THE Ontario Research Foundation has developed a family of dry magnetic concentrators which, when used in conjunction with a dry grinding mill such as an Aero-fall mill, will allow the production of a completely dry magnetite concentrate. Previous experience with extrusion of iron ore and with pelletizing of fine iron concentrates suggested that it might be possible to develop a method particularly suited to the agglomeration of completely dry concentrates which might have some practical advantages over other methods of agglomeration. Pelletizing is the preferred method of agglomerating very fine iron ore concentrates. Magnetite concentrate is fod to the pelletizing equipment in the form of a moist filter cake. Binders and plasticizers may be added if necessary, and the moisture content must be increased or adjusted to the percentage necessary to give good balling action and satisfactory green strength in the resulting moist pellets. The moist ore with a closely controlled water content of about 7 to 12 per cent moisture may be rolled into pellets by a snow-balling action in a pelletizing drum, a Lurgi pan, or a Mac-Dowell disc pelletizer. The resulting green pellets are fired by one of several alternative processes to produce a hard pellet which has sufficient strength to withstand handling and shipping.

The purpose of an undercut is to undermine a block of ore which will then proceed to cave into draw holes just below the undercut. Undercut-ting is the final and most vital phase in the development of an ore block. Since its purpose is to undermine and induce caving into a block of ore, great care must be exercised to avoid premature caving by removing only enough rock to permit undercut development to proceed. Several undercutting methods, used over a twenty-year period, are re-viewed and their suitability is com-pared with ideal requirements.

THE copper-nickel sulfide ore deposits of the International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited contain the minerals pyrrhotite, pentlandite, and chalcopyrite. In the extraction of the nickel, copper, and iron, much of the processing involves oxidation of the metals as well as sulfur. Roasting plays a predominant role at several stages in the operations which prepare the constituent metals for refining. Copper, nickel and iron concentrates of various grades, ranging from low-grade nickeliferous pyrrhotite to high-grade nickel sulfide, must be partially or completely oxidized. Figure 1 shows the main points at which roasting is conducted at INCO. Roasting experience at INCO dates back to the time when lump ore was partially roasted in heaps. It has progressed through single hearth roasters, sinter machines, multiple-hearth roasters, flash roasters, and more recently has centered on the development and utilization of fluid bed roasters. Introduction The manufacture of ductile beryllium is one of the most interesting problems confronting the metallurgist today, and one which becomes more acutely in need of resolution as the uses for beryllium increase. Beryllium belongs to the hexagonal group of metals along with zinc, magnesium, and cadmium. The melting point of the metal is about l,280°C. ± 5°C. Due to its brittleness, the metal's chief use is as an alloying agent in copper and iron. The very low absorption coefficient of beryllium for x-rays makes the metal ideal for x-ray windows, and, similarly, because of its low capture cross-section for neutrons, the metal holds a preferred position in the field of nuclear physics. Modern x-ray diffraction methods were responsible for explaining the mechanism whereby zinc metal, although brittle when cast, could be made ductile at room temperature. The diffraction patterns of zinc and magnesium indicated the importance of the parts played by recrystallization and preferred orientation in this mechanism. It was with this in mind that an Investigation into the recrystallization and preferred orientation of beryllium was undertaken. The investigation, after a series of experiments were conducted involving cold-working and annealing, yielded the recrystallization temperature curve for beryllium. Both the texture of preferred orientation and the effect of recrystallization on this texture when subjected to compressive stresses were also determined. W. A. Alexander, J. K. Swinton and L. M. Pidgeon, in their investigation on The Recrystallization Temperature of Beryllium (C.I.M., Trans., Vol. L, 1947, pp. 657-664), utilized the Brinell ball as a means of cold straining the metal. Sufficient strain was developed to estimate the recrystallization curve for the metal. However, in order to determine the lowest recrystallization curve, as well as to develop a preferred orientation structure, larger deformation than that possible with a Brinell ball was required. The plastic deformation of beryllium can be carried out at an elevated temperature above 700°C. Above 850°C., the metal is quite ductile and can be readily compressed or extruded.

In New Brunswick, during the 1970's, rocks of the Lower Carboniferous Windsor Group in the Moncton Basin of the Fundy Epieugeosyncline have been the target of intense exploration and drilling programs. Sylvinite ore was discovered in three structural basins of the Moncton Basin near Sussex through a drilling program sponsored jointly by the Federal Department of Regional Economic Expansion and the New Brunswick Department of Natural Resources. In 1973, exploration and development rights to the western end of the Moncton Basin were awarded to the Potash Company of America. One high-grade sylvinite unit, varying between 15 and 70feet in true thickness, with a strike length in excess of 5 miles, is located near the stratigraphic top of the assymetric, semi-diapiric, locally overturned anticline. Late in 1975, exploration and development rights to the Marchbank Syncline were awarded to International Minerals and Chemical Corporation (Canada) Limited. To date, a stratigraphic evaporite sequence, forming the semi-diapiric core of the syncline, has been shown to contain one major high-grade sylvinite unit averaging 70 feet in true thickness over a strike length in excess of 2 miles. Both properties appear to have potential considerably in excess of that revealed by the exploratory drilling, and both, because of numerous mineralogical, structural and stratigraphic similarities, are thought to be depositionally contemporaneous. Both potash deposits lie within 50 miles of the Saint John all-weather deepwater port, thus affording easy access to eastern and mid-western U.S. markets. Further opportunities for potash exploration in New Brunswick are considered excellent, as there are large untested areas with favourable geology and known potassium water anomalies and negative gravity anomalies occurring in the Moncton and Cumberland basins, and in the Central Basin of New Brunswick.

"Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) based positioning and navigation systems have been recently developed and implemented by AQUILA Mining Systems Ltd. on blast hole drills and electric cable shovels in Canadian open pit coal and iron ore mines. These systems enable the location of the drill bit or the shovel tracks to be accurately determined in three dimensions. The position of the drill or shovel is displayed to the operator via a real-time, Moving Map Display (MMD) on an LCD-VGA screen. The MMD allows the operator to accurately navigate the drill from blast hole to blast hole or maintain a desired shovel grade or face position, with respect to displayed bench features. The maps for the MMD are downloaded from the mine office via laptop or radio link as required or as mining plans change.To obtain reliable, accurate and real-time3D positions of mobile mining equipment, proven GPS technology has to be utilized. The GPS components need to operate reliably under the severe environmental conditions that exist on board mobile mining equipment. In addition, they have to contend with varying pit geometry’s and satellite configurations, with little or no performance degradation. These issues were initially examined in December1993 during a feasibility project between AQUILA and Gregg River Resources Ltd., in relation to implementing GPS systems on blast-hole drills.To achieve certain design objectives, AQUILA Mining Systems Ltd. has developed navigation systems for cable shovels and blast-hole drills based around off-the-shelf, high precision GPS components. These systems utilize the AQUILA Advanced Monitoring Platform (AMP), to display graphically, via the MMD, shovel grade and drill position to the operator to within ±12 inches of design coordinates. Production prototypes have been installed on a Marion 301 cable shovel and a Bucyrus-Erie49-R Series III drill at the Fording River Mine in August, 1995, at the Wabush Mine on a Bucyrus Erie 190-B shovel in June, 1995, and on a GD120 drill at Gregg River Resources Ltd. in January, 1996. All these systems have undergone field trials to test system components and functionality’s under actual production conditions. This paper will discuss these GPS-based positioning and navigation systems in subsequent sections."

"Abstract - Alkali-alumina and MgO-alumina plots are an effective instrument for displaying chemical and mineralogical compositions of altered and unaltered rhyolites and rhyodacites. They reveal that most supposedly unaltered rhyolites, apart from those of Cenozoic age, have undergone losses in Na2O and gains in K2O. The extreme loss of Na2O from highly altered rhyolites immediately adjacent to VMS deposits is strikingly illustrated by alkali-alumina plots. MgO/Al2O3 vs. K2O/Al2O3 diagrams display a strong negative correlation between MgO and K2O that results from the conversion of sericite to chlorite. A similar negative correlation between MgO and whole-rock d18O is apparent on plots of these two parameters. Alkali-alumina plots underscore problems in selecting appropriate precursor compositions required for mass-balance calculations. Molar ratio plots are a viable alternative to such calculations. Sommaire -Les diagrammes alcali-alumine et MgO-alumine constituent un instrument efficace pour la représentation des compositions chimiques et minéralogiques des rhyolites et rhyodacites altérées et fraîches.Ces diagrammes révèlent qu’à l'exception de celles d’âge Cénozoïque, la plupart des rhyolites qualifiées de fraîches ont subi une perte de Na2O et un gain de K2O. L’intense perte en Na2O que l’on note dans les rhyolites fortement altérées associées aux gîtes de type SMV est particulièrement bien mise en évidence par le diagramme alcali-alumine. Le diagramme MgO/Al2O3 vs. K2O/Al2O3 montre une forte corrélation inverse entre le MgO et le K2O due à la conversion de la séricite en chlorite. Une corrélation inverse analogue entre le MgO et le d18O de la roche totale s’observe sur un graphe comparant ces deux paramètres. L’usage du diagramme alcali-alumine fait ressortir combien il peut être difficile de choisir un précurseur de composition appropriée pour des calculs de balance de masse. Introduction The West Canadian Collieries, Limited, operate three bituminous coal mines in the Crowsnest Pass district of Alberta. Two seams are worked; their thickness varies from 10 to 20 feet and their pitch from 10 to 45 degrees. The Bellevue mine was opened in 1903, the Greenhill in 1914; both are gassy and dusty, and at both the haulage is a problem, as the workings are spread over distances of several miles. Compressed-air locomotives are used at Bellevue, rope-haulage at Greenhill, both of which solutions of the haulage problem are costly in installation an operation, and lack flexibility. In 1943, the Adanac mine was opened; and the question soon arose as to which system of haulage should be selected. Compressed-air locomotives and ropes were rejected on the ground of high cost. Since, under the Alberta Mines Act, the use of trolley locomotives underground in coal-seams is not permitted, the choice lay between storage battery locomotives and Diesel locomotives. The preference of the author, who had had experience with both in French gassy coal mines prior to 1930, was for Diesel locomotives, due to lower cost of installation and greater flexibility and reliability. However, Regulation No. 13 of the Mines Act of Alberta reads: 'No gasoline-driven engines shall be used underground in any mine, and no internal combustion engine shall be used underground in any coal mine, except only when authorized by the Chief Inspector in writing, and on such terms as he may prescribe"

"The outlook for Eastern Canada is decreased coal production and for Western Canada increased production. The market for Western coal is expected to reach 40 million tons per year in metallurgical and thermal-power markets.Technical developments in Eastern Canada include successful methane drainage experiments, modifications to the shearer-loader to improve cutting rates, mechanized mining of a tail-gate stable and mechanical stowage of level brushing. In Western Canada, the most modern equipment is used in mining, beneficiating and shipping coal. Underground hydraulic experiments were started in 1969. The importance of reclamation was recognized and plans have been made to re-vegetate disturbed areas and mine dumps.The Mining Research Centre closed the field office in Nova Scotia and is preparing to open a new field office in Calgary, Alberta."

Evaluation of three dimensionally non-uniform strain distribution in rocks under various conditions such as in water or under freeze-thaw cycles is of significant importance to understand their complex deformations and fracturing mechanisms. For this purpose, we developed an image analysis method which can evaluate or “measure” the three dimensional (3-D) strain distribution in rocks. The proposed method utilizes the 3-D images of rock under initial and deformed configurations, which are obtained by some imaging techniques such as X-ray computed tomography (X-rayCT). In the proposed method, the obtained 3-D images are divided into multiple sub-regions of interest. For each sub-region, the strain is evaluated utilizing 3-D affine transform with unknown coefficients to be determined. In the first step, 3-D voxel level displacements at multiple representative points in each sub-region are computed by 3- D digital volume correlation technique between the comparison images and the initial-guess of the transform coefficients are obtained. In the second step, referring to the initial-guess of unknown transform coefficient, they were optimized in sub-voxel level by finding optimum digital volume correlation between the comparison images, which can evaluate the transform coefficients with higher precision. From the calculated transform coefficients, the strain was directly obtained through the spatial derivative of displacement based on affine transform. In this paper, along with the description of the proposed method, the evaluation of deformation in a lignite specimen due to immersion in water was presented as an application example. As the 3-D imaging technique, micro-focus X-rayCT was applied. The result showed that the induced dilatational strain field due to the initiation and extension of cracks in the specimen was clearly captured. Therefore, authors believe that the proposed method can be applicable to various problems in rock mechanics.

THE Granby Consolidated Mining, Smelting and Power Company, Limited, is engaged in the mining and concentrating of copper ores, and, incidentally, in the mining of coal and the production of electric power. The Company has been engaged in these various operations both on the mainland of British Columbia and on Vancouver island for the past forty-five years. This paper will attempt to cover their present operations in the Similkameen mining district of southern interior British Columbia. GENERAL CHARACTER OF THE DISTRICT The Interior Plateau in southern British Columbia ranges in elevation from 3,000 feet to 6,000 feet. In the vicinity of Princet0n, a depression in the Plateau forms a well defined basin which is floored with a series of nearly flat-lying Tertiary sediments containing some workable seams of lignite. From this basin, the upland surface rises gradually t0ward the south, from an elevation of 2,000 feet at Princet0n to 4,000 feet at Copper mountain, and 6,000 feet in the upper parts of the Similkameen basin, where it merges into the rugged and diversified t0pography of the Cascade system, with glacier inhabited peaks rising to over 9,000 feet. The valleys of Similkameen river and its tributaries are wide, having flaring sides and gentle slopes, and are separated one from another by subdued rounded spurs, of which Copper mountain is typical. The drainage of this district is taken care of by Similkameen river and its larger tributaries, such as Pasayten river, and Wolfe, Friday, and Whipsaw creeks. The name Copper mountain is applied to a gently arched, nearly flat-topped spur between the deep valley of Similkameen river to the west and the shallower valley of Wolfe creek tO the east. The mountain is appro-priately named from the number of copper deposits occurring on its sides and summit, some of which have been developed int0 an important producer, known as the Copper Mountain mine.

"The comments given are to help allay generally accepted ideas that the handling of arsenic as arsenic-trioxide (As2o3J in and from off gas pyrometallurgical operation fumes is difficult, hazardous and expensive. It need not be any of these things if the basic and rather unique chemic3l and physical properties are understood and taken care and advantage of through present day technologies. These particular characteristics are:-(1) As2o3 sublimes and re-condenses, at a relatively low temperature;(2) As2o3 is, for practical in-plant purposes, insoluble in water at ambient temperatures and quite soluble in water just below the boiling point;(3) residual suspended and dissolved As 2o3 can be removed from water by complete dissolution with very little sulfuric acid, followed by the addition of small amounts of ferrous sulfate and calcium chlorate, with oxidation to the ferric and arsenite state and precipitation of an insoluble ferric calcium arsenate, thereby lowering the As2o3 content of solutions to acceptable levels. Even lower levels of non-toxic forms of arsenic solids and residual As2o3 in the water solutions can be attained by also using phosphate, and lime, along with the above.A background re past arsenic processing methods, present day operations, plus predictions re future trends, and hazards, are outlined."

Abstract A simplified method of fatigue testing full-dimension, as-rolled, non-machined, mining drill rods is very desirable to the mining and steel industries in the classification of steels available on the market, through the evaluation of their fatigue limits and endurance strength. In this paper one such simplified method is presented and analysed. The preliminary results show many advantages of this method, such as simplicity and constancy of loading. The type of loading applied more or less simulates the working conditions of the outside fibres of the mining drill rods. Additional advantages of this method are the possibility of testing under dry and wet conditions, its quietness, and its ease of operation. Specially designed adaptors and specially applied techniques of fixing and preparation of samples make possible the breaking of a quarter-octagon hollow drill rod in a free length of uniform section in a rotating beam machine. At first glance this seems to be difficult to achieve. In the first preliminary test three different lots of steel were used. S-N curves under dry conditions were determined. These curves permit of the classification of the drill rods on the basis of the fatigue limit and endurance strength of the outside fibres of the metal, which is dependent to a greater or lesser extent on the effect of surface decarburization, surface imperfections, and special surface treatments. The average slope of the S.N curve in the damaging zone, and the fatigue limit in equal tension-compression rotating bending, were determined for SAE 1080, chromium-molybdenum and nickel-chromium-molybdenum mining drill rods. INTRODUCTION The fatigue limit and the endurance strength of mining drill rod steels are of interest to both the mining and the steel industries. These industries are greatly interested in lowering the cost of mining by reducing the consumption of these steels per ton of ore exploited.

A helicopter-mounted lake-sediment and lake-water survey was carried out over Grenville rooks in the Renfrew area (parts of Renfrew and Lanark counties) during four days of October, 1975. In the course of this survey. 1150 square kilometers were covered, with 246 lake-sediment and 276 lake -water samples collected from every body of water on which the helicopter could land. Sample sites, which averaged one per 4.6 square kilometers, included lakes, ponds, beaver ponds, swamps and marshes. Lake-sediment samples were taken using a G.S.C. sampler. Waters were collected directly into polyethylene bottles. At each sample site , surface and bottom-water pH, dissolved oxygen content, conductivity and temperature were measured using a Martel. Water Quality Analyzer. The lake sediments were air dried and then ball milled to pass a minus 80-mesh sieve. Lake sediments were analyzed for U by delayed neutron activation and for Mo, Cu, Zn, Pb, Fe, Mn, Ni and Co by atomic absorption techniques. The organic content of the sediments was determined by loss on ignition at 450 °C. Lake waters were acidified with nitric acid on the day of collection. The U content of the water s was determined by fluorometry; the Cu, Zn, Pb, Fe, Mn , Ni and Co contents of the waters were determined by solvent extraction - atomic absorption techniques. A close relationship was found between bodies of granitic, syenitic and pegmatitic bedrock and elevated U levels in the lake sediments. The Hurd Lake and White Lake granitic intrusive were encompassed by an annulus of higher U activity. Field inspection revealed that the U concentrations occur within a zone which may represent a contact metamorphic aureole. Within these complexes, anomalous concentrations of U appear to be associated with Mo. Information derived from the lake-water data reinforces the geochemical distributions outlined by the lake-sediment survey . This survey was carried out in order to develop optimum sampling and analytical procedures for geochemical reconnaissance of the Grenville Province that may be carried out under the auspices of the Uranium Reconnaissance Program.

"This paper presents the latest flotation development testwork conducted in 2015 on the ‘B Zone’ samples from the Strange Lake Alkalic Complex (SLAC). Since the discovery by Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC), metallurgical development has been under taken by a number of mining companies targeting various value metals, including yttrium, zirconium, niobium, and rare earths.Most recent, Quest Rare Minerals Ltd. (Quest) completed a Pre-Feasibility Study (PFS) in 2013 where the flowsheet was relatively complex and led Quest to explore alternative options. In 2014, the PFS flowsheet was simplified and one of the features introduced was pre-concentration by rougher flotation. The combined rougher flotation concentrate and slimes successfully recovered >90% TREE in 60% mass thus reducing capital cost and technical risks of the downstream hydrometallurgical processes. The latest flotation development testwork focused on achieving a pre-concentrate in which >80% TREE are recovered in 20% mass. Two separate reagent schemes, based on an ester phosphate collector (Clariant 1682) and a benzoylhydroxamic acid collector (Florrea 7510), were developed. Parameters evaluated in the development testwork included desliming, secondary yttrium and zircon collectors, depressants, temperature, conditioning temperature, time, and density, pH, sodium silicate type, cleaning, and flowsheet configuration. Both developed reagent schemes achieved the targeted metallurgy.INTRODUCTIONThe Strange Lake Alkalic Complex (SLAC) was discovered after geological survey and mapping studies by Geological Survey of Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Natural Resources between 1967 and 1980. Subsequent exploratory drilling programs by Iron Ore Company (IOC) in the 1980s found that the REE and high field strength element (HFSE) mineralization were within the central region of the SLAC which was named A Zone by IOC and later renamed Main Zone by Quest Rare Minerals Ltd. (Quest). Additional exploratory drilling outside the Main Zone by IOC and later by Quest, led to the discovery of B Zone, which was recognized as the most significant deposit of rare earth elements, yttrium, and zirconium in the SLAC. The B Zone Indicated Resources are estimated at 278.13 Mt at 0.93% total rare earth oxide (TREO) and Inferred Mineral Resources are estimated at 214.35 Mt at 0.85% TREO (Oyediran et al., 2014)."

"Place Dome Canada's Detour Lake Mine is a low-grade gold producer located in northeastern Ontario. Production is targeted for 2850 tonnes of ore per day. As reserves and mining areas continued to be found below and far to the west of the shaft (Fig. 1), it became necessary to review and upgrade the materials handling facilities. This paper deals with the selection, design and construction of an underground crusher and conveyor system capable of handling up to 450 tonnes per hour from the lowest existing level in the mine.BackgroundThe Detour Lake mine site is accessed via secondary Highway 652 which runs northeast out of Cochrane, Ontario. The road consists of 200 Ian of hard top followed by 100 Ian of well maintained gravel to the mine site. A 1500 m airstrip is maintained at the mine site for emergency use. Prior to 1991, the workforce was flown to and from the mine site. Crews were now bused to the site from Timmins. Remnants of a winter road exist to the southeast which at one time ended in La Sarre, Quebec. This was the route used to haul bulk items during the construction period and early production years.A town site has not been established at the site for the current operations. Instead, a rotational scheme is being utilized whereby most personnel will work seven days on site followed by seven days off site. For some employees, however, the work week is termed as a four/three schedule where they work 42 hours between Monday at 10:00 a.m. and Thursday at 4:00 p.m. with the following three days off. All surface employees and maintenance employees underground work 12-hour shifts. All underground employees work a lOV2-hour shift. Supervisors work a similar schedule as their crews, however, other staff may overlap their rotation during the week.A five-compartment shaft was sunk in 1984 from surface to the 610 m elevation. Shaft stations were established at the 120 m, 260 m, 360 m, 460 m, and 560 m levels. The cage compartment consists of a single deck, 4O-man cage in balance with a counterweight. The cage hoist is an Ingersoll-Rand 10H and is regulated to travel at 4.1 m/s. Two 9 t skips operate in balance at a travel speed of 7.1 mls. The skip hoist is a 3.05 m drum Nordberg. Both hoists are automated to function without a hoistman during normal skipping and cage service runs."

In presenting a thesis on this subject it is advisable to explain a few of the reasons for its seeming incompleteness. World progress has brought us to a position where approximations are not only to be condoned, but regarded as absolute essentials. Production in anticipation of demand is always accompanied by mistakes on the part of the producers. Only through trial and sometimes erring hypotheses may there be evolved the true course and theory upon which the steady triumphant march of world-wide industry depends. The average person likes to have everything placed ?before him in a clear and convincing manner. It is the impossibility of doing this which, in many cases, arises to confound the writer on shales. All that one can do is to present, as lucidly as possible, the known hypotheses' and theories on the subject and leave the reader to study and work out the truth for himself. Many theories have been advanced on the origin of oil-shales ; some may be correct in certain instances and not in others; however, the writer will attempt no decision as to which are and which are not correct, but .will merely point out the relative merits of each. The figures given for reserves of oil and shale in different countries are only approximations and give but a rough idea of the true conditions.

"AbstractCurrently installed an analogue instrumentation devices at Sherritt 's Ruttan Concentrator control. and/ or measure mill tonnages, grind, pH, density , some reagent and slurry flows, and cell levels. On-stream analysis is used to assay the main process streams. The history of development of process control is reviewed from startup to the present stage of selection of a process control computer. A pragmatic approach has been taken to process control to ensure compatibility with the needs and resources of Ruttan. Emphasis is made of the need to have the mill performing well from a mechanical and instrumentation point of view and to have opera tor acceptance of the computer through training. Plans for the computer phase to achieve these objectives are outlined.IntroductionTHE COPPER-ZINC OREBODY at Ruttan Lake was discovered by Sherritt exploration personnel in 1969 and by mid-1973 a 10,000-tpd mine and concentrator were in operation. After a typical startup period , the major mechanical problems in the crusher and concentrator have been resolved. Metallurgical performance is now up to standards forecast in the feasibility study.The cost of the original instrumentation installations, including an on- stream analyzer, was about one million dollars or 4% of the cost of the milling complex. Although there was no intention of using a process control computer until the plant was operating smoothly, it was understood that all instrumentation was compatible with .a computer, but this did not prove to be correct. This paper cover s the development of the instrumentation loops to date and the control strategies that will eventually be implemented through a process control computer."

With respect to impurities, HBM&S' copper smelter, located in Flin Flon, Manitoba, is in an unusual position. In addition to the usual concerns, the fact that copper and zinc production at Flin Flon is closely integrated results in the unique situation where feed to the copper smelter typically contains 7% to 8% zinc. This paper discusses the ramifications to copper smelter operations resulting from the marriage of HBM&S' metallurgical plants. Distributions of impurities (specifically Zn, Pb, Ni, As, Bi, Sb, and Cd) are presented and operating practices designed to reduce the impact of impurities on anode copper quality are detailed.

Ltd. (HBM&s), has been operating its metallurgical complex located in Flin Flon, Manitoba, since 1930. The smelter and zinc plant were originally separate entities with respect to production. The smelting operation consisted of traditional multiple-hearth roasters, a reverberatory furnace and Peirce-Smith converters. The zinc plant also utilized multiple hearth roasters and then followed with sulphuric acid leaching, purification and electrowinning. The zinc plant also recovered cadmium from a separate purification/electrowinning circuit.The two plants operated essentially independently of each other until rising zinc levels in the copper concentrate and large stockpiles of zinc-rich leach residues prompted the construction of the fuming plant in 1949. The smelter used pulverized coal to reduce zinc oxide present in the reverb slag and then captured the resulting zinc bearing fume in the fuming plant baghouse. The fume was sent to a separate ""oxide roaster"" in the zinc plant where it was first roasted to remove halogens and then leached to recover the contained zinc. This oxide fume became a major source of feed to the zinc plant accounting for roughly one quarter of the total zinc production. Furthermore, through the smelter's treatment of sulphide leach residue, both copper and zinc recoveries were improved for the over-all complex."
