This paper updates an earlier report by the authors that studied electrical injuries from 1992 to 1998. The previous information is expanded and supplemented with fatal and nonfatal injury rates and trends through 2002. Injury numbers and rates were used to compare and trend electrical injury experience for various groups and categories. This information allowed identification of at-risk groups that could most benefit from effective electrical safety interventions. The data presented in this paper are derived from the U.S. Labor Department?s Bureau of Labor Statistics? Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries, Survey of Occupational Illnesses and Injuries, and Current Population Survey. Between 1992 and 2002, 3378 workers died from on-the-job electrical injuries. Electricity remained the sixth leading cause of injury-related occupational death. From 1999 to 2002, 4.7% of all occupational deaths were caused by electricity, down from 5.2% in the 1992?1998 time period. The cause of death was listed as electrocution in 99.1% of fatal cases. Contact with overhead power lines was involved in 42% of all on-the-job electrical deaths. The construction industry accounted for 47% of all electrical deaths between 1992 and 2002 but showed overall improvement from 1995 to 2002 by reducing its electrical fatality rate from 2.2 to 1.5 per 100 000 workers. In addition, 46 598 workers were nonfatally injured by electricity. Contact with electric current of machine, tool, appliance, or light fixture and contact with wiring, transformers, or other electrical components accounted for 36% and 34% of nonfatal electrical injuries, respectively. Contact with underground buried power lines was involved with 1% of fatal injuries and 2% of nonfatal injuries. The research of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health aimed at evaluating commercially available overhead power line proximity warning alarms is described. This paper is expected to be the initial step for eventual development of a performance standard for such systems.

Overexposure to noise is a widespread, serious health hazard in the mining industry, and causes hearing losses to a large percentage of the mining population. Recognizing this fact, the Bureau has a major on-going research effort to address this problem area. These proceedings include an overview of the Bureau noise control program and summarize nine selected noise control research programs.

This report describes the washability characteristics of 18 coal samples taken from 11 drill hole cores from the San Juan Basin area of New Mexico and Colorado. The ash content of these coals could generally be substantially reduced by removing the heavy impurities. The coals were characteristically low in sulfur content; only one sample contained more than 1 percent sulfur after removing the sink-I.50 specific gravity material. The coals ranged in rank from subbituminous C to high volatile C; 11 of the samples were subbituminous A. Many of these core samples came from areas where very little fieldwork has been done; consequently, an outgrowth of this work has been an increase in known coal reserves of the San Juan Basin area.

Roof bolter occupations in underground coal mines continue to experience overexposure to respirable dust. One potential source of dust in roof bolting operations is the exhaust from the roof bolter dust collection system. A wet exhaust conditioner (?water box?) has been developed to reduce dust emissions from the exhaust of the vacuum dust collection system on roof bolting machines. The exhaust conditioner consists of a muffler chamber and a water chamber with four internal partitions to direct airflow over the surface of the water. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health conducted a series of laboratory tests to assess the respirable dust capture ability of this device as compared to the standard exhaust muffler. To determine the dust collection efficiency, both devices were placed in the exhaust stream of a simulated roof bolter dust collection system. Gravimetric samplers were operated upstream and downstream of the exhaust conditioner and muffler to evaluate the ability to capture both respirable coal and limestone dust. Researchers observed a 41 percent reduction in dust concentrations for the water exhaust conditioner in the laboratory configuration. Significant levels of dust deposition in the sampling chambers may have contributed to this effective capture rate.

The Bureau of Mines Minerals Information organization collects worldwide data on virtually every commercially important non fuel mineral commodity. These data form the base for tracking and assessing the health of the minerals sector of the U.S. economy. This data collection activity was instituted by the 47th Congress in an appropriations act of August 7, 1882 (22 Stat. 829), to place the collection of mineral statistics on an annual basis. The most recent authority for the Bureau of Mines Minerals Information activity is the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980 (Public Law 96-479, 96th Congress), which strengthens protection for proprietary data provided to the U.S. Department of the Interior by persons or firms engaged in any phase of mineral or mineral-material production or consumption.

The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER ACT) established a Technical Study Panel (The Panel) to provide recommendations on the utilization of belt air and new technology that may be available for increasing the fire resistance properties of conveyor belt used in underground coal mines. The Panel Report recommended use of the Belt Evaluation Laboratory Test (BELT) as the method for testing and approval of flame resistant conveyor belts used in underground coal mines. The research conducted to establish the correlation of the BELT with large-scale belt fire flammability tests was done using 36- to 42-in wide conveyor belt. Due to today?s coal haulage capacity, the mining industry is using 72-in and wider conveyor belts. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a study to determine if the BELT will also qualify wider belts as fire resistant for use in underground coal mines. This paper describes the results of recent experiments comparing results from using the BELT and the large-scale tests for six different belts.

Workers using vibrating hand tools have the potential for developing health problems associated with repeated forceful actions and exposures to hand-transmitted vibration. Hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) and other hand-arm system disorders have been associated with such exposures.1-2 To better assess health risks, comprehensive evaluations of these exposures must include quantitative assessments of hand-tool coupling forces; unfortunately, no standardized method for quantifying hand forces exists. Handle instrumentation may be ill-suited for some field environments. Psychophysical force-recall techniques may provide alternatives to handle instrumentation. A thorough understanding of the effects of vibration and other factors on force-recall accuracy and reliability is important before such methods are applied in risk assessments. Methods In this study, the effects of vibration and other factors on the accuracy of psychophysical force-recall were explored in two experiments. Twelve male subjects participated in the first experiment. The second experiment employed 20 participants (10 female, 10 male). In each experiment, participants applied specific grip and push forces to an instrumented handle mounted on a shaker system. Participants were exposed to sinusoidal vibration at frequencies that ranged from 0 Hz to 250 Hz. Three levels of applied force (low: grip = 15 N/push = 25 N, medium: grip = 30 N/push = 50 N, and high: grip = 45 N/push = 75 N ) and two levels of vibration magnitude (low: ANSI 4-8-hr limit and high: ANSI <0.5-hr limit)3 were examined. During the vibration exposure period, participants were provided with visual feedback while they attempted to “memorize” the applied grip and push forces. At the conclusion of the vibration exposure/force memorization period and a controlled rest period, the participants tried to duplicate the grip and push forces on a non-vibrating handle without the aid of visual feedback. The effects of different vibration frequencies, vibration magnitudes, and grip and push force levels were tested in a random order from trial to trial. Results Participants tended to overestimate grip and push forces. Depending on exposure conditions, error means ranged from 2 N to 10 N. The ANOVA revealed that force-recall errors for exposures between 31.5 Hz and 63 Hz were significantly higher than those at other vibration frequencies (p < 0.05). The frequency effect is depicted in Figure 1. Error means were greater when participants were exposed to the higher vibration magnitude (mean = 9.1 N, 95% CI = 8.2-10.1 N) when compared with the lower vibration magnitude (mean = 4.9 N, 95% CI = 3.9-5.8 N) (p < 0.05). The Windigo Theilson RARE II area has a low mineral potential. There are no mines or claims in the area. The only observed results of mining activities were five prospect pits near Tolo Mountain. Samples from these pits contained no significant assays. The study area contains more than 190 million cu yds (145 million m3) of cinders in 17 cones. Development of these cinders is unlikely because their locations are remote, and other sources supply area needs. The Geological Survey has classified the area as prospectively valuable for geothermal resources. However, there has been no geothermal exploration activity.

In modern warfare mica is truly indispensable. The coordination of combatant units necessitates maintenance of intricate communications equipment, in the construction of which high-grade sheet mica is essential. Scrap, ground, and the poorer qualities of block mica, which are less essential to the military program, are not considered in this paper. Furthermore, as the paper is designed primarily to assist mica miners, mica derivatives such as splittings and films are also excluded from discussion. The paper therefore relates solely to block mica of strategic quality.

This study was undertaken to provide a more adequate knowledge of the chemistry of the sulfide volatilization process for recovery of tin from low-grade Bolivian ores. The investigation was partly supported by the Department of State under its program for scientific cooperation with South American republics. The results of this investigation demonstrate the conditions under which cassiterite (Sn02) may be converted to stannous sulfide by reaction with pyrite or sulfur vapor, Quantitative data are given on the rate of sulfidization and on the vapor pressure of stannous sulfide.

Physiol. 11): L365–L374, 1994.—Although integrity of the alveolar basement membrane may influence progression of lung injury induced by inhaled particulates, little is known about direct effects of coal dusts on the alveolar epithelium or its extracellu¬lar matrix (ECM). Effects of dust on synthesis of cell and ECM proteins by type II cells (T2P) was thus investigated. Three coal dusts (anthracite no. 867; bituminous no. 1451 and no. 1361) and mine dust MIT-3, of respirable size, were studied as a function of dose and time over 3 days of primary T2P culture. On day 1, 750 µg/ml of 867 were required to increase relative synthesis of ECM proteins (ECM/cell). MIT-3, 1451, and 1361 were without effect. By day 3, 867 or MIT-3 increased ECM/ cell 60-100% at 300 µg/ml; 1451 produced modest, dose-dependent stimulation, whereas 1361 remained without effect. None of the dusts caused significant cytotoxicity. The results show dose- and time-dependent effects of well-characterized coal and mine dusts to modify partitioning of newly synthesized proteins into the ECM and suggest that coal dust exposure may modulate structure or function of the subepithelial basement membrane.basement membrane; cell culture; inorganic dust; lung injury; extracellular matrix deposition; pulmonary epitheliumCHRONIC EXPOSURE to coal dust may be associated with development of pulmonary fibrosis and consequent loss of normal lung function (see Ref. 26 for review). Al¬though the pathways of inorganic dust-induced lung injury are recognized to involve an inflammatory re¬sponse, the underlying pathogenic mechanisms are not understood in detail. Acute and chronic responses to dust exposure involve a variety of interacting cells of the immune system, including macrophages, T cells, and B cells, along with pulmonary fibroblasts. These responses reflect direct effects of the dust particles, as well as indirect effects mediated by soluble factors, including cytokines and eicosanoids (see Ref. 41 for review).Studies of pulmonary macrophages and fibroblasts following silica exposure suggest that dust-induced damage at the airway surface may involve cellular injury through oxidant-mediated pathways. Coal dusts and related inorganic particulates can activate the alveolar macrophage (42) to produce fibronectin (15) and cytokines, such as interleukin-1 or tumor necrosis factor (4) and/or other soluble products which act locally (29) to cause acute cellular injury and to initiate the progression of fibrotic lung damage (16). Type I epithelial cells are typically more susceptible than type II cells to oxidant injury. Type I cell damage and subsequent death leads to denudation of the subepithelial basement membrane (2, 21) and can be associated with leakage of plasma constituents from the pulmonary vasculature into the alveolar compartment (13)."

This is the fourth progress report in the series on the use of detachable rock-drill bits in the metal mines of the United States. It contains comparative statistics and costs or drilling at eight mines not reviewed in previous reports, comparison of the use of detachable bits at small mines and large mines, a discussion on the life of drill rods, and general conclusions derived from an analysis of the rock-drilling practice at all the mines investigated on this survey. This paper completes the descriptions of operating practice in rock drilling at individual mines. Data on drilling practices at 28 mines are given in appendices I and II and drilling costs are shown in appendix III. Research in the fundamentals of rock drilling, including the use of detachable bits, has been undertaken by the Bureau of Mines in its testing adit at Mount Weather, Va. Reports on the progress off this investigation will be issued when results warrant their publication.

In recent years, west-central Arizona and adjacent California have become the focus of geologic and exploration attention because of its excellent exposure of detachment-fault terrane. Detachment faults, normal faults with nearly horizontal fault planes, are the result of regional extension. Rocks on the lower plate consist of mylonitized intrusive, metasedimentary and crystalline rocks highly altered to chlorite; upper plate rocks comprise sedimentary, volcanic, metasedimentary, and metavolcanic rocks. The movement of the detachment fault causes the rocks on the upper plate to be severely fractured and brecciated thus making them Ideal conduits for mineralizing fluids. Mineralization favored the more reactive sedimentary and volcanic rocks of the upper plate. Three gold deposits, located in upper plate rocks, are currently being mined along the Colorado River corridor: the Picacho Mine near Yuma, Arizona, 70 mi south of the study area; the American Girl Mine In southeastern California, 60 mi southwest; and the Copperstone Mine near the southern end of this study area. Samples from the above three mines were used to create a geochemical model of detachment-related gold deposits. Antimony, arsenic, barium, copper, mercury, molybdenum, manganese, tungsten, and zinc all occur In the mine samples in concentrations at least three times greater than found elsewhere in similar rock types. Samples taken by the Bureau from the wilderness study areas contain similar anomalous concentrations of the same elements as well as elevated concentrations of several other elements Including: lead, fluorine, cerium, uranium, and samarium.

Reduce the respirable dust exposure of the roof-bolter operator when downwind of the continuous miner, particularly in mines where respirable dust standards are more stringent because of silica in the respirable dust. Dust Sources If roof-bolter dust levels are excessive, the bolter dust collector should first be checked to ensure that it is operating properly. (Technology News No. 219 provides information on how to spot and repair bolter dust collector problems). If the roof-bolter dust collector is operating properly and dust levels are still excessive, then the source is most likely a continuous mining machine operating upwind. In many sections, the roof-bolter operator must work on the return side of the continuous miner during part of the production cycle. ackleg rock drills are widely used in the mining industry and are known to generate high levels of hand-arm vibration which contribute to the development of the hand-arm vibration syndrome for exposed miners.1-3 To reduce the vibration levels, a prototype of an antivibration handle was developed as part of a previous study.4 To provide some bench marking for this handle prototype and to follow the evolution of its performance over time, a test bench was developed to characterize the vibration emission values of jackleg drills under controlled operating conditions. As the current ISO 8662 series of standards could not apply directly to this type of tool, there was a need to design and validate a test bench to evaluate the vibration emission values of jackleg drills, while taking into account the conditions specific to the operation of this type of tool. Methods A test bench including an energy absorber, was developed for testing jackleg drills based on the ISO 8662-3 standard 5. The energy absorber was bolted to a 3300 kg concrete block to ensure tool stability. A pictorial view of the device is given in Figure 1. For validation purposes, acceleration measurements at the handle of a conventional jackleg drill were taken simultaneously along the three axes (xh, yh and zh) in an underground rock drilling operation as well as on the test bench. The handle accelerations were measured for three different jackleg angles (13º, 28º and 43º) determined with respect to the floor. Moreover, each measurement was repeated at least three times to asses the data repeatability. [ ] Results As a preliminary validation of the test bench, Figure 2 provides a comparison of the frequency weighted rms acceleration spectrum measured along the zh-axis, for both underground drilling and operation on the test bench (28º jackleg angle in both cases). It is shown that the vibration measured on the handle of a jackleg drill operating on the test bench is representative of that recorded during typical rock drilling operations, despite the fact that some harmonics of the percussion frequencies are generated with a higher amplitude on the test bench.
