The use of red sand as fine aggregate in concrete manufacture has been investigated as well as the use of fly ash as a cement replacement. The experimental work consisted of casting various concrete mixes including a control and comparing standard properties. Properties tested included compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength, modulus of elasticity, water permeability, chloride diffusion, pH dependence leaching and particle morphology. The results show that the concrete strength is not significantly affected when natural sand is replaced completely with red sand. The durability tests indicated high water permeability and high chloride diffusion due to the porosity of the red sand concrete, likely due to the low slump value. Leaching tests did not exceed New South Wales EPA guidelines.

A case-study is presented of the tailings dam of Nairne Pyrites Pty. Ltd., at Brukunga, South Australia. The methods of-construction and operation of the dam are outlined over the whole working life of the mine. Procedures of soil mechanics used to estimate the stability 'of the face of the dam are described, and seepage problems are dis- cussed. It is concluded that the dam is basically stable, and enabled Nairne Pyrites Pty. Ltd. to dispose of tailings economically, although more attention to seepage control may have been ad- vantageous. Suggestions are made on the construction and operation of tailings dams elsewhere.

The new South Mine in the Western Deep Levels complex is destined to become an ultra deep project extending to depths of 4 200 m below surface and where rock temperatures are likely to exceed 65 ¦C. Initial estimates put refrigeration requirements at 133 000 kWR. A surface refrigeration plant with an initial capacity of 42 000 kWR has been commissioned and will be used for mining the upper levels.

Photoelastic and equivalent material model ling techniques for studying stresses and defor- mations and modes of failure in geological and engineering structures are described. The appli- cation of these techniques to the solution of tunnelling design problems is outlined. Models may contain heterogeneous components to simulate geological and man-made structures and may be two- or three-dimensional. Prototype construc- tion procedures and time dependent behaviour may be modelled. Examples of recent model studies carried out for the design of underground railway tunnels are given. Development of photoelastic and equi- valent material modelling techniques and facili- ties at the CSIRO, Division of Applied Geomech- anics are described, including a biaxial and triaxial frame for testing large scale two and three dimensional equivalent material models and components of full scale prototype structures.

A key parameter affecting the performance of gravity thickeners in hydrometallurgical processing operations is the aggregation state of the feed after the addition of a flocculant. New procedures which measure the settling ratelsize relationship and the size distribution of aggregates in their process liquors have been used to quantify the aggregation state of the feedwell, overflow and underflow streams in a tailings thickener. The data obtained have been related to the thickener's operation and to a change in the flocculant dosage. A comparison is also made between the settling rate/size relationships determined with these new procedures and the mud-line settling rates from cylinder tests.

BECAUSE of the attention given in recent years to the flotation process, there is an extensive range of equipment available to any staff detailed for: the design of a flotation mill. This statement applies not only to the flotation machines, but also to equipment for crushing and grinding, elevating the pulp, dehydrating of concentrates, and the methods of driving the various equipment.Distributed through the Proceedings and Transactions of various metallurgical societies and journals there are many excellent descriptions of flotation mills, their equipment and performance.Whilst these articles describe-in many cases in detail-the equipment in the mills to which they refer, the reasons which govern the choice of each particular equipment are not usually given.

The paper presents the results of a series of pull out tests performed on roof reinforcement systems currently being adopted in mines in Australia 7mm wire, dividag bar, 15.2mm strand cable, and birdcage cable. The study also investigated the load deformation chara- cteristics and the various design parameters controlling the effectiveness of a cable-grout system. Suggestions for continued work are Highlighted.

To discuss this relationship both the problems of the mechanisms of ore accumulation and the origin and cause of volcanism must be faced. Volcanic activity is associated with hydrothermal activity but the causes of volcanism are inseparable from the problems of the origin of magmas generally. To be more in accord with the inevitable reaction between water and silicates at high temperature, it is suggested that reconsidera- tion be given to the role of water in magmas such that our general concept of magmas becomes one of hot hydrous pastes rather than melts with water in them. It is claimed that a general concept of magmas as gelatinous hydrosilicate masses is a far better assumption because the rheological and diffusive properties of such materials enables an adequate explanation of a greater number of observations. It is consistent with the mergence of magmatic and metamorphic rocks and requires low to modest temperatures at the time of liquifaction allowing convergence with mobilised and disturbed sediment masses. The physical and chemical properties of both wet sediment pastes and magmas envisaged as hydrolised silicate masses are entirely dependent on the enormous internal surfaces of their disordered solvated components. lbis new concept in geology is introduced by a reinteipretation of the Archaean stratigraphy of the greenstone belts of the Yilgarn Craton of Western Australia. Evidence is presented to show that the recorded Archaean succession of the Eastern Goldfields Province is composed of two distinct groups of mafic/ultrarnafic and felsic igneous rocks which, together with sediments, form alternating sequences represented by Cycles 1 to 4; Cycle 5 consists entirely of sediments. Recorded stratigraphy for the Murchison and corre1atives of the Southern Cross Subprovinces conform to this pattern. The five basic components are referred to as Unit 1 to Unit 5. A major erosional unconformity between Units 3 and 4 extending across the Craton is identified as a locus of potential major gold occurrence, including fossil placers, where suitable structural situations exist; Units 1 and 3 are identified as potential hosts of gold and nickel deposits; Units 2 and 4 for gold and base metals.

Jaspilites and underlying basalt contacts of the Archaean volcano- sedimentary Grpo Parß Group, Carajßs, host giant iron mineralisation in the ~100-km long, E-W trending Carajßs fold. Preliminary, unpublished geochronological data point to a Palaeoproterozoic mineralisation event. Geochemically, jaspilites are typical volcanogenic banded iron formations. Basalts exhibit evidence of spilitic seawater interaction. Iron-associated hydrothermal alteration of mafic rocks was induced by fluid infiltration in amygdales, with development of chlorite- and hematite-dominated zones. In the case of jaspilites, iron mineralisation encompasses: partial replacement of jaspilitic microcrystalline hematite by blasts of martitic magnetite; jasper recrystallisation, producing fine-grained, hematite-free granoblastic quartz; martite recrystallisation, forming lobate¦subhedral hematite; pervasive porosity development by quartz-chert leaching; incipient cavity filling by microlamellar hematite; and advanced filling by coarser, euhedral and comb-textured, tabular- shaped hematite.Peak hydrothermal ore textures indicate typical epithermal-crust conditions, supported by preliminary fluid-inclusion calculations at 160 - 200¦C. Such temperatures and extreme fluid-to-rock ratios during alteration must have exceeded the ambient metamorphic conditions, with the infiltrating fluid relatively hot and capable of leaching SiO2. Therefore, mineralisation developed over exhumed, Archaean, brittly deformed rocks, with mineral associations representative of very low- to low-grade metamorphism. Considering that chlorite (¦talc) abounds in mafic rocks; hydrothermal albite is developed; dolomite fills veins and vugs; the typical rare-earth-element (REE) pattern of jaspilites is significantly modified in higher-grade hard hematite ores (higher LREE); pyrite, copper sulfide minerals and rare gold occur in association with carbonate-quartz-rich alteration zones, it is suggested that an alkaline, H2O-Fe-CO2 mineralising fluid dominated, also containing species like S¦Cu¦Au. Peak-mineralising conditions are likely to have resulted from a single, evolving fluid, via incipient- through advanced-stage alteration phases. The porous, high-grade soft hematite-type ore (SH), rich in microlamellar and anhedral hematite, must have derived from interaction with this relatively hot SiO2-leaching fluid, whereas the high-grade massive hard hematite-type ore (MH) developed due to closer fluid-rock temperature equilibrium conditions, attained by mineral reactions, with relative increase in the Fe/Σcations ratios allowing the precipitation of subhedral-tabular hematite that partially cements the soft-hematite ore. SH and MH hematite ore types must thus reflect intermediate and high fluid:rock ratios, respectively. Since the N5 deposit is to date understood to contain the largest amount of the MH ore, its units are interpreted as the loci of the highest fluid:rock ratios in the district. Preliminary mineralogical information regarding the S11 deposit of the Serra Sul (south range) implies higher-temperature conditions. The near-equant grain size and the granoblastic intergrain relationship, coupled with the presence of riebeckite, augitic pyroxene and garnet, suggest hornfels textures. The data collected, though still relatively sparse, permit the speculation that the immense driving force for the Carajßs world-class iron deposits was a relatively shallow, igneous-related hydrothermal system. If such a model is correct, then the Carajßs Palaeoproterozoic iron deposits could represent an end-member of the iron oxide-copper-gold hydrothermal system in the province.

The low-grade clay-rich -1.0 mm fraction of fine iron ores have often proved difficult to upgrade and capital intensive to process when using traditional wet beneficiation technology including single or two stage hydrocyclone desliming, wet high intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS), spirals and final dewatering using fine screens. Very fine (<0.010 mm) clay-rich slimes simply follow the water split to the hydrocyclone underflow where it often impedes the subsequent processing performance of any downstream spirals and can result in troublesome direct dewatering of hydrocyclone underflow. The -1.0 mm fraction in goethitic iron ores is typically considered as waste. A new two-stage wet gravity separation flow sheet, referred to as the ædesandÆ process, has been designed to overcome these issues for the upgrading of low-grade clay-rich goethitic or hematite-quartz fine iron ores. The desand process is designed to treat the -1.0 mm range from -8.0 mm natural fines, to recover a -1.0 +0.038 mm higher-grade fraction by rejecting to tailings any low-grade clay-rich ultrafines and low density sand-size fine chert/quartz gangue and shale.The desand process consists of wet screens with a nominal 0.7-1.0 mm cut point which direct the undersize to hydrocyclones. The hydrocyclone underflow is then fed to upcurrent classifiers where the classifier middlings is sent to spirals and classifier and spirals concentrates are then dewatered using vacuum belt filters or fine screens. The three product upcurrent classifier is employed to further deslime the hydrocyclone underflow, producing firstly a coarse final concentrate, and then a deslimed middlings for feeding to spirals as well as a 0.100 mm clay and fine quartz or banded iron formation (BIF) sand in final overflow for feeding to the residue thickener. The upcurrent classifier middlings provides the spirals with a significantly cleaner feed material than traditional methods, with the end result that the spirals do not silt up with slimes and therefore can continue to run at their optimum. The upcurrent classifier and spirals form a complimentary pair, with the upcurrent classifier better able to send coarser, acceptable grade particles to concentrate and fine slimes to tailings whilst allowing the spiral to better reject coarser, subgrade low specific gravity particles. Test results for the Mayoko-Moussondji iron project, Republic of Congo, using upcurrent classifier-Wilfley Table (simulating spirals) gave acceptable mass recovery from run-of-mine (ROM) and Fe recovery from hydrocyclone underflow for HEMCOL (6.2 per cent mass recovery from ROM/43.1 per cent Fe recovery) and HEMBIF2 (5.1 per cent mass recovery from ROM/22.3 per cent Fe recovery) mineralisation types. The desand process also enables improved dewatering of -1.0 +0.038 mm product from a clay-rich plant feed.A number of new wet plants in the Pilbara use the desand flow sheet including FMGÆs Cloudbreak and their two Christmas Creek plants. Many potential new applications are being explored, with new iron ore plants in India as well as those being proposed for West Africa. Operational experience has highlighted the importance of providing clean process water to the upcurrent classifiers as well as ongoing design improvements including increased wear life, reduced maintenance and enabling a more steady feed rate to spirals.CITATION:Clout, J M F, 2013. JUDGING from the attitude of past and present Parliaments in Australia, it is a' reasonable assumption that encouragement of the principal industries has been adopted as a main principle in the government of the country, but while in most cases bonuses, subsidies, and other means have been proved successful and become recognized as established methods in the case of mining, which is undoubtedly one of the most important industries, the question is complicated by difference of conditions and variable quantities, and it can scarcely be said that any system has been proved generally successful. Indeed, it would not be a very extravagant statement to assert that problems connected with affording direct monetary assistance in aid of mining development, and at the same time devising a system adaptable to the varying conditions to be met, are, in every State of the Oommonwealth, matters continually exercising the minds of those concerned in providing and ailocating such assistance ie Parliament on the one hand, and the Department of Mines on the other.True, there are methods in vogue of granting State assistance to the mining industry which have undoubtedly been successful, but it is in most cases questionable whether the beneficial results following successful expenditure in one direction have compensated.

In the process of mining the lower seam in a multi-seam operation, a lot of oblique fract- ures appeared in the upper seam which was in the equilibrium zone. These fractures closed soon after the lower face line passed. Despite the occurrance of some degree of undulations, and and step-like unevenness, the upper seam was subsequently extracted without difficulty. When attempting multi-seam extraction, from the height of the equilibrium zone, the minimum distance between seams in ascending mining should be predicted. By analysing roof con- vergences data and the geometrical configuration of subsidence profile, it was found that the minimum safe distance for ascending multi-seam mining depends on the mining height of the lower seam and the properties and structure of the inter-stratified rocks.

Australia is the Western world's largest producer of alumina, supplying one third of total needs. Western Australia's South-West has the greatest concentration of alumina production in the world, with a current annual production rate in the region of 6.8 million tonnes per annum, over 20 per cent of the total supplied to market economies. The value of this production in 1989-90 was 2.34 billion dollars, a very significant contribution to the economy of the State (1). This is despite the fact that the bauxite from the Darling Range is the lowest grade that has ever been commercially exploited, and despite the geographical isolation of the region. It is therefore of great importance to the National and State economies that this industry retain its competitive edge, particularly in the current times of economic downturn. One essential ingredient of this competetiveness is technology and innovation, which can be assured by the committment of the industry to an active program of Research and Development, with support from the public sector as Appropriate.

The objective in design of an excavation in a jointed rock mass is to achieve a prescribed degree of control of rock mass displacement around the excavation. Any excavation in jointed rock usually involves slip and separation along discontinuities as well as translation and ro- tation of constituent rock blocks. Thus, any acceptable model of behavior around an excava- tion must be capable of simulating the force displacement paths followed by the constituent elements, including rigid body translation and rotation. The distinct element method models such behavior by simulating the rock mass as an assemblage of rock blocks which interact through corner and edge contacts. Discontinuities are regarded as boundary interactions between blocks with joint behavior prescribed for these inter- actions. Introduction of structural element logic allows a variety of installed support sys- tems to be modeled. The response of the support to axial, transverse, and flexural loads is based on explicit algorithms similar to those used in the distinct element formulation. This allows large displacements and rotations and general non-linear constitutive behavior for both the support elements and the interface with the rock. This paper describes both the distinct element and structural element formulations and demonstrates several applications involving sup- port interaction with jointed rock.

Many of the relevant engineering behaviours of tailings are controlled to a large degree by the density of the material. For example, loose tailings are prone to brittle strength loss, while dense tailings are dilative (i.e. gain strength) at large shear strains. The critical state framework has been successfully developed over the past few decades to assess whether in situ conditions are contractive or dilative, and estimate relevant engineering parameters on that basis. Tailings comprising primarily silt-sized particles, when subaqueously deposited, often form a particularly loose state compared to subaerially deposited material of similar index properties. Such subaqueous deposition occurs in the decant pond area, where the tailings typically pluviate in quiescent conditions within a pond of standing water. Silt tailings deposited in such a manner have been observed to be extremely loose in a number of TSF investigations. Of particular concern, the deposited material in such cases appear to be significantly looser than can be reproduced in the laboratory - even using moist tamping, the sample preparation method which can usually produce the loosest samples possible in laboratory conditions. While the loose density of subaqueously deposited silt tailings is clear, in a well-managed upstream-raised TSF the decant pond is usually small and far from the perimeter embankments, however there are a number of examples where the engineering performance of such materials becomes relevant – for example, when historical deposition practices were poor, resulting in subaqueous deposition near the perimeter embankment. This paper outlines the geotechnical characterisation of a number of such subaqueously-deposited zones, compares the in situ state to that achievable in the laboratory, and discusses options for assessing the expected engineering performance of such materials when comparable laboratory tests are unavailable.

Upon subduction, water is liberated from the sediments and the porous struc- ture of the oceanic crust and from de- hydration of minerals for redistribution and chemical reaction. A survey of pro- cesses which are likely to occur along the subducting plate reveals that water may well be basic in subduction induced gas generation, magma formation and ore deposition. In analogy to the industrial water gas process, reaction of water with car- bonaceous matter, in subducted sediments is likely to yield substantial volumes of hydrogen and carbon dioxide. While water and carbon dioxide appear to play a determining role in the development of differentiated magmas, hydrogen will react with metal sulfides and sulfur to form hydrogen sulfide which is essential in sulfide ore depo- sition. A survey of possible metal extrac- tion chemistry along subduction suggests a stepwise solubilization of metals from sediments and oceanic crust, and a poten tial accumulation of dissolved metals in zones of characteristic composition. The metal spectrum in ore deposits at near surface appears to reflect the com- position of the solution in the respec- tive subduction zone. A tendency for preferential solubi- lization of copper at subductidn level, from among the transition metals, an in- creasing generation of hydrogen sulfide in the sane direction and partition effects as well as sulfide precipitation characteristics lead to enrichment in copper and to its selective deposition in the direction towards the trench as observed in S. Latin America. A postscript deals with the formation of native copper.

Some better perspectives applying to the exploitation and dressing of polymetallic ores in the Banskfa. gtiavnica-Hod- rusea Ore District are supposed to be achieved after a suc- cessful investigation and proving there the existence of deep-seated mineralization as well as due to increasing de- mand for non-ferrous metals and consequently to higher mar- ket prices of those recently noticed. With respect to the present situation in mining and to the further technical development as well, a several times higher exploitation may be in this region expected, especially in the deeper .eated parts of the deposit. When solving the tasks of a complex economic exploitation over the whole region, consi- derable attention is paid to regional relations and impact studies (due to expected exploitation and ore dressing but also to very difficult problems of dewatering (drainage pro- blems-). It will be first of all necessary to find there an equilibrium between the consequences resulting from the re- naissance of mining industry and environmental requests un- dispensable for the city of Banska 9tiavnica and the other neighbouring towns in the vicinity of mining plants.
