A general expression for the electric power generated or consumed in a direct-current circuit is obtained by multiplying the reading of a suitable voltmeter connected across the terminals by the reading of an ammeter connected in the circuit. by the reading of an ammeter connected in the circuit. When alternating currents are considered, the product of the volts and amperes as obtained for direct currents does not generally represent the true energy involved; it is greater than this true energy and should be multiplied by a certain factor which may have any value between zero and unity, according to the conditions of the circuit. This factor is called the power-factor of the system, and expresses the ratio of the true energy over the apparent energy. For a three-phase system the expression of the apparent energy is [\/ 3 x E x I; ] while the expression of the true energy, that is, energy suitable for mechanical work, is [v? 3 x E x I x cos A.] The total current of a circuit corresponds to the reading of an ammeter connected in the circuit; it is the resultant of two currents. The first of these is in phase with the voltage, and is that portion which really produces mechanical work; the second is always in quadrature with the voltage, that is it may lead or lag the voltage by 90° according to the condition of the circuit. This second current does not produce any sensible work, and for this reason is sometimes called wattless current or reactive current.

Liquid-solid separation and slurry handleability relate directly to commercial plant ramp-up success or lack thereof. The paper provides a well-proven approach for testing, scale-up and commercial application of difficult processes. Emphasis is placed on practical applications of rheological concepts developed both academically and empirically. The cause-effect relationship between the process chemistry and possible physical implications on the metallurgical plant operability is presented in a simple, direct form. Examples include recent results in areas of mineral processing and extractive metallurgy. Technical process risk factors and their mitigation are included in the discussion.

When producing high grade mattes in smelter plants, copper losses in the slag are inevitable. Hence, the recovery of copper from slag has been the focus of many research projects, copper flotation being a widely used process. In the Khatoonabad converter, 200 t/d of slag are presently produced with a grade of 2.3% Cu. Assuming a 85% recovery by flotation, about 3.9 t/d copper could be produced, which is of prime importance economically. In the present work, a sample of this slag was crushed and ground in the laboratory to liberate the copper-bearing minerals. Following mineralogical studies, optimum laboratory flotation parameters were obtained, resulting in 90.27 % recovery and 9.42% of copper grade for the rougher stage. At pilot scale, a pulp of 28% solids was floated at ph 10.5 using 40 git of Z6, 25 git of R407 and 20 git of MIBC and A65. A recovery of 83.52% was obtained for a concentrate grade of 28.36% Cu. In the rougher cells, the feed consisted of particles 94% finer than 74 microns whereas in the cleaning stage, particles were 95% finer than 44 microns. Based on the obtained results, the Sarcheshmeh Khatoonabad converter slag is presently being fed to the Chargonbad flotation plant, where a concentrate of 32% copper at 86% recovery is being produced.

"Hydrocyclones are used in various industrial applications, including mineral processing and tailings management, to separate or classify solid particles and/or liquid droplets from multiphase feed. The fluid flow in a hydrocyclone (used in mineral processing) was investigated numerically and experimentally using particle-image velocimetry (PIV) and refractive index matching techniques. Two turbulence models were used in the calculations: the k–? model and the Reynolds stress model. Particle image velocimetry measurements were taken at various spatial locations along the cyclone. Computational results were validated globally using pressure and flow-rate readings at the boundaries, and locally by comparing the PIV velocity-vector maps and profiles.RÉSUMÉ On utilise les hydrocyclones dans diverses applications industrielles, dont la minéralurgie et la gestion des résidus, pour séparer les particules solides et/ou les gouttelettes liquides de l’alimentation polyphasée, ou pour les classifier. Une étude numérique et expérimentale sur l’écoulement des fluides dans un hydrocyclone (dont on se sert en minéralurgie) a été menée à l’aide des techniques de vélocimétrie par images de particules (PIV, de l’anglais particle image velocimetry) et d’appariement des indices de réfraction. Deux modèles de turbulence ont été utilisés dans ces calculs, à savoir le modèle de turbulence k–? et le modèle aux tensions de Reynolds (RSM, de l’anglais Reynolds stress model). La valeur de la PIV a été mesurée à diverses positions spatiales le long du cyclone. At the present time of depletion of reserves of high grade rare earth deposits, it has become necessary to involve low grade raw materials in the production. Among the rare-earth deposits in Kazakhstan, the most advanced one is Kundybai. The mineralogical composition of ore is represented by the minerals: a-quartz SiO2, kaolinite Al2(Si2O5)(OH)4, muscovite KAl2(AlSi3)O10(OH, F)2, albite Na(AlSi3O8), rutile TiO2, and hematite Fe2O3. It contains: 59.1–68.5% SiO2, 19.1–28.4% Al2O3, 7.2–10.3% Fe2O3, 0.51–0.84% TiO2, 0.10–2.32% CaO, 0.39–2.10% MgO, and some other elements. Rare earths are located in the clay part (kaolinite, goethite) in the ion-adsorbing form, and they are represented by the main ore mineral churchite - YPO4·2H2O. In the ore the amount of rare-earth elements (total REEs) varies from 210 to 600 ppm. Elements of the cerium group predominate (La, Nd, Ce, Sm, Pr) and the yttrium group is represented by Y, Gd and Dy. Extremely thin intergrowth and accumulation of REEs in clay minerals cause difficulties in their recovery using flotation and gravitation beneficiating methods. The purpose of this work is the development of an extraction method for the main mineral components of ore with transfer of the total REEs into the solution with high extractive efficiency. Results of the experimental work into high-temperature processing (hereinafter referred to as sulphatization) of ore by sulphuric acid with subsequent dual-mode water leaching of the sulphate product (sinter) are presented in this manuscript. The influence on the ore sulphatization process of some physical and chemical parameters: liquid-to-solid (L/S) ratio (0.36–0.86 cm3/g), temperature (100 – 500°?), concentration of sulphuric acid (3.0–18.62 mol/L) and duration (0.5–2.5 h) was studied. Optimal technological parameters of the process were determined to be: L/S ratio 0.36–0.46 cm3/g; temperature 500°?; concentration of H2SO4 9.0 mol/L; soaking time 1.5 h. Under these conditions it is possible to obtain extractions of ~ 85% REE, as well as 58% aluminium and 10% iron. XRD and IR-spectroscopy analyses were used to determine the material constitution of sulphated cakes obtained under optimal conditions. It was found that the primary minerals are quartz and muscovite; however different sodium aluminium silicates and albite minerals are present as well. In the future, it is proposed that the leach residue cakes are processed into precipitated silica (“white soot”).

Likely materials requirements for the nuclear industry over the next twenty five years will also be discussed.

Inter formational sliding of bedding planes between two different rock types in Badong formation is an important reason that leads to the instability and fracture of rock mass in this stratum. There are no specific research achievements on bedding planes between two different rock types in Badong formation. In order to study the shear mechanical properties of bedding planes between two different rock types. This paper using the software of particle flow code (PFC) and JRC model to establish several typical structures of different roughness coefficient of surface morphology based on the laboratory tests on silty mudstone and marlite in Badong formation. A great deal of numerical shear tests were carried out by ball production, radius expansion and servo infliction. The research results are as follows: First, shear strength of Badong formation is found to vary between that of silty mudstone and marlite isotropic planes by analyzing shear strength of the homogenous bedding planes and inhomogeneous rock types, we can find that the shearing strength in Badong formation is between silty mudstone and marlite isotropic planes and which is closer to the shearing strength of silty mudstone isotropic planes. Second, the basical friction angle of bedding planes between two different rock types in Badong formation is between silty mudstone and marlite isotropic planes and which is closer to the basical friction angle of silty mudstone between isotropic planes. Third, based on the experimental results, an expression is obtained to describe the relationship of the ratio of shearing strength between bedding planes of two different rock types and isotropic planes in soft rock, the rock combination coefficient, and the roughness coefficient. This study has important significance for further research on the shear mechanical properties of bedding planes between two different rock types.

"There are two accomplishments of air and gas drilling: a new series of economic and mechanical challenges; and, acceptance as a standard drilling and completion tool.The new challenges are related to the concept of using a gaseous circulating medium in drilling for oil or gas. For purposes of discussion, a two part division has been made: the challenge of fluid invasion control and that of equipment and tools. Great strides have been made in the development of materials and techniques to combat formation fluid invasion. Chemicals and the ""mist drilling"" technique, now in use, have the versatility to cope with a wide range of downhole fluid entry conditions.Equipment and tools have been developed to meet the challenges of better, more economic drilling and completion possible with a gaseous circulating fluid. Economic and operational challenges remain.Acceptance of air and gas drilling as a normal operating tool was reached with difficulty. It is now established as a means of reducing costs in exploratory and develop-mental well drilling, exemplified in a recent study of 226 wells covering 419,407 feet of hole in the United States. Air reached the projected depth in 85 per cent of the operations, although formation water was encountered in 48.7 per cent of the holes. Slim hole bit performance and cost all compared for overall bit averages as part of analysis."

Laboratory tests were performed to explore the effects of frequency on the deformation property of rock salt subjected to cyclic loading under confining stress condition. A two-stage (transient and steady) evolution law of axial cumulative strain was obtained through cyclic stress-strain curves complied from the loci of minimum load of each cycle. The unloading modulus decreases with loading cycles/time as a negative exponential function. The damage of rock salt under cyclic loading is reflected by the degradation of elastic modulus. A unified damage evolution equation considering the effects of frequency and time was established based on the experimental results. A new creep damage model for rock salt was proposed by introducing the non-stationary modular components in Burgers creep equation according to the Lemaitre equivalent strain theory. Comparative study indicates that the new model can accurately describe the creep deformation and damage evolution of rock salt under different loading frequencies. This paper provides a more reasonable model and relevant mechanical parameters for the stability analysis of compressed-air storage cavern in the injection and withdrawal durations.

At then end of this year will be 10 years of producing concentrate for Antamina. This is a summary of what occurred over the last decade to increase production and tonnage above the design tonnage of 70,000 tonnes per day, up to an average of 100,018 tonnes per day in 2010, an increase in production of 42.9%. Equipment currently in use is the originally installed equipment, signifying a meaningful increase in capacity without capital. In this paper, the different phases of improvements and the realization of their impacts in chronological order will be outlined. Figure 1 below shows the average daily tonnage processed each year (tonnage throughput each year/calendar days), as well as the percentage increase over the tonnage of design.

"Carryover of caustic soda (NaOH) in the steam path caused catastrophic failure of superheater 304H stainless steel tubes in a steam generator and led to an unexpected shutdown after just five months of continuous service of petrochemical following the start of production. The cause of the failure was studied, with a focus on the formation of sigma phase in the weld joint and effect of caustic embrittlement on stress corrosion cracking (SCC). The cracks were examined at the seam weld, heat affected zone (HAZ), and Ubend areas. Hardness was measured for the base metal, HAZ, and weld metal, and microstructures were examined using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Crack initiation is attributed to gouging on the precipitated carbide at the HAZ and also the formation of sigma phase in the weld metal, as shown by energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. In addition, cracking was propagated by caustic embrittlement because of residual stresses and hammering. Finally, the characteristic feature of fracture was illustrated by SEM fractography, and consists mostly of intergranular SCC and some quasicleavage transgranular. INTRODUCTIONThree key factors are needed for the initiation and propagation of intergranular stress corrosion cracking (IGSCC): a susceptible material, a corrosive environment, and sufficient stress. Although austenitic stainless steels are susceptible to sensitization and IGSCC, they are widely used in boiler and superheater tubes because of their high corrosion resistance, high oxidation resistance, acceptable mechanical characteristics at elevated temperatures, and low cost.Sodium hydroxide is injected to neutralize acidic constituents in the steam path, but caustic can concentrate in boiler tubes and attack the surface metal (known as gouging) even traces of caustic in the steam can deposit on surfaces and cause local concentrations of several percent (ASM handbook, 1992). Not only sensitized grains but also sigma phase formed in the weld metal can initiate caustic cracking. In this research, the cause of the failure of 304H stainless steel superheater tubes in a methanol petrochemical plant in Iran was studied with a focus on the effects of caustic embrittlement on IGSCC."

"Precipitation of gypsum and the formation of scale may pose a serious challenge in the leaching of several minerals. As an example, precipitated gypsum may form scale in the machines increasing the need for maintenance. Alternatively, it may encapsulate precious elements, i.e. gold and lower the recovery during subsequent leach processes. In this work we explore how different biopolymers modify the rheology of gypsum at three different pH levels at ambient and elevated temperatures. The ability to disperse gypsum vary with temperature, pH and biopolymer. It is also inversely related to the scaling potential. Measurements of the zeta potential as a function of increasing amounts of biopolymer reveals that the magnitude of the zeta potential changes in the presence of biopolymer, and so does the ability to disperse the gypsum suspension. Similar results with hematite will also be discussed. The methodology and results may aid in the selection of additives used in mineral processing applications where scale pose a problem.INTRODUCTION Processing of refractory gold ores normally involve either atmospheric or oxidation under pressure in order to convert sulfides to oxides (Weir, King, & Robinson, 1986; Weir, Robinson, & King, 1986). This conversion facilitates leaching of gold (and silver) in normal CIL processes. During oxidation, sulfides are converted to sulfates. Normally, there is an abundance of calcium ions in the process water, either released from the ore or added as lime to adjust pH for the CIL process. Precipitation of calcium sulfate, or other compounds (calcium carbonate, jarosite, hematite) is a way to remove gangue minerals from the solution entering the CIL circuit (Ji, King, Fleming, & Ferron, 2010). Precipitation may also cause challenges in the process as gold (or other valuable elements) may become encapsulated in gangue. (Beauchamp, Choung, & Xu, 2006). In addition to precipitation, the precipitated gangue minerals may solidify and form scale in the processing equipment. Recently, Lauten and Kluck (2016) found that dispersants used as scale inhibitors to prevent encapsulation of gypsum did not modify the solubility of gypsum. In the utilised model system, similar amounts of gypsum precipitated with and without dispersants. Instead, it was found that the dispersants evaluated as scale inhibitors reduced the yield stress of gypsum suspensions. The reduced yield stress was associated with a reduced tendency for gypsum particles to agglomerate and form scale."

In order to produce a more saleable product and to improve operating and maintenance conditions, it is necessary to depress the water table below the mining level. Considerable success has been achieved by drilling deep wells in strategic locations and installing vertical tur-bine pumps at depths of up to 400 feet. As part of Inco's $115 million Fluid Bed Roaster SO2 Abatement Project, a new weak acid treatment plant (WATP) was constructed to treat bleed solutions from the Copper Cliff Smelting Complex gas-cleaning circuits. The WATP produces an iron-arsenic co-precipitate, termed "basic ferric arsenate" (BFA), which requires disposal in an environmentally acceptable manner. Following analysis of many potential options, the short-listed disposal alternatives were: A) Co-disposal of the BFA?gypsum sludge with rock tailings, a portion of which would be used in mine backfill, with the remainder being sent to the tailings area, and B) Co-disposal of BFA?gypsum sludge with pyrrhotite tailings in the tailings area. Testwork showed that the addition of BFA?gypsum sludge to mine backfill samples increased the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of the backfill for most samples, especially those at lower binder content ratios. Extensive analysis was conducted on samples taken from the Copper Cliff tailings area, where BFA?gypsum sludge from Inco's Copper Refining Electrowinning Department has been co-deposited with pyrrhotite tailings since 1990. Pore water samples from these areas contained very low arsenic concentrations, indicating that the arsenic had remained stable in that environment. Ultimately, co-deposition with pyrrhotite tailings was chosen as the preferred option for the disposal of BFA?gypsum sludge from Inco's new WATP.

"IntroductionTHE OPINION is held by many persons outside the mining industry, and by some within it, that mine •operators customarily find it advantageous to mine •only the richer parts of orebodies and to leave behind, perhaps permanently, leaner material which could be mined only at a lesser profit. This opinion and the inference which might be drawn from it that 'gutting' of mineral resources is a common feruture• of the mining industry are prejudicial to the intertsts of the industry and deserve careful scrutiny. Oddly enough, a theory of mine economics which gives much support for the opinion was advanced first by members of the mining profession itself, has been repeated •several times in mining literature, and to my knowledge has never been adequately refoted.According to the theory, selective mining of the rich ore first on a large scale will yield substantial gains and these gains do not merely reflect the desire of 'money minded investors' for a quick return but derive from the logical application of compound interest rates and the concept of ;present value. W. O. Hotchkiss and R. D. Parks (1) illustrate the reasoning with a hypothetical example in which an orebody of 4,000,000 tons may be mined either in its entirety in forty years at $1.00 per ton profit or selectively with the recovery of only the richest half in twenty years at $1.50 per ton profit. They show that, with Hoskold rates of 4 and 8 per cent, the present value of profits from mining only the richer 2,000,000 tons exceeds the present value of profits :from mining the whole orebody by about 20 per cent."

"Regenerative and recuperative burner systems require advanced combustion techniques to minimize NOx emissions. Various methods of pollutant minimization and furnace design considerations are described. Cited examples are a large high temperature furnace and a small Zinc vaporizing furnace. The concept of total carbon footprint is introduced. The application of Biomass combustion as an effective method of cost and green-house gas (GHG) reduction is discussed. Practical considerations of scale, location and process limitations are discussed. Two examples of biomass fired equipment are cited. Ideal sites have large biomass resources available locally. Processed biomass fuels will be an important substitute for fossil fuel. INTRODUCTIONIn 1992, I presented a paper entitled Combustion Strategies In The Modern Industrial Environment (1992). At that time an abundant supply of cheap fossil fuel made many of the measures I talked about difficult to justify for anything but new equipment.Since 1992 we, as a society, have demonstrated an ability to accelerate the pace of industrial and societal change. The term industrial revolution applied to this age of incessant change is completely meaningless, implying a discrete moment in historical time. What our society has built is a system capable of unfettered, continuous and accelerating technological change. With this change comes an increasing demand for energy and materials.This year is the anniversary of the Titanic disaster, a moment in time when technological certainty met the caprice of nature and gave us a brutal reminder of what can happen to us if we underestimate that power (Mowbray, 1912). In the intervening interval we have regained the technological arrogance that was lost in 1912 bringing us back to the problems of climate change and the need for sustainable industrial activities.We use advanced mathematics to describe many complex systems, sometimes with disastrous results. For example there has been a recent attempt to model the global economy as a completely deterministic system. This premise is flawed at its foundation as human nature and emotion are indeterminate constants in the equations, yielding probabilistic solutions at best. As engineers we are all familiar with stiff problems. The solution to such a problem is meaningless and we have all had the misfortune to live through and rue the effects of that miscalculation over the last few years."

"Abstract -The zone of economic interest at H.J . Joel Gold Mine is the VS5/Beatrix Composite Reef, a quartz-pebble conglomerate of Archean age. The reef occurs at the base of the Eldorado Formation, Central Rand Group, of the Witwatersrand Supergroup. At !east three stratigraphically distinct conglomerates form this economic zone. In order of deposition these are the Footwall, Beatrix, and the VS5/Beatrix reefs. The Footwall and Beatrix reefs are equated with the Aandenk Formation with transport directions toward the northwest, whereas the VS5/Beatrix Reef is of Eldorado age, with transport directions toward the south. The change in the drainage direction was caused by a major basin-wide tectonic event that occurred prior to the deposition of the Eldorado Formation. The Beatrix Reef was formed in a proximal, braided, fluvial environment by a process of aggrading gravel bars between channelways. The VS5/Beatrix Reef was formed by the desegregation of pre-existing Beatrix Reef with the introduction of new material containing much shale detritus and is seen to have been deposited in a more ·distal, braided, fluvial environment, similar to the Beatrix Reef.The average gold concentrations are different for each conglomerate; the Beatrix at 32.1 ppm Au, the Footwall at 24.4 ppm Au, and the VS5/Beatrix at only 12.4 ppm Au. A sedimentary gold concentrating process related to higher energy braid channels was primarily responsible for these high gold grades. Not only the basal unconformity surface, but also, internal degredation surfaces, were prime sites for concentration. An understanding of the spatial distribution of these differing conglomerates and their braid channels forming the economic reef zone is necessary in predicting ore grades for future mining."

The trend in mining thermal coal is only to mine coal with the lowest sulphur content. In many coal seams, bands of coal with high sulphur content are often present, generally occurring either at the roof or floor level. Methods of selective mining are, therefore, necessary to recover only the low sulphur coal. This paper examines the methods currently in use in mines and the alternative methods that are able or have potential to offer control of shearers and continuous miners where greater thicknesses of coal have to be left in the roof and floor. These alternative methods rely on such characteristics as neutron gamma radiation; electromagnetic waves; vibration; infrared; infrared; optical; pick force; X-ray fluorescence; conductivity; gyroscopes and laser systems.

L'association entre la minéralisation, la distribution de la réflectance de la MO et des AMA suggère que ces traceurs peuvent servir à l'exploration des sulfures de métaux de base dans cette région.A l'emplacement du gîte, la réflectance varie considérablement (0,80% à 1,88%), pouvant même afficher une baisse avec l'enfouissement, ce qui est interprété comme une altération chimique de la MO. Les valeurs les plus élevées s'accompagnent localement de quelques textures en mosaïque et délimitent une anomalie thermique au centre sud de la région. Parmi les minéraux des argiles identifiés, l'illite et la chlorite sont terrigènes alors que la smectite, la kaolinite et la corrensite sont authigènes et, à l'instar de l'altération de la MO, résultent des nouveaux équilibres chimiques créés suite à la précipitation des sulfures.Abstract- The Gays River Pb-Zn ore deposit is associated with anomalies defined from the characters of the organic matter (OM) and from the clay minerals assemblages. The relationships be­ tween these anomalies and the mineralization at the mine suggest that these parameters can be used as new guides for the exploration for base-metal sulfides in this area.The vitrinite reflectance (RJ shows a wide range of values (0.8% to 1.88%) and exhibits an anomalous suppressive effect with depth of burial at the mine site, suggesting a chemical alteration of the OM. The highest R, values are associated with mosaic textures and outline a thermal anomaly at the south-center of the studied area. Among the identified clay minerals, illite and chlorite are terrigenous, whereas smectite, kaolinite and corrensite are authigenous and, like the alteration of the OM, are due to the new chemical equilibria resulting from the precipitation of the sulfides."
