Synfuels development in the upper Colorado River basin and the population growth attendant with such development demand sizeable quantities of water. Unfortunately, the water supply in the basin is limited and such limitation may impose a significant constraint on the development of the West's abundant energy resources. Although the water for the synfuels development will be governed by the law of prior appropriation adopted in the upper basin states, the authors point out that an apparently senior water right .my not deliver a firm supply of water. The federal and Indian Reserved Water Rights Doctrine, the Colorado River Compacts the Doctrine of Equitable Apportionment, and the federal and state environmental laws can all severely diminish the value of any given water right and the synfuels industry should take care to evaluate these factors in acquiring its water.

The possibility of producing metallic chromium from Cr2O3 via the aluminothermic route, with no external energy supply, was the subject of this laboratory-scale research. The experimental study focused on investigating the individual effects and quantitative optimization of the charge contents, i.e., the additions of CrO3, Al powder and CaO (or BaO). The highest chromium recovery of 98% was attained with the additions of 12% CrO3 and 1.2 times the stoichiometrically required amount of Al powder. The optimum CaO addition giving the highest chromium recovery was found when the CaO/Al weight ratio in the charge was equal to 0.3. When BaO was used, however, 95% Cr extraction efficiency was obtained at a BaO/Al weight ratio of 0.15.

This paper presents sulfur isotope data obtained for the deposits and country rocks of the Bailadores and Aroa Mining District, Venezuela. The study is a part of an extensive geochemical investigation of the mineralized belts that has as their aim the elucidation of the genesis of ores. The Bailadores deposits are located at about 600 Km. west-southwest of Caracas, or about 10 Km. southeast of the Town of Bailadores, Merida State (Fig. 1). The mine concession is held by the Ministry of Mines and Hydrocarbons (De Lima I, De Lima II and La Cascade areas). In a straight distance the mine is about 90 Km. southwest of Merida, the capital of Mérida State. From Mérida to Bailadores, through La Victoria and Tovar, it takes 3 hour by car. From Bailadores to the mine site it is about 40 minutes by jeep. The Aroa deposits are located at 4 Km. east of Aroa Village, Yaracuy State, about 220 Km. west of Caracas. It is 83 Km. from San Felipe, the capital of Yaracuy State to the mine (Fig.2). The mine is about 600 m above sea level, situated on the northern foot of the E-W trending Andes. The topography of the mine are shows a mature stage and is somewhat rugged. As the climate is warm and humid, the area is thicky covered with jungle.

Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (SIMS) was used to study adsorption of sulfide collectors such as modified thionocarbamates and thioureas, xanthate, dithiophosphate, and dithiophosphinate, on galena, chalcocite, chalcopyrite, and quartz under flotation related conditions. In the case of the adsorption of modified thiourea on chalcopyrite, chalcocite and Cu-activated quartz, and of dithiophosphinate on galena, SIMS measurements have provided direct evidence for the presence of metal-collector (1:1) complexes on surfaces. In the other systems, only the collector molecular ion and its fragments were detected. The distribution of adsorbed species on the surfaces was obtained by using SIMS in the imaging mode. On chalcopyrite, only the copper-collector complex was found; there was no evidence for iron-collector complex. In the case of quartz, adsorption of selective collectors was observed only after activation by copper ions.

In this study, NIOSH researchers conducted a machine learning analysis to examine whether a model could be constructed to assess the probability of dynamic failure occurrence based on geochemical and petrographic data. Random forest, cluster analysis and dimension reduction were all applied. The objective of dimensionality reduction was to explore patterns and groupings in the data and search for relations between compositional parameters. Cluster analyses were performed to determine if an algorithm could find clusters with given class memberships and to what extent misclassifications of dynamic failure status occurred. A random forest analysis performed on data from the Pennsylvania Coal Sample Databank cross-referenced with accident data from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) determined that 7 parameters of the 18 examined exerted the most influence on results. Cluster analysis on data after dimensionality reduction resulted in a hierarchal clustering algorithm finding four clusters, with one relatively distinct dynamic failure cluster, and three clusters consisting mostly of control group members but with a small number of dynamic failure members.

Differential flotation of bulk sulfide concentrates from Duluth gabbro into copper and nickel concentrates could be implemented by first destroying the hydrophobic coating with ozone and then by recovering the copper concentrate with a copper-selective collector. A number of parameters involved in the use of ozone; such as the sequence and the conditioning time of ozone treatment, the pulp pH, and the level of xanthate addition, were investigated.

Jackleg drill operators are exposed to harmful levels of hand-arm vibration (HAV). Anti-vibration handles and gloves provide modest reductions in HAV exposures and forearm muscle exertion from the use of anti-vibration handles and gloves by jackleg drill operators. The goal of this pilot study was to investigate changes in HAV with the use of anti-vibration gloves and handles compared to forearm muscle exertion experienced by operators and measured with surface electromyography (EMG). Five subjects operated the drill under four different cases: no anti-vibration controls, anti-vibration gloves only, anti-vibration handle only, and simultaneous anti-vibration handle and glove use. Muscle exertion was expressed as a percent of maximum voluntary contraction (%MVC) and was compared using Welch’s ANOVA with Games-Howell post hoc comparisons. The case with both anti-vibration controls in use simultaneously (largest grip diameter) was associated with a mean %MVC of 36.13% during operation for all forearm muscles combined, which was significantly higher than that of the other cases (p < 0.05). There were no statistically significant differences in mean HAV exposures. The anti-vibration handle with anti-vibration glove case only increased the maximum allowable exposure time by 8 min as compared to the control case without any anti-vibration controls. These results suggest that the modest HAV exposure reductions from the use of anti-vibration handles and gloves may pale in comparison to the increased muscle exertion resulting from their use, and this trade-off among jackleg drill operators is a potential concern that warrants further investigation.

The mining conditions in the Meden Rid mine at levels below 1000 m from the Earth&apos;s surface are specific and rather severe. The rock temperature is about 40-45°C. The air humidity in the workings is approx. 80-90%. There is a limited capacity for additional fresh air supply. The air supply and distribution systems in the mine are very complicated. The airflow recirculation is due to the existing arrangement of the main fans. Certain accidental phenomena are difficult to predict. All these conditions create possibilities for heat and mass exchange between the rock and the air current thus hampering the control of the ventilation and air-conditioning in the mine workings. The changes in the temperature and humidity in certain characteristic places of the development and extraction workings are predicted. The refrigeration output required and the arrangement of the air coolers are also determined. A new ventilation and air- conditioning scherne has been developed. The new ventilation- cooling designs for levels between 1000-1200 m beneath the Earth&apos;s surface are based on the use of portable refrigerating machines having low water flowrate as well as heat-insulating and waterproof materials and methods for preliminary cooling of the orebody within the mining block.

INTRODUCTION The simplest way to drill a hole into rock is to strike a steel chisel or drill bit with a hammer. Early miners used this elementary hand technique so successfully in "single jacking" and "double jacking" that the first mechanical rock-drill designers sought to duplicate it. However, in the early developments, the designers were forced to retreat to a construction known as the "piston drill," wherein the entire drilling element is tied to the piston and reciprocates with it. It took nearly 50 years to devise a method of divorcing the two elements and to achieve the original hammer principle used in hand drilling. The Mont Cenis tunnel, drilled through the French Alps in 1861, usually is considered the birthplace of the mechanical rock drill. The Hoosac tunnel in Massa¬chusetts was drilled at about the same time, and the success of these two ventures paved the way for innova¬tions that produced the Burleigh, Ingersoll, Sergeant, and Waugh piston drills between 1870 and the turn of the century. In 1897, George Leyner of Colorado introduced what has been considered the most significant development in rock-drill history. He devised the hollow drill steel for water flushing; when combined with his free-piston hammer drill, this became the first lightweight and dust¬free underground machine. In addition, Leyner&apos;s drills introduced improvements such as automatic rifle-bar rotation of the drill steel and chuck, automatic lubrica¬tion, and an enclosed throttle control. During the 1920s and 1930s, automatic feeds, centralizers, sliding cones, and the automatic water back head were developed, laying the groundwork for all pneumatic underground drills currently in use. Since these pioneering efforts, rock-drill development has been concerned primarily with refining the designs and improving the metallurgy to make faster, lighter, and more dependable machines. Fig. 1 illustrates the progress in drilling speed during the first 125 years of rock-drill development; that progress is a credit to the persistence and inventiveness of the designers in the rock-drilling industry. ROCK-DRILL CLASSIFICATIONS To meet the variety of conditions encountered in rock drilling, several distinct types of drills have been de¬veloped. In general, rock drills may be classified as either hand-held or mounted, with the hand-held ma¬chines including the jackhammer or sinker, the jackdrill or jackleg, and the stoper. The mounted drills are com¬monly known as "drifters." Table 1 shows that each type of drill is available in several sizes from different manufacturers. Fig. 2 illustrates a typical rock drill, showing the principal components. The jackhammer or sinker, shown in Fig. 3, is used primarily for general mine utility work such as drilling anchor holes (short vertical holes to bolt or anchor machinery), pin holes (short, usually horizontal holes to fasten sheaves, etc. to side walls), popholes (for blasting large boulders), and similar applications. They also are used for shaft sinking. Jackhammers are classified ac¬cording to weight, and they range from 7 to 30 kg (15 to 65 lb). The rock drill originally known as a jackleg was made by clamping a pneumatic cylinder or leg to a jack¬hammer, both to support the weight of the machine and to feed the tool forward in horizontal or uphole work. The more modern jackdrill refined this concept to make the hinged pivot for the leg integral with the drill cylinder and to group all drill and leg controls in the drill back head for convenience. Fig. 4 illustrates a typical jackdrill. Jackdrills are classified according to cylinder bore size, ranging from 60 to 83 mm (2.375 to 3.25 in.). Because of their light weight and versatility, jack drills are very effective in small drifts, small tunnel head¬ings, and stoping. A classification of flotation processes carried out in concentrated electrolyte solutions, e.g., seawater, is proposed using the most obvious features of these processes: low or high content of Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions, pulp ionic strength, and pH. The first distinguishable group is the processes carried out in NaCl/KCl solutions, about 0.5 M in the case of salt flotation of inherently hydrophobic minerals, and at concentrations about 10 times higher in the flotation of potash ores. In the flotation of sulfide ores, such as nickel or copper ores, with xanthate-like collectors, the xanthate collector is apparently not affected by pulp ionic strength and only adjustment of frother may be required. Content of Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions in seawater is the main difference between such systems and fresh water. The presence of these metallic ions can adversely affect flotation in the pH ranges over which these ions hydrolyse. The successful flotation of Cu-Mo ores typically requires depression of pyrite at high pH values achieved with the use of lime. However, in seawater, flotation of Cu-Mo ores requires removal of the hydrolysis products of the Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions or the use of a pyrite depressant that can be effective over the pH ranges that are much below the pH of hydrolysis. Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions also affect flotation of phosphate ores with fatty acids. In this case, the depression mechanism is not caused by precipitating magnesium hydroxides on the mineral surface but by precipitation of collector insoluble salts, and the same ions are responsible for depression in both cases. In the seawater flotation of Cu-Mo sulfide ores and phosphate ores, the practical solution involves either removal of Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions prior to the flotation or complexation with other reagents.

This study was initiated to investigate the occurrence of cinnabar in the oxidation zones of some mercury sulfide deposits. Seven mines or mine districts were visited and samples were taken from both the oxidation and primary zones of these deposits in order to compare their mineralogies and assess Vie chemical changes that took place during oxidation. As a result of the study of these specimens, several limiting factors are suggested for the chemical environments and processes active in both the deposition and oxidation of mercury sulfide deposits. The Mt. Jackson mine, near Guerneville, California (location map, fig. 1), was studied in some detail and forms the basis of this paper. The mine has not heretofore been described in detail in the literature. The Mt. Jackson mine is considered typical of mercury sulfide deposits occurring at the faulted boundaries of serpentinite bodies and enclosing sediments. Such mines are common in the California and Oregon Coast Ranges? Specimens collected by the author from the New Idria and New Almaden districts, the Mt. Diablo, the Culver Bear, and the Buena Vista mines in California, and the Opalite district (Cordero and Bretz, mines) on the Oregon-Nevada border were studied for comparison with the Mt. Jackson samples. The mine description, maps and sketches were composed from field maps kindly provided by Francis Fredericks, consulting geologist to the Sonoma Quick-silver Mine Inc. during the author&apos;s visit in 1962. Additional information was obtained from the company maps and minor corrections and interpretations were added by the author.

The Lac Shortt gold deposit is located in Northwestern Quebec, at some 115 km west of the Opemiska Division and 380 km northeast of the Lac Dufault Division, as shown on Figure 1. Falconbridge&apos;s exploration crews drilled the first six holes in the gold-bearing ore zone in 1979. After further diamond drilling from surface in 1980, the decision was taken to carry out an underground exploration program. A three-compartment shaft was sunk to a depth of 340 metres in 1981 and 1982; it was followed by an extensive exploration program, which included 1073 metres of cross-cutting and footwall drifting, 645 metres of ore drifting and 11 200 metres of diamond drilling. The underground work was completed by mid-winter 1983. It was followed by a complete feasibility study of the Lac Shortt Project. After some $Can 14.2 millions in exploration expenditures, the Board of Directors of Corp. Falconbridge Copper approved in July 1983 additional expenditures of $Can 45 millions to bring the Lac Shortt Mine in production at the capacity of 261 000 tonnes per year. Gold price was $US 425 per ounce at the time.

Since the Buffalo Creek incident in February, 1972, Federal and state environmental agencies have had the pressure on the coal industry in the Appalachian area to close the coal processing plant water circuits. In an attempt to comply with this requirement, Eastern .Associated Coal Corp. decided to install a vacuum disc filter system at its Kopperston plant to eliminate the tailings pond and reduce the amount of plant make-up water. It was recognized at the time that the plant static thickener tailings would be a very difficult slurry to dewater because of its unusually high clay content. The following is a case history of the Kopperston installation and the refinements Eastern has made in its vacuum disc filter operation to increase efficiency.

Reasonable mining-retention ratio (ratio of room width to pillar width) is vital to recovery rate and stope stability in underground mining of solid potassium salt deposits. Based on the engineering background of a solid underground potassium salt mine in Khammouan Province, characteristics of the plastic zone of the pillar, and the variation of recovery rate and stope stability under different mining-retention ratio conditions are discussed. The results show that compared with current room width (8 m) and pillar width (10 m), the optimization method of improvement of stope stability. The research results are helpful to recover as much solid potash resources as possible under the premise of ensuring the stability of stope.

Weak rock mass and poor flow of material can cause excessive ore loss and dilution in sublevel caving. This paper proposes a method to establish design parameters for an inclined deposit within a weak rock mass and evaluates its effectiveness through a case study. In order to solve the problem of low production capacity and poor safety conditions of sublevel caving mining at the Yingfangzi silver mine in China and to ensure a smooth production from the refractory ore body, it is necessary to select appropriate stope structure parameters. Based on random medium theory of gravity flow and the improved equation of ore discharge in random medium, an end wall drawing experiment is carried out to determine the optimum design and flow parameters. It was observed from the experiment that, due to the influence of the randomness of particle movement, there is a mismatch in the flow parameter measurement. The flow characteristics and distribution of the marker particles are different from that of the tested particles resulting in large drawbody shape distortion. The study finds that the flow parameters obtained by the new method are more practical and account for drawpoint width and recommends that the new method for determining the sublevel stope height is used when the drawbody is a non-standard ellipsoid. The outcomes have shown a significant reduction in the dilution and improvement in the recovery rates, and the safety and efficiency of mining have been greatly improved.

"The Sangan iron ore mines (SIOM) in Iran are located in a remote area near the Afghanistan border. The SIOM deposit contains a geological resource of 1.1 Gt (1.2 billion st) of mostly magnetite with an iron (Fe) grade ranging from 27 to 61 percent. The Iranian government plans a stepwise development of SIOM in cooperation with private companies to satisfy the growing demand of the Iranian steel industry. Sustainable development is an influential ethical concept in mining all around the world. However, a successful realization of a sustainable development plan is not possible without a foundation on the core values and regarding the specific circumstances of the individual mining country. This paper introduces SIOM and describes sustainable development activities undertaken during its development. From the early stages, these activities have been realized to secure the acceptance of the stakeholders in the region. To evaluate their effects, indicators were filtered to the ones with the highest priority for the stakeholders. Moreover, Islamic values and Iranian regulations and their influences on SIOM were analyzed.Mining industry in Iran The Islamic Republic of Iran holds 68 types of minerals, including salt, sand and gravel, gypsum, chrome, lead, zinc, copper, coal, gold, iron, etc., with 33.5 Gt (37 billion st) of proven reserves and more than 51.7 Gt (57 billion st) of potential resources. Iran is ranked among the 15 major mineral rich countries (1). In accordance with the statistics published by Statistical Center of Iran (SCI), there were 5,316 active mines and 84,922 employees in the whole country in 2012-2013 (2) and, according to the statistics published by Central Bank of Iran (CBI) in 2011, the share of this sector in the gross domestic product (GDP) of the country was 1.2 percent (3)."

P.T. Freeport Indonesia operates a mining complex located in the highlands of Papua, Indonesia. This district consists of underground and surface operations. The East Ertsberg skarn system (EESS) is one of the major orebodies in this district. Subsurface caving of the EESS has been carried out in a systematic series of mining lifts dating back almost 30 years. Present production from the third lift deep ore zone (DOZ), has reached 80 kt/d (88,000 stpd) during 2010, with this rate sustained through 2015. The orebody was proven below the existing caving level, with the next vertical block called the deep mill level zone (DMLZ).

Since 2019, approximately two dozen international battery recycling companies have been operating at the commercial or pilot scale [1]. However, current process capacity does not exceed 100,000 tons of end-of-life (EOL) lithium-ion batteries (LIB) per year, and the current recycling rate is only about 5% in North America [2-3]. Recycling metals from EOL LIBs is not only essential to waste minimization and environmental stewardship, but also a source of critical materials, which can contribute towards supply chain stabilization. LIB recycling can be roughly divided into three categories: direct recycling, pyrometallurgy, and hydrometallurgy. Direct recycling seeks to retain as much of the manufactured effort with minimum chemical processing [4]. The evolution of battery designs and chemical compositions are challenges to this approach [5-6]. Pyrometallurgical processes are robust and flexible allowing a broad spectrum of batteries with minimum pre-processing requirements. Some of the matrix issues are solved through combustion of some constituents. Smelting is strongly tied to fossil energy and air emissions are a concern. In addition, pyrometallurgical processes are not stand alone, as hydrometallurgical refining normally required to separate and recover the metals of interest (Co, Ni, and Cu) from the produced alloy and Li from the slag [7]. Hydrometallurgical processes can be highly selective and efficient in recovering high purity materials [8]. In general, hydrometallurgical processes are considered cleaner and less costly than high temperature processes [4,9-10]. Extensive chemical consumption and waste generation significantly increase the operating costs and overall environmental impact of the hydrometallurgical processes [11]. Leaching of metals from LIBs is dominated by the mixture of sulfuric acid (1 to 4 M H2SO4) and hydrogen peroxide (1 to 15 wt.% H2O2) [10]. Although organic acids have been tested as lower environmental impact alternatives, the reported pulp density operations are low < 60 g/L [10-11]. For the H2SO4/H2O2 leachates, high leaching efficiencies >90% are reported for Co, Ni, Mn, and Li from cathode materials at temperatures over 40 ⁰C and pulp densities between 30 to 200 g/L [9-10]. H2O2 acts as reducing agent to convert Co+3 and Mn+4 into their soluble forms, Co+2 and Mn+2 [12]. Despite the claims of H2O2 being a clean reducing agent [13], production of H2O2 has significant environmental impacts as determined by life-cycle analyses [13-14]. Moreover, the costs and risks associated with H2O2 transportation and storage cannot be ignored [15].
