The Hidden Valley process plant has recently undertaken a program to relieve process flow bottlenecks and improve process automation. An environment of cost reduction and restrained capital necessitated solutions that primarily utilised existing equipment and internal resources. Removing bottlenecks relieved pressure from a strained circuit that was unable to maintain consistent performance. Improved process automation firstly stabilised the process, then allowed the circuit to sustainably operate at the expanded capacity limits. These allowed implementation of an operating approach that focused process operators towards identifying and resolving process disturbances in advance. Most aspects of process design are best addressed via bench scale or pilot plant scale test work. However, as experience is gained, fundamental or indicative data can provide more than adequate information to manage the risk associated with some process aspects of concentrator design.Historical precedence exists where minimal design test work has resulted in successful projects. On many occasions benchmarking, sometimes supported by fundamental data such as mineralogy, has been used to successfully develop effective process plant outcomes. Of course, this style of approach is most common with æfast trackÆ projects and often comes with the usual surprises that result from inadequate geometallurgy to define the project cash flow.This paper explores the risks and opportunities associated with the various facets of process development and design for a base metals concentrator. The Dinkidi Cu-Au porphyry deposit is situated in the Caraballo Range of North Luzon, Philippines. Although comparatively small, Dinkidi has unusually high gold grades with drilling by Climax-Arimco Mining Corporation delineating a 110 Mt orebody at 1.2 g/t gold and 0.5 per cent copper. The magmatic-hydrothermal evolution of Dinkidi records a distinctive switch in mineralisation from an early orthoclase-dominated Au-rich assemblage, typical of alkaline porphyry systems, to a later quartz stockwork Au-Cu rich assemblage typical of most calc-alkaline to shoshonitic porphyry systems. The early orthoclase-dominated stage is associated with the intrusion and crystallisation of a variably-textured clinopyroxene-syenite dyke that contains high-grade (5 - 20 g/t) gold mineralisation. We consider this dyke to be a Cu-Au porphyry analogue to the pegmatites found in granitic systems. Dinkidi is hosted within the Early Miocene Didipio Igneous Complex. This alkaline igneous complex is comprised of early unmineralised gabbros (pyroxene-plagioclase cumulates), clinopyroxenites (pyroxene cummulates), diorites and monzodiorites that have been intruded by a large, weakly mineralised monzonite pluton. The Dinkidi deposit is located at the southern margin of the monzonite pluton. Mineralisation is hosted within a composite monzonite stock. Within the stock, an 800 metres by ~200 metres (plan section) elongate monzonite stock (Tunja Monzonite) predates and hosts the bulk of the Au-Cu mineralisation. This has been intruded by the thin (10 to 30 m wide), highly mineralised variably-textured magnetite- and clinopyroxene- phyric syenite pegmatite (the Balut Dyke). The youngest phases of the composite stock are leucocratic quartz-monzonite porphyry (Quan Porphyry) that grades texturally, in its core, into a post-mineralisation crystal-crowded quartz-syenite (Bufu Felsite). The late-stage Bufu Felsite is inferred to be the source of much of the Cu-Au mineralisation. The Didipio Igneous Complex has intruded a sequence of Late Oligocene alkaline andesitic lavas and volcaniclastics and overlying potassic dacitic lavas. Whole rock geochemical analyses indicate that the intrusions and the potassic dacite lavas in the surrounding region are co-magmatic. Five main stages of hydrothermal activity are recorded at Dinkidi. An unmineralised K-silicate (biotite-magnetite) alteration assemblage formed during the intrusion of the Tunja Monzonite stock. The diorites surrounding the stock display intense selectively pervasive biotite and magnetite alteration and are cut by an extensive network of orthoclase veins and monzonite dykes. The orthoclase-dominated assemblages of Stage Two carry substantial high-grade Au mineralisation and are associated with the intrusion of the Balut Dyke. The emplacement of this unusual dyke is associated with emplacement of pegmatitic clinopyroxene-orthoclase-magnetite¦sulphide dykes, localised orthoclase flooding along the margins of the dyke, and subsequent emplacement of an extensive orthoclase-actinolite-bornite¦chalcopyrite-fluorite stock-work, and development of widespread selectively pervasive actinolite alteration. The main stage of Au-Cu mineralisation at Dinkidi is intimately associated with the intrusion and initial crystallisation of the leuco-monzonite porphyry (Quan Porphyry) and emplacement of a quartz stockwork followed by carbonate-sulphide deposition and intense vein-related sericite and carbonate alteration assemblages. The quartz stockwork formed synchronous with the deposition of the æBugoy QuartzoliteÆ, a very coarse grained mosaic of quartz-orthoclase-perthite along the walls and top of the crystallising intrusion. Stage 3 was terminated by crystallisation of the distinctively vuggy Bufu quartz-syenite phase in the core of the intrusive, with associated antiperthite veins, and the subsequent explosive brecciation of the roof of the intrusion, forming a quartz-fragment breccia from the Bugoy Quartzolite. Retrograde metasomatism during Stage Four was intimately associated with the emplacement of extensive, late-stage carbonate, silica and zeolite veins and widespread selectively pervasive carbonate alteration. The last hydrothermal stage at Dinkidi, Stage 5, is comprised of strong selectively pervasive clay alteration and is associated with fault-related brecciation of the Dinkidi stock.

Pre-concentration of low grade ores can improve the economic and environmental sustainability of an operation significantly, with opportunities for implementation ranging from run-of-mine to mill discharge depending on ore specific characteristics. For a gravity separation, where the performance is fundamentally constrained by mineral liberation, these feeds often represent a very difficult separation given the dominance of the relatively coarse gangue and fine liberation sizes. Thus, building knowledge of the feed through characterisation of the density distribution is critical to assessing amenability before progressing towards lab/pilot-scale test work and full-scale operation. The traditional approach to determining the density distribution typically involved sink/float testing, however, recent developments in hydrodynamic fractionation using inclined channels now offers a more cost-effective alternative with minimal health and environmental risk. A non-hazardous dense liquid, namely an aqueous solution of lithium heteropolytungstates (LST), is supplied as fluidisation to a REFLUXTM Classifier, consisting of a vertical section below a system of inclined channels, operating in semi-batch configuration. Fractionation is achieved by increasing the flow rate incrementally and collecting the particles to form a series of flow fractions. The purpose of this paper is to present this new method in the form of a case study, aimed at assessing the amenability of a low grade gold-bearing sulfide ore to pre-concentration. The robustness in the method is demonstrated through comparison with sink/float data, examining the density distribution and the liberation-limited product grade and recovery achievable. These data are then used as a benchmark to assess water-based continuous gravity separations conducted on the feed using a laboratory-scale REFLUXTM Classifier. This data set is used as the basis for process modelling and empirical validation for the recently established partition surface of the separator.

La Colosa, Colombia is a large gold-porphyry deposit currently undergoing feasibility studies by AngloGold Ashanti. This period of development allows the opportunity to apply innovative and emerging testing and modelling methods to provide a predictive geometallurgical recovery model for the deposit. By partnering with the AMIRA P843A Geometallurgical Mapping and Mine Modelling (GeMIII) research project, the geological and mineralogical data are analysed with respect to liberation and recovery methods. This will allow the variability in the geology and mineralogy of the deposit and key relationships recognised in the data to be included in the development of a model to help predict recoveries of the gold. Many aspects of the gold mineralisation such as gold paragenesis, associations, grain size and texture are determined and analysed using optical microscopy, Mineral Liberation Analysis (MLA), and laser ablation (LA-ICP-MS). At La Colosa the gold has been located in sulfides (eg pyrite, pyrrhotite, and chalcopyrite), silicates, along silicate phase boundaries, and among the pyrite-rich intermediate argillic alteration. Further testing and analysis will also determine if ‘invisible’ gold is present in the pyrite, pyrrhotite, and chalcopyrite. Recovery methods can also be determined and tested after combining the results of mineralogy tests with other data (eg results of comminution tests). Indices for the mineralisation and recovery are developed using image analysis and analytical testing. These indices are correlated with recovery data from the company to develop a predictive block model for recovery. The goal is to develop cost-effective, efficient methods to analyse the mineralogy and geology of the deposit; understand the variability in the mineralogy, geology, and recovery; and construct a predictive geometallurgical recovery model.

"This paper is focused on blasting activities undertaken as part of the Pacific Highway Upgrade – Tintenbar to Ewingsdale – project (T2E). This is a ‘priority 1’ Pacific Highway road construction project in New South Wales (NSW), to be completed by mid-2015 (weather permitting). T2E will provide approximately 17 km of dual carriageway road starting at the northern end of the Ballina bypass and extending to the Ewingsdale interchange, and will complete the existing dual carriageway road between Ballina and the NSW/Queensland border.Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) (formerly the Roads and Traffic Authority) is delivering the project on behalf of the NSW state and federal governments. In October 2011, RMS awarded a contract to Baulderstone Pty Ltd (now Lend Lease Engineering Pty Ltd – Lend Lease) to design and construct T2E. One of the key elements in this project is the St Helena Tunnel.In order to avoid the steep grades of St Helena Hill, eliminate a well-known accident black spot and maintain the aesthetics of the Byron hinterland escarpment, RMS and Lend Lease prepared designs to construct a 434 m long dual carriageway tunnel, 46 m below the ridge line of St Helena Hill. Lend Lease elected, where geotechnical conditions permitted, to use drill and blast methods to excavate the full tunnel profile, instead of traditional mechanical excavation techniques.Since all blasting locations (both inside and outside the tunnel) were in close proximity to nearby residents, the NSW Department of Planning and Infrastructure imposed strict air blast overpressure (airblast), ground vibration (vibration) limits and limited working hours. Both RMS and Lend Lease recognised that these restrictions meant that nearby residents may be exposed to blasting activities for longer than was necessary. As a result, after close consultation and agreement with the nearby residents, RMS applied successfully to the NSW Department of Planning to increase the airblast and vibration limits, as well as the working hours.Working under these new conditions, Lend Lease employed a range of best practice drill and blast technologies provided by both Orica Australia Pty Ltd and Atlas Copco Mining and Rock Excavation to improve the safety and efficiency of blasting activities and to minimise the potential negative impacts of the blasting works on affected residents. These technologies included: the use of a continuous environmental monitoring system to record the results of the blast events and provide quick and easy reporting to key stakeholders to address RMS specification requirements electronic detonators to enable accurate hole detonation timing for vibration compliance and to give project engineers the flexibility and precision to alter each design to suit the geological profile of each face the use of two software programs and advanced drill rigs to enable the efficient design of blasts, electronic transfer of designs to the drill rigs, as well as in-hole monitoring and recording of drilling performance the use of a specialised bulk emulsion system to deliver fully coupled bulk explosives into face blastholes to maximise fragmentation, and decoupled bulk explosives into perimeter blastholes, to reduce overbreak and deliver a cleaner profile.By taking a progressive approach towards the environmental restrictions and the work hours imposed, as well as utilising best practice blasting techniques, RMS and Lend Lease were able to blast with confidence and achieve their production deadlines and reduce the total cost of the project.Most importantly, RMS and Lend Lease were able to meet their environmental obligations and work constructively with the nearby residents to ensure that the blasting was undertaken as safely and efficiently as possible without delay or negative impact.CITATION:Dowling, M, Domotor, R and Miller, D, 2014. The United States (US) coal mining industry has been working under comprehensive planning, operating and rehabilitation regulatory requirements for nearly 35 years. The public desire for environmental protection during mining and rehabilitation following mining to achieve post-mining land use and sustainability goals has been a major factor and continues to influence the process. Mining companies have evolved operations to achieve outcomes that address the desired goals and regulatory requirements cost-effectively and successfully. Over the 35 year regulatory period, requirements for more diverse topography, specialised revegetation communities, landform stability and assured sustainability have increased and become more complex. These challenges are effectively met by maximising integration of mine planning and operating with the rehabilitation process. Rehabilitation is then implemented in a more timely and efficient manner and with effective results that achieve desired outcomes, commonly with added value. Peabody Energy (Peabody) has taken this approach in its US operations and this paper discusses an integrated approach and illustrates learnings and results with examples from several of its western US operations.CITATION:Pfannenstiel, V, 2012. The Acid Drainage Technology Initiative (ADTI) was initiated in 1995 by federal agencies, the National Mining Association (NMA) and the Interstate Mining Compact Commission (IMCC) to identify, evaluate and develop cost-effective and practical acid drainage technologies. In 1999, ADTI was expanded through the addition of the metal mining sector, which is focused on drainage quality issues related to metal mines. ADTI addresses drainage quality issues from abandoned, active, and future coal and metal mines. The guiding principle of ADTI is to build consensus among industry, federal and state regulatory agencies on acid drainage technology development and technology transfer issues. ADTI is focusing its efforts on mine drainage prediction, sampling/monitoring, modelling and avoidance/remediation. ADTI is not a regulatory or policy development program. ADTI includes the Coal Mining Sector (CMS) and the Metal Mining Sector (MMS) under the overall guidance of the ADTI Operations Committee. The Operations Committee consists of representatives from industry, state and federal government and academia. The Coal Mining Sector includes two committees; a prediction committee and an avoidance and remediation committee. The Metal Mining Sector includes steering committee and work groups on prediction, sampling and monitoring, modelling, mitigation, and pit lakes. The Coal Mining Sector has produced two publications on the prediction and prevention of acid drainage. The Metal Mining Sector has workbooks under preparation covering the work group topics. This past winter, the Metal Mining Sector, working with the US Bureau of Land Management, presented a satellite training session on acid drainage. ADTI has evolved in response to changing needs and technologies as evidenced by the addition of the Metal Mining Sector in 1999. The Operations Committee and the members of the Coal and Metal Mining Sectors will guide future direction in response to identified issues.

At times of high metal prices, mining projects that have previously been put into the ætoo hard basketÆ are now being more closely examined. Typically these projects include the potential recovery of small mineable tonnes with high contained metal values and often with poor ground conditions. For many underground mining projects, the drift and fill method is viewed as a high-cost method and a æmethod of last resortÆ. As a result the method is not well known in Australia and it is the authorsÆ view that the method is under utilised. The drift and fill method can be applied to a variety of underground mining situations and is a preferred method for some orebody geometries and where ore recovery is viewed as a key to project success. This paper examines some of the critical mine planning and backfill issues involved with the drift and fill mining method.

"It has been recognised that the presence of clay minerals in ores adversely affect flotation performance. In this study, changes in rheological properties of the flotation pulps under normal operating conditions were studied with additions of bentonite and kaolinite clays at various concentrations. Zeta potential measurements were also carried out to determine the changes in surface charge due to adsorption of clay particles. The results showed that bentonite clay adversely affects floatability of pyrite while kaolinite clay had a lesser influence on flotation of pyrite. The addition of Ca2+ ions to the pulp containing bentonite modified the rheological characteristics and in turn improved the pyrite flotation. It was also observed Ca2+ ions suppressed the swelling properties of bentonite and altered surface charge properties of bentonite clay particles. This work presents design features of an innovative in-line mixing helical (coiled) reactor for flocculation and flotation as a solid-liquid separation process for suspended particles (including liquid droplets). The device has been named flocs generator reactor (FGR), a compact system whereby the flocculation of particles is assisted by the kinetic energy transfer from the hydraulic flow through the reactor and/or by the injection of microbubbles (30 - 70 ¦m). The flow mixing presented a plug flow regime with a low dispersion degree, promoting the required hydrodynamic conditions to disperse the polymer flocculant (cationic polyacrylamide) and to generate æstrongÆ flocs of Fe(OH)3 or clays (as colloidal model systems) with aggregation using an anionic polymer, Al2(SO4)3 and poly aluminium chloride (PAC), and oil emulsions destabilisation with a high molecular weight cationic polymer. The solid-liquid separation of the flocs was then achieved either by settling or by flotation with microbubbles. This paper discusses advances in this new in-line flocculation-rapid flotation device to remove æaerated aggregatesÆ, aggregates with entrained and entrapped bubbles. Studies were carried out with different models of FGRs (varying the length:volume ratio) and process efficiency (mainly kinetics) evaluated as a function of polymer concentration and some operating parameters, namely, feed flow-rate, air:solids ratio and residence time. Results showed that the aerated flocs are readily floated with rising rates in the order of 120 mh-1, values higher than those obtained for the settling of the non-aerated flocs (18 - 24 mh-1). The FGR requires short residence times and generates dense, well structured flocs (with a mass fractal dimension, dF of about three) which withstand high shear forces. Mechanisms involved appear to include small bubble formation and their rapid occlusion (entrapment) within flocs, nucleation of bubbles at floc/water interfaces, polymer coiling as a result of æsalting outÆ effects at the aqueous/air interface and plug flow type of mixing (flocculation). Successful examples of emulsified oil and solids removal from water are shown and because in all cases high efficiencies were obtained (>90 per cent removal). Due to the high process efficiency and high loading capacity shown, the FGR appears to have good potential as an in-line flotation-separator device in applications requiring high rate solid-liquid or liquid-liquid separations.

Mining of the Martha Hill epithermal gold deposit via open pit methods will excavate a pit to 15 m below sea level. Regular geotechnical evaluations of pit slopes have taken place. Details of the various components of these evaluations, including geological structure, material strength, and groundwater, are covered. Pitwall geological structures are represented clearly on pit floor grade control maps with the dominant sets being steeply dipping strike fractures. Cross cutting shears are common. Material strength is reflected by the oxidation status of the hydrothermally altered host rocks, with weaker material occurring in partially oxidised ground. Regional groundwater is generally high, particularly on the north-eastern side of the pit, where it has been little affected by de-watering. Geological structures appear to control the flow of groundwater in the proximity of pitwalls and require draining by the introduction of horizontal drains. An overview of pit slope design is given. Slopes are designed for overall slope stability, allowing for the occurrence of minor interbench failures.

HISTORIC SIGNIFICANCE OF EXPLOSIVES TO MINERAL PRODUCTION The ancient method of breaking rock was to build a wood fire against the face, heat the rock through and then pour water on the heated ore-bearing rock to cause it to break by tension. It was too slow and costly as the forests around the mines were cleared and transport of wood became difficult. Black powder had been used for 300 years as a gun propel- lant. ('Black' after Berthold Schwartz, a German monk, Figure 1, and the inventor of the gun who was given the epitaph `Here lies Berthold the Black, the most abominable of inhumans who by his invention has brought misery to the rest of humanity'). Only at the beginning of the 17th Century, black powder was introduced for loosening rock in European mines. In 1802 Dupont started black powder manufacture on the Brandywine Creek. The ignition train of powder was enclosed in goose quills, straws, rushes, paper or wooden tubes. The time interval between igni- tion and blast was pure speculation.

"An effective geotechnical design provides an accurate and appropriate assessment, balanced with a mining company’s risk profile. Justifying the cost of slope assessment requires an understanding of the input sensitivities, and resultant risk, to achieve a slope of a required functionality. As a project progresses from Scoping to Feasibility, the geotechnical risk becomes better resolved through increased expenditure on drilling, testing, analysis and modelling as long as the input data is appropriately spatially distributed. Providing accurate and appropriate geotechnical assessments in the early stages provides confidence in all following stages, especially where initial analysis indicates difficult geotechnical conditions. It is also in the early stages of project definition that there is most opportunity to maximise the value of the deposit through investigations into optimal mining methods.This paper examines the advantages of geotechnical engineering input through a project study period. Early geotechnical involvement allows the Scoping and Pre-Feasibility Studies to be more effective. Operational risks can then be better understood and dealt within the Feasibility Study phase, also ensuring that the correct risks and management controls are put in place.With commodity price pressure and cost of resource recovery in a downturned industry, reducing the risk to cash flow, resource recovery and safety should be a primary goal for all mining companies. McArthur River Mine, in the Gulf Country of the Northern Territory, exploits one of worldÆs largest deposits of zinc, lead and silver. It was officially opened in September 1995, 40 years after its discovery in 1955. This paper describes the geological, engineering and metallurgical assessments which made up the feasibility study. It then relates how these study components compare with the first two years of operation. The challenges that had to be overcome before the McArthur River Mine became economically viable included the metallurgical problems associated with extremely fine grained ore and the development of an effective mining process.

Ventilation control devices (VCD’s) and bulkheads are critical controls used for managing risk in underground coalmines. Following the Moura No. 2 mine explosion in 1994, the Queensland Mines Department required that the design of VCDs be based on live testing (such as in a mine testing explosion gallery) and more recently on numerical modelling using measured seal material properties. While the stipulated methods represent an idealistic solution, they are not practical to implement as solutions to daily challenges presented in underground coalmines.Not all VCD’s and bulkheads are placed in areas which have been mined to standard roadway dimensions. Operationally, VCD’s may be required to be placed close to intersections or require large dimensionally different areas (eg overcasts and pre-driven recovery road shutters) compared to the live testing or numerical modelling originally undertaken.This paper describes the various structural engineering methods utilised to account for the design of VCD’s where the operational requirements are non-standard. Siting and construction of VCD’s near the entry of cut throughs and geological structures requires additional design considerations. While VCDs constructed from a single material (eg sprayed mining plaster) are relatively straightforward to design, the addition of multiple openings (doors) or large pipes will complicate the structuralanalysis significantly.Temporary bulkheads used for the containment of grout such as for the construction of pre-driven recovery roads in coal mining have a significantly different risk profile to VCDs and should be designed accordingly. Recent failures and near-misses in such bulkheads have highlighted this issuefor the authors.The existence of an Australian Standard for Underground Mine VCDs and Bulkheads would go a long way to addressing many of the issues raised in this paper. Without a single, industry-accepted reference for VCD design, individual mines will have to continueto exercise their best judgements using whatever local expertise is available to them.

Time Usage Models, used as a basis for calculating performance indicators for mobile mining equipment, have developed from very simple to very sophisticated models. This development has paralleled the increased collection and analysis of production data that itself has been enabled by the evolution of underground voice and data communications along with the relevant information systems. A Time Usage Model divides the hours that equipment is (or is not) used into standard components, by a hierarchical breakdown, so that measures of productivity can be used to compare performance of both people and equipment. The calculation of equipment availability, and thus the underlying Time Usage Model, has always been an extremely emotive topic as different groups use time usage information for different purposes. The direct link between measuring performance Key Performance Indicators (KPI) calculated from these models and employee rewards impacts upon the workforce. This paper discusses the conflict in use by various stakeholders and proposes ways to address some of the more contentious issues each supported by case studies. The simple status code functionality used by early systems has proven inadequate, leading to the evolution of “work-arounds”. These workarounds have become the norm and unfortunately have become embedded in the next generation of models and the information systems that incorporate them. This paper contends that the industry should stop building Time Usage Models to accommodate shortcomings in proprietary systems, but rather collaborate with suppliers to develop innovative methods to deal with the fundamental requirements. There are many points of differentiation that are not clear-cut. Pitfalls are discussed as well as threats to success. A framework of rules is developed as guidelines for how a Time Usage Model should be developed and applied. This will hopefully stimulate the on-going discussion as to how Equipment Availability and other components of the model should be calculated.

Diamonds occur in N.S.W., Victoria and north west Tasmania. Diamonds from different areas appear to have their own characteristics, lending weight to the suggestion that three or four different sources (different in location and age) have produced the diamonds found in alluvials at quite a number of locations in Eastern Australia. Explorers for kimberlites in Victoria must overcome a number of field difficulties. The writer's approach attempted to find exploration targets by literature search, noting unusual garnet occurrences, and by relating records of diamond occurrences to described mining activity. While the records are biased towards gold, the study did lead to a pipe, located well away from known diamond-bearing alluvials. Core from one test hole has shown this intrusive to include an alkaline ultramafic breccia with many kimberlitic affinities - a breccia containing mantle-derived minerals, but not a true kimberlite. (A detailed rock description is appended to this paper, but is not the purpose of the paper.) This result enhances the possibility that kimberlites may occur in Victoria, on or near large scale faults or grabens. The depth of fracture penetration may have been different
