Bulk density and grade were determined on a variety of ore samples from the Mount Tom Price iron ore mine and the interrelationship between these properties and porosity deduced.Variable porosity is responsible for the wide scatter of data points and low accuracy of prediction in the grade of a single sample from grade/bulk density relationships.However, with a sufficient number of such data points, as from a nuclear geophysical borehole logging operation, the mean ore grade in an exploration-type drill hole (~63 per cent Fe) could be determined by regressionanal~sis with 95 per cent confidence intervals of approximately ± 1 per cent Fe. From the same logging operation, utilizing core data for calibration of the probe, the -mean fractional porosity for the drill hole (0·19 ± 0·016 at 95 per cent confidence interval) was deduced. This is less accurate than the corresponding result obtained on core material in the laboratory (0·20 ± 0·005).The range of porosity was from 0·08 for dense, high grade sectIOns of the ore, to 0·28 for friable ore of high grade or goethitic ore of lower grade. Shale band porosity ranged from 0·15 to anomalously high values of 0·48 believed to be caused by leaching of iron minerals from the shale. Porosity values for the iron ore component of the deposit are comparable to those found for the Cockatoo Island (W.A.) mine, and for sections of the Krivoy Rog (Ukraine) iron ore deposit of the Soviet Union.

"Stillwater Mining Company is the only U.S. producer of platinum group metals (PGMs) and the largest producer outside of South Africa and Russia. The Company controls a considerable portion of the J-M Reef and is currently developing the ""Blitz Project,"" which will provide a main haulage level, ore pass systems, backfill plants, and flow-through ventilation to increase production and ensure sustainable extraction of this critical strategic mineral. While driving two sub-parallel footwall laterals to about 8,125 m (26,000 ft) long, one of the development drifts experienced a massive fall in a geologically disturbed area created by a dike intrusion. Combinations of a void fill material (Tekseal), polyurethane injection, fore poling coupled with steel arches, and supplemental bolting allow safe and efficient advance through this geologically disturbed zone. The J-M Reef is a PGMbearing reef deposit located in the Stillwater Complex near NyeMontana. The mining property and location are shown in Figure 2.The Blitz Project is named after the Blitz mining claims and is developing the Eastern extent of the J-M Reef Project., This consists of a 5.5 m (18 ft) diameter TBM drive on the SOE (1,562 m (5,000 ft) above sea level and east of the shaft collar) and a 4.7 x 4.7 m (15 x 15 ft) drill and blast heading on the 5,600E (1,750 m (5,600 ft) above sea level and east of the shaft collar). The Benbow Decline will be completed running perpendicular to the TBM by drilling and blasting methods. The TBM drift will be used for exploration drilling, ventilation, and will serve as the main haulage level. The 56E will be used for ventilation and exploration drilling. The Benbow decline will serve as the exhaust drift."

Stratabound copper ore bodies in thick Proterozoic metamorphosed sedimentary and volcanic rocks at the Tong Kuang Yu Mine in southern Shanxi Province of China were considered as possibly being amenable to block cave mining. Initial evaluation of caving characteristics was based upon old calyx drilling records, limited underground mining experience and geological mapping, a few diamond drill holes and measurements in surface subsidence features. Classification and mapping distribution of rock quality types aided in mine design, prediction of fragment sizing and explosive requirements, cave assist and ground support requirements. Comparison is made between early feasibility predictions and actual mine experience.

"The demand for minerals and metals is increasing. Head grades of ore bodies are dropping. Remaining ores are becoming finer grained, more complex, and more logistically challenging. Mineral processing – in particular comminution – already consumes a huge amount of energy. But in 20 years’ time, it will require about six times as much energy as today to meet the world’s mineral demand.Unless we do something different.As minerals professionals, it is our job to find that “something different”. The world is relying on us. Of course, we must look for new breakthrough technologies and techniques. We must find them, and we will find them – most likely in surprising areas.But what if we also already know how to make 30-50% improvements to efficiency? Just by using existing technologies, by applying modern analytical techniques, by custom designing our plants, by applying manufacturing principles, by breaking down our management silos between disciplines.The thing is, industry professionals already know this. Yet – in spite of a lot of intelligent people trying very hard – we just can’t seem to make it happen.This discussion considers why, despite our best efforts, we don’t get the best out of what we already have. Why we are wasting energy and money. Once we understand why, we can set about unlocking that value and improving industry productivity and energy efficiency. We will discuss the role that professionals and volunteer professional organisations like CMP and CEEC can play in catalysing the changes."

"The Mount Milligan Mine, owned by Thompson Creek Metals Company Inc. (TCM), started operations in September of 2013. It is located between the communities of Fort St. James and Mackenzie and is the first major metal mine to open in British Columbia in 15 years. Based on reserves as of January 1, 2014, it has an estimated 22 year mine life with 2.1 billion pounds of copper and 6 million ounces of gold in reserves. Like all commissioning operations, there have been issues achieving design throughput and recovery due to flow sheet design, equipment failures, control philosophy, and reagent scheme. Efforts to improve overall mill performance include equipment modifications, reagent screening and testing, and grind size testing. Applying these changes to the mill and working closely with the mine has resulted in continuous improvement each month as Mount Milligan looks to achieve the nominal design capacity of 60,000 dry metric tonnes per day in the later part of 2015. Considerable focus is being placed into ensuring size reduction equipment is utilized effectively. Additional modifications and tests are being undertaken to steadily improve processes and alleviate restrictions in the mill. This paper will discuss the start-up and present ramp-up history of Mount Milligan, the current mill processes, and the steps taken to achieve expected production numbers.OPERATION BACKGROUNDMount Milligan is an open-pit copper and gold operation wholly owned and operated by Thompson Creek Metals. It is located approximately 155km northwest of Prince George, British Columbia, between the communities of Mackenzie and Fort St. James. The copper-gold porphyry deposit contains a Measured and Indicated Mineral Resource of 706.7 Mt at 0.18% Cu and 0.33 g/t Au, containing 2.84 billion lb. copper and 7.50 million oz. gold. Mine life is currently estimated at 22.1 years (“Feasibility Update – Mt. Milligan,” 2009). The mill is designed to process 60,000 dry metric tonnes per day and produce 400 dry metric tonnes of concentrate per day averaging 25.5% Cu and 40 ppm Au. Concentrate is delivered by truck and trailer to Mackenzie followed by rail to Vancouver for overseas shipping to various customers.Mount Milligan is considered a “zero discharge” operation meaning no process or surface water will be discharged to the environment. As well, stockpiling is very limited and is only permitted for a short period of time. This scenario presents several unique challenges. Scheduling of ore/waste production must be carefully planned as waste rock is used to build the tailings storage facility (TSF). Reagent selection is also important as persistent chemicals will have a tendency to build up in reclaim water which feeds the process water tank."

That electricity is an important and valuable agent, the limit of whose capacity for utilisation is as yet unknown, is a truism; although enormous advances have been made, the possible developments are yet greater. Mining, along with other industries, shares already to a large extent in the practical utilisation of this agent. Electrical engineers have been employed for several years past in developing and applying electricity to all classes of machinery, and for every purpose where power is required and in no instance, that the writer is aware of, has its use been curtailed in favour of any other agency now known, while extensions are continually made. The first modern electric motor was shown at the Vienna Exhibition of 1873, and it was used to work a pump through a mile length of cable but it was not before 1878, that an electric motor was put into daily commercial use by Messrs. Chretian and Felix to work a beet sugar hoist. This early plant effected a saving of 40 % as compared with hand work.In 1879, the first Electric Railway was constructed for the Berlin Exhibition, and in the same year, Mr. T. A. Edison was running an experimental line at Menlo Park. The first electric line opened for the public, was constructed by Siemens and Halske, in 1881, at Lichtenfelde, and was 11 miles in length.

When SME’s 2006 Arizona Conference convened in December at the Hilton El Conquistador Resort in Tucson, AZ, there was considerable excitement among the 387 attendees. There was a noticeable buzz surrounding the progress of Phelps Dodge’s Safford copper mine in southern Arizona, one of the first new major copper mines to be permitted in more than 30 years in the United States. There were also plenty of good feelings about the mining industry in general. Commodity prices remained high and with no signs of a slowdown in the immediate future. Things were good in Arizona. But there were also cautionary tones at the conference and the Mining Foundation of the Southwest banquet that preceded it.

Joints may be taken into account when using numerical modeling as an aid to mine design by embedding joints in the model. When using the popular finite element method, say UT3PC, a pre-analysis step is necessary, Step 0. This step is for the computation of equivalent properties of a representative elementary volume of jointed rock (REV) in the model. This Step 0 is taken before Steps 1, 2 and 3 for specification of a rock properties file, generation of the mesh, and model analysis are taken. A brief explanation of equivalent properties and several examples aid in explaining the details of Step 0. Focus is on procedures, input files, and output to show ease of computation. Theoretical details are relegated to references (e.g. Pariseau 2022). Comparisons of safety factor distributions about example mine excavations with direct scaling from mine observations then offer some insights concerning equivalent properties, especially strengths.

Hargraves (1983) has reviewed the phenomenon of instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas with special attention to Australian occurrences. The purpose of this discussion is to highlight some problems and omissions in his review that reflect particularly on the authors' structural geological investigations of outburst-prone coal seams.It is surprising to find that much of the authors' reported work has either been glossed over or the results distorted by Hargraves (1983) and it is, therefore, important to clarify the contribution that structural analysis of coal seams can make.For many years it has been known that faults provided preferred loci for gas outbursts (for example, Briggs 1920-21) but the roie that faults played in outburstprone seams was unclear. The present authors reviewed the association of faults and outbursts drawing upon local investigations and the world-wide literature (Shepherd et aI., 1981), and discussed some wideranging aspects that result from the high coincidence of faults and outburst sites. Without repeating large segments of this article the authors will discuss four aspects of coal seam faulting and fracturing.

To recover the coal resources of high-sulphur anthracite in Jincheng Mining Area, underground coal gasification (UCG) of No. 15 seam in Fenghuangshan Coal Mine was proposed. The feasibility of the project was confirmed by investigations of occurrence conditions, coal properties, and roof conditions, as well as experimental studies and theoretical analysis. It was found that UCG technology is appropriate to be adopted in the mining of the No. 15 seam, due to the stable rock conditions, simple geological structure and hydrogeology, the high carbon content of the coal, non-cohesiveness, medium-thermal stability, high ash fusion temperature, and weak reactivity with CO2. Further factors are the characteristics of the immediate roof, which consists of 9.11 m of limestone and mudstone with a compact structure and low permeability, and 4.27 m of dominantly mudstone with low permeability.

Os aços com um alto teor de Mn (15-30%) e os elementos de liga, Si e Al, apresentam plasticidade excepcional devido à geração de maclas de deformação (efeito TWIP) ou múltiplas transformações martensíticas (efeito TRIP). Este trabalho avaliou a evolução microestrutural, a formação da textura e sua influência sobre o comportamento mecânico de um aço contendo 17%Mn-0,06%C laminado a frio com reduções de 45% e 90%, e recozimentos a 700°C durante tempos diferentes. A microestrutura foi analisada por microscopia óptica e eletrônica de varredura, EBSD e difração de raios X. A redução um frio favorece a formação da martensita a'. No aço recozido estão presentes as fases martensita a? e e e austenita. O limite de escoamento e de resistência à tração alcançaram 750 e 950 MPa, respectivamente, com o alongamento total de 45%, confirmando sua alta capacidade de encruamento. A reversão da martensita para austenita ocorre simultaneamente com a recristalização desta.

"In the autumn of 1977 Bethlehem management initiated feasibility studies on recovery of by-product molybdenum from concentrate produced at the existing Highland Valley mining operation. Over the fall and winter months test work was carried forward concurrent with design, flowsheet, equipment specification and cost studies. The decision was made to go ahead with a 200 ton-per-day treatment plant. Construction started in early 1978 and progressed to an initial start-up stage in mid-June. Full operational status was reached in August 1978. Operational results through August 1979 are presented. INTRODUCTIONBethlehem Copper Corporation operates a 20,000 ton-per-day Open Pit Mine and Flotation Plant located in the Highland Valley, some 30 air miles Southwest of Kamloops and 20 miles Southeast of Ashcroft, B.C.Two open pits are worked; the Iona Pit with limited reserves of higher Mo content, and the lower grade, more extensive Jersey Pit. Upwards of 150 tons per day of bornite-chalcopyrite bulk concentrate is produced, ranging 0.25% to 1.5% in molybdenum grade depending on the area mined."

Airblast overpressure levels can commonly be increased by up to 20 decibels (dBL) by the effects of meteorology, due to inversions and wind shear. Existing atmospheric refraction models can provide a good evaluation of the effects of meteorology, but have been limited in the accuracy of their outputs by the accuracy of the meteorological data that is available for input. This paper uses case histories from open-pit coal mine blasting in the Hunter Valley area of Australia to provide examples of increases in airblast due to inversions, wind shear, and a combination of both. It gives details of our experience of the accuracy with which predictions and assessments can be made using meteorological data of various levels of accuracy, and on the design buffer that is required to prevent the exceedence of airblast limits. The accuracy of meteorological prediction and assessment will shortly be improved by the use of sounding equipment that gives continuous measurements of temperature and wind velocity at significant levels above the ground. The paper also gives details of an industry funded research project that aims to permit the effective use of this data at distances many kilometres (km) (miles) from the location of the sounding equipment, and to develop a short term predictive model that will permit the amount of meteorological reinforcement that will occur at firing time to be determined before a decision is made to tie up a shot.

The oxygen pressure in equilibrium with silver and Ag2O-B2O3 melts has been measured between 800' and 900°C, to obtain the thermodynamic properties of the liquid. The compound Ag20. 4B20:1 appears to exist in the liquid, which shows marked heat content and entropy effects. A KNOWLEDGE of the thermodynamic properties of binary liquid silicates, borates, and phosphates would be of considerable assistance in the interpretation of the behavior of multi-component metallurgical slags. However, the literature contains comparatively few studies of the thermodynamics of binary slags. The system Ag20-B,O, attracted our attention as it was known to give a single liquid phase,',' in which high contents of silver could be obtained (up to 61 pct Ag according to Foex2). Further, it would be expected that the partial pressure of oxygen over melts in equilibrium with metallic silver could be used to determine the activity of Ag2O in the Ag,O-B,O, system. In many respects, it may be expected that the reaction of a basic oxide with boric oxide would be analogous to its reaction with silica. Liquid immiscibility frequently occurs in both borate and silicate systems. With B2O3 and SiO reaction with a basic oxide presumably involves a breakdown of the three-dimensional network of the acid oxide by reaction with oxygen atoms common to more than one silicon or boron atom. Ag2O-B2O3 was therefore investigated as a model of a slag system in the hope that its thermodynamic properties would assist in understanding those of other systems. Several methods for determining the activity of a component in a slag have been described in the literature. Chang and Derge" used high temperature electromotive force measurements to obtain the activity of SiO2 in CaO-SiO2 and Ca0-Al203-Si02 slags, but the cell reaction in their work is not clear. low has used rate of volatilization and vapor pressure measurements combined with phase diagrams to obtain activities in the systems KO-SiO,, Na,O-SiO, and Li,O-SiO," and PbO-SiO26 Taylor and Chipman7 extrapolated their results for the distribution of FeO between liquid iron and CaO (+Mg0)-FeO-SiOl slags to obtain the activity of FeO in the binary FeO-SiO2 system. In principle, one of the most direct methods for obtaining the activity of a metallic oxide in a phase is by comparison of the equilibrium oxygen pressure for the system metal-pure oxide with that of metal oxide-containing phase. Schenck and othersa have studied the stabilization of Ag2O on combination with other oxides (MO,) in the solid state by measurements of the oxygen pressure in systems of the type Ag-Ag,O-xM0,-MOy-0, (gas). Schuhmann and Ensio" have determined the activity of FeO in iron silicate slags in equilibrium with solid iron, using CO/CO2 mixtures to establish known partial pressure of oxygen. Although the method gives the activity of FeO without ambiguity, the slag is not a binary system, and interpretation of the results in terms of the hypothetical binary system FeO-SiO, is not possible. If a metal is solid at temperatures at which the properties of the slag containing its oxide are to be studied, this method has the considerable experimental advantage that the metal can be used as the container for the slag, and contamination by contact with refractories is avoided. In this work, crucibles for Ag2-B,O, melts were made from silver, and the liquid brought to equilibrium with definite pressures of oxygen gas. The oxygen pressure PO, thus fixes the activity of Ag20 in the liquid silver borate. For the reaction at a given temperature. is substantially constant, is directly proportional to the square root of the equilibrium oxygen pressure. Varying the oxygen pressure changed the silver oxide content of the liquid and it was possible to obtain the activity of Ag2O over a range of composition. Experimental Procedure In principle, the method consisted of bringing melts in silver crucibles or boats to equilibrium at a fixed temperature under a definite pressure of oxygen and analyzing the glass after solidification. Close spatial relationships between the deposits of the Etheridge Goldfield (23 000 kg of bullion) and various regional geological and geophysical features suggest that genesis of the ore deposits was a multi-stage process that started with magmatic and metamorphic stages in the mid-Proterozoic, climaxed with structural and hydrothermal stages in the late Palaeozoic and terminated with an oxidation enrichment stage in the Cainozoic. Acceptance of this hypothesis permits classification of the Georgetown region into areas likely to contain deposits of the Etheridge type and those unlikely to do so. Consequently there is little scope for the discovery of extensions of this field. However, the stratigraphic interval between the source rocks of the Etheridge field and stratigraphically bigger host rocks of the Croydon field may contain disseminated replacement gold deposits of the Carlin type. The potential host (pyritic carbonaceous and locally dolomitic siltstone of the Candlow Formation) is locally faulted and cut by granitoids and the extension of a mineralised, long-standing zone of structural weakness.

We have developed a novel method - at the laboratory scale - comprising an ion-exchange separation and a membrane-electrolysis step for the purpose of zero-waste regeneration of spent HCl pickling liquors originating from hot-dip galvanizing of common steels. It is aimed at the parallel regeneration of HCl and iron. Experiments revealed that iron can be electrodeposited at high current efficiencies by maintaining the following conditions: 0.04-0.08 M HCl, 500-1000 A/m2, 20°C and stationary electrolyte in a conventional cell. Zinc in the solution did not disturb the deposition of iron, however it contaminated the product and it poisons the anion-exchange membrane required to tackle acidity during electrolysis. For a preliminary separation, anion-exchange tests were carried out to produce pure iron solutions. Beyond the equilibrium studies, column experiments were carried out showing that low flow rates of the loading solution and the ~1.5 M HCl eluent are essential for separation.

The upper amphibolite-grade mctasediments of thc rinaroo area, North Queensland, form part of a regional aurcole to the large Tinaroo Batholith and are the stratigraphic equivalents of the Hodgkinson Formation of gencrally low metamorphic grade. There is no evidence of any lithological unconformity.The higher grade metasediments have a more complex deformation history than is typical for thc surrounding region and this may bc due to one or a combination of two factors; an additional strain componcnt associated wilh the intrusion of Ihe Tinaroo Batholith, or a more marked finite strain response to the overall regional stress field within hotter. more ductile rocks.Four deformational events can be characterized within Ihc Tinaroo Area. Close to Ihe Tinaroo Batholith D1 and D2, arc so strongly developed that they disrupl the continuily of Ihe original Iithological layering. In the aureole region, D1 is strongly overprinted and its original fabric intensity is obscured, but both D2 and D3 display a mappable decrease in intensity away from the granite margin. These three deformations occurred during Carboniferous or early Permian time. D4 is later and only patchily developed.The broad, moderate pressure metamorphic aureole surrounding the Tinaroo Batholith is a typical of the CairnsCooktown group of Permo-Carboniferous granitoids. which usually develop narrow, lower pressure contact aureoles. Two periods of metamorphism are distinguishable. The first reached peak temperatures somewhat greater than 520°C, the second temperatures around 620-630° C immediately adjacent to the granite contact.Several cale-silicate lenses containing scattered scheelite mineralization occur within the area. Scheelite appears to have crystallized at the same time as the cale-silicate minerals, its appearance coinciding with the intrusion of the Tinaroo Batholith. Unlike many "skarn-type" scheelite deposits, the scheelite-bearing cale-silicates are Fe-poor, with no positive correlation between total Fe and W.

"A new device has been developed to directly measure the bubble loading of particle-bubble aggregates in industrial flotation machines, both mechanical flotation cells as well as flotation column cells. The bubble loading of aggregates allows for in-depth analysis of the operating performance of a flotation machine in terms of both pulp/collection zone and froth zone performance. This paper presents the methodology along with an example showing the excellent reproducibility of the device and an analysis of different operating conditions of the device itself.The device has been used to investigate the froth selectivity of attached particles. Simultaneous measurements were made using a different froth recovery measurement technique in the same flotation cell. A comparison of these techniques shows that in this case, particles are selectively detached from bubbles at or near the pulp-froth interface.INTRODUCTIONA flotation cell can be considered to operate in two distinct phases or zones; namely the pulp or collection phase and the froth phase. The pulp zone is responsible for the formation of hydrophobic particle-bubble aggregates, whilst the froth phase is responsible for the separation of these aggregates from surrounding suspended hydrophobic and hydrophilic particles. Thus, the froth phase is the grade determining phase in flotation. A measurement of the bubble load (the mass of particles attached to air bubbles in units of mass/volume) will enable the analysis of the performance of both the collection zone at creating bubble-particle aggregates and also the froth zone at separating these aggregates from surrounding pulp.A measure of froth zone performance that has been used extensively in flotation research is the Froth Recovery, Rf, of a particular system. Froth recovery is defined as the mass of particles collected in the concentrate launder by true flotation as a fraction of the mass of particles entering the froth phase. The measurement of bubble load allows for this term to be calculated easily, rather than having to go through the laborious task of, for example, changing froth depths to determine this performance criterion (Contini et al., 1988; Vera et al., 1999b; Feteris et al., 1987)."

The stability of steep embankments is a major safety issue in open pit mining, highway passes, and earth filled dams. A failure in any one of these situations could mean a loss of very expensive equipment, a long term inconvenience, and more importantly, a loss of life. These possible catastrophes could be avoided by installing a reliable real time monitoring system. Robotic total stations (RTSs) give one possible cost effective solution to creating a near real time monitoring system. Repeated surveys at predetermined time intervals can automatically generate warnings if slope movements exceed a preset tolerance level. The variation in atmospheric refraction, combined with possible instabilities in reference targets, can make a monitoring system based on RTSs produce false alarms. A methodology has been developed at the Canadian Centre for Geodetic Engineering (CCGE) for reducing these systematic error effects.
