Invariably when a new plant is cammissioned operations personnel on takeover look at ways and means of reducing certain restrictions and improving process conditions. These improvements are generally of a mechanical/engineering nature with minor metallurgical alterations to fine tune and maximise recovery. Most operations are continually reviewing and updating existing equipment and equipment spares to gain the maximum performance hereby reducing operating costs. Design of current carbon-in-pulp/carbon- in-leach (CIP/CIL) plants has evolved to such a high degree that many of the medium sized plants can have a "blue printed" design from one to the next if the same engineering designer is used.

The flotation cells used to upgrade ultrafine metallurgical coal (-250 µm) are usually poorly controlled leading to unnecessary loss of combustibles from the flotation system. This is mainly because coal flotation cells are typically controlled for process stability rather than optimisation of flotation performance. This is especially true for a flotation device commonly used in coal applications in Australia – the Jameson Cell. This then provides an opportunity to improve the flotation performance by shifting from a stabilising control strategy to a proactive optimising control strategy. For an optimising control strategy, the control system will require a means of relating and then measuring in real-time, the effect of changing operating conditions on the coal flotation performance. Hence, the major aim of this work is to propose a possible model-informed process control strategy that could be used for real-time performance optimisation. In this study, industrial site work was conducted on an industrial-scaled Jameson Cell at a Coal Handling and Preparation Plant (CHPP) in Central Queensland, Australia where superficial gas velocity was controlled to six different levels. At the same time, other process variables such as froth depth and flotation feed properties were measured. The empirical models developed from this study suggested that combustible recovery is a function of superficial gas velocity, froth depth, feed solid content and feed ash content and that a peak in combustible recovery existed as a function of superficial gas velocity. This led to the development of a model-informed control strategy that aimed to maximise the combustible recovery by determining and then operating the cell at the superficial gas velocity at which the peak occurs. This peak superficial gas velocity was found to be only a function of feed solid content. Based on these findings it would seem possible to operate a Jameson cell at peak performance by online measurement of feed solid content, prediction of the optimum superficial gas velocity and stabilising control to maintain operation at that superficial gas velocity set point. The development of this modelinformed control strategy can serve as a basis for the development of a more sophisticated modelpredictive control (MPC) system. However, more work will need to be done to improve the predictivity of the combustible recovery model by measuring and modelling performance over a wider range of operating conditions.

Ore deposit modelling is becoming an increasingly accepted tool in mineral exploration. Successful models have already been proposed for several ore deposits of base metals and gold, but tin has so far received comparatively little attention, perhaps because of an excessive preoccupatioi with alluvial operations. This situation is rapidly changing and some of the world's most profitable and newly commissioned tin mines are large, primary tin deposits. Some basic principles of ore deposit modelling are briefly reviewed and the fallacy of an excessive reliance on grade tonnage diagrams based on the tin industry worldwide is discussed. The four proposed models and submodels of large, hard-rock, tin deposits focus on basic concepts such as the spatial relationship with "tin granites", depth of emplacement and the level of erosion. General concepts are drawn. The modelling of large primary tin deposits is reviewed not only in its geological and exploration aspects but also in its mining and economic implications.

Goodenough and Fergusson Islands, in eastern PapuaNew Guinea, lie in an area of crustal extension on the western end of the Woodlark Basin seafloor spreading system. The islands are made up of a number of mountainous domes of complexely deformed basement, and these are intruded by large bodies of granodiorite. The domes are bounded by curved shear zones and faults dipping outwards at angles of around 25 to 45¦. The cores of the domes contain lower crustal rocks of eclogite and granulite facies, these rocks have undergone retrograde metamorphism in the outer sheared zones. Movement indicators on the shear zones indicate a complex moverm.-It geometry which does not fit the models proposed by earlier workers. These dome-like structures are similar to the metamorphic core complexes of the western United States Cordilleran region, however there are a number of aspects which do not fit with the models proposed for the development of metamorphic core complexes. Uplift of the metamorphic basement probably resulted from a combination of forces associated with the extension of the crust and the intrusion and emplacement of granodiorite plutons.

Century, a major shale hosted zinc deposit in the Riversleigh Fold Zone of northwest Queensland's Mount Isa Basin, was discovered by CRA Exploration in 1989. A total of 322 drill holes, completed by the end of 1992, define a resource of 118 Mt of mineralisation averaging 10.2 per cent zinc, 1.5 per cent lead and 36 grams per tonne silver. Mineralisation is developed in the upper portion of Lawn Hill Formation Unit 4 (Pmh4). The intersection of the Termite Range and Little Range Faults, major regional structures, may have been important in controlling mineralisation development. Three listric normal faults, and an unconformity between Proterozoic rocks hosting mineralisation and overlying Cambrian carbonates, divide the deposit into three distinct blocks. The deposit is essentially blind, outcropping in only two places. The deposit is characterised by an extremely simple sulphide mineral assemblage, sphalerite being the most common sulphide phase. Pyrite, the most common phase in many other shale-hosted zinc-lead deposits, accounts for only five per cent of all sulphides present. Siderite is the principal non-sulphide phase present. Both sphalerite and galena have near stoichiometric compositions. Sulphides are confined to carbonaceous shale horizons. Intervening siltstones are essentially barren. Shale and siltstone beds forming the mineralised sequence can be correlated across the entire deposit area. Systematic grade variation occurs within each mineralised shale bed. Although sulphide laminae parallel primary lithologic layering, the point of most intense mineralisation development transgresses stratigraphy. Bituminous material is intimately associated with sulphide mineralisation.

The major Permian coal deposits of N.S.W. are in the Sydney-Bowen Basin and associated small deposits occur in structurally isolated areas; a further deposit is present in the Oaklands Basin. - The Sydney-Bowen Basin in New South Wales comprises the sub basins, the Sydney Basin and the Gunnedah Basin. Coal measures in these basins are near the top of the Permian succession and within and below an underlying marine sequence. The coal deposits can be conveniently described in units in which the coal geology is homogeneous. The Clyde Coal Measures and Yarrunga Coal Measures contain no seams of economic significance and occur beneath the marine beds in the south of the Sydney Basin. The Greta Coal Measures are economically significant and represent a brief interlude in the marine sequence in the north of the Sydney Basin and equivalents are present in the east of the Gunnedah Basin. The Tomago Coal Measures crop out above the marine sequence east from the Lochinvar Anticline and dip southeast to uneconomic depths. The Newcastle Coal Measures are historically and economically very important and overlie the Tomago Coal Measures and these measures will continue to be important although future mining will be faced with greater depths. To the west of the Lochinvar Anticline the Singleton Coal Measures, equivalent to the Tomago and Newcastle Coal Measures, crop out. This unit represents the thickest development of coal measures in the State and has a very large potential for both open cut and underground mining. Equivalents of the Singleton Coal Measures, the Black Jack Coal Measures and the Booroomin Group crop out on the east side of the Gunnedah Basin and probably are widespread across the Basin. They have less economic potential than the Singleton Coal Measures. In the southwest of the Gunnedah Basin, Illawarra/Singleton Coal Measures crop out over extensive areas and possibly have a large potential for underground mining under low cover. The Illawarra Coal Measures are exposed along the western margin of the Sydney Basin and thicken as they dip into the Basin across a shelf. The outcrop area is currently mined and the shelf has considerable potential for future mining. The highest rank coals in the State are in the Illawarra Coal Measures in the south of the Sydney Basin. The deepest coal mining is in this area and its continuing success is of great importance to the future exploitation of the resources of the Basin. The Tomago, Newcastle, Singleton and Illawarra Coal Measures extend into and meet in the central area of the Sydney Basin but they are under thick cover and are not considered to be economic at present. Permian coal measures occur in isolated areas in the New England Fold Belt and have limited economic potential. The Oaklands Basin in the south of the State contains a large reserve of low rank coal.

Three, and possibly four, distinct types of quartz-vein associated gold mineralisation are recognised in New Zealand. They are: epithermal, schist-hosted, metagreywacke-hosted and metamorphic core complex associated types. Each has a unique geological environment and structural regime which has provided the gold source, scavenging mechanism, emplacing mechanism and geometry. Each has a characteristic suite of associated metals and trace elements. The first three types form economically important gold deposits while the fourth type have been historically worked for gold and base metals. Intense exploration is currently being focussed on all four types.The epithermal type is typified by the extensive vein systems of Martha Hill, Karangahake and Golden Cross and numerous smaller examples. The veins were deposited in a near surface active volcanic environment from deeply circulating hot water. Their structure is tensional, veins are vertical-to sub-vertical and have limited depth. Their geochemistry is identical to that in active felsic hydrothermal centres in the central North Island. Major minerals are gold, pyrite, arsenopyrite, galena, chalcopyrite, sphalerite and argentite.

The objective of the paper is to develop an understanding of the influence of caving on powered support rating by examining the geology and support performance at two sites which represent the current extremes in support rating, ie 6/240 Ton supports operating in the Hirst Seam at Solsgirth Colliery, Scotland, and 4/900 Tonne supports operating in the Bulli Seam, West Cliff Colliery, Australia. A conceptual model is introduced which considers the coal ahead of the face, the powered support, and the caved waste to be three yielding foundations which interact to control the subsidence of the roof strata. Different caving mechanisms are identified for the strata of the Hirst and Bulli Seams, ihese mechanisms being related to rock properties, ie to the palaeogeography and depositional conditions at each site, producing caved wastes with different yield characteristics. The results obtained for convergence and support reaction during production cycles at both sites are analysed to show the manner in which support reaction is developed, indicating the importance of high setting load densities in the Bulli Seam. Evaluation of the work done on the subsiding roof strata during typical production cycles by two of the yielding foundations, ie the powered support and the caved waste immediately behind the powered support, is used to further demonstrate the influence of caving mechanisms on support rating.

Rheology is the science which deals with the deformation and flow of matter. Thus rheology is concerned with the flow of any material. The mining industry is concerned with digging things out of the ground, extracting the good stuff and throwing away the bad stuff. In the upgrading processes associated with mining, ie mineral processing, wet techniques are used where the primary material being handled is a particulate fluid, ie a suspension. After the processing operation, with the concentrates extracted, what is left behind generally is a wet material in suspension form, which may or may not contain reagents harmful to the environment. The amount of waste generated in any of the mining processes is large, in fact, the mining industry is the largest generator of solid waste in Australia. In order to minimise the waste generated within the industry it has become of interest to handle the particulate fluid wastes, or suspensions, at high concentrations, thus removing water and some of the reagents which may be harmful to the environment. The resultant highly concentrated suspension is a non-Newtonian fluid. Rheology deals with the flow of non-Newtonian fluids; therefore a combination of rheological understanding of high density suspensions, in conjunction with an understanding of the environmental problems being faced by the mining industry, can and has led to improved methods of waste disposal in the industry, ie waste minimisation. This paper describes the progress that has been made in the development of dry disposal technology in the mining and minerals industry in Australia.

The opportunities offered by an increasingly volatile world invite the international consultant or engineering services contractor to broaden attitudes, diversify interests, expand capabilities, retain and develop specialist skills and base judgements upon sound principles and solid experience. The wide-ranging scope of this review reflects such a change but the topics of discussion are not intended to be exhaustive or to detract from many other current developments.The subject of environmental protection, effluent control and pollution prevention is a primary consideration in the application of many mineral processing technologies but is not covered here. There is an array of developments relating to noxious gas emissions and toxic wastes and the paramount importance of this matter justifies comprehensive conferences dedicated solely to the application of suitable measures. This review concentrates therefore on the main stream processing techniques for the primary recovery of values.

Canberra is a planned city in which the natural environment, rather than existing development and land tenure, has until recent times at least, imposed the major constraints to development. Even redevelopment poses fewer problems than for most cities. Geological conditions have, therefore, played a significant role in determining its shape and layout. The Canberra experience has relevance for major new mining and engineering projects. The role of engineering geologists and geophysicists in Canberra's development is described, and the problems arising from the geological environment are illustrated by several case histories. Four aspects are addressed: pre-development urban geology; major engineering projects; resources evaluation, including groundwater; and post-development problem-solving. The Australian Capital Territory lies within the Palaeozoic Lachlan Fold Belt. Within the ACT the belt is composed of folded and faulted metasiltstones, metasandstones and acid volcanics, intruded by a major granitic pluton. Some limestone lenses occur. The region has been part of a land mass since Late Devonian times and landscape evolution has been very complex. Geological features of special geotechnical significance include deep but variable weathering, with slight to moderate weathering along faults to at least 70 metres depth in places, and consequential foundation problems; close jointing; weathered limestone lenses with solution cavities containing clay and water; confined aquifers containing artesian water in scree deposits flanking hills; the presence of pyrite; and poor quality and low volumes of groundwater.

This paper will discuss Fordertechnik dawatering screens and their application in process industries. Fordertechnik screens were designed for the dewatering of deslimed, wet fines materials encountered in the mineral beneficiation, sand and coal processing industries. However, these screens have also been used in such industries as municipal waste treatment, paper pulp, chemicals and the food industries. Fordertechnik screens are of simple design and, as a result, offer low capital and maintenance costs. The design is based on the use of twin counter-rotating vibratory motors which provide high frequency, low amplitude linear movement of the screen deck which is essential for high production requirements. The Wangaloa coal mine closed in 1989, and an attempt to grow Pinus radiata on quartz-rich overburden dumps was not successful. The site is currently being rehabilitated with re-profiling and native plant establishment. Plants are being established in a range of substrates that consist of variably disaggregated Tertiary coal measure sediments derived from the mine sequence. This material has low organic matter content (typically <10 %), originating from coal fines or carbonaceous sediment. Substrate samples were collected during December 2003 from a range of sites varying in age, slope, and parent material. Nutrient analysis includes nitrate, ammonia, total N, total P, available P and readily exchangeable base cations. Total nitrogen and phosphorus are low on areas of recently disturbed, quartz-rich overburden, with total N =1200 mg/kg, and total P =200 mg/kg. Background forested areas have total N ranging between 2800 - 3300 mg/kg and total P of 420 - 500 mg/kg. Quartz-rich overburden sites contain available nitrogen levels of less than 6 mg/kg, while background forested areas are generally >20 mg/kg. The soils and water runoff are generally acid, with pH down to three. Water samples have been collected from both ground and surface resources on a monthly basis since December 2003. The main lake on the site had pH of 4.6 in 1999, and this remained relatively unchanged when 850 tonnes of lime were added in 2002. However, the lake pH changed to 6.4 within a one month period in 2004, and has fluctuated since that time.

Boliden Tara Mines Ltd, located in County Meath Ireland, produce in excess of 2.5 million tonnes per annum of ore from the underground resource located 40 miles north west of Dublin. The zinc-lead ore is mined using long hole open stoping techniques, with ore treated on site. The operation is continually searching for new ways to improve productivities at the mine, and have employed a detailed data acquisition and reporting system on site to provide feedback around performance. One area where both Boliden Tara Mines Ltd and Orica Mining Services believed improvements could be made was in the application of bulk emulsion technology through an Orica supplied but Tara operated Maxipump Delivery System for all production and development blasting at the mine. Both parties committed to the evaluation of this technology at the mine, however the capital cost and technical and economic changes meant the project needed to be diligently investigated and any improvements documented. The first stage of this project was for Orica Mining Services personnel to visit the operation, and conduct a detailed analysis of the operationÆs performance over the past 12 months. The next step in moving forward was then to commission and utilise the customer operated emulsion system at the mine. This was then followed with the collation and analysis of data from the demonstration period to examine and document the benefits of the system. This paper is a summary of the observations made during the site inspection and the data analysed to date, and has been used in determining operational and financial improvements in the comparison between a Maxipump Emulsion Service and the current ANFO loading systems.

Slag cleaning is an important part of the pyrometallurgical operations at the Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter. It is a complex system with many streams of different phases and composition. Some of these streams are very difficult to control and/or monitor. Through the use of a statistical computer package, called Minitab, key relationships affecting the economical operation of the slag cleaning process have been found. Data for the statistical analysis was collected from all possible variables around the appendage.

A technique has been developed for the fast measurement of the liquidus temperature of molten salt systems. The method employs a type K thermocouple embedded within the centre of a copper cylinder. The cylinder is immersed into the molten salt bath and the resultant heating curve is recorded using a PC-based data logging system. Upon immersion of the cylinder into the bath, a layer of salt freezes from the melt onto the surface. When this layer remelts during heating, the shape of the heating curve exhibits a change. The onset of this change can be detected by numerical differentiation of the heating curve, and the temperature at the onset represents an estimate of the liquidus of the melt. This work describes the technique and its application to the measurement of liquidus temperatures of MgC12 - NaCl and BaC12 - NaCl salt mixtures, in addition to a number of solidus temperatures.

This paper presents a metaheuristic solution to the optimisation of open pit long-term production scheduling with a stockpile and geological uncertainty. The optimisation formulation is a two-stage stochastic integer programming (SIP) model that determines the optimal mining sequence that maximises the total discounted cash flow, while penalising for high deviations from production targets. A parallel implementation of Tabu Search is proposed to accelerate the solution of the SIP formulation and take full advantage of multicore computer processing. Different variants of the proposed algorithm are applied to a case study to assess the performance of the parallel approach. The proposed algorithm and variants are benchmarked using linear relaxation of the complete problem to determine robustness and provide a better overview of the related performance. The results show a net improvement over the sequential solution, and the new proposal seems to be promising when working with a large-scale data set.CITATION:Senécal, R and Dimitrakopoulos, R, 2014. Quite apart from economic considerations, the following performance parameters must be considered when selecting an explosive for a particular blasting operation. 1. total energy yield/kg, and more particularly, strain energy/kg and bubble energy/kg of charge 2. charge weight/m of blasthole 3. sensitivity of the charge 4. water resistance of the charge The effective division of an explosive's total energy into strain energy (SE) and bubble energy (BE) is explained as is the influence of each energy component on blast results. Because some rocks require a high strain energy for effective breakage, while others are most satisfactorily fragmented by bubble energy, values of SE and BE are more meaningful than those of total energy. Unfortunately, our extensive knowledge of the effects of certain variables on total energy has not yet been completely supplanted by the influence of these variables on SE and BE values. In Australian coalmines there are a number of coal quality parameters that are measured by analysing samples from boreholes. The data points are used to generate spatial models of these parameters, typically using inverse distance as an interpolation method. Numerous additional boreholes are drilled which have geophysical logs measured downhole but from which no coal quality samples are taken. Full suites of coal quality analyses are expensive and time consuming to drill and sample. If geophysical proxies for coal quality could be used, this would greatly improve the accuracy of the resource estimation without additional cost.This paper examines two of the most important coal quality parameters – ash and volatile matter – and assesses the results of a number of geostatistical interpolation methods. The aim is to improve the accuracy of the interpolated models. Auxiliary variables from geophysical logs are also trialled to improve the estimation.A multivariate analysis of ash, volatile matter and several auxiliary variables of a selected coal seam was undertaken in a spatial context, using variography. This was used to construct a model of co-regionalisation that relates all of the variables as manifestations of an underlying geological theme.The traditional inverse distance interpolation approach was compared to ordinary kriging, universal kriging, co-kriging, regression kriging and kriging with external drift approaches. The relative merits of the six interpolation methods were compared by removing all points, one at a time and estimating at the thus known location. The mean error and the root mean square error were evaluated as a measure of bias and precision.This paper demonstrates that there is significant opportunity to improve the estimations of coal quality when using kriging with external drift. For example, the results show that when using the depth of a sample as an external drift variable there is a significant improvement in the accuracy of estimation for volatile matter. Furthermore, when using borehole wireline density logs as an auxiliary variable for ash content, there is improvement in the estimation of the in situ ash. The underpinning reasons for this are discussed in the context of the underlying geology and the physical properties of the coal.
