Under design philosophy, the Hilton concentrator produced lead, zinc and LGM (lead plus zinc) concentrates. The LGM (Iow grade middling) concentrate was produced by combining coarse middling streams from the lead and zinc circuits, regrinding and subsequent flotation. Mineralogical examination of the zinc circuit middling stream prior to regrinding suggested that production of zinc concentrate from the zinc circuit middling stream should be possible by rearranging existing plant equipment. Laboratory testing of samples of plant products, however, showed that regrinding combined wi th the usual reagent suite was nO1 sufficient to produce a zinc concentrate of the required specifications.Examination of the process water highlighted a problem with dissolved salts in the circuit water, which was solved by in-circuit precipitation of the dissolved ions with soda ash. Implementation of the procedure in the concentrator effectively transferred to the zinc concentrate all sphalerite previously recovered to the LGM concentrate.

The settlement and drainage behaviour of co-mix, or mixtures of waste rock and tailings, are examined in a column study. Three co-mix profiles were observed for settlement, drainage, and pore water pressure response. A fourth profile with waste rock and no tailings was also observed for settlement. Co-mix consolidated faster than predictions for tailings alone, and maintained a saturated void space relative to waste rock alone. Practical benefits of co-mix as a waste disposal technology may include faster time to consolidation than tailings, a reduction in total settlement of placed material compared to tailings alone, and a reduction in acid drainage by limiting the flow of water and oxygen through maintenance of a saturated void space.

Bauxite residue or ‘red mud’ is a by-product of the Bayer Process, the primary process of alumina refining. Due to its high alkalinity and variable composition, its storage and disposal poses high environmental risks to water sources, surrounding ecosystems and human health. The high alkalinity (pH 12–13) is a significant factor in its classification as hazardous waste; to mitigate this, Australian refineries have integrated neutralisation processes into bauxite refining. Both sea water and carbon dioxide neutralisation processes are applicable. Multiple studies have demonstrated pH reduction from 12–13 to 7–10, depending on the method. The key advantages of CO2 neutralisation are that it allows for carbon sequestration and is more effective when utilised as a pre-treatment for recovery of metals, while sea water neutralisation is more established and has been integrated into two Australian refineries. This paper proposes the application of the bacteria Exiguobacterium oxidotolerans for bioleaching of iron from hematite in bauxite residue. The genus Exiguobacterium is characterised by its high levels of adaptability, halotolerance and alkaliphilic nature. E. oxidotolerans is successful at eluting Fe2+ from hematite via reductive dissolution, which complexes with oxalic acid produced during metabolism. This aquatic bacterium presents a novel process pathway for iron elution due to direct interaction of E. oxidotolerans with hematite via the cell membrane and operates within the pH range of neutralised red mud. The proposed mechanism is extracellular electron transfer, a microbial metabolic process where electron transfer is facilitated between bacterial cells and extracellular material. Currently this is being investigated for promotion of seaweed growth in coastal environments as soluble iron aids and fortifies colonies. This has potential downstream applications for cleaner iron and steel production. While theoretical, this paper explores the neutralisation, bioleaching and application of the Fe(II)- and Fe(III)-oxalate complexes formed.

This paper seeks to establish an empirical relationship between the impact of mining technological innovation implementation and a company’s market value. The company’s market value is represented by its stock price. In a bid to ascertain the relationship, a stock price prediction model is sought to be established using the firm-specific factors impacted by the implementation of innovative technology. This work is performed under the watch of the prevailing macroeconomic factors. The background anchors in the understanding that the difference between the economic status of a mineral deposit and its uneconomic status lies in the level of mining technological innovation most prevalent at a given time (Hartwick, Olewiler and Preuss, 1986; Wellmer and Scholz, 2017; Wright and Czelusta, 2003). This is derived from productivity improvement, resulting in sustainable profitability due to technological innovation. Unfortunately, there is not an adequately established relationship that links this technological innovation impact to the share price performance of the mineral commodity company.

Gold deposits in Eastern China have characteristic of belted distribution. The concentrating belts of gold mineralization are about parallel to the island are belt in Western Pacific Ocean. Gold deposits are mainly concentrated in the aged metamorphic rock series on the upwarping zones and upwarping fault zones, and obviously controlled by the deep fractures and their deriva-tive secondary faults. Gold mineralization had genetic relation to the Mesozoic (especially Yanshan period) magmatic activity. The distribution and genesis of gold deposits can be explained by the assumption of wavy structure. The formation of wavy structure is related to the process of Pacific plate and India plate.

There are numerous causes of speculative mineral resource and reserve inflation. Traditionally, these are linked to issues of data accuracy or misinterpretation, the use of overly optimistic estimation parameters or assumptions, an absence of independent expert verification, or the simple pressure to increase company value, covert or otherwise. Owing to its subjective nature, classification of resources and reserves remains an opaque process. Of necessity, Competent Persons rely on personal heuristic interpretations, ideally underpinned by appropriate estimation and classification experience across commodity and deposit types. Whereas independent verification of individual resource and reserve statements remains impractical, publicly available data can be interrogated for potential category inflation, particularly when viewed with exploration expenditure statistics included in annual company reports. Abrupt changes in category tonnages and market capitalisation without concomitant expenditure can aid in outlier detection. Consequently, a comparison of common exploration and resource reporting parameters offers a basis for risk assessing classification robustness, over time. In this introductory study, an analysis of globally listed companies was undertaken over a multi-year period, examining base and precious metal projects in both preproduction and operational asset classes. From these, a series of exploratory decision tree trigger points were generated against which target companies were anonymously identified and risk-ranked.

The aim with this paper is to discuss experiences from the ongoing research project ‘Attract: A roadmap to attractive, inclusive, and safe mining workplaces’. The project’s aim is to analyse possibilities, effects, and consequences of the green and digital transformation in the Swedish mining industry from workplace, socio-technical and gender equality perspectives. The research project (2022–2025) at Human Work Science at Luleå University of Technology is financed by the strategic innovation program Swedish Mining Innovation (a joint venture by the national research funds Vinnova, Formas and the Swedish Energy Agency). The project includes a multidisciplinary research group of five senior researchers and five PhDstudents and a broad repertoire of methods, eg literature reviews, qualitative interviews with both managers and workers, workplace observations, workshops, surveys, and project seminars where the researchers and the company representatives together analyse the results. One important part of the project is the applied approach where the researchers work together with two mining companies and one subcontractor company. The project has two parallel main subprojects.

Mining education in Australia has undergone another cyclical downturn over the past five years and several departments have been discontinued while others are still teetering on the brink of destruction. During this downturn Curtin UniversityÆs WA School of Mines (WASM) has managed to stay alive and well, but this has not been by accident. This paper outlines some of the strategies and experiences that have kept WASM in a strong position and offers hope to other departments and schools elsewhere that are still experiencing difficulty. This paper is also directed at all mining departments and schools that are certainly going to see it all happen again after the next mining boom turns to bust.

The current moment experienced by the mineral industry is marked by a series of economic, social and environmental challenges. Among the main challenges, it is important to highlight the decreasing in ore grades with the gradual depletion of the existing deposits, the high volatility in international commodity prices and the operational inefficiencies in the mine, beneficiation, and metallurgical plants. In this context, mining companies are continuously looking for alternatives that minimize production costs and maximize overall production. In addition, recent tragedies involving tailings dam collapses in Brazil, reinforced the need for a more responsible, sustainable, and conscious mining, such as aiming the preservation and rehabilitation of the land environment. In this scenario, the Sensor-Based Sorting (SBS) technology is currently getting more space into the mining market. This separation technology aims the removal of gangue material in coarse particle size fractions, prior to comminution and concentration stages. As a consequence, the technology allows a smaller consumption of energy, water, chemical reagents and other inputs. Moreover, the sensor-based sorting is a dry processing technology and favors the reduction of fine material to be sent to the tailings. The aim of this paper is to provide information regarding the technical and economical evaluation of SBS technology applicability to a zinc silicate mining in Brazil. The project evaluation was performed in two stages: laboratory test work and the execution of a pilot plant. The execution of a pilot plant allowed the technology optimization, quantification of downstream process effects, such as a proper economic evaluation about the technology benefits. Three selected iron ore samples from the major bedded and channel iron deposits of Western Australia were analysed using a scratch test commonly used in the oil and gas industry. The portable commercial equipment dubbed Wombat cuts a groove on the surface of the sample with a cutter under imposed depth of cut and cutting velocity. The normal and tangential components of the force acting on the cutter are recorded with a high degree of precision (about 1N) at fine spatial resolution of about 20 measurements per millimeter.The intrinsic specific energy inferred from the scratch test measurements is found very well correlated with a classical measure of strength such as the uniaxial compressive strength, for over 300 sedimentary rock samples.The results obtained on the iron ore samples are comparable to those obtained on oil and gas sedimentary rocks. This method could provide an objective and semi-automated measurement of material strength and brittleness in iron ores that can possibly be correlated to the lump to fines ratio.

Base metal mineralisation occurs at several locations within the regionally metamorphosed Kanmantoo Group on the southeastern flank of the Mount Lofty Ranges between Kanmantoo and Strathalbyn, 50 km southeast of Adelaide. Sulphide mineralisation is of three main types (Seccombe et al, 1985):1. copper deposits, at the Kanmantoo and Bremer mines, South Hill prospect and several minor occurrences,2. lead-zinc deposits at Aclare, Wheal Ellen, Strathalbyn, St. Ives, Scott's Creek, and Glenalbyn mines,3. pyrite-pyrrhotite mineralisation of the Nairne pyrite deposit and many other pyritic schist units within the Kanmantoo Group.Syntheses of folding, metamorphism and stratigraphy of the Kanmantoo Group were given by Kleeman and Skinner (1958), Offler (1960, 1963), Offler and Fleming (1968), Marlow (1975), Mancktelow (1979) and Parker (1986). Studies of the general relationships of mineralisation to structure in the Kanmantoo area were given by Grasso and McManus (1954), Mirams (1962), Poole (1969), and Lindqvist (1969).Several conflicting views on the origin of mineralisation in the Kanmantoo Group have been proposed. Thomson (1975) considered much of the mineralisation as a late-stage product of regional metamorphism and he, like Parker (1986) and Lambert et al (1987), stressed the importance of major lineaments as an ore control. However, Lindqvist (1969) and Verwoerd and Cleghorn (1975) tentatively suggested a syn-sedimentary origin to the Kanmantoo copper deposit and Jensen and Whittle (1969) and Seccombe et al. (1985) on the basis of sulphur isotope data proposed a bacteriogenic sulphur source and a sedimentary origin for sulphides in the Nairne pyrite deposit. The latter suggested that most copper deposits represent stockwork, vein or disseminated zones within subsurface vents whereas massive mineralisation at Wheal Ellen and Aclare mines probably accumulated on the ocean floor.This paper presents new geological information on the structural and metamorphic setting of the base metal deposits and attemptsto relate this information to previous regional studies of the Kanmantoo Group. Estimates of pressure and temperatureof peak metamorphic conditions based on silicate mineral stabilities are considered in relation to various silicate and sulphidegeothermometers which have not previously been applied to rocks in the Kanmantoo Group.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Sepon district in Lao PDR contains 1.8 Mt of JORC (2012) compliant contained Cu resources in addition to >4.5 Moz of Carlin-like Au in a Palaeozoic sedimentary package. The Cu deposits are proximal to an EW lineament of Permian rhyodacite porphyry (RDP) intrusive centres that are characterised by intense barren quartz stockworks. The Khanong deposit (42 Mt at 3.0 per cent Cu mineral inventory) is a carbonate replacement intermediate sulfidation deposit verging on a high sulfidation environment, where abundant pyrite, copper sulfides (chalcopyrite, bornite, trace enargite), copper sulfosalts (including tennantite – tetrahedrite, colusite), and base metal sulfides (sphalerite and galena) have replaced low dipping dolomite and limestone layers, forming a manto-style orebody fed by steep dipping intensely silica-pyrite altered structures. The Thengkham deposits (54 Mt at 1.5 per cent Cu) are composed of prograde skarns (garnet, clinopyroxene) and mineralised retrograde skarns (chlorite, magnetite, hematite, epidote, sericite, talc, serpentine, carbonates, sulfides) which are irregularly and semi-continuously distributed around an elongate 4 km long intrusive centre. Thengkham and Khanong have been strongly supergene enriched, forming secondary chalcocite breccias and exotic malachite zones.The Carlin-like Au deposits display a range of stratigraphic and structural controls and lie outboard of the Cu deposits. Similar structural controls, alteration assemblages and trace mineralogies suggest that gold and copper mineralisation are temporally and genetically related. Fragmentation variation laws in loading and non-loading areas are obtained by cement block model blasting experiments under various stemming lengths. A reasonable ratio between loading length and stemming length is worked out according to minimum average fragment size. The present continuous loading structure, for its very long length to be stemmed, leads to insufficient fragmentation in the upper part of bench. So a new loading structure with bottom air cushion is put forward. The author analyzes blasting effects and processes of two loading structures' and proves that there exists a optimal length of air cushion.\

The discovery of nickel sulphide deposits at Kambalda in 1966 heralded the development of ò an industry with a capital value of over $1.5 billion producing about 10% of the western world's nickel. ò an unprecedented exploration boom in which over $200 mil- lion was expended in 10 years in the search for nickel deposits. ò a major new class of nickel deposits stimulating exploration for similar deposits overseas. and rapidly propelled a struggling small mining and exploration company to become one of Australia's corporate giants, provid- ing a much-needed stimulus to economic activity in a region suffering from a severe downturn in its principal industry, gold mining. Production of nickel in Western Australia commenced at Kam- balda in 1967 and grew rapidly to a rate of over 30,000 t of con- tained nickel per annum in 1970, 40,000 t in 1973 and 50,000 t in 1975. Early production was aided by a shortage of nickel on the world market due to disruption of supply from the major Canadian producers, resulting in high free market prices for the metal. Since these early years, the industry has experienced a number of cycles of indifferent health due principally to market developments overseas, although the level of production of nickel in Western Australia remained fairly consistent. The two most serious of these, in 1977-8 and 1985-6, forced the closure of a number of mines. Current nickel prices are allowing remaining producers to enjoy a measure of relative prosperity, although there is little general speculation that this will be long-lived. Nickel deposits discovered in the exploration boom were almost exclusively related to ultramafic rocks. Volcanic peridotite (komatiite)-associated deposits, exemplified by the Kambalda ore- bodies, were the targets of initial exploration which was concen- trated on ultramafic sequences near lower stratigraphic contacts with underlying mafic rocks. Subsequently, discoveries made in coarse-grained dunites in interpreted intrusive settings broadened the search parameters.

Hematite represents the vast majority of iron ore exported from Australia as the development and processing cost of magnetite is generally seen as a barrier to the development of vast magnetite resources. However, a number of magnetite projects have attracted a significant amount of interest and investment from large Chinese steelmakers.This paper compares the relative merits of the development of Australian magnetite and hematite ore from the point of view of the steelmaker, taking into account the factors that influence the capital costs of the development of the ore types and the relative costs of operating the process plants to treat these ores. By modelling the relative operating cost for the production of hot rolled coil in China for the two ore categories, the paper demonstrates the economic drivers behind the Chinese steelmakers’ large investments in the magnetite resources of Western Australia. It does this by estimating the potential value of magnetite concentrate to the steelmaker in the event that the maximum potential is realised by operating the blast furnace with a 100 per cent pellet burden.Under the conditions described, it was found that direct reduction (DR)-grade magnetite concentrate could command a price premium over 62 per cent Fe fines of up to 46 per cent (December 2014 on a cost and freight (CFR) basis). The corresponding premium for blast furnace (BF)-grade magnetite concentrate is 17 per cent, which demonstrates the dependency on grade.The capital expenses for a 14 Mt/a concentrate plant is estimated at US$3.1 B for BF-grade magnetite and US$3.35 B for DR-grade, with operating expenses at US$45 and US$50 respectively. The corresponding free on board price for a break-even net present value is calculated at US$82/t for BF-grade magnetite and US$90/t for DR-grade. The minimum long-term iron ore price (62 per cent Fe) that would be required to underpin such a project is estimated at US$78/t CFR for BF-grade magnetite and US$68/t CFR for DR-grade concentrate.Apart from the financial benefits, it is demonstrated that the use of magnetite concentrate in ironmaking has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 400 kg per tonne of hot rolled coil.CITATION:Mouton, A J J and Edwards, K, 2015. "Mines around the world are inherently and operationally diverse. Current methodologies for the design of mine ventilation and cooling infrastructure involve controlling major safety and health hazards. Globally, it can be estimated that mine ventilation systems from various commoditiescirculate over 150 000 m3/s of exhaust air through shafts. Additionally, over 2 000 000 workersare transported every day through shafts in labour-intensive mining countries like China, India,Southern Africa, and the Americas. A key objective of this paper is to share experiences and provide a case for the revision of ætime-honouredÆ ventilation design parameters based on a benchmarking exercise on design exhaust shaft velocity from various global operations (gold, diamond, platinum, coal and base metals). An active fi eld observation on exhaust shaft velocity has indicated that, regardless of the commodity or continent where the mine operates, almost all life-of-mine (LOM) design parameters provided are in the same range of 20 m/s to 22 m/s, which is not convincing considering signifi cant variations exist in shaft depths, geography, commodity, operating and capital costs. From a due diligence perspective, there are no documented views that are available on the most widely used design exhaust air velocity. Based on the global exhaust shaft velocity data, it is noted that a significant portion of shaft velocities are outside the current design velocity of 20 m/s (some operating up to 30 m/s) and other signifi cant portions of the exhaust shafts operate in the critical velocity range. In the case of Australian coal mines, limited data suggests that none of the mines have ever reached the LOM design exhaust shaft velocity. It is self-evident that when the shafts are not operating at their design quantities either the mine system resistance is low or the ventilation and main fan is operating ineffi ciently. The most common reasons given for not reviewing the shaft system were, ætime-honouredÆ design parameter are being used and cannot be changed, mine fan pressure limits, possible fan blade damage, possible spontaneous combustion risks, leakage or simply did not consider such a possibility. In conclusion, the study has reiterated the historic lessons that a safe and expensive airway should not be utilised uneconomically by circulating too litt le air through it."

Titaniferous magnetite deposits are a significant source of vanadium for use in high strength steel alloying and other chemical applications. The mineralogy of the deposits varies markedly and the ore characteristics strongly influence the process route selected and the metallurgical outcomes. Characterisation of the ores reveals the presence of magnetite, ilmenite and other minerals such as spinel hematite and goethite with variable degrees of weathering along with weathered products of host rock. The standard processing route is to crush, grind and magnetically recover a concentrate for salt roasting to produce a soluble vanadate. Ore beneficiation is practised to generate an iron based mineral concentrate containing much of the vanadium with low silica levels of two per cent. Typical processing problems encountered are fine liberation size, over grinding of the magnetite and variable response to magnetic separation resulting from the weathering profile. Beneficiation options are restricted, and generally focused on producing a combined iron and titanium rich concentrate containing vanadium due to the fact that ilmenite and magnetite and their products of weathering are magnetic and have similar specific gravities making their separation difficult. The ilmenite usually contains low levels of vanadium making its separation highly desirable from the iron mineralisation containing higher levels of vanadium. Salt roasting of vanadium ores followed by water leaching has been the standard processing route for many years. The cost of suitable sodium salts, availability of capital and increasing energy costs and energy availability are critical factors in determining the viability of aspiring vanadium producers. To date, only Windimurra has acquired full capital funding, secured energy and sodium salt supplies at suitable cost that enable the construction of the project. Low overall recoveries of vanadium to concentrate roasting at up to 1200¦C are critical cost issues. In this paper, factors influencing the recovery of vanadium are reviewed and emerging processing trends explored. The important features of the processing of titaniferous magnetites have been condensed from the literature, published works, company websites, our own work and personal communication.

The continued exploration of the major brown coal deposits of the Latrobe Valley has resulted not only in the discovery of huge additional reserves, but also in new concepts of the stratigraphy and structure of the coal seams in that area. The author sets out his interpretation of the new information which has become available over the last six years.A section of the paper is devoted to the quality of the coal. As the chemical composition of these brown coals has been discussed in some detail by previous authors, only the major constituents and the heat value of the coal are dealt with in this paper. Some of the variations in quality are related to the geological structure.The occurrence of underground water and its relation to open cuts is dealt with briefly.INTRODUCTIONThe Latrobe Valley Tertiary Basin is almost entirely covered by a layer of Post Tertiary sediments which mask the underlying rocks and their structures. As a result, the geological understanding of this area has had to await the comprehensive drilling campaign in search of brown coal, initiated by the Victorian Mines Department in 1917, and subsequently carried on by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria. The first detailed geology was published by Herman (1922), and this was followed some 25 years later by papers by Edwards, and later Thomas and Baragwanath, to which reference will be made later in this paper. Herman included a section on the geology of the Latrobe Valley in his book Brown Coal, which was published in 1952.Since that time a considerable amount of new information has become available from the continued drilling carried out by the Commission. In addition, geophysical work carried out by the Commonwealth Bureau of Mineral Resources has assisted in the defining of geological structures in the area.
