Improvements in electron optics, field emission gun design, and X-ray detector technology have led to the development of a new class of microanalysis tools. By combining multiple wavelength dispersive (WD) spectrometers, spectral energy dispersive (ED) spectrometers and cathodoluminescence (CL) data sets, a wealth of information can be collected during routine electron beam mapping and analysis. In this paper, data collection on a field emission electron microprobe equipped with five wavelength dispersive, two silicon drift energy dispersive X-ray spectrometers and a wavelength dispersive linear array optical spectrometer has been automated with the optical, electron and X-ray signals being collected in parallel. To analyse the large hyperspectral data sets we have implemented an autoclustering strategy that can be used to produce a quantitative chemical phase map. The cathodoluminescence spectra can be deconvoluted to produce peak intensity maps, which are then converted into elemental speciation images with quantitative sensitivity down to parts per million levels. Both methods are illustrated using typical mineral processing examples, firstly a Ni-laterite sample is investigated with the fine-scale distribution of Ni examined in detail. Secondly, a scheelite sample with rare earth zoning in mapped and rare earth levels quantified.

The appraisal of mineral reserves by a lender is carried out at the initial stages in developing a loan for a mine. The depth of investigations is influenced by the competence of the explorer, the type of commodity and knowledge of the geological environment. The lender looks for a reserve life which exceeds the term of the loan plus contingencies for events such as cost over-runs, adverse markets and production difficulties. The physical features of importance are discussed. Factors with direct financial implications are considered for their incorp- oration in sensitivity analyses to allow risk appraisal. When satisfied, the lender can then proceed to review cash flow forecasts, the basic strength of the project, then determine with the borrower the components and alternat- ives of a loan package.

This paper covers period from 1973 through to 1988 and the mines of West Coast Mines, Elur Mine, North Mine and Risdon Zinc Smelter, now all part of the Pasminco Group. During this period, optimisation started with one mine (West Coast Mines) producing four Product concentrates with constant steady feed to the smelter and progressed to three mines producing eight products and a smelter varying feed inputs to maximise benefits. The initial optimisation was done manually using a desk top calculator and hand drawn graphs. This ultimately advanced to the use of PC plus linear programming software and spreadsheet generating relevant graphics. The financial benefits were achieved with no capital expenditure and increased from an initial $0.5 to $1.0 M/year (1973 $'s) to $5 to $10 M/year (1988 $'s).

The authors are looking at the behaviour of the mineral processing circuits by means of the simulators operating under random disturbance. The present paper deals with the fuzzy control systems in comparison with PID controllers. A series of tests are conducted on simplified prototype processes with (1) dead time plus first-order lag model and (2) diffusive model. In the next series of tests the self-sustained process model was introduced to improve control against dead time. In both cases fuzzy and PID controllers are optimised by EVOP method. Particular attention is paid to the effect of observation noise to analyse for the problems which can be fatal to practical applications in mineral processing. Finally the methods developed are applied to a closed-circuit wet grinding system simulator operating under random disturbance.

Tertiary laterite is extensively developed in the Darling Range area, but there is doubt that. the high relief areas along the Darling Scarp have been peneplaned. Three distinct laterite types are distinguished which are termed transported, introduced and residual laterites to avoid ambiguity. Transported laterites are recemented (primarily) lateritic materials and introduced laterites are chemical deposits of bog iron type. Residual laterites are formed in situ from the host material which can be either decomposed bedrock or detrital' clay, and the two varieties formed from these sources are termed residual A and residual B laterites. The genetic requirements for residual laterite formation are (1) host material, (2) porosity and permeability, (3) rainfall, (4) temperature, (5) relief and drainage, (6) vege- tation and (7) time. Previous theories on the origin of laterite appear to be inadequate and incompatible with field observations. Field investigations and drilling in the Darling Range area disclosed lenticular section and thickest laterite development on slopes and thin or oc- casionally no laterite development on crests. Lateritisation is considered a surface feature and the end product of the chemical weathering cycle. Obtaining correct assays for gold determinations relies on the correct methods being chosen and the assayer being made aware of the mineralogy of the sample and its general origin. Usually when a geologist or metallurgist obtains "incorrect" gold assays the problem can be traced to poor communication between the geologist or metallurgist and the assayer.

Risk management for resources and reserves includes examining the fundamental processes of data collection, interpretation, modelling and estimation. Newmont Australia has developed a procedures manual to assist mine sites to build Resource block models, estimate Ore Reserves, validate the outcome and report the results. An audit scheme has been developed to compliment the procedures manual by assessing the degree of site compliance with recommended practice. A score of between one and five stars is awarded to each site depending on its performance in the audit. Audits are undertaken by a team of three Newmont personnel over a three to five day period at each site. Scores are ultimately compared between sites and reviewed annually. The objective of the program is to encourage continuous improvement in the modelling, estimation, validation and reporting practices used at sites and in advanced projects. The scheme provides a method of risk management for the companyÆs biggest asset û its Ore Reserves. Newmont Mining Corporation is preparing to use the audit scheme internationally in part to conform with recent legislation requiring US companies to demonstrate that management systems and procedures are in place to monitor and verify the companyÆs assets.

The production of synthetic rutile from ilmenite using hydrochloric acid leaching is investigated. Previously published data is used to comment on the optimum process conditions. It is shown that the most important aspect to consider is the maximisation of impurity dissolution and the minimisation of titanium losses.

Two major types of economic secondary iron ores occur in the banded iron formation (BIF)-rich Hamersley Province of the Pilbara, Western Australia:dominant BIF-hosted bedded iron deposits (BID)detrital ore deposits (DID sensu lato), which are mainly hosted in the three province-wide Cenozoic sequences that include coeval non-ore sediments and comprise:a. the major Miocene, fluvial channel iron deposits (CID)b. the lesser Eocene and Pliocene detrital iron deposits (DID sensu stricto).Striking differences exist between the massive CID resources and the much smaller underlying and overlying DID. CID are essentially riverine alluvial ooidal rocks with abundant small fossil wood fragments and variable iron peloids, but with only extremely rare recognisable lithic remnants. The original matrix is typically ramifying layered goethite. Eocene DID are mainly alluvial with minor pisoids, whereas Pliocene–Quaternary DID are dominantly coarse colluvial gravels, both derived from and largely retaining the original textures of BID, hard cap or variably ferruginised surface BIF. The colluvial DID matrix is typically ferroan-aluminous soil, resulting in canga where replaced by goethite, which may be dehydrated to hematite by exposure. The Cenozoic deposits occur in two dominant geomorphological environments: the southern Marra Mamba to Brockman Iron Formation strike valleys containing all three Cenozoic sequences and the much later northern Brockman Iron Formation plateau valleys that include only the Miocene and Pliocene sequences. The Cenozoic detritals formed in different climatic regimes, with an extended dry period forming a prominent province-wide dehydrated carapace on the Eocene DID. The Miocene ‘optimum’ followed with its thick scrub-covered deep regolith that produced the fossil wood-rich CID and was succeeded by the arid cool period of the Oakover limestone/calcrete. A major renewal of exposure and erosion in the Pliocene resulted in the extensive iron gravels of the Pliocene–Quaternary.CITATION:Morris, R C, 2015. This paper describes a hybrid ventilation system, which uses secondary fans that also act as de-facto primary fans to extract fresh airflow from the mine intake raise system. Also discussed are the associated problems such as uncontrolled recirculation, inadequate decline airflow, fire safety issues, prolonged blast fume clearance times, high air temperatures in main access routes, neutralisation of mine air cooling by heat from secondary distribution fans, increased ventilation system complexity, reduced flexibility and high pressure differentials (which cause safety issues with personnel access and reduce secondary ventilation system performance).Practical suggestions are provided on options to avoid these problems listed.CITATION:Derrington, A S, 2013. Mining companies and operations across the globe typically target best practice financial management, along with a focus on economically driven mine plans. Not only is this inherent in running a successful mining business, but also critical in addressing investor scrutiny. The standards for social and environmental practices is less consistent than this, with most companies adopting standards that are driven through legislative and compliance requirements of the nations in which they operate. Although there is still room for improvement, Australian is a country that stands at the forefront of social and environmental legislation, driving more sustainable planning practices for mining operations, with an ever-increasing focus on mine closure considerations. Of the many nations yet to reach such a legislative position, Kazakhstan is a place where some companies are driving towards world class standards beyond what is government mandated. So, it is imperative for the lithium industry to prioritise HSE measures to protect workers, environment and surrounding communities. Implementing robust safety protocols and technology helps ensure the sustainability of mining operations and contributes to the overall responsible development of the industry. In this work we present how the Chilean lithium mining industry becomes a safer and more compliant industry using digital transformation (Cochilco, 2018; Bradley et al, 2013; Cabello, 2022).

Geotechnical investigations have played a key role in influencing decisions for development of the Porgera Gold Project in the highlands of Papua New Guinea. Porgera is located 130 km west-northwest of Mt. Hagen in steep mountainous terrain with high rainfall. Much of the site is underlain by weak mudstone of the Chim Formation and creeping colluvial soils. Landsliding is common on the steeper slopes and in the valley floors. Structures have had to be sited to avoid areas susceptible to these movements. Early stage feasibility investigations included studies of tailings dam and waste rock dump sites, processing plant sites and hydroelectriic schemes. Further studies, leading into the design stage included the Enga Highway upgrading, water supply and power supply schemes. As construction for the project proceeds geotechnical input remains at a high level, with emphasis now on maintaining viable stable sites and refining data on which designs were based.

In the paper a stochastic model of the batch sieving procedure is presen- ted resulting in a system of ordinary differential equations to describe the time dependence of the mass fractions on the sieve surfaces being randomly influenced by sampling errors. The coefficients of the system can be interpreted as sieving velocities. Their dependence on the sieving con- ditions is discussed and a special type of functional relationship and methods are suggested to determine this function experimentally. Moreover the applicability of the approach is demonstrated by an example to evaluate the particle size distribution, if only the result of incomplete test sieving is known. For this problem a rough error estimation is performed.

The Australian glass sand industry produces some 2.8 million tonnes per annum of silica sand, of which about 2.0 million tonnes are exported and the rest is for the domestic market. Approximate production rates for each Australian state are listed.The variety of processing methods used in the currently exploited deposits reflects the size, location, and characteristics of the various deposits and the requirement of the end market/s. The industry uses to a large extent equipment developed for the separation of mineral sands, particularly as it applies to low grade heavy mineral deposits, where low cost, high capacity and metallurgically efficient equipment has proved eminently suitable for the production of the low value glass sands.The requirements of the domestic market, as well as those of the present and potential export markets are discussed covering quality requirements, distribution channels and other factors critical to success.

More and more mining companies are becoming aware of the potential benefits of sensor-based ore sorting and process optimisation. This is reflected by a growing number of analysers that are available for drill hole logging, conveyor belt scanning, ore sorting, slurry analysis, etc. These tools all rely on a specific sensor technology that can be used to detect a material property such as colour, density, mineralogy, or chemical elements. However, all sensors have restrictions on the minerals and/or elements that can be detected or inferred. This is caused by the physical mechanisms behind the technology and depends on mineral concentration and compositional heterogeneity of the ore. Since nearly every ore deposit is unique in composition and characterised by different geological features that drive heterogeneity, no one-size-fits-all sensor solution is available. This makes it difficult for mining professionals to find suitable sensing technologies that can help them solve problems and improve processes for their specific ore types.

The primary objective of this research was to address the demands imposed on self- contained self-rescuer (SCSR) performance dur- ing simulated escapes. The results clearly indicate that SCSR performance, apart from the inherent technological features, is a function primarily of the physical and anthro- pometric features of the wearer, and of the particular nature of the escape route. These factors consequently play a major role in the planning of any escape strategy, which may vary from mine to mine. It is therefore concluded that each mine would have to formulate its own escape strategy which in turn would depend on the choice of SCSR, and the particular escape Route.

Financial markets are subject to constant change and project finance, as a product within these markets, adapts and will continue to adapt with those changes. A meaningful discussion of these adaptations requires an understanding of differences between non-, limited and full recourse project finance. The reasons sponsors seek and lenders provide project finance are also pertinent in this context. Arranging a project, financing package can be a canplex and time consuming task. An important first step is choosing the right advisor for the assignment and then structuring and tailoring the financing before approaching prospective lenders. The last thirty years has seen changes in the needs of sponsors and the ability of lenders to meet them. These shifts in preference may well be a guide to the future. Several major project financings successfully canpleted in Australia in the last few years and more recent examples are broadly discussed. Project finance will be keenly sought in the future and the form and nature it takes will continue to vary.

In most mining operations the ore undergoes several processes such as drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, crushing, grinding and liberation to become the final salable product. Drilling and blasting is an important step in this process chain and itÆs results such as fragmentation, muckpile shape and looseness, dilution, damage and rock softening effect the efficiency of downstream processes. The value created per ton of broken ore is the difference between the price it commands when sold as the final product and the cost to produce it. Traditionally, the total process in the mining industry is classified into two groups as mining and milling. These are managed as separate cost centres inspite of the interdependency. Each process has a budget and production target and emphasis is usually on maximising production (tons) and minimising cost rather than the overall profitability of the whole business unit. The efficiency of each process is considered to be satisfactory as long as they are within budget and meet the production targets. The mine and mill managers usually try to optimise each process independently rather than the entire process. This paper discusses the potential pitfalls of decreasing the drilling and blasting cost per ton of broken rock without considering its impact on downstream processes. It introduces a holistic approach to blast optimisation by identifying and measuring the leverage that blast results have on different downstream processes and then optimising the blast design to achieve the results that maximise the overall profitability rather than just minimising the drilling and blasting costs. This paper demonstrates the benefits of such a holistic approach to blasting based on computer model simulations and field studies from metal and open cut coal mining.
