testing are more frequently used due to convenient instrumentation, quick testing, and not requiring long-term maintenance of the instrumentation boreholes. The HoF determination also involves further raw data interpretations, for which specialist software for data extraction and quantitative criteria for bounding the fracture transition and termination are necessary. By combining the measured fracture distribution and longwall parameters regarding panel geometry and geological settings, several HoF models have been developed for conceptualising the understanding of strata depressurisation and providing mine engineers fast calculation tools for HoF prediction. The Mackie model considered the height of fracturing as the upper bound of fractured zone and revealed that within the fractured zone there are highly connected fractures and accordingly porosity enhancement and groundwater depressurisation, where the fracture network can be less transmissive from the mining horizon up (Hebblewhite, 2020). The fractured zone shares similar fracturing regime but different heights in varying models: HoF is 30 to 58 times of the mining height (t) based on Australian, Soviet and UK experience (Kendorski, 1993, 2006), and 21 to 33 t according to the field measurements in NSW Central Coast, Australia (Galvin, 2016). Some Australian longwall mines adopt Ditton model (Ditton and Merrick, 2014) (Equations 1.1 and 1.2 in Table 1) sourcing from NSW coalfield experience for HoF prediction, while Liu model (Liu, 1981) (Equations 2.1 to 2.4 in Table 1) developed from 27 coalmines in China is frequently used by Chinese coalmines.

In the present work, the microstructure and mechanical properties of structural mortar from glass insulators were studied by X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, microhardness and compression testings. The investigated glass insulators were manufactured between the 1960 and 1990 years and had been used in 230 kV transmission lines. The results evidenced that the structural mortar of glass insulator was replaced from Portland to aluminous cement along the years. The crystalline phases of the mortar were identified and mechanical properties were correlated.

"Flotation of nickel sulfide ores are generally constrained by nickel grade and impurity concentrations (notably magnesium and arsenic) in the product delivered to smelters. Being a physical separation process, flotation recoveries and grades are limited by the grade recovery curve of a particular operation, where increasing product grades are invariably associated with lower recoveries. Impurities put further pressure on this relationship, as removal of impurities from the final concentrate is almost always associated with nickel losses.Western Areas Ltd are developing a proposed expansion to its Cosmic Boy concentrator to treat an impurity stream, that is high in nickel and would otherwise report to tails. Through the use of BioHeap® technology Western Areas aims to recover the nickel and discard the arsenic to tailings. This expansion will consist of a biohydrometallurgical plant that leaches the nickel arsenic minerals, removing the arsenic as a stable iron/arsenic hydroxide, while recovering the nickel as a high-grade nickel sulfide product (at approximately 50 per cent nickel). This can then be blended with final concentrate to improve nickel grades and recoveries, while simultaneously reducing impurity levels or used to produce high value products like nickel sulfate.The introduction of a small microbial leach plant may be beneficial to base metal concentrators constrained by impurities or grade.Citation:Fewings, J, Seet, S, McCredden, T and Fitzmaurice, C, 2016. "BHP Billiton West Australian Iron Ore (WAIO) conducts an extensive geometallurgy program for its iron ore deposits in the Pilbara with the focus on determining the lump yield (the mass percentage of >6.3 mm rocks) and the lump and fines grade for iron ore products. The geometallurgy program provides accurate information to design engineers and technical marketing teams on the performance of different iron ore mineralogies for future deposits. Additionally geometallurgy results are being used to guide short-term production planning with their introduction into short-term geology models and grade control models. The data that underpins this knowledge is from dedicated geometallurgical programs, drilled using PQ (~83 mm) holes. These holes are crushed by intervals that are based on geological definition which provides an indicative lump yield and lump and fines grade. The lump is then subjected to standard dropping and tumbling test stages to produce a simulated lump and fines product. In the past, quality assurance, quality control holes were drilled using HQ (~64 mm) holes for geochemistry purposes. These holes were crushed to provide an indicative lump yield and lump and fines grade and then 100 per cent is sent for assay (with no dropping and tumbling). Utilising data from HQ holes can significantly increase the indicative geometallurgical data available. This paper compares the geometallurgical results from both PQ and HQ holes from a range of bedded iron deposits (Brockman and Marra Mamba). Metallurgists frequently use a small number of large samples to characterise expected mill performance, with the a priori assumption that these few samples are representative of the entire deposit. Geometallurgical sampling is becoming more prevalent as a way to use many smaller samples to indicate the expected recovery as part of the Mineral Resource or Ore Reserve estimation.The evaluation of magnetite deposits involves specialised approaches to sample preparation, sample analysis and resource estimation. The sampling protocol for magnetite deposits will typically include the use of Davis Tube analysis. The Davis Tube is a mini-pilot plant that is used for determining the mass magnetic recovery from a small amount of sample ground to a specific size. The magnetic concentrate may then be analysed and together with the mass magnetic recovery, may be used to simulate the expected mill recovery. The magnetite sampling protocol is specific to each deposit, and is typically designed around a specific metallurgical flow sheet.During resource modelling, the mass magnetic recoveries and concentrate grades may be estimated directly or assigned to a block model using regressions with other chemical constituents. For estimation, the concentrate grades are weighted to account for the different mass magnetic recoveries of each sample and the impact of these differences on the concentrate estimates.

There is a growing interest in magnetite ores because of the increasing demand for this commodity. With these ores, there is significant cost associated with milling the ore to fine sizes using ball mills in closed circuit with hydrocyclones. Cyclone classification efficiency tends to be poor due to the large difference in density between magnetite and gangue. This decreases the grinding circuit efficiency and results in over-grinding of magnetite. The objective of the work described in this paper was to modify the Bond locked cycle milling test procedure to quantify the loss of grinding circuit efficiency due to the mineral density effect. The locked cycle test procedure described here includes a stage of magnetic separation treating the closing screen undersize, which allows simulation of magnetite classification. The effect of classifier efficiency on low-density particles (non-magnetics) was simulated by altering the proportion of closing screen undersize bypass returning to the mill. Using a magnetic separator and a screen in the magnetics stream, different proportions of the magnetic fraction can be bypassed, thus allowing simulation of the effect of particle density on classification efficiency. This laboratory test work has confirmed that the impact of mineral density on cyclone efficiency subsequently has a crucial negative effect on ball mill circuit capacity. The results are in good agreement with reductions in capacity observed in practice. Multicomponent grinding and classification models were also developed in the LIMN software environment and were able to successfully simulate both the industrial and the laboratory ball mill circuit. The uptake of nickel into the lattice of pyrrhotite,Fel_oS has been studied experimentally in the temperaturerange 200 DC to 760 DC. Nickel from both aqueous solutionsand salt melts diffuses rapidly into the sulphide latticewith ,an accompanying rel~ase of iron into the solution ormelt. The rate of uptake of nickel and its diffusion intothe sulphide lattice have been followed ,by opticalmicroscopy and by analysis with an electron probe microanalyser.Some geological consequences of this phenomenonaffecting the distribution of nickel in rocks associatedwith nickel-iron sulphide ores are discussed.

"Robustness can be defined as the ability of a system to resist change without adapting its initial stable configuration. Robust design methodology, which is widely accepted in the manufacturing industry, allows the establishment of robustness and reliability metrics in scenario analysis.In the mining industry, a mine can be considered as a system with design parameters such as processing plant and mining capacities. Traditionally, a limited number of scenario iterations are performed in an attempt to determine optimal capacity values. An important strategic decision such as process plant capacity in particular is made during the very early stages of a mining study, often based on a low level of information. Lack of time and tools to run and analyse a larger number of possible scenarios for different design parameter combinations are usually the main reasons for not performing a full analysis. In addition, the uncertainty of other mining study input parameters creates more risk in decision-making.With advances in technology, it is now possible to automate the process of generating several thousands of scenarios in an affordable and timely manner. This allows performing the results analysis and assessing robustness and reliability criteria within a reasonable time frame. It is possible to generate a surface of results based on the net present value (NPV) for each scenario. This surface will reflect the efficiency level of the capture of the economic rent for each production scale. In addition, each scenario can be tested under diverse conditions of volatility of other external variables such as prices, costs or recoveries for example.This paper aims to establish a methodology that applies robustness criteria to determine the best scenario on several surfaces of value, which is then assessed with real data from a mining project. Obtained results demonstrate the advantages of using the proposed methodology in dealing with the above-mentioned multidimensional problems. AND INTRODUCTION The Lochiel coal deposit, a large Tertiary soft brown coal deposit in the mid north of South Australia, is currently being investigated by the Electricity Trust of South Australia (ETSA) as a potential source of fuel for a base load power station. Feasibility studies indicated that the proposed dragline method of overburden removal was viable but economically sensitive to both highwail and dump batter angles. The unusual properties of the unconsolidated overburden sediments and the groundwater regime posed a number of intimately related hydrogeological and geotechnical questions which were addressed before and during the excavation of a trial pit. All strata at Lochiel are of soil strength, and artesian aquifers occur above and below the coal. From the initial evaluation of the deposit a number of hydrogeological questions were defined. These related to the rate at which the pore pressure in the silts is reduced by dewatering, the extent of the reduction in pore pressure due to prestripping, and the feasibility of dewatering and depressurising carbonaceous silty sand sequences. The site of the trial pit was selected to answer these and other questions from the basis of a detailed geological, hydrogeological and geotechnical understanding. The trial pit dewatering system simulated a full scale mine dewatering system and included ten pumped wells, twenty drainage wells, and nearly 400 monitoring instruments. It operated from September 1986 to June 1987. The excavation was carried out between February and May 1987.

Phyllite waste rock at the Simandou Pic de Fon and Oueleba Iron Ore deposits (Guinea, West Africa) variably weather to form clay-rich rocks. This weathering modifies the mineralogical, geochemical and mechanical properties of the phyllites. Final pit walls will largely be formed in phyllite, so it is critical that the slope design takes account of the distribution and variability of weathering within this material. Phyllite intact material strength has been correlated with geochemistry (ie mineralogy) facilitating the establishment of domains of intact rock strength (IRS). In order to calibrate this geochemically-based strength model, core from diamond drilling (DD), comprising a variety of phyllite material types (from soft clay to moderate strength rock), was geotechnically logged to assess intact strength; further validation was achieved by uniaxial compression (UCS) testing and point load tests (PLT). The correlation between geochemistry and strength offers a potentially powerful tool for differentiating basic mechanical properties of the rock mass, especially at Simandou where a significant proportion of the resource drilling is done by reverse circulation (RC). Unlike DD, reliable measurements of material strength from RC samples can prove difficult, especially in clay-rich material. Therefore, gaining information from routine geochemical assay results, independent of the sampleÆs physical integrity, is a valuable and cost-effective source of reliable empirical data. Data acquired using this approach provides an opportunity to develop strength domains, which are integrated into mine planning block models. In combination with other geotechnical characteristics, this can be a valuable input to the development of geotechnical models. Mine to Mill (MTM) optimisation, a total systems approach to the reduction of energy and cost in mining and mineral processing operations, is well-established technology. However, successful applications of MTM optimisation have been largely confined to gold, copper and lead/zinc semi autogenous grinding (SAG) operations, where the goals of tweaking the blast design to increase fines and hence throughput through the mill have been relatively easy to meet. The application of MTM optimisation in a more demanding environment, like that of a multi-stage crushing and screening aggregate operation, was conceived as part of a Department of Energy (DOE) initiative in 2004, aiming to reduce the energy consumption in the US aggregates industry. Two quarries operated by the Luck Stone Corporation of Richmond, Virginia, were selected for the demonstration sites. Dealing with ore variability and a requirement to maintain a fixed feed size distribution to the tertiary plant, whilst still aiming to increase yields of saleable products, presented some unique challenges. Despite these variables, the implementation of the MTM approach at Luck StoneÆs aggregate plant in Pittsboro, North Carolina, has led to a tangible improvement in productivity, particularly in the primary and secondary plants. The successful outcome was dependent upon several key factors, including reliable blasting and processing models, careful analysis of the rock conditions and plant configuration, understanding and buy-in from the Luck Stone operations staff, excellent collaboration with Virginia Tech staff and students, and long-term monitoring made possible through comprehensive PLC logging. This paper presents a review of the work conducted at the Pittsboro quarry and highlights the key reasons behind the successful implementation of the MTM approach in a complex plant environment.

Automatic sampling and weighing of copper sulphide concentrate produced on Bougainville Island (PNG) is described. Contained metal weights gave satisfactory agreement with buyer's results after the introduction of polyethylene lined sealed aluminium foil bags for transport and storage of assay samples. Paper bags used previously for this purpose permitted oxidation of the sulphide concentrate and thus caused lower assay values.
