The number and scale of backfilling operations in the South African gold mining industry have grown rapidly in recent years. The application of backfilling as a means of stope support in a wide range of geological conditions and mining systems has resulted in the development of a variety of alternative fill systems. Experience gained in the evaluation of operating fill systems has contributed to a knowledge of the essential concepts to be considered in their design. This knowledge can also influence management's perception of what is expected of a backfilling system. The factors to be assessed in stating and satisfying these objectives are examined. The areas of investigation cover the selection of a suitable material, its preparation, distribution and placement, and the engineering logistics involved in the management of such a system. Finally, the integration of a filling system with an existing mining operation is examined.

At ISCOR the quantitative determination of the structural properties of coke is done with a Leitz-TAS Image Analysis System. A reflected light microscopic image of a coke sample is converted into a binary image and stored in computer memory or on hard disc. By means of mathematical and stereological techniques the system can transform the images electronically. A lightpen can be used to determine the sequence of these operations. TASIC, which is based on BASIC language, is used as the program language on the computer. The majority of the programs are written by the user to ensure satisfactory results for specific studies. The computer controls the whole system, including the movement of the microscope stage, focusing, transformation and measurement of the image and data processing. The computer is also applied for establishing statistical correlations between the structural and other coke and coal parameters as well as for graphics and predictions of the coke structure. Factors affecting the structural properties of coke are discussed and conclusions are drawn.

In the wake of the financial crisis that affected world markets in 2002, there has been an increasing international focus on corporate governance. Various corporate governance codes of practice have been introduced, such as the Sarbanes-Oxley legislation in the USA, the Combined Code in the UK, and King III in South Africa. This focus on corporate governance has increased since the most recent financial crisis in 2008, the effects of which are still being felt world-wide. In the mining and minerals industry, reliable metal accounting is essential to sound corporate governance and is also becoming a focus of increased attention and concern, particularly as the figures generated by the metal accounting system feed directly into the financial accounts of mining companies. Mass measurement, sampling, and analysis provide the input data for the metal accounting system and sound corporate governance requires that the procedures used are based on best practice and that the data generated is accurate and handled correctly, transparently, and consistently to produce the accounting reports. The AMIRA Code of Practice for Metal Accounting has been widely adopted in the industry as a means to achieve this, and the compilers of the Code have conducted numerous metal accounting audits at operations, both in South Africa and abroad. The use of testwork to establish an economically feasible separating plant has been a long established practice in the mineral processing industry. However, uncertainties in orebody characteristics and equipment/plant operation can have a significant impact on the separation performance of a given project. This paper explores the impact of uncertainties derived during testwork at key processing stages on the overall performance of mineral processing flowsheets. Case studies for both mineral sand and iron ore projects will be used to illustrate the concepts studied in this paper.

Determination of the optimum cut-off grades is one of the most important aspects of mine production planning. A cut-off is a grade below which we choose not to process material. This material is treated as waste and dumped. Dumping waste is accompanied by the rehabilitation cost which will affect the overall cost of final production and also the optimum cut-off grade. Rehabilitation cost is the cost per ton of rehabilitating material of a particular type of rock after it has been dumped as waste. One of the most popular algorithms for determination of the optimum cut-off grade is Lane?s method. Lane formulated the cut-off grade optimization, but he did not consider rehabilitation cost during the optimization process. This cost item should be evaluated first, and then considered during the cut-off grade optimization process. In this paper the rehabilitation cost is inserted directly into the cut-off grade optimization process using Lane?s theory. The cut-off grades obtained using the suggested method will be more realistic than ones using the original form of Lane?s formulations.

Decision making can be defined as the selection process of the best routes from the alternatives in order to achieve a goal, and mostly involves uncertainty. Additionally, mostly qualitative variables (weak rock, massive ore deposit, etc.) are in question. Mine planning engineers often use their intuition and experience indecision making. As fuzzy set theory has been used since 1970, these uncertainties are easily evaluated in the decision-making process. Real world study is decision making under vague constraints of different importance, involving uncertain data (qualitative variables), where compromises between antagonistic criteria are allowed. This paper presents a new approach in the selection of an underground mining method based on fuzzy set theory for the Ciftalan Lignite Site located close to Istanbul in Turkey. The physical parameters such as geology and the geotechnical properties of ore, hanging and foot wall, economic effects, environmental effects, are established with field and laboratory tests together with the determination of other qualitative variables. Meanwhile, some qualitative variables dealing with the matter was described according to the view of a number of experts. Then fuzzy set theory is applied to these parameters, considering the available underground methods in order to choose the proper method. At the end of the evaluations, the room and pillar method with filling was determined as the most suitable method for the test site. The utilization of software is now inherent to virtually every activity along the mining value chain. However, apart from the software survey done by Gibbs in the 1990s and work on the extent of diffusion of information and communication technology (ICT) in the South African platinum sector by Mugodi and Fleming in 2003, the nature and extent of software utilization in the South African mining industry has never been evaluated. The Mine Planning, Optimisation and Valuation (MPOV) Research Group in the School of Mining Engineering, University of Witwatersrand, therefore initiated a project to collate and analyse the current utilization of software in the South African mining industry. This was done through the development of a web-based database of the relevant software. Snowball sampling was used to collect the data because the South African mining industry is diverse and software utilization is fragmented across and within the sectors of the industry. The data was then organized into distinct categories so that the information from a variety of sources could be evaluated on the same basis. A beta version of the database can be accessed online through a user-friendly front-end platform at http://db.mining.wits.ac.za. The database is expected to help at least 13 educational institutions with decisions on facilities and training that are vital to the education of mining and mining-related professionals. Exploration, mining, and consulting companies will also benefit from information in the database relating to availability and useful combinations of software solutions. The database is also strategic to software providers by providing a better understanding of their respective relative market share along the mining value chain. An analysis of the data collated in this research shows that about 77% of the software users are mining companies, 17% are consulting companies, 3% are mineral exploration companies, and the rest are software providers and educational institutions. The software used in the South African mining industry is largely provided by Gemcom Software International, MineRP Solutions, and MRM Mining Services. CAE Mining, who in 2010 acquired the Datamine Group providing Datamine software, is also widely acknowledged as a major software supplier in South Africa, but data from them had not been obtained at the time of producing the beta version of the database due to proprietary constraints. The work reported in this paper is part of an MSc research study in the School of Mining Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand. Recovered activated carbon fines result from processing of ore and concentrates via cyanide leaching and sorption of valuable metals on carbon at gold-mining plants. This intermediate product is characterised by the particles sized smaller than 0.6 mm and gold grade up to 300-500 g/t. Processing of carbon fines with recovery of valuable metals is not available at many plants due to the lack of optimal technology. The paper describes the testwork and development of an efficient technology to process carbon fines with the recovery of valuable metals into the target gold alloy. This innovative technology involves pelletising of fine activated carbon particles using an organic binder, drying and further firing of pellets in a grate fired furnace at 800-900 °С. The produced ash is subject to sintering with sodium nitrate and hydroxide at 600-700°С. The sintered ash is then leached in water. The insoluble residue containing gold and silver is removed by filtration, dried and smelted to produce gold alloy. Water solution containing sulphur and arsenic is subject to detoxification. Processing of recovered carbon fines according to the developed technology implies the use of standard full-scale equipment. The offered method to treat gold-bearing carbon fines was patented by the Eurasian Patent Office. High pressure grinding roll (HPGR) technology is used in an increasingly diverse range of applications, predominantly iron ore , gold and diamonds. KHD Humboldt Wedag HPGRs are applied world-wide, and consistently prove to be well designed and reliable operating units, with their performance meeting the pre-set standards. This publication summarizes some of the features and experiences for recent applications in treatment of copper ore, coarse iron ore, and gold ore. Summary data of roll surface wear life and operating data are given, together with operational observations. In addition, effects of feed segregation and truncated feed are discussed, as well as the implications of a product recycle flow sheet.

Thirty-one years ago, African leaders met in Lagos for the drafting of the Lagos Plan of Action for the Economic Development of Africa, 1980?2000. The main objective of the plan was to increase Africa?s self-sufficiency and in this regard, the plan had a section pertaining specifically to redressing the ills of an unproductive mining and minerals industry and harnessing its potential for socio-economic development. However, if we look at the nature of this sector on the continent today, its characteristics resemble the diagnosis of the sector given in the plan back in 1980: lack of information on endowments of minerals; lack of value added in the sector; low development and use of those endowments that are not of interest to transnational corporations (TNCs); and most importantly, low contribution to socio-economic development. The primary consequence of the lack of visible benefits to African states, despite growth and development of the sector in terms of increased mining activity led by Foreign Direct Investment is that countries with mining industries are characterized by dysfunctional internal processes. Improvements in governance, monitored with indices such as those set out in the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, the Millennium Development Goals, and other such ?good governance? agendas, are being asserted. However, before we prescribe the introduction of initiatives or guidelines based upon highly subjective norms which we believe to fit this diagnosis, it is necessary to review how it is that we got to this situation that we are in today. How is it that, 31 years after the Lagos Plan of Action, we have not seen any major changes in the role the industry can play in socio-economic development, despite the vast increase in mining activity on the continent?

ROM grade variability is one of the most important factors influencing plant product recovery. Due to the influence of grade variability on mine profits, it is deemed important to guarantee a proper homogenization of the ore through a well-planned blending and homogenization pile system from which the ore is reclaimed at an acceptable grade fluctuation. This study tests geostatistical simulation efficiency in predicting in situ grade variability. The methodology is illustrated using a data-set from a large phosphate mine in central Brazil. Additionally, real data obtained at the mine site during January and February 2007 were used to derive the actual grades of each pile formed during this period. Each pile was formed by a selection of blocks within a dig line and these lines mined along the year 2007 were also made available. Given the real grades, it was possible to reconciliate and validate the results predicted by the proposed methodology. The main outcome of this study is the opportunity to check the geostatistical simulation as a tool to quantify the variability of the homogenization system.

Mineral hydration is known to result in low flotation recoveries and grades within primary platinum group element ores worldwide. This is because the phyllosilicate minerals derived from hydration reactions of silicate minerals (i) form electrostatic coatings on valuable minerals that in turn hinder collector adsorption, (ii) alter the viscosity of the slurry leading to poor gas dispersion and (iii) decrease the concentrate grade due to naturally-floating gangue. Sodium silicate was investigated because its dispersant, rheology modifying, and depressant properties could prove promising in combating the problems associated with these ore types. Quantitative evaluation by scanning electron microscopy analysis revealed large quantities of serpentine and talc present within the ore sample used in this study, which led to a poor flotation response as indicated by batch flotation tests. Using sodium silicate improved the recoveries and grades at high dosages (>1000 g/t). The zeta potential experiments indicate that improved recoveries are, in part, as a result of the reversal of serpentine surface charge, creating electrostatic repulsion between serpentine and valuable minerals which prevents the coating of valuable minerals by serpentine slimes. Ore dilution and rheology tests indicated that decreased viscosity at high dosages also improved recoveries. Talc micro-flotation tests revealed that the depression of talc occurred at higher sodium silicate dosages, which improved concentrate grade. The processing of nearsurface altered ores is becoming an increasing problem worldwide and the use of sodium silicate proved valuable in mitigating the problems associated with the altered ore investigated in this study. Uranium in the tetravalent state has very low solubility in acid and alkaline solutions and needs to be oxidized to the hexavalent state to become soluble. In acid leaching of uranium the uranium is oxidized by ferric iron, which in turn is reduced to ferrous iron. The reduced iron needs to be oxidized to the ferric form to allow the uranium dissolution reaction to proceed. This paper considers the known and proven oxidants used in acid leaching of uranium. These include manganese dioxide, sodium chlorate, hydrogen peroxide, ferric iron, oxygen and sulphur dioxide/air (oxygen). The reaction chemistry of each oxidant as well as the practical applications are considered and discussed. All the oxidants discussed work adequately in acid leaching of uranium and it is possible to engineer solutions for the use of the oxidants in acid leaching on plant scale. The availability and supply of the oxidant as well as the cost and environmental impact of the oxidant plays a major role in the selection of a suitable oxidant. The location of the plant will also have an impact on these issues.

"A system has been developed to simulate the mining of the Mufulira orebody. The main output from the system is a picture-gram from which the start date and effective life of all proposed mining faces can be measured. This information provides schedule dates for the completion of major capital development projects and stope preparation activities.The orebody must be divided horizontally into main levels and vertically into blocks of equal interval. Ore reserves are defined by specifying the tonnage contained in each block and main level. Mining faces are defined by their co-ordinates, and may themselves be split into sublevels. The simulation maintains an echelon between contiguous sublevels. Other face parameters control the speed of mining, the availability and relative priority of the face.The required production from each crusher/shaft system is specified. The technique of simulating the mining process in order to achieve the required production is described."

Wet stirred media milling is a widely applied grinding process in the field of mineral processing to produce <10 μm ground materials. In this paper, the results of wet stirred media milling of different Ti, Fe and Cu-oxide and phosphate minerals are presented. During the experimental work, grinding of ilmenite, vivianite, hematite and cuprite was carried out in a continuous operation wet stirred media mill. During the experiments, the particle size distribution and specific surface area of the ground materials were determined after a certain grinding time, as well as measuring the specific grinding energy, thereby determining the grinding kinetics of the different minerals. The measurement results showed the differences and similarities in the grindability of the individual minerals. Nano particulate vivianite, hematite and ilmenite was successfully manufactured in a stirred media mill; however cuprite was characterised as the coarsest final product for the same grinding circumstances. The PPRust North project is an expansion of existing operations on the ?Platreef? orebody in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. Anglo Platinum has been mining and processing the Platreef since 1993 at the adjacent Sandsloot and Zwartfontein South open pits at a current rate of approximately 4.5 million tons per annum. This paper describes the origin of the proposed process flow sheet. A comprehensive test work programme has been conducted evaluating the best process flow sheet for the very hard and variable ore in the proposed mining area. The selection of the comminution circuit is discussed where conventional crushing and SABC options were analysed based on both extensive test work and analyses of current operational data at the existing concentrator. The application of the high pressure grinding roll technology has significant advantages?it replaces the 3rd and 4th stage crushing stages in a conventional circuit. This programme has been conducted over several years and has involved work done at site at pilot scale, internally at the company?s research facilities and externally at various sites. The on-site pilot work was completed over a 7-month period at the existing concentrator facility using a ThyssenKrupp-Polysius, ?Polycom?, 950 mm by 350 mm, high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) machine. In excess of 185 000 tons of ore was processed through the unit during the trial period. This paper describes the test work programme and particularly the proposed application of high pressure grinding technology and its potential for further application in the platinum industry.
