THE following data were obtained during Tan exhaustive research into the possibilities of concentrating United Verde massive sulfide copper-zinc-iron ores by flotation. The composition of these ores approximates the following mineralogical analysis: 3 to 15 per cent chalcopyrite; 3 to 11 per cent marmatite (ferruginous sphalerite) ; 47 to 69 per cent pyrite; and 10 per cent quartz. The remainder is usually schist gangue. MUCH has been written and said during the last twenty years about the place of the engineer in modern life, about the fundamental role that he plays both in developing and in maintaining the material foundations of modern civilization, about the advantages, and also the dangers, of the machine age that he has inaugurated, about the Frankenstein problems that he has unconcernedly foisted upon a generation utterly unable to cope with them, and about the obligation that rests upon him to stop inventing machines and turn his almost legendary energy and skill to inventing institutions that will constitute a solution of the problems he has raised, and contrariwise about his utter inability to offer wise or useful counsel in fields outside the narrow boundaries of his technical training.

FOR twelve successive years Canada's mineral production has shown a steady increase, rising from a value of $0.5 billion in 1945 to $2.06 billion in 1956, and the outlook for the future is one of continued growth. A great deal of credit for this growth must go to Canada's tax policies, which recognize that mines are difficult and costly to find, and that once found, they are a wasting asset. These tax policies take form under the Income Tax Act, which provides a tax- free period of three years on initial production for new mines and, after that period is over, allows all proper expenses of operation to be deducted from mine revenue. These allowable expenses include write-off of plant and pre-production development expenditures. From the resulting profit figure after this procedure, a further deduction of one-third is allowed for depletion before net taxable income is arrived at. Tax rates of 20 pct on the first $20,000 and 47 pct on the excess are then applicable to the net taxable income.

REPUBLIC STEEL'S new iron blast furnace in Alabama, shown on the cover of this issue, is the first to be completed of those authorized by the Government last year when a shortage of scrap became acute. In addition to the furnace, the new equipment includes a new battery of by-product coke ovens, a boiler plant, a generating unit, a 3-mile-long 60-in. water line, a huge gas washer, and precipitators in which the dust from the furnace is washed, separated from the water, and fed back into the furnace as raw material. The new unit is a cylindrical steel giant reaching 130 ft. into the air above the ground level. Because of the high humidity in the deep South, the furnace has been air-conditioned to avoid blowing eighteen tons of water into the furnace daily. Designed by Republic engineers who also had charge of the actual construction, the new furnace incorporates the best in modern blastfurnace practice. Orders to proceed with the construction of the furnace were received Sept. 22, 1941. The engineering crew, which was immediately organized, made more than 1500 drawings. Excavation started the next day, and simultaneously work was begun on demolishing existing buildings and preparing the site. The first concrete was poured Oct. 7 and the first piece of steel swung into place by a giant derrick on Jan. 30, 1942. It began operating May 28. A total of 70,000 cu. yd. of earth was moved and 30,000 cu. yd. of concrete poured.

The use of economic models for forecasting purposes is an inexact yet necessary tool for mineral decision making. One method not commonly used is cyclical analysis because of its "non-scientific approach". However, under certain circumstances a modified cyclical approach can provide useful insight to mining companies. The current paper discusses mineral modeling, the type of economic models and the use of cyclical forecasting for mining firms (not speculators) involved in precious metals.

For years before the war, Coal had the reputation of being a sick industry. Currently it is operating at peak production and succeeding pretty well in keeping out of the red. But, says Mr. Weidenhammer, it will have a relapse as soon as the war ends unless (1) working capital can be built up; (2) it gets the support of the people and Congress; and (3) a truly long-range national fuel policy is formulated.

In crowding the recent mass of work on the physics of cast-iron into the compass of a short review, I cannot do better than to follow the lines of Mr. W. R. Webster's suggestion, made at the Florida meeting of the Institute, March, 1895.' The classification of the properties of the metal, and the influences to which it is subjected during the various processes it undergoes, is quite complete; and as Mr. Webster gives it again in full in another paper at the present meeting, a simple reference to it now will be sufficient. Melting-Point.—The melting-point of cast-iron had long been a subject of controversy among foundrymen. They knew that a hard iron melted faster than a soft one, but this effect was occasionally disputed, and the reasons given were unsatisfactory; but could not be well controverted. It was my good fortune to take the actual melting-temperatures of some 70 pig-irons and castings; the Le Chatelier pyrometer, suitably protected, being introduced into the interior, and the iron melted off in a specially-constructed cupola. ESTIMATION of re- serves in prorated sand fields has been discussed by S. A. Judson, H. D. Easton, Jr., and W. A. Schaeffer, Jr., in a paper that appears in Vol. 114 (1935), of the A.I.M.E. TRANSACTIONS. The purpose of this present paper is to extend the investigation to prorated flush limestone fields and to outline a method of procedure in determining the amount of oil originally in place and the amount of oil that can be recovered from such fields. Although it is possible to use the decline curves to estimate the amount of recoverable oil in certain limestone fields that are allowed to produce the oil at or near capacity production, such a method cannot be used in fields under severely restricted production rates. The problem is exceedingly complex due to fluctuation in the allowable rates of oil production over a wide range and at frequent intervals, and especially because of the heterogeneous nature of the reservoir itself. A well completed in a large solution cavity, capable of producing great quantities of oil per day, may be offset by a well of very limited capacity. Also, it is di5cult to arrive at an average figure for porosity in a given limestone reservoir due to abrupt variations in the character of limestone, in many instances even between two ad- joining wells. It is a safe statement that uniformity of porosity and permeability in limestone reservoirs .is nonexistent. It is evident, therefore, that the method of estimation of re- serves on the basis of per-acre content can give only approximate results.

A MORE complete interpretation of the amorphous theory in metals is given than has heretofore been offered. It is believed that Le Chatelier, Tammann, and Heyn, at present the ablest opponents of the amorphous theory, will not he able longer to continue their beliefs that surface tension alone can account for all the observed variations in the properties of single constituent metals. It is strongly advocated that the properties of any solid substance be studied from the standpoint of the number of constituents present, the quantity and arrangement of each constituent, and the properties, of each constituent. Each deformable crystalline constituent by plastic deformation will produce amorphous material, thus changing the properties. Considerable attention is given to the variations in properties of the amorphous and crystalline phases of any substance. These are summarized as follows: 1. The cohesion of the amorphous phase of a substance is substantially zero at the melting point while the cohesion of the crystalline phase is considerable at the melting point. With decrease in temperature, the cohesion of the amorphous phase increases at a faster rate than that of the crystalline phase; this differential rate of change of cohesion holds between absolute zero and the melting point. PULVERIZED coal was first used for firing cement kilns about 45 years ago, with such success that it has continued in general use. Based on cost, pulverized coal is usually the most economical fuel. In some localities natural gas or oil is cheaper, but 85.5 per cent of all cement kilns at present are fired with pulverized coal. The pulverized-coal flame is well suited to kiln conditions. Its soft, luminous nature gives it a high radiating property and the length of the flame can be readily varied to suit conditions in a kiln of any length. Ash and slag cause most of the difficulties incident to the burning of coal. In a cement kiln, however, the ash, being similar in composition to the raw mix and being deposited uniformly in the mix and clinker, occasions no difficulty as long as it remains constant in quality and quantity. Until 6 years ago almost all cement kilns using pulverized coal employed the bin system. The coal was dried and pulverized in a separate plant and delivered into a bin at the kiln. Thus the bin system requires driers, storage-type pulverizers, conveying systems, individual kiln bins, pulverized-coal feeders and primary air fans. The direct-fired system requires only a pulverizer and a blower. Fig. I shows typical plants. The first installations of direct-fired pulverizers were of the impact type but fineness of pulverization was both inadequate and variable. About 1927 a few direct-fired installations employing tube-type pulverizers were made, which were much more satisfactory. As more efficient pulverizers were developed from 1934 on, equipment for direct firing was installed at a large number of plants, until now 196 of about 900 kilns in use in the United States are direct-fired. Most of these replaced antiquated bin systems. PROCESS OF BURNING CEMENT CLINKERS The process of burning cement clinkers is fundamentally one of heat transfer. In boilers and other heat-exchange apparatus the area of the surface receiving heat from the gases is the best unit for comparing output. This seems to be equally true for kilns. The inside kiln surface is the heat-receiving surface and its area is used as the unit of kiln size in the following comparisons. Heat input is based on British thermal units in the fuel. E. G. Bailey,1 in his work on boiler-furnace heat absorption, has used the unit "B.t.u. available." This is the practical calorific power of the fuel, plus the heat in the air used for combustion. In other words, it is the heat available for useful work in the furnace or kiln. The unit of kiln output is barrels per hour. The composition of the raw mix, the percentage of water in the slurry of wet plants and hardness of burning all affect the output. These conditions, however, are hard to evaluate and probably have less effect on the output than irregularities of raw feed and clinker discharge and inexpert control of combustion. WET VS. Single isothermal sections were constructed for the titonium-rich corners of the systems Ti-Fe-O, Ti-Cr-O, and Ti-Ni-0 with a view to locating the shape and disposition of the ternary intermediate-phase fields for the compounds isomorphous with Fe3W3C. IN a previous note,' it was reported that a group of ternary intermediate phases existed which occurred in the general composition range Ti,X,O-Ti&O where X was one of the following elements: copper, nickel, cobalt, iron, or manganese. In two instances, binary intermediate phases occurred (Ti²Cu and Ti²Ni) which appeared to be isomorphous. The X-ray diffraction patterns of the phases could be indexed on a cubic lattice whose cell edge was of the order of 11 kX. Karlsson2 stated that the line extinctions and line intensities indicated that these phases were isomorphous with Fe³W³C and therefore belonged to the space group Oh. This author also noted that no unique phase of this type occurred at the composition Ti,Cr,O. This latter statement was accepted as true at the time the previous technical note was written.' However, work continued along these lines and that reported here has shown that a phase isomorphous with Fe³W³C does exist in the vicinity of the composition Ti³Cr³O but not at or near Ti4 Cr²O. The lattice parameter of this phase was found to be 13.01 kX. Metallographic examination of both as-cast and annealed specimens of these supposed ternary oxide phases disclosed structures which were far from single phase in many instances. It was considered a point of some interest to locate more positively the composition coordinates of the single-phase fields. To this end, single isothermal sections for the systems Ti-Fe-O (1000°C), Ti-Cr-0 (1000°C), and Ti-Ni-0 (900"C) were constructed. Phase relationships were studied by both X-ray diffraction and metallotrra~hic methods. Allovs were prepared as 10 g buttons by melting in a noncon-sumable electrode, water-cooled copper crucible arc-melting furnace using a helium atmosphere. Oxygen was introduced quantitatively by the use of weighed amounts of TiO² or TiO. Iodide titanium and the purest available alloying metals were used. All results are discussed in terms of the nominal composition of the melts. Previous experience with making oxygen-rich alloys had shown that oxygen losses were not significant if a homogeneous melt was produced. Weight-loss measurements were used to check loss in metallics during melting. Anneals were conducted in evacuated Vycor bulbs, and annealing times ranged from 24 hr at 1000 °C to 48 hr at 900°C. To achieve equilibrium in certain sluggish alloys, seven-day anneals were used. Debye-Scherrer powder patterns were taken in a 14 cm diam camera using filtered CuK radiation (K² = 1.541232 kX; K., = 1.53739 kX). Specimens were prepared by crushing and screening previously annealed buttons. In general, the X-ray diffraction results were used to identify the major phases, while the metallographic examinations were more useful in indicating the number of phases present. By the use of the combined results and general fundamental rules governing ternary equilibrium, it was possible to construct isothermal sections in good detail. In some instances where auxiliary lattice-parameter data were available, it was possible to lay down tie lines and to locate more positively corners of three-phase fields. Isothermal Section of the System Ti-Fe-O at 1000°C The binary systems Ti-O³ and Ti-Fe4 have been published. Binary phases, TiO, TiFe, and TiFe2, are likely to be encountered in the titanium-rich corner of the system. The structures are NaCl (Bl), CsCl (B2), and MgZn, (C14) types, respectively. Although preliminary X-ray diffraction studies indicated the presence of a ternary phase in the composition range Ti,Fe,O-TiJ?e,O, metallographic examination of two specimens at these compositions revealed the presence of other phases. Situated 45 miles west of Philadelphia and 50 miles southwest of Bethlehem Steel Company's Bethlehem plant, the integrated Grace mine facilities produce 4000 tpd of high-quality iron ore pellets. Startup of the Grace mill was in November 1958, and iron concentrates were shipped until March 1960, when the pellet plant went into operation. The underground mine, when fully developed, will hoist about 9000 tpd, including development rock. The crude ore, which has an iron content of approximately 42%, is magnetically cobbed and crushed in closed circuit with 3/4-in. slotted vibrating screens. The ore is washed and screened in the mill and the plus 1/4 in. screen product is again cobbed prior to feeding to the rod mills. Grinding is done in rod mills, and in ball mills that are in closed circuit with 30 in, cyclones, to 1% on 100 mesh and 65% minus 325 mesh. The ground ore is magnetically concentrated by three-drum permanent type finisher magnets to 67% Fe. The magnetite concentrate is pumped from the mill to a 50 ft thickener in the pellet plant. The thickened magnetite concentrate is relayed to the filters through a two-stage pump arrangement. The filter cake is fed by belt from filter concentrate bins to mixer-muller belts where it is intimately mixed with bentonite and a slight amount of water for moisture control. The fluffed concentrate then drops into balling cones. The green pellets from the balling cones are fed in a prescribed feed pattern to shaft furnaces through the use of shuttle car mechanisms. The green pellets are dried, heated to 2500°F and cooled to 1200°F as they descend through the furnace and into pellet coolers where the pellets are further reduced in temperature to 250°F. Heat is recovered in the cooling process through the use of air-to-air heat exchangers. The cooled pellets discharge on a rubber conveyor belt and are transferred to 6000-ton pellet railroad loading bin. The final pellet product consists of 90% plus 1/4 in. material (after tumble testing1) and contains 66% Fe plus 3% silica.

TEe increased use of heat-resistant alloys (26 per cent Cr, 12 per cent Ni; 16 per cent Cr, 35 per cent Ni; 12 per cent Cr, 60 per cent Ni; etc.) in recent years has been accompanied by continued demands by the consumer for improvement in properties. The manufacturers of these materials, of necessity, have resorted to more critical studies of the basic causes of variations in fundamental properties. To keep pace with the need for augmented information, previous techniques of investigation have been refined and new test methods and instruments created. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the apparatus, experimental technique and precision of measurement that were employed in the exploration of properties of heat-resistant alloys presented in a companion paper. The detailed precautions in experimental procedure essential for attainment of accurate and comparable data at elevated temperatures cannot be too highly emphasized. The Creep Test Since the fundamental concepts of creep testing have been recognized for the past 20 years, present interest is restricted to refinements in equipment and experimental procedure. The creep-test iaboratory constructed for the American Brake Shoe and Foundry Co. is designed to permit I000-hr. tests in the temperature range of I200° to 2 200°F. with a choice of applied stress extending from jo to 50,000 lb. per sq. in. in increments of 50 lb. per sq. in. To simplify the calculation of weight combinations, the loading beams (Fig. I) are provided with counterweights to eliminate the tare. The precision of the knife-edges (10:I ratio) is such that a 10-gram weight placed on the upper specimen grip will be exactly balanced by a I-gram weight attached to the loading shackle. Check of the loading weights proved the maximum error to be 0.06 per cent. Axial alignment is provided by crossed knife-edges in the grip seats. The furnaces are similar in design to those of Crane and Company, Battelle Memorial Institute, and the U.S. Steel Corporation. An 80 per cent Pt, zo per cent Rh No. 19 B. and S. gauge wire is used as the heating element. The details of -construction are shown in the radiograph reproduced in Fig. 2. The windings are held in place on an alundum tube with aludum cement; the distribution of turns is adjusted to give a maximum temperature gradient of , I°F. over a 4-in. gauge length (Fig. 3). To avoid sharp temperature differentials at the ends of the test section, the length of the furnace is four times the gauge length. Sixteen-inch coupons are used „ to reduce the temperature of the threaded joints and thus to facilitate removal from the grips.
