"The use of flotation columns has remained a contentious issue among mill operators. There are those who consider them an essential part of any mineral processing operation, while others consider them a necessary evil, which should only be installed if there is no alternative. Lastly, there are those who believe they should not be installed, no matter how great the perceived benefit.This paper provides an analysis of over 4000 installed flotation columns, contained in the Amec Foster Wheeler flotation database. Changing trends in column flotation use by type, commodity and geographical region are discussed. The effect of changing commodity prices and the China ‘phenomenon’ are reviewed. Special reference is made to the changing face of column flotation in Australia.Of note is the fact that after falling to a 20 year low in installed flotation column capacity in 2014, flotation columns during 2015 went through a resurgence in popularity. This resurgence was in direct contradiction to depressed metal prices and was driven by brownfield optimisations to reduce off-site costs, particularly in base metals. SYMONS) IN PRESENTING THE MEDAL TO LAURENCE CHARLES BRODlE-HALL, C.M.G.The Institute Medal is awarded to a select band of people who have rendered great service to the mining industry and the community. Tonight it is my privilege to present the 1976 Institute Medal to one of our members, Mr L. C. Brodie-Hall, C.M.G.Laurence Charles Brodie-Hall, as chief executive in Western Australia for Western Mining Corporation Limited (WMC) from 1958 to his retirement in 1975, had a profound influence on the company's growth and development which had a significant influence on the prosperity of the State of Western Australia and, in turn, Australia.Following the company's decision in 1952 to diversify from gold mining, he took a leading part in the exploration and development of the bauxite deposits in the Darling Ranges by a subsidiary company, Western Aluminium N.L., and the subsequent formation of Alcoa of Australia Limited, the development of the first long term export contract for iron ore from Western Australia, the development of the nickel deposits at Kambalda and the subsequent establishment of a nickel refinery and nickel smelter in Western Australia.

This paper reports a biogeochemical study of the Siberia lode of the Herberton tin field. Soil near the orebody contained high levels of Fe, Cu, Pb, Sn, As, Mld Mn. Polycarpaea spirostylis and Indigofera dominii were associated with these high levels but several other species apparently could not tolerate them. The potential of these species as indicator plants is discussed.

The Ridgeway gold mine has been an enigma of the international underground hard rock community for nearly 20 years. It nearly didn’t eventuate as it was more than 500 m below a farmer’s paddock in Central New South Wales when the exploration team, looking for open pit deposits, got a sniff on its last attempt and then drilled the high-grade discovery hole. It took separate studies to find an economic mining approach. Newcrest, then a mid-tier mining company, took the venture that set it on a path of growth and built what was to become the backbone of the company for the next 15 years.The initial mining method was sublevel caving (SLC) for the upper 300 m of the orebody. The nameplate production rate for the SLC was 4 Mt/a, which was reached in June 2002 shortly after the commissioning of the materials handling system. The ultimate production rate was subsequently lifted to around 6 Mt/a through a series of innovative and efficiency initiatives. In June 2007, approval was granted for the development of a block cave (BC) operation to extract the ore reserve situated immediately below the existing SLC operations, Ridgeway Deeps. The BC was designed at approximately 6 Mt/a to match the concentrator and a systematic improvement process through the entire underground system again saw delivery rates consistently around 10 Mt/a.In line with the production rate increases, Newcrest was also committed to advancing caving knowledge through a number of targeted research and development experiments and new processes. These were primarily related to improving cave ore recovery through systematic draw marker trials, cave propagation through preconditioning techniques with associated monitoring systems. New technologies were also developed to improve the safety and efficiency of the mine through data collection, cave establishment techniques, production dispatching and autonomous loading.CITATION:Dunstan, G, 2016. The effectiveness of shear-flocculation as a method for upgrading simple mixtures of ultrafine (1-11 \lm) scheelite and garnet was evaluated. Statistical methods were used in the design and analysis of the main test program.The stirrer speed, stirring time, and initial weight ratio were all found to have significant effects on both the recovery and grade of the floes produced. The particle sizes also had an effect on the final grade. There were several important interactions between factors which also affected the results. Optimum conditions for shear-flocculation were established, and under these conditions about 80 per cent of the scheelite could be recovered at a grade which depended on the composition of the starting mixture. Starting with mixtures containing 10 and 50 per cent scheelite, the best final grades were between 20 and 50 per cent and between 70 and 90 per cent respectively, the actual value depending on the particular combination of particle sizes.

MINING operations in the Waihi mine began, under the present proprietorship in the year 1889. Previous to this, and as far back as the year 1880, the presence of reefs in the Martha Hill had been known, and surface working on a small scale had beencarried out, without any great measure of success. The only method of treatment in use at this time was the old system of light stamps, amalgamating tables and berdans, and recovery by this method being low, little margin for profit was left, so thatthe property in these days was not considered of great importance and work on the area was only carried on spasmodically by different owners.On the transfer of the leases to the present company, calcining, dry crushing, and hot pan amalgamation was adopted as the method of treatment, and this system was continued till the more modern cyanide process was introduced and applied. As themethods of treatment and gold-saving became more efficient with the application of more modern and scientific processes, the importance and future prospects of the mine became more and more pronounced, and mining on a larger and more comprehensive scale was gradually established.As in the case of ore treatment, mining methods in the early stages were not as far adv.anced as the adopted practice of today, and numerous shafts, levels close together in vertical height.

A theoretical model for gas outbursts in underground coal mines is as follows. An outburst is the structural failure ofcoal due to excess stress resulting from body forces caused by gas pressure gradients. These body forces influence the stability of a mine face in the same manner that gravitational body forces affect the stability of the roof of a mine. The magnitude ofthese body forces can be appreciated when it is realized that for an average density coal, the gravitational body force is equal in magnitude to the force from a gas flow with a pressure gradient of 14 kPa m-I. Gas pressure gradients and the resultant stresses within a seam can be calculated with numerical methods. Thus, providing the necessary parameters can be measured or estimated, in principle the theory can be applied to compare the outburst risk of various mining arrangements.

The igneous intrusions in SE Papua New Guinea are part of a sub-volcanic to plutonic, high-K calc-alkaline to shoshonitic suite. High-K andesitic to dacitic intrusives on Misima and Woodlark Islands, and shoshonitic intrusives in Milne Bay and the eastern Owen Stanley Ranges are related to late Cenozoic andesitic volcanism. Both suites are associated with epithermal Au-Ag deposits and weak porphyry Cu-Au mineralisation. All significant alluvial and lode gold occurrences in the region are spatially related to intrusions. Intrusions in the D'Entrecasteaux Islands and near Mt Suckling are core plutons related to basement doming, and appear to have no association with either volcanism or hydrothermal mineralisation. The core plutons are not petrochemi:ally distinct from the volcano-re:-ed Intrusions.

Comminution within rod mills has been investigated by use of a matrix analysis of breakage processes. A parameter, the number of breakage stages, has been introduced and comminution within all rod mills has been expressed in terms of the number of grinding stages and a function which describes the feed rate, mill diameter, and mill speed. The effect of variation in feed rate, feed sizing analysis and mill speed on the number of breakage stages is discussed, but no general relation is proposed because more study is needed.INTRODUCTIONRod mills are normally used as the first unit of multi-unit systems for the grinding of metalliferous ores and the cost of operating rod mills may be considerable. For both economic and metallurgical reasons, it is therefore necessary that the mills should be operated efficiently and that a knowledge of the mechanism of the size reduction process within rod mills should be as complete as possible. Two radioisotope techniques suitable for the rapid laboratory determination of the ash content of coal have been tested ou unwashed coal samples from four Australian coal seams. In one techniqne, measurements of backscattered 238Pu L X-rays and iron K X-rays from finely ground coal samples have been combined to determine ash content in uuwashed coals to ±0.5 weight per ce111 ash (ls) for three seams and 0.9 weight per cent ash for the fourth.The second technique, which involves measurements of the transmission by the coal of narrow beams of 241Am 60 keV and 123Ba 356 keV ? rays, requires less sample preparat ion. The ash was determined to within the range of 0.8 to 2.6 weight per cent for the four seams (unwashed coal). For washed coals, errors are expected to be < ±0.5 weight per cent ash.

THE North Mount Lyell Mine is situated on the southern side of Mount Lyell at an altitude of 1750 ft. above sea-level. The average rainfall is 117 in., and there are generally several light falls of snow during the year. Despite the heavy rainfall, which is fairly evenly distributed over each of the twelve months, the climate is equable and not unduly rigorous, and, provided that the mine employee is suitably clad, it is only on exceptional days that he experiences any discomfort by becoming wet journeying to and from the mine.The majority of employes reside at Queenstown, and are conveyed by special trains to and from the top of the haulage, which is less than a mile from the mine. The mean surface temperature at the mine is 46° F., with a maximum variation from 26° F. to 85° F., the relative humidity generally being higher than in other districts. The rock temperature is 48° F. on the 200-ft. or Main Adit level, and 54° F, on the 1200-ft. level, giving a rise of 6° F. for 1000 ft. in depth.The ventilation of the mine is natural, the downcast being served by the Crown and Blocks shafts and the Crown mullock pass, and the upcast air is carried away from the workings by the Main shaft and the Nos. 1 and 2 mullock passes. The quantity of air circulating varies from 25,000 cub. ft. to 35,000 cub. ft. per minute, the greater quantity moving in the colder weather. The downcast air in traversing the wet shafts becomes saturated and enters the level at the rock temperature of 54° F. in winter and about 56° F. in summer, while temperature readings of the outcast air indicate that it varies very little.In the southern end of the mine the Blocks shaft downcast air upcasts through the different stopes, and their mullock passes, to the level above for each level to the 700-ft. level, where it passes to one of the main uptakes. The Old Man Range, south of Alexandra, in central Otago consists of a package of highly folded greenschist facies schist of the Wanaka lithologic association. The range is crosscut by several east to ENE-striking high angle gold-bearing quartz veins, (eg Whites Reef and Grays Reef), which were extensively worked in the late 1800s. The range is bounded on its east side by the Old Man Fault, which separates these rocks from generally flat lying and planar Caples Terrane schist. To the west of the Old Man Fault, about halfway up the range, a large subparallel, 100 m wide fault zone strikes NNW and appears to cut off the historic veins. The fault zone consists of highly sheared and folded rocks and numerous high angle cataclasites and centimetre-scale clay gouge zones. Hydrothermal alteration is not apparent and the individual faults and shears are clay altered, possibly due to weathering, without visible quartz veins. Gold, limonite pseudomorphs after pyrite and rutile are concentrated in some of the narrow cataclasites and gouge zones. These mineralised structures are texturally similar to the gold-bearing reefs and may be structurally related. It is postulated that the NNW-striking shear zone and ENE-striking veins may be a conjugate array formed during a period of Cretaceous normal faulting.

Brown coal production in Victoria's Latrobe Valley Region (Figure 1) continues to rise and currently stands at around 50 Mt per annum. With the exception of around 2 Mt used to produce some 700 Kt of brown coal briquettes, this coal is mined by the State Electricity Commission to fuel large thermal power stations with a total installed capacity of just over 5 000 Megawatts. The moisture content of the coal as mined typically exceeds 60 per cent, making Latrobe Valley coal a markedly low rank fuel. The lack of heating value is, however, compensated for through power station design and by the fact that ash yield is very low, usually within the range of one per cent to four per cent on a dry basis. This means that compared with most other coals, the burning of Latrobe Valley brown coal produces relatively small quantities of waste products and discharges a minimal level of pollutants into the atmosphere. Even so, the inherent quality of Latrobe Valley coal does vary significantly from one area to another (Gloe, 1991; Barton et al, 1992) both on a local and a regional scale. Such variations need to be recognised and understood in order to not only realise efficiency gains in existing power stations but to properly assess resource potential for future utilisation and the application of new technologies. The principal aim of this paper is not to describe coal quality variation in detail or to speculate on the nature of and reasons for such variation. Rather, it is to simply underscore that significant differences do occur and that this is clearly a factor which needs to be considered in any evaluation of Latrobe Valley brown coal as a resource for the future.

This work was commenced at a time when information on the manufacture of cemented tungsten carbide was urgently needed in Australia. Much information of a general type has been published, but many of the details of the processes used are still undisclosed. The aim of this research was to determine a satisfactory way in which cemented tungsten carbide could, be made, and to investigate the problems which are associated with the process. As the work proceeded, its ramifications grew continually, and it was necessary to limit the possible lines of investigation. After much experimental work, a 9% cobalt-tungsten carbide alloy was developed which had satisfactory properties when used as a cutting tip. The effect of certain variables on the properties of this particular alloy was investigated.The tungsten carbide was prepared in stages from King Island scheelite concentrates under strict laboratory control, whilst the cobalt (1) used was made from cobalt oxide prepared from crude cobalt oxide obtained from Eisdon.In order to clarify the detailed experimental work, a brief summary of the method used for the preparation of cemented tungsten carbide follows.Tungsten carbide and cobalt are prepared in a very finely powdered state, and are then thor,oughly mixed by a ball milling operation. The resultant mixture is pressed in a suitably shaped die into small compacts which are subsequently '''presintered,'' i.e., heated' in hydrogen between 800°C. and 1000°C. The final sintering is carried out in hydrogen between 1,400°C.and 1,600°C. for about half an hour. These "alloys" may contain from 3 to 13% cobalt, depending on the particular properties required of them.PREPARATION OF MATERIALSThe tungsten oxide prepared as described by Smithells (2) was extremely finely divided, and after a few hours' grinding in a ball mill, the powder consisted of material below 10 microns iJ;l size. The oxide was reduced to tungsten metal with hydrogen in a tube furnace. Test Work on High Throughput Diamond Tracer Recovery from Alluvial Recovery Tailings with a Containerised Optical Sorter Under Real Production Conditions Worldwide alluvial diamond deposits are traditionally processed with dense media separation and XRF sorters, hand picking or grease tables. The test work conducted verifies the performance of an optical sorter detecting the transparency of particles for diamond recovery from the DMS concentrate, eg XRF-sorter and handpicking tailings. The containerised setup enables economically feasible, high throughput, semi-mobile setups to retreat recovery tailings from alluvial and also primary deposits. The test work has been conducted with quartz and glass particles, which are less transparent or comparably transparent, under realistic production conditions on a 600 mm belt machine with an installed electrical power of only 21 kW. The results show that 99 per cent recovery can be reached at a throughput of 10 t/h in the -8 + 2 mm fraction and at 22 t/h in the -25 + 8 mm fraction. At a throughput of 18 t/h a recovery of 88 per cent has been assessed. At a further escalation of the throughput, dust in the sorter container made sorting impossible in the coarse fraction and the recovery decreased significantly in the fine fraction. Analysis of the belt coverage indicates that higher throughputs of the coarse fraction can be fed onto the optical sorter if the dust extraction system is improved. The results are basis for the decision to conservatively feed 20 t/h of the coarse fraction and 17 t/h of the fine fraction in day to day production. The settings have been applied to sort alluvial recovery tailings in South Africa and will be applied to sort the recovery tailings of a primary deposit in Lesotho. The test work has shown that an optical sorter can be used to retreat recovery tailings with high throughputs. The compact setup of a screen and a 9 m standard container enables semi-mobile, temporary setups for small recovery tailings dumps and remote areas. In addition, sorting on transparency ensures the recovery of high value low-fluorescent diamonds.

Development and Validation of Ore Characterisation Test and its Use in Variability Campaigns of Comminution Circuits Impact testing was developed by assessing the fragmentation characteristics of ore samples after controlled impact. Standard methods are, however, limited to relatively large and coarse samples, which thus precludes their use in early stages of projects, as well as where only drill cores are available. The method described in this paper is based on the same concepts of controlled ore breakage, but using relatively smaller samples. It is particularly useful in assessing the variability of ore characteristics in early stages of greenfield projects, as well as in predicting the performance of existing grinding circuits. A validation program was carried out in which a good adherence to the original test results was obtained. The results were used for (a) simulation of a copper comminution circuit as a function of the ore characteristics, and (b) evaluation of sampling protocols used for assessing fragmentation characteristics.
