Resolution Copper Mining LLC (RCML) is one of the largest undeveloped high-grade porphyry copper-molybdenum deposits in the world, with an orebody at depths of approximately 2000 m beneath post-mineralisation cover. With a vision to develop a large-scale, low-cost operating mine, the project is designed as a micropanel cave with an advanced undercut.In September 2014, RCML began a study focusing on identifying and selecting the best production cases to eventually reach full production (120 kt/d). To achieve this, a methodology was developed that allows the fast evaluation of a large number of production schedules.Dassault Systèmes GEOVIA was commissioned to enhance the Footprint Finder program for batch scheduling panel cave production. The tonnage and grade schedules produced by Footprint Finder were compared to schedules developed using personal computing block caving (PCBC™). The inputs to Footprint Finder were then adjusted to achieve a reasonable correlation with the PCBC™ schedules.The enhanced Footprint Finder program was used to batch-process nearly 54 000 schedules using 20 elevations, 17 shutoff grades, four heights of draw, two different copper grades (modelled and upside), two layout refinements within the existing footprint and a variety of production ramp-up rates to 120 kt/d. The study team developed processes to analyse large amounts of data, to assist in selecting a matrix of the best schedules for detailed assessment using PCBC™. Three hundred PCBC™ schedules were developed.The detailed trade-offs between the scenarios is currently underway with promising results. Cyanide-extractable gold is far more meaningful in the definition of ore, and control of extraction, than fire- assayable or aqua regia digestible gold. The use of cyanide- extractable gold addresses the significant problems of over- as well as under-assaying by fire and aqua regia digests. The problems of conventional control or diagnostic cyanidation extractions: lengthy extraction, and masking by pregrobbing in cyanidation extractions for assay purposes; are surmounted with a novel activator - Leach WELL. Full extraction of liberated gold, insignificantly affected by preg-robbers, can now be achieved within 30 minutes. This can assist in reducing common gold losses presently often hidden by inappropriate mine call factors, and/or high grade cut values. This paper includes a discussion of fundamental mechanisms of cyanidation, preg- and assay-robbing, which underlie the phenomena Involved.

This paper aims to address the issue of the public's image of the extractive minerals industry. What is it about the industry that incites such negative feelings and are they justified? Are we really the 'rapists of the land' that many would have us believe? Has the industry really not improved since the old gold boom days?   I believe that the fundamental cause for the public's view is lack of knowledge and understanding of the industry as a result of the dislocation of the end production from its source. There are few people who look at a house, car, record, toilet, tooth-brush, bottle of coke or pair of glasses and see the mine site that supplied the source material. But the mine site and its products should be inseparably linked. This is one area where we should be educating the public û it is all very well being anti-development but the population as a whole is not really prepared to live without its 'mineral'-derived necessities. It is very easy to say that we do not want minerals development in New Zealand but are we prepared to live with the consequences, ie go without its products? We have a duty as a global citizen to develop our own resources rather than expect Third World nations desperate for overseas investment, often with governments who are not prepared to constrain or control their development, to be exploited. New Zealand is not the only 'beautiful' place in the world and we should be aware of the impact that our demands for resources have on the countries who supply us. We have a duty to be a good global citizen.   So how does the industry improve its public image? The key here has to be to educate. This does not have to be high powered or expensive but can be as simple as getting a few local kids' hands dirty panning, and gaining some firsthand knowledge of the industry. The industry also needs to be more pro-active in the public arena. Yes, the industry has skeletons, but the industry should be publicly displaying them û admit that things have gone wrong but let's do it ourselves and not leave it up to the environmental groups to accuse, point the finger and put the industry under public scrutiny. The industry should also be publicising its successes, inviting the local press, councils, etc to view the latest area rehabilitated. But more than anything else we must tell the public what the minerals industry means to New Zealand. Can they really live without us?

Complete Bouguer and isostatic anomaly maps compiled for Costa Rica provide new insights into the crustal structure and mineralization. Terrain corrections were approximated from the station to a radial distance of 167 km by computer using a 3- minute digital elevation model of Costa Rica and surrounding areas. Isostatic corrections, based on Airy-Heiskanen compensation, were also calculated from 0 to 167 km using the 3- minute elevation model and from 167 km to 180 degrees using combined topographic and isostatic reduction maps. Costa Rica can be divided into four main terranes based on gravity data: a Pacific coastal region, a Pacific inland area, a central region, and a Caribbean coastal region. Negative gravity anomalies along the Pacific coastal margin correlate with an offshore sedimentary basin, and large positive anomalies correlate with mafic and ultramafic igneous rocks on the Santa Elena, Nicoya, and Osa Peninsulas, and at Puerto Quepos. Pacific inland anomalies are separated from the Pacific coastal region by a steep gravity gradient, and over the Coast Ranges a major gravity low overlies a thick section of low- density sedimentary rocks. In the central region, a major gravity low occurs over a thick low-density Quaternary volcanic complex in the Cordillera Central, north of San Jose. A prominent feature of the Caribbean coastal region is an interrupted gravity low over the Limon Basin that reflects a thickening of low-density sedimentary rocks. A conspicuous gravity lineament, trending northeast separates northern and southern Costa Rica. The lineament is defined by the termination of several major gravity anomalies including those over the Coast Ranges, Cordillera Central, Puerto Quepos, and Limon Basin. In addition, the lineament correlates with other geological and geophysical data including: northeast-trending faults, the southern limit of large Quaternary volcanoes, the segmentation of the middle America volcanic belt, and a seismicity gap. This lineament may be the expression of a previously unrecognized major northeast- trending fracture zone in central Costa Rica. An important economic implication of the gravity lineament is a correlation with the termination of gold and porphyry copper deposits in Costa Rica.

In mining, water management is an operational necessity, requiring planning and detailed engineering, as well as risk assessment. Yet, the hydrology of streams and aquifers typically extends well beyond the boundaries of mine operations and intersect with environmental and social values. Mine managers often plan, design and assess the impact of water management activities (such as dewatering, excess water disposal and flood management) with a mine site or process specific focus. The challenge is that the impacts are spatial, long-term and complex – and may be cumulative across multiple mine sites. Further, there is usually little consideration of the feedbacks and interactions between surface water, groundwater and catchment hydrology. Failure to understand these processes can lead to poor decisions and increased costs. Mine planning is the backbone of all mining enterprises and determines the profitability or otherwise of any mining investment. Providing high quality ore and tailings containment at the right time are the main drivers in oil sands mining. Recent environmental and regulatory requirements also makes waste management an integral part of mine planning in the oil sands industry (Directive 074). Due to the limitation of lease area, the pit phase advancement in oil sands mining is carried out simultaneously with the construction of tailings dykes in the mined out areas of the pit. These in-pit dykes are constructed to hold tailings that are produced during the processing of the oil sands ore after an initial external tailings facility. Most of the materials used in constructing these in-pit and ex-pit dykes come from the oil sands mining operation, making it necessary to have a plan for supplying the dyke material. The research problem here is categorised as: determining the order of extraction of ore, dyke material and waste to be removed from a predefined ultimate pit limit over the mine life that maximises the net present value of the operation û a strategic schedule; anddetermining the destination of dyke material that minimises construction cost depending on the construction requirements of the various dykes as per their designs û an operational schedule. There has been developed, implemented and verified a theoretical optimisation framework based on mixed integer goal programming (MIGP) to address the oil sands long-term production scheduling and waste management problem. The research introduced the development of multiple material types and multiple destination optimisation techniques using MIGP in the context of mine planning. This study presents an integration of mixed integer programming and goal programming in solving large-scale mine planning optimisation problems using clustering and pushback techniques.

When dealing with rocks in the geotechnical profession, a common activity involves providing an estimate of the intact strength. The tactile approach and descriptions of strength that apply to soils is well documented, can be readily checked through the use of a pocket penetrometer and are known to provide reliable estimates of strength. Moreover, although different soil strength classification systems are present, the bounds between classification classes are compatible across almost all documented classification systems. However, this is not the case for rock strength materials. There are numerous systems within the literature, some with different concepts, and almost all have different bounds to each strength classification. In this paper, the author presents seven classification systems for estimating intact rock strength and highlights issues in their implementation. Modern gold production from the Gympie Goldfield commenced in 1995 with the first production from the Monkland Mine. The primary ore target was the 2.5 m wide Inglewood Fault ore zone, which was initially mined using traditional narrow-vein shrink stoping. This manuallyintensive mining method allowed the mine to re-open with minimal capital cost, however the trade off was low productivity and high operating costs. As the mine has developed, access through 100-year-old, timber-lined, small shafts, and the high cost of delineating reserves, has restricted modernisation of the operations. In early-2000 a stockwork lode was discovered adjacent to the existing workings with an economic width of 40 m. In order to maximise the benefit of such an orebody, mining needed to be approached in a new way. This paper summarises the many changes implemented at the Monkland Mine, including the necessary cultural change, implementing long-hole stoping, de-bottlenecking and the application of mechanisation. The result has been a significant improvement in safety performance, higher productivity and a more secure future for all those involved in the project.

Gekko Systems Pty Ltd have developed the Python Underground Processing Plant for the concentration of gold and sulfide ores. The Python plant has an established flow sheet including fine crushing, screening, gravity separation and flotation which aims to concentrate the valuable minerals (gold/sulfides). The aim of the plant is to achieve high valuable recovery into a mass yield of 10 - 30 per cent to reduce the amount of material that is needed to be taken to downstream processing. This paper examines the test work protocol for testing an ore to assess its suitability for the Python flow sheet. This paper will discuss the test methods employed to determine crushing requirements, continuous gravity recovery and flotation performance and how the results relate to Python design for the comminution, gravity and flotation circuits. Results from past test work will be discussed.

The nickel operations at Kambalda consist of mining thin massive to disseminated Ni sulphide orebodies from 10 individual mines of variable grade.Daily sampling involves visual estimation of the grade of working faces based on geological parameters. This system of grade estimation is used as a guide for daily grade control only.Nickel metal allocation is based on an external sampling system. As all ore sources are blended at the primary crusher, only one calculated mill head grade is available. Therefore all sources are sampled prior to crushing. This system historically consisted of mechanically grab sampling ore from trucks as they passed over a weighbridge on arrival at the concentrator. Currently the system involves diverting one out of every ten trucks to its mine sample stockpile, which is crushed through the primary, secondary and tertiary crushing system fortnightly. The individual mine grades are re-combined to create a total sample grade. This is reconciled against the calculated mill head grade. The reconciliation factor is applied uniformly to all individual mine sample grades to calculate mill reconciled mine grades.

Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) have the ability to immobilise dissolved metals by precipitating them as sulfides, provided that a favourable biochemical environment is created. Such an environment includes the presence of sulfate, anaerobic conditions and the availability of organic carbon. If such conditions are engineered within a reactive barrier or field-bioreactor, most metals can be effectively removed. To demonstrate this concept, three passive SRB field-bioreactors were constructed in 1998 at an abandoned mine site in the vicinity of Butte, Montana, USA to treat acid mine drainage with characteristic elevated concentration of metals and low pH. Performance of the field-bioreactors, using aqueous samples, was monitored over 32 months until the project was terminated, field-bioreactors were decommissioned and solid matrix sampling of the reactive matter was performed. The most important analytical results are presented in this paper together with conclusions regarding the appropriateness of the field-bioreactors construction features. Only Zn, Cu, and Cd were being removed as sulfides due to SRB activities. Changes in concentrations of other metals (Fe, Mn, Al, As), which do not necessarily precipitate as sulfide, seemed to be affected by SRB only in an indirect manner by responding to increased pH caused by SRB activity. An innovative cellular containment system used for placing organic matter worked very well in preventing settling of the organic matter and ensuring uniform flow of AMD throughout the entire cross-section of the organic carbon with no preferential flow paths This demonstration was funded by the US EPA and was jointly administered by the EPA and the US DOE under DOE contract number DE-AC22-96EW96405. The project was implemented by MSE Technology Applications, Inc, Butte, Montana, USA.

The Collie River catchment, located approximately 200 km south of Perth, covers an area of around 2830 km2 and is the source of run-off to the Wellington Dam, an important irrigation water resource for the Collie Irrigation District. The salinity of the Wellington Dam has increased due to historical clearing and irrigators currently use water with salinity levels approximately twice that of the Murray River in South Australia (Water and Rivers Commission, 2001). The Collie River Salinity Situation Statement (2001), released by the Water and Rivers Commission (now the Department of Water), identified realistic actions that could achieve the salinity reduction target. Subsequent benefit-cost analyses and prefeasibility studies recommended the diversion of the most saline flows in the Collie River away from the dam as an immediate intervention (URS, 2003). The East Branch of the Collie River above the locality of Buckingham (20 km east of Collie) contributes around half of the salt that flows into the Wellington Dam and the diversion and storage of the saltiest flows from the East Branch at Buckingham was identified as a viable option for reducing salinity in Wellington Dam. The proposal had one problem û the water could not be disposed of as quickly as it was diverted. However, in the vicinity of the diversion site were a number of coal mine voids and after preliminary discussions, the Government/Griffin Coal alliance was formed and from this the opportunities have continued. Diverted water would be stored temporarily in an adjacent mine void (Chicken Creek 4 void) and then disposed of to the sea. The disposal options included Western Power CorporationÆs saline discharge pipeline from Collie Power Station, or a new pipeline. The diverted water was also identified as a potential raw source for treatment and use in industry. This has opened up opportunities including desalination, water efficiencies in the power stations, increased reliability of water supply for the power stations, water for new industries, wastewater disposal options and extra water for PerthÆs water supply. In the process of solving the water storage problems the project introduced a range of mine water quality problems û heavy metals and pH û and the Department of Water (DoW) is now working with the mining industry and the Centre for Sustainable Mine Lakes (CSML) to develop treatment and management technologies. The project has received support and funding through the National Action Plan for Salinity and Water Quality (NAP) and it has been possible to accelerate and enhance this project as a result of NAP. The DoW has developed the proposal to an advanced stage and gained approvals for the capital diversion program to go ahead. The partnerships have expanded to include the second mining company, Premier Coal, the Water Corporation, Western Power and the Harvey Irrigation Cooperative. The proposal could feasibly result in a $90 million integrated water management initiative for Collie using the latest technology, mining operations and providing water for value adding industries in the local area. The DoW is not a mining company; however, our experience in managing water in times of shortage, environmental water quality criteria, competition for water and managing community expectations will have the same success factors:consultation and knowing your community and stakeholders, sharing issues and working in partnership can provide results far greater than the initial issue, even brackish water has value, every sector is in competition with each other and has to have a share of the water, an integrated approach can provide opportunities for development in areas of water shortage, and never think of water as wastewater.

This paper summarises the process taken to simplify 35 ground support standards accounting for the multiple development profiles, dynamic geotechnical environment and the practical safety implications of a large-scale change in the ground control standards. This reduction was required after an incident involving incorrect standards being issued. The subsequent investigation identified that: • Selection of ground support standard for a mining instruction (MI) is not straightforward due to multiple standards, standards not reflecting current reinforcement used and complex geotechnical environment being encountered. Instead, site-specific ground control instructions were being issued. • Ground support standards were hard to follow and confusing, errors were present and not all standards to scale. • Ground support standards being used did not reflect what was being installed, ie bolt type incorrect and mesh orientation different. • No process or tier action response plan (TARP) for operators to follow for ground control standard noncompliance. • No justification for ground support standards being used in the current geotechnical environment. • No process for ground support standard selection and thereby no paper trail to document and assess adequacy of performance. A project was undertaken to reduce and simplify the ground support standards, produce a justification document to support ground support design and develop a process for site practitioners to identify the type of ground support standard required for the mining instruction. The exercise of rationalising the ground support was met with some challenges, including: • Technical aspects to determine the level of demand and the capacity for each ground support scheme. • Training the geotechnical engineers how to determine the level of risk for each area. • Winning over other technical services staff and the underground mining contractor of the new approach and then implementation. One of the major successes was the acceptance by the underground operators who found the system simplified their work and gave them increased confidence in management of seismicity. The rationalised ground support standards have now been successfully in place for over two years.

The Douglas mineral sands deposit is located 75 km north of Hamilton in western Victoria, Australia. The deposit was discovered in the late 1990s by Basin Minerals Limited and purchased by Iluka Resources Ltd in 2002. Prestrip mining commenced in December 2004, with ore mining commencing in August 2005. Douglas is the first of several projects being implemented by Iluka Resources Ltd in the Murray Basin, with all heavy mineral concentrate planned to be treated at the companyÆs mineral separation plant in Hamilton. The mineralisation at Douglas lies along the south-eastern margin of the Murray Basin. It is hosted by marine Pliocene Loxton-Parilla Sands and consists of three discrete deposits; Bondi Main, Bondi West and Bondi East. The mineralised sediments dip at a low angle to the west and lie unconformably beneath a veneer of top soil (50 - 100 mm) and subsoil (up to 600 mm) and between three to 12 m of overburden. The barren overburden, characterised by high clay content (<53 ¦m material) generally provides a stark contrast to the sandy ore, which is between 1 m (parts of Bondi East) and 15 m (Bondi Main) thick. Both overburden and ore are removed utilising standard dry mining techniques using both scraper-bulldozer and truck-excavator combinations. All ore is delivered to run-of-mine (ROM) stockpiles before being reclaimed by front end loader into the processing plant. Grade control at Douglas is based around visual dig control aided by high precision survey, which enables accurate reference to the resource drilling and block model data. Vertical excavator faces, inclined scraper faces plus regular test pits and trenches provide opportunities for in pit mapping and sampling. This data is used to refine not only the resource estimate for Douglas but also the drilling, interpretation and resource modelling methods used for similar deposits across the basin. The foundations of the geological reconciliation process at Douglas are the in pit surveys undertaken each time the mining fleet has completed building a ROM stockpile. These surveys and the subsequent interrogation of resource models enable robust estimations of the heavy mineral content of the stockpiles, which are subsequently used to predict the daily input grades into the plant during their reclamation. Reconciliation of this daily data is then undertaken at the end of each month against metallurgical production data and plant balances. Learnings and results from the reconciliation process are used to further refine subsequent resource models and modelling methods.

"Prior to the 1950s in the USA, surface coalmines were generally left without any reclamation. As government regulations advanced, mine operators were required to backfill the area and plant grasses or trees. After the federal Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) was passed in 1977 in the USA, mine operators were required to conduct pre-mining analyses of the site and to designate a land use that could be achieved after the mining. Common post-mining land uses in the USA are: agricultural uses such as prime farmland reclamation with crops, hayland and pasture, and biofuel crops forestry wildlife habitat building site development.Provisions and regulations for each post-mining land use were developed and practices to achieve successful and sustainable land uses were established. Imaging sensor systems designed for the mining and minerals industry incorporate different physical measurement technologies that can be used to detect the machine environment, such as laser, ultrasonic/sonar, video and RF-sensors. The underlying physical measurement principles cannot be employed in most applications near the face without regular maintenance due to the harsh environmental conditions like dust, dirt or moisture. However, that is the area, where imaging sensors are most valuable to the machine operator. In the domain of 2D radar sensors these have been either restricted by the angular coverage area or by limited adaptability of signal processing algorithms. The unique full digital solid state design will establish a generation step in mining applications.In order to fill this gap of terrain imaging sensors, the Institute for Mining and Metallurgy Machinery (IMR) of the RWTH Aachen University, in cooperation with the radar company indurad, developed an imaging sensor based on radar technology employing the digital beam forming (DBF) concept. Through multiple transmitting and receiving antennas the sensor delivers high accuracy range and angular information. Using adaptive digital signal processing with multiple imaging algorithms and target detection routines, data of the surrounding environment can be used to enable automation functions in mining.A comprehensive range of radar scans in different environments have been evaluated and benchmarked by using laser scanners. Accuracy measurements in range and angular direction have shown minimal differences. Experimental measurements have been performed at slopes, on conveyor belts and hot cement clinker silos. The experimental system uses a frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) front-end combined with a processing unit for signal analysis and target detection.

This paper examines the application of Lean Manufacturing in a mining environment, based on experience within the Rio Tinto entities: Rio Tinto Aluminium, Northparkes Mines and Hunter Valley Operations. The three applications have tested the flexibility of the Lean methodology. Within Rio Tinto, Rio Tinto Aluminium was the first group to introduce Lean. The rollout began in late 2004. It was introduced firstly at Boyne Smelters, Gladstone, as a model site with the initial application in the Carbon Bake Furnace area. It was later extended to other sites including the Weipa Bauxite Mine. LeanÆs successful application within Rio Tinto Aluminium was in part responsible for its recent adoption by other Australian-based Rio Tinto business units including Northparkes Mines, a copper mining operation in Central New South Wales, and Hunter Valley Operations, a group of four coal mines in the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales. Lean is also being adopted by Rio Tinto Iron Ore. Rio Tinto Aluminium introduced Lean Manufacturing to complement an existing Six Sigma business improvement program and to achieve continuous improvement activities at a workplace level. Lean provides a similar level of rigour and discipline to Six Sigma but its application is everyday and for everyone, everywhere in the workplace. It is a valuable management tool. In a short time, Lean has achieved good and sometimes spectacular results improving productivity and efficiency at all sites, including our mining site. Within Rio Tinto Aluminium, it has also had beneficial impacts on our ability to develop and retain employees.

On behalf of resident members, I have to offer the visitors a very cordial welcome to Mount Morgan, and to tell them that all arrangements have been made to enable them to inspect the mine and works at their own convenience, and to supply them with any particulars they may need.It is very pleasing indeed to see such a large gathering, especially on account of the long journeys many have undertaken in order to be present. The first congress in Queensland, about eleven years ago, was attended by a comparatively small number of members, and a rather long time has been allowed to pass in consequence. The large attendance at this meeting encourages the holding of meetings in Queensland more frequently. Owing to the long distances, and the number of mining centres in Australia and New Zealand, we cannot expect to meet oftener than once in six or seven years in...

A major constraint on sustaining high rates of production in the collieries of the Southern Coalfield of New South Wales is the inability to develop panels fast enough to match the rates of extraction. This inability is particularly crippling in the case of retreat longwall mining and is due to nearly half the time in roadway drivage being spent on strata control operations such as roof support.Increased rates of roadway drivage and significantly improved roadway stability can be achieved by the application of yield pillars between parallel roadways. These pillars are designed to yield immediately upon formation and transfer the damaging roof loads away from the immediate vicinity of the roadways. Since the width of the yield pillar is the key to their successful application, it was determined through the Yield Pillar Experiment conducted by Kembla Coal and Coke Pty Ltd at West Cliff Colliery.Three experimental headings, each nominally 5.5 m wide and 2.8 m high, were driven to form two tapering pillars. The width of these pillars progressively decreased from 24 m to 3 m over a length of 154 m. The convergence between the roof and floor of the headings measured at various cross-sections corresponding to predetermined widths of the pillars are analysed in this paper to evaluate the stability of the tapering pillars at the different widths.The width of the yield pillar in a three heading development layout at West Cliff Colliery was determined to be 7.5 m.

Process mineralogy provides the mineralogical information required by geometallurgists to address the inherent variation of geological data. The successful beneficiation of ores mostly depends on the ability of mineral processing to be efficiently adapted to the ore characteristics, liberation being one of the most relevant mineralogical parameters. The liberation characteristics of ores are intimately related to mineral texture. Therefore, the characterisation of liberation necessarily requires the identification and quantification of those textural features with a major bearing on mineral liberation. From this point of view, grain size, bonding between mineral grains and intergrowth types are considered the most influential textural attributes. While the quantification of grain size is a usual output of automated current technologies, information about grain boundaries and intergrowth types is usually descriptive and difficult to quantify to be included in the geometallurgical model.Aiming at the systematic and quantitative analysis of the intergrowth type within mineral particles, a new methodology based on digital image analysis has been developed. In this work, the ability of this methodology to achieve a more complete characterisation of liberation is explored by the analysis of chalcopyrite in the rougher concentrate of the Kansanshi copper-gold mine (Zambia). Results obtained show that the method provides valuable textural information to achieve a better understanding of mineral behaviour during concentration processes. The potential of this method is enhanced by the fact that it provides data unavailable using current technologies.
