"This study focuses on comparing the “blinding” effectiveness of various organic additives as part of a general review of using organic additives to mitigate preg-robbing and improve gold recovery during cyanide leaching of carbonaceous gold ores. The laboratory results compared the impact of various organic additives on the prevention of gold adsorption using both activated carbon and ore samples containing carbonaceous matter, generally referred to as total carbonaceous matter (TCM). Although several organic reagents were found to have a significant blinding effect on activated carbon, these results did not translate into increased gold leaching efficiencies with actual ore samples.INTRODUCTION Preg-robbing refractory ores, which contain carbonaceous matter, have been problematic in cyanide plants for many years. In industry, preg-robbing by carbonaceous matter may be mitigated using various techniques including flotation, to remove the carbonaceous matter; addition of blinding agents, to passivate the carbon surface and prevent adsorption of gold cyanide complex; roasting, to partially or fully destroy the carbonaceous matter; chemical oxidation (Abotsi & Osseo-Asare, 1986); pressure oxidation; or microbial deactivation (Dunne, Staunton, & Afewu, 2013). Carbon-in-Leach and Resin-in-Leach are also used as process alternatives in which activated carbon or resins are used to compete with the carbonaceous matter for gold cyanide adsorption. For highly preg-robbing ores, thiosulphate leaching may be considered as an alternative to conventional cyanide chemistry (Baláz, et al., 2000). Natural carbonaceous matter is composed mainly of hydrocarbons, organic acids, and graphitic/amorphous elemental carbon. Natural elemental carbon that behaves as activated carbon is considered to be the main reason for preg-robbing, although the true nature of this phenomenon is not fully understood (Tan, Feng, Lukey, & van Deventer, 2005). In general, the hydrocarbon fraction is assumed to have negligible interaction with gold, while organic acids, such as humic acids, may form complexes with gold, inhibiting its extraction in cyanide solutions. Organic reagents have been used for blinding carbonaceous matter in gold ores prior to cyanidation. Abotsi & Osseo-Asare (1987) tested various organic compounds, with two possible effects in mind. First, the organic compounds were expected to adsorb onto the surface of the solids as anionic/cationic species; the resulting electrostatic interactions between the Au(CN)2- anion and the negatively/positively charged surface would inhibit/enhance the gold uptake. Second, the organic reagents were expected to coat the surface of the carbonaceous component in the ore, limiting the available adsorption sites and reducing gold losses. "The research goal was to assess if analytical tool/s can be developed to quantify displacements around a geological fault as longwall face moves toward it and past it. A company was faced with crossing a 2-3 m (6-10 ft.) normal up-thrown fault in the development entries and the face while mining a 375 m (1,200 ft.) wide longwall face. A field monitoring and numerical modeling study was performed to develop data. Field measurements consisted of roof-to-floor convergence and rectangular rosettes in the immediate roof. Numerical modeling consisted of constructing a 3-D structural model using the FLAC3D software with the fault plane incorporated as ubiquitous joint. Based on analyses and field observations data, the coal company was informed of impending movements along the fault plane and likely impacts on the development entries. Additional stiff supports were installed in head gate entries around the stage loader and equipment about 60 m (200 ft.) outby of the longwall face (solid). As the longwall face approached the fault, predicted displacements were documented and manifested by severe loading on the installed supports.BACKGROUND AND STUDY OVERVIEWThis paper summarizes results of a cooperative study aimed at improving longwall mining operations in Illinois. More specifically, the study focused on: 1) In-mine measurements in development entries while mining ahead of and behind a faulted zone, 2) Making observations on stability of pillars and entries while mining through the fault, and 3) Developing simplified analytical structural models using FLAC3D to assess if predictive techniques can be developed to plan mining operations through fault zone. Available data on geometry of the fault with estimates of the cohesion and frictional parameters were used for modeling."

"The Westerose Leduc (D-3) pool, a Devonian reef reservoir situated in Central Alberta, Canada, has now been producing for over seven years. As a unit operation, the pool pro-vides an interesting example of the full exploitation of gravity segregation tendencies. The reef has a 238-foot oil column, underlain •by bottom water and over-lain by a substantial gas cap. The original hydrocarbons in place were 147.96 million STB oil and 94.4 MMMCF of Taw gas cap gas. Nine-teen producing wells on 80-acre spacing have been completed, most of which are highly productive. Gas injection operations return solution gas to the gas cap. A study of the rock and fluid properties of the pool show it to be conducive to production by gravity segregation at high rates. Monthly average producing rates have varied between 800 B/D and 8,000 B/D and have recently totalled 3,000 BID to 5,000 B /D. Recovery and performance predictions under partial pres-sure maintenance at 10,000 BID indicate an ultimate recovery of 66 per cent of the original oil in place. In the absence of pressure maintenance, recovery would be only slightly less."

"AbstractA new electromagnetic depth sounding technique was applied to the measurement of salt thickness above the workings in the Central Canada Potash Mine at Colonsay, Saskatchewan. The initial tests indicate that this new technique can measure salt thickness and that the technique possesses operational feature s which make it possible to monitor trends in salt thickness throughout the mine. The technique can be applied using existing equipment, but the tests do indicate the desirability of developing equipment with features specially suited to the mine environment.IntroductionTESTS were conducted in the Central Canada Potash Mine at Colonsay, Saskatchewan during 1974 and 1975 to determine if a new technique in electromagnetic depth sounding could provide a convenient means of measuring salt thickness above the workings. This new technique, which was described by Duckworth (1975), offers operational features which appear to be advantageous in this particular situation.The problem requires that soundings be made upward from the mine workings to the base of the second red shale. This shale forms an impermeable seal on top of the Prairie Evaporite. A knowledge of this salt thickness is of interest due to the need to avoid any possibility of the workings rising to cut the red shale. Another desirable objective is the detection of any disruptions of the red shale. Ideally, this should be done ahead of the workings in order that such areas of disruption may be avoided."

Cyanide has been used for the recovery of gold since the mid 1800s, but several jurisdictions have already banned its use, and environmental pressures are increasing to finding an alternative. Gold also forms chloride complexes similar to those of cyanide, but the use of chloride has never achieved widespread acceptance. This paper describes a chloride-based flowsheet, wherein the key unit process is the recovery and recycle of chloride ion. It is shown that the chloride-based flowsheet is competitive economically with the conventional cyanide-based flowsheets, and that it has a number of other advantages, particularly environmentally.

"Laboratory batch flotation tests were carried out on fine (-20 µm) hematite to investigate the non-polar oil’s influences when sodium oleate, octyl hydroxamic acid, or oleyl hydroxamic acid were used as a collector. Batch flotation tests were performed with artificial mixed minerals (hematite:quartz = 1:1) under natural pH condition and kerosene was utilized as the model oil. The experimental results showed that kerosene emulsion behaved differently when used in conjunction with the three collectors. Kerosene helped improve the flotation when sodium oleate or oleyl hydroxamic acid was used as a collector. Nevertheless, it reduced concentrate weight yield, grade and recovery to a noticeable extent when octyl hydroxamic acid was used as a collector, especially at low dosages. In addition, single hematite batch flotation kinetics tests coupled with water recovery measurement were carried out to study the role of kerosene at different collector dosages. It was observed that water drainage and the resulting froth destabilization by kerosene was dominant at low collector dosages, especially in the flotation using octyl hydroxamic acid. At higher collector dosages, the water drainage and froth destabilization effect by kerosene was possibly counter-balanced by the higher hematite hydrophobicity and bubble surface tension gradient, which led to more stable froth layer.INTRODUCTION The minerals industry is facing a steady decline in ore grade, compounded by increasing complexity of mineral dissemination. As a result, the ore has to be ground sufficiently fine to have a suitable degree of mineral liberation, which produces large percentages of fine and ultrafine particles outside of optimal size range for ore dressing. Due to the unique characteristics of fine particles, i.e., small mass, high specific surface area, and problems such as increased solubility of complex minerals (Finkelstein, 1997; Finkelstein & Allison, 1976; Fornasiero & Ralston, 2005), high reagent consumption, fast surface oxidation in the case of sulfides (Collins & Read, 1971; Klassen & Mokrousov, 1963), severe particle entrainment (Subrahmanyam & Forssberg, 1988; Warren, 1984), low flotation rates (Glembotsky, 1953; Philippoff, 1952; Ye & Miller, 1988), slime coating (T. K. Mitchell et al., 2005; Parsonage, 1984), etc., flotation performance of these finely ground ores is very poor in terms of low concentrate grade and recovery."

"As part of a general review of processing double refractory ores through Barrick Gold’s autoclaves / CIL facility at Goldstrike, blanking the preg robbing native carbon in the process solids with hard (m.p. 55 - 60 º C) paraffin wax was studied, specifically in relation to pressure oxidation. The improvement in CIL gold extraction was found to depend on the wax addition point, with hot, dry contacting of the ore in the presence of wax - prior to POX - yielding the largest, most consistent improvement in gold extraction.INTRODUCTIONDouble refractory gold ores present two barriers to gold extraction. The first is generally a physical barrier: the gold is encapsulated or dispersed in a matrix which is impervious to the gold lixiviant. In most cases, including Carlin Trend, NV, deposits, this involves a pyrite or arsenopyrite matrix, although minor gold may also be dispersed in competent silica (quartz) or iron oxides. Gold can be rendered accessible by oxidative destruction of such sulphide matrices. At Goldstrike this is practised by roasting and autoclave oxidation (Thomas, 1994). It is the latter route to which this paper refers.The second barrier refers to the actual gold recovery. Gold may be extracted from the pressure oxidized solids with cyanide, forming a gold cyanide complex. One characteristic of this complex is that it adsorbs on graphitic surfaces. This is taken advantage of on a large scale by gold millers, who use manmade activated, i.e., graphitized carbon particles to remove the gold from solution during leaching: the Carbon-In-Leach, or CIL process. The gold cyanide bearing carbon particles are larger than the ore solids and can be separately recovered by screening. Goldstrike uses the CIL technology to recover gold. The second barrier becomes problematic when the ore naturally contains graphitic orcarbonaceous material, hereafter referred to as native carbon (versus the man-made activated carbon). This material may also adsorb gold cyanide in competition with the activated carbon. Since the native carbon is ground with the ore it is much smaller than the activated carbon. Any competition between the two carbons may produce a loss of gold from the pregnant leach liquor to the process tailings. This phenomenon is called “preg robbing”. Goldstrike ores come from the Carlin trend, which is known for the occurrence of native carbon (Adams & Burger, 1998; Schmitz, Duyvesteyn, Johnson, Enloe & McMullen, 2001; Tretbar, 2004)."

Pyrrhotite (Po) is widely considered to be the most significant mineral in the self-heating of sulphides. It is therefore desirable to determine the amount of Po in mineral samples. This is commonly accomplished through x-ray diffraction (XRD) or quantitative evaluation of materials by scanning electron microscopy (QEM-SEM). This paper introduces another quantitative method based on Mossbauer analysis that requires limited sample preparation and has the additional potential to detect the sulphur/iron ratio within Po. The technique is explored using pentlandite/pyrrhotite mixtures.

AUTHENTIC records show that coal mining in Cape Breton dates from the year 1720, when the French military authorities obtained coal from what is now known as the Blockhouse seam, in the Morien district, for use at Louisburg, where the fortress, now of such historic interest, was being built. Thereafter, coal was mined more or less continuously, and although, for many years, in a very haphazard way, there was, on the whole, a steady growth towards a better regulation of the industry, culminating in the year 1825 with the arrival of the General Mining Association in Nova Scotia. This Company, more generally known as the G.M.A., had acquired extensive tracts in Brazil and Colombia and had also purchased the mining rights for the whole of Nova Scotia-excepting such areas as had been previously leased-the attraction being the rich veins of copper currently reported as occurring in the Province. These fabulous copper veins, upon examination, failed to materialize, but the engineer sent out to report on them returned with such good accounts of the coalfields he had seen that steps were taken immediately to investigate them. From that rime onward, the history of coal mining in Nova Scotia is one of progress and achievement. One of the first acts of the G.M.A. was to acquire the areas already leased to other concerns and develop these in a masterly fashion, employing the best machinery and talent available at that time. Such dominant control over the minerals of the Province, although it led to orderly development in the several coalfields, also, later on, resulted in restricting operations in the various coal centres to such an extent that a determined effort was put forward by the people of Nova Scotia to end such a state of affairs. Consequently, in 1857, the original lease of the G.M.A. was abrogated, the Company, however, being allowed to retain certain areas in the districts it had already developed. This opened the way for the formation of other coal-mining companies, and numbers of these immediately sprang into existence in the various coal-mining centres. In 1893, the Dominion Coal Company, Limited, was formed by the amalgamation of seven companies operating in the neighbourhood of Glace Bay, in Cape Breton. Later, in 1910, the Dominion Iron & Steel Company, Limited, obtained control of the Cumberland Railway & Coal Company, which had been formed in 1884 to acquire the rights of the two companies working in the Cumberland County coalfield.

The past decade shows record increases in global demand for minerals and metals with an accompanying significant decline in skilled personnel. Mining companies today are examining new technologies to maximize production, reduce costs, and create safer work conditions to deal with this shortfall. Automation of an open-pit mine haulage system is receiving attention as a beneficial option since it provides more consistent and efficient operation of mining equipment, it removes workers from potential danger, it reduces fuel consumption significantly reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and it can help optimize vehicle repairs and equipment replacement because of more-predictable and better-controlled maintenance. This paper describes a simulation model under development using the EXTENDSIM software package to examine scale-up issues and constraints of autonomous vehicles in comparison to a manual system. The software can predict and manage Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), such as productivity, safety, cost, equipment failures, fuel consumption, and tire wear under different road and load conditions. By breaking-down the various systems of an autonomous haulage truck and simulating the overall haulage system using a Monte Carlo approach, the model becomes a flexible and powerful tool to use within a mining organization. Direct comparison to a manuallyrun system can be done to show the cost and operational benefits of automation. Project managers can use this tool to guide decision-making about possible application of autonomous haulage trucks at a specific mine site.

In a wider sense, I am including the entire western hemisphere, which may yet stand as the last bulwark of political and industrial democracy.As for the treasures of which I am about to speak, may I remind you that there are no• material treasures but those derived from the earth, and they are derived by one of two processes, -mining and farming. These two fundamental industries are the basis, and the sole material basis, of our welfare, our wealth, our very existence. From farming, whether it be farming of the land. or farming of the sea, we obtain the food to keep us alive, healthy and able to work."

DURING the last three years, investigations on the aluminum reduction of magnesium-bearing compounds have been initiated at the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry, The Technical University of Norway. The results of these investigations are reported in this paper. Very little information exists in the literature on the reaction between magnesium compounds and metallic aluminum. The available information itself is conflicting, and, to clarify the existing discrepancy, the reactions between aluminum and magnesium oxide (MgO), caJcined dolomite (CaO . MgO) and olivine (Mg2SiO.) were studied. The logical approach for the study of these reactions between condensed states with the formation of a gaseous phase is, ( 1) the measurement of the equilibrium vapour pressure of the gas, in this case magnesium, associated with the respective reactions and, (2) the identification of the end products of the reaction in order to establish the re-action scheme.

This paper points out two key elements in resource trade in general and the Canada-Japan relationship in particular. The first is that the advanced countries have a more important role than one would expect in the supply of resources in world trade. Canada 's dual role as a major resource supplier in conjunction with an advanced economy will continue to increase. The second point is the heavy reliance on foreign resource supplies in some advanced economies, particularly in Japan. Finally, as regard the future of the Canada-Japan economic relationship, particularly .in resource development, it is suggested that trade could be enhanced by an accelerated exchange of various types of resources between the two countries. These include natural resource commodities as well as the more abstract capital, technological and human resources.

Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde S.A.A leaches secondary copper sulfides. In recent years, the mine has introduced innovations that have improved the management of mineral crushing, agglomeration, curing, and leaching. The crushing plant, for example, uses the concepts of degree of balance and percentage of time in an operationally balanced state which, displayed in real time, facilitate more intensive and uniform utilization of the crushers. High agglomerate quality is ensured with the correct dose of moisture, which is adjusted to the changing characteristics of the mineral through the use of electrical conductivity measurements. The amount of acid used for curing the agglomerate is also adjusted by using quality control information. Finally, the stockpile irrigation regime is managed using the criteria established by the "Lixiviant Request Rate", which optimizes the addition of leaching solution, creating such benefits as faster recovery, and reduced acid and energy consumption.

THE Great War forced the peoples of the world to recognize the importance of the wise development and use of the world's natural resources. Not the least, and perhaps the most, important, is the world's fuel supply- solid, liquid, and gaseous. Without fuel our civilization would be impossible, and mankind would of necessity have to congregate in the torrid zones of the earth's surface for at least six months of every year. Of the three classes of fuels the solid ones are the most plentiful, as well as being the most widely distributed, since few countries are entirely devoid of solid fuels of one kind or another. Until a hundred years ago wood was the fuel most generally used in this country, but since then coal has supplanted wood as a fuel in all its uses, except in the outlying districts and among the farming communities. For many years the supply of coal was thought to be unlimited, but as years went by more thought and study were given to the world's coal resources, until today not only are the limits known, but in one instance at least their depletion is predicted to be almost within the age of living men, unless more provident methods are put into practice for their winning and utilization.

The Boleo Copper-Cobalt-Zinc-Manganese Project of Baja Mining Corp. is situated adjacent to Santa Rosalia on the Baja Peninsula of Mexico. The El Boleo ore is a mixed oxide-sulfide deposit with major values in copper, cobalt, zinc and manganese. The metallurgical process designed to treat the El Boleo orebody involves a sulfuric acid leach in seawater using oxidative and then reductive leaching to maximize metal extraction. The leach solution is separated from the barren solids via counter current washing through a series of high rate thickeners. Copper is recovered using conventional SX-EW processing as cathode. Zinc and cobalt are extracted from the copper SX raffinate after iron and aluminum precipitation. The CSIRO DSX solvent system (Versatic® 10 and LIX® 63 mixture) are used in this extraction. Manganese remains in the DSX raffinate and is recovered by soda ash addition as a high quality manganese carbonate precipitate. Zinc and cobalt are acid stripped from the loaded DSX solvent. Zinc is then re-extracted away from cobalt using Cyanex® 272 extractant and stripped into a highly concentrated strip liquor (+100 g/L Zn) and directed to either a spray dryer or a granulator for production of zinc sulfate monohydrate. The zinc solvent extraction raffinate, containing cobalt, advances to another SX circuit using Cyanex® 272, for the recovery of cobalt as cobalt cathode. In this paper, the detailed results from bench and integrated pilot plant testing for zinc recovery from the El Boleo ore will be described. The results of this testing are currently being used to engineer the commercial plant at El Boleo.

The original analogue instrumentation at Lornex Mining Corporation to optimize the throughput by controlling the power drawn by the semi-autogenous mills was found to be inadequate because of the frequent changes in ore type. Although the trunnion bearing pressure of the mill was a crucial control criterion, it was not utilized in the original control scheme. After several plant tests of different types of analogue controllers were unsuccessful in finding any control equipment suitable for this application, it was concluded that a digital process control computer was required. Computer control strategy to optimize the grinding rate by controlling the power and the bearing pressure of the semi-autogenous mill was developed and a Fox 2 /30 computer made by Foxboro was selected. After six months of experimentation, it was found that the throughput was increased substantially by computer control.

IN a preliminary paper (1) it was shown that the addition of small quantities of metallic aluminium powder almost completely inhibited the solubility of siliceous material in the beaker. Six rabbits exposed to quartz dust for six months all showed well developed silicosis. Seven rabbits exposed to quartz dust plus 1 per cent metallic aluminium powder for the same period did not develop silicosis. At that time, we were not in a position to state either the manner in which metallic aluminium reduced the solubility of siliceous material, or, from the animal experiments, whether the aluminium was acting locally or systemically, or for what period after the cessation of dusting it would continue to act. This paper reports the further progress of this investigation. CHEMICAL EXPERIMENTATION The technical details pertaining to the various substances used in the experiments are given in an appendix which is on deposit with the American Documentation Institute, Washington, D.C. For lack of space, it is not printed here. The term 'solubility' is used to indicate the concentration of silica in the solution under the conditions as noted, determined colorimetrically (2), and expressed as parts per million (p.p.m.). The term 'reduction in solubility' indicates the difference between the solubility of the .silica in the presence of the aluminium powder and its solubility in the absence of aluminium powder. It will be noted that the solubility figures for different samples of quartz with no added aluminium vary considerably. The figures do not refer to an equilibrium solubility of silica but to the actual amount of silica dissolved from a given sample in a given time at a given temperature. In view of the fact that quartz dissolves extremely slowly, it is evident that the actual figures in any case will depend upon the surface exposed, i.e., fineness of grinding of the different samples.

"I.-IntroductionAn attempt bas been made in this paper to provide a basis for appraisal of the future of the coal briquetting industry in Alberta by outlining the processes used for briquetting various ranks of coal, by specifying the requirements of a briquetted fuel, by indicating .the status of the industry in the United States, by giving developments in Western Canada, by assessing costs of processing, and by discussing briquetting researches in progress. Much of .the detail bas been omitted since this might mask, rather than reveal, the more important phases of the problem. Reference will be made when possible to published articles where many of the details can be obtained.It should be stated at the outset that, in the writer’s opinion, there are three possible developments in Alberta as regards briquetting: (a) an expansion of the briquetting of the fines of • non-coking and coking coals of semi-anthracite, and of low and medium volatile bituminous rank; (b) the processing of the fines of high-volatile C bituminous coals; and (c) the upgrading of the lower rank high-moisture sub-bituminous coals. Details of the chemical and physical properties of these coals can be obtained in publications of the Research Council of Alberta (1, 2), and of the Fuel Research Station, Bureau of Mines, Ottawa (3).Semi-anthracite and low and medium volatile bituminons coals occur in the mountain areas of Alberta, where, during the upthrust of the Rocky mountains, the coal beds served as the sliding surface. This resulted in the coals being; crushed and consequently they contain a h1gh percentage of fines. In some cases they are high in mineral matter and require to be cleaned before being processed.
