The comparison between J Visman and C O Ingamells’ works with P M Gy’s works has been the object of intense debates in the past. Such negative debates inevitably resulted in a loss of many good opportunities. The author’s long experience in applying works of these three authors led to the pragmatic conclusion that it is relatively easy to integrate everything Visman and Ingamells created into the Theory of Sampling; therefore, it is suggested that the compatibility has been vastly overlooked, and a correction for such anomaly is recommended. It is important to emphasise that Visman and Ingamells works may be beneficial and provide relevant, harmonious additions in some areas, and ultimately offer attractive possibilities to sampling practitioners. Such additions may enhance our capabilities to predict sampling difficulties by using a stronger strategy and to design better sampling experiments that would allow us to further understand the heterogeneity of minor constituents, and especially trace constituents. Basically, the suggested integration is essential for sampling trace constituents in the environment, in food, in chemicals and in the pharmaceutical industries.CITATION:Pitard, F F, 2017. This paper reviews the likelihood of instability occurring within coking coal cargoes from BHP CoalÆs northern Bowen Basin mines. In coal cargoes, initial moisture redistributes vertically towards the base, saturating the bottom layers unless the bilge wells are pumped regularly. There has been concern in some quarters that saturated coal in the basal layer may be prone to liquefaction, and if the vessel then rolls significantly in rough seas, overall sliding movement of the cargo might occur. However, a review of shipping accident statistics reveals that casualties relating to shifting of coal cargoes are quite rare, and have not occurred in modern large bulk carriers (>15 000 dwt). The moisture redistribution process has been analysed to quantify the extent of cargo saturation that may occur. Results indicate that the amount of redistribution increases with initial moisture content above a threshold of eight to nine per cent. However, the removal of water by pumping from the bilges is remarkably effective in reducing the extent of saturated coal (and therefore the possibility of cargo liquefaction and movement), and in controlling the average moisture content of the bottom layers of cargo. Stability analyses were then performed for deep sliding of a cargo with a saturated and liquefied base. These have confirmed that sliding of a cargo with a liquefied base during rough seas (20¦ roll angles) would require initial total moisture content exceeding 13 per cent, the hold half full or less (width/depth >3), and no bilge pumping so that height of the saturated zone is as deep as possible. Overall, the results indicate that coking coal cargoes from BHP CoalÆs northern Bowen Basin mines will be unlikely to suffer sliding or liquefaction failures when transported in modern large bulk carriers.

There is now a new generation of mobile crushing and screening plant systems available which have been developed based on the motivation of reducing truck haulage. Newly designed mobile crushing and screening plant systems have the advantages of mobility, flexibility, economy and reliable performance, making this system very appealing for small- to medium-sized projects or projects where a number of resources are separated by distance.A brief review of the past history and experience with transportable crushing plants provides an insight into some of the issues with transportable plants in mineral processing. A closer look at a simple model based on exploiting small but high-grade orebodies suggests the concept has merit, however there are many more engineering, logistics, legal, technical and management aspects which have limited the application of such a concept in the resource sector. This paper explores the concept in detail and endeavours to analyse the preferred commodities and scenarios under which the concept could be used and the economic and logistical limitations for iron ore. The paper also looks at the risk assessment criteria to be applied in selecting the type of resource projects where the model could be applied successfully. Other aspects considered in this paper are the project planning requirements, technical and economic feasibility, bankability and operability. Over recent years there has been a significant increase in the number of miners in the Pilbara region of Western Australia targeting channel iron deposits (CID) located in valleys, intersected by ephemeral creeks and below the groundwater table. The falling iron ore price has triggered a drive to reduce cost and maximise yield. Creek diversions provide an opportunity to maximise the utilisation of orebodies and extend the life-of-mine.Creek diversions that are required during mining operations to access ore and provide flood protection have historically been constructed as uniform engineered channels designed primarily for flow conveyance while minimising earthworks costs; however, the design of diversions becomes more complex when they are required to function in a similar way to the existing creek system during operations and remain stable during more extreme events than would typically occur following mine closure, in accordance with current regulatory guidance. The design specifications for closure are often more rigorous than the operational phase, and could incur significant additional cost to implement retrospectively if not planned and designed upfront.The complexity of diversion design depends on site specific factors such as: the size of the creek to be diverted; hydrology; corridor restrictions; geomorphology; hydrogeology; geology; environmental and heritage values; potential impacts and the risk to operations and environment. The complex interactions of these factors must be well understood and hydraulic modelling undertaken to characterise the existing creek system, demonstrate the diversions, provide adequate flood protection during operations, and can function in a similar way to the existing system following mine closure. Iron Road Limited (IRD) is currently developing the Central Eyre Iron Project (CEIP) at Warramboo on the Eyre Peninsula, South Australia. The project consists of a 30 year open pit mine, magnetite processing facilities, standard-gauge railway and deep water, Cape class capable port. Major South Australian government approvals have been received and funding arrangements confirmed.The 4.5 Bt Mineral Resource (3.7 Bt Ore Reserve), the largest in Australia and among the largest globally, is to be mined to produce 24 Mt/a high-grade, 67 per cent Fe, magnetite concentrate. This in-demand, premium product has a P80 of ~100 µm, suitable for both direct sinter feed and an additive in pelletising.The extensively drilled, homogeneous orebody is unique in both geology and mineralogy; only averaging 15 per cent Fe yet coarse-grained with almost negligible phosphorus and sulfur content. This has allowed significant opportunities to tailor the mining method to the orebody, utilising both optimised blasting as first stage comminution, as well as in-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) to reduce the heavy haulage diesel fleet and optimise the pit shell.Approximately 1 Mt/d of total material, ore and waste, is required to be moved from the pit daily, introducing materials handling challenges, overcome by a flexible IPCC set-up, multiple overland conveyors and an exacting mine plan. Non-conventional waste and tailings storage is utilised to allow for significant water savings, progressive rehabilitation and minimisation of land impact.The processing facilities utilise both the magnetic and density properties of the magnetite to beneficiate the ore. The coarse-grained nature of the ore is exploited to minimise comminution yet still liberate a high quality product. Utilisation of modular construction methods allows risk reduction during construction and reduced pumping requirements during operation.This paper highlights the uniqueness of the CEIP, with focus on the mineralisation of the orebody, and the beneficial impacts this has on both the proposed mining method and processing. The correct specification and then selection of primary or major fans for an underground mine is a critical decision not only in terms of fan capital and operating costs, but also safety and reliability which usually has a major impact on mine production. In addition, fan manufacturers may spend tens of thousands of dollars preparing proposals for a purchase enquiry for primary fans especially where they have complete responsibility for the installation (turnkey projects). There are many good reasons to thoroughly and fairly adjudicate fan tenders. Shane is enjoying his new work. Six months ago, he was stocking shelves at his local supermarket and decided to make the big move to a job in mining with more challenge and, of course, more dollars. He's been through his inductions, received his training tickets and is now working in a crew of eight underground at a fly-in, fly-out (FIFO) operation. There are many more systems and processes here than in his retail job, and Shane's comfortable that his safety is being looked after. He is enjoying the continually changing work and conditions, it makes the job interesting. It's taking some time to get used to the roster and he is worn out by changeover, but he gets more time with friends and family during R & R.   Generally, the mining industry has a maturing safety culture and well developed systems. This sometimes lulls people into a false sense of security. Safety systems cannot anticipate every possible situation, nor can they replace people's perception, thinking and decision-making. To manage safety, it's critical to find the right balance between dependence on systems and a healthy fear and respect of risks we face.   As safety standards are raised, systems tend to get more thorough and complex. When a new person joins a mining crew, we induct and train them to provide the information they need. As labour availability again becomes short, and many new people join our industry, we shouldn't assume they know the fundamentals. We need to explain not only what they are expected to do, but why doing what we ask and expect will keep them safe. We must equip people to deal with both the routine and the unexpected.   This presentation explores the challenges of balancing a structured, systematic approach to safety with the need to also equip people to deal effectively with risks everyday in dynamic and extraordinary situations.   Session purpose Introduce participants to a way of looking at risk from a different perspective, as a force for change and progress, if managed well. Demonstrate that risk is something we need to engage with emotionally as well as physically, if we want our risk management efforts to be successful. This purpose will be achieved through an entertaining and engaging presentation, using photos and case studies. The session will initiate interest to explore new ways of thinking about risk and generate discussion about the balance between people and systems. What is the right balance and why getting it right enhances the safety culture, while getting it wrong can impact on safety, business performance and sustainability.

Although hosted within an Ordovician magmatic arc, the Peak Hill high sulphidation system displays features typical of youngerPacific Rim high sulphidation epithermal gold deposits. Regional NW trending transfer structures are inferred to localise the magmatic source at their intersection of the NS trending arc. Fluids have migrated from the magmatic source along NW structures and thence exploited permeable horizons, which have become silicified. Alteration displays typical zonation from silicification through assemblages characterised by alunite, pyrophyllite and kaolinite and is followed by breccia/fracture controlled sulphide and gold deposition. Sinistral rotation on the NS arc has dilated NW trending fractures to produce the WNW to EW dilational fractures which host the higher grade ore. Mineral assemblages are typical of formation distal to the magmatic source in an epithermal environment. The combination of alteration and mineralisation zonation with structure provide fluid vectors which target a magmatic source to the SE of Peak Hill.

Willyamite from the type locality, Consols mine, Broken Hill, N.S.W., has been re-examined, and found to consist of zones with widely different Co:Ni ratios. The name willyamite is redefined to include the portion of the (Co, Ni)SbS series with cobalt in excess of nickel. Willyamite is pseudo-cubic, with the three axes equal to within 0·001 A.

The recent paper by Dr. Edwards upon the copper deposits of Australia furnishes a perspective upon that portion of the Commonwealth's mineral deposits which is the more welcome because it has been long overdue. The paper yields in compressed form and in handy arrangement for reference the more relevant data to end of 1938 for all of Australia's important copper deposits 'past"and. present, and for many of the lesser ones. The information supplied 'obviously' has 15een collected' painstakingly and compiled with discrimination.Such published surveys of a national character have been far too few.The Mineral Resources Survey branch of the Department of Supply and Shipping at Canberra has been engaged for several years upon comprehensive compilations of data concerning each of the more important minerals used in industry. Presumably the results will be published after the war. The group will constitute an impressive and valuable series.As yet the work has not been completed, and, for security reasons, much of that which has been finalized is not publicly available. This makes the paper by Dr. Edwards the more timely.In the compilation of data by those not acquainted at first hand with many of the districts involved it is inevitable that, from reading of the literature alone, certain misconceptions will arise relationships become confused; and some of the more recently acquired information unavoidably fail to be taken into account. One need only compare his own impressions of a district, gained from reading the published literature prior to inspection, with the impressions later arrived at following a visit, to realize the difficulties in appraising the various features,in their proper relationships.On the whole, Dr. Edwards has, kept such misinterpretations at a minimum, which is a tribute to the care he must have exercised in analysing the vast fund of data perused. A few errors of statement, mainly concerning, Queensland deposits, have been noted. The challenge facing the engineering provider is to calculate throughput rates when faced with disparate specific energies calculated by different testing methodologies. Typically, an ownerÆs team would expect that the throughput calculations be checked using more than one method, therefore it is inevitable that there will be differences, based on which methodology is used. This engineering challenge is exacerbated by the continuing evolution of contemporary circuit configurations such as two stage pebble crushing with or without high pressure grinding rolls (HPGRs) as the second stage, or second stage pebble crusher product reporting to the ball milling circuit, etc.This paper is a companion to the paper first presented at SAG 2011, which showed that the Bond Indices are an excellent tool for estimating the specific energy requirements for semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills in single-stage SAG milling (SSS) circuits, SAG and ball mill circuits (SAB) or SAG and ball mill circuits with pebble crushers (SABC). This paper presents how the Bond Indices have been used to calculate ball mill specific energies, and therefore throughput rates, for SAG mill based circuits. Once the ball milling specific energy is known, tower mill and vertimill energy requirements can also be calculated. The Late Archaean of South AustraliaÆs Gawler Craton contains significant potential for gold resources. The main targets of interest are migmatised gold style systems of which the Challenger deposit is the best known example. This deposit is one of the lower cost gold producers in Australia due to the high-grade, low-tonnage nature of the mineralisation. Structurally controlled, metamorphosed deposit styles are also possible throughout the Archaean of the Gawler Craton, including occurrences within reactivated shear zones. More typical, lower metamorphic grade orogenic gold styles are also possible within greenstone host sequences identified in the central and southern parts of the Gawler Craton.

The REFLUX Classifier is used to perform particle separations on the basis of density utilising a set of parallel inclined channels positioned above a vertical fluidised section. In continuous mode, feed enters part way up the vertical section, while fluidisation water is introduced from below. Lower density particles are conveyed upwards and collected in an overflow stream, while high density particles segregate onto the inclined surfaces, settle to the base of the system and empty via an underflow stream. Pressure transducers are used to measure the suspension density in the vertical section. This suspension density is maintained by a pneumatically controlled underflow valve to maintain a target suspension density or ‘set point’.Previously, Galvin et al (2010) demonstrated the significant improvement achieved via a new laminar-shear separation mechanism, achieved by utilising closely spaced inclined channels in the REFLUX Classifier. For the separation of low-density coal particles from mineral matter, a channel spacing of 6 mm proved effective; however, for the separation of gangue minerals from much higher density minerals such as iron ore, the shear-induced lift needs to be even higher. In this paper, we examine the influence of two different channel widths on the continuous processing of an industrial iron ore feed in the REFLUX Classifier. It was found that when moving from 6.0 mm to 3.0 mm channels, the ability of the system to reject coarser gangue material and retain finer high density material across a particle size range from 0.125 to 1.0 mm was increased, resulting in a higher grade product.CITATION:Hunter, D M, Zhou, J, Iveson, S M and Galvin, K P, 2017. The rapid advance in the adaptation of scientific knowledge to the treatment of ores, resulting in improved chemical and metallurgical processes, has enormously increased the possibility of working lodes profitably, which a few years ago were passed over as unpayable. By the discovery of chlorination, and later of "Cyanidation," by the highly improved methods of concentration, and by the rapid advance in our knowledge of smelting (for which we are greatly indebted to Americanmetallurgists), and by the gradual replacement of scientifing principles and enlightened management, for rule-of-thumb methods formerly in vogue, many large low grade bodies have been opened, and are now paying dividends, which were,twenty years ago, looked upon as hopelessly unpayable. It has been more especially in these large low grade ore bodies, that modern methods have been benefical; for small lodes must be rich to pay at all, as they cannot be worked on the same gigantic scale, but even in these a percentage of metal is saved which formerly was absolutely lost.To make these large deposits remunerative it is, however necessary to try and find the point of greatest economic advantage, to handle the ore in vast quantities, to erect huge plats to treat it, to substitute automatic appliances for hand labour as far as possible, and to combine several processes supplementary to one another, so that ore which is not amenable to one process, shall be saved, by another; and by doing...

Every automatic citizen is an automatic recipient of a miner's right under the present Mining Act (Chapter 195), but this alone does not entitle any automatic citizen to mine for minerals on any land, even his customary group's land. Without complying with requirements of the Mining Act, any automatic citizen who engages in mining solely on the basis of a miner's right would be mining illegally. He would also be engaged in illegal mining if he mines on customary or other non-government land. Even if mining is legally pursued by an automatic citizen, he does not acquire ownership of minerals without first making the required royalty payments to the State.

Due to the steep geo-thermal gradient in Bowen Basin area, as underground coalmines reach increased depths of extraction, the Bulk Air Cooling (BAC) requirements will increase as opposed to cooling the workplace using the ventilation means alone. One such mine has already been using a 4 MW surface BAC plant for the last six years to manage the working temperatures with reduced cooling efficiency as the mine expands. Due to the horizontal nature of the longwall mine layout, distances from the working face to intake shafts are rapidly expanding to over 6 km as opposed to the vertical mine layout of a hard rock mine. To improve the positional cooling efficiency, reduced panel pressure differentials, improved rib emission gas management, and intake dust management, small diameter intake shafts were located on the inbye end of production panels and halfway up the development panels with localised mobile small BAC plants. Atlas Copco Construction and Mining Australia identified a number of issues in regard to the skill levels, labour turnover and productivity of our service technicians. In 1994 we were experiencing a labour turnover rate of 42 per cent per annum amongst our technicians. Exit interviews were held with each individual and one of the major areas of dissatisfaction was the degree of product training provided on our equipment, compared to what is required to be competent across the range of our products. These tradespersons were prepared to accept the reduced remuneration that an OEM offers, for the benefit of comprehensive, professional training that, in theory, could be provided. The truth is that we were achieving approximately 40 per cent of our target for training hours because of the demands of field service, pre-deliveries, etc. So, the summary was the same as the industry was experiencing at that time because of skilled labour shortages, production demands, etc people were employed and thrown in at the deep end. A recipe for failure that will be successful every time.

The Plumduff sinter occurs at Whenuaroa, near Puhipuhi, approximately 30 km north of Whangarei. It is one of three residual sinters in the southern portion of a mid- to late-Pliocene geothermal system. The deposit consists of many large sinter breccia boulders, including rudrocks (coarse breccias), scattered around the flanks and summit of the small conical hill of Plumduff. Three types of sinter breccia occur: (i) rudrocks consisting of large, angular to sub-angular clasts of layered sinter up to 0.8 m across, as well as smaller clasts of sinter (20 - 100 mm dia), and fragments of stromatolitic structures; all clasts are supported in a matrix of microcrystalline, transparent to translucent to milky quartz; (ii) fragments of layered angular to irregularly mottled sinter of white to grey or bluish hue supported in a translucent to opaque silica matrix; (iii) smaller, matrix-supported breccias with clasts both partially surrounded and/or penetrated, by a clay-like weathering rind, and sinter conglomerates with rounded to oblate clasts. Three principal types of fabrics constitute the bulk of the sinter: (i) stromatolites, including columnar, palisade and filamentous networks, showing progressive silicification, in fenestral, tufted to clotted fabrics; (ii) peloids and pisoids; (iii) plant-rich facies in which various silicified plant species occur in a silica matrix. All fabrics have counterparts in hot spring deposits in the Taupo Volcanic Zone formed at temperatures from 75¦C to 35¦C. Also present is steam-condensate-produced alteration: kaolinite and alunite as well as boulders of quartz lattice texture. Cinnabar only occurs in sinter on the north and south central slopes of the hillside. No quartz veins or geyserite were recognised.
