THE word "development," as used in connection with .mining, is a rather general term and in most instances must be qualified or explained before the exact thought in the mind of the user is made clear. For instance, by the development of a mining district is often meant its entire facilities of mineral production, such as railroads, towns, mine plants, etc. In speaking of the development of a property its prospecting by test pits or diamond drill borings may be referred to; or it may be the mines, strip pits or quarries from which the coal, ore or rock is won. But, as a rule, when the development of an individual mine is spoken of the idea in mind is the system of underground workings by means of which the mineral is recovered and transported to the surface. It is this character f development that is considered in this paper. The discussion will be confined to the ordinary room-and-pillar, system of mining. practically horizontal coal seams that is used in most bituminous coal mines in this country, and to only two phases of this subject; viz., what is properly included under the head of "Development"' as it appears on the books of a coal company or the inventories of an examining engineer, and how its "value" should be determined -by the accountant or engineer. No absolute rule or definite agreement covers these points, yet these questions are far more than academic. Development is often an important part of a mining company's assets, affecting the amount of its invested capital (and hence its rate of taxation under present Federal income tax laws) as well as the value of its total assets and the amounts chargeable to cost of coal and to depreciation.

The pjPocesses of polygonization and subgrain growth were followed in slightly stretched 99.99 pct A1 single crystals heated for cumulative times at 400°, 500°, and 600°C. Changes in sub-grain size and boundary angle were determined from measurements on X-ray micrographs. CAHN1, 2 studied polygonization in stretched and heated aluminum single crystals of 99.99 pct A1 using various techniques, including etch pits, Laue patterns, and a slight restretching of heated specimens to reveal small changes in lattice orientation by the direction of new slip lines. He found that kink bands, which had well-defined boundaries lying in a plane perpendicular to the slip direction (at least in the early stages of deformation), formed during stretching. Also, he noted that bending occurred about the <211> axis lying in the (111) slip plane perpendicular to the <110> slip direction. His studies of polygonization were largely confined to the kink bands rather than to the weakly bent matrix regions between bands. The minimum temperature required to bring about polygonization was established at about 450 "C. Guinier and Tenevin used a focusing Laue X-ray diffraction technique to study polygonization in aluminum single-crystal specimens of 99.99 pct purity. Stretching the crystals 5 pct in tension caused a widening of the focused Laue spots. After heating for 4 hr at 450°C, their method revealed no change in the specimen. Above 450°C polygonization was detected and further annealing near 600°C led to subgrain growth. They concluded that the orientation of the crystal relative to the axis of deformation had no marked effect on polygonization. Gay and Honey-combe4 using an X-ray microbeam technique found that polygonization did not occur in a stretched aluminum crystal heated at 250oC, although some decrease in the yield strength occurred. Coals are found in all parts of Alaska, ranging in geologic age from Carboniferous to Tertiary, and grading from lignite through anthracite. Only the Matanuska and Nenana coal fields have been extensively developed. Nenana Field Today roughly 94% of the coal mined in Alaska comes from the Nenana field near Healy. The coal-bearing horizons in the Nenana field are found in a sedimentary sequence of Tertiary age approximately 2800 ft in thickness. The sediments rest directly on schists of possible Precambrian age. Individual coal beds in the field have been designated by both letters and numbers, starting with the alphabetical designations from A to G, and the numbers 1 to 6. Of these coals, the principal beds that are mined are F, 1, 2, and 3. These vary greatly in thickness, e.g., bed 1 ranges to over 50 ft, and beds 2 and 3 to 30-40 ft.

Equilibrium distribution coefficients were determined for some monovalent and polyvalent ions for several absorbing and exchanging media as functions of pH and initial ion concentration. Among ions studied were NH4 (I), K(I), Ni(II), Ce(III), Th(IV), and Mo(VI). Absorbents used were: ion exchange resins; a tertiary, and a quaternary amine in an inert solvent; and some activated carbons. The ions studied were in aqueous HCI, HNO3, H2SO4, or HC104 solutions. The classical mass action expression proved of little value in describing the variations observed. The data indicate that the determining factors in absorption and ion exchange may be the ionic species in the aqueous solution, which in turn depend upon pH, dilution, and perhaps other conditions. Three sorption processes have become prominent in recovering values from leach solutions. These are: 1) ion exchange, 2) solvent extraction (liquid ion exchange), and 3) physical adsorption by materials of high specific surface. In the first two of these processes the exchange reaction is considered chemical in nature, and is discussed in terms of the mass action principle. The third is considered a surface phenomenon and is discussed in terms of surface areas and various forms (Gouy, Stern, Grahame, etc.) of the Helmholtz double-layer theory. Generally speaking, we have found in chemical analysis and hydrometallurgical studies that there are close similarities between the three sorption processes, and also differences which are difficult to reconcile with any of the usual theoretical treatments. That others have experienced the same troubles is shown by the fact that usable processes, in chemical analysis as well as in hydrometallurgy, generally are discovered by empirical procedures. EXPERIMENTAL CONSlDERATlONS The gaps between theory and practice have allowed many conflicting statements to appear in the litera- ture. To learn, in particular, the behavior of some metallic ions on a cation exchange resin at a constant pH, equilibration studies were made over a wide range of concentrations.&apos; Results are shown in Fig. 1 for four metals in hydrochloric acid solution on a strongly acidic cation exchange resin, AG 50W-X8 (Bio-Rad). The distribution coefficient, defined as D = amount of metal extracted per g of resin/amount of metal unextracted per ml of solution is seen to vary in a way to support all manner of reports about its behavior with changes in solution concentration. The metals used were chosen from those least likely to form stable chloro-complexes. THE statisticians had defeated Germany months before she invaded Poland. With batteries of adding machines they had proved that she was suffering from serious deficiencies in critical food- stuffs and in practically all of the raw materials necessary for the conduct of modern warfare. Their calculations showed that with respect to fats, oils, wool, cotton, hides, petroleum, iron, copper and other metals, the Reich was bound to be at a great disadvantage vis-a-vis the French and British as long as the latter could keep open the lines of sea communication. The conclusion seemed obvious-"Germany can&apos;t win." The more cautious of the commentators introduced qualifications as to the length of the war and the tightness of the British and French blockade. They also made a third qualification as to the character of the struggle- whether it was to be a war of attrition or a war of movement. But since the invasion of Norway in April, there is no longer any doubt on this score. It is a war of movement-a war in which fuel, lubricants, and metals are being consumed on a scale never before seen.

IN the winter of 1902, while occupying the position of mining and examining engineer for the Mountain Copper Co., Ltd., of Keswick, Cal., I had occasion to discuss with the General Manager, among other things, the question of the enormous waste of sulphur in smelting cupriferous, pyrite ore, and to cast about for means to utilize this waste or to render the fumes innocuous to vegetation. The decreasing rate of production of California farms, the consequent need of fertilizers, and the opportunity thus offered to utilize large quantities of sulphuric acid in the manufacture of superphosphates naturally brought the subject to the practical and commercial side of phosphates. I was informed that the company had made efforts to find phosphates in the West, without success. I advised as a start placing inquiries for phosphate deposits on the Pacific coast in the current mining ,journals. This was done, with the result that in January, 1903, from an advertisement in the Mining and Scientific Press we got track of a deposit in Rich county, Utah, through T.J . Wilson, of the Southern Pacific railroad in San Francisco. As soon as snow in the mountains would permit, in May, 1903, I undertook an examination of the property, with the result of recognizing the importance of the find, in spite of its lack of facilities for transportation at a commercial figure. On June 15, 1903, I concluded my report by saying, "This may be one of the world&apos;s deposits of phosphates." On Nov. 17, 1903, I concluded my report for the season in the following words : " I have now no hesitation in saying that I believe the Carboniferous formation so largely developed in the Wasatch mountains of Utah and the mountains of the Great Basin will prove to be one of the greatest storehouses of phosphoric acid in the world."

Three distinct processes take place during the conversion of iron ore to steel. First: the raw ore is reduced to metallic iron in the blast furnace and during this reduction certain constituents are dissolved in the iron, either through the solution of a solid into a liquid phase, as in the case of carbon, or by reduction of an oxide existing in the slag to the metallic element of that oxide, with subsequent solution of the metallic element in the iron. Thus by the process of solution and reduction, a pig iron results which contains about 4 per cent carbon, 1 per cent silicon, 1 to 2 per cent manganese, 0.1 to 0.4 per cent phosphorus, and 0.03 to 0.10 per cent sulfur. To obtain a sufficient yield of iron from the ore it is necessary that the reducing process be carried as far as possible, with the result that the impurities mentioned accompany the reduced iron. Second: to convert this iron into steel it is necessary to oxidize a part of the iron in eliminating the impurities to the extent desired for the particular product being made. In eliminating these impurities by oxidation a certain amount of iron oxide (FeO) dissolves in the steel. This dissolved FeO reacts with the metalloids, except sulfur, and to eliminate them to the desired extent it is necessary to leave a considerable amount of FeO in the metal. The reaction of iron oxide with silicon, manganese, and phosphorus results in the formation of the oxides of these elements. The oxides enter the slag and the extent of elimination of the elements depends on certain equilibria between the slag and the metal. The reaction of FeO with carbon results in the formation of the gases CO and CO, which, after saturating the metal, pass into the furnace gases. Third: after the iron has been purified to the desired extent as far as the elements listed are concerned, it is necessary to deoxidize the bath to remove the FeO, which is the vital factor in gas formation as the steel solidifies.

THE Iron and Steel Division, A.I.M.E., is unique in this country in that it serves all phases of the iron and steel industries. Through its publications, its meetings, and its sponsorship of new technical developments in the industries, it has proved of great value. The various technical committees of the Division are the nucleus around which this service can be developed. The Blast Furnace and Raw Materials Committee has done excellent work. The need for beneficiation of iron ores is increasing and the economics of this operation are developing more and more in favor of increased activities. Ores that are slightly undergrade should be concentrated up to grade to supplant the present practice of mixing with higher-grade ores to bring up the average composition. Marginal ores that are not now being mined, or that are being mined and piled for future use, should be concentrated. The development of the use of sinter in the blast furnace, because of the elimination of fines, the advantage of better sizing of the charge, the resulting reduction of coke consumption, and increased output of pig iron per furnace, will make concentration and sintering become practical ahead of its natural time.

INTRODUCTION. IN considering the magnificent success of Mr. Gayley&apos;s Bold experiment of applying dry blast to the blast-furnace, whereby , saving of 20 per cent. of fuel per ton of iron is effected, the question arises whether, still further economy in fuel is possible, and, if so, how it is to be attained? The manner in which the heat generated in the furnace is utilized in the production of pig-iron may be determined, by the method of Bell and Gruner, for any furnace for which the necessary data are obtainable ; and the study of the operation,. tinder various conditions, of a number of furnaces, for which such information has been worked out., should enable us to form some conclusion on the subject. The tables and calculations given below cover the operations of several furnaces reported in our Transactions; also the two furnaces using natural and dry blast in ,Mr. Gayley&apos;s experiment, for which the heat-equation has been worked out by Prof. Joseph W. Richards in his admirable discussion&apos; of Mr. Gayley&apos;s paper, The Application of Dry Air Blast to the Manufacture of Iron, and, finally, various hypothetical furnaces.. The full list is as follows : A. Isabella furnace, with natural blast. B. Isabella furnace, with dry blast. The data stated. for A and B in Table III. are those given by Professor Richards; except that the heat-units are given for one unit of iron instead of 100 units, and some items of heat supplied, as stated by Richards, have been subdivided, the total being the same as given by Richards. An equation derived from first-order kinetics and accounting for return from froth to pulp has correlated continuous flotation data. The concentration of floatable material in the pulp can be altered either by changing the feed concentration or the feed rate. The latter does not affect the flotation rate constant, the froth to pulp return constant, and the concentration of non-floatable material in both the pulp and concentrate. Both the return constant and the concentration of non-floatable material in the pulp are directly proportional to the feed concentration, while the concentration of non-floatable material in the concentrate is related to the feed concentration. The investigation of the froth flotation process by continuous test methods, previously used by Brown and smith,1 Jowett and Safvi2 and Jowett and West,3 is being continued. Recent tests, primarily concerned with flotation cell design, have yielded kinetic data suitable for testing an equation proposed by Arbiter and Harris4 which postulates that a flotation process is defined by two rate constants: 1) the rate constant for mass transfer from pulp to froth. Previous workers have regarded this as the flotation rate constant. 2) the rate constant for mass transfer from froth to pulp, which has previously been ignored. THEORY Under continuous flow conditions at the steady state in Fig. 1 the equation developed4 is Symbols are defined in Table I. PLANS are now well advanced for the joint meeting of the Institute and over a dozen other engineering societies in Chicago during the week beginning June 26: Engineers&apos; Week at A Century of Progress. All engineers planning to visit the Fair will find it to their advantage to be present at this time so far as the Chicago attractions are concerned, and Eastern members will also have the advantage of special transportation arrangements on June 24 and 25. The tentative program is given at the bottom of the next page. Monday morning, June 26, will be reserved for registration of members and guests and the Woman&apos;s Auxiliary at the Stevens Hotel, where special rooms will be provided. A luncheon will also be served there, and in the afternoon, a technical session on nonmetallics. Instead of having the big family dinner that evening at the Stevens, as at first proposed, the local committee has planned to have it at the Fair Grounds, where special facilities have been arranged. A meeting of the Board of Directors and a few invited guests will precede the dinner. All members and guests are likely to be interested in visiting the Museum of Science and Industry, so that will be the sole event on the program for Tuesday morning, June 27. The big attraction there at present is the model coal mine, the first operative coal mine ever built for exhibit purposes. It is based on the Deutsches Museum mine at Munich, but goes far beyond that in realism, and takes the visitor on an extended tour underground. It shows him in half an hour more types of modern mining machinery and coal geology than he would be likely to see in a week&apos;s underground study in the coal fields. The Institute members will be the first group to go through this mine.

A mathematical model has been used to investigate crossflow effects in a stratified reservoir during an idealized displacement process. A process in which one incompressible fluid displaces completely another incompressible fluid of the same density and viscosity was considered. The reservoir was assumed to be composed of homogeneous layers which are discrete but interconnected. Approximate five-spot flow geometry was simulated by arranging two pie-shaped cylindrical (two-dimensional) wedges in series. Some of the common production methods rely, for their effectiveness, on the fact that the formation consists of isolated strata. This is particularly true of selective plugging and single-zone production-injection methods. The effectiveness of these techniques for several cases in which adjacent strata are in communication has been evaluated. The usual production-injection schemes for fluid injection processes involve using the same completion interval in both the production and the injection wells. The efficiency of this, as well as alternative productioz-injection procedures has been examined for some cases involving communicating strata. INTRODUCTION The performance of many fluid injection projects is marred by early breakthrough and by production of a high percentage of the displacing phase after breakthrough. This channeling effect, if it occurs in reservoirs which have large permeability variations, is often explained on the basis of a model composed of discrete, isolated strata. Corrective or preventive measures based on this same model are also common. The behavior of stratified models has been the subject of considerable study. An excellent review of the early literature was given by Seba.1 Studies of the depletion performance have since been made for continuous, unrestricted communication between strata2-4 and for production from one permeable bed in continuous but restricted communication with an adjacent permeable bed.5,6 Model studies of displacement processes in stratified systems with crossflow also have been reprted.7-12 Finally, methods which account for crossflow have been developed for computing displacement behavior in stratified systems.13,14 Most methods for controlling or preventing channeling involve some change in the interval open to production and/or injection. Although many variations of the selective completion problem have been studied in regard to the depletion of a reservoir, little attention has been given to the behavior of a displacement process under similar conditions. Sebal used a resistance network model to study the performance of a process in which one incompressible fluid displaces an identical fluid from a linear, stratified reservoir. He investigated the possibility of improving the vertical coverage by limiting the completion interval of the production well. This investigation deals with techniques in which selective completion of the production and/or the injection wells is used in an attempt to control channeling. At one extreme, selective plugging and single-zone isolation (assuming perfect execution) should be successful if the reservoir is actually made up of independent strata. At the other extreme, they can hardly be expected to be successful if the channeling is caused by a mechanism in which stratification effects are negligible even though there are extreme variations in the formation permeability and/or the injectivity profile of the wells is not uniform. By contrast, it is difficult to anticipate the effect that the amount of communication between the beds of a stratified system will have on the efficiency of selective completion techniques. The objective of this study is the quantitative determination of the effect of communication on the behavior of some particular stratified systems which will at least lead to qualitative conclusions.

The chief use of scrapers at this mine has been on lead ore of milling grade, clean and dry, in stulled stopes, 50-100 ft. long, 5-12 ft. high, and pitching 20-30°. Scrapers have also been used to fill these stopes with waste. The first scraper used (Fig. 1) is modified from a Cleveland-Cliffs design, being only 30 in. wide. It is light, weighing but 95 lb., handles well, and-digs itself in; but it spills part of its load on a long haul. It could be improved by lengthening the side plates, but because of the double bent angle irons, it is difficult to make at mine shops and has been discarded. OUTCROPS of gypsum rock near the present site of the city of Gland Rapids, Mich., were known to fur traders early in the nineteenth century. However, the deposits seemed without value and were not worked for some time. So far as cat1 be learned, Michigan gyp- sum was first used by a plasterer who settled in Grand Rapids in 1834 as a member of its fourteenth white family. In building a house for one of the early traders, be used some otnamental stucco mouldings manufactured from the local gypsum deposits for decorations in the gables and around some circular windows. The gypsum was broken out with a hammer, ground in an Indian corn mill, and burlled in a caulclron kettle,. After two attempts, the ornaments were successfully set, and remained on the house until it was destroyed by fire in 1850.

The strain hardening associated with the creep of magnesium single crystals at room temperatu.Je was investigated by shear tests in which the direction of stressing was reversed a number of times after creep in a <100> direction. The strain hardening was strongly anisotropic; the largest amount occurring in the direction of flow and the least 180 deg to this. The time law for creep changed from a parabolic type to logarithmic for the first and subsequent reversals of stress. For a given stress the creep strain decreased significantly for the first and second reversals and then only slightly for subsequent reversals. The logarithmic creep constant a changed in a similar manner. A linear relationship was observed between the creep strain for a given reversal and the stress. The slope for the third reversal yielded a strain hardening coefficient 12 to 16 times greater than that observed for unidirectional flow. Al-though no recovery was observed upon resting at room temperature, the hardening resulting from stress reversals could be completely removed by heating to 450" C. PREVIOUS work1.&apos; indicated that the creep rate of magnesium single crystals tested in the temperature range of 78" to 364°K decreased with time. This was attributed to an increase in internal stress resulting from an accumulation of dislocations at internal obstacles. The object of the present investigation was to further evaluate the nature of this hardening by conducting tests in which the direction of stressing is changed after previous creep in shear in a given slip direction. Previous to 1950 three investigations indicated that a Bauschinger effect3 occurred for single crystals as well as polycrystals brass in tension compression,

THE use of filling in mines is less common in the United States than it is in Europe, where in some places it is required by law. In most cases the filling is placed by hand, and the material used for this purpose is the waste from development and that sorted from the ore in the stopes. When these sources provide an insufficient supply, additional rock must be quarried on surface or mined underground, or some other material :st be used. In different parts of the world sand, clay, gravel, culm, nulated slag, mill tailings, and even ashes, have been used as filling material in place of or in conjunction with rock. Of all the materials used for filling the best is probably clean sand. Gravel, finely crushed rock, granulated slag and coarse mill tailings are almost as good, and the methods used for placing and confining sand will apply equally well to any of these. The advantages of sand are its comparatively slight compressibility and the ease, economy and convenience with which it may be placed. On account of the voids, which necessarily occur in fills made of coarse waste, such fills will compress 10 to 25 per cent before they develop their full strength, whereas clean sand seldom compresses more than 5 per cent. Sand is especially desirable when practically complete filling is required, and sand derived from mill tailings, especially when not thoroughly cleaned, has been remarkably effective in sealing off and extinguishing mine fires. When natural sand is available on surface, or when it can be obtained from the mill tailings or tailings dump, the cost of using this material for fill will probably be considerably less than that of rock. In this paper it is not proposed to discuss all methods of filling, butt to describe some of the methods used for placing sand fill and to make a brief comparison of their merits.
