Coeur d'Alene Mines is a precious metals producer which is dedi- cated to growth through it's exploration and acquisitions efforts. We foster and support these activities by providing our staff with long-term financial support, the encouragement to proceed with their projects and ideas, and a firm belief that we will be successful. Coeur's corporate headquarters are located in beautiful, historic Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Our main mining operations are Rochester, locate near Lovelock, Nevada, Coeur Mine,located near Wallace, Idaho, and Thunder Mountain, located in central Idaho. Our Ken- sington Gold project is located about 45 miles north of Juneau in southeast Alaska. We have exploration offices located in Reno, Nevada, and Santiago, Chile. At this time, Coeurd'Alene Mines produces precious metals from mines located in the United States. Our Rochester open-pit opera- tion, which is 100 per cent owned and operated, is located in Nevada. Presently, this operation produces 5.5 to 6 million ounces of silver per year and 60-70,000 ounces of gold. We move 65,000 to 70,000 tons of rock per day of which about 23,000 tons is ore. The ore is crushed, stacked on permanent heaps and leached. The recovery is by Merrill-Crowe. Although the average grade is rela- tively low, 1.4 ounces per ton silver and 0.012 ounces per ton Au, the operation is very low cost. Our cost of production is less than $4.00 per silver equivalent ounce. Rochester is anunusual operation in that the crushed rock stacks without much compaction and the ores are easily leached. The final height on our heaps will be about 220', and overall recovery will be about 55 per cent of the silver and about 85 per cent of the gold. Reserves at Rochester are expanding and are now adequate for at least fifteen years of opera- Tion.

Multiple indicator kriging (MIK) has been used in the minerals industry for some decades. As one of the non-linear estimation methodologies, MIK has advantages related to resolving multiple or mixed populations, high variability data and strongly skewed distributions. Applying the MIK methodology requires a lot more effort when compared to other non-linear methodologies, for example localised uniform conditioning. This is due not only to the variogram modelling for multiple indicators, but the validation is also very important because the panel model is fundamental for follow-up work, including the generation of recoverable resources at the local or SMU scale. Apart from this, only a few reported case studies of MIK have documented post-processing of the estimated modelled distribution, representing the probability distribution at point scale at un-sampled locations. The MIK post processing should include the change of support from the point scale to the panel scale, and then the extraction of quantile values from the panel conditional cumulative distribution function (CCDF) for localisation of grades into the SMUs within each panel, based on a ranking estimate marking the SMUs from high to low. In this paper, we present a case study on a gold deposit with the MIK method with full-post processing implemented for recoverable resources. The MIK point estimate was carried out with an indirect lognormal change of support from point to panel scale, and localisation was done with a custom script. The localised uniform conditioning (LUC) method was also applied for comparison purposes. The comparison shows that MIK has advantages compared to LUC when comes to capturing the high-grades, especially when mixed or varying anisotropy is present within the mineralisation.

Western AustraliaÆs Mining Act 1978 was amended in 2010 to provide for the requirement of a mine closure plan to be submitted to the Department of Mines and Petroleum (DMP) for approval, as part of a mining proposal application. The mine closure plan must be prepared in accordance with approved guidelines. Guidelines for mine closure plans were developed to assist the mining industry in Western Australia to plan and implement effective closure of mines. The guidelines focus on the application of integrated mine closure principles and industry best practice information on mine closure. This, includes stakeholder consultation, risk based approach, data collection and monitoring, development of completion criteria and financial provision.Due to the potential high level of public interest in the guidelines, extensive consultation with stakeholders was conducted. For drainage sediment to be used as a successful sampling medium in reconnaissance geochemical surveys, the length of any dispersion train from a typical target must be great enough for it to be detected by a widely spaced sampling pattern, and must also be homogeneous enough to avoid it being missed by the unfortunate selection of a random low value sample. Elements which occur in stream sediments in the form of discrete heavy minerals present two special problems in this regard. Since the element is concentrated into a few particles, the medium is extremely heterogeneous, which makes representative sampling impossible unless very large samples are taken, while the high specific gravity of such grains leads to their being concentrated in traps along the stream bed. Several ways of overcoming these difficulties have been suggested. Among these the "schlich" test, in which heavy material obtained by panning is taken for analysis is among the most popular. However, the results of the present study indicate that while this method improves the nature of the patterns obtained, they are still far from satisfactory. Alternative methods of sample preparation, including the taking of light material for analysis, appear to provide better answers to the problem. In the area studied this approach eliminated most of the "noise" associated with the data obtained by other methods, as well as giving an extended dispersion pattern.

The occurrence of fluorine in the copper/gold concentrates produced by Ok Tedi Mining Limited has provided a series of challenges to metallurgists since 1988. Although fluorine is distributed throughout the gangue minerals contained within Ok Tedi ores, itsÆ presence in talc and phlogopite (naturally floating fluorosilicates) has proven to be the predominate sources of fluorine in the final concentrate. Initial treatment for the fluorosilicates consisted of the use of a carboxy-methyl cellulose depressant added to the flotation cleaners. This was superceded in 1998 with the installation of a fluorine reverse flotation process for the removal of naturally floating fluorosilicates from the final concentrate when the fluorine content of the final concentrate exceeds smelter-defined trigger points. The fluorine reverse process is similar to by-product molybdenite concentrate production in that sodium hydrosulfide is used to depress copper/gold flotation whilst allowing the fluorosilicates to float. The process was installed in two parallel modules (to match the existing grinding/flotation modules at Ok Tedi), each consisting of a closed rougher/cleaner circuit configuration. Both rougher and cleaner cells are Jameson Cells from MIM Process Technologies, with the selection based on both processing characteristics and available construction space. This paper discusses both the nature of fluorine in-, and its removal from-, Ok Tedi copper/gold concentrates.

One of the main challenges for current and future mining and processing methodologies is to understand the characteristics of the rock so that its behaviour in one or more parts of the mining process chain can be predicted. Features such as rock texture, mineralogy or border complexity between minerals control how the rock behaves from the processing plant through to the final products, including tailings disposal and thus can affect the feasibility of the project from technical, economic and environmental impact perspectives. Understanding how the mineralogy and texture of rock affect its behaviour in mineral processing is a demanding area of research and is essential knowledge in predicting the processability of complex ores in different stages. This study aims to demonstrate that different types of relevant information can be extracted from a range of currently available analytical methods. However, this information can be used in a complementary way for building a more comprehensive rock characterisation at the microscale and better-predicting ore processing characteristics from the intact rock through to tailing disposal. The thermal conductivity of slag is critical for the efficiency of high temperature metallurgical processes such as the smelting reduction of ferroalloys, the ladle refining and the continuous casting mold flux in steelmaking. Experimental determination of slag’s thermal conductivity is fraught with challenges, as seen in yielding data for the SiO2-Al2O3-CaO system that are often inconsistent and widely dispersed. In molten slags of this system, thermal transport occurs via phonons within the network structure. To quantitatively describe thermal conductivity based on the microstructure, hightemperature Raman spectroscopy was employed to measure the silicate tetrahedra Qi (i = 0, 1, 2, 3), with Q4 species inferred from mass balance. This study also integrated molecular dynamics simulations to provide a fundamental understanding of the microstructure units distributions. Machine learning algorithms, especially deep neural networks, were applied to establish the relationship between slag composition and the configuration of tetrahedra. The thermal conductivities were then connected with silicate tetrahedra Qi using an Arrhenius-type formalism. This study sets the stage for extending our findings to more complex, multicomponent slags, enhancing their practical application in industrial processes.

The role of chemical speciation in alkaline cyanide solutions is discussed by reference to recent experimental data from the authors' laboratories. It is shown that serious gaps exist in our present knowledge of the thermodynamics of cyanide complexes in solution. Nevertheless, using the available data and the JESS suite of computer programs it has been possible to develop a simplified chemical speciation model for alkaline cyanide solutions under conditions relevant to the gold extraction process. Some possible implications of the model for plant operations are Discussed.

The increasing demand for batteries is resulting in the development of large-scale projects for the production of key battery metals such as nickel and vanadium. Several of these projects plan to extract the battery metals from the ore via chemical roasting, leaving large volumes of waste iron oxides after fuming and/or leaching of the battery metals. These iron oxide wastes can be smelted in a HIsmelt furnace using biochar as the reductant, to produce clean, green pig iron with net zero carbon emissions. This green pig iron can then be added to basic oxygen or electric arc steelmaking furnaces to produce green, net zero carbon, steel. This paper describes the flow sheets and the economics for potential projects producing green pig iron via HIsmelt using waste iron oxides from nickel and vanadium production plants.

Recent studies carried out to support the development of a strategy for the New Zealand mineral industry by the NZ Minerals Industry Association have included investigations of mineral potential, and the development of scenarios for realising this countryÆs mineral potential by 2010. New economic research is applying a general equilibrium model to quantify the opportunity cost of this potential. The model analyses separately four categories of land (private land and three categories of Crown land) and identifies four distinct mineral classes û precious metals, industrial minerals, coal and aggregate. It investigates the economic effect of the increased availability of mineral resources on the mining industry itself, on other industry sectors and on the NZ economy generally, including its impact on unemployment, GDP and household welfare.The analyses suggest that increases in the level of GDP of between 1.9 per cent and 3.4 per cent may be obtained by utilising New ZealandÆs mineral wealth to varying degrees. The mineral industry sectors are significant beneficiaries under all scenarios; mineral output increases by between two and five times its current level. However, the flow-on effects to the rest of the economy, and to households, are also significant. The analyses show that household income, adjusted for changes in consumer prices, can be expected to increase by between 1.6 per cent and 2.7 per cent. This results largely from increased employment.

This paper outlines the design, justification and performance of a gravity circuit upgrade at the Marvel Loch treatment plant. The design of the upgrade was simple but effective. The key components of the upgrade were the addition of a sluice and a second Knelson Concentrator. The sluice was installed as a pre-concentration step. The upgrade also included the purchase of a Mineral Cone to treat the increased quantity of gravity concentrate. The cost was low because of the use of mostly second-hand equipment. The result was that for a cost of $75 000 the gravity recovery doubled and the overall recovery increased by over one per cent. This paper shows that you do not need to spend millions of dollars to be innovative and successful.

Attention is drawn to the largest eruptions with dense rock equivalent (D.R.E.) volumes approx-imating 50 km3. These have been strongly clustered during the last 40 000 years, with 11 recognised in the period 35 000 to 22 000 years ago, and 10 in about the last 9000 years, but none in the period 22 000 to 9000 years ago. With the latest such eruption, at Tambora, only 175 years ago, it is likely that we remain in a period of increased activity. During the last 100 000 years, roughly the period during which modern Homo sapiens has existed as a species, there has only been one eruption an order of magnitude larger (>_ 500 km3 D.R.E.). This took place at Lake Toba, Sumatra, about 75 000 years ago, and is estimated to have deposited ash to a thickness of a centimetre or so in parts of Ethiopia, Somaliland, Saudi Arabia and Iran, and to a thickness of a few millimetres in the eastern Mediterranean. The average interval between global eruptions of this magnitude is probably about 40 000 to 50 000 years. Insufficient work on the Quaternary history of volcanoes has been carried out to suggest where the next such eruption might occur. At Yellowstone, which has been well studied, the average interval between very large explosive eruptions is about 700 000 ¦ 120 000 years.As a prerequisite for magnitude-frequency analysis of eruptions, and hazard and risk impact assessments, it is important to classify past eruptions in a consistent manner. In an attempt to find a universally applicable method to estimate order of magnitude D.R.E. volumes from the distribution of airfall tephra, an empirical correction has been derived for the elongation of tephra dispersal fans due to wind. Dispersion distances for various thicknesses of tephra, recalculated for windless conditions, have been obtained from a study of about 40 tephra isopach maps for which D.R.E. volumes have been calculated, and a range of distances derived, equivalent to D.R.E. volumes from 106 m3

The perceived and actual impact of government mineral policy upon the government share from gold mining revenues is assessed for ten key countries in which the gold sector is of relevance in advancing economic growth. Five African and five South American jurisdictions are considered, namely Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mali, South Africa and Tanzania from Africa; and Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Guyana and Peru in South America.Both the headline corporate income tax rate and royalty level are identified as poor indicators for the total government share. In addition, significant differences between industry perception and actual government tax levels are identified by this study. The quantitative financial analysis shows that there is no clear relationship between individual taxation rates, taken in isolation, and the overall average effective tax rate (AETR) paid by the project over its life. Neither companies nor governments should use individual taxation rates, or industry perceptions, in isolation to assess the overall competitiveness or equity of a country’s minerals taxation regime – such analysis can be very misleading.In this study, the perceived impact is determined from the well-established Fraser Institute survey published each year, and in 2014 compared 122 minerals jurisdictions globally. The actual impact is determined from quantitative modelling of the financial performance of a hypothetical gold mining project in each country. The technical parameters of the project are held constant; instead the differing mineral policies in each jurisdiction are applied to determine the resultant impact upon the relative share of the economic rents delivered to both private and public sectors. Pyrrhotite is the predominant gangue mineral at Renison comprising about 60 percent of the sulphides in an average ore blend. It exists as two crystal structures - monoclinic and hexagonal. Monoclinic pyrrhotite is the slowest floating of all minerals but is ferromagnetic and hence recoverable more efficiently by low intensity magnetic wet drum separators than flotation. This paper discusses the installation and commissioning of four 0.915 m x 3.0 m, 0.1 Tesla permanent magnet, wet drum separators prior to sulphide roughing flotation. Planned circuit and process control modifications to better accommodate magnetic separation into Renison's flowsheet will be Discussed.

The Middle Proterozoic metasedimentary rocks of the Belt Supergroup contain important metallic mineral deposits like the diagenetic sediment-hosted stratiform copper mineralization, including the Troy (Spar Lake) deposit and the epigenetic hydrothermal veins in the lower Belt and Ravalli Group in the Coeur d'Alene district. Magnetite (Fe3O4) is a common and widespread accessory mineral in these rocks and can have multiple origins including ore stage in deposits, mobilization stage in source rocks, metamorphism of red beds and alteration mineral in thin halos enveloping Ag-rich veins in the Coeur dÆAlene district. As shown in several classic studies, the composition of magnetite from igneous rocks varies significantly in response to controlling factors such as melt composition, temperature, silica activity, and oxygen and sulphur fugacity. Therefore, the distinctively different geologic settings within the Belt Supergroup strongly suggest that there may be differences in the magnetite compositions. However, initial microprobe analyses detected no variation in magnetite composition.   Three possibilities may give an adequate explanation for these initial results: 1.      the magnetite formed primarily as pure Fe3O4, 2.      one or more tectonothermal events led to regional scale re-equilibration that affected all rocks in the field area, and 3.      the variations in the composition are below the detection limit of the microprobe.

Serious Injury and Fatality (SIF) prevention remains a priority focus within high-risk industries sector. A major mining operation sought to strengthen their approach to the management of high-risk activities through an in-depth review of all historical incidents that had serious injury or fatality potential (SIFp) events (sometimes known as hi-potential events). The analysis found that the organisation invested a disproportionate level of resources, time and effort on low consequence incidents with a high proportion of SIFp incidents going under the radar. It was found that 76 per cent of SIFp incidents were rated in moderate or lower risk categories and conversely, almost half of those incidents with a ‘serious risk’ rating had little or no potential for a serious outcome. As a result of this project, the operation engaged in a renewed focus on critical risk management and enhanced its operating cadence in critical risk for the workforce. This included bow tie analysis, an update to critical risk standards and increased workforce engagement in the use of critical control verifications in the field. Data analytics with lead and lag indicators continue to provide senior leadership team and risk owners with an understanding of exposure for SIFp and control effectiveness. The audience will take away learnings from a real-world case study that provides data-driven insights of the human, local and organisational factors contributing to incidents with SIF potential. In addition, participants will understand the steps taken to categorise and analyse this incident data and the initiatives currently being implemented by the organisation as a result.

Determination of stress-strain behaviour of rocks plays a crucial role in understanding the response of rocks during loading. However, it is a tedious, expensive and a time-consuming process to obtain such characteristics both in the laboratory and in situ. On the other hand, non-destructive testing methods such as ultrasonic velocities can produce a reliable and fast solution to indentify state of strain and stress in rocks. The present paper aims to provide insight into the relations amongst ultrasonic wave velocities, amplitudes and deformability properties of porous siltstone under compressive loading. For this purpose, pulse (vP) and shear wave velocities (vS) along with amplitudes (AP - AS), and applied loads with resultant strain were measured simultaneously so that response of siltstone to compression can be evaluated. In addition, initial vP and vS were recorded at the beginning of each test to calculate dynamic elastic properties of the specimens. This provided a comparison between static and dynamic elasticity properties of siltstone. Crack damage associated with the onset of dilation was also investigated. The results showed that there is a non-linear logarithmic relation between velocities and stress-strain level for siltstones.

The mining of mineral sands in coastal aquifers is often constrained by other land use conflicts and inappropriate controls imposed through a lack of understanding of environmental interactions and processes. The recent experience with the Tea Gardens mining operation illustrates how increasing our knowledge and understanding leads to more effective management of environmental problems. As well as a source of heavy minerals, the Tea Gardens sand bed serves as a town water supply source. From past experience it was believed that mining could cause undesirable increases in dissolved iron concentrations in the aquifer, but the reasons and mechanisms for this phenomenon were not clear. A water monitoring program was therefore designed for the mining operation which was aimed at protecting the water supply borefield from any detremental effects. After one year the results of the monitoring program were assessed in the light of new knowledge and understanding of iron hydrochemistry. It was found that the existing program was not achieving some of its major aims, and was therefore modified to a more effective and cost efficient program.

"The Jaguar project is relatively unique in that it was evaluated, financed, built and operated to completion within the last ten years, providing the opportunity to holistically review and reconcile expectations against the actual outcomes. It is a case study that allows wider conclusions to be drawn with respect to the risks and opportunities involved with project evaluation and execution.Jaguar is located in the Leonora Mining District of Western Australia and was commissioned in mid-2007 as an underground accessed, single high-grade volcanic-hosted massive sulfide (VHMS) deposit with an on-site concentrator, producing copper and zinc concentrates exported via the Port of Geraldton to South-East Asian markets.The feasibility study (FS) had several iterations (JML, 2005a); the last dated July 2005 was specifically targeted to secure project funding, and summarised the reserves-only portion of the resource and its planned exploitation. The commissioning of the mine was the transition for the owner Jabiru Metals NL from junior explorer to producer and the project was the dominant asset of the company.Jaguar operated through several significant deviations from the linear project plan set out in the FS, including the Global Financial Crisis (GFC), a corporate takeover and disruption to the mine plan from the onset of material geotechnical issues. Whilst the GFC or mining disruption were not specifically predicted in the FS or peer reviews, the generic effects of the events were assessed in the project risk assessment and they influenced subsequent management decisions. In parallel to the internal project-specific risks, the short planned life of Jaguar was a risk to the continuation of the corporate entity which was being addressed by significant investment into brownfields exploration to extend or replicate the project, and ultimately added value such that attracted a corporate takeover.Holistically, the project delivered the returns predicted in the FS, but in a much different guise than was expected.
