"This paper summarizes the activities performed to predict SAG milling throughput at Minera Esperanza. Having highly reliable geometallurgical models aided by the new computer tools and specific metallurgical testing to rely on has become a major issue in recent times due to their impact on the business. Minera Esperanza’s SAG throughput model was constructed by characterizing the ore feed and operational parameters of the plant. Producing a robust model required satisfying number of requirements for the parameters used for both the ore and the plant as follow: 1) geologic and geometallurgical characterization parameters; and 2) parameters of a plant running at the rated production under optimum operating conditions. Obtaining these parameters required increasing the quantity of samples and metallurgical testing through drilling campaigns, mapping the drill holes and putting samples through various comminution tests while sampling all operational flows at the plant to obtain the metallurgical information for the operational parameters. The information was entered on the JKSimMet software to enable a throughput model to be developed to output SAG mill throughput predictions that are very close to actual throughput figures, i.e., accurate within a range of 2% on a monthly basis."

Throughout Chile?s history, mining has consistently been a leading industry in the country. The 1990s marked the beginning of a boom in Chile?s mining industry, especially in copper mining, due to both foreign and local direct investment in the sector. Mining?s contribution to the GDP was 15.6% at current prices in 2009, and it accounts for 56% of the country?s exports. Chile?s copper market share reached 35% in 2009. The investment portfolio in mining in Chile for the coming decade has been estimated at 90 billion US dollars. The acute scarcity of human resources currently experienced by the mining sector in Chile will be accentuated in the coming decade as a result of this scenario of investments. The situation is, additionally, similar to the one confronted by other countries involved in the mining industry such as Australia, South Africa, Canada, and in Latin America includes, Peru, Colombia and Brazil. A study carried out by Fundacion Chile, ¨Labor Force in the Chile Mining Industry, Diagnostic and Recommendations, 2011-2020? shows the projected labor shortage for the operation of projects in the development stage, considering only the requirements of the process of extraction, processing, and maintenance. The demand, accumulated incrementally, will be around 115,000 technically skilled workers, professionals, and qualified workers. This figure refers to the operational work force, and does not include the human resources that will be required for the prior stage of the engineering and construction of the projects (brownfield and greenfield). The demand for technically skilled workers and professions for the stages of engineering and construction of the projects that have already received investments is estimated to be 190,000 people for the period 2012-2020. The peak of the demand for engineering is 2012, with a figure that surpasses the 12,000 professionals for all of the engineering specialties. The analysis of the formation of human resources at the tertiary level (where tertiary includes technical/vocational and academic degrees at the undergraduate level) for mining and related majors demonstrates that the programs are scarce with a bias toward theoretical contents and that they are excessively long (40% longer than comparable programs in Australia, Canada, and in OECD countries). The completion rates are low, especially in the technical-vocational programs, which have a completion rate of only around 30%. Finally, the rates of attraction of technically skilled labor and professionals towards careers in mining are insufficient to reduce the identified skill gaps. In the case of university professionals such as geologists, mining engineers and engineers in metallurgy, 80-90% will work in mining. In the case of graduates of relevant majors, that cover skills also utilized by other industries, not only mining?such as maintenance workers, operators of fixed and mobile equipment, etc.?the mining sector appears to be unattractive for reasons such as shift schedules, geographical location of work sites, and other factors. On the basis of the available diagnosis a strategy for the sector has been developed (Workforce Development and Skills Strategy) whose objective is (i) to define a Mining Qualifications Framework to identify the critical roles to be filled (ii) to start, with public resources, a ¨fast-track? training program to assure the availability of at least 28,000 operators (machinery operators, truck drivers, etc.) and maintenance specialists in 2015 (iii) to promote the development of training hubs for mining with learning technologies to train technical labor and professionals on the basis of world class standards (iv) to design and implement a campaign oriented toward the perception of mining as an attractive field of employment opportunity (v) to develop curricular innovations for tertiary education programs, on the basis of international benchmarks. "Movement of mill charge in the centrifugal mill is essentially dissimilar from that in the vibration mill with circular path despite the apparently similar mode in the motion of mill body. This dissimilarity is the reason for the substantial advantage regarding the comminution intensity of the centrifugal mill over the conventional vibration mill accounting approximately to one order of magnitude.Bradley et al. (1983) developed a math model regarding the mill charge as a lump. This model is presented in a simple equation with which motion of the mill charge can be predicted in terms of the parameters describing the specification and the operation of the centrifugal mill. This equation can be used to explain the power draft of the mill as well as the stability of mill operation. More recently, on the other hand, a numerical simulation technology called discrete element method (DEM) has become a vital vehicle for estimating the motion of the grinding media in the mill. The authors developed a mill simulator called ‘Mill Solver’. Mill Solver is designed to simulate various types of mills including centrifugal and vibration mills. The principle of this simulator is to calculate individual kinetic events of interaction of balls in the mill in a minute time interval, hence the mill performance can be constructed for estimation."

The application of centrifugal separation methods with the use of gravity concentrators has been assigned high priority while gold-containing minerals processing. The separation proceeds under centrifugal force resulted from the rotor spinning and wash water flow in the concentrators. The high specific gravity particles are retained at the trapping surface of the cone, and the low specific gravity particles are brought in the tailings. The centrifugal field in such concentrators (Knelson, Falcon) is generated by the rotating cone provoking the swirling of the free fed slurry flow. The author investigated the regularities of the separation process in the centrifugal gravity concentrator where a two-phase flow of the separated mineral media is under the pulsed pressure of the fluidization water and air. As a result of the study the possibility of the deeper penetration of the fine heavy fraction into the cone rings, providing the fluctuation of the fluidization water or air flow, was theoretically argued and experimentally proved. This allows the increase of the separation performance at low pulsation costs. The developed mathematical models are in close conformity with the actual process of interest and they enable the prediction of the heavy phase behavior at the isolated process stages in the concentrator. "Impact crushers are widely used in different industries to crush materials which can vary from soft to hard and from ductile to brittle. However, the sizing of impact crushers is still based rather on empirical than on scientific approaches. Therefore, a test rotor was developed in order to investigate the principles of comminution by impact. Rocks of diabase with different diameters were used to gain the crushing properties with the following results:RESISTANCE AGAINST CRUSHINGLikelihood of BreakageThe likelihood of breakage is a function of the impact velocity and the particle diameter. The likelihood increases with higher velocities and larger diameters. Maximum Crushing ForceThe crushing force is related to the area of projection of the rock. The smaller the particles and the higher the velocities the larger are the maximum related contact forces.Contact TimeThe contact time increases with the rock diameter whereas the influence of the impact velocity is neglectable.Mass Specific Crushing WorkThe mass specific crushing work decreases with the particle diameter and increases with the impact velocity."

"Recent developments in image analysis techniques and the power of computer hardware have spurred international interest in the potential uses of image analysis techniques in a range of industrial applications. One of these applications is the control of the complex flotation process. Despite years of work, the flotation process is still poorly understood. Current attempts to control flotation cells focus on consistently duplicating the control achieved by human operators.In human control of flotation two of the dominant visual cues are the froth flow speed and the froth stability. These two factors can be measured and inferred respectively from image analysis of video of the froth surface. Two important hydrodynamic variables for control of the flotation process are the air addition rate and the level of the froth pulp interface.The current work focuses on the relationship between froth flow speed and the rate of recovery of concentrate from a flotation cell. Results are presented that show a strong relationship between flow speed and concentrate yield. These results include tests where the conditions in the cell were not changed, as well as tests involving changes to the cell level and air addition rate. Preliminary results are presented which show a correlation between froth stability and froth percent solids.Future developments of the system will include comprehensive froth texture typing, colour space and stability analyses."

"Particle scale simulation of industrial particle flows using DEM (Discrete Element Method) offers the opportunity for better understanding the flow dynamics leading to improvements in equipment design and operation that can potentially lead to large increases in efficiency, throughput or product quality. DEM has been used for modelling many industrial applications, particularly milling. This includes ball and rock motions and power consumption in ball mills, AG and SAG mills, vibrational segregation, flows in rotating drums, operation of dragline excavators and hopper flows. In mineral processing, DEM has been concentrated on mills because of their critical importance. However DEM also offers the opportunity to improve many other parts of mineral processing operations. These areas often do not receive the attention that the key comminution equipment commands, but can become critical when they fail or under-perform. Importantly their assessment/improvement using DEM is often much more feasible because of smaller problem sizes and the absence of poorly understood physics such as breakage. In this paper we describe DEM simulations of four important pieces of non-comminution equipment that are commonly found in or near mineral processing plants (these are shown in Figure 1):"

"Over the last 5 years, an ambitious project has been undertaken at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) aiming to isolate, study and, if possible, model the effect of particle size, liberation and collector adsorption density on the floatability of mineral particles. As part of this project, we have conducted highly controlled flotation test-work, combined with state-of-the-art solution and surface analytical techniques such as High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Time of Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (TOF-SIMS) and detailed mineralogical analysis to fully characterize the flotation behavior of a natural ore.The flotation tests were undertaken using a high-grade lead-zinc ore from BHP-Billiton's Cannington mine (Australia) in a specially designed continuously operated laboratory scale flotation rig. Solution and adsorbed collector concentrations were measured independently during the course of the flotation tests using HPLC based ex-situ techniques. Liberation studies were performed using the JKMRC Mineral Liberation Analyser (MLA) on selected size intervals of different streams to estimate the specific surface area of galena. These results were used to calculate the collector adsorption density (collector coverage) on galena particles, with the eventual aim of developing a mathematical model describing the relationship between pulp chemistry, feed mineralogy, and floatability of galena particles."

"The effects of mixed collectors on some physicochemical parameters (thin film lifetime, kinetics of expansion of the three-phase contact, equilibrium three-phase contact angle and surface tension) involved in the elementary act of flotation were investigated experimentally.We have used the microscopic thin balance developed by Scheludko et al (1970) to study the stability and interactions within the thin film between the silica surface and air bubble with (i) a long chain C10 amine and (ii) a cationic/anionic surfactant systems consisting of mixtures of a long straight C10 chain amine with long straight chain C8, C10 and C12 sulfonates at 1:1 molar ratio. The experiments were performed at a range of concentrations at pH 6.5. The equilibrium contact angle was measured with a microscope technique using the modified Mingins-Sheludko method (Mingins and Scheludko, 1979). The surface tension was measured by the method of Wilhelmy (Adamson, 1960). It was found that the mixed surfactants caused lower contact angles, lower rates of the thin film rupture and longer film lifetime, compared to the pure amine system."

In the flotation process, control of the stability of the froth is extremely critical. In the case where the froth is too stable then mechanical entrainment of particles can occur but in the opposite case, where the froth is too unstable and difficult to skimm-off, then a reduction in recovery can result. In minerals and deinking flotation, commercial fatty acids are used and may act as both both collectors and frothers. However, frequently the fatty acids are mixed with nonionic ethoxylated surfactants to give more effective froth control and increase the flotation performance. It is of interest to note from the surface chemistry literature, that such mixtures may cause synergistic effects in surface activity which may explain changes in bubble size, foaming and carry over of particles. In the present study, we have carried out foaming and drainage experiment with oleic acid and model nonionic surfactants; hexa(ethylene glycol) mono-dodecyl ether, C12E6 and tetra (ethylene glycol) mono-dodecyl ether, C12E4 both in separate and mixed systems. Frothing was carried out in a column, equipped with a series of conductivity electrodes which enabled the water content of the froth to be measured along the length of the column, during various stages of the drainage process. The variation in water content of the froth enabled the process to be characterised by distinct three stages; (a) an entrainment state where the water transfer from the bulk phase to the froth was dominant (b) a steady state when entrainment and drainage are balanced and no water is transferred to or from the froth and (c) the drainage step when drainage predominates and the volume of the bulk phase increases. We also carried out surface tension measurements on the oleic acid/ nonionic systems and related the results to the frothing and drainage performance. From the surface tension data, the adsorption interaction parameter of the mixed systems at the air/solution interface could be calculated and was found to depend on the oleate/ nonionic surfactant ratio. This value was related to the frothing performance and the results indicated a positive interaction parameter for the mixed surfactant systems which could explained the synergistic effects in frothing performance.

An effective monitoring of the variables involved in the operation of a heap leach, such as pressure, flow rate, pH, water level control and regulator valves can improve production and optimize the use of sulfuric acid, which results in a more effective management of resources and helps reducing input costs. Moreover, the constant monitoring of variables prevents the risk of landslides, reducing maintenance costs. In electro winning cells, the wireless solution measures variables such as pressure, flow rate, temperature and voltage provides a performance indicator for the entire operation, capable of detecting and predicting shorts, and monitoring the overall functioning of a cell or group of cells. As a result of the applications studied, users can monitor variables in real time, optimizing the use of resources, quickly detecting possible flaws in the process and reducing the risks in the operation. All these factors have a direct impact on company results."

India hosts a wide range of globally significant mineral resources, including four fuel minerals; 11 metallic minerals; 22 minor minerals and 52 non-metallic minerals. The country ranks among world?s top five nations for its commodity reserves of coal and iron ore. Interestingly, only small part of country's landmass has been explored that provides opportunity for future substantial mineral discoveries. India plans to double infrastructure investments to US$ 1trillion. Despite the challenges in infrastructure project implementation, mining sector remains a key driver of demand growth for commodities in the years to come with a good prospect to grow in future.
