In the former the speed may be eight times that of the latter.(2) Uniformity of Rock. - Any variation in the texture, hardness, etc, wiII have an effect on and direction of transmission of the waves.

The electrochemistry of leaching gold with thiosulphate has been studied systematically by using electrochemical techniques. Results show that the current peak of anodic dissolution of gold occurs at about 50 mV(SCE) and there is passivation in the polarisation curve in the thiosulphate solution in the absence of ammonia. Ammonia markedly improves the anodic dissolution rate of gold and reduces the passivation as well as making the current peak shift negatively. Results also show that there is no current peak for a cathodic process in the range of 0 -900 mV(SCE) in the thiosulphate solution in the presence of oxygen but absence of cupric ions and ammonia. In the solution containing 0. 1 mol/L cupric-ammonia ions, the peak occurs at about -400 mV (SCE) and the cathodic process is characteristic of a catalytic reaction. Oxygen presents a predominate effect on the cathodic process. Based on the electrochemical investigation, the following mechanism of leaching gold with ammoniacal thiosulphate has been proposed. Ammonia reacts primarily with gold ions on th anodic surface of gold and the formed A (NH3)2+ rea~s then with S2O 3 in solution to form the stabler Au(S203) 2 . Cu (NHS) 4 gains electrons on the cathodic surface and is reduced to CU(N) ? which is then oxidised by oxygen and regenerated into Cu(NH3) 4 after entering the solution.

The producers of mineral sands on the East Coast of Australia might be regarded as having a simple task of selling Rutile and Zircon. Such is not the case. Differing quality and grain size requirements plus the dramatic increase in the percentage of mineral sold in a processed form have meant a large increase in the number of different end products handled. The resulting sales control problems are compounded by the need to be able to deliver against a large number of separate contracts which may relate to spot or long term sales in small quantities or in bulk shipments. Methods of helping management control this situation have been devised and incorporated into a suite of computer programs. Experience with the approach has been very satisfactory. The effect of changes to shipping schedules, commitment to new or changed orders, or proposed changes to production can be evaluated as and when necessary with little bother. The possibility of removing the phos phorus and sulphur contained in steelmaking slag has been studied by observing directly through the microscope melts heated on Pt- filaments. After a CaO crystal was placed in the molten slag, distributions of P, S and other elements formed around the CaO crystal were determined with the aid of EPMA. The results indicated that a layer of 2CaO SiO2 is formed on solid CaO in CaO-Si02 melts. Then between CaO and the newly formed compound the molten slag tends to migrate through cracks. For higher Fe 2 03 contents, the layers of the compounds 2CaO.Si02 and 3CaO SiO2 formed around the CaO crystal are not continuous but look more like particles, which promotes the dissolution of CaO. Phosphorus in slag was found to be enriched in the 2CaOòSi02 layer. Phosphorus in the 2CaO SiO2 phase is not related to the primary slag composition, being about 5-7% P205.. Sulphur in slag,as well as the phos- phorus,was concentrated in the 2CaO.Si02 phase. Disintegration due to weathering observed for slags produced in these investigations appeared to be due principally to hydration of lime.

The various risk components to be addressed by explorers and project developers (and their investors) to minimise and/or manage the risk of Pacrim mineral investment are summarised to provide an overview of the issues involved and to set the scene. It then highlights the role of individual Mineral Industry Professionals (especially independent consultants) who are at the heart of any risk reduction or risk management strategy. The involvement of accredited qualified/experienced (competent) and reputable professionals is essential to produce realistic and reliable results that gain and maintain investor confidence. Today, high ethical standards as well as technical competence are sought by government legislation/licensing regimes and initiatives of professional bodies like AusIMM, MICA, Professions Australia, Council of Professions, etc. All attempt to regulate and guarantee reputable individual professional behaviour (particularly in the context of currently perceived high corruption levels in many Pacrim countries). Brief comment will discuss the usefulness of accreditation and ethics codes plus other specific codes (eg JORC/VALMIN and their international analogues in Canada, South Africa, etc) in reducing risks.

All this mining industryactivity is occurring against a backdrop of wider political, social and economic change, affectingmostofAustralia. The North West Queensland Branch of the Institute decided that the time was ripe for an open forum where issues involved with developing the region's assets be presented and discussed between members of the industry and also the general public.That then is the aim of this meeting: it is to be a place of learning and discussion about issues relevantto the developmentofthese deposits. The procedure for operation of deluge systems installed in road tunnels is still a subject of debate. The work undertaken in this paper assists in the understanding of the effects of deluge in road tunnels, and thus aims to help inform the development of operational policy. Analysis was undertaken using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations to help explore the deluge interaction with the tunnel ventilation (including smoke exhaust) and combustion products. It was found, for the scenarios considered, that: Deluge activation can decrease the required critical velocity for smoke backlayering, and this in turn can improve the effectiveness of a smoke exhaust system.The dominant parameter for deluge effectiveness is the vehicle configuration, with shielded scenarios (such as a fire in the passenger compartment) showing almost no water reaching the fire. The water delivery rate (5 mm/min versus 10 mm/min) has only a minor effect on the smoke duct damper inlet temperatures and downstream smoke temperatures for small fires (5 MW). For large fires (50 MW) the higher water delivery rate gives slightly improved performance (lower damper inlet temperatures and lower downstream smoke temperatures). A one-dimensional transient tunnel model incorporating different operational and deluge response policies (ie deluge activation times) was developed. It was used to examine the influence of different operational parameters on life safety risk and tunnel damage risk. It was found, for the scenarios considered, that: The life safety risk for different scenarios has a sensitivity to deluge activation policy with the case of delaying the deluge activation for a long time giving the worst outcomes. However, the most critical parameters for life safety risk are operator response time (for all response activities, not just deluge) and the type of fire (configuration, size and growth rate).There is a reduction in risk of tunnel damage when the deluge is activated earlier, although the fire configuration (ie whether or not the seat of the fire can be reached) has the greatest influence on the outcome. It is concluded that the deluge activation policy should be case-dependent. It will depend on the tunnel, the safety systems provided, and most particularly the vehicles involved. The current policy in Australian tunnels is for manual activation of the deluge by the tunnel operator as soon as practical after the fire is confirmed (see also PIARC, 2007). This is a good policy. However, future work may be helpful to improve the skills of operators to make the best judgement as to when deluge should be activated, balancing all risks. This work could include research to further the understanding of deluge and fire in road tunnels, training programs and consideration of historical fire events.

Safe work Australia (SWA) has a number of proposed amendments to existing Workplace Exposure Standard (WES) values that may dramatically change how mining workplaces using personal gas monitoring instruments will operate. In consultation with leading gas monitor manufacturers and distributors, an assessment of common Australian alarm settings values and analysis of potential frequency of increased alarm likelihoods has been conducted. This assessment explores the relationships between current monitoring practices, using instruments as health and not just safety tools and identify what will be needed to minimise worker ‘alarm fatigue’ and for common tasks to continue safely. This paper provides the necessary information to aid industry and hygienists to be ‘future ready’ given the likely impact that order of magnitude reductions in time weighted average (TWA) values for NO2, SO2, H2S and other common gases will have on current working practices. Reductions to gas alarm values will provide significant challenges to existing work methods and will require, practical application of the pending future values. Improvements and awareness of instrument capabilities by safety and hygiene professionals will better utilise gas monitors real-time data monitoring capacity and no longer be just ‘safe or not-safe’ instruments. The presentation seeks to promote the practical steps required in setting alarms based on risk consequence and likelihood, increase general awareness of the tools and data available in modern instruments and will enable industry professionals to better manage the challenges of any potential future changes.

Measured data are used to study the phase stability relations in the system MgO-FeO-CaO and an isothermal section at 1000 K through this system is drawn.

Noranda Inc is a Canadian mining and metallurgical company with its activities managed through businesses in copper and recycling, zinc, aluminum, magnesium and various metals through its interest in Falconbridge Ltd. Noranda operates three base metal mines, three copper smelters, one copper refinery, one zinc refinery, one lead smelter and refinery, three copper recycling and sampling facilities seven aluminum producing facilities and one magnesium production facility in the construction stage. The mining side of Noranda has a strong history of open stope, cut and fill and shrinkage mining. The 1999 Noranda Annual Report lists a 206 million tonne resource located at Porphyry Mountain in GaspT, QuTbec. Mont Porphyre is a large tonnage, low-grade porphyry style Cu-Mo deposit that was discovered in 1994. It is located at a depth between 1.0 and 1.7 km below surface and characterised by a very competent rock mass. The Mont Porphyre resource is located adjacent to the town of Murdochville, close to NorandaÆs Mines GaspT operations. Mines GaspT closed its open pit and underground operations in 1999 after approximately 45 years of mining, but still operates a copper smelter near Murdochville. The low-grade and great depth of the Mont Porphyre resource suggested that mine design could not be based on the conventional Noranda open stoping mining practice. This paper will review NorandaÆs approach to evaluating the Mont Porphyre deposit. The approach included two definition diamond drilling campaigns, a review of current caving practice, an in-house scope study, a geotechnical logging program for diamond drill core and participation in an international study on cave mining. One interesting component of NorandaÆs approach was the scope study that involved a team of multi-disciplinary personnel drawn together for a short period of time. The objective of the scope study was to determine what conditions would be necessary to mine the deposit and to assess the merits of continuing with further exploration work. A review of current worldwide underground bulk mining practices, and in particular an evaluation of the applicability of caving mining methods, were key components of the scope study. The scope study team concluded that derivatives of caving could be applied to the mining of Mont Porphyre, but additional diamond drilling was recommended to further define the deposit and improve the level of geotechnical information. Following the recommendations of the scope study team, a diamond drilling campaign was completed during the summer and fall of 1997. The 1997 drilling campaign had two secondary objectives, in addition to the primary objective of defining the limits of the orebody. The first objective was to improve the level of geotechnical information available for the characterisation of primary block cave fragmentation. The second objective was to improve the delineation of a lower grade intrusive core. A geomechanical investigation was conducted and included particular emphasis on geotechnical data collection and analysis. A review of the actual data collection process, including several trials of different core orientation techniques, will be included in the discussion.

Comment is made on the application of the legislation and these policies to development proposals in the Northern Territory. A brief review of criticisms by both developers and Land Councils is provided together with responses to these Criticisms.

In areas where land suitable for development is a scarce resource, an upgraded post-mining land use can result in economic benefits to both the mining company and to the community.A study undertaken at Aberdare Colliery near Ipswich during 198611987 assessed the costs and benefits of developing the site following mining for grazing, forestry and residential uses. The proposed fmal land use plan comprised a combination of these uses that can be upgraded to higher valued uses once subsidence monitoring of backfilled open-cut areas and dumps indicates that total settlement has reached acceptable levels for development to proceed.The study involved the documentation of existing site environmental parameters and the delineation of site opportunities and constraints. The unpredictable nature of settlement over backfilled open-cuts and overburden dumps represents the major constraint to urban development on mined areas.

A proper economic analysis of pit slope design must reflect the trade-off between the benefits and the increased risks of slope fail- ure inherent in steeper slope angles. However, no formal framework for a proper analysis existed to date. This paper describes the results of the past four years' effort in which a formal eco- nomic analysis framework was developed and tested through a case study. This framework, in essence, consists of the availability of tested procedures and com- puter programs. The procedures as well as the programs are divided into two broad functional categories; (1) the first category related to assessing the economic benefits and costs associated with various pit slope angles and (2) the second category that determines the overall financial impact which the assessed benefits and costs exert to the mine operator's overall economic stature.

Molten slag used in the secondary refining process (RH process) for the production of Ultra-Low C (ULC) steel is typically composed of CaO-Al2O3-MgOsat.-FetO with minor constituents. FetO in the RH slag is the main source of reoxidation of the molten ULC steel in the ladle by 2Al + 3(FetO) = (Al2O3) + 3Fe, thereby serving as the source of the alumina inclusions. On the other hand, FetO also enhances the fluidity of the slag, thereby increasing inclusion absorption capacity. Optimum slag chemistry design is therefore required to produce clear ULC steel. The reoxidation kinetics was investigated in the present study by employing high-temperature experiments and developing the reaction rate model. Initial compositions of slag ((% CaO)0/(% Al2O3)0 and (% FetO)0)) and reaction temperature were varied and change of [% Al] in the molten steel was measured. The rate-controlling step was analysed. It was found that the rate-controlling step in some cases changed during the reoxidation: from a mass transport of Al in the molten steel to a mixed transport including Al2O3 in the molten slag. The experimental data validated the reaction rate model based on the elucidated reaction mechanism and FactSage thermodynamic database. The model suggested that high (% CaO)0/(% Al2O3)0 suppresses the reoxidation only when (% FetO)0 is low (5 or lower in the present study).

Gas and coal dust, as potential harmful elements (PHEs) produced during mining, are considered two serious threats to the safe mining and the health of miners because of its explosive and pathogenic properties. To solve this problem, compound reagents enhanced water spraying technology was used to control the gas and coal dust in excavation working face in this study, and spray testing platform and wind tunnel were used to investigated the suppression effect for gas and coal dust. In addition, sink test, and agglomeration experiments were also used to analyse its suppression mechanism. Testing results show that the dust reduction efficiencies of compound reagents enhanced water spraying technology for four different particle sizes were 80 per cent, 91.43 per cent, 94.74 per cent and 94.46 per cent, and improved by 14 per cent, 10.86 per cent, 8.42 per cent and 4.25 per cent compared to water spraying. Moreover, the gas suppression efficiency also can be increased more than 20 per cent. Sink test, and agglomeration experiments results show that compound reagent improves the spreading efficiency of the liquid on the surface of the coal by changing its wettability, and this process can not only slow down the desorption rate of gas by forming a water-sealing effect in the coal surface indicated, but also promote the agglomeration of fine-grained coal dust.

 Increasing concern about the impact of alluvial mining discharges on the water quality of some West Coast rivers lead to a joint West Coast Gold Miners Associate, Trade and Industry funded study by Water Technology (NZ) Ltd. The objective of the study was to assess the treatability of West Coast alluvial gold mining discharges and to develop simple treatment systems which could be effectively adapted to a variety of sites in the region.   The approach was to apply standard water treatment techniques to field situations using low cost technology. Initially the various types of alluvial gold mining operations were identified then after preliminary site investigations and laboratory studies were carried out, site pilot plants were set up. The results of the trials particularly those using chemical aids were encouraging and it was found that chemical aid performance was largely dependent on the degree of mixing at and downstream of the chemical addition point. Design alterations to settling pond configurations in conjunction with optimised chemical addition yielded dramatic results in the form of reduced effluent turbidities.   A generalised approach to effluent treatment was developed and some of the specific 'mix and match' requirements were identified for different types of sites. The general conclusion is that improved physical treatment combined with good plant management and operation and (where necessary) chemical treatment, will produce water of acceptable discharge quality.

From the map displayed an idea of the comparative areas of the countries mentioned and Australia could be gained. It was rather amazing that Australia, with its great potentialities, had only about 5,150,000 people. New Guinea had over 750,000 people; Hawaii, a mere speck, 250,000; New Zealand, 1,300,000; North America, 130,000,000; Central America, over 15,500,000; and South America, over 65,000,000. Colombo was only six days from Fremantle, and it was only nine days from Capetown to Albany, and eight days from Albany to Hobart. The history of gold dredging in New Zealand, leading to the develop- ment of the `New Zealand Type' dredge is considered. Much of this infor- mation has come from contemporaneous publications by the New Zealand Department of Mines. Alluvial gold production declined after 1902, and ceased completely in 1982, but is now rising again. The progress of the New Zealand alluvial gold mining industry is considered, together with some of its more exceptional successes. Recent developments are com- pared to those of the past.
