The Epithermal and Mesothermal Gold Prospectivity modelling projects carried out by Crown Minerals provided explorers in New Zealand with a new compilation of historical exploration data combined with new geological information from the GNS QMap 1:250,000 scale mapping project. These data were used to produce predictive mineral potential maps for gold mineralisation in New Zealand. The aim of these projects, to stimulate mineral exploration and investment in exploration, has been successful with eight new companies acquiring new tenement positions and committing significant exploration expenditure to exploring in New Zealand in the coming years. The projects were done at a national scale and consequently not all exploration data were compiled into the prospectivity models. Several of the new companies recognised the value of the prospectivity modelling work and committed exploration funds to continue the modelling process. They recognised a need to compile the remaining data and run the models again to allow detailed exploration targeting. Detailed data compilations including digitising historic exploration stream sediment sample, rock chip sample, soil sample and drilling data has been completed. New models have been completed in Otago for mesothermal gold mineralisation and in the Coromandel and Northland for epithermal gold. The new models have been compared with the original regional scale models and used to target prospect scale exploration. This work has allowed exploration models for epithermal and mesothermal mineralisation in New Zealand to be refined. More importantly this work has identified significant areas with potential to host gold mineralisation with little or no systematic geochemical data including soil sampling or drilling. Exploration work programs have been designed to acquire these missing data and exploration funds have now been committed to test the areas highlighted by the prospectivity modelling. In summary, the Epithermal and Mesothermal Gold Prospectivity modelling work has successfully attracted new investment and ideas to the exploration scene in New Zealand. The projects had an estimated cost of NA$250 000 and will in the next two years, just through exploration expenditure, attract more than NZ$10 M in investment. If a mine is discovered the return on investment will be considerably greater.

The procedures and equipment used for sampling iron ore process streams have generally improved in recent years. However, there are a number of areas where significant issues still commonly occur, including sampling high capacity streams, sample cutter design and operation, division of primary increments at the secondary sampling stage, the performance of crushers installed to reduce the particle size prior to sample division, and the sample mass that is retained at each sampling stage. These issues of non-conformance with correct sampling principles are caused by factors such as increasing the speed and loading of conveyor belts to increase throughput, which changes the trajectory of the ore stream and may result in an inability of the sample cutter to handle the increased flow rate without sample loss. Failure to sample the entire primary increment stream at the secondary sampling stage is also a common issue as well as failure of crushers to provide crushed products of the required particle size due to ongoing maintenance and/or adjustment issues. The measurement of ferrosilicon rheology and characterisation of the parameters that have a direct influence on medium rheology provide the basis for evaluating, comparing and selecting an appropriate size and shape of medium to maximise separation efficiency in a dense medium application. The role of medium viscosity on particle separation in both static and dynamic separators is illustrated using relevant theory. The primary measurements of rheology are medium viscosity and stability. These in turn are determined by particle size, particle density and particle shape which in turn can be quantified. The conclusion from the debate over the last decade in the mining sector is that, for grade control, reverse circulation (RC) drill sampling gives more reliable results due to less sampling problems than blasthole samples. However, by conducting the latter with well-controlled procedures there still exist fair possibilities to counteract the major blasthole sampling problems and achieve fit-for-purpose representativeness, especially if based on minimal loss of fines. In the present PhD study, extensive replicate experiments and variographic characterisations are conducted to evaluate the performance of manual blasthole (BH) sampling and sectorial segment sampling. The experiments were performed in Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB)’s Leveäniemi open pit mine in the north of Sweden. The experimental area is an apatite-magnetite iron ore deposit of the Kiruna type, with the demand to exhibit a maximum of local heterogeneity to allow the experiment the largest possible conclusion powers. Gathering and splitting the complete BH drill cutting cones (fines cone, coarse cone) served as an authoritative reference on which to assess the representativity of the two BH sampling methods.Results show that manual BH drill sampling is able to produce samples with an acceptable accuracy and precision if performed properly and with insight. Based on variographic comparison, segment sampling shows similar precision for chemical grades as the manual sampling, while the particle size distributions were more deviating for segment sampling than for manual sampling at the high and low size ranges. Possible reasons for these partly surprising results are discussed.For further investigation of the performance of BH versus RC drill sampling, a second experiment has been planned on a parallel profile. Mining is increasingly occurring near or below the water table. This has led to a higher rate of handling problems associated with increased moisture and increased adhesion, which lead to a higher rate of blockage events within the materials handling chain. Typically, these ores and minerals are known as ‘wet and sticky materials’.Currently there is very limited knowledge and/or methodologies for effective design of efficient materials handling systems when it comes to handling wet and sticky materials. However, there is one major parameter that significantly affects handleability of a wet and sticky ore; namely, its moisture content. Flow property testing has shown that when moisture is reduced, the adhesive properties of the ore are also significantly reduced, thereby increasing ore flowability.The research embodied in this paper investigates the moisture reduction rate through a loose packed bed of iron ore using dry, ambient temperature airflow. A comparison of the predictive capabilities of a proposed drying model to data obtained from on-site experiments using iron ore fines is made. Building on an assumption made by Hukill (1954), a second term has been proposed to account for rewetting effects in the drying process. Thermal method of diagnostic as a nondestructive monitoring is based on data logging of infrared radiation from heated surface or from the associated thermal field. Monitoring of gearcases and motors hidden faults, such as, bearing degradation (deep-seated wears and tears, fretting wear, spalling and jamming solids of revolution) is closely related to high variations in temperature. The use of portable thermal imaging devices provides considerable advantages due to: easy remote access to the unit under test even when it is operating; minimum time required to obtain information and an opportunity for a real-time diagnosis of the tested subject's condition.

The Golden Bar pit is part of the Macraes mine, the largest gold mine in New Zealand. The Macraes mine is mainly developed in the late metamorphic Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone. However, the Golden Bar pit was developed in a mineralised zone about 200 m structurally above the Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone. The host rocks are dominated by massive quartzofeldspathic schist (5 - 10 m layers) with minor intercalations (1 - 5 m scale) of micaceous schist. All the host schist has disseminated pyrite (micron to mm scale) from pervasive late metamorphic hydrothermal alteration.   In addition, there has been more localised (metre scale) relatively intense hydrothermal alteration controlled by shears subparallel to foliation. Gold occurs in three types of mineralised rock: silicified schist, which dominates, fissile black sheared rock, and cross-cutting quartz veins. There are three principal structural zones in the deposit: 1.   a strongly sheared micaceous and graphitic zone at the base of the structural sequence; 2.   a weakly deformed schist zone cut by relatively flat-lying (= 20¦ dipping) quartz veins; and 3.   a stack of imbricated schist pods and deformed silicified schist confined between two sub-parallel low-angle (ca. 30¦) shears.   These structural zones were juxtaposed during thrust deformation. The lower black shear zone has m-scale folding and over-thrusting packages, kink folding and foliation stacking with associated striations that imply west-directed thrusting. Striations and imbrication geometry between the upper two shears imply oblique thrusting that was directed towards the west. Post-mineralisation normal faults locally disrupt the mineralised zone. The Golden Bar pit mineralised zone has some of the structural and mineralogical characteristics of the main Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone, and may be genetically related.

Large volumes of tailings are produced annually by the goldmining industry of Western Australia. This material ishydraulically discharged into large storage facilities usingsub-aerial deposition methods. Much of the gold comes fromhighly weathered rock, resulting in tailings with significant claycontents. Consolidation of these materials can be very slow,particularly if occurring under the effects of self-weight alone.To optimise the consolidation behaviour of the tailings, disposalstrategies can take advantage of the effects of evaporation byallowing each tailings layer to dry before the next layer isdeposited. In the last 20 years, much of the gold processing inWestern Australia has utilised saline groundwater. As the salinetailings dry, the surface will develop a thin salt crust. Laboratorytests have shown that these crusts can drastically reduce thesurface evaporation, adversely affecting the behaviour of thestorage. This problem has been the focus of an extensive researchprogramme, with the objective of obtaining a fullerunderstanding of the mechanisms controlling the coupledconsolidation and evaporation behaviour of saline gold tailings.Part of this study involved site investigations of a wide range ofstorages to ascertain their current states. Methods of gainingaccess to the tailings following deposition were developed.In situ testing and high quality sampling were conducted on each storage and samples returned to the laboratory for analysis. These investigations have enabled full characterisation of the storages to be accomplished. Examples of data are shown herein and the implications of the results are discussed.

In New Zealand, volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits are found in three main geological environments associated with: 1.   ophiolitic basalts of Oligocene age in Northland and East Cape (eg Pupuke, Pakotai, Parakao and Lottin Point); 2.   with chert and pillow lava in greywacke sequences of Permian-Jurassic age (Torlesse and Waipapa terranes; eg Kawau Island, Te Kumi and Maharahara) and their metamorphic equivalents (Haast Schist; eg Moke Creek and Waitahuna); and 3.   with greenschists (metabasalts) and metaserpentinite of Permian-Triassic age (Ponamu Ultramafics) in Westland (eg Bowen and Wilberg ranges). The deposits consist of small lenses of disseminated to massive sulfide minerals, mainly pyrite and chalcopyrite. Small quantities of copper ore were mined from some deposits in the 1800s (eg Kawau Island from 1846), with the last mining at Parakao from 1961 to 1966. Several deposits have been recently examined for their gold potential with assays on sulfide rock samples as high as 75 g/t Au (Lottin Point).

OneSteel and BlueScope Steel have been working with the CSIRO to develop sustainable carbon fuels and reductants which are suitable for use in the iron and steel industry. One of the initial focuses of this work has been a process called steel recarburisation which is the addition of carbon to liquid steel to produce particular steel grades. This paper reports on the preliminary work and the recent full scale recarburisation plant trials conducted at the OneSteel Sydney Steel Mill.   Preliminary experimental work involved kilogram scale recarburisation of liquid steel with a range of commercial and prepared charcoal products. This work showed that charcoal dissolves into liquid steel very quickly and that carbon recovery to steel was inversely related to the charcoal volatile content. Initial larger scale work focused on the collection of wood, and preparation of low volatile charcoal which is required for steel recarburisation. Approximately three tonnes of charcoal was prepared at the Corrimal coke ovens of the Illawarra Coke Company. This charcoal was dried, crushed, sized and packaged in a form suitable for addition to 80 tonne liquid steel ladles.   The recarburisation trial was conducted over 30 ladle heats during June 2009. The charcoal was manually added to the liquid steel in 5 kg bags using normal plant practice. Conventional commercial recarburiser was also added to the liquid steel in alternate ladle heats. The performance of the charcoal was compared with the conventional recarburiser based on the carbon recovery to steel, hydrogen pick-up by steel and the rate of carbon dissolution into steel.   An analysis of the trial results showed that the charcoal performed at least as well as commercial recarburiser in carbon recovery and rate of dissolution but may have resulted in a slightly higher hydrogen content of steel. This is probably due to the higher moisture content of charcoal. The main challenges in the future include: increasing the charcoal density to improve transport and handling economics, securing a sustainable supply of biomass for the steel industry and developing a charcoal production industry so materials of suitable quality for both production and trials on other applications can be conducted.

Shifting the focus away from mining (the activity) to minerals (the resource) will enable the mining industry to stand on equal footing with other industries and will help minimise the vulnerability to political and interest groupsÆ interference.

Mining One (M1) is often challenged with the task of evaluating deposits considering open cut and/or underground (UG) mining methods. In many near surface deposits a combination of both methods results in the optimum economic means of exploitation. As common as it is to have open pit mines eventually develop into underground mines, theory associated with determining the optimum underground/open pit interface location continues to be subject to refinement. With recent developments in underground software packages, the generation of rudimentary underground mining stopes from basic economic inputs is not only fast, it provides a practical underground mining solution. The determination of the open pit/underground interface is not new to Gemcom's Whittle 4X (Whittle). However, its solution has only ever claimed to be indicative, mainly due the rudimentary nature of how Whittle represents any potential underground mining. The efficient generation of the aforementioned underground mining solution has provided mining engineers with a unique opportunity. Underground mining can now be represented within the Whittle environment to allow the open pit/underground mining scenario to be modelled with increased accuracy. Providing Whittle with the ability to now consider mineable underground stopes combined with the consideration of time value of money (discounting), has delivered a solution with higher credibility than ever before.This paper will elaborate on the potential value gains associated with improved accuracies in the modelling of any potential underground mining in the Whittle environment. Furthermore, it will explain the importance of incorporating time value of money in the optimisation process to provide a consistent solution through to pit selection and final analysis.

Owing to ongoing development of new orebodies and changes to existing mining operations, new ore types with distinct mineralogy, porosity and textures are generated as feed for iron and steelmaking. Moreover, further product differentiation occurs as fine ores are increasingly beneficiated to achieve grade. A study was necessary to characterise a suite of iron ore fines in terms of their propensity for formation of quasi-particles and green bed permeability prior to sintering. In this study, two Marra Mamba bedded iron deposit (BID) samples, one Pisolitic channel iron deposit (CID) samples, two dense hematite samples (coarse and fine grained microplaty hematite), one hematite-goethite BID samples and one hematite-goethite bedded/detrital iron deposit (BID-DID) composite sample were investigated. Both Marra Mamba fines and Pisolitic fines exhibit the highest green bed permeability followed closely by hematite-goethite fines, fine microplaty hematite fines, hematite-goethite BID-DID composite fines and coarse microplaty hematite fines at a moderate sintering bed depth of 500 mm. While porous fines generally form better quasi-particles upon granulation than dense fines, the amount of moisture addition increased due to the moisture saturation of the porous fines. As sinter strands become ever larger and deeper, it was necessary to examine the granulation performance of these ore types at a range of bed depths ranging from 300 to 900 mm. On average, the green bed permeability achieved by different ore types, decreased by approximately 7.5 - 9 Japanese Permeability Unit (JPU) as the bed height was increased from 500 mm to 900 mm. In order mitigate the effect of lower bed permeability of the deeper beds, small additions of hydrated lime were investigated as a binding agent to facilitate the formation of strong micro-pellets. With the addition of three per cent hydrated lime, equivalent to approximately 2.3 per cent burnt lime, the majority of fines achieved adequate permeability for deeper bed sintering, with the exception of coarse microplaty hematite fines. In simulated coastal steelmaking sinter blends, it was found that the overall granulation performance of the blend is contributed to by individual fines constituting the blend. Therefore fines possessing favourable granulating properties impart better granulation to the blend as a whole.CITATION:Ooi, T C and Lu, L, 2013. The Domain and Burnley Tunnels, which are major features of the Melbourne City Link Project, are MelbourneÆs first road tunnels. They are 1.6 km and 3.5 km in length respectively and are being constructed through a variety of ground conditions. Deeper sections of the tunnels have been driven through the Silurian mudstone which underlies Melbourne. Other shallower sections of the tunnels pass through a variety of ground conditions including silts, sands, clay and rock and have been constructed using both top-down and bottom-up cut and cover construction techniques. The Yarra River Crossing is a 140 m length of the Domain Tunnel which crosses under the Yarra River on a relatively shallow alignment. The crossing of the river using cut and cover techniques was identified in the early stages of design development as being one of the most challenging stages of the works on the Southern Link. The prevalence of varying geological conditions combined with the need for maintained traffic and stream flow conditions provided a demanding and often conflicting set of criteria for which there appeared to be no one clear solution. A team of designers, constructors, estimators and specialist contractors were involved in a concept evaluation and risk analysis study spanning a period of approximately 12 months. During this study, four concepts were considered as likely contenders. This paper provides a brief outline of the four concepts addressing their relative merits, disadvantages and risks followed by a detailed description of the adopted solution, namely top-down construction using secant pile walling (east bank) and bottom-up in situ construction (west bank).

Any hypothesis for the origin of the Otago gold-quartz lodes must account for the following observations. 1. Southeast of Glenorchy, where the schists hosting the lodes are comparatively unaffected by Neogene Alpine Fault deformation, the dominant strike of the vein systems is NW-SE, parallel to the axis of greatest post-metamorphic uplift in the Otago Schist belt (Paterson, 1986). 2. The lodes are fault-hosted, with some developed along steep, low-displacement normal faults (eg Barewood, Bendigo, Nenthorn), implying NE-SW extension, and some developed along low-angle thrusts (eg Macraes) implying, in apparent contradiction, NE-SW contraction (Teagle et al, 1990). 3. The mineralising fluid was of metamorphic origin (McKeag and Craw, 1989), but while some of the lodes developed in a mesothermal environment at considerable depth (eg ~10 km for Macraes), others appear to have formed at very shallow depth (eg <1 km for Nenthorn) (Craw and Norris, 1988). 4. The timing of the mineralisation is generally poorly constrained but postdates the main Rangitata schist metamorphism. It probably initiated during early Cretaceous exhumation and unroofing of the schist belt (140 - 120 Ma?) and may have continued well into the Tertiary (Craw, 1989). Estimates for the relative ages of the different lodes are largely speculative but, based on pressure estimates from fluid inclusion studies, Macraes likely represents the deepest and oldest lode system while Nenthorn (just 12 km to the southwest) is perhaps the shallowest and youngest (Craw and Norris, 1988).
