The usual figures quoted for water usage in South African gold mines are 1 ton of water used per ton of rock broken, which represents a consumption of 4000 litres of water every second. Owing to the limited sources under ground water, the high cost of surface-water supplies, and the environmental problems of effluent disposal, water IS recycled continuously for underground use. This paper reviews the various types of water treatment and why water needs to be treated. The uses of lime and some flocculants are considered, since much of the mine service water requires only simple neutralization and clarification. Where mining depths necessitate the installation of underground refrigeration plant, more stringent water requirements must be met, and where plant performance is to be maintained, the prevention of system scaling and corrosion is necessary. The families of chemicals added to provide such protection are outlined, together with a description of the mechanisms of control.

Earlier work had shown that the use of water jets at moderate pressure enhances mechanical cutting in hard rock. To assess the potential of this technique for use in conjunction with free-rolling cutters, a series of laboratory tests was conducted with disc and button cutters to determine the effect of variations in the jet and cutting parameters on the cuter performance. In these tests it was found that the use of water jets at pressure in the range 5 to 40 MPa can reduce the forces on a free-rolling cuter by 40 per cent, which represents a significant improvement in cutting performance. The reduction in thrust force was found to be dependent on jet pressure: the greater the pressure, the greater the reduction. The reduction in rolling force was independent of jet pressure over the range investigated. The results indicate that no additional improvements in cutting performance of any significance are to be gained by an increase in jet pressure above 40 MPa. The most effective jet configuration for the reduction of cuter forces was found to be four coherent water jets, two lateraly disposed on each side of the cuter and directed at the arc of contact between the cutting edge and the rock.

The Mineral Resource that a mining company has access to, represents the majority of the embedded value that exists within the company, as well as the competitive advantage that the company has over its peers. However the real value is only realised once effective mining plans have been put in place, which optimise the extraction of the Resource, and add measurable value to the Company. The concept of Mineral Resource Management has been developed in South Africa, to ensure this optimisation happens in an integrated and quantifiable manner, such that value is added and risk is reduced, resulting in bottom line improvement for the stakeholders of the business. This paper describes the process of Mineral Resource Management, and draws on successes and failures of various companies, to illustrate how it should be implemented, and what measures should be put in place to ensure its success. This requires a fundamental re-appraisal of the way in which mining companies plan and execute their businesses, and focuses attention on real value adding activities and behaviour through the use of Economic Value Added as an appropriate metric by which to measure real value and risk. Specifically, the paper focuses on these aspects as applied to planning models and processes, exploration activity and risk management, to ensure operational and project success.

The Iscor Board has given its Mining Division the authority to proceed with detail engineering and design for a Heavy Minerals Project which comprises a mine in Northern Province near Gravelote, a mine in KwaZulu/Natal near Richards Bay and a central processing complex with a beneficiation plant and smelter which will be located near Richards Bay and Empangeni.

A people-centric, systematic approach that involves different stakeholders is considered necessary to successfully address changes associated with modernizing the South African mining industry. In this paper we discuss the inclusion of various South African mining industry stakeholders, particularly the employees, in equipment design and development processes. Data was acquired through a literature review and inputs from South African mining industry stakeholders through focus group discussions, interviews, and an online survey. It was suggested that some of the areas that could be improved by the inclusion of employees in the process are design quality, ergonomics, equipment acceptance by the workforce, safety, efficiency, skills, insight into context of use, and early design iterations and identification of problems. Among the issues considered to be barriers to inclusion were lack of buy-in, lack of resources, difficulty in manufacturers accessing the mines, difficulties in involving too many people, intellectual property concerns, and unavailability of mine employees due to their key responsibilities. Identified critical factors in the equipment design and development process include iterative design, stakeholder participation throughout the process, needs analysis through consultation, and change management. A guideline was developed for worker inclusion in equipment design and development that could be used by the South African mining industry. The study identified several economic and social benefits of including stakeholders in the early stages of design and development. It is recommended that the South African mining industry considers using the developed guideline.

The minerals industry needs the support of al sections of the population if it is going to be able to supply the new materials required for future development. It will achieve this support only if its image is good. Perceived images of the minerals industry are examined in respect of history, technology, environment, safety, education, and economics. Concern is expressed about the low technological image of the industry and the declining number of students enrolling in minerals-related disciplines. It is concluded that it is the professionals, through institutes like The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, who must take the lead in improving the image of the minerals industry. The Presidential Address gives data to support this thesis; data that, is hoped, can be used in efforts to educate people about the minerals industry.

This paper reviews the theoretical methods used in South Africa for the prediction of heat pick-up and air-temperature gradients along main haulages. These methods include those of Starfield, Ramsden, McPherson, and Goch and Patterson. The differences in predictions based on typical airway conditions are explained as being due to differences in the mathematical models on which the predictions are based. The largest discrepancies were found for dry airways and for airways with bulk air coolers. The errors in predictions of the effect of machines and coolers that have been running for only a few months are calculated, and the limitations of various simplified methods are discussed.

The hazard of rock bursts and rock falls as experienced in South African gold mines is examined in the light of recent research findings. The problem areas include high fatality rates, losses in production and equipment, and a detrimental influence on the recruitment of labour. The nature of the hazard is analysed, and it is shown that rock bursts are strongly related to the spatial rate of energy release by mining but that rock falls are not. The role of blasting and geological discontinuities is discussed. Practical rock-burst control strategies are compared, including the use of stabilizing pillars, back-filling and, in particular, techniques for reducing the frequency and severity of accidents resulting from large rock bursts. The latest stope-support experiments and their potential implications to mining are consid~red. It is concluded that a better understanding of the rock-burst and rock-fall hazard has resulted from the industry's research efforts. The findings can be applied towards obtaining an improved underground environment for men and machines.

DECEMBER, 1971 The Wanders Club, Johannesburg Sunday, 9th April, to Friday, 14th April, 1972 The Tenth Symposium which is the first ever held outside the North American continent is being organised by the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (with the South African Council for Scientific and Industrial Research and the South African Council for Automation and Computation), in collaboration with the previous co-sponsors. '" The programme includes over 60 papers from thirteen different countries. Attendance promises to be good and interested parties who have not yet registered are earnestly requested to do so without delay. The closure date for registration application is 31st January, 1972. The objective of this symposium is to pool experience and knowledge and to discuss new and potential developments for the planning and control of mineral projects. The papers which are to be presented will indicate the progress which has been made in this direction through the successful application of operations research, mathematical, statistical and computer methods. The intention is to bring together those persons responsible for managing various operations in the mineral industry with those engaged in the development of such mathematical and computer techniques as could assist this management. The main theoretical and experimental work that has been carried out by the National Institute for Metallurgy Research Group at the University of Natal is presented. The two experimental flotation plants available to this Group are described.

Various methods for the beneficiation of minus 0,5 mm coal are examined briefly, and tests are described on a cyclone of 150 mm diameter operating with magnetite as the medium. It was found that, for sharp separations, at least 50 per cent of the magnetite should be finer than 1Oµm. At that size, the ash content of the product was about 7 per cent at yields of 59 to 64 per cent, and the loss of medium was reasonable (about I kg per ton of fines treated).

Without minerals, man cannot possibly hope to maintain his present standard of living. Professional mining men throughout the world, particularly in mineral-exporting countries like South Africa, are faced with the increasingly difficult task of ensuring adequate supplies of minerals. The problems of gradually diminishing mineral reserves and rapidly rising mining costs can to a certain extent be overcome by the use of more-sophisticated technological techniques and by the improvement of efficiency wherever possible. However, there is growing concern in some quarters, that, despite the ingenuity of engineers, geologists, metallurgists, and scientists, the earth's mineral reserves will eventually become insufficient to meet man's needs. In order to ensure the continued well-being of the earth's population, it is therefore imperative that more attention should be paid to mineral research and the training of specialists in the field of mineral reclamation.

Noise is a form of pollution arising mainly from the activities of man. One such activity is mining, in which man, as in many of his other activities, uses machinery of various kinds to achieve safe, healthy, and economic production. Trackless mining makes use of an advanced state of technology over that required In traditional mining methods. One of the advantages of the former, as distinct from any disadvantages it may have, is a reduction in noise levels, the number of people exposed to noise, and the duration of their exposure to noise. This paper briefly examines why noise is a problem and what various countries are doing about it in terms of standards, codes of practice, and regulations. It also investigates the extent to which noise is a problem in mining and how trackless mining alleviates this problem. The question is then posed as to whether South Africa is not setting too high a standard at this stage of its national development by comparison with what is being done by other, more-advanced countries.

The lift system is the main part in manganese nodule mining on the ocean bed. It connects the nodule collection system (miner) with the surface platform (mining vessel) and transports the nodules from the ocean bed to the surface. China started the research on lift technology in deep ocean mining in 1991, and a slurry pump hydraulic lift method has been developed for the nodule mining system. The detailed slurry pump hydraulic lift experiments have been undertaken with crushed nodules in the vertical pipe. The lift parameters to lift coarse particles in the lift pipeline have been discussed, including the pressure drop, the solid concentration, and the mixture velocity. The author of this paper not only took part in all these studies on the lifting technology, but was also responsible for some of this research. This paper will present the component parts of the lift system and the research results of coarse particle mixture flow in the vertical lift pipeline. The large proportion of gangue minerals present in platinum bearing ores in South Africa provides challenges to the flotation and down stream processes. In order to take effective measures to reduce their recovery in flotation an understanding of the mechanisms and factors influencing their behaviour is needed. Typical gangue minerals are pyroxene, feldspar, quartz, chromite and talc. Of these, talc is a naturally hydrophobic mineral and although it is present in relatively small quantities, it has a disproportionate effect as it has a strong froth stabilizing effect, increasing the recovery of other gangue minerals by entrainment. Talc recovery is effectively reduced with the addition of polymeric depressants. Although the other gangue minerals are assumed to be hydrophilic and their recovery by entrainment is expected to follow the water recovery, there is some evidence that they may be activated by the typical reagent suites used. Reagents such as copper sulphate, added as an activator, and collectors are used to selectively induce hydrophobicity on the sulphides. It has been shown that some of these gangue minerals can be activated. This research work investigates whether inadvertent copper activation is mineral specific and evaluates the mechanisms and factors affecting the reversal of activation with the addition of the depressants using electrokinetic measurements, adsorption and microflotation tests. Results are presented that show that the selected minerals do respond differently and that the reversal of activation is dependent on mineral type, depressant type, dosage and ionic strength of the electrolyte.

A method for the calculation of the economic optimum spacing of raise connections in 'scattered' mining layouts is described. The method of calculation and the results obtained in a case study are presented. An indication of how the overall optimum spacing (which satisfies both economic and geological considerations) can be determined is also given. " The case study demonstrates that, even with the present strike-cleaning systems,significant savings in working costs can result from an increase in the spacing between raise connections. Furthermore, improvement of the present systems would result in a considerable increase in these savings.

A system of artificial support for shallow mines is described, analysed, and evaluated. The system can be designed rationally to support a predetermined overburden load, and tests have shown that the design theory gives accurate predictions of strength. The support system, consisting as it does of two basic materials, reinforced granular material and reinforced cemented material, is flexible and can be varied to suit changing requirements of height and load. The system of preloading to the design load by jacking off the roof ensures that the walls are both stiff and prooftested.

The price received for a commodity decreases as the quantity sold increases. all other factors remaining the same. This has been the position with gold since it was demonetized in August 1971. The result is that the marginal revenue per kilogram of gold decreases steadily with increased production. If operating losses are to be avoided, the marginal cost of production must not exceed the marginal revenue. This requirement, although not seriously violated by most invididual mines, is not met by the industry as a whole, resulting in large losses of income to the State and the shareholders. These losses are increasing, and a way of curbing or reversing this trend is described.

A series of experiments was caried out in a vacuum-induction furnace to investigate the solubility of nitrogen in stainless steel type 3100S. Melts were made under constant and variable partial pressures of nitrogen so that the absorption of nitrogen from the atmosphere could be examined. Additions of nitrogenized ferochromium were made to give high nitrogen contents in the steel. Nitrogen contents of up to 0,16 wt per cent were obtained under gaseous atmospheres. With additions of nitrogenized ferochromium, nitrogen contents of up to 0,525 wt per cent were obtained. Comparisons of the later value with existing data indicate that the equilibrium concentration of nitrogen was reached for the experimental conditions used.
