This paper presents a review and analysis of a highly stratified Burbank sand waterflooding project in Osage County, Okla. Permeability values in this reservoir range from less than 0.1 md to nearly 3 darcys, and 90 percent of the permeability capacity is contained in approximately 26 percent of the reservoir volume. To date, the project has recovered 103 bbl/flood-acre-ft since waterflood initiation, which represents 50 percent of the total preflood cumulative and 12 percent of the original stock-tank oil in place (OSTOIP). The outstanding feature of this project has been the economical recovery of a sizable quantity of oil at water-oil ratios higher than those normally considered prohibitive. Nearly 70 percent of the recovery to date has been achieved at water-cut values greater than 95 percent. An ultimate waterflood recovery of 138 bbl/flood-acre-ft, or 67 percent of the preflood recovery and 16 percent of the OSTOIP, is predicted. The ultimate primary and secondary recovery will be 302 bbl/acre-ft and approximutely 40 percent of the OSTOIP. The actual performance is compared with the predicted performance by both the Stiles and the Dykstra-Parsons methods, and applicabiliry of these methods to this particular reservoir is evaluated. The performance of this project indicafes highly stratified reservoirs can be successfully and economically waterflooded when either reservoir or economic conditions preclude the use of mechanical and chemical means of mdbility control. Introduction The concept of the stratified reservoir has been used by reservoir engineers for many years to describe the vertical variations in permeability within a reservoir. Numerous techniques have been advanced to predict the expected waterflood performance of the stratified reservoir, and in most cases they prove reasonably accurate. The advisability of undertaking a prospective waterflooding project is determined, based on these predictions. This paper presents a review of a waterflood project in a highly stratified reservoir that normally would be considered a marginal prospect, at best, when evaluated with any prediction technique properly adjusted for reservoir conditions. This kind of project can be successful if the predictions are used to design a waterflooding system capable of economically recovering an oil cut of 1 to 2 percent. Experience gained in the early stages of the project's development was profitably applied in the later development of the entire reservoir and could prove beneficial to other projects with similar reservoir stratification or fracture characteristics. The East Burbank pool waterflooding operations have been developed in three separate stages, each of which has been a separate project: Mid-Burbank Unit, Flood A, and Stanley Waterflood. When referred to collectively, these projects will be called the Composite Project. The Skelly Oil Co.'s Barber lease — the only portion of the pool not included in the three projects — is operated as a separate facility with a cooperative injection-well agreement. It contains less than 80 productive acres and would not significantly affect the over-all performance picture.

The geological mapping of Lincoln and Flathead Counties was a five-year project undertaken by the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology. This paper, written by the Project Geologist of the survey, is primarily concerned with the stratigraphy of the Belt rocks encountered in mapping. Lincoln and Flathead Counties of northwestern Montana are underlain by sedimentary rocks of the Belt Series of Precambrian age. In only a very small part of the area, near Libby and Troy, have economic mineral deposits been worked with any success. Most of the area has been inadequately mapped as to geology. The region is crossed by the Great Northern Railway and served by the Pacific Power and Light Co.; officials of these two companies believed that with better geologic maps, prospecting might be stimulated and lead to the discovery of mineral resources that would contribute to new economic development within the area. A cooperative mapping agreement was proposed jointly by the two companies to the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology in May 1958, and thus was born the Kootenai-Flathead five-year project. The dual objectives of this project are: 1) the possible location of mineral deposits of economic value, and 2) the ''stimulation of prospecting exploration" by others. This was to be achieved by geologic mapping of some 6800 sq miles and by establishing a field office in Kalispell where prospectors could come to have their rocks and minerals identified and receive geological advice on their problems. This writer has finished four field seasons as Project Geologist and thus became familiar with the Belt section in the Libby, Yaak River, Ural, Thompson Lakes, Pleasant Valley, and Stryker quadrangles (see Fig. 1). Progress on the project is given in annual reports issued by the Bureau.* This *Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology, Bulletins 12 (1959), 17 (1960), and 23 (1961). paper is concerned essentially with the stratigraphy of the Belt rocks so far encountered in mapping. PREVIOUS WORK IN THE AREA Willis28 made the first study of the stratigraphy and structure in the Lewis and Livingston Ranges of Glacier Park just east of the project area. In 1904, Daly made a study of the Belt rocks of the 49th parallel, using the names from bottom up, Creston, Kitchener, Moyie, and Gateway, for rocks ranging in age from that of Prichard to that of basal Missoula group. Walcott26 studied the Belt rocks exposed in the Mission Range (see Fig. 1) and other areas to the south of the area under discussion. Calkins and McDonald made a reconnaissance of northern Idaho and northwestern Montana in 1905. Calkins was the first to use Walcott's term 'Ravalli' as a group name for the strata equivalent to the Burke, Revett, and St. Regis formations (see Table I). In 1936, three more fans of the same kind were installed, all as exhausting units, with a total capacity of 115 000 cu, ft. per min., and since then fans and sprays have been added as required. Atmospheric Conditions Adverse atmospheric conditions at this elevation of 11,500 ft. account in part for difficulty in maintaining adequate ventilation throughout the mine. Barometric pressures range from 18.99 to 20.01 in. of mercury; the norma1 average being 19.70 in. Air weight is 0.051 lb. per cu. ft., and humidity is low—about a 30 per cent yearly average. This makes the use of mechanical humidity aids mandatory the Year around to prevent excessive dryness of the mine workings and the resultant dust hazard. The yearly temperature range is from minus 24" to 75°F.; typically, in February 1942 the mean low was minus 3.25°F. and the mean high, 21.3°F. In August the mean low was 34.8°F.; the mean high, 64.26°F. Even during the summer month air filtration through the openings of the cave area is 32°F., owing to accumulation of snow in the glory hole and in Part to glacial ice, which, combined with a rock temperature of 39°F. on the upper levels (elevation 11,945 ft.) and 42°F. on the main haulage level (elevation 11,470 ft.], makes it difficult to maintain a comfortable working temperature. The one advantage in ventilation of mine workings at the altitude of the Climax mine is that the power required to circulate a given air volume is 32 per cent less than would be required at sea level. Problems since 1936 the mine management has studied intensively plans for providing adequate ventilation for the entire mine for its expected life. As the ore breaks into large pieces, much secondary blasting is necessary, therefore there is a considerable amount of smoke, gas and dust, which requires circulation of a large amount of air to remove the contamination, It is undesirable to use haulage drifts and manways as air passages because some would be passageways for contaminated air also, and there would be undesirable high velocities in some drifts. High velocities and large volumes of subfreezing air dry out the passageways through which they pass, and thus increase the amount of dust. Regulating doors in haulage drifts are difficult of upkeep and interfere with production. It was decided as a general principle to distribute fresh air to each working place at low velocities and low pressures and to remove contaminated air as soon as possible with a minimum of travel through working places.

THE marker movements observed by Davies, Simnad, and Birchenall during the growth of magnetite on wustite have been misinterpreted. It is the purpose of this note to correct the original interpretation. In that investigation wustite specimens were prepared by oxidizing pure iron disks in water vapor until the iron was consumed. Argon was used as a carrier gas for the water vapor and on the complete conversion of the metal to its oxides ('FeO' plus a small amount (10 pct) of surface Fe3O) the water supply was bypassed and the specimens were annealed in argon alone in order to equilibrate the wustite with the overlying magnetite. After cooling, the magnetite was ground off, a crude magnetic test being employed to determine its complete removal. Radioactive silver streaks were then applied to the surface and the specimen was oxidized completely in water vapor to prevent hematite formation. After complete oxidation the markers were found to enclose about 80 pct of the magnetite with the other 20 pct lying outside the markers. This observation was interpreted to mean that oxygen transport was four times as great as iron transport during the growth of the magnetite. The conclusion would have been correct if, as in the case of wustite growing on iron, all the iron had started from one side of the marker and all the oxygen from the other side initially. Actually a material balance is required. For simplicity, take wustite to be exactly FeO, and magnetite to be Fe3O,. Then at the start of the reaction 3 FeO + O -> Fe,O., All of the iron and three-fourths of the oxygen of the final product will be within the marker inter- faces. The other fourth of the oxygen is in the gas phase outside the marker. From the experimentally determined final position of the markers simple calculation shows that one-fifth of the total iron has crossed the marker interface, while one-twentieth of the total oxygen has crossed in the reverse direction. The simplified result favors iron transport in the ratio four to one. However wiistite is not stoichiometric FeO. At 900°C, the temperature of the measurement, the composition is about FeO When the material balance for the same experimental result is repeated, assuming the product will be 1 mol of Fe3O4, it is found that 0.6 gram atoms of iron and 0.19 gram atoms of oxygen must have passed the marker in the same direction. (This is readily apparent from the reaction to form 1 mol of Fe3O4 SFeO The total oxygen supplied from the atmosphere is 0.61 gram atoms, but the iron which passes the marker interface, i.e., 0.6 gram atoms, requires 0.8 gram atoms of oxygen to convert it to Fe,O,.) If all the transport during magnetite growth is due to iron ion diffusion, then the marker would enclose about 85 pct of the final magnetite and the original measurement is in error by about 5 pct. This error is probably less than the uncertainty in locating the markers by autoradiography. The possibility also exists that the starting wustite was not quite saturated with oxygen and underwent further enrichment with consequent envelopment of the marker before magnetite caught up with the marker interface. In any case it appears that these measurements actually favor iron ion diffusion in magnetite overwhelmingly as the factor controlling its growth, although further experimental measurements are needed to eliminate the error in material balance described. Such studies are planned.

REACTIONS of oxygen and nitrogen at low pressures with titanium have recently been studied by a number of investigators.1-3 Gulbransen and Andrew' noted that the reaction with nitrogen followed the parabolic rate law whereas the reaction with oxygen deviated slightly from this law in the temperature range 300° to 800°C. In the work reported here, commercial titanium (75 A) was used as the test material. Cylinders 2.5 in. long and 0.25 in. in diameter were machined from heavier bar stock. The test pieces were given a metallographic finish, immersed for 30 min in cold concentrated HC1, washed in water, then acetone, and dried with lint-free cloth. Reaction rates were determined in a modified Sieverts type apparatus by measuring the decrease in gas pressure of the reacting gas contained in a constant volume. The amount of gas added could be measured in a calibrated gas burette to an accuracy of 0.01 mm. During the course of a run the temperature never varied by more than 10°C and then only for brief moments. After placing the specimen in the furnace, the system was first evacuated for 12 hr at room temperature, and then flushed with purified argon five times, adsorbed gases being discharged during this period from the glass system with a high frequency spark coil. The flushing and discharging were repeated at 400°C. This rather involved procedure was found necessary after a number of trial runs indicated extraneous effects traceable to the system. Reaction periods up to 2 hr were used, at initial gas pressures of 0.2 to 0.5 atm. Experimental Results Fig. 1 shows the decrease in oxygen pressure for tests at 0.5 atm at various temperatures as a function of the square root of the time. Deviations from linearity are minor and the parabolic rate law is obeyed. Fig. 2 shows the same plot for the nitrogen reaction. A definite deviation from linearity is noted; however, it is probable that the higher initial rates are caused by the presence of small amounts of oxygen contamination, the initial faster rate changing to the slower rate after about 5 to 10 min. Calculations of the rate constants were made on the basis of the latter portion of the curves. The parabolic rate law constants calculated from these curves are shown for oxygen and nitrogen in Fig. 3. In spite of some scatter the average curves are quite definite. Changes in gas pressure of the order of 20 pct did not result in a measurable change in the rate law constants. The activation energy for the oxygen reaction was calculated to be 47,400 cal per mol (above 700°C), which is not in agreement with the value quoted by Gulbransen and Andrew' for lower temperatures, their value being 26,000 cal below 600°C. MAGNESIUM alloys containing rare earth metals have received considerable attention during the past several years because of the need for light alloys having high strength and creep resistance at elevated temperatures. Although much of the work reported earlier has dealt with alloys containing Mischmetal, it has been shown in two previous papersl, V hat distinctly different effects are produced by various rare earth metals and rare earth metal mixtures on the properties of magnesium. For example, much higher strengths are obtained in magnesium alloys containing didym-ium (essentially neodymium plus praseodymium) than in alloys made with Mischmetal, which contains all the rare earth metals in the proportions in which they occur naturally in the monazite ore. Mg-rare earth metal alloys are characterized by a relatively coarse grain size, which greatly impairs castability. The addition of zirconium as a second alloying ingredient has been shown8,7 to refine the grain size, which also produces a distinct improvement in the strength properties. Certain Mg-Mischmetal-Zr and Mg-Mischmetal-Zn-Zr alloy compositions which are currently being produced commercially have been discussed in dytail by Nelson and Strieter,8,4 who also present some in- formation on a Mg-low Ce-Mischmetal-Zr alloy, and by Nelson.8 A patent issued to Jessup, Emley, and Fisher9 emphasizes the superiority of Mg-didymium-Zn-Zr alloys over the corresponding alloys made with Mischmetal. The purpose of this paper is to present the results of an extensive investigation concerned with the effect of increasing amounts of zirconium on magnesium sand casting alloys containing several different rare earth metal mixtures in varying amounts. The effect of the addition of zinc to some of these alloys is also being reported. Preparation and Testing of Alloys The alloys studied in this investigation were prepared in small laboratory melts according to the melting procedures described by Nelson1" as the Crucible Method. Electrolytic magnesium having the composition shown in Table I was used as the starting material. The rare earth metal alloying ingredients used in preparing these alloys were essentially of the compositions listed in Table 11. Some of the didymium-containing alloys were prepared using a Mg-didymium hardener. The rare earth metal content of this hardener analyzed 1.2 pct Ce, 10.4 pct Pr, 80.8 pct Nd, and 7.6 pct La. The zirconium was added in one of three forms: 1) as sponge zirconium obtained from the Bureau of Mines; 2) as a fused salt consisting of 50 pct ZrCl, and 50 pct alkali chlorides from which the zirconium is reduced by the magnesium; or 3) as a Mg-Zr hardener. INTRODUCTION In this paper we present preliminary results of a research program in site characterization methodology. We are interested in under- standing the response of discontinuous rock to mechanical, hydrologic, and thermal loadings. To carry out such a study we selected a field site with simple geology, uniform distribution of lithologies, and easily verifiable boundary conditions on temperature, fluid flow and stresses. The spatial distribution of fractures at the site was established and tests were conducted to determine the temperature field, hydrology, rock-mass properties, and in situ stresses. As part of the study selected borehole instruments were compared to assess their performance and reliability. SITE GEOLOGY The study area is in the eastern part of South Table Mountain, a mesa near Golden, Colo. The exposed cap rock is a single lava flow of uniform thickness (6-7 m) that rests on the clastic sediments of the Denver Formation (Van Horn, 1976). The surface of the cap rock (N. 75º E., 3º S.) is topographically featureless and slopes south- southeast; drainage is predominantly downdip and punctuated by occasional contact springs. The age of the lava flow is 64-65 m.y., or early Paleocene. Paleo- botanic evidence confirms the upper part of the Denver Formation as Paleocene (Van Horn, 1976). "Rapid-rock" analyses of core samples from the lava flow at three depths (0.2, 3.3, and 5.8 m) suggest a uniform chemical composition throughout with an increase in the Fe2O3/ FeO ratio (1.05 to 1.60) with increasing depth, reflecting the existence of a perched water table in the lava flow, To identify the rock

Single-crystal silicon films have been obtained on several natural crystal faces of BeO using the thermal decomposition of silane and the hydrogen reduction of silicon tetrachloride. From an analysis of X-ray diffraction data it was determined that the following film-substrate orientation relationships exist: (111) Si 11(0001) BeO, (111) Si 11(1011) BeO, (100) Si 11f1010) BeO. and (110) Si 11(1010) BeO. An analysis of the crystallographic relationships between the film and substrate indicates that a match occurs between the silicon atoms in the film and the berylliuni ion sites in the substrate. This correspondence is in agreement with previous work on the deposition of silicon on sapphire.1-3 silicon on spinel: and tungsten on sapphire. The high resistivity, thermal conductivity, and radiation resistance of beryllium oxide make it an important substrate material for the deposition of thin films of silicon or other semiconductors. The importance of semiconductor-insulator composites to the field of integrated microelectronics has been well-documented in the case of silicon on sapphire.'-' The successful growth of large-area single-crystal silicon on an insulator, sapphire, was first reported in 1963.1,2 Since that time studies have been made of the crystallographic relationships between the deposited film and the sapphire substrate. On the basis of the observed relationships, a model has been proposed relative to the crystallographic requirements for epitaxy between the semiconductor film and the metal oxide substrate.3 It is proposed in this model that epitaxy is the result of a match between atoms of the deposited film and the metal ion sites of the substrate plane. This match is not limited to a 1 to 1 correspondence between sites in the two lattices. Sub- sequent studies of the deposition of silicon on spinel4 and tungsten on sapphire5 have yielded data which support this model. On the basis of this previous work it was felt that silicon on BeO should also fit this model. In the present study, the choice of substrate orientation was limited to the natural faces of synthetic BeO crystals. Of the faces available, the (0001) plane seemed the most favorable for epitaxial growth. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Silicon films were deposited from silane and silicon tetrachloride in the apparatus shown in Fig. 1. The hydrogen ambient gas was purified by passage either through a DEOXO unit, molecular sieves, and a liquid nitrogen cold trap, or through a heated Pd-Ag thimble. The gas was then mixed with the silicon source materiai and passed over the substrate which lies on a spacer above an inductively heated silicon pedestal. The following deposition conditions were used: a hydrogen flow rate of 3 liters per min with silane and silicon tetrachloride concentrations of 0.2 mole pct and a pedestal temperature of 1175" * 5°C as observed with an optical pyrometer assuming an emissivity of 1.0. Deposition was preceded by a 15- to 30-min hydrogen-etch period conducted at a temperature of 1275°C (obs). Adherent silicon films from 2 to 10 u were grown on the various BeO faces. Wildcat drilling for new supplies of gas and the expansion of previously discovered oil and gas pools were the principal petroleum activities in West Virginia .during 1942. Much of the new gas exploration is still uncompleted and still indecisive but various wildcats made substantial extensions to existing pools. Out of 53 wildcats drilled 27 resulted in commercial gas and 6 in commercial oil. Four of the oil discoveries also had commercial gas. No strictly new pools of oil or gas can safely be described as discovered but several scattered oil and gas wells previously drilled have been confirmed as the openers of definite pools; also, various completions closed wide gaps between apparent gas pools already discovered. The proved oil territory of the state was increased about 4850 acres and the proved gas territory about 51,000 acres. The new proved oil reserves should about balance withdrawals and the new gas may represent a substantial increase. Aside from the drilling in four rather lively pools, oil activity was slight because of unfavorable operating conditions and prices. Gas drilling also declined for reasons beyond the control of the operators. The account of operations, as gathered from trade journals and other reporting services, shows that 797 new wells were drilled, providing 119 new oil wells with 2762 bbl. of daily new production; 536 new gas wells with 1,228,501,000 CU. ft. of daily open flow: and 142 dry holes. Also... 76 old wells were drilled to deeper sands, with 71 bbl. and 26,034,000 cu, ft. of added production. Wildcat drilling for new supplies of gas and the expansion of previously discovered oil and gas pools were the principal petroleum activities in West Virginia .during 1942. Much of the new gas exploration is still uncompleted and still indecisive but various wildcats made substantial extensions to existing pools. Out of 53 wildcats drilled 27 resulted in commercial gas and 6 in commercial oil. Four of the oil discoveries also had commercial gas. No strictly new pools of oil or gas can safely be described as discovered but several scattered oil and gas wells previously drilled have been confirmed as the openers of definite pools; also, various completions closed wide gaps between apparent gas pools already discovered. The proved oil territory of the state was increased about 4850 acres and the proved gas territory about 51,000 acres. The new proved oil reserves should about balance withdrawals and the new gas may represent a substantial increase. Aside from the drilling in four rather lively pools, oil activity was slight because of unfavorable operating conditions and prices. Gas drilling also declined for reasons beyond the control of the operators. The account of operations, as gathered from trade journals and other reporting services, shows that 797 new wells were drilled, providing 119 new oil wells with 2762 bbl. of daily new production; 536 new gas wells with 1,228,501,000 CU. ft. of daily open flow: and 142 dry holes. Also... 76 old wells were drilled to deeper sands, with 71 bbl. and 26,034,000 cu, ft. of added production. The southwestern Illinois communities of Belleville and Maryville lie within the greater metropolitan area surrounding St. Louis. Missouri. They also lie within that part of the Illinois coal basin where the Number 6 coalbed has been mined for more than a century. About half the coal was left as pillars to support the ground surface. Years later, however, damaging movements are affecting buildings, streets, and public utilities in some areas. They are generally believed to be related to abandoned mine workings. The threat of continued or increasing incidence of damage raises the need to explore other subsidence-control measures for protecting affected areas with high population density. Because of experience gained in a subsidence-control program of backfilling abandoned coal mines in the Applachian region and in Rock Springs, Wyoming, the Bureau of Mines was called upon to investigate the subsidence occurrences at Belleville and Maryville, and recommend protective measures. Funds ware appropriated for the Bureau to initiate subsidence-control projects at two residential sites in Belleville and one in Maryville. Subsurface investigation of the sites by diamond core drilling revealed two conditions that differ from those encountered at most sites of previous subsidence-control projects. The mine workings were found to be dry and the mine floor consisted of soft underclay which characteristically loses strength with increase of moisture. It had been anticipated that water would have percolated into the mine workings at one .or more of the sites through cracks resulting from subsidence. Under such conditions Bureau engineers believed that injection of mine waste by the pumped; slurry technique3 would provide support and stabilize any movements initiated by the softening of the clay. With discovery that the underclay deposits at the three sites have apparently not been exposed to water since the mines were operating, hydraulic backfilling of any type was considered inadvisable on the basis of present knowledge. To avoid introducing water, a portable pneumatic system is being devised for injecting minus 0.01 27 m (1/2 in.) mine waste into the mine workings. Machines for pneumatic backfilling have been used in Europe not only for subsidence protection but also for strata control, for reducing spontaneous combustion and methane accumulation, and as a means of waste disposal. The Bureau experimented with a pneumatic machine in the Northern anthracite field of Pennsylvania in the 1950's. Previously pneumatic machines have been installed in active mine workings discharging from horizontal pipelines which conveyed air- borne material into rooms to be filled. In the present adaptation to abandoned mines, the machine and air compressor will be operating at the surface, to impel material vertically down injection boreholes with sufficient air pressure to disperse fill material laterally in mine workings at the base of injection holes. Large diameter access and ventilation boreholes will be provided at one site for entry into mine workings to observe backfilling progress. The Belleville and Maryville projects are part of the Mined Land Demonstration Program of the Bureau of Mines. The Illinois State Geological Survey and Department of Mines and Minerals are furnishing technical support.

THE classical work on the electrical conductivity of alloys was carried out by Matthiessen and his coworkers1 in the early 1860's. He attempted to correlate the electrical conductivity of alloys with their constitution diagrams, but the information regarding the latter was too meager for success. Guertler2 reworked Matthiessen's and other conductivity data in 1906 on the basis of volume composition (an application of Le Chatelier's principle with implications as to temperature and pressure effects), and obtained the following relationships between specific conductivity and phase diagrams (plotted as volume compositions) : 1—For two-phase regions, electrical conductivity can be considered as a linear function of volume composition, following the law of mixtures. 2—For solid solutions, except intermetallic compounds, the electrical conductivity is lowered by solute additions first very extensively and later more gradually, such that a minimum occurs in systems with complete solid solubility. This minimum forms from a catenary type of curve. Intermetallic compound formation with variable compound composition results in a maximum conductivity at the stoi-chiometric composition. Landauer" has recently considered the resistivity of binary metallic two-phase mixtures on the basis of randomly distributed spherical-shaped regions of two phases having different conductivities. His derivation predicts deviations from the law of mixtures which fit measurements on alloys of 6 systems out of 13 considered. Volency (Ionic Charge) Perhaps the first comprehensive discussion of the electrical resistivity of dilute solid-solution alloys was presented by Norbury' in 1921. He collected sufficient data to show that the change in resistance caused by 1 atomic pct binary solute additions is periodic* in character. The difference between the period and/or the group of the solvent and solute elements could be correlated with the increase in resistance. Linde5-7 determined the electrical resistivity (p) of solid solutions containing up to about 4 atomic pct of various solutes in copper, silver, and gold at several temperatures. He reported that the extrapolated"" increase in resistance per atomic percent addition is a function of the square of the difference in group number of the solute and solvent as follows: ?p= a + K(N-Ng)2 where a and K are empirical constants and N and Ng are group numbers of the constituents. This empirical relation was subsequently rationalized theoretically by Mott,8 who showed that the scattering of conduction electrons is proportional to the square of the scattering charge at lattice sites. Thus, the change in resistance of dilute alloys is propor-t,ional to the square of the difference between the ionic charge (or valence) of the solvent and solute when other factors are neglected. Mott's difficulty in evaluating the volume of the lattice near each atom site where the valency electrons tend to segre-gate: limited his calculations to proportionality relations. Recently, Robinson and Dorn" reconfirmed this relationship for dilute aluminum solid-solution alloys at 20°C, using an effective charge of 2.5 for aluminum. In terms of valence, Linde's equation becomes ?P= {K2 + K1 (Z8 -Za)2} A where K1 and K2 are coefficients, A is atomic percent solute, Z, is valence of solvent, and Zß, is valence of solute. Plots of these data for copper, silver, gold, and aluminum alloys are shown in Fig. 1. The values of K1 and K2 are constant for a given chemical period (P), but vary from period to period. The value of K, increases irregularly with increasing difference between the period of the solvent and solute element (AP), being zero when AP is zero. The value of K, appears to have no obvious periodic relationship. All factors other than valence that affect resistivity are gathered in these coefficients. Because of the nature of the coefficients, Eq. 1 is of limited use in estimating the effects of solute additions on resistivity unless a large amount of experimental data are already available on the systems involved. It is the purpose of the first part of this report to investigate the factors that may be included in the coefficients of Linde's equation. On this basis, it is hoped that the relative effects of solute additions on resistivity can be better estimated from basic data, leading to a more convenient alloy design procedure. It is well 10,11 that phenomena that decrease the perfection of the periodic field in an atomic lattice, such as the introduction of a solute atom or strain due to deformation, will also increase the electrical resistivity. Thus, in an effort to relate changes in electrical resistivity to alloy composition, it appears appropriate to consider the atomic characteristics related to solution and strain hardening

THE diffusion and precipitation of carbon and nitrogen in a iron have previously been investigated using the internal friction as a measuring tool.' Most of this work has been done on rather pure iron; no effect was observed which would indicate that either of these phenomena is affected by the rather small amounts of impurity found in these samples of iron. Fastz observed, however, that both the diffusion rate and the aging properties of nitrogen in iron were sensibly changed by the addition of Vz pet Mn. The diffusion rate at a given temperature is reduced and the nucleation of nitrides is apparently changed somewhat. He observed no such changes for carbon in this alloy. Later Dijkstra and Sladek" extended these observations on nitrogen to other alloys of iron. They found that metals other than manganese also influence the behavior of nitrogen in iron; chromium, molybdenum and especially vanadium affect the diffusion and precipitation of nitrogen even more than manganese does. Their results have been verified in all essential details by this author, who finds in addition that small additions of nickel have about the same effect on the diffusion of nitrogen as the same amount of manganese. The present work was undertaken to study the effect on carbon in iron of these alloying elements. The alloys used had two sources. The material used as a "standard" (designated Fe in this paper) in the measurements was some iron supplied by J. K. Stanley, of Westinghouse Electric Corp., who reported 0.01 pct 0, as the only major impurity. He also made up an alloy of 0.26 pct Ni and one of 0.9 pct Mo using this same iron as a base. They were supplied by him in 2 lb billets, which were sawed into rods and cold formed into 0.030 in. wires for measurement. The alloys of chromium, manganese, and vanadium were prepared by the metallurgy section of the Institute for the Study of Metals, University of Chicago, by adding these metals in turn to vacuum melts of National Research Corp. iron. The small castings prepared in this way were also cold formed into 0.030 in. wires. After these wires had been prepared they were decarburized for 30 min at 730°C in wet Hz. After this treatment, no trace of carbon (as measured by internal friction) could be found. All specimens were then carburized for about 15 min at 710°C and water quenched. By this treatment the internal friction at 40°C was raised to a Q-' ~ 0.015. The diffusion of carbon in these alloys was studied by observing the shape and position of the internal friction peak at 0.9 cycles per sec. These measurements were made using a torsional pendulum in a manner described earlier.' The data are plotted in Fig. 1. THIS paper describes the results of a series of tests carried out to determine the partition of dodecylamine between distilled water and the surface of quartz at various concentrations of dodecylamine acetate in solution. An adsorption-column technique was utilized for this purpose. Ralston and Harwood, of Armour and Co., had synthesized marked dodecylamine acetate for us.' In their preparation which we employed, 0.0007 pct of the total carbon was the radioactive isotope, carbon fourteen. Unmarked dodecylamine acetate of high purity was also prepared by them for our use. The presence of carbon fourteen in the dodecylamine enabled us to analyze quantitatively for dodecylamine on the surface of quartz, using a radioactive-tracer technique. The method used was that known as internal gas counting of carbon dioxide, formed by oxidation of the amine. This method has already been described, "3 ' and the reader is referred to these papers for details of the analytical method and procedures. and surrounding liquor, a technique analogous to chromatographic columns was utilized. The experimental setup is shown in fig. 1. The dodecylamine-acetate solution was made up in a volumetric flask and poured into the glass funnel shown. It was allowed to drip slowly onto the quartz bed, the rate of flow from the funnel reser- voir being controlled by a hose clamp. The quartz column was contained in a small, fritted-glass filter (size 20 mm, C). The beaded top edge of the filter was cut off to enable the holder and contents to fit into the open end of the 30/45 joint on the combustion tube. This combustion tube is used in the analytical train described in a previous paper.' A piece of gum-rubber tubing joins the bottom of the fritted-glass filter to a filter flask, which in turn is connected to a vacuum line, or water aspirator. EARLIER work1 indicated that in rolled and annealed copper the volume fraction of the cube-texture component may increase on continued isothermal annealing. Merlini found2 that in rolled copper the well-known increase in the amount of cube-oriented material with increasing annealing temperature3 is concurrent with grain growth, which takes place after recrystallization is complete. It was found that both in copper2 and in aluminum4 the texture resulting from primary recrystallization, even if this is followed by some grain growth, may in general comprise, in addition to the cube-texture component, four symmetrical texture components of the general type (123)[412], i.e., components not very far from the ideal orientations of the rolling texture. The volume fraction of the cube-texture component increases on further annealing at the expense of these four components.' The present work was undertaken to study quantitatively the increase in the volume fraction of the cube-texture component in the course of normal grain growth, under varying conditions. Since the grain-gr3wth behavior of A1-Mn alloys has been already investigated in some detaiL5 an A1 + 0.8 pct Mn alloy was chosen for this work, in which the extent of normal grain growth can be effectively controlled by the inhibiting effect of a dispersed second phase. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE High-purity aluminum of the following composition was used: A1 99.997 pct, Cu 0.0004 pct, Fe 0.0005 pct, and Si 0.001 pct. A high-purity A1-Mn master alloy was prepared by dehydrating manganese chloride at 500°C and reacting it with molten high-purity aluminum at 750°C in a graphite crucible.5 The Mn metal reduced from the salt by the molten aluminum goes into solution in the latter. The master alloy? containing 13 pct Mn, was solidified under conditions suitable for minimizing segregation. An ingot of the final alloy, to be used in the experiments, was per pared by melting high-purity aluminum and the necessary amount of master alloy in a graphite crucible, and by pouring the molten alloy into a graphite mold preheated to 700°C through a box containing graphite baffles designed to intercept most of the aluminum oxide films floating in the melt. The melt was then solidified by placing the mold on a water-cooled copper plate and by keeping the top of the mold hot, in order to minimize piping. The 6 1/2 in. long, 11/4-in.diam ingot consisted largely of a single crystal. Chemical analysis showed that there was little segregation from the bottom (0.83 pct Mn) to the top (0.81 pct Mn). Spectrographic analysis of the ingot showed that the impurity content remained essentially the same as that of the aluminum used. The ingot was processed so as to obtain a uniformly small grain size. without banding. The ini-tial steps of rolling in the form of a flat bar and of annealing, down through a thickness of 0.4 in., are shown in Table I. At this point the bar was cut into four sections, each approximately 3 in. long, which were processed separately as shown in Table If. The table also gives the penultimate grain sizes obtained in each section by annealing prior to the final rolling of 90 pct RA. During the final rolling the strips were reversed end to end between passes. Annealing treatments were given in a salt pot furnace, with the temperature controlled to 1°C. All annealing of section "6s" was carried out above the solvus point to avoid the formation of second-phase precipitate. The penultimate annealing was sufficiently short to give a relatively fine grain size in spite of the high temperature. Section "6L" was processed in a similar manner, except that the penultimate annealing was much longer, so as to allow considerable grain growth. Section "4" was given the two final

ELIOT, the great educator and philosopher-he of the five-foot book shelf-recently gave expression to a thought I had long been cherishing as a private opinion, when he said: "It is obvious that standardization has become a dangerous adversary of progress in both education and industry." This idea must have been more widespread than either of us knew, for some five years ago a writer of verse for one of the comic papers dealt with it at great length. I will quote only a few of his stanzas to illustrate his understanding of "A Standardized Existence" : A visitor at large, I stand Beneath a standard sky- Where everything is standardized To please the standard eye. The advances in basic open-hearth practice which have occurred during the past decade have been principally in the direction of the physical development of larger units, decreased fuel consumption and increased length of furnace campaigns. However gratifying the economies which have resulted from these improvements are, it must be granted that like advances in chemical, physical-chemical and metallurgical knowledge pertaining to open-hearth practice would have added greatly to these already attained reductions in costs and it is the purpose of this paper to stimulate the discussion and study of these phases of cooperation and their relation to ingot yields. Definition and Calculation oF Losses In discussing basic open-hearth yields, the writer refers to the ingot yields obtained in the process of converting pig iron, scrap and ore to steel. In this conversion some scrap is produced. The difference between the total weight of ingots and scrap produced and the original metallic charge constitutes the loss. Basic open-hearth yields vary considerably, and while some of the divergencies can be explained metal-lurgically because of differences in slag analysis, proportion of pig charges, and character of steel made, there often remain differences that apparently do not readily disclose themselves. In reconciling yields by the usual accepted methods of calculation, one is often forced to evaluate large losses as ((unaccounted for." Such a system is prone to accept these large losses as inherent to the operat.ion and not, susceptible of appraisement and correction. It is obvious that if the ingot yield plus the scrap recovered subtracted from 100 per cent. determines the loss, a drop in yield may increase the loss or the scrap, and both contribute to a monetary loss. To be sure, one can subdivide these unaccounted for losses into various components, such as metallics in slag, free Fe in slag, spillage, etc., and thereby reduce the amount of losses considered as "unaccounted for." If empirical methods could indicate with some degree of accuracy all losses, however slight, the undetermined losses become appreciably smaller and resultant calculations will check actual
