The Tom's Gully gold mine is located 90km ESE from Darwin, in the Northern Territory of Australia. The orebody is the auriferous portion of a large sulphide rich quartz reef, hosted in the Wildman Siltstone Formation of the Early Proterozoic Pine Creek Inlier, at the NH extremity of the Mount Bundey granite-syenite intrusion. It was discovered by Carpentaria Exploration Company Pty Ltd on November 17th, 1986, using stream sediment geochemistry.The reef is 800m long at surface, strikes E-H and dips approximately 300 to the south, becoming progressively less steep. Only the eastern half of the reef is auriferous, with gold grades averaging 9 g/t plus anomalous silver, base metals and arsenic.The enclosing siltstone is a dark grey banded carbonaceous and pyritic metapelite, showing areenschist regional metamorphism and thermal effects from the adjacent pluton. The present study investigates the possibility of the direct removal of oxygen from the Ti-30Ni (wt per cent) alloy melt through the thermodynamic equilibrium reactions at 1623 K in the vertical tube furnace. The deoxidation efficiency of Ti-Ni alloy melt by adding different contents of metallic calcium (Ca) as a deoxidant was evaluated with the binary CaF2-MgCl2 flux. The thermodynamic equilibrium experiments showed that the total oxygen content in the alloy decreased from about 650 ppm to 350 ppm when 3.5 wt per cent Ca was added to the Ti-30Ni (wt per cent) alloy. Alternatively, the effect of flux composition in the CaF2-MgCl2 flux on the oxygen content was also investigated at 1623 K. Therefore, the effect of binary flux systems on the deoxidation ability was compared at 1623 K. According to the results, the flux system with 80 per centCaF2– 20 per centMgCl2 exhibited the best deoxidation capability, ie total oxygen content in the alloy reduced from 1450 to 550 ppm.

The complexity in treating environmentally harmful impurities such as As, Sb, Bi from the base metal matte or metal in the smelting stage are responsible for the high cost of the refining process. The impurity capacities (such as arsenic, antimony and bismuth) of slags were calculated a priori using Reddy-Blander (RB) model. The capacity predictions were for a wide range of matte and slag compositions in copper smelting conditions. The calculated impurities capacities and impurity distribution ratios results are in good agreement with the available experimental and industrial slags data. The a priori knowledge of impurities is useful for reduction of energy consumption and enhanced environmental control in the current and future non-ferrous metal processes.

The Elura Orebody consists of a number of parallel, vertically oriented pipe-like structures of pyrite-sphalerite-galena mineralization located at the core of a structural dome. Concentric zoning of the mineralization into an outer Siliceous, intermediate Pyritic and inner Pyrrhotitic Zone has been previously recognized and is used in routine geologic modelling of the lead, zinc and silver grades.Statistical analysis of the metal grade distribution in the orebody has confirmed the importance of the mineralogical zones in the understanding of grade trends. The gradational nature of intra-zone boundaries, especially those related to the subjective definition of the Siliceous Zone, are apparent in the statistics.

The iron ore producer Rana Gruber AS is situated in northern Norway just below the Arctic Circle, and has been producing hematite and magnetite concentrates for more than 60 years. Since the late 1990s, the major part of the production comes from a sublevel stoping underground operation after many years of open pit mining. Despite moderate mining depth, the operations have experienced considerable rock stress problems due to quite high tectonic, horizontal stresses. To manage the problems, comprehensive rock mechanics investigations have been carried out by SINTEF, a major contract research organisation. This has included in situ rock stress measurements, laboratory investigations and numerical modelling. Based on this and practical experience, satisfactory design of vertical and horizontal pillars was achieved. At depth, the ore width increases from 30–40?m to more than 100?m. This, together with a major planned increase in production, called for a change of the mining method. After thorough investigations and considerations, it was decided to change to sublevel caving, very much like the LKAB system. The development of the new system has been closely followed up by rock mechanics measures, including 3D numerical modelling and comprehensive monitoring of deformations and rock stress changes. To achieve a satisfactory caving of the hanging wall, all vertical and horizontal pillars in the sublevel stoping area had to be removed. This has been a challenging task, and the development of the caving has been slow until recently. There are still vast areas of Australia in which either the hydrocarbon potential has already been indicated but from which no hydrocarbons have been produced or else are completely untested. Despite the lack of recent new oil discoveries, it is anticipated that initial gas discoveries in these areas will be followed by oil discoveries as has happened historically. General exploration activities are continually providing new information that is being input to update previous hydrocarbon assessments for Australia, and all indications are that future exploration efforts will discover a lot of gas, some small oil pools and there is a chance to prove a major new oil province. Because of this, it is anticipated that reserves growth will continue at the average historical rate of about 200 MMB/year until the year 2000. The most frequent scenario will be costly exploration resulting in small oil discoveries and high development costs. This, in the past, has resulted in low profitability for Australian oil exploration, but windfalls for the Australian government.

Two blasthole density logging programmes have been conducted on the Mt Whaleback iron ore mine to evaluate the use of this type of logging as an aid to blast pattern design. The first programme also involved the setting up of a Density Test facility with which to calibrate the density probe. The programmes indicated that about 22-23 blastholes can be consistently logged per day at a cost of $1.30 per metre. Even though this is only half the rate required to log the average number of blastholes drilled daily on Mt Whaleback, testwork indicated that no significant loss of accuracy results if only half the holes in a pattern are logged. The major results of the programmes were: 1. The density range for black pyritic Shale is 2.2-2,9 g/cc. 2. The density range for soft to medium hard BIF is 2.1-3.0 g/cc. 3. The density range for hard BIF is 3.0-3.6 g/cc. 4. The front row blastholes show consistently lower densities than the main body holes due to blast damage. 5. A low density zone extending to a maximum depth of 6 m occurs at the top of most blastholes and results from blast damage from the bench above. the German ruining industry uses different residues for hackfilling and stowing. A hydraulic pipe conveying technology for these materials has shown advantages for the transportation into the mine. Pipeline conveying systems are able to bridge long distances, they save room within the underground workings and they save staff and costs. Absolutely necessary for successful use of the hydraulic conveying technology is the knowledge about the unusual non-Newtonian flow properties of solid/liquid mixtures like pastes and slurries. The flow resistance of these materials cannot be described easily by one viscosity. Owing to a yield point and a pseudo-plastic behaviour the viscosity changes with the shear rate and with the streaming velocity inside the pipe. Also these flow behaviours depend very sensitively on the liquid/solid-ratio, often so dramatically that gravimetric or volumetric dosing equipment is not in a position to control the production of backfill pastes. Quality changes of the solid raw materials (particle size distribution, density, mineralogical composition) lead to additional difficulties. The first experiences with hydraulic backfilling plants were troubled by plugged pipes. a bad backfill quality caused by unnecessarily high water content and high costs for chemical binders to solidify the backfill. The installation of viscosity controlled paste production leads to success with the hydraulic backfill technology. A development of the l)MT, a bypass pipe-viscometer, has been the key technology. The system is able to analyse on-line, difficult, sticky and abrasive substances and determine their non-Newtonian flow properties. Because the system measures real physical values it is in a position to pre-calculate process relevant parameters like the pressure drop of the backfilling paste in the conveying pipeline. Newer types of the viscometer system also measure the slurry density and calculate its composition. These systems have proven a success controlling backfill paste production plants. They offer it secure prevention of pipeline plugging and a production of high quality backfill pastes with a water content as low as possible.

Work to date has shown that the use of Al2O3:SiO2 ratios is suitable for identifying potential gibbsite bearing samples. Subsequent confirmatory XRD analysis helps to refi ne this initial identification. Based on these methods, gibbsite has been mapped in two common settings:1. along steeply dipping faults, or2. in association with stratigraphic contacts where one unit is aluminous (eg dolerite dyke).On a microscale, the samples studied illustrate an association between haematite, and to a lesser extent goethite, and gibbsite. In these samples the dominant forms of haematite are discrete crystalline phases of either microplaty haematite or euhedral martite. Two dominant forms of gibbsite were observed:1. vein style gibbsite that cross-cuts (or infill’s cracks) in goethite ± martite iron oxide associations, or2. gibbsite intimately intergrown with and forming a matrix to microplaty haematite.Some of the gibbsite microstructures observed suggest that it may have formed during a very hydrous, possibly hypogene, stage of the deposit genesis. The presence of this crystalline gibbsite, and in particular its occasionally euhedral form, suggests that aluminium was at some stage remobilised, at least locally, and then precipitated from solution as gibbsite. These observations suggest that these has been a phase of gibbsite precipitation that may have had a close but complex relationship with regards to the timing of the mineralisation processes, rather than formation as a result of late stage lateritic weathering.

The Tampakan deposit is a strongly telescoped high-sulphidation-epithermal/ porphyry deposit pair which is hosted by a sequence of probable Pliocene age subaerial andesite flows. These host units lie on the western flank of a deeply dissected andesitic stratovolcano within the northernmost portion of the Sangihe Arc in southern Mindanao. The deposit was discovered by WMC geologists in 1992 and is currently undergoing resource evaluation. Preliminary resource estimations indicate a total inferred metal content of 12 million tonnes of copper metal and 16 million ounces of gold. Using a 0.2 per cent Cu cut-off grade, the deposit has a current mineral resource of approximately 2.5 billion tonnes with an estimated grade of 0.48 per cent copper. At a higher cut-off grade of 0.5 per cent Cu, the mineral resource is approximately 900 million tonnes with an estimated grade of 0.75 per cent copper. Mineralisation is open both to the west and at depth. The Tampakan district is centrally located with respect to a 100 km wide zone of left-lateral strike-slip deformation represented by the trans-Mindanao Cotabato Fault Zone. The district is transected by several WNW-striking wrench faults which represent strands of the regional Cotabato Fault Zone. High-sulphidation epithermal mineralisation within the Tampakan deposit is strongly controlled by NNE-trending faults which lie along a dilational orientation within the Pliocene stress field associated with the Cotabato strike-slip fault zone. The mineralisation is broadly hosted by a gently-dipping, tabular zone of partial to massive silicification which displays multi-phase brecciation, acid-leaching, related vuggy porosity and which is developed within a district-scale advanced-argillic and argillic lithocap exceeding 90 km 2 in area. High-sulphidation epithermal mineralisation is associated with a silica-pyrophyllite-dickite-alunite-diaspore¦sericite alteration assemblage which is transitional downward to sericite-chlorite alteration and relict potassic biotite-chlorite-magnetite-anhydrite alteration associated with pervasively developed but weakly mineralised porphyry quartz stockwork veins. The high-sulphidation mineralisation is dominated by disseminated, vein and vug-filling enargite-bornite-digenite-chalcocite-covellite ¦ molybdenite which has overprinted an earlier phase of porphyry copper stockwork veins associated with high-level porphyritic hornblende diorite stocks. The distribution of high-sulphidation alteration and mineralisation reflects strong stratigraphic and structural controls. The high-sulphidation mineralisation covers a surface area of approximately 1.6 km by 2.0 km and forms a tabular, flat-lying to gently-dipping body between 200 and 500 metres thick. It is intersected at RL-1200 m ASL (at surface) in the northern portion of the deposit and extends down to RL-600 m ASL at the southern end. The deposit has been diamond-drill tested to a depth of 400 - 500 metres where low-grade chalcopyrite-bornite-pyrite mineralisation is hosted by pervasive quartz stockwork veins. This deep-level mineralisation represents the outer portion of a porphyry Cu system hosted by both andesite flows and the uppermost portions of high-level hornblende diorite stocks. Deep drilling to test for higher tenor porphyry Cu mineralisation is planned.

Coal washing practice can be improved not only by critical examination of the plant being operated but also by studying plants operated in other areas. The developments at the Australian Iron & Steel Pty. Ltd. plants are discussed in relation to experiences there as well as developments which have taken place in Queensland in recent years. Early A.I.S. problems involved small coal cleaning in heavy medium cyclones and flotation. A proposed future plant flowsheet for A.I.S. is considered in the light of these experiences. Reference is made to plants operated by the Thiess, Peabody, Mitsui Coal Company Pty. Ltd. at Moura and the Utah Development Company's plants at Blackwater and Goonyella in the development of coal washing prac- tice in Australia.

Hidden under picturesque Bemic Lake, in Canada's eastern Manitoba, lies a highly fractionated pegmatite orebody, hosting a unique assemblage of minerals. Accidentally discovered in 1929, the orebody had a brief history as a tin producer, but it is now mined by Tantalum Mining Corporation of Canada, Ltd. (TANCO), for its cesium, lithium, rubidium and tantalum bearing minerals. The mine also has potential for mbidium-feldspar, amblygonite, gallium rich mica, and quartz production. This paper describes the geology of the orebody, and its mining and processing. Selective, concurrent, mining and milling of the various products necessitates a high degree of planning and control, and these aspects are also discussed. The introduction of Quality Control and SPC are discussed, for such are the keys to excellence.

Geometallurgical parameters are descriptions of the mineralogy and microstructure of the ore determining its mineralogical and microstructural characteristics. From a conditional geostatistical simulation of such properties, a processing model can compute recovery, equipment usage, processing costs, and thus the monetary value for mining and processing a block with certain processing parameters. The output can be used for optimising mining sequences or finding optimal processing parameters by solving the corresponding stochastic optimisation problem.The approach requires two properties of the simulation not provided by established geostatistical techniques:Many relevant geometallurgical parameters are from non-Euclidean statistical scales such as (mineral) compositions, (grain size) distribution, (grain) geometry, and (stratigraphic type) categorical, which might produce nonsensical values (for example, negative proportions, negative facies probablities, planar grains) when simulated with standard geostatistical techniques.Due to the nonlinearity of processing, the entire conditional distribution of the geometallurgical parameters is relevant, not only its mean and variance. The geostatistical simulation needs to reproduce the joint conditional distributions of all the geometallurgical parameters.The multipoint conditional geostatistical simulation technique discussed here allows for jointly simulating dependent spatial variables from various sample spaces. The technique combines an infill simulation, similar to the one used in multipoint geostatistics, with a new form of distributional regression to estimate conditional distributions of arbitrary scales from different information sources, including training images, training models and observed data. The distributional regression is based on a generalisation of logistic regression and is related to both Bayesian Maximum Entropy geostatistics and high order cumulants.The method ensures that simulated data reside in the set of possible values and honour the characteristics of the joint distribution to be reproduced. This paper discusses characterisation techniques that can be applied to complex waste products from metal production and processing operations with the aim of devising treatment methods for upgrading the metal content for recycling. Two waste streams were selected to illustrate the role of characterisation in adapting mineral processing techniques to provide an effective recycling strategy. Waste products chosen were:aluminium dross, which contains metallic aluminium particles in a coarse matrix of many components; and steel shredder sludge that contains copper wire and other metallics in a matrix of plastic and natural fibres, iron oxides, metallic iron, and other compounds. Characterisation methods discussed include chemical analysis (XRF, ICP-AES, and selected specialised techniques), phase analysis (XRD, SEM, TEM, and optical microscopy), morphology (IFESEM), sizing analysis (screening, Cyclosizing, Infrasizing, Malvern sizing), and general techniques such as particle shape, surface area, and porosity determinations. The applicability of these techniques to the waste products is considered in relation to their advantages and disadvantages, and sampling issues.Treatment techniques considered for the two waste products included comminution, screening, air or water classification, simple water leaching, gravity separation, magnetic separation, flotation, and eddy current separation.Tentative flow sheets were developed for the two wastes. For aluminium dross, it was proposed to use fine crushing followed by water washing to remove soluble chlorides and aluminium nitride, and then desliming followed by flotation of the granular fraction to give a metallic aluminium-rich concentrate. For shredder sludge, it was proposed to use wet screening, water classification, and gravity concentration to produce a copper-rich product and magnetic separation to produce a metallic iron-rich product.

The Rise & Shine Shear Zone is a shallow-dipping Cretaceous late metamorphic shear zone formed in a compressional environment. The Shotover mineralised system is dominated by normal faults with well-defined vein systems that cut across Miocene schist folds and faults related to the inception of the Alpine Fault. Despite the geological differences between these mineralisation systems, they share many common features of hydrothermal alteration that have resulted in disseminated gold in altered sheared schist. The most distinctive feature of both systems is the abundant ankeritic carbonate that has formed from decomposition of metamorphic chlorite. Excess iron from this alteration reaction combined with hydrothermal sulphur to form sulphides that host the disseminated gold. The chlorite decomposition reaction was reversed in the latter stages of both mineralisation systems, and this was accompanied by further gold emplacement in the Rise & Shine system.   Both alteration systems involved initial decomposition of metamorphic albite, followed by deposition of albite as a vein mineral in the latter stages. The fluid flow that yielded the disseminated gold was controlled by microshears that pervade host schists, in strong contrast to many Otago Schist vein systems where host rock alteration is absent. The ankeritic alteration in the Shotover and Rise & Shine mineralised systems has increased the volume of mineralised rock, and may have made suitable targets for large-tonnage, low grade gold deposits.

Dimension stone is the term generally given to rock used in building construction. During early European history in Otago, locally available dimension stone products were easily obtained. Crude rock shelters built on river banks with schist rock within Central Otago soon gave way to more established and sophisticated permanent homesteads constructed with the same materials. Victorian architectural achievement is celebrated in Otago with many fine bluestone block buildings. When the University Council decided to build substantially in stone, it narrowly escaped disaster. It was well known at the time that brick in Dunedin was of an inferior quality and that it soon wasted. Rev Dr Stuart said before the 1879 Commission that æthe Council had some old-world notions and liked to have the University with some architectural styleÆ. Contemporary utilisation of dimension stone is generally restricted by expense to a simple veneer. Stone products produced from Otago quarries have found ready markets in other areas in New Zealand , particularly prior to the share market crash in 1987.
