"PROJECTThe “Caltanissetta” Tunnel is part of the ANAS S.p.A (National Autonomous Roads Corporation) $ 1.3 Billion Highway 640 Caltanissetta-Agrigento (Sicily, Italy) Rehabilitation Project, consisting in upgrading of 62 km (40 miles) of highway. The Italian multinational construction company Cooperativa Muratori & Cementisti di Ravenna, is the General Contractor for the design and build contract. The highway S.S. 640 starts from Porto Empedocle, to the intersection with the Motorway A 19 Catania-Palermo.The entire project, double carriageway designed for speed 70-120 km/h and maximum longitudinal slope of 4.2%, is divided into two sections. First Section: just finished and opened to traffic. Second Section: mainly involving the province of Caltanissetta, length about 28 km (18 miles), works started in 2013. This second section includes the most challenging work of all the project, the “Caltanissetta” tunnel consisting of two separate tubes, each with 3.9 km length and inside diameter of 13.50 m, in order to host 2 traffic lines and an emergency line. HORIZONTAL AND VERTICAL ALIGNMENT - GEOLOGY AND HYDROGEOLOGYThe plan alignment of “Caltanissetta” tunnel is formed by two tubes which are located at a minimum mutual distance of 22 m to a maximum of 63 m, with n. 9 pedestrian and n. 4 road cross passages; ventilation shafts are not provided. Overburden over portals area is about 5 m till a maximum of 120 m. Tunnel sections have variable longitudinal slope from 2.6% to 0.5%, transversal slope of about 3.5%. Right tube length is 3,992 m, left tube length is 3,877 m."

In Rotterdam a number of underground parking facilities have been built and are under development in the inner city, and in the suburbs. These parking facilities are located at already densely built areas. The design of these constructions has to take into account the impact of the building activities and that of the final construction on the surroundings. In this paper some examples of the different building methods of newly realized underground parking facilities are described, and problems that occurred during the construction are pointed out. In the soil conditions as present in Rotterdam the cost effectiveness of underground facilities can be improved by deepening the parking facility, and at the same time reducing the surface area so that the total parking volume remains constant. In this way the total volume of the diaphragm walls and the costs of the project is reduced.

A GOOD idea of the magnitude of the underground operations at Climax can be gained from the following figures. A little more than 43,000,000 tons has been drawn from the mine and of this amount, 40,500,000 tons has been drawn in the past ten years and 12,000,000 tons was drawn in two of the war years. The maximum daily average output over a period of one month was slightly more than 20,000 tons but during this period, production on certain days was 24,000 tons, and 9000 tons was produced in a single eight-hour shift. This production came chiefly from 260 draw points although all of them were never in operation at one time. The haulage system for these draw points is made up of 7.5 miles of 36-in.-gauge track, and 131,000 ft. of subsidiary drifts and 44,000 ft. of raises have been driven to develop the necessary broken ore reserves for this high production. Power consumption is often considered an index of operating efficiency. In 1943, the year of maximum production, the mine power consumption was 19,223,000 kw.-hr. or 3 kw.-hr. per ton; in 1945 it was 3.5 kw.-hr. per ton. To handle this amount of power, there are four transformer stations and one switch station in the mine. Mr. Garrabrant, the chief electrician, describes the electrical installation in this issue.

This report presents recommended guidelines and regulatory changes applicable to electrical installations in underground oil shale mines. These recommendations are based on information gathered from oil shale operators, government agencies, and other knowledgeable sources familiar with existing plans for mining systems and electrical installations, and on present understanding of the problems and hazards associated with oil shale mining. Additional discussions of specific electrical problems related to oil shale mining are also presented. These specific problems include: ? Ground fault current levels ? Permissible electric wheel motors ? Permissible batteries and electric starting systems ? Intrinsically safe instrumentation and applicability of existing test standards.

In Australia, responsibility for abandoned mines can be unclear. With a few exceptions, state and territory governments have become responsible for abandoned mines on Crown land and private landholders are responsible for abandoned mines on freehold land. Abandoned mines pose risks and opportunities across the full suite of sustainability themes (environmental, human health and safety, socio-economic and community development) after mining ceases.Across Australia, there are more than 50 000 abandoned mines recorded, ranging in size from individual shafts to large polluting open cut mines. Addressing the safety and environmental impacts of these sites, as well as the socio-economic development opportunities of significant rehabilitation projects, requires the implementation of effective policies and programs. Qualitatively defined graded scales or ‘rubrics’ have been used for many years in student assessment and increasingly in the performance assessment of other sectors (Davidson, 2005). While risk-based maturity models have been used for safety prioritisation (Westrum, 1993; Hudson, 2007; DRET, 2008; Hancock, 2010) and evaluation of organisational development (Esteves et al, 2010), this paper is the first to adapt maturity models for the evaluation of abandoned mine rehabilitation programs in Australia.In this paper, we used indicators based on the national policy for abandoned mines to assess the maturity of abandoned mine programs. Fourteen elements of maturity were identified (Unger et al, 2012) under the five chapters of the national policy for abandoned mines (MCMPR and MCA, 2010). Jurisdictions were then evaluated and ranked on their maturity on the basis of information that was web-accessible. Information transparency of abandoned mines policies and programs is in itself one element of the maturity chart. Each jurisdiction in Australia was compared with one another and with a Canadian jurisdiction; the British Columbia (BC) Crown Contaminated Sites Program (CCSP), which represents leading practice (Unger, 2009; Unger et al, 2012).Our research found that in some jurisdictions in Australia there is little or no information on abandoned mine programs or individual abandoned mine sites on government websites, while other jurisdictions provided very detailed program information on planning, funding and implementation. Each jurisdiction in Australia, for which web-based information was available, had some elements where they were more mature than other Australian jurisdictions. For some elements, maturity ranked equivalent to the BC CCSP, but most Australian jurisdictions were less mature. There was only one element where a single Australian jurisdiction ranked higher than the BC program in maturity. Legacy mine policies, programs, priorities and funding information via departmental websites are easier to find in some jurisdictions, indicating progression toward greater transparency and more mature programs. A systematic approach to monitoring and evaluating abandoned mines programs is essential for accountability as it can demonstrate liability reduction over time and continual improvement. The increase in f.o.b. mine prices of coal from $5/ton to over $18/ton in five years [1] has increased the significance of transportation costs. Coals produced in the vicinity of the consumer bear a much lower transport cost than those produced in the west. This differential may be used for flue gas desulfurization, other cleaning, or further processing of local coals. To the extent that western coals are cheaper to produce and have a lower sulfur content, they offset the locational disadvantage. To the extent that they have a lower heating value, the disadvantage is exercabated. Given the other conditions, an accurate analysis of transport costs will help suggest the location of coal mining and the moue of transport both transport costs and tariffs have risen. Together they have increased delivered coal prices, altered the balance between the use of coal and other fuels, helped to alter the location of mining activity, and put pressure on consumers to examine the cost effectiveness of alternative transport modes. Transportation options for long distance coal movements include rail, barge, pipeline, and EHV transmission lines. A summary of system parameters is shown in Table 2.1. Barge transport, pneumatic and slurry pipelines are discussed elsewhere in this report. Together with EHV, they have been the subject of previous studies [2,3,4]. Slurry pipelines have been shown to be especially useful where rails are not available [2] but the technical problems of dewatering, handling, and utilization of lines [5] remain unresolved. They are discussed in Section 3. Barge transportation depends on the location of the mine and consumer with respect to the waterway system. One drawback of barge shipment is interruptions due to winter, and low or high water conditions. Mine mouth power generation followed by EHV transmission of over 500 miles has been shown to be the most expensive means of delivering an equivalent amount of energy to consumers [2].

"After many years of safety activity in the United States in one form or another it becomes increasingly evident to those in contact with safety work that to achieve continuous good results in accident prevention there must be an aggressive organization behind the safety movement at each mine with fairly definite plan and policy. A study of the methods used by various companies and the results they have attained will be of value to the common cause of safety promotion.A study has been made of the safety records of the Menominee iron range in the Lake Superior district, and of data from the county mine inspector's report. Several companies on this iron range that have attained a certain measure of success in their work of accident prevention have given data, and a summary of their safety methods is presented.The Menominee iron range of Michigan lies in the southern portion of the upper peninsula of Michigan, bordering on Wisconsin. It consists of two main. divisions--the West Menominee Range, situated in Iron County in the vicinity of Iron River and Crystal Palls, and the East Menominee range situated in Dickinson County in the neighborhood or iron Mountain, Mich. The mines about Iron River and Crystal Falls are peculiarly subject to fires in a carbonaceous, sulphur-bearing black slate which appears in the footwall. This gives considerable trouble because fires in this material start from spontaneous heating. The methods of mining are top slicing and open stoping, working on benches along the sides of the stopes. The character of the ground varies from medium Soft ore to relatively hard ore which permits open stoping. Approximately one-third of the operating mines are equipped with a fan for main mechanical ventilation. The remainder are ventilated by natural draft. The East Menominee range is the older, top slicing having been used there for a number of years, and the timber mats have boon well developed. In common with all districts, some companies pay more attention to safety than others, although, those which do riot have the best records do pay some attention to safety.During the past three years the annual production per man employed has remained about constant, but in many mines a general decrease is shown in the accident record. The variation in the results attained can be ascribed mainly to the earnestness with which accident-prevention work is pursued, essentially regardless of the method of mining used. This is shown to be generally true, because the record indicates a steady decrease in one mine with an active safety department, while in adjoining mines with the same kind of ground and method of mining but where not such intensive attention has been paid to safety work, the accident record is high."

O desenvolvimento de aços baixa liga e alta resistência (ARBL) tornou-se um desafio constante para a indústria. Enfoques como o aumento de resistência mecânica para espessuras menores tem um forte apelo técnico-científico. Modificações na composição química bem como o refino de grão são ações que apresentam um benéfico sinergismo neste sentido. Um elemento que atua nos dois sentidos supracitados é o nióbio (Nb), pois sua presença na composição química durante o processamento termomecânico promove o refino de grão e possibilita a obtenção de chapas de menores espessuras e com excelentes propriedades mecânicas. Entretanto, a adição do Nb como elemento de liga ficou restrita a percentuais em peso abaixo de 0.05%, devido à redução na soldabilidade encontrada em aços desenvolvidos com técnicas ineficientes de redução do carbono. Contudo, com técnicas mais efetivas de redução utilizadas na aciaria, torna uma alternativa o desenvolvimento de aços com maiores percentuais em peso de Nb, visando a produção de aços com maior resistência mecânica, menores espessuras e com boa soldabilidade. O objetivo do trabalho é apresentar resultados acerca da influência do Nb soldabilidade de um aço API 5L X70.

ABSTRACT: In June 2001, a fatal rockburst affected a longwall face in the Houillères du Bassin de Lorraine (HBL), France. Subsequently, a large operation of in situ stress measurements by overcoring was carried out with two main objectives: providing input data for the back analysis of the dynamic event and characterising the stress field in the next panels to be mined for identifying other potential high-risk zones. This paper makes a synthesis of the results of the overcoring tests performed and discusses those results in connection with the mining context, numerical model predictions, laboratory rock test results and microseismic activity. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Im Juni 2001 hat ein Bergschlag eine Kohlengrube des Houillères du Bassin de Lorraine (HBL, Lothringen, Frankreich) schwer beschädigt. Nach diesem Unfall sind Spannungsmessugen durch Überborung durchegeführt worden, mit zwei Hauptziele : 1/ Daten zu liefern für die Retro-analyse des dynamischen Gebirgsschlag und 2/ die Spannungen in den zukünftigen Ausbauen so gut wie möglich zu charakterisieren, um eventuele andere Risikozonen festzustellen. Dieser Artikel stellt eine Synthese der erzielten Ergebnisse vor. Er diskutiert diese Ergebnisse in Verbindung mit dem gesamten Kohlengruben Zusammenhang, mit den Ergebnissen von numerischen Modellierungen, mit der Labor-Charakterisierung und mit der microsismische Überwachung. It has been established that significant time-dependent stope convergence may occur over time periods of hours and days in certain hard-rock gold and platinum mines. The source of this time-dependent behaviour appears to be associated with both pre-existing discontinuities and with mining-induced fractures that form near the stope face. These induced fractures may be associated with blasting processes and may also be formed in response to high stress concentrations in the unmined regions immediately ahead of the stope face. In shallower platinum mining operations, time-dependent behaviour is, however, observed to be much less marked unless some form of specific mining-induced fracturing occurs. One particular case of considerable interest is the time-dependent behaviour that is found to be associated with the formation and deployment of crush pillars. The purpose of the paper is to present a simple limit-equilibrium computational model of this behaviour that is sensitive to both the formation sequence and the size of planned crush pillars in a mine layout. This model provides a useful means to optimize the sizing of crush pillars, and at the same time may be used to identify potentially hazardous circumstances in which pillars may not crush in a stable manner.

Neste trabalho a estrutura cristalina do carbeto de tântalo (TaC), que é um material extremamente duro, com elevado ponto de fusão e elevada estabilidade química, foi analisada por difração de raios- X e pelo método Rietiveld.Para isto, o carbeto de tântalo foi obtido a partir do precursor tris(oxalato)oxitantalato de amônio hidratado, através de reação gás-sólido e sólido-sólido a baixa temperatura (1000°C) e curto tempo de reação, e foi caracterizado através de Difração de Raios-X (DRX), Refinamento Rietveld e Micróscopia Eletronica de Varredura (MEV). Através das analises de DRX e do refinamento Reitiveld para o TaC com S= 1,1584, observou-se a formação do carbeto de tântalo puro com estrutura cúbica e tamanho médio de cristalitos na ordem de 12,9 nanômetros.

We have had occasion to produce wire of Np-237 in small diameters for use in some chemical experiments. Since the mechanical metallurgy of neptunium has not been investigated extensively, it seems desirable to report our successful extrusion technique. Because of the neptunium activity and its attendant health hazard the experimental work was done in glove boxes and related equipment also used for Pu-239. At room temperature a phase neptunium' is a hard (Dph -355) orthorhombic metal of high density (p = 20.45 g per cu cm). a neptunium transforms2 to tetragonal ß neptunium at about 280°C and this in turn transforms to bcc y neptunium at about 577°C. The y phase melts at about 637°C. A temperature of 340° to 345°C was selected for the extrusion, this temperature being a compromise be- tween a possible advantage of working with the presumably more plastic cubic y phase above 577°C and the risk of having the neptunium react with the alloy steel die to form the low-melting Fe-Np eutectic. A 0.75-in.-long, 0.26-in.-diameter ingot of good-purity* Np-237 was extruded by the direct *C = 230 ppm, Pu = 200 ppm, thirty-five metallic elements below limit of detection by spectrographic methods. process through flat-face orifices to form several sizes of wire ranging from 0.010 to 0.030 in. in diameter. Molybdenum disulfide was used as the die lubricant. The extrusion was done in a vacuum of about 10-4 torr to reduce reaction of the neptunium with atmospheric gases. British workers3 at Harwell have extruded neptunium under similar conditions. The force required to extrude 0.010-in.-diameter wire at the rate of 4 in. per min was 6000 lb, as measured with an electrical load cell. Wire 0.020 in. in diameter was extruded with a force of 4700 lb at a rate of 2 in. per min, and wire 0.030 in. in diameter was extruded with a force of 4000 lb at a rate of 1.3 in. per min. El presente texto describe la exploración, geología, controles estructurales, mineralización y los tipos de alteración hidrotermal del yacimiento minero Cuajone, situado al sur de la Cordillera Occidental de los Andes y en el flanco Andino de Moquegua. En 1937, se inicia su exploración a través de una campaña exploratorla de la empresa Cerro de Pasco, donde se determina la zona como un proyecto potencial de cobre porfirítico de baja ley. Posteriormente en 1942, se inicia la primera campaña de perforación diamantina exploratoria y en 1969, se inicia la etapa de construcción y desbroce de material para preparar la mina. De otro lado, se ha desarrollado un modelo de la evolución del yacimiento desde las rocas preminerales del Grupo Toquepala, de las cuales la andesita basáltica fue una gran receptora de la mineralización de cobre originada por la intrusión de un primer pulso de latita porfirítica.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Spokane Research Laboratory (SRL), investigated a means to evaluate the potential impact of surface conditions above underground mines on emergency response activities. Recent events have highlighted the need to conduct critical emergency operations on the surface above underground work areas. Accessibility and usability of the surface, such as the ability to drill holes or deploy seismic monitoring or through the earth communications systems, are an important consideration for emergency response planning. This paper identifies critical surface conditions such as: surface waters, valley fill, highways, railroads and significant structures that must be considered in emergency response planning and in the conduct of emergency operations as they relate specifically to the seismic detection of trapped underground miners. Results of case studies indicate a need to consider the impact surface conditions may have on emergency response capabilities.

"The ISO 9000 Quality Management System Standards have become internationally accepted as the way to manage quality assurance. The author has developed a Maintenance Management System Standard using ISO 9001as a model and is working with a major basemetal mining company to implement this. This paper describes the structure of the standard and the steps required for its implementation.Using a management standard ensures that a system is maintained, reviewed by internal audit, and when instances of failing to follow the procedures (nonconformances) occur, that corrective action is taken. It also ensures that regular reviews are made and that the sys-tem is continuously improved.The Standard is designed so that if an organization decides to register to an ISO 9000standard, the Maintenance Management System will be in a format that is compatible and can be incorporated with little effort into the Quality System.IntroductionIn reviewing maintenance operations at many mining companies, and often seeing those same organizations some years later, two recurring issues have been noticed..The first issue is how dependent effective maintenance is upon individual supervisors and crews. In one situation, a mine that had an excellent maintenance system in the 1980s. Now, with new supervisors and crews, it is starting to develop a system that will bring it back to where it once was. No written procedures remain from the earlier excellent system.The second issue is that most operations feel that maintenance is the sole responsibility of the maintenance supervisors and crews. Nothing could be further from the truth. Maintenance, like safety, is everyone’s responsibility. If the operator does not report problems and perform daily checks, and if the production supervisor runs equipment until it fails, then nothing the maintenance crew does will prevent emergency breakdowns and lost production. More importantly, equipment will be operated in unsafe conditions, putting employees at risk and, with today’s regulations, leaving supervisors open to prosecution.The Maintenance Management System outlined in this paper is designed to establish the present best practices as standard procedures, to provide a continual review so that these practices are improved in the future, and to identify instances where the system fails so that corrective action is taken. The mine referred to above is using this approach to make sure that, this time, the system it implements will survive."

"The depressive effect of dichromate on galena was evaluated with chemical experiments and small-scale depression experiments at a pH of around 12. The depressive effect was measured with Dynamic Vapor Sorption (DVS), which measures the water uptake of a sample as a function of the % relative humidity. The depression is due to PbCrO4PbO, which in the presence of Ca2+ and SO4 2- forms a more or less amorphous solid solution (Pb,Ca)(CrO4,SO4)PbO, which clogs to the surfaces of the ore. Free Pb2+- ions are needed for depression to occur and at high pH Pb2+ - hydroxide complexes, supply enough Pb2+ - ions to precipitate (Pb,Ca)(CrO4,SO4)PbO. In air CO2, precipitates CaCO3 which slowly lowers pH, precipitating more (Pb,Ca)(CrO4,SO4)PbO and CaCO3 on galena. Similar experiments where performed with five alternative depressors whereof phosphate, which forms an amorphous precipitate of approximate composition Pb3Ca13(PO4)10SO4, gave the best results. Phosphate was tested in laboratory scale flotation experiments giving encouraging results.INTRODUCTIONWithin Boliden Mines, concentrating of copper and lead from complex sulfide ores is performed by bulk flotation, meaning that copper and lead are concentrated in the same product. Downstream, copper and lead are separated by flotation of chalcopyrite, and depression of galena. Boliden has for many decades used sodium dichromate to depress galena (reference 1). Dichromate is both toxic and carcinogenic and Boliden has for many years investigated several alternatives. So far, however, the best results have been obtained with dichromate. Since Boliden has tried to substitute dichromate for a long time without finding a process as effective, Boliden decided to clarify the function of dichromate in the depression of galena and on the basis of the outcome find alternative depressors with similar function. This study was given to RISE Bioscience and Materials / Surface, Process and Formulation as a consultancy assignment. This paper presents the outcome of the combined efforts of Boliden and RISE."

ALTHOUGH the element titanium was discovered by William Gregor in 1790, over a hundred years passed before it was put to commercial use. The first commercial application of titanium was as an alloy additive to iron and steel, and the first ferroalloys were produced domestically in 1906. Titanium pigments were developed somewhat later and have been produced in the United States since 1918. The use of titaniferous material in welding-rod coatings first gained acceptance ill the mid-30's. The metal titanium has only had commercial importance since 1948; domestic production for that year was 10 tons. The relative importance of these major uses of titanium in various forms may he gaged by the consumption of titanium dioxide (Ti02) for these purposes in 1954. Of a total of 440,000 short tons of Ti02 consumed in 1954, 95 percent of the total was consumed for pigments; 2 percent for welding-rod coatings; 1 percent for non-titanium-base alloys and carbide; and 2 percent for miscellaneous uses. The titanium-metal industry is in its infancy, but it has more than doubled its output every year from 1948 to 1954, reaching 5,370 short tons in 1954.

A poured slag bottom is universally considered to be the best type bottom for copper reverberatory furnaces. It is impervious to molten matte and ready for immediate use.When molten slag is not available a monolithic silica bottom is the second best; such a bottom has been adopted at Mount Morgan. The laying of such a bottom is a phase of smelter construction on which so little real information is obtainable that a day to day record of such a recent example as Mt. Morgan's 19 ft. x 40 ft. reverberatory may be of interest. The work was done under the direction of E. Pesout, of McGill Smelter, Nevada. PREPARATION OF THE BOTTOMA 26-inch bed of closely packed firebrick with sand-filled joints was first laid on the clean, dry concrete foundation and the whole dried out by small fires maintained on the brickwork for several days. Ninety tons of silica sand was meantime thoroughly dried and stored in clean drums. This sand must be low in FeO and CaO and contain about 95% Si02 , the majority of which should be present as tridymite. This form of silica shows little expansion at high temperatures, for it is the form stable between 870° and 1470° C.Its presence thus minimises disturbance to the bottom by the expansion which, during the burning in, would mark the transformation of quartz to tridymite.
