There is an apparent push to develop and commercialise "new and innovative" process flow sheets. A not-too-difficult reality check clearly demonstrates that the success rate of this push is not particularly significant and in fact could be regarded as a waste or misappropriation of R&D funding and the associated brain power. As Julian Sumner Miller would comment "why is this so?" To put it bluntly, many of the so-called innovative developments are equivalent to gold plating the dunny door - visually interesting but of very limited practical value. Telfer Gold Mine combines a world-class gold and copper resource and longevity of operation as a major gold and copper producer. Telfer Gold Mine has undergone a series of transformations since mining commenced as a high-grade narrow-vein oxide open pit operation in 1977. In 1986, the open pit operation converted from a narrow-vein, high-grade operation, to a low-grade high-volume oxide mining operation utilising dump leach processing technology. Mechanised underground mining of the high-grade narrow-veins commenced in 1990. Total recovered gold production between 1977 to 1999 has totalled 5.7 million ounces. The Telfer Extension Project consists of two pre-feasibility studies, the Surface Extension Project (SEP) and the I-Series Project (ISP). The combined studies represent one of the more significant resource evaluations undertaken in the gold industry in recent times. Geological activities for the SEP pre-feasibility study have included the drill definition of a large low-grade resource within an area of 25 km2 . The surface drilling program has completed 15 000 metres of HQ3 diamond drilling and over 30 000 metres of RC between last quarter of 1998 and late-1999. The ISP pre-feasibility study is currently evaluating the resource potential of both a high-grade low-volume and a lower grade bulk mining scenario, 800 m to 1200 m below the surface of Main Dome. 15 000 metres of underground diamond drilling have been completed between last quarter of 1998 and August 1999 as part of this study. Systems and cultures have been developed to maximise safety, monitor the quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) on all aspects of the operation, and minimise impact on the environment. All data are stored in database systems, specifically designed for Telfer operations. 3D geostatistical resource estimation using ordinary kriging has been carried out for over 220 geological domains within the 25 km3 of mineralised system. Non-linear geostatistical techniques are being investigated as part of the pre-feasibility study.

The GPS and information technology industries are now applying considerable development effort to what is being termed machine control and machine information systems, in particular focusing on the industries the of mining construction and agriculture. GPS based systems are demonstrably finding common acceptance and adding commercial value to many machine applications in industry. This has been the first step in the evolution of the information age that is now reforming mining practices. Adding the technologies of wireless data communication, modem computer databases, and networked PC's mining is on the verge of a new era in overall process management. This paper is a general discussion of what the information age means to miners and a general description of new mining operation technologies available to day from the Caterpillar technology alliance.

Long-hole directional drilling for in-seam exploration was introduced to New Zealand at Huntly West Mine in 1989. Following the success of this initial drilling program the Coal Corporation of New Zealand (CoaICorp) purchased its own drilling equipment and proceeded to adopt the technique with in-housetraining. From July 1991 to September 1992 a total of 15 455 metres was drilled at Huntly West Mine. During this period several modifications were made to the drilling technology to suit the ground conditions. The resulting interpretations of the drill information enabled reliable seam definition to be incorporated in mine planning. Since January 1993, the technique has been transferred to the Huntly East Mine to assist with seam definition for the planned development westwards under the Waikato River. The benefits of this drilling technique to coal mine planning are now well documented in Australia and New Zealand as well as other overseas countries. The possibilities of adapting the long-hole drilling technique to hard rock applications has been illustrated recently with successful cross-measure drilling at Huntly East Mine.

Industrial minerals by definition are minerals used as part of an industrial process and usually are one of a number of components, eg finely ground Limestone is an extender in the manufacture of paint. They are normally non-metallic and non-fuel, but like all generalisations there are a number of exceptions. Take rutile û a source of titanium, a metal and also the raw material in the manufacture of titanium dioxide pigment. Industrial minerals under this general definition include construction and agricultural minerals. They are included in the same grouping, principally because their sources are similar and in many cases the raw material, example limestone, can be multi-functional. Calcium carbonate raw materials such as limestone, are used in a wide range of applications from industry as an inert filler, to agriculture as a 'lime' source and to construction and as an important component in the manufacture of cement. As far as this paper is concerned I will avoid discussing the agricultural or construction applications, including burnt lime production.

Since the Eocene, New Guinea tectonics have been driven largely by the south-westerly-directed collision of accreted arc terranes with the northern margin of the Australian Craton, and subsequent westerly-directed transport of these exotic terranes by left-lateral strike-slip fault systems. The subduction of the Solomon Sea plate beneath north-eastern New Guinea in the mid- to late-Miocene led to magmatism and related gold-copper porphyry and epithermal mineralisation in the Maramuni arc and the formation of the Frieda River, Nena, Wafi-Golpu and other deposits.The development of the world-class porphyry and epithermal deposits in the Medial New Guinea magmatic belt, including Grasberg, Ok Tedi and Porgera, is localised by dilational zones formed about the intersections of north-easterly-trending, reactivated basement faults and north-dipping reverse faults related to the southward progression of the Papuan fold belt during the Late Miocene to Pleistocene. These deposits probably formed during short mantle-derived magmatic episodes in zones of regional isostatic uplift, which are attributed to the delamination of the lithospheric mantle beneath New Guinea.CITATION:Garwin, S L, 2015. Three computerised sets of minerals information are being developed by New Zealand Geological Survey in co-operation with the Resource Management and Mining group of the Ministry of Energy: 1. Geological Resource Map: a file of information on the location, geology, geochemistry, production, and potential use of individual occurrences of aggregate, mineral, geothermal, coal, oil, and gas resources. The computer program can be used for search and retrieval of information and the production of maps and tables. The data is being published as a series of 1:250 000 maps with accompanying text and tables. 2. The Khanong supergene-enriched copper resource, (~23 Mt at 3.0 per cent Cu), is one of several resources recently discovered in the intrusive-centred, sediment-hosted Au-Cu Sepon mineral field located in southern Lao PDR. The unusual style of hypogene mineralisation and unique set of conditions have resulted in the development and preservation of a supergene-enriched profile in this subtropical climate. Hypogene sulphide-rich mineralisation replaced calcareous cataclastite (fault rock) developed in the flat-lying, extensional, Khanong Fault. Spatially, the hypogene mineralisation was immediately out board of the skarn û hornfels Cu-Bi front and in board of sediment hosted Au-(As-Sb) mineralisation in a zoned intrusive-centred hydrothermal system. In situ supergene enrichment of the sulphide protore has resulted in a high-grade chalcocite-clay zone (~10.3 Mt at 4.6 per cent Cu) overlain by leached limonite-clay. A very high-grade in situ to exotic limonite-clay Cu-oxide-mineral zone is locally developed above impermeable dolomite at the base of chalcocite-clay zone. Exotic Cu-Mn-wad mineralisation developed for up to 1 km down the hydraulic gradient from the chalcocite-clay zone. Unique supergene enrichment conditions have resulted in the high-grade Khanong Cu resource in a subtropical weathering environment. The base of the currently active supergene profile coincides with the base of a flat-lying, pyrite-rich fault rock, dipping parallel to the hill slope, maximising Cu enrichment. Meteoric water has been channelled along subvertical faults and narrow horizontal subsurface zones. Low permeability of the fault host rock and footwall rocks has controlled the low volume and slow movement of groundwater required for supergene enrichment. Erosion has been slowed by the resistive ironstone and limonite-clay layer at surface, which assists in preserving the gentle slope over the chalcocite-clay zone.

Coal mining in New Zealand is principally a State-owned and controlled operation where the State produces 70 per cent of the coal in New Zealand and 65 per cent of coal mined in the Waikato. The State's flexibility in production quality and price makes them tough competition. Coal in the Waikato varies in quality considerably throughout the region making the high quality coal deposits as in the Huntly district a highly sought after commodity. The high quality of coal is often offset against transport costs as, for example, Maramarua coals can compete effectively in the Auckland market and dollar per calorific value basis.

The smelting of the Broken Hill lead concentrates at the Broken Hill Asso,ciated Smelters produced, among other products, approximately 4,900 ounces of gold and 8,800,000 ounces of silver during the year ending June 30th, 1938. The following table shows the actual amounts of gold per ton of lead concentrate produced during this period at the important mines. The total gold in the period is calculated from the number of tons of lead concentrates produced, and by comparison with the production' of silver, shows thatthere is no constant relation between the amounts of gold and silver.The fact that no gold is seen during milling, even when gravity concentrating tables are employed, signifies that the gold does not occur as occasional coarse particles.Further, as the values increase considerably in the flotation slime, it can be inferred that the gold occurs as minute inclusions in one or more of the minerals in the lead concentrates.The four most abundant minerals in the lead concentrate are galena, zinc blende, chalcopyrite, and...

An assessment is made of the potential for thick seam underground mining of black coal in Australia. A brief summary is given of the geo-mechanical environment and previous mining history existing in a number of areas of particular interest from the point of view of thick seam mining. A classification of thick seam mining methods is presented with emphasis on the critical geo-mechanical parameters influencing the performance of such methods. A summary is made of perceived geo-mechanical research requirements related to thick seam mining in Australian coalfields.

OK Tedi Mining Ltd. (OTML) is in the process of optimising the concentrator performance. One aspect that has been recently implemented is an upgrade of the existing expert control philosophy on the grinding circuit and this will be the topic of this paper. Ore grinding in SAG mills is a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) process subject to several disturbances, most typical being quick acting disturbances such as changes in ore characteristics like hardness and particle size and slow acting disturbances such as ball charge variations and liner wear. The OTML SAG mills treat ore from diverse ore bodies and receive fresh feed subject to large changes in particle size. These circumstances make these mills particularly challenging to control. In this paper, a comparative analysis is presented between the performance of the OTML SAG mill #2 before and after the commissioning of a hybrid control strategy. The strategy uses Expert Knowledge combined with advanced disturbance rejection to reduce the variability of the main process variables, especially pressure and power. It further optimises the overall operation by driving the SAG mill #2 against process constraints (e.g. high power, high motor temperature and high scats recycle rate) and maintaining the operation at or near this point. This strategy is implemented by a combination of the manipulated variables (i.e. fresh feed tonnage and % solids) at any given time.The paper will present trends and a statistical analysis of the comparative results of the mill operation over a period of months, showing a 30% reduction in mill power / pressure variability and a 12% improvement in average power drawn. An increase in throughput was also observed, but cannot be conclusively attributed to the change in mill control due to other changes that were made to the SAG mill #2 during the period of comparison. An additional benefit includes better acceptance from the operators with improved consistency of the SAG mill #2 operation across shifts.The paper will also discuss further improvements envisaged in the continued optimisation of the grinding control circuit.CITATION:Savage, C, Rodriguez, R and Metzner, G, 2013. Mr. H. W. GEPP said he desired to bring particular attention to this paper. The underlying intention of the Development and Migration Commission when the paper was prepared was to place at the disposal of Australian miners and metallurgists the story of the development of tin metallurgy as it had been advanced in other countries, particularly Great Britain. They had very considerable resources of low-grade tin-bearing metals in the eastern coast of Australia particularly, and they need not anticipate that tin was going to remain at the extremely low price at which they saw it to-day. The Commission felt that it was most desirable to place 'on record, and make easily available, the story of the treatment of comparatively low-grade tin ores in other parts of the world.Arrangements were made that the technical staff at Australia House, in conjunction with Mr. H. S. Elford; should collect this information so that in due course, when Australia awoke to an interest in low-grade deposits, of which there were many throughout Australia, this story would then not,have to be gathered from other areas and other places of the world. The -paper was a contribution which would turn out to be of very great value. He suggested to the younger members that this thorough contribution could be made the subject of study so that they would be ready to assist in the developments which must come. Mr. WM. APLIN said there was one point in connection with the paper upon which he would like to speak. In the course of the last twenty eight years the copper lodes of New Caledonia have been periodically worked or abandoned, until quite recently, probably attracted by the higher price of the metal, British capital has again been induced to embark upon the further development of several copper properties, which at present give reasonable promise of becoming regular producers. Owing to its proximity to Australia (only a three day's journey by mail steamer from Sydney) New Caledonia becomes of additional interest to Australian commerce in general, and it is to be hoped that the French Government may see their way before long to make the best of this natural position, to the mutual benefit of both countries concerned.Op till now all copper ores and concentrates which have been shipped from New Caledonia, were treated in Australian smelting works furthermore, Australian mine managers and miners have from time to time been connected with New Caledonian mining ventures, but, unfortunately, it must be said that nearly everyone of them returned to Australia thoroughly disgusted with his experience over there. Even to the casual observer, it is not so very difficult to find a proper explanation for these shortcomings in the peculiar economic conditions of the 'French colony, as many of the objections which have hitherto existed in connection with mining operations, were the direct consequences of a system of colonisation which could not possibly have been productive of better results.

The epithermal gold-silver deposits wall poster is one in a series of posters on different mineral deposit types being produced by GNS Science to raise awareness of the characteristics of New Zealand mineral deposits and their prospectivity. Epithermal deposits consist of quartz veins, quartz vein stockworks and hydrothermal breccias that are mainly hosted in subaerial andesitic or rhyolitic rocks of Tertiary age. The deposits were formed at depths of typically less than 1 km and at temperatures between 180¦ and 320¦C, although ore grade mineralisation was generally deposited at less than 270¦C.   In New Zealand, epithermal deposits occur in association with late Cenozoic volcanic rocks in the Northland, Coromandel and Taupo volcanic regions. All of the past and present gold production, estimated at greater than 380 t (along with 1300 t Ag) comes from the Miocene-Pliocene Coromandel Volcanic Zone, where about 50 epithermal gold-silver deposits occur over a 200 km long belt. In Northland, silver and mercury have been produced from hot spring type epithermal deposits, and several gold-silver prospects have been identified. Ore grade gold-silver mineralisation is currently being deposited in several active geothermal fields of the Taupo Volcanic Zone, and extinct geothermal systems occur on the western side of the zone. The active systems have provided natural laboratories to help understand the processes of epithermal mineralisation.

Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and other near infrared (NIR) tools have been used in the bauxite industry for many years. Infrared spectroscopy exploits the differences in chemical composition and lattice structure to produce a characteristic response. Spectral devices, such as those from ASD Inc and the HyLoggerTM, provide qualitative mineralogical data targeted towards hydrated minerals detected in the near and short wave infrared region. The FTIR spectrum extends into the mid and thermal infrared range and can therefore respond to the presence of silicates and oxides, in addition to hydrates and carbonates.The key to successful utilisation of infrared spectra, however, is the interpretation methodology. In this study, FTIR spectra were calibrated against quantitative X-ray diffraction data for the determination of the mineralogy of iron ore. A full pattern profiling machine learning technique was utilised for the calibration, and the assessment of the regressions determined from an independent validation set. The abundance of key minerals – hematite, goethite, kaolinite and quartz – were determined and the results correlated against X-ray fluorescence assays and loss on ignition data. The results of the study indicate that spectral techniques using a full-pattern profiling machine learning approach and artificial neural networks can be used successfully to obtain objective and quantitative mineralogical data to support field observations and analytical results for iron ore resource modelling. The central Taupo Volcanic Zone is a region of intense Quaternary silicic volcanism accompanying rapid crustal extension. Modem central TVZ is the most frequently active and productive silicic volcanic system on Earth, erupting rhyolite at c.0.28 m3 s-1. The rhyolites show no major compositional changes with time, but the total extent of magma chamber zonation has changed with the advent of rifting and crustal extension at c.0.7 Ma. At least 34 caldera-forming ignimbrite eruptions have formed a complex sequence of relatively short-lived, nested and/or overlapping volcanic centres in central TVZ. Taupo contrasts with other large silicic magmatic systems in the exceptionally high frequency, but small size, of caldera forming eruptions. This contrast reflects the thin, rifted nature of the TVZ crust that precludes the development of long term magmatic cycles at Taupo. Within central TVZ, non-rhyolitic compositions have been erupted apparently irregularly in time and space; in particular there is no evidence for a geographic separation of basalts from andesites. TVZ is a rifted arc, but its segmented nature, high thermal flux and voluminous rhyolitic volcanism make it unique on Earth.

The gold province of Otago occupies an area of upwarped basement, the Otago Schist, comprising predominantly quartzofeldspathic and volcanogenic metasediments. This assemblage is the product of collisional tectonic deformation and associated metamorphism, mainly to lower greenschist facies, during the Rangitata Orogeny (200-100 Ma). Historically this region has produced 240 tonnes of gold, 4% (10 t.) of which was from the mining of Cretaceous goldquartz mineralised vein systems. Auriferous vein systems in the Otago Schist are mainly hosted within NW trending normal fault-fracture arrays, however NW trending reverse fault-hosted vein systems also occur. We propose that the Late Cretaceous-mid Tertiary Otago Schist structure represents a regional anticlinorium containing flexural folds of at least two wavelengths. The anticlinorium structure has been quantified by determining variations in angular discordance between schistosity and the Otago Peneplain, a Late Cretaceous-mid Tertiary erosion surface covering most of the Otago district. A structural model for the evolution of the post-collisional anticlinorium requires the cooling surficial zone (carapace) of a retrograding metamorphic belt to behave as an elastic lid. Erosion of topographic load on the carapace drove isostatic uplift, which was greatest in the tectonically thickened core of the orogen. In this way differential uplift produced flexural deformation in the elastic carapace, expressed as a large scale arching of the orogenic belt. Flexure created tangential longitudinal strains in the outer-arc, leading to extension and the formation of mineralised normal faults. These structures are separated by a neutral surface from shortening and associated mineralised reverse faults in the inner-arc. Our structural model predicts that the distribution of auriferous lodes should be localised about zones of maximum flexural curvature, where the tangential longitudinal strains are highest. As a result, NW-SE hinge regions separating schistosity dip domains in the Otago gold province may have new found significance as potential exploration targets.
