Large reserves of feldspar ore exist in the Aegean region of Turkey. The main colored impurities in these ores are iron- and titanium-bearing minerals such as anatase, rutile, sphene and ilmenite. In this study, a potassium feldspar ore containing mainly quartz and coloring impurities was subjected to beneficiation tests involving magnetic separation and flotation, which were applied either separately or in combination. Bench-scale flotation experiments using cationic collectors G-TAP and Flotigam V-4343 and using HF and H2SO4 as modifiers were employed to separate feldspar from quartz and to remove part of the titanium impurities. The best results were achieved with a combination of high-intensity wet magnetic separation and flotation. A feldspar concentrate containing 16.28% Al2O3, 10.75% K2O, 2.84% Na2O, 69.97% SiO2 and 0.16% Fe2O3 was produced. A quartz concentrate containing 2.30% Al2O3, 0.48% K2O, 0.42% Na2O, 0.07% Fe2O3 and 96.20% SiO2 was also obtained

The recovery of copper and cobalt from ancient copper slags from the Küre region of Turkey was investigated. A fayalitic-type of ancient copper slag containing 1.24% Cu, 0.53% Co and 53.16% Fe were subjected to an experimental study. Two different routes were followed to recover the metal values. The first route was roasting the slag with pyrite followed by leaching. The second route was flotation of the slags, roasting of the flotation tailings with pyrite and leaching. The second route was found to be suitable for the treatment of the copper slag studied. In the flotation step, a copper concentrate containing approximately 11% Cu was produced with a 77% recovery while 93% of the cobalt stayed in the tailings. In the roasting experiments, the effects of roasting time, pyrite: slag ratio and roasting temperature on the dissolution efficiencies of Cu and Co were investigated, and the optimum conditions were determined. In the tests, 87% of the cobalt dissolution was observed after one hour of roasting at 500°C with a pyrite: slag ratio of 3:1. The copper dissolution in the tests was 31%. Based on the results of this study, a process flowsheet is proposed for the evaluation of these slags.

I.H. 635 (LBJ Freeway) was constructed as a loop freeway around the city of Dallas in the late 1960s and early 1970s with a design capacity of 160,000 vehicles per day (vpd). Today’s facility is carrying over 270,000 vpd. To help mitigate community concerns with regard to right-of-way issues, noise, safety, and traffic disruption, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is planning a number of significant improvements. The West Section improvements include the construction of managed HOV/Toll lanes. Within this 8-mile section, TxDOT is planning two mined tunnels(1.5 and 1.9 miles long) beneath the LBJ Freeway. The mined tunnels will connect to cut-and-cover box sections in both the east and west directions. This paper presents an overview of the project development from the design schematic, through the geotechnical investigations, into the current design stage. The project is being planned for implementation by use of a Comprehensive Development Agreement.

India bestowed with 6000km of the coastal belt, contains some of the richest and largest placer deposits with a mixture of heavy minerals like ilmenite, rutile, leucoxene, zircon, monazite, sillimanite and garnet. Each of the minerals is having economic value due to its inherent characteristics for industrial use in fields of paints, metallurgy, refractory, abrasive and so on. The reserves of titanium bearing minerals (ilmenite, leucoxene, and rutile) in the country is around 378 million tonnes. More than 90% of the titanium based minerals produced worldwide are utilised for making value added products in the pigment industries. Approximately 8 million tonnes of monazite reserves are available in the country from which several rare earth elements like cerium, neodymium, lanthanum, yttrium etc. can be extracted for use in several industries. The country contains a deposit of about 20 million tonnes of zircon, which is used in foundries, refractories, ceramics and chemicals. India has a reserve of 107 million tonnes of garnet and 131 million tonnes of sillimanite required for the abrasive and refractory industries respectively. Keeping in view the multifarious uses, the beach sand minerals are being exploited to have the economic growth of the nation. Although the process adopted for the separations are simple, the equipment involved are specially designed because of the nature of the material of construction. Starting from the spirals to magnetic separators, all equipments are manufactured outside India, which is not only costly, but the availability also takes much time for fulfilling the import formalities. Unlike open cast mining, beach sand mining is a environment friendly mining because dredging is implemented to cut and pump the loose sand through a slurry pump causing less damage to the surface topography as both mining and backfilling takes place simultaneously. Therefore all out efforts are made to explore the beach sand placer deposits in an economic manner to emerge as a leader in the global mineral industries.

Recent advances in computing, rendering, and display technologies have generated increased accessibility for virtual reality (VR). VR allows the creation of dynamic, high-fidelity environments to simulate dangerous situations, test conditions, and visualize concepts. Consequently, numerous products have been developed, but many of these are limited in scope. Therefore, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health researchers developed a VR framework, called VR Mine, to rapidly create an underground mine for human data collection, simulation, visualization, and training. This paper describes the features of VR Mine using self-escape and proximity detection as case studies. Features include mine generation, simulated networks, proximity detection systems, and the integration and visualization of real-time ventilation models.

The contract for the construction of the Inline Pump Station for the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District involves the sinking of three shafts and the excavation of a pump chamber. The shafts are being sunk to a depth of 104 meters and pass through 52m of sediments before encountering dolomitic bedrock. The pump chamber is constructed in dolomite. The sediments are alluvial, estuarine and lacustrine in origin, with some ice margin deposits. They comprise loosely consolidated fine to coarse grained sand, silts, clays and gravels, and they are heavily saturated with a water content often above 60%. The water table is at a depth of 3m. The dolomite is silurian, generally dense, with some clay-filled vugs and shale partings. Until 1983, underground construction in the Milwaukee area had been limited to depths of 26m in the sediments and 20m in the dolomites. Water control methods had included caissons, compressed air, extensive internal and external dewatering, and grouting. Flows of 20 liters per second were commonplace with as much as 80 liters per second being encountered in the rock. However, in 1984 work was commenced on the deep sections of the Milwaukee sewerage scheme with the letting of three major contracts including the Inline Pump Station. With excavation taking place at greater depths, it become obvious that previous methods of water control would be inappropriate. To protect against major inrushes of high pressure water in the rock, an extensive program of pre-grouting from the surface was specified. Water control in the sediments was left to the discretion of the contractor and in each case freezing was choosen. This paper describes in detail the grouting and freezing procedures.

Considerable movement is afoot internationally to rationalize standards and regulations relating to valuations and the qualifications for valuation professionals. In July 2000 the International Valuation Standards Committee released expanded standards, and additional important improvements are planned by 2003. Possible updates to the International Accounting Standards (IAS) and potential adoption of IAS by the U.S. could significantly impact minerals appraisers. Standards designed specifically for mineral asset valuation are under development in Canada and the U.S., with Australia’s internationally respected VALMIN Code providing the benchmark. In the U.S., the all-encompassing Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) is annually modified and continues to gain deeper acceptance, while the SEC holds fast to its antiquated rule prohibiting reporting of a quantitative estimate and value for non-reserve mineralization. Some important international trade agreements are driving actions to free the trade in professional services. In July 2000, an international workshop was held to initiate discussion on minimum qualifications for appraisers to work internationally. Pressure for uniform minimum qualifications and rules for professionals internationally will continue to build. The U.S. is historically among the slowest countries to implement such initiatives, with its state level licensure barriers having the potential to cause some of its professionals to be stranded in an international backwater. Structural change is needed in Australia’s VALMIN Code to remove conflict with the latest International Valuation Standards. The mineral valuation standards developers of Australia, Canada and the U.S. should work jointly on updating VALMIN for global use.

The Reserve Mining Co., in the processing of taconite iron ore quarried from the Peter Mitchell Pit, deposited the finely crushed waste rock into Lake Superior near Silver Bay Minnesota. In the early 1970s The U.S. Environmental Protection agency filed a lawsuit against Reserve Mining Co., asking the court to force the company to stop dumping into the lake. On April 20, 1974, after a lengthy court battle, the U.S. District Court concluded that the Reserve Mining discharge into Lake Superior violated federal and state pollution laws and thus ordered Reserve Mining Co., to halt the lake disposal of taconite tailings. At the time many feared that some of the mineral particles contained in the tailings (alleged to be asbestos or asbestos-like) would cause human health problems. This Conference was thus convened to readdress the problem of the mineral content of the Biwabik Iron Formation and to whether any minerals contained in the ore could cause human disease. The four papers given in this session address the nature of the mineral particles in the taconite rock, the definition of the term ??asbestos?? and the history of the legal controversy over the possible health effects of certain mineral particles contained in the Biwabik iron range ores. Morey The Biwabik Iron Formation was a principal source of ore for the American steel industry during the 20th Century. The unaltered iron deposits, called taconite, contain approximately 30% iron and 50% SiO2. About 75% of the iron in taconite resides in the mineral magnetite, the remainder is largely in iron carbonate and several iron-silicate minerals.

Issues between resource utilization and resource preservation often develop in connection with coal mining. One such conflict exists in eastern Utah where PacifiCorp and Energy West Mining Company are working with State and Federal agencies to address the resource recovery/resource preservation dispute. The effects of underground longwall coal mining on golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) cliff nesting sites have been studied at the Cottonwood Mine since 1986. Subsidence, escarpment spalling, and the nesting activities of the local eagle population were monitored.

Equivalent elastic properties of discontinuously jointed rock masses are computed using a non-representative volume element(NRVE) approach within a three dimensional finite element program. Joint persistence, defined as the percentage of a joint plane that is actually occupied by joint material, is used in the NRVE computations as a step towards greater realism in stability analysis of mine openings. Persistence p is also the probability that a segment of a joint plane is occupied by joint material. Computations reveal a threshold phenomenon in jointed rock mass moduli similar to that observed in percolation theory. A rapid decrease in moduli occurs above a critical value pc(about 0.6). A detailed analysis of the well-known solution for stress about a circular opening in isotropic, elastic ground illustrates the effects of joint set orientation, spacing and persistence. Although stable “on average”, joint segment failures reveal a threat to stability and point towards rational design of reinforcement or support of discontinuously jointed rock masses.

This paper evaluates the effect of longwall mining on a cluster of unconventional shale gas wells located in a district barrier pillar between a current longwall panel and the future panel north of the barrier pillar. A cluster of 19 unconventional shale gas wells have been drilled and 5 additional gas wells have been proposed in the barrier pillar. The closest gas well is 25.6 m (84 ft) to the current panel tailgate and 26.2 m (86 ft) to the tailgate of the future panel north of the barrier pillar. The rib-to-rib width of the barrier pillar is 57.9 m (190 ft). The distance between the two gas wells across the barrier pillar is 6.1 m (20 ft). The pillars in the current tailgate are on 22.9-m (75-ft) and 32.0-m (105-ft) centers, and the pillars in the tailgate of the panel north of the barrier will be on 22.9-m (75- ft) and 36.6-m (120-ft) centers. The two longwall panels adjacent to the barrier pillar are 475.5-m (1,560-ft) wide. The overburden depth at the shale gas well site is 321.6 m (1,055 ft). The term shortwall mining is somewhat of a mis¬nomer. It may infer a longwall mining system, but of much shorter face length. Actually, continuous pillar mining is a more descriptive term. Coal is mined using a continuous miner as would be done in pillar extrac¬tion, but with the addition of roof supports to control the caving. Face length on such a system typically is 46 to 61 m (150 to 200 ft). The coal is cut in front of the roof supports in the same direction as with a long¬wall shearing machine or plow, but it is mined with a continuous miner and shuttle cars of the same type as used in continuous mining. ROOF SUPPORTS Roof supports for shortwall mining must be con¬siderably larger than those used for longwall mining because of the additional roof to be supported by the wider 2.6- to 3.4-m (81/2- to 11-ft) cut of the continuous miner. Capacities of shortwall chocks in current use vary from about 454 to 726 t (500 to 800 st). The higher capacity as compared to longwall roof supports is needed primarily because of (1) the greater support length, hence more roof weight, and (2) the presence of draw slate in the eastern coal seams, where shortwall is being used. The most popular shortwall support currently used is the four-leg 590 t (650 st) model. This support is shown in Fig. 1. The price of this support is approxi¬mately $25,000 each. As shown in Fig. 1, the shortwall chock incorporates an unusually long forward bar that has an additional hydraulically operated extension bar to provide face support for the wide miner cut. The traditional method for training personnel in the mining and other heavy industries has been face-to-face, either via a lecturer in a classroom or through an apprenticeship. With the advent of applications tools such as video, computers, and the Internet, however, a much broader range of training delivery methods is available. Especially exciting are the broad capabilities of multimedia packages that combine the best features of numerous delivery methods. Applying multimedia environments in training holds great potential, especially when there is considerable difficulty in reconstructing real training environments. The authors discuss various delivery methods currently used in training employees, including perceived advantages and disadvantages of those methods. The authors then discuss and evaluate current computer-based training efforts of the mining industry and present an example of a multimedia training tool.

As part of the 3RPORT and NEBT Projects, 5-mile Combined Sewer Overflow Tunnels were excavated with a 19 ft diameter Slurry and 26 ft diameter EPB Tunnel Boring Machines. Due to the difficult geological and hydrogeological conditions, both tunnels were excavated maintaining a ground support pressure between 2 and 5.5 bar imposing significant challenges to the projects. The first part of the paper describes the general characteristics of both projects while the second part focuses on the challenges and technical details of the pressurized breakthroughs that took place in deep shafts excavated in urban environment as part of the projects.

How does an investigation into the breakage characterization of electric arc furnace (EAF) manganese slags contribute to a more responsible usage of resources throughout the life cycle of steel products and reduction of carbon emissions? The main goal of this study is to increase the knowledge on the mechanical response of manganese slag to open the potential of pyrometallurgical residues to become secondary material in industrial applications such as infrastructure construction, fillers, binders and soil stabilization, among others.

The health of the industrial minerals industry appears to be improving year by year. In fact, preliminary information suggests that only three commodities (asbestos, bromine, and sulfur-other) failed to show a production gain in 1984 over 1983. In 1983, 10 commodities failed to post gains and six remained constant. The total value of industrial mineral production in 1984 was $16.7 billion, up $1.4 billion from 1983. Cement, clays, gypsum, and crushed stone production increased. Since these are used in housing and construction, this suggests these industries are moving out of their recent doldrums. Barite and clay production also improved in 1984. Local US barite production, however, still has a long way to go to attain the 1981 high of 2.6 Mt (2.9 million st). Barite imports remain high. But they are not as high as the 1982 importation of 2 Mt (2.3 million st). Bentonite production in 1984 increased 20% in volume and 25% in value over the previous year. This suggests improvement in the drilling industry and an increase in demand for iron ore pelletizing grades. All in all, the industrial mineral industry is alive and well. And it shows signs of great improvement in the next few years. Mill crushing drive systems are essential to cement producers. With the increased emphasis on operating efficiency, it is vital that these systems be dependable and reliable. No one needs the costs or headaches associated with unscheduled downtime or inefficient machinery operation. A reliable drive system starts with the proper selection of the ring, or girth, gear and continues through proper maintenance. Ideally, selecting the right girth gear brings together the gear manufacturer, the system designer and the end user. The gear manufacturer must know the details of the application, the demands that will be placed on the gear and the nature of the equipment to be driven. Similarly, the user and the system designer must be familiar with the variables that affect gear drive performance and service. For example, an application that places a torque load on the drive in excess of its rated capacity will result in gear tooth distress and, in severe cases, breakage.

Utilization of low-grade manganese ore adopting the carbothermic reduction roasting process is a proven method to produce high-grade manganese ore. To minimize industrial waste and protect the environment, gas cleaning plant sludge (GCPS), which is a solid waste from steel industries, was employed as a reductant to perform the reduction roasting process. The optimum conditions to carry out reduction roasting of the low-grade manganese ore were found to be: a roasting temperature of 950 °C, a residence time of 2 h, 40% GCPS as reductant, and magnetic separation at 5000 G for a manganese ore size of –10 mm. A lowgrade manganese ore comprising Mn grade 31.27% and Fe grade 19.78% having a Mn/Fe ratio of 1.58 containing a high silica content of 26.48% was used for the carbothermic reduction roasting having mineral phases of pyrolusite (MnO2) and hematite (Fe2O3) as found from XRD. The gangue minerals were separated during the magnetic separation, and the upgraded product was obtained, which reached a maximum value of TMn 49.5% with RMn 76.55% and TFe 62.19% with RFe 42.51%. In the study, activated charcoal (AC) was also taken as a reductant for comparative analysis; the experimental results revealed that GPCS performed better than that of the AC, showing potential to be used as a reductant in metallurgical industries. However, the resultedMn/Fe ratio was very low for the reduced sample; therefore, it can be used for smelting along with high-grade manganese ores as a feed.

In spite of a global economy that continues to seesaw and a U.S. Congress that is at odds with the president and themselves, cities around the world are still spending billions on their infrastructure. And that bodes well for the underground construction and tunneling industry and the professionals who work in it. In June, 1,405 of those professionals gathered in San Francisco, CA for the Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC). In addition to the first rate technical programming, attendees were able to see first-hand the latest in tunneling technology from 127 exhibitors who occupied 152 booths. Two short courses preceded the conference and two field trips were offered following the conference.
