The use of dolomite as a refractory began in England about 1870 when the basic Bessemer process for the removal of phosphorus from steel was developed by Thomas and Gilchrist.Knowledge of dolomite as a refractory in this country goes back to the early part of this century, at the time when the Hoskins Brothers took over the Lithgow Iron and Steel Works from W. Sandford. The practice then was toimport burned dolomite in casks from England. It is reported that much of the material was powdered when received, but was still serviceable. The earliest. used sources of local stone were in the Bathurst and Mudgee areas of New South Wales, and these dolomites were first used raw. Later, dolomite was burned in cupolas at Havilah near Mudgee, coke being obtained from the South Coast of New South Wales. This plant supplied burned dolomite to the Lithgow steel plant, later to the Australil1n Iron and Steel plant at Port Kembla, and also to the electric steel furnaces at Newcastle, Sydney and Melbourne until the plant was closed down in 1946.The Broken Hill Proprietary Company first obtained its dolomite from George's Plains near Bathurst (this was, really a magnesium limestone) and later from Mount Knowles, a deposit near Mudgee, which was eventually taken over by the CO:plpany in 1918. Ventilation, air leakage, and various cutting, loading and support movement operations all have a role in dust distribution on longwall faces as shown by the results of a large number of dust measurements on different longwall operations in the Bulli seam on the South Coast. It is concluded that leakage of air on the face has demonstrable mfluence on the exposure of the shearer operator to dust level. It is possible to calculate dust generated by various elements of a rrurung operation on the face from a single point measurement. In the examination of dust deposition from the source of generation as a function of particle size, it is found that respirable dust can remain airborne over long distances without any significant drop in concentration, if unobstructed.

The Escondida Porphyry Copper Deposit, located in Chile's II Region 160 Km to the southeast of the city of Antofagasta, is currently owned by Minera Escondida Limitada, a company comprising The Broken Hill Proprietary (57.5%), Rio Tinto Zinc (30%) a group of Japanese companies represented by Mitsubishi Corporation (10%), and the International Financing Corporation of the World Bank (2.5%) (Fig.l)By 1983, most of the reconnaissance drilling was completed and prefeasibility studies were regularly updated as new drilling results were reported and project concepts re-evaluated (Fig.2). In October 1982 the project was transferred from Exploration Management to Operations. By the end of 1984 project pre-development activities, including inpit development drilling, geological exploration, water resource definition, an underground bulk sampling program and the initial project feasibility report, were completed.

The calculation of the liberation spectrum in the product from continuous milling operations is a problem of considerable importance, and it is difficult to solve because the population balance equation must be integrated in two-dimensional space. Complete solutions require a very detailed knowledge of the complex interactions between the fracture patterns and the mineralogical ore texture when brittle particles are subject to impact fracture. Most of the liberation models that have been developed to date apply only to batch comminution processes and under these conditions the liberation problem can be studied in isolation. When the comminution is continuous and forms a unit operation in a flowsheet that includes classification and separation operations, the situation is very different, and then the liberation of the minerals must be described when single particles of known mineralogical composition are fractured. Important industrial examples are conventional milling circuits closed by hydrocyclone and regrind mills in flotation plants. This paper presents an efficient computational algorithm for the calculation of the liberation spectrum produced by continuous milling operations. The algorithm relies heavily on the detailed internal structure of the Andrews-Mika diagram. The modifications that are required to make this diagram apply to practical ore minerals, and the internal structure of this diagram can be established using single-particle fracture on mono-size, mono-grade material but suitable liberation models are essential to interpret the data in terms of the cross transfer coefficients required for the population balance procedure. Models proposed by Leroux (1992) and King (1990) are compared to experimental data.

Since the advent of plate tectonic modelling, the Ramu-Markham valley has been thought the site of a classical island-arc/conti- nent collision zone. In this interpretation the units south of the Markham Valley are held to be island are / micrcontinental mate- rial accreted to Australia and those north of the valley are thought to represent a separate Finisterre island-arc terrane. Recent remapping by the Geological Survey of Papua New Guinea shows: (1) there is no terrane boundary along the Ramu-Markham valley (2) the Finisterre Volcanics are probably part of either a fore-arc sequence or oceanic plateau obducted onto a microcontinent/ volcanic-arc composite terrane, accreted to the continental Australian plate. A new tectonic model is proposed for northern PNG and involves: (I) Eocene to Late Oligocene subduction below a microcontinent remote from Australia to produce the Sepik are and related intrusives, the Finisterre Volcanics (fore-arc or possible oce- anic plateau), together with the Alife blueschist. (2) obduction of the Sepik arc in Late Oligocene-Early Miocene times over the advancing Australian plate. This resulted in crustal melting, some of the products of which are the Mid- dle to Late Miocene Akuna and Bismarck intrusive complexes of the Maramuni arc. (3) obduction of the Finisterre Volcanics began in Early Pliocene times and continues today. (4) post-Middle Miocene mineralisation is the result of melting after obduction of the Sepik microcontinent.

The ore reserves of the Frieda porphyry copper prospect in Papua New Guinea have been estimated using kriging and an alternative method. Only very erratic variograms could be obtained from the raw data and thus it can be expected that kriging variances will be unrel- iable. The frequency distributions of the two sets of estimates show expected differences and the resulting mineable reserves show similar expected differences. More drilling and the use of disjunctive kriging are needed to produce reliable estim- Ates.

The mine planning and operational aspects of applying Continuous Surface Miner (CSM) technology to Australian coal strip and open cut mines is investigated for both existing and planned deposits. CSM produc- tivity as a function of geomechanical properties, formation thickness, mechanical availability and in-pit physical constraints, are considered. Productivity and operational costs are derived from current production machines and from first principles.

The geology of an area in north-western New South Wales, bounded by the South Australian and Queensland borders, latitude 32° S. and longitude 14° E. is discussed.The area involved includes sixteen 1:250,000 standard military sheets and covers approximately 96,000 sq. miles.The geology of the Willyama Complex is not dealt with but a small area of metasediments previously included in this unit is separated and a possible correlation with Precambrian to the east is suggested. Torrowangee Group sediments are described and the problem of nomenclature using a glacial implication is raised.Nine areas of proven Lower Palaeozoic sediments are considered and their relationship to the boundaries of the Bancannia Trough outlined. It is possible that some exposures not yet substantiated by fossil evidence may prove to be Lower Palaeozoic rather than Precambrian in age.The sediments of the Lachlan Geosyncline in the area of the Cobar massif are described and new concepts on the age and distribution of some of the established stratigraphic units are introduced. The absence of rocks of Middle Silurian age probably indicates the time of a major orogeny in this area.Lithology, thickness, and distribution of the Upper Devonian sediments is considered and some of the more recently found fish plate localities are listed.Mesozoic sediments occur in isolated areas of Lower Jurassic age and in the Great Australian (Artesian) Basin. A four-fold subdivision of sediments of the basin has been possible in some areas but lack of sub-surface information at present, precludes the possibility of correlation with the type sections in Queensland.Units in the Cainozoic are subdivided and a five fold subdivision of the Quaternary, at present being used throughout western New South Wales, is described.

We have considered the following characteristics of the crust and upper mantle of the Pacific Belt: seismic wave velocit> anomalies, mechanical stress and shear deformation rate fields, heat flow and the pattern of metallogenic provinces of the Belt. It has been noted that there exist certain regularities in distribution of the above mentioned geophysical characteristics and metallogenic zones within the Belt, displayed by prevalence of the lithophile elements in the Asia-Australian part of the Belt, and of the chalcophile ones within the American part.

A substantial cost is invested into the data collection phase of any exploration or development program; notwithstanding, it is impractical to expect a database of information can be collated to ensure a perfect geological interpretation. The question then becomes, is there a possible alternative interpretation and what is the likely impact of the variations? Modelling in 2005, of the Cosmo lode at Sunrise Dam Gold Mine, Western Australia led to consideration of the philosophical implications associated with resource management. It was concluded that several plausible geological models could be constructed from the known geological database. To varying degrees, this predicament is common to all geological reconstructions, as several alternative geological models can be generated at almost any stage that will impact on the resultant resource estimation and mine plan. The significance of that variation and the associated risk of multiple geological models (MGMs) requires due consideration. What is being suggested is that using plausible multiple geological models advances the holistic understanding of a mineral deposit within the bounds of the data collected, providing fluidity for updating geological knowledge and building inherent variability into the design and planning departments where variations of the geological models may materially impact on the resource performance.

The need to solve the problems associated with spontaneous combustion, system of ventil- ation and methane drainage in gassy coal mines has brought about the development of mining and degassing methods which has made possible up to 80% gas recovery in retreating longwalls. Beneficial results also were obtained mostly in the double or multiple-entry systems, but for single-entry systems and for a seam thickness exceeding 3 m, gas recovery rate is still very low. With some single-heading systems, such as those where a return roadway is not maintained in the goaf behind the face line, a new methane drainage technology is practiced. Attempts were made to extract methane from roof holes drilled from offsets in the ribside of the longwall block. The inclinations and lengths of the boreholes were planned and designed on the basis of the geological and mining condit- ions encountered at the time and every second hole was terminated precisely at the point where the previous hole intersected the immed- iate roof goaf area above the face. There are mathematical relations approp- riate to the design of the above drainage systems to give optimum methane recovery under the given conditions. Some examples of drainage have reached 87% recovery and have attained 94% CH4 purity.

Constructed between 1885 and 1891, the New Croton Aqueduct (NCA) in New York State is a 50 km long (31 mi) brick-lined tunnel conveying water from the Croton watershed north of New York City to distribution systems in the Bronx and Manhattan. Except at two siphons, the aqueduct operates as an open channel conduit from the New Croton Reservoir downstream 39 km (25 mi) to the Jerome Park Reservoir in the Bronx. The remaining 11 km (6 mi) is operated as a pressurised conduit and includes a major siphon, of circular cross-section, under the Harlem River. The aqueduct has a flow capacity of approximately 1100 million litres of water per day (13 m3/s or 290 million gallons per day) and supplies on average ten per cent of New York CityÆs drinking water. The CityÆs water supply system is operated and maintained by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP). This paper covers the work done during the three main stages of the program to rehabilitate the entire NCA: inspections, design and rehabilitation. It also includes some of the more interesting structural findings of the original construction as well as documents and drawings from the NYCDEP archives. The rehabilitation program has been underway in phases since 1993, with inspections scheduled to minimise outages, allowing this strategic aqueduct to remain in service during critical seasonal periods. The open channel flow section of the aqueduct in the north is horseshoe shaped, with inside dimensions of 4.1 m (13.6 ft) in width and 4 m (13.5 ft) in height. The pressurised section is 3.7 m (12.3 ft) in diameter, and includes a 90 m (330 ft) deep siphon under the Harlem River. A total of 163 million bricks were used in the construction, enough to build a 48 km (30 mi) wall around Manhattan Island, 3 m (10 ft) thick and 15 m (50 ft) high.Between 1993 and 1997 a series of in-tunnel investigations were performed in the open channel portion of the NCA, consisting of field inspection, non-destructive geophysical testing, and coring of the brick liner. Between November 2004 and September 2005, a major inspection program was conducted to assess the condition of the 11 km (6 mi) long pressurised section and all shafts, headhouses and blow-off structures along the entire 50 km (31 mi) alignment. Inspection methods included using an underwater remote operated vehicle (ROV) equipped with sonar and cameras to inspect the deep siphon, fibre optics examinations of probe holes drilled through and beyond the brick lining, and core holes and geophysical inspections to assess properties of the liner and behind-the-liner materials. A water pressure and test grouting program was conducted to assess methods and expected grout takes for the rehabilitation work in the pressurised sections. The rehabilitation program is anticipated to be completed in 2010.

A series of laboratory flotation tests were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of various depressants as arsenic (and zinc) depressants in the lead cleaner stage of the NBHC mill at Broken Hill. The depressants used included potassium cyanide, ferrous sulphate, sodium hypochlorite, potassium ferricyanide and two Cyanamid commerical depressants, Aerodepressants 610 and 633. A standard roughing stage was completed before the addition of the reagents in the cleaning stage. All reagents tested produced significant arsenic depression, with the best results being obtained with the addition of potassium cyanide and sodium hypochlorite. Some of the depressants activated the zinc in the process of arsenic depression. The best result was obtained with the addition of 90 g/t potassium cyanide at a pH of 10 when arsenic recovery was only 1/4 that of the value obtained for the standard test.

Geological modelling is a crucial preparatory stage to most facets of the mine planning of an orebody. The process of modelling involves skilled geological interpretation. Recent innovations in computer software and graphics hardware provide many tools which can be used to dramatically improve on manual methods of interpreting orebody data. Geological interpretation can be carried out quickly to produce accurate block models for many orebody attributes, such as grades, and these models can be easily updated locally as exploration and mine development data become available. The speed of the modelling process coupled with the mass storage capabilities of the computer now allows geologists to optimise the geological model or carry more than one model through to the mine planning phase.

The performance of a hydrocyclone treating fine coal has been examined over a wide range of feed and operating conditions.The results were expressed in terms of partition curves from which the water split to the oversize flowstream,the corrected separation size and reduced partition curves were determined-.The following conclusions were obtained. (a) The water split to the oversize flowstream was found to be dependent upon the vortex finder and spigot diameters of the cyclone and the flowrate and solids content of the feed slurry. (b) The corrected separation size was dependent on the solids content of the feed,and the vortex finder and spigot diameters.The hydraulic pressure (or flowrate) of the feed slurry did not have a significant effect.This phenomenon could be explained in terms of crowding of the particles at the Spigot.

The Cleveland Mine has an annual ore production of 400,000 tonnes at a grade of 0.79 per cent tin and 0.30 per cent copper. It is achieved by an open stoping method, mechanised overhead sub-level benching. The operation is trackless with a ramp access from all working places to the surf- ace. Broken material is loaded from the stope and development headings into diesel trucks and hauled to the surface crushing plant.

Gold mineralisation at the Penjom gold deposit in the Central Belt of Peninsular Malaysia is hosted in structurally-controlled quartz-carbonate veins that display a variable degree of overprinting events under a ductile-brittle regime. Mineralised veins are categorised into two main types: shear and extension veins. Shear veins are interpreted as forming during the fold and thrust episode (D2 event) along the bedding and the Penjom Thrust ore zone. The shear veins are associated with discordant extension veins. In addition, NE- to NNE-trending splays and Penjom-Thrust-parallel reverse-dextral and locally NNW to N–S reverse-sinistral faults overprint earlier vein events, forming a new episode of extensional veins during the D3 event. This is mostly at the fault contacts of intrusives, either as shallow-dipping or vertical-sheeted stockwork or brecciated veins. At least two episodes of faulting comprising D4-D5 are evident, which postdates the main episodes of veining and mineralisation. This is indicated by a series of late episode N–S-trending sinistral and oblique to normal faults that transect and displace the Penjom Thrust and the folded footwall sequence at low angles, and are interpreted to be responsible for intensive vein deformation along the Penjom Thrust and displacement of the orebody. Structural interpretations of mineralised veins suggest that the veins were formed under a compressional to transpressional regime, with later post-vein displacement in a transtensional to extensional regime. Vein formation in response to deformation observed at Penjom reflects regional structural deformation within the Central Belt of Peninsular Malaysia and specifically along the Bentong-Raub Suture zone.CITATION:Endut, Z, Ng, T F, Abdul Aziz, J H and Teh, G H, 2015. ABSTRACT- I Chemotrophic bacteria, capable of oxidising inorganic species such as Fe(II) and S(-]I) for their metabolic energy, have been known for many decades and interest in these bacterial species has increased since their ability oxidise auriferous arsenopyrite ores has been demonstrated. The rate at which bacterial cultures can oxidise a solid sulphide ore is of importance but a number of difficulties arise when attempting to evaluate this oxidative activity. The two major problems are counting the number of viable bacteria present in the reactor and identifying the types of bacteria that are active in both the solid and liquid phases. Enumerating the numbers of bacteria responsible for an observed change is necessary to compare the activity of different isolates. For selection and identification of bacteria during the development stages of a project, and for monitoring an operational process, the recognition of different species will be of importance. Methods for the taxonomic discrimination of bacterial species rely on observations, different culturing techniques, and the degree of DNA base homology between isolates. A method reported recently uses IR spectroscopy for comparisons between isolates. This spectroscopic method and its application is discussed.
