This Bureau of Mines report presents a computer code that has been developed for describing and testing the statistical distribution of general continuous data sets. The statistical distributions used include the normal, lognormal, exponential, chi square, gamma, and uniform. Histograms for observed and expected values are plotted for each distribution. An example using geologic data obtained from a study of the geometric properties of natural fractures in oil shale rock illustrates the use of the computer program, GDIST.

"In the development of a new product as well as during its introduction on the market, it is very important to give due consideration to problems involving patents, licenses and trade marks. At the very beginning of the research and development program, it is obviously essential to ascertain, through a suitable patent search, that the product in question will not infringe any patents which are still in force. Then, a possibility of achieving one's own patent or proprietary position on the product or the process of its manufacture should be carefully explored. Licensing arrangements that one may reach with respect to patents and know-how covering such new product may, in the final analysis, determine its over-all success or failure. If one can count on licensing revenues or some favourable cross-licensing arrangements with respect to a newly developed product, this may go a long way to achieving profitability and success. The selection of a good trade mark is probably one of the most important acts that one has to perform once the product is developed, as customers will identify the new product by such a trade mark. In many instances, successful marketing and widespread acceptance of a product are largely due to its appealing name or trade mark, accompanied by proper promotion and advertising. Once the trade mark has been adopted, it should be registered in the Trade Marks Office to provide the protection afforded by federal statute. If the product is to be manufactured, sold or licensed in some other countries, similar considerations should be made with regard to each such country."

Stable Nitroxyl polymers, such as poly (2,2,6,6-tetramenthyl-1-piperidinyloxy-4-yl methacrylate) (PTMA), are known to be effective as cathode active materials for lithium rechargeable betteries.The nitroxide radicals displayed a reversible and very rapid redox performances.We present a new synthesized method to get PTMA powder, then a doctor-blading method was used to prepare the PTMA composite electrodes, enabling successful production of homogeneous electrodes. It was characterized through FT-IR and SEM methods.The organic radical battery consists of lithium metal anode and PTMA cathode with an active material content of 65wt%.The best performance is achieved with a thin cathode that shows nearly 100% utilization of the active material (111mAh/g) at 0.1C.Through the electrochemical tests, it was found that there was a stable plateau at 3.5V while discharging. Besides, the cycling stability and rate capability were measured in detail. Although they showed a certain quantity of irreversible capacity on the first cycle, the capacity stabilized after the second cycle.

The major purpose of this bulletin, as indicated in the preface by Dr. John W. Finch, Director of the Bureau of Mines, is to give a critical review of the coal-mining methods used in the principal producing countries of Europe, to describe the reasons underlying the adoption of these methods, and to contrast them with coal-mining methods employed in the United States. The report includes discussions of various subjects intimately related to coal mining, such as geology of the principal coal fields; production and resources of the several countries; mine safety and health research; Government mining regulations; mine inspection and rescue procedure; safety lamps; fixed lighting methods under-ground; testing electric motors, mining machines, and mining explosives for permissibility; and special mining hazards, such as explosions of gas and coal dust, mine fires, instantaneous gas outbursts, ground movement and surface subsidence, and bumps. Commercial, economic, and labor problems of European coal mining, including miners' output, wages, and social-insurance schemes, as well as cost of mining, prices of coal, etc., are briefly described. It will be noted that data on most subjects are not given for Russia, which has become an important coal-producing country, owing to the lack of reliable published information concerning Russian coal mining.

A cross-discipline approach combining geology, metallurgy and mine planning, geometallurgy is seen as the next logical advance in improving the design and operation of mining businesses. This rapidly evolving field is focused on realising the value that has often been lost in the chasms between the aforementioned technical silos. When successful, the geometallurgical approach promises the ability to tailor mining and mineral processing development and operational options more closely to the characteristics of the resource with resulting lower costs (both capital and operating), improved recoveries and fewer project failures.As with any technological (or managerial) change, there will be side effects from the success of the geometallurgical approach that will impact areas beyond obvious linkages between geology and processing. Some of these effects have the potential to be beneficial to the resource industry and society in general. Beyond the basic geometallurgical promise of closer alignment between processing design/strategy and the multivariate 3D spatial characteristics of the mineralisation, this paper discusses the broader implications and ramifications of the emergent geometallurgical approach: enhancing exploration and discovery; improving project development success; achieving sustainability in an industry working with non-renewable resources; in a world of increasingly hard won license to operate, improving the management of potentially harmful by-products and waste materials (with knock on effects for proactive management of closure issues); smarter approaches to energy management and thus optimisation of projects with respect to carbon footprint; and potential to re-value assets and thus realise a strategic advantage in the area of acquisitions, divestments, mergers and take overs. The authors strongly believe that companies that actively engage with the above issues (and ensure that technical efforts in the area of geometallurgy are not isolated from the larger value chain activities of the firm) will be able to exploit the opportunities that consequentially arise. These early adopters will gain first mover advantages. Firms taking the broad view of geometallurgy will have an opportunity to maximise stakeholder value and win greater success than their less insightful competitors.

NICKEL Plate mountain coincides closely with that portion of the Hedley mining district which is of economic interest. From it has come almost the entire past production, and the active mines of the present epoch, Nickel Plate-Sunnyside and Hedley Mascot, lie in a compact group near its summit. The Hedley district, which is 210 miles due east of Vancouver, is situated in the Okanagan range of southern British Columbia, where this rather gentle uplift is deeply dissected by the canyons of the Similkameen and its tributaries. The region is essentially part of the Interior Plateau of the Province (Figure 1), but is adjacent to easterly elements of the Coast Range. The Similkameen canyon, 4,000 feet in depth and frequently less than 4 miles from rim to rim, traverses the district from northwest to southeast. The deepest and narrowest portion of the canyon lies between Hedley and Keremeos, 18 miles to the southeast. At Hedley, an important tributary, Twenty Mile creek, enters from the north in a bold canyon, making a focus of unusually rugged topography. Nickel Plate mountain occupies the sector to the east of this junction (see Figure 2) and its flanks are ringed by the cliffs of Twenty Mile canyon on the west and by those of the Similkameen canyon on the south. On the east, it slopes gently to the hanging valley of Eighteen Mile creek, and on the north, with only slight loss of elevation, it merges into the moderately hilly surface of the plateau.

Reports for the calendar year 1923 that have been transmitted to the Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior by mine officials of the various coal-producing States show that accidents in and around the coal mines resulted in the death of 2,452 men. The output of coal during the year, as reported to the United States Geo- logical Survey, was 641,476,000 tons; hence the fatality rate per million tons was 3.82 as compared with 4.15 for 1922, a decline of about 8 per cent. The average rate for the decade ending with 1922 was 4.11. This reduction of 8 per cent in the fatal-accident rate per million tons is equivalent to the saving of 210 lives--that is, had the fatality rate of 1922 continued through 1923 the number of lives lost would have been 210 more than they actually were. Not only was there a net reduction in the fatality rate from all causes combined, but each of the main causes of coal-mine fatalities also showed a decline. Falls of roof and coal, which generally account for nearly half of all deaths in coal mines, were responsible for 1,158 fatalities in 1923, which represents a rate of 1.81 per million tons as compared with 1.90 in 1922. (See Table 2.) Haulage accidents underground usually cause about 17 per cent of all fatalities, and the reports for 1923 show that 413 deaths were due to this cause, indi- cating a rate of 0.64 per million tons, as against 0.71 for the previous year. Gas and dust explosions killed 372 men, the fatality rate being 0.58; the rate for 1922 was 0.65. Seventy-five deaths were due to electricity, for which class of accidents the fatality rate per million tons was 0.12 as compared with 0.16 the year before. Powder and other explosives caused 114 deaths, representing a rate of 0.18 as compared with 0.19 for 1922. Of the 2,452 fatal accidents during the year, 2,249 occurred under- ground, 46 in shafts, and 157 on the surface. "Excessive wear rates on railway wheels can result in rolling-stock derailments. If wear is detected early the possible derailments can be prevented by prematurely replacing wheelsets, although the inventory cost and maintenance downtime remain a challenge. In the current study, wheels were introduced and monitored in-service for two years to investigate the cause of excessive wear rates. The wear rates and stresses were calculated for the wheels suitable for a maximum load of 26 t per axle. Microstructural and mechanical properties were analysed. As expected, the general microstructure of all the wheels tested was pearlitic. Although all the wheels complied with the tensile strength requirements, stress calculations confirmed material distortion on excessively worn wheels whereas trial wheels revealed yield strength exceeding the yield criterion. High wear rates observed on the wheels were a result of low yield strength relative to the load per axle. The typical wear mechanism found was due to a combination of rolling contact fatigue and abrasive brake wear. Despite compliance of the wheels with existing requirements regarding material and mechanical properties (hardness, ultimate tensile strength), it is recommended that the yield strength must also be taken into consideration as a critical parameter.IntroductionRailway wheels are used to support the wagon mass and guide the wagon along the tracks (Park, 1974). The wheels and rails must be able to tolerate the applied tangential forces in order to effect wagon dynamic performance and reduce material deformation (Ghidini et al., 1994; RSE_TE_SPC_0045, 2011; AAR M107/M 208 Specification, 2011. Over the past ten years, the South African coal wagon maintenance depot has experienced excessive hollow wheel wear rates on the heavy haul line wheels. The maximum load of Jumbo wagons on the coal line is 104 t, or 26 t per axle. Although the maintenance intervention cycle for wheelsets was two years, between February 2011 and August 2012 some wheels experienced excessive hollow wear. Hollow wear is regarded as wear exceeding 2 mm on the central portion of the wheel tread (RSE_TE_SPC_0045, 2011). This happened despite the fact that these wheels were manufactured and certified according to the requirements of AAR M107/208 standard for carbon steel wheels (AAR M107/M 208 Specification,. 2011) and the local wheel RS/ME/SP 021 standard specification (RS / ME / SP / 021 REV 5 (2013). The AAR standard only specifies a minimum hardness as a required mechanical property and the local standard specifies hardness and minimum tensile strength only. In general, an increase in hardness will improve the rolling/sliding wear resistance of steel. This relationship of hardness and wear resistance was found to be true only in a situation where solid and similar alloys are in contact (Singh, Khatirkar and Sapate, 2015). The sliding wear resistance of a material is usually estimated using Archard’s equation (Liu and Li, 2001)."

From March 1944 to July 1945 the Division of Geophysical Exploration of the Federal Bureau of Mines made magnetometer surveys of some of the principal iron ore deposits of the Iron Springs district, Iron County, Utah. The district comprises a belt about 23 miles long and 3 miles wide. Most of the large ore bodies are found as pods of replacement ore within a favorable limestone bed lying at the margins of three separate igneous intrusions in the district The magnetic surveys were confined chiefly to this geologically favorable zone at the margins. The iron ore is a mixture of magnetite and hematite. The magnetite content of the ore ranges from 14 to 58 percent. Magnetic anomalies of 1,250 gammas or more were usually found over the near-surface ore bodies. About 62,000 magnetometer stations were taken over a total traverse distance of about 300 miles. Outcropping ore bodies were surveyed to determine, insofar as was possible from the magnetic data, their probable length, width, depth, extent, strike, dip, and tonnage. Geologically favorable areas where no ore is exposed were explored in an endeavor to find new ore bodies. Favorable locations were determined for exploratory diamond drilling, both in areas of exposed ore bodies and in areas of newly discovered magnetic anomalies. Forty-five separate magnetic anomalies that indicate the possible existence of ore bodies were observed. Of these, 13 anomalies are caused by outcropping ore bodies of proved commercial size. Five are caused by non-outcropping ore bodies of proved commercial size which were discovered, in whole or in part, as a result of the geophysical surveys. Of the remaining anomalies, which lie in virtually un-tested areas where few or no ore bodies are exposed, six probably are caused by large, unexposed replacement ore bodies, nine are possibly caused by large, unexposed replacement ore bodies, and six are probably caused by unexposed magnetite veins of some small commercial importance,

This paper reports a solid oxide membrane (SOM) electrolysis experiment using an LSM– Inconel inert anode current collector for production of Mg and O2 at 1423K. The electrochemical performance of the SOM cell was evaluated by using various electrochemical techniques including electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, potentiodynamic scans, and potentiostatic electrolysis. The effects of Mg solubility in the flux on the current efficiency and the YSZ membrane stability during SOM electrolysis were discussed and examined through experiment and modeling. The electronic transference number of the flux were measured to assess the Mg dissolution in the flux during SOM electrolysis. A negative correlation between the electronic transference number of the flux and the current efficiency of the SOM electrolysis was observed.

"In 2013, Augered Cast-in-Place (ACIP) piles are a mature foundation technology throughout the United States. General guidelines for the design and construction of ACIP piles are available along with numerous references for design in specific North American geologies. In fact, the current generation of contractors and geotechnical practitioners might view ACIP piles as just another deep foundation option to be considered, along with driven piles, drilled shafts and others. This acceptance has developed, however, over a 60-plus year period.The term, Augered Pressure-Grouted (APG) pile is often used when referring to ACIP piles because the piles emerged out of construction processes at the Intrusion-Prepakt firm in the late 1940s. The company’s specialty was pressure grouting and preplaced aggregate concrete. The grouting was typically accomplished by driving a pipe to a target level and then injecting grout under pressure. In some soil conditions, it was necessary to use an auger to reach the desired grouting depth. In these circumstances, the grout pipe was driven beside the auger and grout was pumped as the auger was withdrawn. The grout pipe was then withdrawn as well. This was the genesis of the APG, or ACIP pile, and many piles were installed using this technique. The patent application, “Method for Forming Piles” was filed by Raymond Patterson of Intrusion-Prepakt in 1951, and the patent was granted in 1956. The process was eventually modified when a suitable hollow-stem auger was developed. Licenses were granted to the Lee Turzillo Contracting Company and Berkel & Company Contractors, Inc. in the late 1950s. Over time, “Augercast” was frequently used as a generic term for the system. The installation of these piles was, and still is, a highly nuanced process; “contractor dependent” is a term often seen today. Intrusion-Prepakt, Berkel and Turzillo all had personnel who were part of the original group that developed the system and who appreciated the craftsmanship involved in forming sound piles."

The York Durham Sewage System (YDSS) Interceptor Tunnel Project is located in the Town of Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada, just north of Toronto. Construction commenced in September 2006 and completion is planned for early summer, 2008. The project involved public and agency buy-in of construction technologies and methods that minimized dewatering, design and construction of sealed shafts with jet grout break-in and out blocks in order that Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) mode could be maintained by the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) during shaft entry and exit. This paper will discuss the advances that were made possible through the opportunity to apply and test these technologies in order to accommodate the aquifer and artesian conditions present on this project.

DURING the last six years, there have been many extensive investigations of the fatigue of metals. The major work of 'these investigations has been the determination of constants for fatigue strength of wrought ferrous metals; but during the past year or two there have become available considerable test data on the fatigue strength of certain nonrferrous metals, including copper, brass, bronze, nickel, copper-nickel alloys, aluminum and aluminum alloys, magnesium and magnesium alloys. It is not proposed to give here extensive quantitative tables of test results; for such tables, reference is made to the published data of various laboratories. The following general conclusions, however, seem to be fairly well established: 1. The phenomenon known as "fatigue" of metal really a progressive fracture of metals. A minute (probably submicroscopic) crack is formed in the metal, the internat stress, is intensified at the ends' of the crack, and under successive applications of load the crack spreads like a minute hacksaw cut until there is not enough sound metal left in the cross-section of the piece to stand the load. applied, and then failure occurs suddenly. 2. For wrought ferrous metals, there is .a limiting intensity of stress (as computed by the ordinary formulas of mechanics of materials) below which, a metal is able to withstand an indefinitely large number of repetitions of stress without failure. This limiting stress is known as the "endurance limit or the fatigue limit.? For reversed flexure, the endurance limit for. wrought ferrous metals is usually not far from 50 per cent. of the ultimate tensile strength.

At MacIntyre Development of the National Lead Company, Taha s, New York,, the flotation plant was set up to recover ilmenite from the finer size fraction of the ore that cannot be efficiently treated in the main gravity-magnetic separa¬tion process. It was later expanded to handle the reground middlings from the tables wetherill magnetic separators. The ilmenite-magnetite ore is ground to minus 20 mesh in five 6 x 12 ft. rod mills in closed circuit with DSM screens. The minus 20 mesh screen undersize is pumped to four parallel sections each consisting of two rougher wet-magnetic separators and one cleaner separator for magnatite removal. The screen undersize from the fifth section is distributed to all four sections. The magnetite removed in the roughers is pumped back to the cleaners and the cleaner magnetite is dewatered in rake classifiers and carried by belt to the winter plant or the stockpile area. The nonmagnetic sands from rougher and cleaner magnetic separator are sized for table feed in eight pocket hydraulic sizers. The slime overflows from the Crocketts, the sizers, and the magnetite rakes are collected and pumped to three-inch cyclones for thickening and desliming. The cyclone underflow is the principal flotation plant feed.

A study is described which attempts to identify the chemical factors of common concern to environmental and exploration geochemistry as indicated by recent work in both disciplines in Nova Scotia. Cores taken in lake sediments define geochemical baselines for the modern and pre-industrialisation periods. The investigation of lake and stream drainage indicates the presence of numerous chemical and organic factors that can be attributed to man's activities, such as construction and energy consumption. Geochemical surveys of lake and stream sediments are used to locate potentially toxic, high risk areas in Nova Scotia. Rapid change occurs in most surface drainage systems with the possibility of numerous chemical reactions taking place. It is found that spatial and temporal variations in the chemistry of modern and recent sediments are of interest to exploration and environmental surveys.
