This paper is a step in the direction of developing a computer model of the near source dispersal of suspended particulate matter (SPM) in planetary boundary layer (PBL). Since Surface Mine blasting is done during daytime, study of daytime dispersion in convective boundary layer (CBL) is relevant to the mining engineers. The scope of this paper covers dispersal after the blast in any type of PBL ie stable, convective and neutral but only under weak wind condition. Mathematical analysis of the dispersion of vertical dust column has been carried out during weak wind conditions in a tropical meteorological environment. It is noted that dust concentration reaches its maximum value some distance away from the point of blast, immediately after the blast (t*=1) and thereafter rapidly decreases. After a short interval from the time of blast at t*=11 the dust concentration shows linear decrease in concentration with distance. Dust concentration also rapidly drops during the interval t*=1 to t*=11, thereafter, rate of drop is nearly the same at any distance from the point of blast.

Orebodies constitute naturally occurring, commonly highly variable concentrations of minerals in the earth’s crust formed through varying and highly unpredictable processes. Orebody knowledge is a core foundation of a mining company’s asset base underpinning all decisions about Mineral Resource and Ore Reserves, future production, development and ultimately the profitability and competitiveness of a mining enterprise. The decision to invest in a mineral project is usually based upon a techno-economic evaluation of the project and having clear approval pathways to gain local community support and address social and environmental impacts. The main objective of the techno-economic evaluation is to determine the optimum development sequence for the particular orebody in question and to estimate the economic viability of the project and the future return on investment to its stakeholders, balancing the inherent value of the mineral in the ground against the costs of development and market pricing. With the exception of market-driven commodity prices, virtually all revenue and cost estimates fundamentally stem from the understanding and subsequent modelling of the orebody. A reliable estimate of the ore deposit grade and other geological value-drivers is the foundation upon which the business case for future mine development and operation is intricately dependent. Orebody knowledge is, therefore, the fundamental driver of the mineral project cycle, influencing the progression of studies and consequently, the resource company’s ability to declare Exploration Results, Mineral Resources or Ore Reserves which govern the source and cost of funding available to the project. Drilling provides a ‘vector’ to the true nature of the orebody and effectively buys time to manage the technical risk associated with the orebody. Despite its perceived high cost, in both time and money terms, drilling is the only available technology for acquiring the necessary orebody knowledge to support technical and economic studies and to minimise orebody-driven cash flow uncertainty and volatility. However, like all costs, pressure to minimise drilling budgets is ubiquitous across the minerals industry. Paired with inappropriate key performance indicators, drilling is often regarded as a cost to be minimised, rather than an investment to be optimised. Furthermore, as future deposits get deeper and more complex, the collection of orebody knowledge is increasingly on the critical path for project development. The increasing cost of data collection pertaining to these deposits increases the temptation to minimise orebody knowledge gathering at the cost of long-term value as the reduction or postponement of drilling results in greater orebody knowledge risk at all stages of the value chain. Indeed the true cost of the decision to drill less is rarely known until the mine is in operation, well after the mine project evaluation team has moved on. This paper aims to promote orebody knowledge as the fundamental source of endogenous project financial risk and, consequently, its critical importance in project financial evaluation. Furthermore, the report documents experimental research into the development of an econometric model for valuing orebody knowledge. Using the density of drilling data as a proxy measure of orebody knowledge, the proposed approach integrates well-established stochastic grade modelling techniques with the mathematical mechanics of Decoupled Net Present Value (DNPV) which, combined with stochastic grade modelling (conditional simulation), lends itself to the financial International Mining Geology Conference 2022 | Brisbane, Australia and Online | 22–23 March 2022 3 assessment of orebody knowledge risk. Filtered dry stack tailing storage facilities offer many advantages over thickened tailing storage facilities and yet, most of the mining companies still prefer the latter.Some of the advantages of filtered dry stack tailing storage facilities are: increased structural integrity of the tailing storage facility, which is even more critical in areas of high seismicity, close to nearby communities or environmentally sensitive areas; maximised water recovery which is particularly important in arid environments where water is an extremely valuable resource and its supply is regulated; optimised recovery of valuable metals in the process water, avoiding high cyanide concentration going to detoxification (both aspects haven’t been emphasised enough in technical papers on this subject); optimised space to store the tailings in mountainous regions; minimised elevation of embankment height, providing a safe option to store the tailings in places where there is limited area available; simplified license approval to operate where the tailing facility is a big issue; and avoidance of potential problems with nearby communities.Filtered dry stack tailing storage facilities have some disadvantages such as: technology limitations in operations that process high throughputs (eg >50 000 tpd) as they require many filters resulting in high maintenance and operating costs; higher capital cost; low efficiency in the filtration process, particularly in ores with high clay content increasing operating problems and capital cost; the new technology risk with possible debottlenecking issues and a longer time to achieve the design throughput; and the need to treat larger water flow rates when the water balance is negative.This paper analyses: the operating practices of Mexican gold and silver operations using filtered dry stacking storage facilities; implementation issues, advantages and disadvantages; quantifiable reductions in gold and silver losses and actual lower detoxification cost; and current trends to use filtered dry stacking storage facilities in new projects. Screening is a critical part of many mineral processing circuits and keeping the aperture of the screening media within specification is vital to ensure efficient performance of the processing plant. Typical ways of estimating and/or measuring the wear of the screening media vary from very subjective methods (for instance, using the human eye) to manually checking the width of a few of the more severely worn gaps with a measurement device. Subjective methods can be flawed by human error while manual checking can distort the polyurethane or rubber materials that are used in several types of screening media. All of these errors can cause either premature replacement of panels or, even worse, poor screening of the material.Metso Process Technology and Innovation (PTI) and Metso Screening Media Solutions (SMS) have developed an innovative method that measures screen aperture using advanced image processing techniques. Field trials of the device are presented in this paper, which shows the comparison between the different methods of measuring apertures. Case studies demonstrate how the system, when combined with ScreenTrack, MetsoÆs industry leading maintenance system, and screening media, is providing users with the best possible screening solutions.

Bendigo Mining operates a 600 000 t/a comminution, gravity, flotation and leaching processing plant for the recovery of gold from their Kangaroo Flat Operation, in the Bendigo goldfields. The free gold and gold bearing sulfi des present are typically coarse grained and hence are highly amenable to gravity recovery. Plant operating data is consistently showing that over 78 per cent of the feed gold is recovered in a circuit, consisting of inline pressure jigs, inline spinners followed by free gold tabling and intensive leaching of tabling tails. The circuit receives coarse crushed product from high pressure grinding rolls and the grinding mill discharge, which allows material to be re-circulated through the gravity process until the particles are small enough to enter the flotation circuit. A plant audit was completed on 26 November 2009 designed to give an indication of the overall operational characteristics of the gravity circuit including single pass efficiencies of associated equipment. The techniques, results and challenges of such a survey are discussed.

Fimiston Open Pit is operated by Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) as a joint venture between Barrick Gold and Newmont Mining. Over 110 years of underground mining resulted in the development of nearly 3500 km of underground workings including backfilled and open stopes up to half a million tonnes in size. These voids significantly complicate blasting processes at KCGM, influencing blast movement direction and magnitude. Blast movement monitoring to improve mine reconciliations was identified as an improvement project in the business plan for the geology team in 2008. Following successful trials in 2008 to 2009, blast monitoring and translation of ore blocks were implemented as a permanent grade control program from late 2009 and is now part of the Management Operating System (MOS) of the mine. This paper presents a summary of results from the Blast Movement Monitoring (BMM®) data collected to date. Ore blocks at KCGM are translated primarily using BMM® data. This data is obtained from the BMM® system which measures the movement of a radio transmitter installed in a blast pattern from a preblast position to a post-blast position. The application of the data collected by the BMM® tends to be both mine site and blast specific. At KCGM, an average distance obtained from the BMM® data within a given shot is the primary method used for translation. In the case that BMM® data is unavailable, a theoretical movement vector established from Orica Shotplus with distances gained from the historical BMM® database is used. Data is presented in an ore loss and dilution exercise for a bench undertaken at KCGM to understand the potential effects on reconciliations. Improvements that have flowed from implementing blast monitoring include improved reconciliations when combined with other grade control improvement projects. The increase in liaison between the geology and blast personnel at KCGM has been a significant improvement gained from the implementation of the blast monitoring program. This has allowed a better understanding of blast movement and the effects on ore dilution and ore loss by the mine geology team. In addition, the discussion of blasting tie-in plans between geology and blasting personnel has been improved which leads to more favourable blasting practices that take ore movement into account.

Sunrise Dam Gold Mine is a large open pit mine 730 km NE of Perth, Western Australia. Contract mining commenced in the open pit in September 1996 in lake clays and saprolites with the first fresh rock mined late 1999, and the underground starting the first decline in October 2003. By May 2007, over 150 million cubic metres of material had been mined and the pit was 360 m deep with 80 m remaining before reaching the planned final depth in early 2008. A final cut-back in the northwest will commence in late 2007 with open pit mining in the Mega Pit expected to conclude in late 2010. The challenges of developing the pit can be divided into three phases:Soft materials û mining was in multiple staged pits and cut-backs in lake clays, saprolites, weathered material. The varying characteristics had a significant impact on mining methods and slope stability. Structural û mining was gradually exposing more fresh rock and the drive was to understand how major structures and lithological contacts impact on local and large-scale stability. This had a significant influence on mine design and scheduling. Slope angles û achieving the final slope angle is critical. This is done through application of high standards of final wall establishment and proactive geotechnical hazard identification and management. This includes dealing with the rapid rate of descent, interaction with underground excavations and managing rock fall risk. The paper discusses each of these phases, highlighting the geotechnical controls implemented to date, looking at their success and impact on mining.

The Gameta Gold Deposit is located on the north-eastern corner of Fergusson Island in the D'Entrecasteaux Islands of Milne Bay Province, PNG, at lat. 9¦ 25' 5, long. 150¦ 47' E or AMG co- ordinate 256740 E/8959000 N (Figure 1). The area is covered by the Fergusson (SC56-05) 1:250,000 scale Topographic Map Sheet and the Koitabu (9079)1:100,000 scale Topographic Map Sheet. The property is held 100% by Union Mining NL (UMG) and lies 105 km NNE of Alotau and 33 km to the ESE of UMGs recently developed Wapolu Gold Mine, a Joint Venture between UMO (51%) and Macmin NL (49%). The inferred resource estimated from surface results and 105 RC drill holes, currently stands at 1.89 million tonnes at 2.6 git gold (1.0 g/t Au cut-off) or 155,000 oz. Evaluation of the property is currently proceeding. To date 111 RC holes have been drilled for a total of 4611 m.

The Newmont Boddington Gold (NBG) processing plant was designed for 35Mt/y with ball mills expected to deliver a combined new mill feed rate of 4837 tonnes/hr. Since beginning commercial production in late 2009, the plant has steadily increased throughput to meet design capacity in 2014 and reached 37 Mt/y in 2015. Through improved efficiencies, changes to the milling circuit have taken place since commissioning to take the plant beyond its design to an actual throughput of 39.0 Mt in 2017 and a budgeted throughput of 39.4 Mt/y this year.The NBG milling circuit has four parallel ball mills, each consisting of a 7.9 x 13.4 m ball mill with twin 7.5 MW fixed speed motors in closed circuit with twelve 650 mm cyclones. Each mill is fed by two wet screens with the undersize gravitating to a mill discharge hopper where it is combined with the ball mill discharge and pumped to hydrocyclones for classification. The cyclone underflow is re-ground to a target P80 of 150 µm.This paper will focus on process improvements made to the NBG milling circuit which include cyclone reconfiguration, fine screen panel redesign, implementation of an expert control system, mill power draw increase and grinding media changes to take NBG beyond its design throughput.CITATION:McCamley, C, Petrucci, P and Blay, K, 2018. In response to the implementation of a new schedule for iron ore fines in the International Maritime OrganizationÆs (IMO) International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes (IMSBC) Code, improved measures for the management of moisture have been developed. In particular, prediction of cargo moisture allows management of iron ore fines within the supply?chain to facilitate the safe?shipping of iron ore fines.An ARIMA model, augmented to allow for shipment tonnage, has been developed to predict the moisture level from previous shipments of the same product. The model explains about 60 per cent of the moisture variance. It was found that inclusion of other available information, such as ore composition, train/rake assays and recent rainfall at port and mine, did not add to the predictive power of the model.CITATION:Everett, J E, Linden, D and Maney, P, 2013. Production sharing and cost apportionment in joint ventures is commonplace in Australasia today and elsewhere. It is a recognised convention that, with the exception of a free carry situation, joint venture participants usually share the proceeds of the joint venture in direct proportion to their respective participating interest, after having first paid its respective cash calls, in advance, to cover the projectÆs ongoing operating and capital cost requirements.In surface mines, the parties simply pay their way and take their proceeds in this manner. In underground mines, the situation is no different, though treatment of capital, depreciation and tax may differ between the parties. A common feature in many cases is the creation of a joint venture entity to conduct the business. This entity then collects cash from the parties, banks it, employs the staff, runs the operation, provides reports and pays out the proceeds. This convention appears to be relatively simple in application. In practice, it has been known to be complicated in the situation where the participants take their product at the mine gate and undertake their own marketing and selling arrangements. A more complex situation presents itself where the joint venture tenement boundary with an unrelated third party straddles an economic deposit. In this scenario, both the joint venture parties and the third party may wish to mine the deposit, sharing some infrastructure and costs, yet taking their own product as it is produced. A case study outlining such a situation is presented in the paper, outlining firstly how the major cost categories were identified and treated for cost apportionment purposes. Secondly, a mechanism for the equitable apportionment of product is suggested. Finally, issues such as timing and cost reporting are dealt with, together with a checklist of points which should be considered when a similar situation might arise in the future.

Prior to 1972, Peko Mines Limited at Tennant Creek used a central mill at Peko, which consisted of a gravity circuit, flotation and cyanidation of tailings, to treat their gold ore from surrounding mines. The Warrego concentrator, 60km to the west, was built to handle the Warrego and Gecko copper orebodies, which were being developed concurrently with the concentrator construction The Warrego concentrator consisted of a flotation circuit, using autogenous grinding at 100 - 120 tph, compared to the more elaborate Peko circuit employing rod mill - ball mill grinding capable of treating only 18 - 26 tph. During development of the Warrego copper mine a gold rich ore pod was located, because of which the mining plans were adjusted to allow simultaneous, separate extraction of the copper and gold ores. However, the plans for the concentrator were not affected as the gold ore could be carted 60km to the Peko central mill for processing.

A great range of contacting equipment is used in solvent extraction. However, a tower filled with a regular packing offers many advantages in the direct extraction from slurries. A study was made of the flow of a dense slurry through a packed tower in which the continuous phase was kerosene. The grid type packing, which was preferentially wetted by the slurry, had slats inclined at an angle of 30¦, to the horizontal. On the sur- face of the slats there were uniformly spaced longitudinal indentat- ions. These were of a height slightly less than the film thickness and divided the slurry discharging from the bottom of the slats into a number of uniform streams. When slurry entered the tower it was distributed by means of a troughs and weirs type of distributor. Because of the relatively high slurry velocities that occur at the entry region, it was necess- ary to have the distributor and the first two grids above the solvent level. The interface at the bottom of the tower was located at the mid-point of the bottom grid, so that the slurry entered the interface as a continuous film across the full width of the slats. Using the above system, stable flow with low entrainment was achieved at slurry flow rates of 3.4 mis/cm/sec. This would be equivalent to a flow rate of 177 gallons per minute through a tower of cross-section 4 ft 4 in. by 4 ft 10 in., or 1200 tons per day of solids of specific gravity 2.6 when the pulp density was 65 per cent. Previous tests indicated that a total tower height of about 30 ft would be required for a recovery of better than 99 per cent.

With the prevalence of Mine Internet of Things (MIoT), different types of sensors have been widely deployed in mine sites for environmental monitoring and operational management. Currently, sensors in mine sites are mainly powered by cables or batteries. However, the deployment and maintenance of a power supply network can be difficult and expensive, and batteries have a limited lifespan. The vibration energy harvesting (VEH) technology can be used to provide power for lowpower sensors in mine sites. This presentation briefly introduces three widely used VEH methods (ie piezoelectric, electromagnetic, and electrostatic). The performance of a commercial electromagnetic energy harvester (ReVibe model D) is evaluated based on the vibration of a lab vibrator (3 g, 50 Hz) and an idling SUV automobile (0.3 g, 25 Hz). Experimental results indicate that a ReVibe energy harvester can generate adequate electricity to power a sensor, and its power output depends on the load resistance as well as the vibration frequency and amplitude of vibration sources. To apply VEH to mining applications, this study also analyses the characteristics of vibration sources at the mine site based on the vibration data collected from various operating machines in a coal handling and preparation plant (CHPP). The vibration analysis results indicate that all the measured vibration sources in the CHPP can generate stable and abundant vibrations, characterised by substantial amplitudes (up to 5.55 g) and low dominant frequencies (ranging from 14 Hz to 25 Hz), which are sufficient for VEH.

Rail, port and shipping charges represent 30 to 50 per cent of landed costs for Australian coal mines selling to Asia. This proportion is higher for sales to Europe, yet it is in Europe where Australian producers are aiming for increased market share. The landed cost of coal to the international customer is the key parameter which determines market competitiveness. The objective of this study is to examine Australian export coal competitiveness in terms of transport distance. The approach used examines world coking coal and steaming coal production and the transport distances between major exporting regions and importing countries. Reference is made to the importance of land transport costs and a comparative approach for emphasising the relative magnitude of this factor is developed. Models developed are examined in terms of Australia's exports and a conclusion is reached that a reduction in rail freight costs would be an effective measure for improving the competitiveness of Australia's coal industry.

"Inter-aquifer leakage due to fractures caused by coal seam gas extractions or longwall mining is an important issue for both the gas and coal industries. Currently, predicting stress induced macro-porosity associated with hydraulic fracturing, depressurisation via dewatering or collapse of overlying seams to infill a void left by longwall mining, is problematic. If fractures can be located the fracture can be sealed. Locating fractures is difficult. The non-geophysical approaches to locate fractures has been to consider the mixing of different waters, particularly that of more recent shallower groundwater with older deeper groundwater, via differences in radio-isotopes integrated with geochemical models to predict likely mixing of waters. This approach is applicable under appropriately complex settings; however, it is an expensive technique and is based on the assumption that the daughter isotopes are equally non-reactive which may not always be the case.Potentially a cheaper and faster technique is to consider integrating geochemistry (mineral weathering) and hydrogeology. The chemistry of groundwater, controlled by the weathering of primary rock?minerals and?formation of secondary minerals, can not only be differentiated between geological strata but also within strata as different stages in weathering results in differing impacts on water quality (ie different reactants).Field analysis of pH, electrolytic conductivity (EC), oxidation reduction potential (ORP) and dissolved carbon dioxide together with laboratory analysis of dissolved constituents characterise the chemistry of the water. Collection of rock samples at the time of drilling for bore installation can provide the (only) opportunity to assess the media in which the groundwater resides and migrates through. An assessment of aquifer matrix chemical makeup, via bulk sample chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and petrographic analysis can achieve this.The chemistry of groundwater is dependent on the water velocity. Water at deposition and post-diagenesis dissolution of minerals by hydrolysis and oxidation will result in equilibria of the dissolved phase with the solid phase. Post-depositional fractures caused by either tectonic activity or weathering alter the rate of weathering and thereby the geochemistry. Slow water flow in microfractures results in water in equilibrium with the rock minerals. Faster flow in larger fractures results in water being in disequilibria with rock minerals.Fractures can alter groundwater chemistry by two pathways: changing groundwater velocity, which changes the rate of hydrolysis or oxidation mixing water from different geological strata.Both pathways cause subtle changes in the water chemistry.It is however, the dissolved phase chemical data, which can be observed over time at individual locations and/or at a point in time along a flow path, which allows the hydrogeologist to ælook up-gradientÆ and locate the zone of leakage. Hence, influences on rock/groundwater chemistry, from anthropogenic sources to natural mixing of waters, can be assessed via appropriate interpretation of geochemistry, hydrogeochemistry and flow data.This paper will use the example of the geochemical and hydrogeological characterisation of aquifers within the Hawkesbury and Bulgo Sandstone of the Southern Coalfields to the south of Sydney in New South Wales to demonstrate this approach.CITATION:Stuckey, M and Mulvey, P, 2013. The Fosterville Goldmine in Victoria employs bacterial oxidation (BIOX« Process) to liberate gold from its flotation concentrate. Gold occurrence is primarily as submicron particles in pyrite and arsenopyrite and has been described as being in æsolid solutionÆ and therefore not amenable to direct cyanidation even with fine grinding. Once liberated by the oxidation process, the gold is then available for cyanide leaching. While the oxidation process is very effective, it has been found that a portion of the liberated gold can become suspended in the liquid phase in what appears to be a colloidal state. This liquid becomes a waste stream during washing of the oxidised solids and the suspended gold is therefore lost. This paper discusses investigations into the causes of the loss and also describes the successful use of quebracho tannin in reducing colloidal gold loss. Laboratory and subsequent plant trials, showed a gain of 2.6 per cent in overall gold recovery based on mill feed and waste stream data.

This paper describes the design and construction of three 7.2 m span access ramp-tunnels to the three level underground car park of the newly redeveloped Top Ryde City Shopping Centre in northern Sydney. The tunnels were to be excavated without significant impact on the overlying Devlin Street, one of the busiest arterial roads in the Sydney metropolitan area and a major link in the Sydney road network. The interpretation of the geological conditions indicated that the tunnels would be driven in a formation of heavily jointed, extremely weathered to fresh Triassic Ashfield shale with some structural features such as dyke, fault and shear zones identified in the available boreholes logs. Both empirical and numerical methods were used to design the tunnels and to predict the ground surface settlements. The design solution, which was influenced by the relatively small scale nature of the work and the current demands on the tunnel construction market, included presupport, initial support and permanent steel fibre reinforced shotcrete (SFRS) lining. The interactions of the driven portals with cut and cover sections and the proposed deep excavation of the new shopping centre were considered at the design development stage and in the construction phase to ensure the safety of the live road. The tunnels have been successfully constructed and are now operational.

The D47 and D39 Mechanical Dynamic Extra bolts (D47 MDX and D39 MDX) have been developed in response to the ever-increasing demand from the mining industry for rock bolts with high dynamic capacity. To prove such capacity, Sandvik has performed numerous in situ dynamic testing with the unique Dynamic Test Rig (DTR) (Darlington, Rataj and Roach, 2019; Roach, Rataj and Darlington, 2019). To complement the collection of testing data, Sandvik, in collaboration with the Swedish Research Institute for Mining, Metallurgy and Materials (Swerim) have performed additional experiments in laboratory condition using Swerim’s new drop test rig. This rig utilises a momentum transfer method to apply a dynamic load to the bolt. The sample falls together with the mass until the support beam impacts stationary dampers and the momentum energy is transferred to the bolt. Part of the charged energy is released by the dumpers while the remaining portion is absorbed by plastic deformation and/or displacement of the ground support element. The D47 and D39 MDX bolts have been tested at Swerim’s test facility with different levels of input energy. Six tests were performed at the specification energy of 36 kJ and six tests were carried out with the maximum allowable energy from the facility, ie 44 kJ. The bolts confirmed their dynamic performance absorbing the input energy without failure. The D47 MDX bolt absorbed up to 33 kJ with 150 mm displacement while the D39 MDX bolt absorbed up to 35 kJ with 162 mm displacement. This work will present an overview of the drop test rig at Swerim’s facility and a collection of results of the test performed on the D47 and D39 MDX bolts. The test method and results will be analysed and compared to the tests carried out with the in situ DTR.

Despite the large areas of sedimentary basins in Western Australia, the coal resources are very meagre., This is a serious problem for the State, which-at present-lacks any other alternate source of fuel-for power production.. Located coal deposits are all poor in quality and mostly brown coals of little importance. The best..coal suitable for extraction is at Collie, where a black=sub- bituminous non-coking coal is mined. Most other coals recorded are low grade or lignite, with high ash'and moisture content and a low calorific value. Coal was first discovered in Western Australia in the bed of the Irwin River, 50-miles south-east of Geraldton, by the Gregory brothers, explorers, in the year 18+6,. but although investigated, it has never been developed. The most noteworthy discovery of coal was in the Collie River, 26 miles east of Bunbury, by Arthur Perrin in 1883. Production commenced in 1898 and ever since, Collie has continued to be the State's sole producing coalfield.
