Originally developed for use in mineral exploration, regional geochemical mapping based on stream (and lake) sediment sampling is showing broader application in other areas of the earth sciences and in environmental science. The purpose of this paper is to focus attention on the role of regional geochemical mapping in relation to geological and environmental studies. This is achieved using a descriptive equation for the chemical composition of a stream-sediment sample and then relating it to the use of successive approximations in geochemical and environmental investigations. The procedure is further qualified with reference to time and process in the formation of regional geochemical patterns. Examples are included of studies based on stream sediments related to bedrock geology, surficial geology, ecology and man's effect on the geochemistry of the environment. The range of applications of regional geochemical mapping in earth and environmental studies is outlined and some conclusions drawn regarding the future development of geochemical mapping under Canadian conditions.

Several Rockmass classification systems have been developed and used in Civil Engineering design and for underground mining operations. Some of these rockmass classification systems have been modified and used in the South African coal mining industry to quantify descriptive geological information for use in coal mine design and roof support selection. The Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) system developed in the USA has been investigated in detail as part of the study. Advantages and disadvantages of the system have been identified by means of underground and surface borehole testing. Investigations into the rating systems in South Africa found that most of the rating systems used in the South African coal mining industry are for planning purposes, and are conducted on borehole cores. This study also highlighted that the rating systems being used are based on geology, and that the human factor plays a major role in the rating systems. To overcome these problems, all the classification systems used in South African coal mines have been benchmarked against impact splitting technique and documented. The best elements of these systems are combined into a new standard system that will be easily used by all mine geologists and rock mechanics engineers. Certains de ces systèmes de classification de la masse rocheuse ont été modifiés et utilisés dans l'industrie minière sud-africaine pour quantifier l'information géologique descriptive utilisée dans la conception de mines de charbon et la sélection de soutènement du toit. Le système d'Evaluation de Toit de Mine de Charbon (CMRR) développé aux USA a été examiné en détail, comme part de l'étude présente. Tests en surface de trous de mine ont permis d'identifier les avantages et inconvénients du système. Une étude des systèmes d'évaluation en Afrique du Sud a révélé que la plupart des systèmes d'évaluation utilisés dans l'industrie minière sud-africaine sont utilisés pour la planification, et sont menés sur les carottes de trous de mine. L'étude présente a aussi souligné que les systèmes d'évaluation utilisés sont basés sur la géologie, et que le facteur humain joue un rôle majeur dans les systèmes d'évaluation. Pour surmonter ces problèmes, tous les systèmes de classification utilisés en Afrique du Sud ont été référencés en termes de technique de fissuration sur choc, et documentés. Prüfungen der Bewertungssysteme in Südafrika ergaben, daß die meisten Bewertungssysteme die in der südafrikanischen Kohlebergbauindustrie benutzt werden, Planungszwecken dienen und werden anhand von Bohrlochkernen durchgeführt. Diese Studie hob auch hervor, daß die verwendeten Bewertungssysteme auf Geologie basieren und daß der menschliche Faktor eine Hauptrolle in den Bewertungssystemen spielt. Um diese Probleme zu überwinden, wurden alle in südafrikanischen Kohlengruben benutzte Klassifizierungssysteme vergleichsweise in Hinblick auf Spaltschlagtechnik überprüft und dokumentiert. Die besten Elemente dieser Systeme werden in ein neues Standardsystem kombiniert, das leicht von allen Grubengeologen und von Gebirgsmechanikingenieuren benutzt werden kann.

Underground mining, like many high-risk industries, is facing a crisis in the near future. This industry has traditionally relied on a master-apprentice relationship to train new workers, but experienced miners are retiring in large numbers, leaving few "masters" to properly train their replacements. With a recent resurgence in mining, many new miners are entering the workforce each day. The rise in the number of inexperienced workers has implications for worker safety in an industry in which one mistake can blow up the entire workplace. The explosion in the Darby Mine in May 2006 that killed five miners illustrates what can happen in hazardous environments such as underground mines. The Health Communications Team at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Spokane Research Laboratory was asked to address this problem by developing new training and safety awareness materials to promote safe flame cutting and welding practices. This article describes how occupational ethnographic techniques provided insights needed for "new product development." The result of this work was a national initiative to raise awareness and to protect underground coal miners from the dangers of flame cutting and welding in an environment filled with solid fuel and methane (natural gas). Although this project was initially designed for the mining industry, the approach and lessons learned are applicable to any high-risk industry and should be of interest to other social marketing or occupational safety and health professionals.

Ni, Co, Cu and Pt, mattes are common materials that require granulating and milling of the resultant granules for further processing. This route is acceptable if the material is brittle (friable) which is a property associated with the higher sulphur mattes. For lower sulphur levels, where the matte is less amenable to milling, the costs of the milling increases. This paper will compare water granulation with certain dry granulation processes and the downstream processes required for Hydrometallurgy. It will further introduce and expand on atomisation which offers a further safety benefit in the control of the metal flow into the 'wet zone' with the use of a tundish flow control also reducing the conversion from the matte to powder in one fairly straightforward operation.

Following the experimental work of Denny, Robson, and Irwin, and the clinical investigation by Crombie and Blaisdell, an investigation of aluminium therapy was begun at Washington, Pa., which is situated In a very large industrial section of the State. Some of the men to be studied were from plants manufacturing silica brick, refractories used in steel and glass manufacturing, and semi-porcelain table-ware; others were workers in foundries, sand blasters, and men engaged in the quarrying of ganister rock.This group of workmen gave an opportunity to study the effects of aluminium on various types of silicosis which differed somewhat from that found in hard-rock miners.EXPOSUREIn their occupations, the men studied were exposed to silica dust concentrations ranging from 17 to 97 per cent free silica. In the silica brick industries, the unfired product averages 96 per cent silica in the form of quartz, whereas the fired brick contains 50 to 62 per cent. cristobalite plus 11 to 80 per cent. tridymite, forms of silica that, on account of their higher solubility, are more toxic than quartz. The operational dust counts in the plants varied from 15 to 9,500 particles per c.c., and the median particle size from the aerial samples was 1.0 micron for the green product and 2.0 microns for the fired product. The length of exposure varied with the occupation as well as with the individual plant, but disabling silicosis could be produced in less than four years in certain exposures. The average time needed to produce radiological silicosis in those susceptible to this disease was eight years. Some of the men in our series of cases have been treated as long as fifteen years after exposure had ceased, and have improved under treatment.The dust counts mentioned above had been reduced prior to the aluminium therapy studies and the presen.t exposures do not exceed '900 particles per c.c., the average being 370 particles. per c.c. This improvement in dust conditions was due to improved dust control apparatus, which was installed before aluminium therapy was instituted. Aluminium powder is not a substitute for dust control.PATHOLOGYThe pathological picture of silicosis in men engaged in the ceramic industry is somewhat different from that in hard rock miners." Discontinuity Orientation Measurement (DOM) drilling system capable of retrieving the reference line-marked core log, which can be used for determining the relative positions and orientations of discontinuity planes along the borehole axis, has been developed. Accuracy of the borehole joints data measured from the reference-lined core and, eventually, the significance and applicability of DOM drilling system for site exploration are verified by comparing with the spatial characteristics of joints investigated by implementing borehole image-taking instruments in the same borehole. Enhancement of boring efficiency has been also confirmed by performing twin drilling operations, one with DOM drilling system and the other with a conventional drilling machine equipped with D-3 core barrel, on two neighbouring sites of 5 m apart. There was a time when an occasional failure of a tailings embankment was considered an acceptable risk associated with mining activities. This is not the case anymore. A major tailings failure today could result in the indictment of mine officials, huge fines and a possible site closure due to the loss of operating permits. As a result of this changed operational environment, tailings disposal facilities must be operated with these potential consequences in mind. Physical controls for tailings embankments are prohibitively expensive. However, the nuclear industry has developed a system of administrative controls as an alternative to physical controls. Administrative controls may be defined as control of actions, through organizations and management, using written procedures, record keeping, review and audit to assure operation of a facility in a safe manner (10 CFR 50). Administrative controls can reduce the cost of operating tailings impoundments, as well as increase the level of confidence in these facilities.

Standards methods covers the procedures for testing deep foundation to determine the force and velocity response to an impact of a pile driving hammer or similar device. The results of analysis generally include an assessment of pile integrity and the value of maximum dynamic stresses. But evaluation of static bearing capacity remains a matter of individual engineering judgment. A new 1D finite elements model has been developed for dynamic stresses and velocity analysis. Following an international benchmark of bearing capacity prediction organised by the Belgium Building Research Institute (BBRI), 12 piles in a site of fissured stiff tertiary clay tested in 1999, and 12 piles in a site of dense sand tested in 2001, comparison are proposed between analysis of dynamic tests and static tests results. A procedure is proposed to take in account the results of dynamic test for evaluation of bearing capacity.

A laboratory size solvent extraction apparatus has been constructed, which incorp- orates three stages of countercurrent extraction, followed by two stages of counter- current stripping. The model uses a gravity flow system from one stage to another and air lift pumps to recirculate organic and aqueous phases. A novel pump/mixer system is used to transfer solutions from the mixer compartments to the settler compartments. The model has proven valuable in the teaching of solvent extraction principles.

ABSTRACT: It is well known in underground mining and waste disposal that the development of excavation damaged zones (EDZ), and thus, hydraulic pathways, is closely related to the excess in the corresponding damage boundary (= long-term strength) of the rock mass and the resulting damage. By integrating short-term and long-term strength, dilatancy, damage and healing into the newly extended Hou/Lux constitutive model for rock salt, it is possible to treat the tertiary creep, to identify the EDZ around underground facilities and to predict the time-dependent development of the EDZ in rock salt. Under in-situ conditions, the EDZ of a 37-year-old drift at the Sondershausen salt mine and the EDZ around a drift dam in rock salt are numerically examined. The numerical analysis gives satisfactory results. RÉSUMÉ: Dans les exploitations minières et le stockage souterrain des déchets, le développement des zones endommagées et fracturées (EDZ – excavation damaged zone), créant des chemins préférentiels pour écoulement, est étroitement lié au contexte géotechnique et à la méthode d’excavation. En intégrant la résistance court et long terme, la dilatance, l’endommagement et le colmatage, le nouveau modèle rhéologique Hou/Lux pour le sel gemme est capable de traiter le fluage tertiaire, d’évaluer l’extension de l’EDZ et de prédire l’évolution de EDZ dans temps autour des ouvrages creusés dans le sel gemme. L’EDZ d’une galerie datée de 37 ans dans la mine de sel de Sondershausen et les EDZ autour de barrage des galeries dans un sel gemme ont été modélisées. Les résultats numériques fournissent des résultats satisfaisants. ZUSAMENFASSUNG: Bekanntlich ist die Entstehung von Auflockerungszonen und damit hydraulischen Wegsamkeiten in der unmittelbaren Umgebung um bergmännische Hohlräume mit der Überschreitung der entsprechenden Schädigungsgrenze eng verbunden. Unter Berücksichtigung der Bruchfestigkeit, Schädigungsgrenze, Dilatanz, Schädigung und Verheilung kann das Stoffmodell Hou/Lux das Verhalten des tertiären Kriechens beschreiben, die Auflockerungszone im Salzgebirge ermitteln und ihre zeitabhängige Ausdehnung vorausberechnen. Mit diesem Stoffmodell werden die Auflockerungszonen einer 37jährigen Strecke in der Salzgrube Sondershausen und die Auflockerungszonen um ein exemplarisches Abdichtungsbauwerk im Salzgebirge numerisch untersucht. Dabei werden zufriedenstellende Berechnungsergebnisse erzielt.

The planning and operation of ventilation network systems for uranium mines require special considerations since ventilation is the primary technique of controlling ambient concentrations of radon progeny. The major environmental challenge facing the ventilation engineer is the requirement to dilute radon progeny to below the Working Level Month per year of worker exposure required by law. The application of large airflow volumes and the utilization of low residence times constitute some of the factors considered by the design engineer. Good mine planning and sequencing are also critical for protecting the health of miners. The mine ventilation must have such characteristics as flexibility, high air distribution efficiency, rapid air transit times, zero recirculation and no short-circuiting. A well established maintenance program for all ventilation appliances must be in place to guarantee control of the distribution system. Real-time monitoring systems permit assurance the adequate quality of air is delivered to working places. A case study for an operating mine is used to demonstrate how the ventilation system is successfully managed and operated using the above concepts.

"In this work, the Panzhihua low grade ilmenite and graphite were milled for 1, 2, 4 and 8 h firstly, then the temperature rising behavior of milled sample in microwave field were studied. The average heating rate of samples milled for 1, 2, 4, 8 h were 1.86, 4.08, 2.82, and 2.32 K/s; Before optimize the microwave reduction process, several experiments were conducted in order to confirm the parameters range. After milled for 4 or 8 h and reduced above 930 oC, the Fe metallization are higher than 90%; Then the optimization was investigated by using response surface methodology (RSM), the significance of predict model and each terms were analyzed, and the optimization parameters were given as: milling time is 4 h; reduction temperature is 1001 or 1070oC; the holding time is 37.5 or 26.9 min. Under these conditions, the Fe metallization given by predict model is 91 or 92 %.IntroductionThere is about 9.66 billion tons of Vanadic Titan-magnetite deposits in Panzhihua, China. In this reserve, there is about 8.73×108 t of TiO2, accounting for 90.54% of the Chinese reserves, and 35.17% of the international reserves and ranking first in the world. [1] Titanium mineral deposits are classified into Rock type and Placer type. Rock type is the igneous mineral, which have high content of FeO (Relative to Fe2O3) and gangue. The Panzhihua ilmenite is a typical rock type ilmenite ore. The higher contents of MgO, CaO, SiO2 and the complex mineralogy are making its direct reduction progressively more difficult."

For the purpose of comparing the amounts of dust produced by various mining operations, samples of atmospheric dust were collected during a complete cycle of drilling, blasting and mucking at or near the face of the Bureau's Mount Weather testing adit while the efficiency of several types of stemming in metal-mine blasting was being investigated. Gold in the stibnite veins of Costerfield, Victoria, was described in 1922 1, prior to any mineragraphic examination, as (a) free yellow gold (b) free rusty gold and (c) combined gold. The free yellow gold occurs in quartz and will amalgamate with mercury. The free gold of dull, rusty or copper-red colour occurs in massive stibnite and has been stated to resist amalgamation with mercury. The dull colour is only skin deep and the colour is bright when the rusty gold is scratched. The appearance of the rusty gold is spongy or cellular and it generally occurs near small cavities in the stibnite. The suggestion that the cellular character indicated the removal of a certain amount of stibnite leaving a residue of se.condary gold cannot be sustained.It now appears probable that the rusty gold is formed by the primary dissociation of a gold antimonide and is distinct in origin from the normal yellow gold which is deposited with quartz or stibnite from auriferous mineral solutions.The combined gold referred to in the earlier paper was the gold contained in the stibnite as revealed by assay. Such gold was at first thought to be either dissolved in the stibnite or else present as free interstitial particles too minute for observation in transmitted light in thin sections.Subsequent examination of numerous polished,surfaces disclosed the small particles of gold occurring in the grain boundaries in aggregates of fine grained stibnite 2. The assumption that all the gold in the stibnite, as revealed by assay, occurred in this way is now known to be incorrect, because limited amounts of a gold antimonide have been found in the veins.

The Dugald River zinc-lead deposit is located 60 km northwest of Cloncurry. It was discovered prior to 1881, and since 1937, has been the subject of several drilling programmcs which have outlined a resource potential of 60 million tonnes grading 10 per cent zinc, 1 per cent lead, and 30 g/t silver.The deposit is a classical example of stratiform zinc lead mineralization in a black shale host. It occurs within a restricted clastic sedimentary basin within the Corella Formation of Carpentarian (Middle Proterozoic) age. Sabkha, lacustrine and fluvial sedimentary environments have been recognized within this basin. Each environment is characterized by suites of evaporite mineral pseudomorphs, after both shortite and gypsum, indicating that both alkaline and hypersaline environments prevailed at different times during basin evolution. The Dugald Slates which host the zinc-·lead mineralization are lacustrine in origin. Thin Mount Isa-type K-rich tuffite beds occur in the Dugald Slates and in the sabkha sequences.The basin as a whole appears not 10 have been marine, and 10 have had strong tectonic controls on its depositional history.The mineral deposit itself is conformable within the Dugald Slates and many primary sedimentary and soft-sediment deformation structures are preserved. It has a strike length of 2 km, average width of 10 m, and a westerly dip of 50-80 . Drilling suggests continuity to 1000 m vertical depth. The predominant sulphides are pyrrhotite, pyrite, sphalerite and galena in graphitic slate and quartz-carbonate ganguc. Anomalous concentrations of barium, manganese, cadmium, mercury and antimony are present in the ore.The deposit crops out over a distance of 2 km as a gossan ranging from 5-15 m in width. There is a striking vegetation anomaly over the gossanous outcrops. The gossan is enriched in lead, silver, antimony, barium, titaniulll, silica and iron, with respect to the primary mineralization. The depth of total oxidation reaches about 20 m.Cieochemical and geophysical test surveys over the deposit give pronounced anomalies.

The conditions under which the researches of the Bureau of Mines on petroleum and natural gas were conducted in 1952 were little changed from those indicated in the last report,2/ which dealt with activities during 1951, immediately after crossing of the 38th Parallel by the North Korean Army. Although only a small part of the program was classified in the military sense, there was a feeling of the clash of world forces which called for even cheer scrutiny of the research problems so that the emphasis could be placed without delay where the greatest needs for na¬tional defense seemed to be. The reports of the work accomplished were so directed as to have the greatest immediate value to persons charged with supply planning for the military forces and included information on the availability and characteristics of a wide variety of crude oils, fuels, and other petroleum products. Actually, the approach, direction, and conduct of the work do not differ greatly under the two circumstances, as has been pointed out in earlier reports; only the tempo changes.

"Non-producing mineral properties include those at various stages of exploration, properties at the pre-feasibility or feasibility stage, properties with currently uneconomic mineral resources, and past-producers. The market approach is applicable to all these types of non-producing mineral properties. Income approach methods such as discounted cash flow and option pricing are generally not applicable to properties at the exploration stage, but may be applicable to non-producing mineral properties with defined mineral reserves or mineral resources.The value of a non-producing mineral property depends on its perceived potential for the existence and discovery of an economic mineral deposit. The potential, in turn, depends on a number of factors which must be considered when choosing market comparables. These comparability factors include such items as geology, mineralization, stage of exploration and results, mineral resources, location and geography, and political jurisdiction. The date of the market comparables must be within a reasonable time period of the valuation date of the subject property. Although it is difficult to find good market comparables because of the unique nature of mineral properties and the small number of transactions, these difficulties are compensated for by analyzing a number of transactions on similar properties to develop a range of values for the subject property.For valuation purposes, market comparables can be expressed in terms of total property value, value per unit area (e.g., $ per hectare), or value per unit of metal contained in mineral resources (e.g., $ per ounce of gold, or $ per pound of copper). The market comparable value can be used to estimate the value of the subject property by using the total property value, unit area value or contained metal value."

The REP experiment is part of the research programme conducted by Andra to investigate the possibility of reversible radwaste disposal in a Jurassic (Callovo-Oxfordian) argillite formation at the Meuse/Haute-Marne underground laboratory site in northeastern France. The experiment focuses on the hydromechanical response of the formation to sinking the laboratory access shaft. Modelling of boreholes and shaft sinking operations has helped to optimise measurement point locations based on initial stress tensor anisotropy, while minimising interaction between instrument boreholes. Analyses were made of model sensitivity to intrinsic rock characteristics, hydromechanical coupling properties and sensor installation procedures. L’expérimentation REP fait partie du programme de recherche pluridisciplinaire engagé par l’Andra pour étudier la possibilité d’un stockage réversible des déchets radioactifs dans la formation Callovo-Oxfordienne des argilites du site de Meuse/Haute-Marne (Commune de Bure - France). Cette expérimentation permettra d’étudier la REponse hydromécanique de la formation aux sollicitations engendrées par le fonçage du Puits d’accès du laboratoire souterrain de recherche. Afin d’optimiser le positionnement des points de mesures, compte tenu de l’anisotropie du tenseur des contraintes initiales, et de minimiser les interactions entre les forages d’instrumentation, des modélisations des forages et du creusement du puits ont été conduites. Des analyses de sensibilité aux caractéristiques intrinsèques de la roche, aux propriétés de couplage HM et aux protocoles d’installation des capteurs ont été faites. Die REP-Untersuchung ist Teil des multidisziplinären Forschungsprogramms, das die ANDRA im Callovo-Oxfordian-Tonstein in situ am Standort Meuse/Haute Marne (Gemeinde Bure – Frankreich) im Hinblick auf eine Eignung zur reversiblen Lagerung radioaktiver Abfälle durchführt. Dabei soll das hydro-mechanische Verhalten der Formation auf die Beanspruchungen, die durch das Abteufen des Zugangsschachts zum Untertage-Forschungslabor erzeugt werden, untersucht werden. Zur optimalen Positionierung der Messpunkte unter Berücksichtigung der Anisotropie des Tensors der Ausgangsspannungen und zur Minimierung der gegenseitigen Beeinflussung der Instrumentierbohrungen wurden ein Schachtabteuf- und Bohrmodelle entwickelt. Zur Untersuchung der inhärenten Eigenschaften des Gesteins, des gekoppelten HM-Verhaltens und der Installationsprotokolle der Messsonden wurden Sensibilitätsanalysen durchgeführt.
