Column flotation is receiving increased interest from both an industrial and research perspective in Australia. The traditional overseas application as a molybdenum cleaning cell is being expanded and a number of new applications as cleaners, scavengers and roughers are emerging in Australia. The success of column flotation has hinged on the new understanding developing from the work of Finch- and coworkers at McGill University, Canada, particularly in relation to scale-up parameters and model development. The aspiring column flotation user in Australia now a has wealth of experience to draw on when deciding on the correct procedure to follow during the process evaluation and plant installation stages of development. However, some aspects relating to column design, such as aeration mechanisms, require careful evaluation.

The underlying principles of dewatering theory have recently achieved considerable practical application in the washing and dewatering of alumina trihydrate in Bayer plants. In particular, the influence on residual cake moisture contents of trace amounts of surfactant added to the wash water reveals that significant energy savings can be achieved. The influence of organic compounds produced by the caustic extraction of bauxite in the Bayer process is shown to be significant. These humic species reduce the cake permeability and the effectiveness of certain surfactants in dewatering operations.

The quality of the rock mass in which an excavation is being driven has a strong influence on the level of dynamic forces to which the excavation can be subjected and sustain damage. Though each specific rock mass occurrence is unique yet there are common rock mass features which influence the outcome of controlled blasting in a similar way. A field study was conducted which involved assessment of blast damage at several operating mines and the blasting of small-scale models. The effects of block size and strength, joint parameters, ground water, weathering of rocks and rock mass rating on the results of controlled blasting have been investigated and discussed in this study.

Ore deposit models form the basis for numerous other economic decisions in the mining process. The success of these economic decisions therefore depend directly on the accuracy of the ore evaluation process. The Geology Department at the Sishen Iron Ore Mine is responsible for the generation of a reliable geological computer model of the rock material with predicted grades. This information is then utilised for further ore reserve calculations, mine planning, production scheduling and grade control. Owing to a very complex geological orebody, grades and beneficiation characteristics differ significantly from sample to sample. This means that ore evaluation is a difficult process and great reliance is placed on computer techniques. Aspects of the formation, decomposition and acid solubility of zinc ferrite were examined to find potential ways of increasing the recovery of zinc from a calcination process of mineral concentrates. Ferrite can begin to form within 2 hours at 450¦C. while complete reaction can occur after 35 minutes at 700¦C. The nature of the starting materials has a pronounced effect on the rate of formation and below 700¦C. ZnSO4 and Fe2O3 proved to be the least reactive of the materials investigated. It is possible that iron in a mineral admixed h sphalerite can be converted to a relatively inactive form, however, it does not seem possible to prevent zince f formation when iron is in the sphalerite lattice. At the two temperatures examined, 650¦C. and 700¦C, the presence of SO2 in the atmosphere accelerate .e formation of ferrite. Prolonged exposure to such atmospheres, however, caused the ferrite to decompose to ZnSO4 and Fe203. The optimum temperature for decomposition was 650¦C. and it was virtually complete within 2 hours in an atmosphere of 10% SO2 in air. Zinc ferrite was also decomposed by CO at low concentrations, and by heating with limestone at 1000¦C. for at least 2 hours. The solubility of zinc ferrite in acid was influenced by the starting materials used. As both the reaction temperature and the time at temperature increased the acid solubility decreased. The 1989 feasibility study of the chessy, france, copper, zinc, pyrite and barite orebody was based upon a classical flowsheet. The flowsheet included, three stages of crushing, conventional rod and ball mill grinding in series, and sequential flotation of four products utilising conventional mechanical flotation cells. To improve the profitability of the project the partners commenced a search for ways to reduce the projected capital and operating costs of the proposed development. This paper presents the improvements in the projected capital and operating costs as a result of design and concept changes. The major changes included: ò the simplification of the crushing section with the adoption of semi autogenous grinding (SAG) milling of primary crushed ore. ò the deferral of pyrite and barite flotation circuits until market conditions were positive. ò the simplification of the flotation circuit by the use of column flotation cells for combined rougher/cleaner duty. ò the purchase of second hand equipment. The result of these changes was to reduce the capital cost estimate of the plant from US$ 21 million to US$ 11 million and operating cost estimates from US$ 18.90 to US$ 13.60 per tonne of ore for a decrease of approximately ten per cent in potential revenues.

This paper examines the effects of a significant number of plant alterations and modifications to the lead flotation circuit during the past five years. Metallurgical effort is directed largely at the flotation performance of middling streams and current strategies are discussed. The automatic control of cell destination and collector additions are outlined in the latter section of the paper, along with a description of control hardware in current use.

An automated method, which is believed to be the fastest in the world and which can be used by mineralogically-untrained technical assistants, has been developed for the rapid location of native gold particles and other gold minerals down to 1 pm in size in ores, concentrates, and tailings using a scanning electron microscope. Searching of a 25 mm diameter polished block in 1 pm steps usually requires 3-4 h. Examples of the location of native gold and gold tellurides in drill core sections, in crushed ore samples and gravity and flotation concentrates, and in various metallurgical test products are given. The results have application in ore exploration, in guiding metallurgical test programmes, and in assessing metallurgical per- formance in testwork and in operating plants.

Effective pre-splitting is a key feature of wall control blasting. Most mining operations use historical designs or rules-of-thumb for designing pre-split blasts. If productivity and safety benefits are to be gained, these methods need to be improved in order to accurately predict pre-split performance. This will become more pertinent as overburden depths increase, placing more demands on the pre-split operation. A classical qualitative quasi-static description of pre-splitting (Kutter and Fairhurst, 1968) is presented and it is shown to give some useful insights into the pre-splitting process. In particular, it is clear that the time interval between the initiation of adjacent pre-split holes is a very important factor. In terms of this analysis, it is shown that current techniques which employ detonating cord as the surface initiation system are not optimal. A static quantitative model for pre-split design which has been widely reported is then discussed and its simplifying assumptions and their implications are examined. It is shown that several of the assumptions may be reasonably justified in the light of real pre-split results. It is concluded that the model should yield conservative designs. For this model, the key calculation of the blasthole pressure that is needed to determine the required explosive charge is highlighted. Popular methods employed in the literature for describing the expansion of real detonation products are shown to be inappropriate and an alternative method using the non-ideal detonation code, CPeX, is proposed.

Its object is to describe the surface geology and the tin lodes, and to relate the lodes to the structure of the field.PREVIOUS REFERENCESR L. Jack made his first report on the field in 1880, but his principal report was made in 1883. W. E. Cameron described the Great Northern lodes in 1904. Numerous later reports on various mines were made by L. C. Ball, J. H. Reid and C. C. Morton, the most important of which were on the Black King, Good Friday, St. Patrick and the Great Northern Gully Shaft.GENERAL GEOLOGYJensen maps the Herberton area as part of a granite massif intruding rocks of two ages, the Younger Metamorphics of Silurian-Devonian age, and the Older Metamorphics of Older Palaeozoic age. The distinction is apparently based on lithological data. The Older Metamorphic rocks occur as inliers in the granite massif to the west and east of Herberton (Fig. 1).The area described consists of granite traversed by numerous dykes. West of the area, approaching the Older Metamorphic rocks, the granite becomes finer grained as if chilled towards its contact, and the dykes more numerous. To the east, passing from the Nova Scotia mine to Mount Lavery there are numerous dyke rocks, but the outcrops are poor and knowledge of the geology indefinite. Some mqre facts and inferences are presented in amplification of a recent paper on the geology of the Kalgoorlie Golden Mile stressing the volcanic origin of its rich gold ores, some of which are considered tobe exhalites. Previously unpublished and largely unmapped pyroclastic features in carbonated and chloritized, but not in amphibolitic, country rock are brought to attention. This applies particularly to the main host, viz. the relatively coarse-grained quartz dolerite greenstone (Q. D. G.), i.e. Golden Mile Dolerite, and gives more credibility to the spatial association of the rich Green Leader and telluride ores with bodies of sediments and tuffites occurring within, or adjacent to, Q. D. G. There may be an intrusive relationship with contiguous mafic amphibolites of doleritic origin, but this is not certain and can only be resolved by morecomprehensive mapping than in the past. Volcanic features have always been recognized in CalC Schist, i.e. Paringa Basalt, more so recently in the shape of coarse volcanic breccia.Iu the subsequent deformation of the gold ores since their inital emplacement there appears to be a structural parallel with some Canadian base-metal deposits, most of them of volcanogenic origin.

Blasting is known to be both an important and an easily quantified cost factor in rock breaking operations. However, the indirect costs and benefits of the blasting operation are not easily determined due to the irreversibility of the mechanisms involved and the multiplicity of influencing factors. A general conceptual model showing the relationship between blasting and mining costs is well known, but serious attempts to address the critical real relationships have all floundered on the fact that not enough is yet known about either detonation physics or blasting effects. This can only be remedied to the extent that blasting instrumentation enables researchers to pin down not only the relationship between the detonation process and its impact on a particular environment, but also the downhill costs of handling the rock, repairing any damage and building in "Safety Factors" to provide for imponderables. It is vital to standaraize on specifications for instrumentation and measurement techniques and there is a need to review what has been achieved in blasting expertise so as to focus on the most fruitful paths for future work.

Teller Underground Mine was established to extract ore from the Middle Vale Reef located on the eastern flank of Telfer Main Dome.The mine is located below a 150 m deep open pit operation. The ore body is shallow dipping highly structured, and is a main aquifer in quite difficult ground conditions.In respect of these conditions it was determined to access the orebody using an adaptation of coal mining and hard rock mining methods, with support being achieved using a combination of island pillars, rock bolts and timber stalls.The paper will describe these methods in more detail, then discuss the successes and failures of these methods when put into practice. As well, it will detail several factors whose influences were found to be greater than previously expected and stress the importance of good geotechnical advice.

Barra Bonita reservoir, located in the Sao Paulo State, Brazil, has been mainly used for local navigation and electricity generation to supply a prosper region in the country. Sand mining activities in that area have an important social and economic meaning for the local community. In this reservoir there are several sand mines that produce around 45 000 m3 of sand a month. These deposits were rich in material used as concrete aggregate in the civil construction. However, nowadays a significant increase in the demand of gravel can be observed, representing a serious productive problem. This material hasnÆt been well accepted by the market and, through the years, it was disposed at open sky in piles as waste deposits. This deposits have caused environmental problems like visual impact, reduction of free spaces outside and inside the mine, source of material to erosion and sedimentation processes in lower areas, flooding as a result of the filling up process in the drainage system, among others. For a lack of an appropriate technological characterisation, this material have been mainly used to pavement internal and external areas in the mine, with lower cost associated. With the purpose of evaluate the usefulness of this material in the conventional concrete, there were conducted several tests in the disposed residue including petrographical, physical, and chemical characterisation. The petrographical analysis and the preliminary results of the study showed that the material reacts with the alkalis that are present in the conventional cement (CP-II-E-32). In order to make the application technical and economically possible a research was developed seeking forms to correct this characteristic by adding special cements with high pozzolana content. The results of the technological, physical and chemical characterisation of the products indicated the technical viability of the use of that material. The study also allowed projecting environmental improvements resulting in the elimination of the waste piles.

For several decades miners have been obliged to maintain a vast supply of sharp steels at the working face to meet the hungry needs of rock-drills. In medium and large size mines this has meant the setting up of an organisation to store steels, to make and sharpen bits with all the complication and skill of forging, hot milling and heat treatment, and to transport sharp and dulled steels to and from the working face with all its labour, wastage, and inconvenience to other mining operations.In a mine with 250 rock-drills in use, a flow of more than 60,000 sharpened steels each month has to be maintained to keep the machines fully employed, so some idea of the magnitude of this problem may be grasped.For a long time it has been apparent that it is mainly the bit itself that wears, and many attempts have been made to reduce the enormity of the problem by providing detachable steel bits which could either be used once and rejected, or sharpened three or four times before rejection.At the same time metallurgists have striven to 'improve the quality of the steel and the heat treatment afforded it so that a bit, readily workable In a normal mine drill-shop, could be produced having a high resistance to wear and fatigue; but, although various alloy steels have been marketed, it is still usual to find many mines relying on a "straight" carbon (0.6 - 0.9% C.) steel for their drill steels.Since 1915 increasing use has been made of tungstencarbide as a cutting implement in the engineering industry. The Mt. Tom Price orebody of Hamersley Iron Pty. Limited consists of a folded hematite - shale sequence capped by a layer of goethite. Consequently, variations in iron content occur within the orebody, and as the overall grade is below that required to make specification products, selective mining must be carried out. A necessary preliminary to quality control'of products based on selective mining is the production of advance data, on the tonnages and grades of material to be expected in future mining areas. Bench plans showing zones of different grades and types of material anticipated are prepared from structural geological information. The grades of materials on a bench are essentially governed by the positions and attitudes of the shale bands. Quality control is exercised by blending different grades and types of material in primary crusher feed. Iron grade is the prime grade consideration although sometimes the level of phosphorus content must be considered. Pre-production grades Are determined from assay of samples taken from blasthole cuttings.

A major problem that has continued to plague the surface and underground coal industries is blast induced damage to the coal seam. Blasting Analysis International, in conjunction with a number of other organizations, has continued to address this concern through 14 years of field research in 68 full-scale production environments worldwide. Compiled results were obtained from varying field conditions. These included single and multiple seam coal mines, horizontal, rolling and steeply dipping coal seams and varied borehole diameters (ranging from 102 to 381 mm) and when using various explosive formulations. Results are discussed in detail along with the tools, test methods and analysis techniques to identify and quantify the problems. Over ten major causes of coal damage were identified. A number of practical and economic recommendations are presented that can benefit the entire coal and blasting industry especially in commercial operations whose economic growth relies heavily upon recovering an undamaged coal seam.

South Bulli is the oldest and largest underground coal mine in Australia. Two longwall units are in operation and current production is 2.5 to 3 million tonnes of run of mine product per year with a workforce of 600. Prior to 1984 a workforce of around 1,200 produced 1.5 million tonnes. Advances in technology can. of course, account for some of this gain, but the changes made in the human resources area are also seen as playing a major role in South Bulli emerging as a reasonably stable operation.The human resources strategy adopted recognises the value of the workforce and is aimed at not only fostering cooperation as all levels, but also making employees aware of the direct contribution they can make to the success of the enterprise.

Distillation of the large and growing greenhouse literature indicates that: ò Global warming has occurred over the past century or more; ò Build-up of CO2 (and lesser greenhouse gases) in the atmosphere is a fact; ò This build-up is likely to cause further global warming. It does not appear possible to conclude that the observed C02 build up and observed global warming are linked; nor is it yet possible to forecast global or regional climate variation with conviction. The dominant greenhouse gas is C02 with about half the warming potential of those gases emitted by man's activities; and about 80% of anthropogenic C02 emissions are from the burning of fossil fuels. Fossil-fuel C02 emissions arg divided about equally between the developed countries of OECD and the rest of the world. However C02 output growth over the past decade was about 4% for OECD and some 40% elsewhere. Population growth and pressure for better living standards will ensure continued higher growth outside OECD. Uncertainty about the impact of increasing C02 emissions on climate, and the long lead-times involved in limiting the increase in atmospheric C02 concentrations, are good reasons for taking action now. Australia accounts for about 275 million tonnes a year or just over 1% of the CO2 emitted from the world's consumption of fossil fuels, and the fight to control global emissions will be won or lost elsewhere. Australia's participation will be by wise conselt and by example. In view of the uncertainties involved, it appears premature to take actions that might place an additional financial burden on our hard-pressed country. However, much can be done now that makes good economic sense and has the added benefit of limiting the growth in Australia's CO2 emissions. Natural gas emits less C02 per unit of energy when burned than either coal or oil. Furthermore, new gas-fired power stations utilise energy at considerably higher efficiency than is the case today with coal or oil. Because of much lower capital costs, there is a compelling economic case for permitting natural gas to compete freely with coal in the Australian power generation market.
