Declines for both access and rock haulage are replacing shafts for mining relatively shallow deposits of down to 1000 m below surface. Where the orebody does not outcrop and where surface access may be restricted, it is often necessary to drive long dead end headings before a connection can be made back to surface and a ventilation circuit created. In hot tropical areas and where large diesel powered equipment is used for mining, heat may also be a problem at these relatively shallow depths. The normal design criteria based on statutory limits and good practice used to evaluate ventilation and cooling requirements in terms of air velocity, dust, gases, diesel exhaust dilution, re-entry after blasting and heat stress are described in this paper. These are then used to design and cost alternative auxiliary ventilation systems that include leakage based on general fan performance curves and typical duct systems. The implications of the current European Community recommendations regarding nitrous fumes are also briefly considered. The actual problem relates to a 2100 m long decline that may have to be extended to 3000 m long without a connection to surface or through ventilation and is located in a hot tropical area where the surface wet bulb temperatures may exceed 25¦C for more than a third of the summer period. Once the preliminary ventilation design is completed, the auxiliary ventilation system can be modelled and simulations undertaken that incorporate heat and moisture transfer routines with the objective of determining the cooling load and amount of refrigeration required. Cognisance is taken of cyclic diesel operations and the thermal flywheel effect of the surrounding rock on the wet and dry bulb temperatures resulting from these operations.A suitable modular cooling system located at the portal is described and optimised with capital and operating costs of both the ventilation and cooling systems provided.

This is a brief introduction of a sewer pipeline constructed with a pipe jacking method in combination with a 1 200 mm finished inner diameter tunnel boring machine developed for the first time in Japan. The pipeline is located under a national highway running through a densely built urban area and is 185.7 m long and 2.9 m to 3.7 m deep from the ground surface. The geological features along the pipeline show mostly slate and partly silt. The pipeline was constructed with a newly developed multi-application type tunnel boring machine equiped with a fluid transport system. The construction consisted of tunneling by a tunnel boring machine followed by pipe jacking operations. The excavated materials were dis- charged off the tunnel by a fluid transport System.

BHP Billiton Diamonds Inc (BHPB) has been mining kimberlite from several pipes at the Ekati Diamond MineTM located 300 km north of Yellowknife since 1997. Processing of kimberlite produces coarse kimberlite rejects (CKR, 0.5 to 8 mm) and fine tailings (less than 0.5 mm). The CKR are trucked to the Coarse Kimberlite Reject Storage Area (CKRSA) located within the drainage area of the tailings impoundment (Long Lake Containment Facility û LLCF). The coarse rejects are wet when dumped and are expected to freeze as a result of annual average site temperatures of about -10¦C. Seasonal thawing occurs along the exposed edges of the pile. Monitoring of the CKR indicates they have consistently low sulfur concentrations (0.4 per cent) accompanied by high acid neutralisation potentials (78 to 337 kg CaCO3/t). Carbonate concentrations vary from 0.9 per cent to 3.4 per cent. The CKR are therefore not potentially acid generating based on conventional laboratory testing. Monitoring of stagnant pools on the tundra downgradient of the CKRSA has shown that water originating from the pile resembles acid rock drainage (ARD). Water pHs can be less than 4, and sulfate concentrations are typically in the thousands of milligrams per litre. Conventional flowing toe seeps are pH neutral but also have elevated sulfate concentrations. Investigations conducted in the summer of 2002 revealed no evidence of in situ acid generation. Pore water chemistry is probably controlled by oxidation of fine-grained pyrite, neutralisation of acidity by calcium and magnesium carbonates and silicates, and freeze concentration of pore water. The acidity observed in tundra pools downgradient of the CKRSA appears to be a result of leaching and mobilisation of iron under reducing conditions at the CKR-soil contact. Downstream of the CKRSA, reduced iron oxidises and is hydrolysed on contact with the atmosphere causing pH depression. BHPB is applying the findings of this study by constructing facilities containing kimberlite on granite pads. These in turn are placed on frozen ground so that the foundations remain frozen and limits contact of wastes with the acidic soils.

"The Mine Haul Road Optimisation Alliance (HROA) is a unique Australian industry–academia collaboration that has been developed to support mine haul road operators. The alliance integrates industry, end-user service providers and academic research expertise in mine haul road design, construction and operation to identify, quantify, implement and monitor the various equipment, materials and road management strategies and solutions required to drive haulage productivity improvements.Initially, a broad overview of the university–industry collaborative landscape is presented, following which the current situation in the Australian mining sector is reviewed both nationally, and on a country-wide basis internationally. This insight places into context the opportunity that strategic collaborations present, to drive productivity and efficiency in mining, while also delivering innovative technology solutions.Following an overview of the HROA collaborative structure, aims and objectives, it is shown how academia and industry collaborations can deliver a more robust and needs-driven solution to mine haul road design, performance and management, especially where integrated solutions are needed. Critically in this approach, implementation and monitoring data provided by industry and service providers alike form the foundation on which to develop research knowledge and innovation that is more responsive to the end-user requirements, typically represented by ‘early goals’ and practical, implementable solutions.The paper concludes with examples of how the alliance collaborations work in practice to deliver focused mine haul road research outcomes, together with the mechanisms used to ensure industry needs are met through end-user driven research solutions for enhanced operational performance.Citation:Handel, D, Miedecke, J, Thompson, R, Tomicek, E and Tulloch, D, 2016. A regional geochemical exploration programme commenced in July 1983, based upon low-density sampling of lateritic duricrust over parts of the Yilgarn Block of Western Australia. This resulted in recognition of an area significantly anomalous in chalcophile elements that progressively led to the discovery of the Johnston Range gold deposits in 1985. The deposits, on the Barlee 1:250,000 map sheet, occur in four mineralized zones, and production is expected to commence during 1988. The programme leading to the Johnston Range discoveries was a collaborative research/ applications study between the AGE Joint Venture (Greenbushes Ltd., St. Joe Minerals, and from 1985, Sons of Gwalia NL) and the CSIRO Laterite Geochemistry Research Group (Smith, 1987). It built upon a precursor project sponsored by Greenbushes Tin Ltd that commenced in 1980 and arose from an orientation laterite research project in the Greenbushes rare metal pegmatite district (Smith et at., 1987). Both were multi-commodity programmes and included the search for gold deposits. Basic methodologies for sampling and data interpretation have been described by Smith and Perdrix (1983) and Smith et at. (1984). Continuous geochemical coverage of designated parts of greenstone belts was sought using a triangular grid of 3-km or 1-km spacing, depending upon the expected prospectivity of the areas and the size and characteristics of the ore deposit targets. In March 2003, Rio Tinto Coal AustraliaÆs (RTCA) new Hail Creek open cut coal mine commenced operations in the Bowen Basin. Hail Creek is a two-seam strip mining operation utilising two 90 m3 draglines and a fleet of excavators and trucks to remove the overburden. All overburden at Hail Creek is blasted prior to excavation. The mine conducts its own drill and blast operations while engaging Dyno Nobel for the provision of explosives supply and loading truck (bulk explosives vehicle û BEV) services. This arrangement was favoured over outsourcing the entire blasting function to a contractor. Subsequent to a value engineering review, the mine set about developing and implementing a blasting operation that did not rely on the need to store bulk quantities of ammonium nitrate on site. There were advantages identified in doing this, in particular the reduction of capital expenditure required and reduced exposure to a number of recently introduced security requirements. This approach also makes sense operationally. The establishment of reload facilities for the BEV close to the blasting location, where turnaround times are kept to a minimum, increases the productivity of the BEV. For this strategy to be successful the logistics of ammonium nitrate supply into the blasting operations has to be well planned and thoroughly executed. This means a robust planning and forecasting arrangement needs to be established with the supplier and transporters of the ammonium nitrate. To date, 80 million bcm of overburden has been blasted at Hail Creek and each year the quantity of overburden requiring blasting is increasing. The purpose of this paper is to present the findings of a study: evaluating the effectiveness to date of the strategy to conduct blasting operations without ammonium nitrate storage on site, and identifying whether there is a limit to which this strategy can operate after which the introduction of bulk ammonium nitrate storage facilities are necessary.

"This paper details the events leading up to a slope failure that occurred at Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) and the remediation method executed using rope access specialists.n January 2016, KCGM Fimiston Pit experienced a double bench wall failure where approximately 80 000 t of material fell from the wall that blocked access to a ramp and caused minor damage to equipment.The event was triggered by heavy rainfall and occurred along unfavourable eastward dipping structures that lead into weaker shale/porphyry bands, which in turn left more material on the face. A remediation plan was formulated that would allow for the continuation of open pit operations while a full geotechnical assessment of the failure area could be conducted. This was accomplished by means of rope access specialists who abseiled down the wall and blasted off the remaining overhang using a portable drill rig and prepackaged explosives.This paper provides a brief overview of the KCGM operations, how the instability was identified and monitored, details of the failure event, outcomes of the geotechnical assessment and details on the remediation work.Citation:Graf, C and Sullivan, R, 2016. Arsenic is a naturally occurring element in the environment and is toxic to biological systems. Arsenic can exist in the environment in the following redox states, arsenite (+3), arsenate (+5), arsine (-3) and elemental (0) (Oremland and Stolz, 2003). Arsenic is released into the environment by natural and anthropogenic activities such as rock weathering and ore mining, respectively. Such activities result in the release of the soluble inorganic arsenic oxyanions, arsenite and arsenate. The redox state of arsenic in the environment is influenced by a number of factors including, redox potential, pH and microorganisms (Irgolic et al, 1977; Genc-Fuhrman, Tjell and McConchie, 2004). Recently, the ability of microorganisms to influence the cycling of arsenic in the environment has attracted much attention. Microorganisms that can oxidise arsenite and reduce arsenate have been isolated and the mechanisms of arsenic metabolism are currently being investigated. The differences between arsenic resistance and arsenic metabolism are being revealed. The role of microorganisms in the release of arsenic into the environment is of particular importance with arsenic contamination of waters causing the death of millions of people worldwide, due to the consumption of contaminated water (Vasken Aposhian et al, 2003; Islam et al, 2004).

"The increased costs of underground mining have continually challenged engineers to identify opportunities for alternatives to common approaches to underground development. Considerations to the design of horizontal and vertical development at the Dugald River mine targeted inclined raise boring to reduce horizontal development, not only to reduce cost, but to allow development activities to focus on other areas of the mine.The mine plan consists of 50 raise bored ventilation shafts, of which 17 have been mined to date with diameters ranging from 3.1 m to 5 m and lengths from 30 m to 200 m. The expected performance and stability of these shafts has been determined using methodologies proposed by McCracken and Stacey (1989) and further refined by Peck, Coombes and Lee (2011). Actual raise performances have been collated and compared to a database of raise bore performances across Australia as presented by Coombes, Lee and Peck (2011), and form a database of raise bore performance specific to Dugald River.Opportunities to further optimise the mine plan and reduce costs have seen the introduction of large diameter-inclined raise bored ventilation shafts to minimise the required lateral development to connect the ventilation circuits. Large diameter inclined shafts ranging between 3.1 m and 4.5 m in diameter have been successfully mined with dips down to 70°, reducing the cost of lateral development by more than $1 million over the next two years.Both technical and operational challenges were overcome in the mining of large diameter-inclined raise bores, including modification of: existing methodologies of assessing shaft wall stability for inclined raises. These included variations of the McCracken and Stacey method and the utilisation of the modified stability number (N’) previously developed for stope performance (Potvin, 1988). both the collar and toe development profiles, including the general set-up of the raise bore drill rig to reduce the operational risks associated with angled raises.Due to their success, inclined raises have been designed for subsequent stages of the life-of-mine ventilation system at Dugald River. Although the mining of metals was well established by the time of the Roman Empire mining skills did not really advance greatly for many centuries. Miners did not have the scientific knowledge to distinguish minerals, to process them, and to obtain the best recovery. Each mine essentially developed its own methods in isolation, most of them dangerous. However, with the beginning of the industrial revolution in the early 18th century there was a rapid increase in mining activity in Central and Western Europe and an accompanying need to educate professionals in the developing fields of science and technology. There was also a need for specialised schools (for example, Schools of Mines) to accomplish this since the universities of the time, formed as early as the first half of the 12th century, were cloistered institutions, focused on the study of classics, theology and law. The earliest attempts at organised technical education were made in 1702 with the establishment of a School of Mines in Frieberg, Germany (Table 1) to service rich copper mines, and in 1747 with the establishment of a School of Mines in Paris. By this time, the industrial revolution was well under way and other Schools rapidly followed, at Clausthal in the Ruhr region of Germany in 1775; in 1777 at Almanden to service the mercury mines of Spain (later transferred to Madrid); in 1780 at St Petersburg, Russia and at Falun, Sweden in 1819. The academic staff for these new institutions were often trained in the original School at Frieberg.

Concentrating lower and more variable grade ore resources to meet acceptable concentrate quality criteria requires removal of significant amount of gangue minerals. Monitoring plant feed mineralogy and concentrate by on-stream analysis has significant economic benefits in concentrate quality and recovery optimisation. There is a need to develop a sensitive slurry on-line analyser for silica, aluminium, magnesium and other light elements.On-line XRF elemental analysis technology, which is a routine practice in base metal concentrators is not able to measure lighter elements than calcium from slurry. Too much of the X-ray fluorescence signal from lighter elements is absorbed by water. The limitations in the direct measurement of silica and other light elements have restricted its use in some applications. Some light element slurry analysers have been developed based on prompt gamma neutron activation (PGNAA) method but they have not performed up to the expectations. Among the problems of the flotation of sulphides by the thiol collectors is the dependence and varieties of the flotation starting with the time and oxygen contents in the slurry. For sulphides, the flotation stage follows after the electrocatalytic oxidation of the collector with oxygen on the surface of the conductor minerals. The necessity of the oxygen for sulphide flotation (Plaksin and Bessonov, 1957) is in accordance with a corrosion model of a collector surface sorption (Salamy and Nixon, 1954). As Golikov and Nagimyak (1961) showed, the sulphides possess catalytic activity which provides the autoxidation of the xanthates in the sluny to the dixanthogen. This stage can be rather protracted, which limits the speed of the total process. Disulphides constitute important collectors for the sulphide flotation and the optimal degree of the xanthate oxidation is about 20 per cent for different ores (Abramov, 1978) or, following Chanturiya and Nazarova (1977) the surface compositions for various sulphide ores are different and an optimal oxidation degree is variable from five to 25 per cent according to the ore nature. The optimisation of the surface composition is possible by application of the dixanthogens, or by a partial chemical, electrochemical, or catalytic oxidation of xanthates (Desains, 1847; Schall, 1896; Vigdergauz, 1989). According to Rand (1977) and Vigdergauz (1991) sulphides possess different catalytic activities for oxygen electroreduction. In neutral solutions, for example, the following decrease in the order: FeS2 (Fe,Ni)9S8 CuFeS2 FeS; Cu5FeS4 Cu2S; PbS (Vigdergauz, 1991). For the cases of low catalytic activities of the sulphides, the preflotation oxidation of xanthate could be useful to optimise the process kinetics.

Most compact bucket wheel excavators in use are in the small to medium range. Large compact bucket wheel excavators compete directly with con- ventional longer boom excavators which have operational advantages over the large compact. There are, however, situations where the large com- pact excavator is viable. In the development of these large compacts there are a number of technical features to be addressed. In addition the SECV now propose to expand the concept to a large compact bucket wheel excavator with a bridge and loading unit for their Loy Yang Open Cut.

In both laboratory flotation experiments and from analysing the composition of the lead concentrate at the Boliden Tara lead-zinc mine in Ireland, it has been found that F-250 may replace cyanide as a pyrite depressant. Replacement or reduction of the cyanide consumption is highly desirable from a safety perspective given the toxicity of cyanide. Scrutiny of results from the plant trial indicate that F-250 is less efficient as a cyanide depressant when the flotation feed contains high levels of pyrite. Statistical analysis of the results does not capture this trend, illustrating a need to collect more data at higher pyrite ore levels. A recent model proposed for biopolymer-induced pyrite depression is reviewed and discussed next to the suggested mechanism for pyrite depression via cyanide. Review of the interactions causing pyrite depression point to different manners in achieving depression. In light of the less efficient F-250 pyrite depression at high pyrite levels, it is speculated if the two depressants may act synergistically at high levels of pyrite in the feed. Variety among deserts is nearly as great as among other climatic environments. Common to most deserts, and to areas downwind from them, is the dominance of aeolian transport of surface material, at least during some seasons of the year. The result is dilution of local surface materials with varying proportions of chemically uniform fine sand and silt, often imported by the wind from remote areas. Fortunately, desert pavement,.even though separated from bedrock by a meter or more of nearly pure loess, is simply a diluted reflection of nearby bedrock. Infiltration of loess through the surface debris and the rudimentary soil-forming processes in the desert usually preserve the integrity of the pavement. This pavement, or its "downstream" derivatives, provides a suitable sample for exploration geochemistry if proper care is taken to circumvent the aeolian dilution. The simplest and most commonly used method of circumventing the dilution is to use a coarse fraction of soils or stream sediments, discarding or retaining the finer fraction depending upon the magnitude of the dilution. Where the coarse surface debris is composed of rock chips representative of the bedrock sources, the method is successful. Under most circumstances the coarse fraction of the surface material will give a fair representation of gross lithology and will occasionally give an indication of mineral- ization. The major drawback to this approach is that selective weathering and erosion in the vicinity of mineral deposits often lead to the loss of ore minerals into the finer fraction, leaving a coarse residue enriched in feldspar and particularly in quartz; thus, the geochemical signature from a mineral deposit is effectively reduced or completely masked. The second most commonly used method to overcome aeolian dilution, and probably the most effective at present, is to use a heavy- mineral concentrate. Acidic reductive leaching is one of the best known and most widely employed chemical processes for beneficiating minerals of industrial interest. Conventional acidic leaching with sodium dithionite (Na2S2O4), employed to bleach industrial minerals used in the production of ceramics, glassware, paper etc, does not always allow products of high quality to be obtained. In the work reported here two reducing agents, ascorbic acid and oxalic acid, have been employed in a medium acidified by means of sulphuric acid. Continuous systematic tests have been performed on a kaolin sample containing 0.8 per cent Fe2O3, adopting various operating parameters such as, leaching time, temperature and reagent concentration. In each case the total quantity of bi- and trivalent iron dissolved was ascertained. Removal of 80 per cent and 100 per cent of iron with ascorbic and oxalic acid respectively was obtained, while less than one per cent of iron was dissolved in the presence of sulphuric acid only. Products having a very good degree of whiteness (92 - 94 per cent) were obtained, whereas with sodium dithionite the degree of whiteness was in the 85 to 88 per cent range. The best conditions identified were applied to a sample of quartz for the removal of ferric impurities.

The Mt Wright Project is located near the town of Ravenswood in North Queensland and is operated by Carpentaria Gold – a wholly owned subsidiary of Resolute Mining Limited. Underground Development of the current Mt Wright orebody commenced in June 2006 and the first production ore was brought to surface in June 2007. The orebody is a rhyolite pipe containing fine-grained disseminated gold in a granite host rock. Ground conditions tend to be good to excellent throughout development, with some minor deformation experienced when stope-sized excavations are formed. The mine commenced as a sublevel open stoping (SLOS) operation with the intent to utilise development waste to back fill isolated upper level stopes while developing to the bottom of the known orebody. The mine plan intended to commence production with a bottom-up primary/secondary stoping retreat through the main orebody utilising cemented fill. Some challenges were faced during the initial production phase that included:•Ongoing underground diamond drilling and updating of the block model resulted in some issues reconciling the grade control results to the resource model. This was primarily due to the high variability of grade which in turn caused difficulties in accurately identifying areas of low and high-grade.•The cost of establishing and operating a cemented fill plant to achieve the planned extraction sequence of the orebody had increased significantly beyond initial estimations.•Geotechnical conditions such as stress orientations, ground behavior and response to the forming of excavations learned through the mining of the upper level stopes were different to the assumptions made during the initial design.A number of in-house and external reviews of the mining method were completed which has resulted in a revised mining plan. This paper will summarise the challenges faced and the implementation of the mine plan to date.

Pressure leaching of a bulk flotation concentrate prepared from a complex Cu-Pb-Zn sulphide ore was carried out at 150 and 190¦C under 1050 kPa oxygen overpressure in 1 L and 4 L titanium autoclaves to extract zinc, and to obtain residues for smelting tests and leach liquors for purification and recovery of the zinc by electrowinning. Dissolution of 95% of the zinc was achieved at both temperatures. Copper and iron dissolution and the degree of oxidation of the sulphide sulphur to elemental sulphur or sulphate depended on the temperature of the leach. At 190¦C, a jarosite (a basic iron sulphate) was the major iron-containing material in a residue that contained 17% total sulphur. Its formation was associated with dissolution of 18% of the iron. At 150¦C, oxidation of the sulphide sulphur and dissolution of the iron were significantly less. Only 7% of the iron was dissolved and a residue containing 25% total sulphur, present as a lead jarosite, lead sulphate, and elemental sulphur, was obtained. The formation of small pellets of unreacted sulphides coated with elemental sulphur caused problems during the leaching at 150¦C, and also during scale-up from the 1 L to the 4 L autoclave at 190¦C. At 150¦C the concentrate required two stages of leaching to achieve dissolution of over 90% of the zinc. These problems are discussed.

During the Palaeoproterozoic, a large number of granitic intrusions were emplaced in the various parts of the Pine Creek Geosyncline (PCG). In the central region, the granitic magmatism is represented either by the coalesced mass, eg the Cullen Batholith, or individual plutons such as the Mount Bundey Granite which together with the Mount Goyder Syenite intrude the metasedimentary strata, causing wide spread contact aureoles. Some of these granitic intrusions are temporally and genetically related to gold (and less commonly base-metals) mineralisation present in the adjacent metasediments. These plutons are characterised by the presence of biotite and homblende which appear late in the paragenetic sequence. Electron microprobe analyses of biotite and homblende show that these minerals are poorly to moderately zoned. Biotites are characterised by a decrease in Fe/(Fe + Mg) ratios when plotted against AIVI. Similarly a modest decrease in Ti from centre to the margins of the biotite crystals has also been observed. Furthermore, an increase in Mg/(Mg + EFe) ratios from centre to the margins as well as in mafic to felsic rocks is also apparent. On the other hand, homblendes from the granitic bodies display less well marked trends and are poorly zoned. However, they show systematic increases in Mg/(Mg + EFe) ratios, and decreases in Fe, Al"' and Fe/(Fe + Mg) ratios, when plotted against Si. Magnetic susceptibility measurements on powdered samples of the plutons give results characterised by high values ranging from 0.8 x 10-4 to 2.0 x 10-3 emu/g which place the granites in magnetite- series field. This indicates that the oxidation state of the magma was high during crystallisation. The range of chemical compositions of the mafic phases indicates a rise in the oxidation state of the magma as it progressively became saturated in H20-volatiles and other metals, not partitioned into the earlier crystallised phases in the final stages of magma consolidation. These variations in chemical compositions also indicate that initially fOz was high and became progressively higher during fractional crystallisation of magmas; this subsequently led to the emanation of hydrothermal fluids responsible for the mineralisation in the adjacent metasediments.

Stratabound/stratiform and remobilised mineralisation have been recognised as the two dominant styles of mineralisation which constitute the Broken Hill ore deposit. Recognition of prospective sites for accumulation of ore depends on understanding the heterogeneity of the ore environment and the distribution of the two styles of mineralisation. The internal stratigraphy of the Broken Hill ore deposit and its enveloping rocks, is described, and a generalised stratigraphic setting of the stratiform mineralisation is outlined. Fhiphasis is placed on the existence of closely-spaced sub-basins as potential sites for ore accumulation close to the Broken Hill ore deposit.
