The goal of hot mix asphalt (HMA) design is optimal material blending to meet Superpave specifications. HMA cost minimization has being modeled as linear programing (LP) (Awuah-Offei et al 2011) and mixed integer LP problems (Brown et al, 2012) and solved with commercial software such as LINDO and CPLEX. Often these software, which are designed to solve general optimization problems, have licenses that cost thousands of dollars. The objective of this study is to develop a novel solution algorithm to the HMA optimization problem presented by Brown et al. (2012), which will negate the need for expensive commercial packages and is specific to this problem. This novel algorithm is based on the branch and bound algorithm for solving mixed integer problems. The algorithm is incorporated into a software package with an easy-to-use graphical user interface. The developed algorithm is validated using a real-life HMA problem. Using this solution algorithm will save companies thousands of dollars, otherwise used to purchase software licenses.

"A South American nickel mine has been producing a nickel concentrate that also contains copper and iron (15 percent nickel, 5 percent copper, 28 percent iron) for the end use of stainless steel production. A critical specification for the quality of the steel is the iron to magnesium oxide ratio (Fe:MgO), with a ratio of below 3.5:1 having a substantial impact on the nickel value. This nickel concentrate producer historically mined the sulfur-rich mineral pyroxenite but had been forced to move to a magnesium oxide/silicate (MgO/SiO4)-rich mineral harzburgite, resulting in nickel recovery being reduced to around 50 percent to maintain the required Fe:MgO ratio. In this study, ore mineralogy, water chemistry and the chemistries associated with the flotation process were evaluated in an effort to increase nickel recovery while maintaining the Fe:MgO ratio according to specification. New chemistry was introduced with the specific goal of complexing with the MgO and retarding its interaction with the bubble flow in the flotation process.IntroductionGlobal nickel production in 2011 totalled to 1,770,000 tons, according to the Raw Materials Group (2013). From 1950 to 2005 there was an aggregate 4.4 percent increase in nickel production, with a market-value high of $1,000/ton nickel reached in 1998 (Mudd, 2010). Approximately 65 percent of nickel production is consumed by the stainless steel industry, with 12 percent of the remainder used in super alloys or nonferrous alloys. Nickel imparts corrosion resistance, temperature resistance and other benefits to its alloys (Table 1) (Oberg, 1996; Cáceres, 2003). The dominant types of nickel-bearing ores are classified as either laterites (limonite: nickel-iron oxide; and garnierite: nickel hydrosilicate) or magmatic sulfide deposits (pentlandite: iron-nickel sulfide) (U.S. Geological Survey, 2013a, 2013b). In 2012, about 40 percent of the nickel ore mined was sulfidic-type ores and about 60 percent was laterite. The processing of laterite ore is expected to continue to increase as the availability of sulfidic ores continues to decline."

"The DC Clean Rivers (DCCR) Project is a 25 year, $2.6 Billion court ordered project to reduce combined sewer overflows (CSOs) discharging into the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers and Rock Creek, and also reduce flooding in the northern areas of the District of Columbia. Like all massive infrastructure programs, DCCR faced technical challenges, management challenges, risks of cost and schedule overruns, procurement challenges, and financing challenges. While DC Water is no stranger to large capital improvement projects (CIP), this CSO Program represents a once in a lifetime event for the Owner requiring the assembly of a single purpose team to implement. Some of the DCCR Project team’s most successful accomplishments to date are attributable to its introduction of early contractor involvement (ECI) to thoroughly vet the work from the perspective of the future constructors, development of functional baselines to share risks that are difficult to price and reduce reliance on geotechnical baseline interpretation during tunnel excavation, and attainment of financing through Municipal Century Green Bonds based on using design criteria of a minimum of 100 year life for the structures to establish intergenerational equity and fairness. This paper will discuss these innovations in detail and provide some sets of recommendations for the underground industry on when and how to use different approaches to better manage projects of this magnitude. INTRODUCTION The District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority (DC Water) is an independent multi-jurisdictional authority that was established in 1996. Its primary mission is to provide water distribution services to more than 640,000 residents in the District of Columbia (District), and sewer treatment and disposal to 1.6 million residents of the District, Montgomery and Prince George’s counties in Maryland and Fairfax and Loudoun counties in Virginia."

The abstract discusses the use of disodium carboxymethyl trithiocarbonate (D8) as an effective depressant in the flotation separation of stibnite and pyrite. The study investigates the mechanism behind D8's selective inhibition of pyrite, utilizing techniques like micro-flotation experiments, contact angle measurements, infrared spectroscopy, adsorption capacity analysis, and zeta potential measurements. The findings reveal that D8 physically adsorbs onto both pyrite and stibnite, but its adsorption capacity on pyrite is significantly higher. This adsorption enhances the hydrophilicity of the pyrite surface, hindering the adsorption of the collector and effectively depressing pyrite flotation, while having minimal impact on stibnite floatability.

The elimination of ultrafine (<10 µm) clay particles is essential to the treatment of abandoned coal-washing plant tailings for the recovery of the remaining coal fraction by enhanced gravity processing. Effective hydrocyclone classification is required to remove this fraction. The highly variable composition and particle size distribution of such wastes creates significant difficulties in the operation of hydrocyclones for such classifications. Hydrocyclone laboratory investigations and their plant setup require lengthy or time-consuming tests. The use of empirical models of such classifications frequently requires modification to correspond to actual operating conditions. Results of the evaluation of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling to predict hydrocyclone classification of coal-washing plant tailings are presented. Results of the standard k-epsilon turbulence, SSG turbulence and large eddy simulation CFD models are compared with the results obtained from analyzed hydrocyclone classifications. The CFD models tested are shown to be very effective in the simulation of hydrocyclone classifications for the determination of the classification particle size and adequate for determining the efficiency index values for many applications. The large eddy simulation model was identified as the most precise, but it is recommended that all three models be improved simulations of classifications above and below the classification particle size.

Separation and identification of minerals composing the Tunisian silica sands have been conducted by acid etching and hot filtration/sedimentation (HFS) without affecting the quartz component. It was found that the hot acid etching process is an effective method to separate quartz and clay minerals in the silica sand. The SEM micrographs of the silica sand show rough surface and some cracks with irregular shapes. The surface becomes clean and smooth after acid etching process. After chemical dissolution, the clay minerals were recovered by hot filtration following by sedimentation at low temperature. FT-IR, EDS maps, and secondary electron (SE) analyses of separated clay minerals reveal the presence of Fe2O3, montmorillonite, and kaolinite minerals. The LIBS analysis of clay minerals shows the presence of Al, Fe, Ca, Al, and Mg. The sequential etching process can be introduced in the purification methods as an effective way to separate quartz from clay minerals.

BRS, Inc. has utilized Carlson&apos;s Natural RegradeTM software to design the reclamation and stabilization of abandoned open pit uranium mine spoils, AML Project 16N, located in the Gas Hills Uranium District in central Wyoming. This work was completed for the State of Wyoming&apos;s Abandoned Mine Land Program (AML) on preSMCRA (Surface Mining Reclamation and Control Act) sites for which no reclamation obligation existed. The project successfully stabilized an eroding spoil dump, enhanced the local view shed, created habitat diversity and provided a significant source of fill material for open pit highwall hazard mitigation efforts. Additionally, the project served to evaluate innovative reclamation design methods, engineering software and grade control technology. This project was nominated for a National Association of Abandoned Mine Land Programs award by the State of Wyoming. The results of this project will be presented as a case history of the Natural RegradeTM approach to surface mine reclamation. Based on the successful application of this new mine reclamation technology on the AML 16N Project, reclamation designs for spoils associated with planned underground uranium mine operations at the Velvet Mine in the Lisbon Valley Uranium District of Utah for Uranium One USA, Inc have been prepared and will be presented. Critical elements will be the encapsulation of unsuitable materials, long term hydrologic stability, and sequencing and staging of ore and mine waste for final reclamation surface construction. The goal of the Uranium One Velvet Project will be to apply best available technology to reclamation planning and fully integrate the reclamation design with the mine planning. Benefits of the approach should include improved public and regulatory perception of the project, facilitate mine permit approvals and the eventual timely release of reclamation bonds, as it is anticipated the stable landform created through this process will result in more rapid stabilization of the site to pre-mine geomorphic conditions. NATURAL REGRADETM CASE STUDY AML Project 16N, D-9 and K Pit Reclamation Project, is located in an intensely disturbed area of the West Gas Hills Uranium Mining District in Fremont County, Wyoming. The overall design calls for the placement of approximately 7 million cubic yards of backfill materials in the D9 and K Pits, imported from adjacent mine spoils including the Central Spoils, and from local highwall excavation. Figure 1 shows the location of the Central Spoils excavation area, as well as the D9 and K Pits fill area. The entire project is located on public lands administered by the Bureau of Land Management, Lander, Wyoming District Office. No access controls are in place at the abandoned mine sites. The public lands are administered under a multiple use land policy including grazing of range land, public recreation, active mining and exploration, and oil and gas. The project site is located along Fremont County Road No. 5, which is a moderately well traveled road. Reclamation of the numerous and large abandoned open pits in the Gas Hills Uranium District has reduced the risk of death or injury to the public. Site History and Background The Gas Hills Uranium District was mined by multiple companies during the period from 1955 to 1981. The uranium was hosted in the Wind River formation, a sequence of soft sedimentary layers of interbedded sandstone, clayey shales, and conglomerates. Uranium was precipitated out of ground water in classic roll front deposits, which are found from very near surface to depths greater than 400 feet. Prior to the enactment of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA), very little reclamation work was performed when mines were abandoned or closed. The State of Wyoming Abandoned Mine Lands Program has worked to mitigate hazards associated with large open pits, control migration of unsuitable materials and restore watershed functionality of lands in the district. Additional reclamation is being performed by mining companies on bonded lands. Figure 2, Gas Hills Uranium District aerial photograph, shows the extent of the mining disturbance in the district. [ ] Project Hazards and Concerns The purpose of AML Project 16N is to mitigate hazardous conditions and risk to the public associated with open pit highwalls and toxic, acid forming, and /or radioactive mine waste materials. The D9 and K Pits are contiguous open pits characterized by an 8,800 foot long hazardous highwall that averages over 200 feet tall. The changes in the elemental contents and the structural properties of chalcopyrite concentrate when roasted were studied, and the main reactions contributing to the leaching process revisited. Firstly, TG/DTA measurements were performed to identify the roasting temperatures that influenced the type of species reacting with sulphuric acid leaching liquor. The temperatures of main reactions, whose output may affect the subsequent leaching process, were analysed for the concentrate at hand, and concluded to be generally lower than those reported in literature. Secondly, the obtained results were confirmed by images and XRD measurements on the roasted concentrate at temperatures in between 350 and 600 °C with increments of 50 °C. Finally, the leaching behaviour of the roasted specimens in a stirred sulphuric acid solution examined and the Cu/ Fe selectivity investigated that the maximum Cu/Fe ratio in the pregnant solution would nearly be achieved for the roasting temperatures lower than 500 °C, since the oxidation temperature of iron sulphate is found lower than that of copper sulphate.

This paper addresses the impact on performance of column height (H), and column height to diameter (H/D) ratio by modelling the effect of HID on mixing and consequently on recovery and grade. Mineral recovery increases with increasing H/D ratio for a constant column volume and feed flowrate, while the concentrate grade decreases to a minor extent. Columns 10-15m in height with H/D-10 are well suited for feed rates 150-600 L/min. Maximum H/D is determined by the gas carrying capacity, an important consideration for pilot units where H/D?200.

Since the late 60&apos;s, planners at American Natural have known that natural gas supplies from traditional sources will be insufficient to maintain a consistently high level of service in the near future. This dwindling of traditional gas reserves will force American Natural and other gas companies to seek new and more exotic sources of supply. In recent years a number of alternative supply sources were considered, including arctic gas, LNG, and SNG based on naptha, LPG and coal feedstocks. Several combinations, all of which included SNG from coal were selected as the most suitable alternative sources of gas supply for American Natural, and thus our company embarked on the formation of a coal gasification project in the early 70&apos;s. Work began with the evaluation of available coal supplies in the United States in late 1970. Western North Dakota was selected for several reasons: large contiguous reserves of lignite were available near the surface, similar to German brown coal for which the Lurgi gasification process was originally developed; the conditions for land reclamation in the area are favorable; and the people in the area have a positive attitude toward well ordered development.

"Molybdenum, in the form of molybdenite, is a common byproduct of many copper mining and concentrating operations. Contrary to most copper sulfide minerals where recovery is principally liberation controlled, the recovery of molybdenite is much more complex with fully liberated particles commonly lost to tailings. It is this complexity that facilitated the necessity for a geometallurgical investigation of molybdenite from the Bingham Canyon deposit. The aim of this investigation was to determine the effect mineralogy and/or mineralogical attributes (i.e. morphology, angularity, liberation, size) have on the recovery of molybdenite in the processing circuit. A set of samples was collected from the ores and products produced by Rio Tinto Kennecott’s Copperton Concentrator. All samples were analyzed using normal polarized reflective light, Mineral Liberation Analyzer (MLA) and X-ray diffractometery (XRD) techniques. The results of this investigation revealed the presence of two distinctly different types of molybdenite, which have been identified as the two polytypes of molybdenite, i.e. hexagonal (2H) and rhombohedral (3R). The 2H polytype occurs as textbook-shaped particles in quartz-molybdenite veins that are located in the core of the Bingham Canyon deposit. The 3R polytype occurs as disseminated, “ball”-shaped particles with a dull or frosted appearance along the margins of the mineralized intrusive body or central core. Concerning their metallurgical behavior each type exhibits unique metallurgical properties that are consistent with those reported in the published literature. For instance, the 2H polytype is easily ground and kinetically “faster” floating with surface attributes that are amenable to higher rates of recovery. This commonly results in the production of a high quality molybdenum concentrate under normal operating conditions common to most copper concentration operations. In contrast, the 3R polytype is difficult to grind and kinetically “slower” floating with surface attributes that less amenable to recovery under normal operating conditions. Therefore, in deposits with higher concentrations of the 3R polytype, modifications to the normal operating parameters may be necessary to improve the recovery of molybdenum. Finally, a preliminary investigation into the metal budget of porphyry Cu and Mo deposits indicates that a positive correlation may exist between the total economic metal budget and the polytype content. For example, higher concentrations of the 3R polytype appear to be more prevalent in Au-enriched porphyries versus Mo-enriched porphyries. This observation may also serve to help explain why it is easier to obtain high rates of recovery in Mo ± W-rich deposits, which contain little to none of the 3R-polytype. Consequently, the potential for the metal budget of a porphyry deposit to be used as an indication of the molybdenite polytype present, as well as its impact on the economics (exploration) and/or on the processing circuit (plant design) could exist. In conclusion, this investigation highlights the necessity of understanding the mineralogical properties or characteristics of molybdenite and/or other economic mineral(s), as these can and will have a direct impact upon the performance and plant optimization."

Introduction In October 1983, Rio Algom Ltd. decided to develop the East Kemptville tin deposit. This decision was the result of intensive geological and metallurgical evaluation work, as well as careful studies of environmental and marketing aspects. The property is located about 54 km (34 miles) northeast of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, near the village of East Kemptville. Geology The geological setting is a granitic intrusive at the contact with metasediment. The tin mineralization is in the form of cassiterite (SnO2), which is about 80% tin. Sulfides are associated with the deposit containing silver, copper, and zinc, which are recoverable as byproducts. The mineralization is associated with quartz veins and greisen alteration. In the center of the deposit, the zones are so close together they have the appearance of a massive or porphyry type deposit. Ore Reserves The mine plan is based on 56 Mt (62 million st) at 0.165% tin. Up to the ninth year, mill feed will average about 0.2% and lower grade material will be stockpiled. In later years, the average grade will be 0.16% tin. A 0.08% cutoff grade is planned for the entire 17 years of production. East Kemptville is a relatively low grade tin deposit, and only a combination of favorable circumstances has made it economic. • The ore body is situated at, or very close to the surface, permitting mining by open-pit methods at a very low stripping ratio. • The tin occurs in relatively large crystals that allow for good recovery by gravity techniques. • It is ideally located in a well-settled area, with all essential infrastructural requirements already in place. • The positive and cooperative response from various governmental agencies involved are encouraging. Mine Plan The mine plan incorporates an initial pit, followed by three expansions to the ultimate pit. Mining will be at 14 kt/d (15,000 stpd) and will include 9 kt (10,000 st) of ore plus 5 kt (5,500 st) of waste and low grade. After five years, the mining rate will increase to 21 kt/d (27,500 stpd). It is planned to drill vertical 165-mm (6.5-in.) blast holes on a 6-x 6-m (20- x 20-ft) pattern. Bulk slurry explosives will be used to break the rock. Loading will be with hydraulic shovels into 70 t (77 st) haulage trucks. The trucks will deliver the ore to a 13 x 20 m (42 x 65 ft) gyratory crusher, where it will be crushed to 150 mm (6 in.). Secondary and tertiary cone crushers will be used to further crush the ore to 13 mm (0.5 in.). Process Design Tin extraction technology is practically unknown in North America, but Rio Tinto Zinc, which has a 53% ownership in Rio Algom, is involved in tin production in the UK. Rio Algom has used this experience and expertise in metallurgical evaluation work and in tin-related aspects of plant design. Mineralogical and metallurgical test work have been performed, both on laboratory and pilot plant scales. Mineralogical work was done largely in the UK, the laboratory test program was carried out at the Lakefield research facility in Ontario, and pilot plant work was conducted in Australia. This program has resulted in significant improvements in recovery and concentrate grades, over best projections that could be made before this work was carried out. Concentrating Process The concentrator is being designed to process about 9 kt/d (10,000 stpd). The first step is to reduce the size of the ore to -700 µm (-24 mesh) in a rod mill/ball mill grinding circuit. The ball mill will operate in closed circuit with high capacity banana-type screens. The model originally proposed by Austin, et al., has been modified in the light of further investigation of the breakage laws in SAG milling. The model uses a fully-mixed reactor for short L/D mills and calculates the breakage of small particles by the nipping action of balls and pebbles. The autogenous self-breakage of larger lumps is treated as an effective means of fast breaking rock and much slower breaking rock. Experiments show that fast autogenous breakage can be treated as a first-order breakage with an overall specific breakage rate which incorporates fracture and chipping. Similarly, slow breakage incorporates fracture and abrasion. Autogenous breakage is cushioned by the accumulation of fine material. Simulation results are compared to results from tests in a 2 m diameter continuous pilot-scale SAG mill. Future work is discussed.

"Working on or near water at active, closed or abandoned mine sites is inherently dangerous. Between 1996 and 1999, the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) reported 17 fatalities involving drowning at U.S. metal, non metal and coal mines (MSHA, 2000). Openpit mines which fill with water following mine closure, called pit lakes, present numerous risks to environmental monitoring teams including: a) drowning, b) hypothermia, c) falls to the ground from the top of high walls, d) collapse of unstable access roads, e) rock falls and avalanches from pit walls, f) avalanchegenerated tsunamis traveling across the lake surface and g) rapid degassing events.Some pit lakes are simply not safely or easily accessible for ongoing monitoring. However, the routine collection of water samples from the entire water column on a regular basis is needed to monitor the evolution of water quality over time, verify the accuracy of numerical predictions and, ultimately, manage lake water chemistry and ecological risks. For pit lakes with surface water discharge, regular monitoring is used to appropriately design and adjust water treatment plants in order to produce acceptable site discharge water quality.As a product of these risks and the need for water samples, mining companies spend considerable expense on pit lake safety as part of monitoring programs. This includes training personnel for on water duties and hazards, purchasing or hiring specialized equipment and personnel (such as boats, boat operators, personal floatation devices and cold-water clothing called mustang suits), stabilizing pit walls and maintaining safe access roads to the lake surface and employing spotters who can directly communicate with emergency medical services to watch sampling activities because cell phones and radio signals can be blocked by pit walls. Some sites utilize redundancy to prepare for unexpected incidents and accidents. For example, one Canadian mining company requires two boats on the water during pit lake sampling events, with a third boat on the shoreline, gassed and ready to go. In addition, water samplers are required to hold Marine Emergency Duties training to ensure the entire boat crew is sufficient and competent for the safe operation of the vessel in the event of an accident."

"Waste electric and electronic equipment currently comprises the fastest-growing waste stream in the world, but at the same time it is seen as an important source of metals for the recycling industry. E-waste is usually treated pyrometallurgically, with hydrometallurgical methods used to a lesser extent. This paper reports the results of research on the selective recovery of copper from smelted low-value electronic waste. Pyrometallurgical pretreatment of the scrap allowed the removal of plastics and the increase of metal content in the material. The obtained alloy of copper, zinc, tin and silver was a multiphase solid consisting of two brass phases and inclusions rich in iron, lead and silver. Copper alloy was further anodically dissolved in ammoniacal chloride solution. It resulted in high degradation of the material and accumulation of the metals mainly in the slime. The slime was then leached in acid or ammoniacal chloride and sulfate solutions followed by selective copper electrowinning. Hydrochloric acid was the most efficient solvent for the slime, but ammoniacal solutions were more selective for copper. Copper could be leached with 96 to 100 percent and 87 percent efficiency from the slime by the chloride and sulfate solutions, respectively. Copper with 90 to 99 percent purity at current efficiency of 42 to 76 percent was obtained from the acid solutions, while copper with 98 to 99 percent purity at current efficiency of 60 to 86 percent was deposited from the ammoniacal baths. IntroductionObsolete electrical and electronic equipment makes up the fastest-growing waste stream in the world (Baldé et al., 2015), due not only to the introduction of wider ranges of new types and models of a variety of electronic products but also to the shortening of their life-spans, sometimes referred to as planned obsolescence by producers (Keeble, 2013). About 42 million tons of electronic waste, or e-waste, are estimated to have been generated globally in 2014 (Baldé et al., 2015), and it is expected that in the European Union alone the waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) stream will reach more than 12 million tons by 2020 (European Commission, 2015). Accurate evaluation of e-waste generation (Wang et al., 2013) and its global transport (Breivik et al., 2014) is difficult, mainly due to a lack of high-quality data related to its market and socio-economic dynamics.Many countries introduced legislation to control e-waste flow, collection and recycling. For example, Directive 2012/19/EU on waste electrical and electronic equipment (European Parliament and the Council of the European Union, 2012) obliges all E.U. members from 2016 to maintain a minimum collection rate of 45 percent of the total weight of WEEE collected. From 2019, the minimum collection rate to be achieved annually shall be 65 percent of the average weight of electronics placed on the domestic market in the three preceding years, or alternatively 85 percent of WEEE generated in the territory of the particular member."

This means balancing the number of samples against the desired accuracy; if there are not enough samples the result is unreliable; if there are too many, the time and expense of taking them is excessive." (McKinstry, et al., 1948).In an actual orebody, the accuracy of sampling depends not only on the number of samples but also on their proper distribution throughout the orebody, for it would obviously be incorrect to take all of the samples either in a rich part or a lean part. Portfolio theory and the Capital Asset Pricing Model (Modigliani and Pogue, 1974) provides an investment decision rationale which takes account of the benefits of diversification in reducing effective risk, but this theory does not consider the financial capability of the firm to survive large losses if they should occur. The LL-curve theory (Wells, 1976) takes the latter consideration into account, but it does not provide for the effects of diversification. This paper pro- poses a general theory to account for both diversification and the financial capacity of the firm to underwrite the investment risks.

"Once every four years, the global mining industry gathers in Las Vegas, NV for MINExpo International. According to the show’s organizer, The National Mining Association (NMA), about 44,000 people attended the three-day show from Sept. 26-29. It was a show that featured the latest and greatest in equipment and technology. It also served as the backdrop for a snapshot of the state of the industry and while the picture of a global industry is never completely clear at any one time, one thing that is evident is technology has become a major force in the way mining is done.Had it not been for the awe-inspiring “iron” that was on the show floor in the form of haul trucks and shovels weighing hundreds of tons, one could be forgiven for thinking that they were at the Consumer Electronics Show. From training simulators designed to give a realistic experience of operating mining equipment to virtual reality technology that can take the user into the depths of an underground mine or the middle of a mapped ore deposit, an overriding theme of MINExpo 2016 was that the mining industry is connected like never before.In the north hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center was the GE Mining booth that was designed to showcase its efforts to help create a mine that will be connected from the front office to the face of the underground wall or bottom of the openpit. GE Mining called its booth a digital mine, and it included a suite of technologies that can improve performance, reliability, safety and operations. GE Mining said it views each mine as a mini-city, requiring power, water and transportation. Intelligent, real-time monitoring across the mine allows operators to make data-driven decisions that improve equipment reliability and optimize mine operations for substantial savings. And GE Mining was just one of many exhibitors showing off software that allows various types of equipment to communicate. Its booth sat in the shadow of the Komatsu booth with its new 360-t (400-st) 980E-4 haul truck that included GE’s 360-t (400-st) electric wheel motor. This is just one example of how technology is connecting machines, operations and people around the world and how mining is moving forward."

The phenomenon of zero order production of fines associated with the batch comminution of monosize feeds in tumbling mills has been examined in the context of the size discretized population balance model. It has been shown that the model admits zero order production kinetics only in an approximate sense. The necessary and sufficient conditions for approximate zero order production of fines have been obtained. As these conditions cannot be expressed in terms of the model parameters Sj and Bi,j alone,. several examples have been used to illustrate some of the important characteristics of the zero order production systems. One of the important characteristics of these systems has been identified as a "weak necessary condition", and the other as a " favourable condition ".

"Australia’s largest rail freight network operator, the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC), has selected GE Transportation’s Movement Planner solution as the key technology enabler for its Hunter Valley-focused network control optimization program.ARTC’s Newcastle-based network control, is the nerve center of Hunter Valley rail operations, where locally based train control professionals make thousands of decisions every day to safely support the annual movement of more than 24 kt/h (26,400 stph) of freight, and tens of thousands of coal, freight, grain and passenger trains each year.ARTC plans to transform its train control function by integrating and then building on Movement Planner, an advanced software solution by GE Transportation that provides real-time rail traffic planning and optimization to enable freight to move more efficiently. “The Hunter Valley rail network is one of the busiest and most complex in the country, supporting the largest coal export port in the world,” ARTC managing director and chief executive officer John Fullerton said.“As bulk freight demands grow, rail operators like ARTC and supply chains like the Hunter Valley coal network need to be creative in the way they respond so the Australian economy doesn’t miss out.
