Water retention, water loss and delay in tailings storage rehabilitation are major challenges for many Coal Mines. Work by Stewart, Backer and Busch in the early 1980s suggested that there were improvements to be made in tailings dewatering and density by the addition of flocculant. This prompted ACARP, in cooperation with Bulga Coal Management (Xstrata), to initiate a research project investigating the impact of flocculant addition on tailings deposition density, water retention and the tendency for tailings to form surface crusts suitable for subsequent rehabilitation. A polyacrylamide-based flocculant (200 - 250 g/tds) was injected into the tailings line immediately prior to disposal into the impoundment area. The flocculated slurry rapidly released clear water and created a beach due to the immediate increase in deposition density. The deposition density increased from 35 per cent w/w to 61 per cent w/w solids within 24 hours and continued to increase to 75 per cent, seven days after treatment. The water capture at the tailings storage facility improved by more than 90 per cent; water which would otherwise be lost from the circuit through retention and evaporation. The impoundment capacity had nearly tripled due to the improvement in initial deposition density from 420 kg/m3 up to 1163 kg/m3. Four weeks after disposal surface crusts were forming on the storage facility, suggesting that there would be less delay between cessation and tailings storage rehabilitation.

Atlas Copco is one of the worldÆs leading providers of industrial productivity solutions (Atlas Copco, 2009). Furthermore, the company spans 160 markets and held 34 000 employees at the end of 2008. The company is organised under three ætechniquesÆ whereby the Construction and Mining TechniqueÆs business division is located within +rebro, Sweden. This paper is aimed at briefly facilitating information on how the company and more specifically, the Construction and Mining Technique is run. Also, by sharing my experiences, this paper is intended to encourage and motivate students currently studying for a degree relevant to the minerals industry, to apply for this extremely beneficial scholarship. Through a number of presentations relating to the various divisions, products and aftermarket services of the company, I came to realise that Atlas Copco extends beyond simply selling equipment suitable for the mining and civil industries. This tour through Sweden also contained highlights of visiting the Underground Rock Excavation factory, Surface Drilling Equipment factory and Secoroc divisions. I was also fortunate enough to participate in a tour of the LKAB mine in Kiruna. In addition, time was allocated to less industry related activities, and I was able to go dog sledging, sip vodka cocktails out of ice glasses at the Ice Hotel and enjoy traditional Swedish foods of moose and reindeer. Most important and memorable to me; however, was the ability for employees of Atlas Copco to speak of the company and their products with such passion and enthusiasm, which truly made this a motivational and unforgettable experience.

Five types of mineral resource were known in the sedimentary cover of the oceans and seas floors prior to the 1980's :1) hydrocarbon fields including some very large zones of oil and gas accumulation; 2) "Red Sea" type thermal oozes with increased concentrations of noble metals; 3) ferromanganese nodules; 4) concentrations of metallic sulphides ("Black Smokers"); and 5) cobalt-bearing ferromanganese crusts on the summits and slopes of seamounts. Since then, the so called "White Smokers", containing sulphides of copper and zinc, have been discovered. The ore horizons (manganese, copper, nickel and other metals) of the sedimentary cover of deep-sea basins comprise a sixth type of mineral resource in the oceans. These horizons have not only a theoretical, but also a principal economic significance

The estimation of the grinding mill charge weight is vital to ensure its efficient performance. Mill underloading or overloading can cause losses through decreased production or unplanned down time. Metso Minerals Process Technology Asia Pacific and South America (MMPT) has developed two systems for measuring mill load. The first is an acoustic system (SmartEarÖ) and the second is an online model-based charge estimation system. The aim of both systems is to facilitate better operation of grinding mills. SmartEarÖ performs analysis on an audio signal from the mill and allows each different frequency component to be viewed, analysed and used in process control for load estimation. By isolating different frequencies, SmartEarÖ can give an estimate of mill load. The online dynamic mill model uses measurable mill parameters (such as power) to predict the current total load. Kalman filtering can also be utilised to further increase the accuracy of the model. Both of MetsoÆs systems have been installed at BHP BillitonÆs Cannington mine to measure the load within their autogenous (AG) mill. In this paper, the methods of mill load estimation are reviewed and compared to the bearing pressure reading, which is the current method used by Cannington to control mill load. The redundant estimates of mill load provide increased confidence and consequently more robust grinding operation under a wide range of conditions.

The application of methods using large diameter down holes has become an important facet in both the development and stoping operations of mines within the Aberfoyle group. Holes of up to 98 metres (vertical) and 78 metres (inclined) have been successfully used in stoping operations. A number of rises have been developed to meet ventilation, servicing and escape-way requirements. The most ambitious rise to date has been a..vertical 93 metre long by 4.50 metre square ventilation rise. Although some early problems were experienced, the ultimate successful completion of this rise has enabled the technique to be incorporated with confidence in future mining plans. This paper summarises experience in long hole rising techniques, their evolution from the original cratering concepts, and the approach to further development of these techniques.

Studies by Telecom showed that the existing cable tunnel system in the Melbourne C.B.D. required expansion in order to meet the future telecommunications needs of the City. Due to physical locations of the various telephone exchanges in the CBD, together with a necessity to connect into existing ATC tunnels, a network of low cover small sized tunnels was proposed to maintain and extend the existing telephone cable network. This paper reviews the feasibility studies, design criteria and constructional aspects involved in building 5 tunnels (total length of 1850 m) and 13 chambers (4 open cut and 9 underground)-together with ancillary works, which form part of the new cable tunnel network.

Some important mineral fields are referred to in discussing the formation of placer deposits in Australia. Testing methods include boring hand, with percussion rigs; with auger and pit digging drills; and l by vibro drilling. Sampling errors are minimized by the use of correct techniques and equipment for boring, sampling, and sample dressing, A hypothetical set of data is used to demonstrate the final process of evaluation, and some relevant taxation provisions are discussed.

The selective adsorption of gold cyanide by the weak base ion exchange resins, PAZ-4* and Duolite A-7*, the neutral polymeric adsorbent, Amberlite XAD7*, and the strong base resins, PAZ-8 and IRA-400+ have been studied in both low and high salinity waters, and performance compared with activated carbon. The selectivity of the neutral polymeric adsorbent and activated carbon for gold decreased in highly saline water, while the selectivity of weak and strong base resins for gold increased in highly saline water. This supports the contention that the adsorption mechanism for neutral polymeric adsorbents and activated carbon is the same. Copyright

The hydraulic-stowing mining method is most effective for mining thick coal seams. It is superior to the sliced cover- caving and artificial mining method and the fully mechanized sublevel-caving mining method for the following reasons - a much higher recovery rate is achieved, there is much less surface subsidence and roof pressure, there is no hidden danger of gob fire, and much less methane emission and coal dust problems, etc.. However, its superiority is overshadowed by its backward stowing technique which makes mechanisation of mining and stowing difficult, causes bleed water interference to production and to the environment and is uneconomic because of the high cost of stowing material. These disadvantages limited its application to coal seams that are difficult and not suitable to be mined by other mining methods. The remedy is in reforming it thoroughly to permit mining of otherwise unminable seams and this paper presents the reformation.

"Geometallurgy brings together geologists, mine planners and process engineers to extract meaningful mineralogical and textural information from an orebody, with a view to predicting its metallurgical response. Preferably, automated analytical techniques, which provide mineralogical and textural information, should process a large number of samples quickly, relatively inexpensively and reliably. Microfocus X-ray computed tomography (µXCT) is capable of producing 3D volumetric information on texture and mineralogy that satisfies some of these criteria. µXCT has been used extensively to study the porosity and internal pore structure of iron ore pellets as part of downstream processing. It has not been widely applied to earlier mineralogical and textural analysis of unprocessed ore, due to the limited ability of X-rays to penetrate high-density samples. In one of North AmericaÆs largest mines, which contains more than six active coal-producing faces, mine controllers must meet the complex challenge of adhering to the mine plan while also ensuring customer quality. Fleet management systems (FMS) provide many different avenues to control production flows, from the faces to the various pit crushers. Nonetheless, mine controllers must balance a variety of factors such as unplanned downs, differing customer demands, their own daily key performance indicators (KPIs) related to equipment utilisation, among others. Deviating from the short-term mine plan is the most common means of balancing the other factors, since adherence to the plan is traditionally only measured during the weekly variance meeting with engineering staff. However, such deviation may be one of the most costly responses, as long-term scheduling issues may arise such as multi-face dead-heading or insufficient stripping. This paper focuses on the development of a system for real-time adherence to mine plan within a control room environment. This system is part of a larger blending-focused, multi-million dollar project with elements of a centralised remote control room, developed at the University of ArizonaÆs Mining Information Systems and Operations Management (MISOM) Mine Control Center (MC2). The mine plan (MPL) component of the overall blending system integrates both historical and real-time FMS data with mine plan requirements directly sourced from original systems (no additional input required). The measures, displayed largely as graphs, have tools to help controllers manage the production to facilitate adherence to the plan. Some measures are designed to motivate crews to perform by inciting competition between crews, softened through a study of the controller culture. The MPL component was deployed at the mine, and the before and after deployment adherence was measured. This paper discusses the technical development of the new tool, its deployment, and an ethnography (study of culture) to understand controller motivation.

Systematic field evaluation of known gold and clay occurrences in South Korea has led to the recognition and discovery of both high and low sulphidation gold-silver epithermal systems. These are associated with Cretaceous acid-intermediate volcanic centres in the southern parts of the peninsula. The high sulphidation deposits such as Seongsan and Kohung are characterised by pervasive silica-alunite-dickite-pyrophyllite alteration with anomalous arsenic geochemical signatures. Gold mineralisation is associated with fine grained marcasite and pyrite. A low sulphidation quartz vein system observed at the Tongyoung mine comprises multistage colloform banded quartz-carbonate assemblages, with minor manganese and base metals. Gold and silver occur as electrum and tellurium minerals. Some deposits such as Gasado and Dogcheon display both high and low sulphidation alteration assemblages. Early pervasive silica-alunite-pyrophyllite alteration caps formed by acid fluids with a significant magmatic component, occur above cryptocrystalline colloform banded vein systems. The quartz vein stage hosts the precious metal mineralisation and appears to have been deposited by later neutral fluids generated in part through mixing with meteroric water.

Planning for flooding and assessment of flood impacts are important requirements for mining projects, as they are also for other types of development. With more intense development and concern from the community, supported by government regulatory requirements, assessment of flood concerns and impacts has become of increasing importance. To ensure that flooding issues are fully understood and results presented in an appropriate format, advanced hydraulic analysis procedures have been developed and are beginning to be applied. These procedures must be rigorous in an engineering context but the results must also be readily understood by the community and government agencies. Advanced two-dimensional hydraulic modelling is becoming accepted as an important means of assessing flooding issues for mining projects. With presentation of results from hydraulic models with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), flood impacts can be analysed rigorously and presented clearly. This paper discusses the application of advanced hydraulic modelling in the planning and impact assessment of a major mining project located on a floodplain where there is extensive inundation. The analysis provides for both input to the planning of the project and for detailed assessment of potential impacts. This case study illustrates some important aspects of the application of hydraulic modelling using a two-dimensional modelling to a critical flood design.

Drag pick roadheaders and continuous miners have been applied in the coal mining industry for several decades, having replaced drill-blast methods as the primary means of excavating coal and coal-measures strata. The generally harder rock types associated with metalliferous mining have precluded the use of such machines in the past, however, developments in machine technology and increasing labour costs and environmental constraints suggest that there are now likely to be applications suited to the method. Metalliferous mining engineers are generally unfamiliar with the machines themselves and with the fundamental criteria controlling rock cuttability. This paper gives an introduction to the machines and the controlling factors.

WINDING engines are one of the most important units in the equipment of a mine. Upon the winding machinery depends not only the output of the mine, but it supplies in most cases the only means by which workmen enter and return from the mine, and consequently the utmost care and attention is desirable in its design. The efficiency of a direct acting winding engine, as a machine is very low. In other words, the proportion between the useful work performed and the actual work the engine is capable of performing (under the most favourable conditions) is very small. The reasons for this are:-1. The intermittent nature of the work; the engine is stopped from 20 to 25 %(or even more) of the time which would constitute a useful day's work.2. The large amount of power that is absorbed applying the brakes to bring the load to rest.3. That the net useful load raised is small in comparison with dead load to be lifted, and the parts to be set in motion.4. In recent times many groups have indicated that they would like ore reserve estimation to be numeric and objective. To gain further understanding of the operating efficiency of the BHP Slab and Plate Products Division (SPPD) RH vacuum degasser, physical and mathematical model studies of the process have been undertaken. The purpose was to investigate how the various process parameters affect the liquid circulation rate, to visualise the flow patterns, and to identify and eliminate the cause of localised wear in the downleg. In the physical model mixing times were measured using an acid tracer technique. The results were applied to predicting trends in times required to obtain homogenous melt composition under varying conditions. A 2-dimensional mathematical model describing the liquid metal flow has been developed using the PHOENICS fluid-flow package. The physical model results were simulated and incorporated into the mathematical treatment and an improved design for vessel geometry is proposed. The effect of rounding the downleg entrance or installing a baffle between the legs is discussed.

A combination of flotation and smelting technologies is proposed as a cost-effective means to maximise the revenue of base metal operations. The proposed treatment route breaks the grade - recovery nexus associated with the treatment of ores exhibiting difficult mineralogy in conventional plants. Aspects of the two technologies are reviewed and typical capital and operating costs presented. A significant improvement in revenue is demonstrated in a worked example, where a copper-lead-zinc operation is examined in terms of the conventional and proposed treatment options. For the selected ore, the net smelter return per tonne of mill feed improved 57 per cent, from US$89.70 to US$141.10 with the proposed treatment option. This represents an additional US$51.4 million in annual revenue. Metallurgical operating costs increased by US$20.12 per tonne of mill feed for an incremental capital requirement of US$30.3 million for an existing operation.

In the Massif du Sud ophiolite complex platinum group elements occur predominantly as ultrafine-grained inclusions of rutheniridosmine, laurite and iridosmine. These form primary inclusions less than 5 to 10 um in diameter within chromite in podiform chromitite fringed by dunite, and emplaced subsequent to solidification of the host harzburgite. There is no specific association with trace inclusions of transition metal sulphides. The crystallization of then: Ir. Os and Ru minerals may have occurred concomitant with hromite, perhaps related to more reducing conditions produced by crystallization of the chromite. The Ir, Os. and Ru show pronounced fractionation from Pd, Pt and Rh expected to be also present in the mantle source rock. The dunite shows evidence of metasomatic origin from adjoining harzburgite, and the possibility of selective crystallization of the Ir sub-group elements suggests that Pd, Pt and Rh may have been transported elsewhere.

With the progress of modern mining engineering, one of the features of which is the mining from greater depths and the hoisting of greatly increased loads, it becomes a matter of increasing importance that the engineer should be able to determinewith some degree of precision the character of the strains on the hauling rope. But a wire rope is a complex structure; it is made up of spirally-twisted strands, which in turn are composed of spirally-twisted wires, and it is not particularly easy to say exactly what happens when this "doubly-twisted structure is wound round a drum or over a pulley.. The difficulty has been generally evaded in ordinary practice by the simple device of adopting a large factor of safety for the rope-usually from 8 to 10-a factor which experience has shown is sufficiently large to cover the bending strains set "up when the rope is passed over pulleys of the sizes commonly considered appropriate.When, however, we add the stress due to the bending of the rope to the stress produced by" the direct pull, we find that the actual factor of safety is usually more nearly 4 than 10, and frequently the bending stresses in the rope are so large compared with the simple tensile stresses that their neglect may easily lead to disastrous results when dealing with problems a little out of the common run.
