Waste areas of a mine should be sealed especially if there is a risk of spontaneous combustion. Leakage through and around such seals can be problematic. Pressure balancing has been one of the favored options to prevent the ingress of air into these waste areas. Balance chambers require maintenance and monitoring to ensure that they are effective. This paper explores the use of inert gas as a means of controlling ingress of air and egress of waste gases as a means of reducing leakage around seals.

Editor's note: The subject of mining on the moon can generate a wide range of strongly held opinion, from those leaning toward the view that, ultimately, such activity is the destiny of mankind to those who believe that all suggestions for moon mining to date are unrealistic, wildly expensive and in the hands of people who 'know nothing.' MINING ENGINEERING herewith publishes some of the basic pros and cons on the subject of moon mining by writers who are among those holding strong views on the subject, with the hope that some of our readers may be interested in joining this debate. Every mineralogist and most mineral industry people were keenly interested in the examinations of the first moon rocks brought back by US astronauts in 1969. Suffice to say that the examinations revealed nothing exotic in the mineral makeup of the very limited rock samples. The rocks were generally of igneous type, dark-colored and contained some common, Earth-type minerals. There was, in Earth terms, above average TiO2 content, but they contained nothing of commercial significance by Earth standards. Therefore, interest in moon minerals rapidly faded. Years later, on Sunday, May 4, 1986, living in Reno, NV, this author was shocked to read a local newspaper article by the Dean of the Mackay School of Mines, University of Nevada, Reno, headlined, "Moon Mining Not Far Off." The following is extracted from a report by the author to the International Valuation Standards Committee (IVSC), with minor modifications for the purpose of publication. The author represented the IVSC at the annual session of the Ad Hoc Group of Experts on Harmonization of Fossil Energy and Mineral Resources Terminology. This is a body organized by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). This second session, held in Geneva, Switzerland, achieved an important agreement for advancement toward uniform global standards for the classification of minerals and petroleum reserves and resources. Attendees discussed the possibility of enhancing the United Nations Framework Classification for Energy and Mineral Resources (UNFC) for implementation globally as the classification standard for use in financial reports under the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). Presently, there are between 100 and 200 mineral and petroleum resource classification (or definition) systems throughout the world — a similar number to what there are countries.

Recognition of mineralogical and chemical zoning patterns associated with mineralization is an integral part of mineral exploration. Even though the origin of zoning may not always be known, zoning patterns as expressed by the systematic distribution of ore and gangue minerals, alteration or elemental assays (soil and rock geochemistry) have received much attention and are extremely useful in guiding exploration efforts toward locating economic mineralization. By contrast, the potential of using zoning information recorded in solid-solution minerals to address practical geological-engineering problems has received less attention. Solid-solution minerals can provide critical information for common problems faced in exploration, mine development and valuation. Mineral zoning information from solid-solution minerals can now be easily obtained because advances in electron microprobe instrumentation have made these instruments a most efficient, accurate, economical and practical tool for analysis of large numbers of samples. Now entire mines and districts can be studied in a timely and cost-effective manner as required by modern mineral exploration and mining practice. This article shows how knowledge of the composition of fahlore minerals can be used in addressing important problems in exploration, development and valuation. Situations are described in which drilling intersected "low grade zones" (Case one: Orcopampa, Peru, precious metal system) and where there was a need to determine the "lateral correlation of multiple ore intercepts" (Case two: Sheep Creek, Montana, sediment-hosted sulfide deposit).

The mining industry appears to be slowly rebounding. But many individuals and company officials are still smarting from the beating they received during the recent recession. As a result, companies have taken the "lean and mean" approach. As pointed out at the Oct. 24-26, 1984 SME-AIME Fall Meeting in Denver, CO, companies are placing more emphasis on optimizing their operations through more efficient mining and processing technologies and equipment. Empathizing with the mining industry's woes was the meeting's welcoming luncheon speaker, John D. Withrow, Jr., executive vice president product development for Chrysler Corp. Withrow paralleled Chrysler's problems of a few years ago with the current problems facing the US mining industry. He said Chrysler's come-back centered around its engineering and technical personnel, who regained "their seat at the head table." "In short," Withrow said, "we had lost the competitive edge. By cutting costs and people and improving our products we got everybody to believe we could." The 2700 participants at the Fall Meeting attended technical sessions geared toward turning mining back into a productive and profitable industry. Sessions and symposia included papers on precious metals extraction, crushing and grinding innovations, geomechanics, environmental control, health and safety, and various commodities. This article briefly highlights some of the papers presented. To order preprints of these technical papers, see ME, December 1984, pages 1620 and 1621. Computers Gain Mining Acceptance High tech has reached mining. As evidenced by many papers, computers have become valuable tools in many applications. These include tailings ponds operation and waste management; truck dispatching; mine design, simulation, and scheduling; monitoring; and reclamation. Mine planning is generally labor intensive and requires a considerable amount of the planner's time. P. K. Chatterjee, X. Chung, and Y. Jianjy described a computer-generated interactive graphics approach to under-ground coal mine planning that lessens the manhours involved in producing plans. The computer program examined exploratory borehole information. This included coal seam thickness, tonnage, quality constraints, and the nature of their distribution. Layout designs were then initiated and a probabilistic simulation performed to determine production levels of different extraction strategies. The interactive graphics approach gives planners the ability to quickly evaluate several layout alternatives and select the best one. For surface coal mines, M. A. White, of Arch Minerals Corp., explained several computer programs that aided in his company's surface mine plans. Several drill hole database and modeling pack¬ages are available. But Arch tech¬nicians developed specific pro¬grams for model strip areas. They were used to form long-term pro¬jections for various area and semi¬area stripping operations. They also generated reports on yard¬age, tonnage, quality, and ratio in¬formation. The information is used in budgeting, to compare mine plans, and to analyze acqui¬sition candidates. While computer-based truck dispatching systems have been used in mining for some time, earlier systems were run on ex¬pensive mainframe or high per¬formance minicomputers. As such, computer-based truck dis¬patching systems have been too expensive for all but the largest mines. Recently, however, a microcomputer-based system, af¬fordable to smaller mine opera¬tors, has become technologically feasible. Y. C. Kim and W. E. Kolb re¬ported on a simulated microcom¬puter system that uses strategi¬cally placed signposts in the pit area to automatically detect truck movements. A microprocessor in the signpost sends information to the microcomputer. The computer determines the truck's assign¬ment and alerts the dispatcher. He radios the driver his assign¬ment. In addition to the technical pa¬pers, an introductory short course on microcomputers was offered at the meeting. L. M. Kass and J. P. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has continued study of the Personal Dust Monitor (PDM) developed by Rupprecht & Patashnick Co. Inc. through a CDC contract and currently being commercialized by Thermo Fisher Scientific. This report examines the effect of oversize particles, cyclone inversion, and cleaning procedures. Clean and exposed filters were examined using light microscopy and particulates counted before and after various instrument manipulations. The data presented show that the dry cleaning procedures do not cause significant (greater than limit of detection) sample contamination by respirable or oversize particulates and that the cyclone is resistant to particulate carry over during inversion.

INTRODUCTION King County, Washington operates a regions wastewater treatment system that provides treatment to 18 cities and 16 sewer districts in the greater Seattle metropolitan area. The system serves 1.4 million people and currently includes two regional treatment plants. In 1999, a long-range planning study identified the need for a third regional treatment plant, now known as Brightwater. Prior to this project, the county has almost exclusively used the traditional design-bid-build delivery process for its capital projects. However, with the adoption of the RWSP, the county began to study the potential application of innovative project delivery methods. This paper looks at the project delivery methods used for the Brightwater project, based on the specific needs of this large, complex, and multi-faceted project. THE KING COUNTY WASTEWATER TREATMENT SYSTEM In 1958, voters approved the formation of a regional agency called the Municipality of Metropolitan Seattle, or Metro, to build and operate a regional wastewater collection and treatment system. Prior to the formation of Metro, there were no regional wastewater treatment facilities and pollution of Lake Washington and Puget Sound from untreated sewage was a concern for many residents. In 1994, King County merged with Metro. The county’s 1,087 square kilometer (420 square miles) wastewater service area covers most of urban King County and extends into portions of two neighboring counties. The system includes two regional treatment plants, a local plant, 61 pump and regulator stations, and 571 kilometers (355 miles) of conveyance pipeline which convey wastewater from local districts to the treatment plants. As with other areas, the greater Seattle/King County region has seen rapid population growth. The RWSP estimates that the current system would soon reach capacity, and called for the construction of a new third regional treatment plant, called Brightwater, to be operational by 2010.

The Hutti Greenstone belt, located in the northern side of Dharwar Craton, India, contains several promising gold fields. It is predominantly composed of meta-volcanics with minor intercalations of meta-sedimentaries. Alkali-SiO2 and Zr-P2O5 diagrams, immobile element trends, and an iron-rich trend on the AFM diagram indicate that the volcanic suite is low-potassium tholeiitic basalt. The lower Mg number, MgO-TiO2, MgO-Ni, and Ni-Zr plots reveal that the basalt was derived from a fractionated, highly evolved magma generated by 10-20% melting of the mantle at 1100°C and 5 kb pressure. The chemical variations suggest that the Hutti metabasalt represents volcanic arc rocks generated at a converging plate margin.

Research on the low-potential hydrophobic state of pyrite with potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) as collector, is reported to help explain and understand the fundamental aspects of the N2TEC flotation process, which was originally developed for the improved recovery of gold from refractory auriferous sulfide ores. Typically in the N2TEC process, air is replaced by nitrogen as the flotation gas, and potassium amyl xanthate is used as collector for the reactive auriferous pyrite particles. The first N2TEC flotation process was commissioned at Lone Tree in Nevada in March 1997 and has been in operation ever since. On the basis of electrochemically controlled contact angle measurements, the low-potential, low-pH hydrophobic state of pyrite has been examined as a function of flotation variables such as pH, gas-phase composition, collector concentration and pyrite potential.

INTRODUCTION In June of 2004, at the North American Tunneling Conference in Atlanta, an all-day workshop was conducted to review the application of Geotechnical Baseline Reports (GBRs) for underground construction. The moderator for the program was Bart Bartholomew, former President of Fruin Colnon Construction Company. The program involved commentary by a panel of engineers, owners, contractors, and legal representatives within the North American tunneling industry, as well as an extended audience discussion. The panelists were: Peter Douglass, President, Peter Douglass, Inc. Randall Essex, Executive Vice President, Hatch Mott MacDonald Joseph Gildner, Deputy Director for Technical Services, Sound Transit Randall Hafer, Esq., Kilpatrick Stockton Robert Fitzgerald Esq., Watt, Tieder, Hoffer, & Fitzgerald Kirk Samuelson, Senior Vice President, Kiewit Construction Group DEVELOPMENT OF PROGRAM FORMAT The focus of the program was to assess the state of the practice in the preparation of GBRs, and to discuss improvements that could and should be made with regard to their preparation, interpretation, and application. The approach used to achieve this focus in the broadest possible way was unique, in that it involved the panelists’ preparation of the workshop format and materials months before the presentation of the workshop. First, each of the six panelists was selected by the moderator based on their reputation and involvement in their respective fields of expertise, taking care to maintain balance and contrast within the collective pool of talent assembled. Following selection and agreement to serve on the panel, each panelist was asked to independently submit to the moderator a list of the six most pressing issues involving GBRs that they each frequently encountered in their individual professional experience. Each was asked to rank their issues in descending order of perceived importance. This process resulting in a pool of thirty-six potential or “candidate” issues for use in the workshop program. Contrary to the moderator’s expectations, there was surprisingly little duplication among the thirty-six issues submitted.

Booster fans in underground coal mines are often located using the concept of a neutral point. Normally, intake airways are maintained at higher absolute pressure than return airways, so air leaks from intake to return. By adding a significant pressure force to a region of a ventilation system, booster fans installed in a return airway can increase the pressure in the return so that air leaks from return to intake. This is commonly referred to as recirculation. The neutral point occurs at the location in the system where the pressure difference between the intake and the return airway(s) is zero and at this point there is no leakage or recirculation. Ideally, placing a booster fan near the neutral point minimizes leakage and recirculation; however, in practice the position of the neutral point is not static and it changes as the ventilation system parameters change. This paper presents a study of how changes in the system parameters affect the location of the neutral point in a model coal mine ventilation system. First the effects of booster fan pressure and location on the neutral point are evaluated. Next the effect of increasing mine distance, and therefore mine resistance, on the location of the neutral point and the magnitude of recirculation is evaluated.

The sign of the surface charge of selected potassium soluble salt minerals namely KClO4 , K2SO4 , KNO3, and KCl was determined from nonequilibrium electrophoresis measurements and found to be negative for each of the salt. Dodecylamine flotation of these salts revealed that the concentration of amine required for flotation increases in the order KClO4< K2SO4< KNO3<KCl. Precipitationof the amine collector colloid was not required for flotation of the oxyanion salts and in this case it appears that adsorption of the dodecylamine cation is sufficient to create the hydrophobic surface state. The order for flotation is explained in terms of surface hydration of these respective potassium salts based on contact angle measurements and FT Raman spectroscopic characterization of water structure.

The Expert System implemented at the East-Malartic mill controls a copper flotation circuit while taking into account the profitability of the operation. Treating a copper gold ore, the flow sheet integrates a flotation step followed by cyanide leach circuit. The Expert System calculates the actual net smelter revenue of the flotation circuit, accounts for the operating cost of the cyanidation circuit and defines optimal metallurgical operating targets to optimize the overall economics. To be realistic, probability factors and circuit diagnostic analysis are integrated in the operating target selection. The Expert System has proved to be successful, robust and flexible. It resulted in a copper concentrate grade increase of 1% while maintaining recovery. The use of the expert system also gives plant personnel good training procedures and promotes interaction with mill operator.

The paper proposes three methods to determine optimum lifetime of a mining project1. The conclusion is that the three methods arrive at the same optimum production rate (by coincidence). It is also stated that: "The stochastic and option pricing models, in addition to providing a more realistic optimum mine life than the traditional NPV (net present value) calculation, showed that the example project has the potential for substantially higher return. By explicitly considering a project&apos;s potential risks, the stochastic or option pricing techniques can more accurately describe its probable investment performance." This discussion is intended to demonstrate that: • It is no coincidence that the three methods arrive at the same optimum production rate. • The stochastic and option pricing models do not provide a more realistic optimum mine life than the traditional NPV calculation. • The potential for a substantially higher return is misrepresented. First, a review of investment decision theory in mining is needed. Net present value is the preferred performance measure because of the flexibility offered when comparing various alternatives. However, it presents the following disadvantages: • The discount rate selection is not straightforward. • The NPV obtained represents a deterministic characterization of the variables included in the cash flow calculations, i.e. a single-point estimate.

Ground falls (roof and rib) have historically been responsible for about 50% of all fatalities in bituminous underground coal mines. In some recent years, the number of ground fall fatalities has approached zero, indicating that significant progress has been made. On the other hand, last year?s Crandall Canyon twin mine disasters, in which 9 miners perished in violent coal bumps, provided a stark reminder that complacency is premature. One important success has been a great reduction in the number of miners killed inby roof supports. Throughout the 1990?s these accounted for nearly half of all roof fall fatalities, but there have just been two inby incidents in the past 5 years. Progress has also been made in pillar recovery. Safer mining technologies have reduced the number of fatal incidents, but some recent failures have underlined the need for careful management of the retreat mining process. On the other hand, more than 400 miners continue to be injured each year by rock falling from between supports, and 100 more are injured by rib falls. Together, these two categories also account for a large percentage of recent ground fall fatalities. Available technologies such as roof screen, rib bolting, and inside control roof bolters could dramatically reduce injury and fatality rates if they were used more widely. Further advances in these areas will likely be the next big advance in ground control safety. Tracer gases have been utilized successfully in a variety of industries, each with specific releasing and sampling methods. The various attributes of tracer gases are dependent on the industry the tracers are utilized in. Tracers must be chemically and thermally stable, safe, odorless, detectable at low concentrations, have a low background concentration, and should not be naturally occurring in the environment if they are utilized in underground mining applications (Thimons et al., 1974). In addition, the tracer gas should be inexpensive, non-corrosive, non-toxic, easily transportable, readily attainable, and non-radioactive (Kennedy et al., 1987). Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) met many of these above requirements and therefore was introduced as an ideal tracer gas to use in mining industry in the early 1970?s (Thimons et al., 1974). Due to the nature of underground mining including complicated geometry, irregular flows, turbulent flows, obstructed airways, and leakages it is difficult to use conventional anemometer and smoke tube techniques to accurately measure the effectiveness of ventilation controls (Thimons et al., 1974; Klinowski and Kennedy, 1991). There have been several applications of SF6 as a tracer gas in underground metal/non-metal and coal mines. Thimons et al. conducted early testing of SF6 in an underground limestone mine and determined that it is an effective technique for evaluating auxiliary fans, estimating volumetric flow rates in large areas, and measuring low flow velocities. A rapid face ventilation measurement method (FVM) utilizing SF6 was developed by the Bureau of Mines to make face measurements in underground coal mines (Timko and Thimons, 1982). When measuring the effectiveness of jet fans in dead headings SF6 was proven more effective than smoke tubes (Timko and Thimons, 1982). Experiments related to determining methane liberation in the gob were also conducted by injecting SF6 into a borehole (Timko and Thimons, 1982). Also, in an emergency situation where the gob had to be sealed due to a fire, SF6 was released to determine the effectiveness of the seals (Timko and Thimons, 1982).

Up to 3 million tons of automotive shredder residue (ASR) is generated annually in United States. Plastics are the most valuable component of the ASR material making up approximately 25% of the total weight. In order to reuse these plastics, a selective process is required to separate each plastic, with very high purity and favorable economics. One separation technique, which may be able to selectively recover the plastics from ASR, is flotation. The preliminary flotation results have demonstrated that acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) and polycarbonate (PC) can be selectively separated from the model ASR feed, the PC/ABS/PA 66 system, by appropriate control of the surface chemistry.

The Pebble Cu-Au-Mo deposit in southwest Alaska is one of the world&apos;s largest porphyry deposits. The western part of the deposit was discovered by Cominco America in 1987, who sold the project to Northern Dynasty Minerals Ltd., in 2001. Northern Dynasty discovered the high-grade eastern part of the deposit in 2004 and went into a 50:50 partnership with Anglo American PLC in 2007, forming the Pebble Limited Partnership (Lang et al., 2008). The Pebble Limited Partnership has continued to delineate the deposit through diamond drilling with the most recent resource estimate released in February 2010 (Pebble Limited Partnership, 2010). The Pebble deposit mineral resources comprise 5.94 billion tonnes of measured and indicated resources grading 0.78% Cu EQ, containing 55 billion pounds of copper, 67 million ounces of gold and 3.3 billion pounds of molybdenum. Also delineated are 4.84 billion tonnes of inferred mineral resources grading 0.53% Cu EQ, containing 25.6 billion pounds of copper, 40.4 million ounces of gold and 2.3 billion pounds of molybdenum (Pebble Limited Partnership, 2010). Resources are calculated using a 0.3% Cu EQ cutoff. GEOLOGY AND MINERALIZATION Deposit Geology The Pebble deposit is located in the Kahiltna terrane, between terminal strands of the north-east-striking Lake Clarke strike-slip fault. This fault represents an accretionary boundary and separates the Kahiltna terrane to the north-west from the Peninsular terrane to the south-east (Lang et al., 2008). The Pebble deposit represents a large magmatic-hydrothermal system centered on a group of 90 million year old porphyritic hornblende granodiorite intrusions. An east-west cross section through the southern part of the deposit (Figure 1A) shows the typical relationships between the various rock units which host sulfide mineralization. Sub-parallel ~96 million year old granodiorite and diorite sills were intruded into siltstones of the Jura-Cretaceous Kahiltna flysch. In the west, these sills were cut by a ~96 million year old alkalic intrusive complex composed of porphyritic monzonites and monzodiorites and related intrusion breccias (Bouley et al, 1995). The mineralized 90 million year old hornblende granodiorite intrusions cut all rock types and comprise four small stocks in the western part of the deposit and a larger pluton in the eastern part of the deposit. Recent deep drilling indicates that these intrusions coalesce at depth. The strongest porphyry-style mineralization is centered on the eastern granodiorite pluton and extends into the surrounding rock units (Figure 1A). The western half of the deposit crops out at surface, whereas the eastern side is un-conformably overlain by a cover sequence of Late Cretaceous to Eocene sedimentary and volcanic strata. The deposit was tilted 20º to the east during the Eocene.

More than 95 percent of all the barite mined and produced is used in the petroleum industry as “drillers mud.” The remaining barite is used in the industrial and medical markets. Therefore, the amount of drilling activity is a good indicator of the health and growth of the barite industry. The four major barite-producing countries in the world are China, the United States, India and Morocco. In 2005, the average number of drilling rigs exploring for oil and gas increased by about 15 percent over the average number in 2004. This increase in oil and gas exploration has resulted in a higher demand for barite and an increase in barite production.
