"Absolute magnetite contents were determined for asbestos specimens in various stages of milling by using a Faraday-type thermomagnetic balance. Comparison of these results with magnetic ratings (MR) supplied by the mining companies cooperating in this study reveals strong scatter. The main cause of this scatter is thought to be that the MR values were obtained in magnetic fields well below the saturating field of magnetite (5,000 oe). However, only the saturation moment is an intrinsic property and consequently must be used for the purpose of obtaining reliable estimates of the magnetite content. Curie points indicate that virtually pure magnetite and possibly Ni3Fe is present in all samples, and another phase, probably (Cr, Al) magnetite, is present in a few samples. The susceptibility in fields stronger than 5,000 oe is positive and falls in the normal paramagnetic range, whereas sy nthetic chrysotile exhibits weak diamagnetism. This suggests that, as a general rule, the least adulterated natural chrysotile concurs with the samples showing the smallest positive susceptibility above 5,000 oe. The magnetite appears to increase in quantity with a decrease in fibre length and to be somewhat more uniform in distribution for samples showing substantial fiberization (opening of the fibres)."

Abosso Goldfields Limited has been optimizing the comminution circuit at the Damang Mine Operation for the treatment of 100% primary ore. The optimization process started at a base rate of 343 tph when treating primary crushed primary ore, and was increased to above 600 tph with partially crushed primary ore. Abosso Goldfields engaged Orway Mineral Consultants (OMC) to assist with the optimization process in 2009 and the two companies have been working together since, to further refine the process. Continuous improvement was achieved through crushing circuit modifications, changes in operating processes and grinding control system utilization. This paper discusses the improvements developed for the increase in milling capacity and improvements in final product size.

"The general geology of the Great Bear Lake area has been described by; D. F. Kidd in the Summary Report of the Geological Survey for 1932. A brief description of the Eldorado mine was prepared by C. S. Lord for Memoir 230; Mineral Industry of the Northwest Territories; published by the Geological Survey in 1941. Recently; a detailed geological examination of the mine area has been initiated by the Geological Survey and; under A. W. Jolliffe's leadershif; J. D. Bateman; H. B. Thurber; and M. Feniak have prepared a number of maps and reports; as yet unpublished. Detailed mapping of the mine has been carried out since August; 1943; by A. W. Esty.Kidd has shown that, in the largely granitic country along the east side of Great Bear lake, the Echo Bay district is one of several underlain by older rocks . These he has divided into the Echo Bay and Cameron Bay groups. The former are strongly altered sediments, .porphyries, and lavas; the latter and younger group is predominantly sedimentary and far less altered. Associated with the granite, which everywhere intrudes the sediments and volcanics, are earlier differentiates. Later than all these rocks are various basic intrusives, collectively termed diabase. All the rocks are of Precambrian age."

A previous study comparing n-pentanol and the polyglycol Fl50 showed that the two reagents could give the same gas holdup but with different size bubbles. The finding implies that bubble rise velocity depends on the surfactant (frother) type. A study using bubble swarms supported the frother type effect but bubble interactions were a possible confounding factor. This study resolves the question by measuring the rise velocity of single bubbles of 0.8-2.5mm diameter over a distance :::: 300cm in n-pentanol and F 150. It is shown that at typical frother concentrations used in flotation that the rise velocity in n-pentanol remains comparable to that in water alone while in Fl50 the velocity is significantly reduced. The results confirm the suspected impact of frother type. It is illustrated that in n-pentanol the rise velocity does not reached terminal; while in Fl50 it does and this is the source of the velocity difference. Advances

In the processing of rare earth ores, a pure, mixed rare earth chloride solution is usually produced and used as the feed to solvent extraction circuits to separate the individual rare earths. Cerium(III) may be separated from the other rare earths by oxidising it to cerium(IV), which precipitates as cerium(IV) hydroxide in chloride liquors. This oxidation step may be inserted either before rare earth separation by solvent extraction or between solvent extraction circuits. Although oxidation of cerium by sodium hypochlorite has been known for many years, detailed conditions for oxidation are not readily available. "Barrick Gold is in the process of expanding one of its grinding circuits at the Goldstrike property as a response to both increasing ore hardness and increased ore sensitivity to finer grinding as it relates to gold recovery. The plant currently operates with two parallel grinding lines, each with a SAG mill, a pebble crusher, and a ball milling arrangement. As part of determining what additional equipment was to be required, a CEET evaluation program was conducted (CEET is an acronym for Comminution Economic Evaluation Tool). The work included: Development of a hardness ‘model’ for the ore body, as described by SAG Power Index and Bond Work Index;Site benchmarking surveys to fine tune the SAG and ball mill calibrations within CEET;Conducting CEET studies to examine the process options;Comparing CEET results to standard grinding circuit design techniques.The recommendation of the study, presently being implemented, is the installation of an additional ball mill on one of the two grinding lines. This paper reviews the sizing techniques applied, providing a CEET case study for circuit performance analysis and circuit design. OVERVIEW OF COMMINUTION AT GOLDSTRIKEOre feeding the autoclaves at Goldstrike are first processed through two parallel grinding lines. Both lines use SAG mills with cone crushing of pebbles followed by ball milling. A summary of the key circuit parameters is provided in Table 1. Line 1 primarily processes underground Meikle ore, although when no Meikle ore is available, it processes open pit Betze ore. Line 2 processes Betze ore exclusively. The Mill Line 1 P80 objective for Meikle ore is 74 microns. According to the recovery optimization analysis, a P80 of 90 microns was recommended for Betze ore. The potential however exists to perform co-mingling of both ore types and feed the higher grade Betze ore to Line 1, in which case the P80 of 74 microns would be retained."

"The influence of annealing of galvanized steel (galvannealing) on its corrosion kinetics in a saturated solution of Ca (OH)2 has been studied by means of the polarization resistance method.Galvannealing heat treatment was carried out at 450°C and 550°C for varying times. Annealing at 450°C for 24 hr or at 550°C for 5 hr showed the highest corrosion potential (Ecorr) ~= - 400 m V/ SCE as well as, the lowest corrosion current density (icorr ~= 3 mA.cm-2, while Ecorr and icorr of the unheated specimens were ~= - 1400m V/SCE and == 20 mA.cm-2, respectively.Polarization curves were also obtained for the as-received galvanized specimens together with the galvannealed ones.INTRODUCTIONHeat treatment of galvanized steel (i.e . galvannealing) is carried out at a temperature range of 450°C to 550°C for a time sufficient to convert the free zinc coating to an alloyed one consisting of layers of iron-zinc intermetallic compounds. Table I is a review of the properties of the Fe-Zn intermetallicphases while Figure I is a reproduction - of the Fe-Zn equilibrium phase diagram taken from Hansen.Several authors have studied the formation of intermetallic phases through the interdiffusion of Zn/Fe couples. Empirical and phenomenological models of SAG and AG mills have dominated the scene for the last few decades, being used nearly every time a mill is scale-up or an attempt is made to improve its performance. However, in spite of their success, these models fail to describe the details of both the grinding environment and the breakage mechanisms. The result is a generally good track record, with a few ? but very important ? instances when these models fall short in their predictions, which can be very costly. Further, nearly all of these models require detailed calibration to industrial and pilot plant data, being costly in their application, although still with limited predictive capabilities. Recognizing these challenges, a new model framework has been proposed which overcomes the limitations of currently used models by coupling the microscale population balance model, the discrete element model and functions that describe internal classification at the mill grate. This model framework has already been applied to describe breakage in ball mills, with showing very promising results. However, in the case of SAG and AG mills a much greater level of complexity is involved in the model, given the interaction between the mechanical environment that is formed totally or, in part, by the ore itself, and the breakage response in the mill. The paper describes the model framework, demonstrating how it can address appropriately effects such as mill speed, mill filling and size distribution, on the response from the mill. Some of the advantages of the model are related to its intrinsic multi-component and dynamic nature, which allows simulating appropriately mixtures of ores of different competences in a transient manner.

Three novel dextrin polymers of varying functional group chemistry but similar molecular weight have been used to depress talc in single and mixed mineral studies. The mixed mineral system was a model sulphide ore consisting of talc, pentlandite, and chalcopyrite. Adsorption isotherms for the three polymers on both valuable and gangue mineral phases were determined to give initial clues as to the ability of the polymers to depress talc. Flotation testing revealed a distinct hierarchy of effectiveness of the polymers in the depression of talc in the single mineral system (MP Dextrin > CM Dextrin > Dextrin TYM), reflecting the observed adsorption affinity and adsorbed amount of the polymers on talc. However, a different order of effectiveness was observed for talc depression in the mixed mineral system (CM Dextrin > MP Dextrin > Dextrin TYM). Competition between the valuable and gangue mineral phases for uptake of MP Dextrin is responsible for its observed decrease in efficiency in mixed mineral flotation. All three polymers were found to be reasonably selective in their action, although at high dosages the polymers began to affect the flotation of the valuable minerals.

A new method using a combination of comprehensive mineralogical and analytical approach which includes optical and electrical microscopy and several analytical techniques with diagnostic leaching has been used to characterize the associations and distribution of gold in a variety of minerals from the Zarshuran refractory gold ore, NW Iran. Zarshuran ore with an average of 7.9 g/t Au-grade and about 8% arsenic with gold recovery less than 20% in direct cyanidation is considered as high arsenic, high au-grade refractory gold ore. In most of the refractory ores, gold is associated with arsenopyrite and co-para genetic ore minerals, while in Zarshuran ore; gold is associated with orpiment, realgar and arsenian-pyrite. Considering its mineralogy and As content, it can be considered as the most difficult refractory ore for characterization and processing. Results from the mineralogical examination and diagnostic leaches indicate that there is only a small amount of free gold (17-19%) that is present in cyanide-soluble sulfo-arsenides compounds, predominantly orpiment and realgar. Diagnostic leaches also indicate that little gold is occluded within the silicate structure (14%). Overall, the gold is mostly included in sulfides, arsenic sulfides and sulfo-arsenides (50%). The results also have shown how the technique can be used to gain a good initial understanding of potential metallurgical problems for a refractory gold ore.

"THE HARDY MINE of Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited is located in Lot 9, Concession 1, Levack Township, Sudbury District, Ontario, 20 miles northwest of the city of Sudbury, and a mile west of the town of Levack. The ore deposit is one of the many nickel-copper sulphide bodies found on, or near, the lower contact of the well-known Sudbury norite-micropegmatite irruptive, and is one of a family of ore deposits which occur on the northwest rim of the irruptive.The property was acquired by purchase in 1935. In the same year a magnetometer survey along the footwall contact of the norite, which is covered by about 150 feet of glacial sands and clays, first indicated the location of the orebody. Drilling from 1935 to 1942 outlined the extent of the ore. Shaft sinking was commenced in the fall of 1951, and the mine is now approaching full production at a rate of about 300,000 tons per year.There are several major differences between the geology of the Levack area and the Falcon bridge area, which lies at the opposite extremity of the irruptive, 28 miles to the east. The purpose of this paper is to describe the essential features of the geology of the Levack area as seen in the Hardy mine, and to supplement the recent papers on other properties in the Sudbury area by Davidson (1), Lochhead (2), and Yates (3).General GeologyA recent review of the regional geology and an extensive bibliography of the Sudbury area can be found in the two papers by H. IT is the purpose of this essay to give a reasonably complete description of shaft sinking under a rock pentice in a small Northern Ontario gold property. Hallnor is in many ways an exceptional mine, but the sinking operations here described are but typical examples of the excellent practice for which Canadian mines and mining engineers are justly famous the world over. The worth of the subject lies, therefore, nor in its originality, but in its soundness; not in the spectacular, but in the economical and safe. Attention is particularly drawn to the excellent safety record and to the exceptionally low overall sinking cost. INTRODUCTION Prior to April, 1939, the Hallnor No. 1 shaft had been sunk vertically to a depth of 997 feet below the surface. It is a three-compartment shaft, 19 ft. 10 in. by 7ft. 7 in. outside the timbers (see Figure 1).

Electrodeposition of silicon from a cryolite based electrolyte at a relatively low temperature (1000°C) is a promising approach to generate high purity silicon. In order to obtain fundamental data pertaining to electrowinning of silicon from Cryolite?SiO2 melts, density and electrical conductivity measurements were made. A range of temperatures and SiO2 contents was studied for each property. It was found that while density has an inverse relationship with temperature, the dependence for electrical conductivity is direct. Increasing silica content up to the saturation limit (~ 5 wt%) increases the density whereas further increase in SiO2, lowers the melt density. On the other hand, the conductivity is lower for the melts with greater SiO2 content, at any temperature.

In recent years, with the emergence of Geometallurgy, a great effort has been made to characterize ore resources as early and accurately as possible, to allow better design and a more efficient operation of mineral processing circuits. In this context, core logging plays an important role, since drill cores provide the first insight into the ore characteristics. However, to satisfy geometallurgical requirements, traditional core logging does not suffice. New tools and methodologies need to be developed for the automation of core logging and the acquisition of mineralogical data better related to mineral processing performances. In this paper, a methodology for the geometallurgical characterization of drill cores is proposed, based on the drill core textural patterns. Textural pattern is defined here as the macroscopic spatial arrangement of minerals. The Mont-Wright iron ore deposit (Quebec, Canada) is used as a case study. The first part of this work aimed at analyzing the potential link between the iron ores textural patterns observed in drill cores and their response to ore processing, namely comminution and concentration. Preliminary results show similar performances in terms of energy consumption and heavy liquid separation for samples showing the same textural pattern. In the second part, this work seeks to develop a methodology for the automated identification of drill core textural patterns by the application of digital image analysis and discriminant function analysis. The results obtained show that this methodology is able to discriminate between the textural patterns identified at Mont-Wright with a good rate of success. Therefore, this work lays the foundation for the development of a new drill core characterization tool, which would allow for the early prediction of the iron ore behaviour during mineral processing through the identification of drill core textural patterns.

THE use of organic and inorganic stains has found wide application as a means of detection and estimation of organic fibres. Such stains have enabled the analyst to distinguish between organic fibres of different type and even between wood fibres produced by different processes. Among these stains, aqueous iodine solutions have figured prominently, as in the case of the well-known Sutermeister and Herzberg stains. At the Johns-Manville laboratories, the idea of applying a stain to asbestos fibres was first considered solely as a visual aid in the microscopic examination of such fibres. The staining medium used in this work consisted of a 1 per cent solution of iodine in C.P. glycerine, the latter being used extensively here as a dispersing and mounting liquid for asbestos fibre. This iodine solution was found to have distinct staining properties when used on the local chrysotile fibres, and to improve greatly their visibility under the microscope. It was soon revealed, however, that this staining is apparently limited to the chrysotile variety of asbestos, as against other varieties. It can be readily seen that, if such were the case, the staining test would become a very useful tool in differentiating between chrysotile fibre and the other mineral fibres, without recourse to a lengthy chemical analysis. Hence this investigation was launched, with the purpose of obtaining more information as to the selectivity of this stain as well as its mechanism. The only previous work of this nature that could be found in the literature was that of Van Winsen and Graham (1, 2, 3) on the adsorption of erioviolet dye by serpentine and related magnesia minerals. However, these authors did not refer to any specific behaviour of chrysotile as against other types of asbestos fibre.

"Stirred media mills have proved to be more energy-efficient than the conventional ball milling for fine grinding applications. The mill performance is governed by a number of operating variables including mill stirrer speed, feed particle size, solids content and slurry rheology. A study was conducted to assess effects of mill speed, media size and density, and slurry density on the Stress Intensity (SI) in a VXPmill and thereby the relationship to mill performance. For the mill speeds tested, it was found that the optimum tip speed is 7 m/s. If the speed is too high (12 m/s) energy losses result due to mechanical friction losses and heat generation. If the speed is too low (3 m/s), the kinetic energy is not sufficient to promote breakage. The size reduction ratio increases with the increase in mill speed and the decrease in solids content especially in the coarse fraction particle sizes. The effect of slurry rheology on mill performance was shown by assessing the effects of increasing solids concentration and decreasing particle size. Rheological effects seemed to interact with mill speed such that the mill was less energy-efficient at higher solids content and at higher mill speeds particularly for grinding to fine particle sizes. "Goldcorp is evaluating the potential for economic reprocessing of historic tailings at several sites, including the Aunor A facility located in Timmins. The overall project is investigating the ability to recover value, remove sulphide minerals and alternative tailings re-deposition strategies. Desulphurization of tailings will eliminate potential acid generation while improved tailings re-deposition could reduce long-term liabilities and closure costs. Through a task-share project between CanmetMINING and Goldcorp, tailings obtained from Aunor A site have been characterized using mineral association analysis and diagnostic separation techniques. The selected tailing samples contain about 2 g/t of gold. Mineralogical analysis has identified coarse agglomerates bound with gypsum and significant free gold, confirmed by high recoveries in cyanide leach tests. However, despite no evidence of surface passivation on the minerals, conventional flotation techniques were found to be ineffective in concentrating gold or sulphides due to the high fines content and highly agglomerated particles.INTRODUCTION Aunor Mine is one of the historic mines that belongs to Porcupine Gold Mines (PGM) in Timmins, Ontario. PGM has undertaken an extensive mine closure program to remediate the legacy and closed mines with the funding supported by operating mines since 2006. Over the course of 100 years of operation in the Porcupine camp, it is estimated (Stevens et al., 2013) that about 130 million tonnes of tailings have been generated. Aunor Mine produced 2.5 million troy ounces of gold between 1940 and 1984, while processing over 7.6 million tons of ore. The original gold grade of Aunor Mine ores was about 10 g/t. With 95% gold recovery at the time, an estimate of 0.5 g/t of gold remains in the Aunor Mine tailings. Aunor Mine has two tailings impoundment areas: designated as Aunor A and Aunor B. The two sites are similar in size, about 7 hectares each. The amount of tailings in the Aunor A site alone is about 3.2 million tonnes. In 2017, bulk tailings were sampled from five designated locations in Aunor A. They were characterized using mineral association analysis and diagnostic separation techniques. The bulk tailings samples contained about 10% total sulphur, 10% iron, 2% arsenic and 2 g/t of gold. The prime objective of this collaborative work between CanmetMINING and Goldcorp is to facilitate the timely development and deployment of innovative tailings reprocessing solutions, specifically in the areas of desulphurization, and recovery of metals. This work targeted specific tailings of interest to Goldcorp which goals are to improve its environmental footprint and to reduce long-term liability. Thus, it is imperative to look for innovative reprocessing options that can overcome not only technological challenges but also achieve economic benefits to offset the costs associated with reprocessing the tailings. Moreover, the greater goal is to demonstrate and deploy tailings reprocessing solutions to solve one of the industry’s most difficult challenges for a sustainable mining industry in Canada."

"Following several months of test work, water leaching in mined-out areas at Stanrock commenced on a production basis in February, 1963. A combination of fast high-pres-sure washing and rewashing of stopes on a predetermined cycle, and the intermittent sprinkling of low-grade heaps, using both fresh water and recirculated acid water, has proved most successful. There was also a correlation of daily sampling data points to a relationship between the leach water grade and the grade of the material being washed, the leaching time and the location along the dip. An increasing tolerance for uranium by the acid-producing bacteria is also indicated. A steady production rate of 10,000 to 12,000 lbs. of u.08 per month is being maintained, with an over-all mine water grade of 0.25 lb. per ton and a pH of 2.3."

To produce high quality castings, one must monitor the melt quality by evaluating such parameters as the grain refinement and silicon inoculation and modification during the production of the commercial casting. Thermal analysis is a tool one can use for both monitoring and providing input to the process control of the operation. The current technique of performing thermal analysis in commercial foundries is to pour a relatively small quantity of the molten aluminum alloy into a sampling cup and to then acquire the cooling curve. This approach is somewhat simplistic in that one has limited control of the cooling rate and hence the solidification rate of the sample. Moreover, this process requires a fair amount of user intervention and effort. In the past, studies have been conducted in an attempt to develop a system for conducting thermal analysis in-situ. In a study at McGill University, an alkali based heat pipe system was developed for conducting thermal analysis in-situ. While the concept was deemed as very desirable, the complexity of the equipment and procedure was a substantial negative component. In order to improve the technique of accomplishing real-time thermal analysis with an in-situ probe, a new method that is based on McGill heat pipe technology was developed. In the new system, a controllable and flexible water based heat pipe probe is used to solidify a small quantity of metal while residing in the melt. The solidified aluminum is remelted after completing the thermal analysis. This is a key feature of the probe. It resides permanently in the melt yet it is able to both solidify a sample of the melt and then to subsequently remelt it. Various solidification rates encountered in commercial castings are attainable by adjusting the heat extraction rate of the unit.

Introduction The position of Turner Valley in the foothills of Alberta, some thirty-five miles southwest of Calgary, is too well known to need further description. This attempt to interpret in detail the nature of the structure, and its relationship to neighbouring structures, together with general observations on the foothills belt, is based on work carried out in the office of the Supervisory Mining Engineer, at Calgary. The object in view was the correlation of the mass of evidence which had accumulated from the detailed examination of drill cuttings, and to discover, if possible, its structural significance. Unfortunately it is not possible to publish most of this detail owing to its confidential nature, and in consequence the reader is asked to accept certain statements, which under other circumstances would not be made without supporting evidence. The main argument for the general structural interpretation rests on evidence which has already been made public, and it is possible to proceed to logical conclusions on the main points. The evolution of ideas concerning the structure of Turner Valley is somewhat difficult to follow, as, compared with all that has been said on the subject, there is not a great deal on record.
