Professor Skeats, of the Melbourne University, gave much valued assistance in petrology, and Mr. Herbert Lavers kindly undertook the study of the garnets.INTRODUCTIONThe famous Broken Hill lode is situated in a low range of hills, the Barrier Ranges, near the western border of New South Wales. It has been worked since 1884-first for, silver, then for silver and lead, and at present for lead, silver, and zinc. No excuse seems necessary for placing before members even an imperfect report on the geological features of this notable ore deposit, since so little work has been done on the subject as to constitute almost a national reproach. This is the more deplorablesince the evidence laid open by mining operations is destroyed almost as soon as it is exposed, and there exists the real need of a continuous and connected record of geologieal developments.

In nature, ilmenite (FeTiO3) undergoes weathering through oxidation and removal of Fe to form an apparently continuous series of compositions from ilmenite to pseudorutile (ideally Fe2Ti3O9), and with further weathering, to leucoxene. To determine the mechanism of acid-leaching of ilmenite to ultimately form rutile, we have carried out an experimental study of ilmenite alteration in autoclaves at 150¦C in HCl solutions. Resulting products were studied by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, electron microprobe and Raman spectroscopy. In some experiments the solution was initially enriched in 18O and the distribution of the isotope in the alteration products mapped from the peak shift in the Raman spectra. The results indicate that the alteration may proceed in two stages, each with a sharp interface between the parent phase and the product. The alteration begins at the original ilmenite crystal surface and along cracks through which the fluid can migrate. The first alteration product is pseudorutile û no phases intermediate between ilmenite and pseudorutile were detected. The textural relationship between ilmenite and pseudorutile suggests a coupled dissolution-reprecipitation mechanism rather than a solid state continuous oxidation and Fe diffusion mechanism. The second stage involves a further dissolution-reprecipitation step to form rutile. Raman spectroscopy shows that the 18O is incorporated in the rutile during the recrystallisation. Throughout the alteration process the original morphology of the ilmenite is preserved although the product is highly porous. The rutile inherits crystallographic information from the parent ilmenite, resulting in a triply-twinned rutile microstructure.

On 20 December 1983 at 8.40am blast- hole 57 of Blast RN177 prematurely detonated follwed by a violent deflagration of blast- hole 59 at 10.40am. The blastholes were 380mm diameter drilled in black pyritic Mt McRae shale. The blastholes were loaded with ANFO and primed. Blasthole 57 was stemmed and blasthole 59 was not. A poss- ible mechanism which could lead to such a detonation is described. preliminary tests showed the top 5m of a bench had the highest temperature which could not be influenced by a range of treat -ments. Small scale laboratory tests show- ed that zinc oxide (ZnO) and magnesium carbonate (Mg2CO3) inhibited the reaction. A series of tests using AN with and without inhibitors loaded into the collars of blast -holes drilled in the top 6m of the bench and unstemmed is described. An analysis of the time to reaction of the holes loaded with AN against temperature shows that the decomposition of the AN in contact with the black pyritic shale is probably a sulphuric acid catalysed react- ion. All the inhibitors tested can neut- ralise the sulphuric acid in the shale. 10% ZnO appears to be an effective inhibitor of the reaction providing the AN/ZnO (90/10) is kept out of contact with surface material whose temperature can be as high as 60¦C in summer. It is concluded that ANFO/ZnO (90/ 10) should be now tested in stemmed holes.

This paper gives a brief description of VirtuoBlast technology ù a new, automated and highly interactive stereo vision technology which has been developed in CSIRO Exploration and Mining. VirtuoBlast technology is an integration of three advanced technologies - close-range digital terrestrial photogrammetry, oblique stereo imaging or high-speed stereo imaging, and temporal-spatial image matching technique. VirtuoBlast has been developed for the automated 3D measurement of blasting through rapid collection, processing, analysis and visualisation of 3D data related to blasting. A major field trial has been undertaken in August 1998 at the KCGM super pit. The field trial involved three applications of the technology, namely, pre-blast 3D surface mapping; post-blast 3D performance measurement; and temporal-spatial modelling of dynamic blasting process. This paper presents some results from this trial with emphasis on the application of VirtuoBlast technology to pre-blast 3D surface mapping and post-blast 3D performance measurement. Application to the temporal-spatial 3D modelling of dynamic blasting process will be presented in a separate paper. Pre- and post-blast surface models derived using both VirtuoBlast technology and conventional field survey method are presented. The differences in results using the two mapping methods clearly show that the digital photogrammetric technique has many advantages over conventional survey methods. Results of pre- and post-blast from the field trial have demonstrated the potential of VirtuoBlast technology to efficiently perform pre-blast 3D surface mapping and post-blast 3D performance measurement of production blasts. Demonstrated applications of VirtuoBlast technology to automated 3D measurement of blasting are showing an exciting future in advancing blasting science and modern blast design. The basic technologies are in place, however, continued improvements to the functionality, robustness and outputs are needed. The challenge is to build on the current state-of-the-art, by developing techniques and hardware which can be easily transferred to and implemented by the mining community. Current and future research and development will see improvements in imaging systems, automatic image processing and 3D data analysis.

Gold deposits in the Chirano district in south-west Ghana are hosted in a variety of structural settings along the Chirano shear zone (CSZ), in Paleoproterozoic rocks of the Sefwi-Bibiani belt. Most gold mineralisation occurs in strongly sheared and hydrothermally altered Birimian mafic igneous rocks and tonalite intrusions within the CSZ. A recent program of open pit structural mapping, core logging, and three-dimensional modelling helped to define deposit-scale structural controls on gold mineralisation. These include strain domains, shear zone flexures, shear zone intersections and vein arrays associated with host-rock competency contrasts. Interestingly, the plunge of higher-grade shoots in some deposits appears to be associated with the intersection of the CSZ and broadly folded Tarkwaian sedimentary rocks, which are not significant gold hosts in the Chirano district. This paper presents the results of 3D modelling that were used to define structural controls on mineralisation in several open pits and one underground mine along a 9 km length of the CSZ. LeapfrogÖ software was particularly useful because it highlighted the orientations of structural features that focused hydrothermal fluid flow during alteration and mineralisation. The improved understanding of structural controls provided two main benefits: near-mine exploration drill targets and better definition of structural domains for resource estimation.

The project is undertaken by Elgas Pty Ltd, a 50 per cent joint venture between AGL and BOC, to store 65 000 t of LPG in underground storage at Port Botany, NSW. The contractor, Concrete Constructions Pty Ltd, elected to use drilling and blasting techniques. Radar monitors are now widely used in surface mining for monitoring slope deformations and predicting failure events. Their introduction has facilitated better management of risk associated with slope failure during mining and therefore protection of personnel and equipment. However, a wellrecognised problem is that radar monitors only measure deformation directed towards the detector (line-of-sight bias). This bias can lead to misinterpretation of deformation size, rate and failure mechanism, and therefore miscalculation of failure volume, which can significantly impact safety and productivity. This paper presents recently completed research and field trials into the feasibility of using low cost vision systems to mitigate this issue. It has been demonstrated that by integrating a computer vision system with an existing slope monitor, high precision tracking of features in the field of view can be performed. Combined with assumptions on the deformation characteristics, the true 3D deformation vector can be estimated. The applicability of using this technique for monitoring iron ore mine slopes is discussed.

The professional skills shortage is intensifying, and commentators are predicting a shortfall in supply of qualified professionals for the mining industry, ranging from thousands to tens-of-thousands by 2020 (Tuckwell, 2011; Scoble, 2011; Laurence and Hebblewhite, 2011). Human resources are already stretched, and university graduates arriving in the workplace are often moved rapidly into management positions where there is limited scope to develop their engineering proficiency. This process may well be developing excellent young managers, but our industry is producing fewer excellent young engineers (Munro and Tilyard, 2009). Many believe that it is engineering excellence that is likely to be the key to our industryÆs success in the decade to come. An innovative in-house graduate development program has been created by specialists at the JK Centre in partnership with two mining companies. This program, known as MetSkill«, has been running throughout 2012. Groups of graduates have had to identify a process plant optimisation opportunity and embark on a structured program of data collection and analysis, facilitated by a æteaching teamÆ of researchers and consultants from the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) and JKTech. This group project culminates in a report-back session to senior company officials. Along the way, a series of short workshops and other activities provide opportunities to work on specialist skills, and support is also offered by senior technical specialists from the companies involved.This paper outlines key features of the MetSkill« program, along with a report-card on progress in 2012 and plans for further program development in 2013.CITATION:Drinkwater, D and Bianco, N, 2012. A mineral and chemical characterisation study was conducted on ilmenite-rich heavy mineral concentrates sourced from the western sector of the Eucla Basin in southern Australia. Test work involved using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and electron microprobe-based characterisation methods. Results showed considerable variability in the degree of ilmenite alteration between deposits with TiO2 contents varying from 53 - 63 wt per cent TiO2. Notwithstanding variability between individual deposits, the samples all had [Ti]/[Ti+Fe] ratios >0.5 consistent with a mineral assemblage of hydrated ilmenite or the hydrated, Ti-rich alteration phase pseudorutile (Fe3+2-x Ti3O9-3x (OH)3x). Accessory phases consisted of rutile (primary and secondary), zircon, aluminosilicates, quartz, Fe oxyhydroxides and spinels. Results for the most altered material are broadly comparable with data for ilmenite concentrates from the eastern margin of the basin. The mineralogy of the western Eucla Basin concentrates and the minor element composition of the ilmenite grains suggest they could be upgraded to synthetic rutile by a modified Becher process.

The impact and application of computer technology are dis- cussed. Broad guidelines and criteria are presented for establishment of a practical geomechanics data-base system to yield infor- mation suitable for mine design purposes. Future needs of the Australian mining in- dustry are examined.

Mining and petroleum continue to be the two most vita components of our nation's development, says Sir Julius Char in the Australian Journal of Mining (Nov-Dec 1996). In fact the} account for 71.6% of export earnings, and 21.2% of Gros; Domestic Product in Papua New Guinea. The Misima and Porger, Mines, along with the Kutubu oil project, have essentially rescues PNG's economic viability since the loss of income from Panguna Though the industry cannot create employment in the manner o. intensive industries such as agriculture, it does provid( opportunities to local communities in terms of jobs, financia compensation, and infrastructure. Many ventures take many years and enormous capital investment to set up. There are three phases: exploration, feasibility, an( operations. The operations phase sees a massive development o infrastructure, or the actual `building' of the mine. For mining companies to commit to such lengthy time frames and high level: of investment, without returns, requires confidence and a degree of commitment from government on a number of levels - legislative stability, monitoring social development, and the provision o social infrastructure.

A gold mine in southern China has transitioned from an open pit operation to a fully underground mine. An overhand mining method is used which requires the mined stopes to be filled with backfill having an unconfined compressive strength of at least 0.35MPa. Tailings from the process plant is deposited into separate flotation and Carbon in Leach (CIL) tailings storage facilities. The tailings has a high fines content and the thickener on site could only produce a dilute flotation tailings at a solids content of about 30 wt%. This resulted in two undesirable outcomes: the density of flotation tailings in the Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) was significantly lower than planned so that the TSF could not store the life of mine tailings and that the backfill product had to include a high percentage of manufactured aggregate and increased cement content to achieve the required strength. This paper presents results of a tailings study which identified that the flotation TSF would be capable of storing the remaining life of mine tailings if an amended backfill product made up of 100% of flotation tailings could be introduced. A 100% tailings backfill with the addition of 8% cement was developed by classifying the tailings and using the coarser fraction in the backfill. This backfill allowed 60% of the flotation tailings to be placed underground and only the remaining 40% in the flotation TSF. A new thickener was designed and installed to thicken the tailings and rheological testing of the tailings, using a closed loop pilot plant, provided parameters to upgrade the underground reticulation system to deliver cemented backfill to stopes throughout the mine and to deliver thickened tailings to the TSF. More than 1000 Ian of seismic reflection data correlated to ten exploration wells along with geological, gravity and magnetic data are used to construct the subsurface structure, in particular the crystalline basement, along a corridor approximately 100 Ian wide that traverses central Iraq in SE-NW direction for a distance of about 500 km from Baghdad in the central part of Iraq to Dohuk near the Turkish border. This transect is one of few such transects that represents the Iraqi contribution to the Global Geoscience Transects (GGT) project. The transect crosses two out of three major tectonic elements of Iraq: the unfolded zone and the folded zone.

Consideration of the questions: (i) is it feasible to study groups of processes in a generalised way? (ii) to what extent does purpose affect the form of a process model? (iii) are there any significant, novel investig- ations which can be made by computer simulation? (iv) what long-term developments are desirable in extractive metallurgy? has led to some new broad objectives for research in hydrometallurgical process engineering. Propositions for grouping processes, developing models for different specific purposes, using a systems engineering approach and developing high technology processes are discussed, and the role of computer simulation indicated by reference to particular projects.

In mining operations, the removal of overburden to expose the ores is achieved by rock blasting using ammonium nitrate based explosives, eg ammonium nitrate-fuel oil mixtures, commonly known as ANFO. However, ammonium nitrate can react with pyritic shales that are often found in many mines, leading to premature detonation or spontaneous explosion. In order to minimise the occurrence of spontaneous explosion, the reactivity of the shale in a mine must be assessed. This will provide a better understanding of blasting risks and thus will improve the safety and the cost efficiency of blasting through the selection of appropriate explosives. In this study, shale samples were collected from different locations in Western AustraliaÆs Mt Whaleback iron ore mine and geochemically characterised. The reactivity of the shale samples towards ammonium nitrate and ANFO was investigated using a combination of large-scale firing range tests and laboratory isothermal reactor tests. Results of the firing range tests show that the reactive ingredients of the shale are the limiting factor for the reactions between shale and ANFO. Based on the firing range test results, further isothermal reactor tests were conducted to investigate the reactivity of shale samples towards ammonium nitrate under controlled conditions. Analysis of the results from the firing range tests and the isothermal reactor tests shows that there are correlations between the reactivity of shale samples and several geochemical characteristics such as sulfate, sulfur, ferrous and zinc content.

This paper discusses the concepts of core risk associated with mining projects and operations and illustrates the types of core geotechnical risks and consequences that may relate to a range of different mining methods, with recommendations on risk management procedures to ensure that the core risks are under constant and ongoing scrutiny and priority management focus. These core geotechnical risks can and should be identified at the initial mining method selection stage, during a feasibility study. They should form part of the auditing of the project and the decision-making regarding the project viability. They should then be built into the ongoing management structure of the project, right through into ongoing operations, with regular audit and review.

The capital cost of major items of mining equipment is very high. The operating cost of such equipment is also high. It is therefore important that such expensive equipment is used productively. To this end mine management uses production data systems and management accounting systems to monitor events and provide data for analysis to enable management to make operating and business optimisation decisions. This could be done better if there was an understanding of productivity in terms of its utilisation and efficiency components. What has been missing has been a methodology to properly account for the productivity of equipment in terms of its contribution in dollars to the costs and profit of the mine. An explanation of the Productivity Accounting methodology will be given. It will then be shown that productivity has two components, that of capacity utilisation and efficiency. These are defined and the dollar contribution of each to costs and profit shown. The efficiency component tracks the effect of proportional changes in input cost quantities used in the mining process as mining production changes. The capacity utilisation component tracks the effect of step changes in the input cost quantities used in the mining process as mining production changes.

The Mt Lyell Mine at Queenstown, Tasmania was re-opened in 1995 by Copper Mines of Tasmania Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Mt Lyell Mining Co Ltd. The re-opening followed over 100 years of copper and gold mining at Mt Lyell. Major changes in practice were implemented across the site. Preventing further damage to an already disturbed environment was a major priority. Sublevel caving, at a lower cut-off grade, replaced open stoping for the deep underground mining. Development and later stoping are handled by a contractor, National Mine Management Pty Ltd, in the largest underground contract awarded at the time. Large scale sublevel caving was new to Mt Lyell and not widely practised in Australia, requiring studies and systematic development of the method, particularly in drilling and blasting. Rehabilitation and upgrading of mine infrastructure have been and will continue to be a challenge. The mine has, since 1995, returned to being a stable producer with potential for growth.
