The operations discussed include: sampling and sweating of radiators, processing of Indian Coin, treatment of insulated wire, baghouse and converter dust treatment, blast furnace and converter operation, the electric arc furnace, antimony control, selenium and tellurium products, electrolyte liberation with soluble anodes, and the precious metals refinery. These operations, although peripheral to the primary copper production circuit, were critical to the company's technological and economic base.

INTRODUCTION THE use of iron powder during the post-war conversion period has been increasing with great rapidity. This is particularly true in regard to the manufacture of molded mechanical parts such as bushings, gears, cams, small wheels, and the like. Many manufacturers have found it possible to replace machined cast iron and carbon steel with molded iron powder parts, and thereby can not only effect a savings in cost, but can produce a better product as well. As the field of application for iron powder parts widens, greater demands are made upon the powder supplier concerning quality and uniformity characteristics. The following are some of the most important properties parts fabricators desire in the iron powder they use: I. The powder should have high compressibility so that good density can be obtained without the use of excessive pressures. At the same time, it should show low die wear so that a large number of pieces can be produced from the die. This means that the powder must be of high purity and good softness or plasticity. 2. The powder should produce compacts of high green strength, so that unsintered parts can be handled without breakage or fraying of the edges. 3. The sintering properties should be good so that satisfactory strength is obtained in the sintered piece. 4. Compacts made from the powder should show small but, above all, uniform dimensional changes during the sintering operation so that accurate parts can be produced, and warping and other such bad effects eliminated. 5. The powder should have satisfactory flow properties for automatic molding. 6. It is very important that the powder be uniform in sieve analysis, compressibility, flow, purity, and other qualities, from container to container in any given lot and from shipment to shipment. 7. Price-The fabricators desire all these good properties, but in many instances still do not wish to pay a premium price. There has been considerable discussion as to the importance of price of the powder in relation to the cost of the finished product. It is true that in cases where certain special properties only procured by powder metallurgy are required, price is not a criterion. On the other hand, there have been a number of applications recently made which would not be commercially practical with a powder which commands a premium in price. Iron powder parts are compressed in automatic presses to definite size, shape, and density. The powder is compressed to a density figure dependent upon the function the part is to perform, as well as upon such important considerations as press capacity and die wear. The value of processed materials of mineral origin was estimated to have exceeded $297 billion in 1991. U.S. raw non fuel minerals production in 1991 was estimated at $30.8 billion, a 5.8% decline from that in 1990. This estimate was based on data for the first quarter of 1991 (in some cases two quarters) for most of the 21 minerals that for many years have accounted for more than 95% of the industry's production value. The value of minerals production has increased in all but 4 of the last 30 years. The metals component of production value has fluctuated much more than the industrial minerals component, reflecting the greater volatility of metal prices. Employment in metal mining rose slightly in 1991, but this gain was more than offset by a decline in employment in industrial mineral mining, resulting in an overall decline of 3.0% to 164,600 workers in 1991. Prices of several major metals declined during 1991, reflecting weakness in the economy, causing some metal mines to shut down or reduce operations.

ALTHOUGH the midday lunches of business associations have been re-echoing the phrases that re- search would lead us out of the depression and that the last place to economize is on research, nevertheless most executives apparently concluded that it was their neighbor who ought not to economize in research, and that in their own plants what had been discovered in 1929-30 was sufficient to lead them out of the wilderness. At any rate, I have discovered much less that seems worth noting, and compared with 1931, the report volume of the committee members is off about 40 per cent, and compared with 1929, about 80 per cent. Evidently there is some hookup with the +tee1 industry as to output, and the Report Reading Committee should investigate this and the relative use of commas and periods.

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) find wide range of applications from portable electronics to electric cars and stationary storage or renewable energy. LIB electrode fabrication is done through mixing the active material (Li-ion host) with carbon (conductive component) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), which acts as a binder. These components are dissolved in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) to form a paste which is then doctor bladed onto the aluminum current collector. NMP is a toxic chemical and the overall fabrication process remains costly. Efforts are made of eliminating NMP by (1) replacing the binder and (2) using a new fabrication method. Of particular interest among these new methods is electrophoretic deposition (EPD). Via the application of DC potential, particles in suspension can be electrophoretically deposited on different conductive substrates in a relatively fast rate rendering EPD feasible for industrial application. A key aspect for successful application of EPD is the formulation of a stable suspension. Within the McGill HydroMET group, we explore the potential of EPD in fabricating LIB electrodes having demonstrated its effectiveness in the case of P25 nanotitania/carbon anodes. The performance of EPD fabricated TiO2/C electrodes is compared to standard PVDF-based electrodes and shown to have comparable charge capacity. This method is now being extended to other electrode materials. In this paper an introduction to the EPD method will be made and subsequently its use in fabricating LIB electrodes will be described. The performance of the fabricated batteries is evaluated via galvanostatic charging/discharging and cycling tests.

Because of its convenience and availability, natural gas (and to a much less extent manufactured gas) in being used more generally throughout the country for domestic and industrial purposes. With this use, specific and little-recognized hazards have arisen owing principally to the fact that the public and the consumer lack knowledge of the explosive property of this fuel. During the past 8 years gas explosions hove occurred in public and private buildings with loss of more than 300 lives and injury to many others. Such appalling catastrophes can and will be prevented if and when the necessary precautions are taken in the construction of buildings and the installation and maintenance of gas lines and gas appliances, plus adequate supervisions inspection, and education.

RECENTLY, it has been demonstrated that a considerable densification and interparticle bonding can be achieved if a pressure is applied to a powder compact while the material of the compact is undergoing either a decomposition reaction' or a polymorphic transformation.' The term "reactive hot pressing" has been coined to identify this process in which a phase change is combined with pressure to achieve interparticle bonding. This process is based on a principle which postulates that there is an enhanced reactivity and mobility of the molecular species at the phase-transformation temperature and this effect is utilized for interparticle bonding in powder compacts. This note summarizes the results obtained in an attempt to utilize this technique to produce ceramic-metal composites. In this case, a decomposition reaction of a compound (which after decomposition yielded an oxide) was used to achieve interparticle bonding in ceramic-metal composites. The reactive hot pressing was carried out in a Phillips induction heating unit, using either a graphite or a high-temperature steel die which functioned as both the susceptor and the hot-pressing component. The die was heated to the desired temperature in a helium atmosphere. All cermets produced by this technique were based on alumina as the ceramic phase. Different metal phases such as iron, copper, and chromium were used to study the effect of varying the metal phase on the properties of the composite. a Mono-hydrate (Boehmite) was mixed with different proportions of metal powders (-325 mesh) in dry condition in a mortar and pestle. No special precautions were taken for proper mixing. The mixtures were then compacted into a cylindrical form having an approximate dimension of 1 cm in diameter and 1 cm in height. Lead Tariff.--The full House Ways and Means Committee approved H.R. 6089 which will have the effect of reducing the tariff on unwrought lead to 3% ad valorem, with a floor duty of 1.0625 cents per pound, compared with the currently effective rate of 3.5% ad valorem. Consideration is also being given to tariff rates on imports of red lead and litharge from Mexico. A consortium of domestic producers has appealed to the Office of the Special Trade Representative (STR) requesting a return to tariff schedules which were in effect prior to the concessions made effective on January 1. Mexican producers have filed a proposal in favor of lower duties, and the matter now awaits a ruling by the STR. Ferrous Scrap Exports.--After holding public hearings and receiving public comments in May, the Department of Commerce announced that it would not institute formal monitoring of ferrous scrap exports, as requested by the Ferrous Scrap Consumers Coalition. The Department said, however, that it would follow the trend of scrap exports and prices. Ferrous scrap prices are currently low and supplies are reported to be adequate.

On June 4, Kennecott Utah Copper (KUC)marked the centennial of the founding of the original company. Bill Champion is president and chief executive officer of KUC. He said, “What has happened during the past 100 years far surpassed even the most optimistic visions of men like Daniel C. Jackling and Robert Gemmell when they promoted the concept of mass production techniques for a low-grade deposit of copper ore. At that time, it was a totally new way of doing things and the mining leaders of that day scoffed at the idea. They said it would never work,” Champion said. The company will celebrate this once-in-a-lifetime occasion with a few special projects, mainly for the benefit of our employees, said Louie Cononelos, director of government and public affairs for KUC. The company has designed and minted a commemorative copper coin that reflects early steam shovel and locomotive operations on one side, and today’s modern electric shovels and huge haulage trucks on the other side. “The history of the company stems from the ores of the Bingham Canyon Mine. That coin has been encased as part of a10-panel brochure that captures the company’s 100 year history,” he said. KUC also developed special centennial banners and comparable framed posters that were displayed throughout its operations and at selected community locations that have enjoyed a long-time partnership and special relationship with the company. Introduction As the Sherritt Gordon property is still in the development stage, . it is rather difficult to write a proper account of the mining methods and milling practice that will be used. While the general scheme of operation will remain the same, there will undoubtedly be many minor changes to meet special conditions which we cannot forsee at the present time. Most of the work accomplished to date has followed the usual routine of preliminary development in the Canadian North. However, we have learned a few things which might be of use to others operating under similar conditions. The most important of these is the saving in power cost made possible by the use of Diesels as against steam power when using wood fuel, and the movement of freight by tractors when rail transportation is not available. Location The property i6 located about 90 miles north of The Pas, or 40 miles northeast of the Flin Flon mine. A branch line from Cranberry Portage, on the?C. N. railway, between Flin Flon and The Pas, connects the property with the outside.

Rock stress measurements have been carried out by the Mining Department, the Norw. Institute of Technology (NTH) since 1964. Before that time rock stress measurements were carried out at a few locations by the Swedish professor Hast as early as 1958. From the very beginning the NTH engagement in the rock stress measuring field has been very practically aimed, and we have all the time enjoyed a very good cooperation with the Norwegian mining industry. At a very early stage the industry realized that proper measurements with proper equipment could be a very valuable practical tool. Hence the industry also was willing to grant considerable funds for the education of experts and development of measuring techniques. Since 1964 measurements have been carried out in the great majority of Norwegian mines. During the last years a large number of measurements have also been carried out in connection with hydro-electric power plants, road tunnels etc.

"In February 2018, drawn in part by the states’ proud mining heritage, SME took its Annual Conference & Expo to Minneapolis, MN for the first time. More than 5,000 people and 554 exhibitors converged on the Minneapolis Convention Center for three days of networking, exhibiting and technical sessions.The state’s mining legacy, one that continues today, is fueled in large part by its vast iron ore resources in the northern part of the state. The historical significance of the mines in the Mesabi Range, otherwise known as the Iron Range north of Lake Superior, cannot be understated. “Mining is a way of life here,” said U.S. Congressman Rick Nolan of Minnesota’s 8th Congressional District. A native of the Iron Range, the three-term U.S. congressman was one of the featured speakers of the opening keynote session. “We like to think we contribute enormously to the well-being of this country and the world. We were the source of the iron ore and steel that helped win two world wars. And we like to think that we are part of the progress that has taken place in the United States ever since.” Nolan kicked off the keynote sessionthat focused on innovation and its part in the mining industry. The session included Rene Aquilar, vice president of corporate affairs and sustainability, Antofagasta Minerals Group; Bob Anderson, vice president for research and development, 3M; Rolf Weberg, executive director, Natural Resources Research Institute, University of Minnesota-Duluth and Christopher Beck, executive vice president and president, Nalco Water. The panel session looked at U.S. and global minerals production, and the importance of the United States to maintain a major role in the minerals industry, both as a producer and as a technology leader. The panel also touched on the global mining industry and the issues that impact mining around the world. Sustainability, the use of water in mining and earning a social license to operate were among the topics discussed by the panel.Speaking of the importance of mining, Nolan conceded that talking about the benefits of mining to the crowded auditorium at the SME conference might be akin to a preacher speaking to the choir, but, following the adage that all politics are local, he continued to illustrate his point by emphasizing the importance of mining to the Great Lakes.“A study by Homeland Security concluded that 13 percent of the nation’s GDP comes out of Lake Superior through the locks at Sault Ste. Marie and most of that is iron ore,” said Nolan. “That study found that, if those locks fail, it would create a national depression. It would put millions of people out of work. That ore and those minerals supply the steel mills, the auto industry, the heavy industrials. They are the heart of our economy. The study concluded that if the states that make up the Great Lakes were a nation, it would be the fourth largest economy in the world.”"

It takes the sands of the earth and melts them-now into glass, now into silver, minium or other lead or some substance useful to the artist or physician. By fire, minerals are disintegrated and copper produced; in fire is iron born and by fire is it subdued; by fire, gold is purified; by fire, stones are burned for the binding together of the walls of houses.... Fire is the immeasurable, uncontrollable element, concerning which it is hard to say whether it consumes more or produces more." Thus wrote Pliny in his "Natural History," that great collection of fact and error which constitutes the principal contemporary description of Roman technology and which until the seventeenth century was the authority most often quoted and requoted by those who wrote on metals, as on many other subjects.

This paper deals with concentration of hematitic-limonitic iron ores. The ore sample obtained from Karakuz (Turkey) contain:. about 40-46 I Fe. First, a low intensity magnetic separation process was employed to separate the strongly magnetic particles cf "-10+2 mm" and "-2+0.075 mm" size fractions and magnetic concentrates with 59.1 % Fe aid % 58.0 Fe were obtained respectively. The non-magnetics of both fractions were then fed to a nigh intensity permanent magnetic separator. The Fe contents of "-10+2 nun" and "2+0.075 mm" size fractions were increased from 28.2 to 51.13 and from 35.4 7. to 43.25 respectively after single pass. Easing on these results, it was concluded that the high intensity permanent magnetic separator could he used as a pre-concentrator f.7.1- hematitic-limonitic Karakuz iron ore.

In 1970, the U. S. Bureau of Mines contracted with Theodore Barry and Associates, a management consulting firm, to perform a one-year industrial engineering study of working-face hazards in underground bituminous coal mines. The field data was accumulated from industrial engineering observations in fifty underground mines. Supporting data for the analysis was derived primarily from the Bureau's fatal accident reports for the years 1966 through 1970. This report, Industrial Engineering Study of Hazards Associated with Underground Coal Mine Production, consists of three main parts: 1) The Fatal Accident Reports Analysis, 2) The Industrial Engineering Analysis, and 3) Multiflow Process Charts and Standard Time Data. The Fatal Accident Reports Analysis (Volume I, Section II) is based upon individual USBM fatal accident reports for 1966-1970. These were read, coded and computerized in terms of 84 significant variables. Cross-tabulations of these variables have been used to identify major underground hazards and to quantify significant causal factors. A very strong relationship was found to exist between fatal accident occurrences and low task experience. This led to a recommendation for formalized training, certification and supervision programs for miners. Victim compliance with federal regulations, mine regulations and supervisor instructions was analyzed, indicating that supervisors provide the most crucial communication link to workers. Thus, every attempt should be made to ensure the competence of immediate supervisors in the industry. Analysis of roof fall variables revealed a fatal propensity on the part of the miners to work under unsupported roof or under support conditions that are marginal. The technical approach to the problem is to make it physically impossible for a miner to work under these conditions; the behavioral approach is to ensure adequate training and develop proper safety attitudes among the miners. The Fatal Accident Reports Analysis revealed a need for normalizing data to interpret the results more accurately.

A record $19.7 billion in minerals was produced by United States industries in 1963. This was some $800 million above the previous high established in 1962. Preliminary statistics compiled by the U.S. Bureau of Mines show that most metals, nonmetals, and fuels gained both in value and volume of production. The 1963 total represents the largest value increase since 1956 and continues an upward trend begun in 1959. Product.ion and value of all mineral fuels rose, with anthracite registering a remarkable 20% value increase. Nonmetals advanced 591 in value, gains exceeding losses by 213 to 1 among individual commodities. Heavier industrial demand and the settling of labor difficulties were among the factors contributing to increased output of such materials as iron ore, bauxite, molybdenum, lead, and zinc, which accounted for most in€ the growth in metal output. Silver prices continued to rise and, as a result, production value of that metal gained 132,.

This paper is one of a series , dealing with mining methods and costs , sponsored and published by the U. S. Bureau of Mines . Papers of this series are written by engineers and executives of mining companies , at the solicitation of the Bureau , and in accordance with an outline prepared by Bureau engineers , for the purpose of securing uniform presentation and conformable data . The property of the Alaska Juneau Gold Mining Co. is situated near the city of Juneau , Alaska , in what is known as the Harris mining district . Wholesale mining operations have been adopted on a large scale and 10,000 to 11,000 tons per day of gold- bearing ore are mined and sent to concentrators near Juneau . In addition to gold , the ore yields 0.6 ounce of silver and 13.0 pounds of lead to each ounce of gold recovered .

The assessment of liquefaction vulnerability is crucial to understanding the potential consequences of a tailings dam failure. The “Plewes method” is a relatively well-known and simple screening method to assess liquefaction potential based on results of cone penetration testing (CPT) which may be complemented with laboratory testing. The objective of the current work is to emphasise the screening nature of the method and its uncertainties when applied in tailings deposits. Specifically, the paper highlights the difficulties in assessing the intrinsic uncertainty of the method and the additional uncertainty that results from variations of the slope of the critical state line (λ10) along the depth of the CPT sounding. The results of the method are too uncertain for detailed characterisation of tailings even when a relatively low intrinsic uncertainty is assumed. However, the method characterises weaker soils with lower uncertainty (although still too high for detailed characterisation) than stronger soils. The uncertainty of the method is negatively affected by the relatively low λ10 values that are typical of nonplastic tailings. It is suggested that the results of the method should be presented in scatter plots in which the spread of the data is consistent with the uncertainty of the method.

The monetary metals , gold and silver , have recently been the object of such general interest that the United States Bureau of Mines has received many inquiries regarding them . Though requests for technologic information have been numerous , they have been exceeded in number by those concerned with economic aspects of these metals . The nature of the latter communications indicates that the public is not generally aware that various Bureau publications are available which deal with the economic situation of gold and silver . For this reason , it is deemed advisable to present a brief résumé of the papers which are obtainable from the Bureau or the Superintendent of Documents , together with the text of three articles recently prepared by the Director , reprints of which are not otherwise available . The Bureau of Mines compiles figures showing mine production of gold and silver , by districts and States , and cooperates with the Bureau of the Mint in determining the total annual output in the United States as a whole . 3 It recently established an annual canvass to determine the consumption of silver in the arts and industries of the United States , and published an economic paper covering such use in 1928 and 1929 , followed by an information circular on silver consumption by industry during the 2 years subsequent . A 4-year record is thus provided for those interested in utilization of silver . The Bureau has also published summarizations of all available data upon world production since 1493 of gold and of silver . It has , furthermore , rendered available a compilation of production- data of silver mines of the world , and an analysis of it , showing the proportions of silver and other metals contained in all the ores from which silver is derived . " All of these papers are concerned solely with putting into readily usable form statistical data and other factual material ; they do not offer theories or express opinions upon controversial questions related to these metals . Three other recent papers concerned with gold and silver are presented below in order to put them in shape for distribution by the United States Bureau of Mines .
