A quarter of a century of service of steel rails on our oldest railroads, many of which have changed their standard sections three or four times, has furnished, and is furnishing, excellent opportunities to study their wear and behavior in the track. Such experience is valuable for the design of new sections, now required to meet the constantly increasing severity of railroad service. Before presenting the new sections for consideration, I will briefly call attention to some features of past experience. For convenience of study, rails may be separated according to their weight and height into four groups, viz.: 1. Hails weighing per yard from 52 to 60 pounds, and 34 to 4 inches high. 2. " " " " " 60 " 72 " " 46 to 44 " " 3. " " " " " 72 " 90 ' 41/8 to 5 4. " " " " " 85 or more " " over 5 " I Experience in this country is confined mainly to sections in groups Nos. 1, 2 and 3. • During the past few years I have had the opportunity to run my car over many thousands of miles of railway laid with the principal sections in use, and to obtain diagrams showing their deflections, permanent set, and, in a great measure, their manner of wear. The First Group.—The first steel rails imported, and those manufactured here, were light sections—included in the first group—and many of them, being rolled in rolls used for rolling iron sections, have pear-shaped heads, 2 3/8 to 2 1/2 inches wide, the base being heavy and from 1/4 to 1/2 inch narrower than the height. These rails were laid upon ties of solid timber, at least 8 inches face, spaced 2 feet from center to center. The moments of inertia of these rails were low, only ranging from 8 for the lightest sections to 12 for the heaviest. 9.3-1. Introduction. The demands of industry for handling materials at higher rates and at reduced costs have had a very significant effect on belt conveyor technology. Although the general appearance of the belt conveyor today is essentially the same as it has been for the past several decades, the similarity ends there. Each component comprising the conveyor system has been continuously improved through design and materials technology to enable present conveyor systems to operate at ever-increasing rates and reliability. For example, twenty years ago the strongest commercially available, fabric-reinforced conveyor belting had a tension rating of 50 lb per ply-in. Currently, fabric-reinforced belts are available with ratings of 350 lb per ply-in. and steel cable reinforced belting is available with tension ratings of 3000 lb per in. of belt width (3). These technological advances have therefore enabled the belt conveyor to not only attain acceptance as a preferred method for in-plant movement of bulk materials, but also to be used for long distance transportation of bulk materials, particularly in areas of adverse terrain. The information contained in this chapter is intended to assist the reader to make basic decisions regarding the use and application of a conveyor system. The design of an overland conveyor transportation system or an in-plant process conveyor is accordingly beyond the scope of this article. Many comprehensive technical works covering the design of a belt conveyor are currently available from the manufacturers of materials handling equipment (6, 7, 9, 11). The design handbook published by the Conveyor Equipment Manufacturers Association is particularly recommended (2). 9.3-2. Conveyor Capacities. One of the most important factors in determining the proper size of a conveyor system is the rate at which material must be handled. The term "slime-coating" is not new in the art of flotation; the phenomenon has been observed and described by Taggart;(l)† Taggart, Taylor, and Ince;(2) and by Ince.(3) Notwithstanding that flotation was introduced for the treatment of finely crushed ore, the adverse effects of slimes have been recognized since the earliest days of the process, and the Elmore, Delprat, Potter, and other processes actually specified desliming of the ore prior to treatment. The cause of this trouble has been studied and described by Taggart;(1) Taggart, Taylor, and Ince;(2) Ince;(3) Morrow and Griswold;(4) and by Gaudin and Malozemoff.(5) Old Theory of Slime-coatings At present, so far as published work shows, there seems to be but one theory for the mechanism of slime-coatings. Ince(3) states that they are due to attraction between electrostatic charges of opposite sign on the sulfide and on the slime particles, supporting this theory by migration experiments in the Burton tube. He also used the microscope in conjunction with a glass cell employed by Beans and Eastlack(6) in studying migration, but met with interference from endosmosis. Several attempts have been made in the Department of Mineral Dressing at Columbia University to duplicate Ince's experiments with the Burton tube, but the results have never been convincing. Formation of precipitates which settled through the pulp levels, and evolution of gas at the electrodes, which disturbed the interface between the pulp and the distilled water above it, seriously interfered with observations. However, by use of the migration cell shown in Fig. 1, endosmosis effects and the disturbances due to precipitation and gas evolution were avoided, and distinct and reproducible migrations or absence of migration were observed. The cell was made of bakelite and had platinum electrodes. In developing a consistent picture of the thermal expansion of the commercial chromium steels, which cover a range of carbon contents, it is desirable to know the expansion in the limiting case of the binary, carbon-free, iron-chromium alloys. We have, therefore, determined the thermal expansion of a series of five special alloys, ranging in chromium content from 3 to 10.5 per cent, with not more than 0.03 per cent carbon, over a temperature range extending beyond the transformation region; this low carbon content enables us to draw reasonably reliable conclusions as to the behavior of the carbon-free system. Moreover, the measurements serve to determine the beginning and the end of the alpha-gamma transformation; and they emphasize once more the fact that a transformation temperature determined by any method in which the specimen is cooled at an appreciable rate is apt to be seriously in error, particularly if the metal contains a transformation-retarding element such as chromium or managanese. The lag, or undercooling, observed at the ? — a transformation is explained in terms of the influence of temperature on transformation velocity; the rather unusual shape of the ? loop is attributed to a change with temperature and with composition of the distribution of chromium between the alpha-iron and gamma-iron solid solutions. The exact composition of the alloys, which were obtained through the courtesy of Dr. W. Rohn, of the Heraeus Vakuumschmelze A-G., is given in Table 1. Determinations of the linear thermal expansion and of transformation temperature were carried out in the vacuum dila-tometer previously described,' using a rate of heating and of cooling of 3.0" to 3.5" per minute unless otherwise stated. SINCE the outbreak of the war we have discovered in the United States minerals of which there was no general knowledge, and which compared very favorably with anything that could be found in any foreign country. One of these was magnesite, or the carbonate of magnesium as it occurs in nature. This mineral crystallizes in the rhombohedral form, has a specific gravity of 3.00, molecular weight of 84 4, molecular volume of 28.1, and a hardness of 3.5 to 4.5.1 Had it not been for the development of the California deposits of this mineral and the discovery of immense new deposits in Stevens County, Wash., the production of steel during the war would have been more seriously handicapped than it was. Now, that the war is over, we face the possibility of competition' with the cheap Austro-Hungarian magnesite; and while that may not he so cheap as it was before the war, adequate protection should be given the producers in this country to insure the full development of our own resources. The consumption of magnesite in the United States in 1913, the year preceding the war, was 172,591 tons of calcined and 22,872 tons of crude magnesite. Less than 3 per cent. of this amount was produced at home. At the present time, practically all of the magnesite used in the United States is produced at home. Expensive plants have been constructed, extensive exploration work done, and production pushed to the utmost to supply the necessary requirements of the war. Thus a considerable industry has been built up within our borders. Some magnesite has been imported from Canada and Mexico, but the Canadian ore was of an inferior grade and could not be used satisfactorily. During the year 1918, production decreased in both the United States and Canada; the production in the United States was 225,000 tons in 1918 as against 315,000 in 1917, and in Canada 39,365 tons in 1918 as against 58,090 in 1917.

IN 1877 the Pennsylvania Railroad Company removed an old bridge from its line at Duncannon, Pa., built intermediate piers and erected shorter spans of the Pratt truss type, which had previously been in use on another portion of the road. The design of this truss would not admit of diagonals larger than 1 5/8 inches diameter, and in order to stiffen the bridge somewhat steel rods were introduced for the main diagonals in the first and second panels, 1 5/8 inches and 1 3/8 inches diameter respectively. These rods were threaded without upsetting, and by the ordinary formulae the strains were of the same intensity upon both, viz., 16,000 pounds per square inch with the maximum loading. The other main diagonals in the truss are 1 5/8 inches diameter, and of iron. It was specified for the steel rods : Elastic limit, - 45,000 lbs. Tensile strength, - 80,000 lbs. Elongation, - 20 per cent. The steel was procured without difficulty, and it allowed a factor of safety of 2 3/4 at elastic limit, while a similar factor of 2 1/2 had for a long time been successfully used for iron. In the course of three years, from time to time, six of these steel rods broke, three of them being 1 3/8 inches in diameter, and three 1 5/8 inches in. diameter. The broken rods were tested, and three of them. analyzed at Altoona to ascertain the cause of failure, and what modi¬fications should be made in the steel for such service. Examination showed that all the rods were broken in detail close under the nut. The threads were well cut and properly rounded at the root. In testing the rods micrometer screws,. reading to .0001" with electric bell to signal the contact, were attached to the test pieces, and by this means the modulus of elasticity and elastic limit accurately obtained.

This note describes positive evidence that hydrogen in titanium alloys diffuses under the influence of a thermal gradient. The experiments confirmed the expected similarity of this system to the H-Zr system and produced qualitative information on the magnitude of the heat of transport for hydrogen in titanium alloys. This effect has practical importance in applications where titanium alloys operate in a thermal gradient under conditions such that hydrogen embrittlement may develop within the expected lifetime of the structure, for example in supersonic aircraft service. The theories of thermal-gradient diffusion may be found in recent reviews and experimentation in this field by Shewmon,1 Sawatzky,2 Markowitz,3 and Darken and Oriani.4 The basis for Soret thermal diffusion is the "heat of transport", denoted by Q*. This is an energy term for the amount of heat (energy) transferred by atomic diffusion, and can be either positive or negative signifying a driving force for atomic diffusion to the cooler or hotter region, respectively. Experimentally, Q* is determined by plotting the natural logarithm of the point-to-point concentrations after exposure to a thermal gradient vs the respective point-to-point temperatures in units of the inverse absolute temperature scale. The slope of the straight line is Q*/R, R being the gas constant. For the titanium experiments, specimens (3 by 1 by 1/16 in.) of a) commercially pure titanium, b) the 8 Al-1 Mo-1 V titanium alloy, and c) the 6 A1-4 V titanium alloy were exposed to thermal gradients of 6° to 115°C per in. for 18 days at 250° to 550°C. The temperature gradient was in the direction of the 3-in. dimension. The hydrogen concentrations existing after exposure were determined on sections of the specimens by vacuum extraction. During 1932 the oil industry persistently endeavored to maintain a rate of production that would permit a profitable price structure. Much effort was concentrated on curtailment of both production and drilling. The tendency in curtailment was to shut in reserves where closely held and not subjected to drainage, and to allow town-lot fields such as Long Beach, Santa Fe Springs, Playa Del Rey and Huntington Beach a greater percentage of allotment. Marginal wells were given special consideration; only a small percentage of curtailment wag required, making their operations profitable. Naturally the decline in production of town-lot fields, under slight curtailment, is very rapid, hence production that is restricted in fields controlled by major interests at the present time will profit considerably in the future, as California reserves do not appear adequate to sustain heavy withdrawals over a long period of time. California production during 1932 was much greater than additions to reserves during the year. The state produced 10,701,238 bbl. of crude oil less in 1932 than in 1931, while total stocks (all petroleum commodities) decreased 1,589,524 bbl. Had all operators kept strictly within their allotted 'production, the total crude production decline would have been approximately 20,000,000 bbl. and total stock decrease 3,000,000 barrels. Estimated proven oil reserves for California were 3,965,000,000 bbl. on Jan. 1, 1932, as compared with 3,784,120,000 bbl. as of Jan. 1, 1933, a decrease of 180,880,000 barrels. Approximately 85 per cent of the 178,127,794 bbl. of oil produced during 1932 was withdrawn from old reserves in settled fields and the remaining 15 per cent from new sources such as Kettleman Hills North Dome, Belridge, San Miguelito and Dominguez deep zone. The oil reserves of Kettleman Hills North Dome are estimated to be approximately 50 per cent of the total oil reserves, of California and they may be drawn upon at a much greater rate than the remainder of the state's oil fields.

It is well known that manganese will desulfurize molten iron through the formation of manganese sulfide, which, being only slightly soluble in the metal, rises to and enters the slag where it remains as such (mixer slag) or is converted partly or wholly to calcium sulfide (basic open-hearth slag). The reaction by which manganese sulfide is formed is Mn + FeS = MnS + Fe. This reaction is generally considered to be reversible, although McCancel states that such is not the case. The experimental work was carried out to confirm the results of Roh12 as to the reversibility of the reaction. Six trials are herein considered. In each 200 gm. of electrolytic iron free from manganese and sulfur were melted in a pure zirconia crucible in a carbon resistance electric furnace. To the melted iron in runs 2, 3 and 4 metallic manganese and manganese sulfide were added to give 1, 2 and 4 per cent. manganese respectively, with 0.50 per cent, of sulfur in each. In runs 5, 6 and 7, metallic manganese and iron sulfide to give the same proportions of. manganese and sulphur as in runs 2, 3 and 4, were added. The melts were held molten in the furnace for an hour and then cast into small ingots. The results of these melts are as follows: Ingredients of Charge Analysis or InRot ManOaneBe, SulfUR, ManOaneBe. In shaft sinking for cod mines, the cost item greatly influences the method adopted. This holds true especially when soft material must be traversed. The average life of a coal mine is short. This is due either to the limited area of the coal basin or to the great expense of maintenance and haulage underground when the entries are extended a considerable distance from the hoisting shaft. Therefore, the engineer in opening a coal mine is confronted with the fact that the cost must be kept within certain bounds else the venture will prove unprofitable. For this reason he may be prohibited from adopting certain safe, but expensive, methods that are used in sinking caissons for foundations, driving transportation tunnels, or other work of permanent construction. A common method of sinking through difficult ground employs the aid of a steel shoe pushed ahead of the shaft timbers. Another is the drop-shaft method. These two methods were used in sinking the main shaft and the air shaft of the Eagle No. 3 mine, at Des Moines, Ia., and the following data show the relative success and cost of the two methods of sinking under the same conditions. THE vapor phase deposition of molybdenum and tungsten from the hexacarbonyls has been thoroughly investigated by Lander and Germer1 and shown to yield well-bonded coatings on a variety of hot metallic surfaces. They also demonstrated that chromium coatings2.3 could be similarly deposited, but did not investigate this metal extensively. Recently,4 conditions have been described by which this compound can be prepared in quantities sufficient for laboratory scale plating experiments, and it is the purpose of the present communication to outline the results of preliminary experiments upon the plating of chromium from its carbonyl. APPARATUS AND TECHNIQUE The apparatus used in these experiments is shown in Fig I. At one end, connected by a short length of rubber tubing, is a Cenco Hypervac 20 pumping continuously. At the opposite end is a needle valve which allows a small stream of purified hydrogen to flow through the apparatus. Connected in series are a trap T1, maintained at the temperature of dry ice and acetone, the plating chamber, and two traps T2 and T3 containing crystals of the carbonyl. T2 is kept in a constant temperature bath (not shown), while T3 is at room temperature. Stopcock S6 allows the hydrogen flow to by-pass the carbonyl traps. A McLeod gauge is connected so that it can measure the pressure at the pump through Ss, or the pressure at the plating chamber through S9 and S6. The standard (12 liter) volume connected by S5 is used to determine the volume included by S4, S6, Se, S10, the needle valve and the McLeod gauge. Knowledge of this volume allows calibration of the flow of hydrogen. The apparatus* is built entirely of pyrex, except for the needle valve, the rubber connection to the Hypervac, and the cover of the plating chamber. The plating chamber is water-jacketed, with a large brass top allowing insertion of the specimen to be plated. Set into the brass top is a ground glass stopper through which thermocouple leads are sealed. The thermocouple wires (pure Pt, and 87 pct Pt-13 pct Rh) serve the double purpose of measuring the specimen temperature and suspending it in the chamber. Surrounding the chamber is the coil of an induction heater, H. The apparatus is designed to allow variation of the following conditions: I, the specimen temperature, from room temperature to about 1000°C, 2, the carbonyl vapor pressure, from 40 to 220 microns, and 3, the hydrogen flow. Therrnal resistance is measured on GaAs laser diodes in the temperature range 77" to 300°K. These data show that typically the thermal resistance increases fifteen times from 77 to 300°K. The increase is attributed to the decrease in thermal conductivity of Gds. Nornzalized thermal-resistance experimental and calculated from published thermal-conductivity data) values are compared and good agreement shown. In many practical applications, it is desirable to obtain high average power output from laser diodes. Average power output is determined in large measure by the external efficiency and thermal resistance of the diode.'-3 The average input power with which a laser diode may be pumped is dependent on the thermal resistance. Thermal resistance has been studied over the temperature range from 77" to 300°K which is usually of interest in practical applications. This correspondence presents data on thermal resistance for GaAs laser diodes and compares them to values calculated from thermal-conductivity data. Junction heating arises from three distinct components: 1) joule heating, 2) nonradiative recombinations, and 3) reabsorption of radiation. In high-threshold lasers, joule heating predominates.4 Typically, the nonradiative recombination is not negligible and contributes significantly to junction heating. The loss caused by reabsorption may be of the order of the joule-heating loss.' The fabrication and the geometry of laser diodes have been described in other publications.5 The data presented were obtained from diodes which were fabricated from the same region of a wafer to minimize differences. Fig. 1 shows four types of heat sinks employed in this study. In types 1 and 2, the laser cavities are alloyed; pressure contacts are employed in types 3 and 4, and indium is plated on the inside faces to improve the intimacy of contact between the diode and the heat sink. The thermal resistance R is defined by the following relationship: where AT is the junction-temperature rise above the heat-sink temperature for the diode power dissipation Pd. For measurement of thermal resistance, a direct current is passed through the junction, in the range from 1 to 50 pct of threshold. The diode is placed in the laser mode by superimposing a current pulse of low-duty cycle on the direct current.3 Junction-temperature rise is obtained from the time-resolved laser spectrum at the leading edge of the current pulse.' Typically, the laser line shift is 2.5A per OK. The resolution employed in these experiments is 0.5A; therefore, the accuracy in the temperature measurement is 0.2K. Typically, the temperature rise is 2" to 20°K. The power dissipation is the difference between the dc power input, and the radiation power exiting the diode. The measurement accuracy is less than 1

Concentration of fine quartz particles at the iso-octane/water interface has been investigated under different conditions of pH and dodecylamine concentration. The results obtained from the related studies on the effect of amine concentration and pH on the interfacial tension, adsorption density, electrokinetic potential, contact angle, and concentration of the various amine species in the system are presented. A good correlation was obtained between these different variables. It is well-known that very fine mineral particles are difficult to float in conventional flotation machines. Flotation rate studies have revealed that the rate of flotation of fine mineral particles is much smaller than that of coarser size fractions. The theories accounting for this behavior have been discussed by Arbiter and Harris1 and also Meloy.2 Theoretically, a hydrophobic fine particle might never make contact with a bubble because of the presence of an energy barrier in the vicinity of the air/water interface.' This energy barrier will have electrostatic, hydrodynamic, and Van der Waals force components. It was thought that by using an oil phase instead of air the energy barrier would be decreased so that fine particles could be concentrated at the oil/water interface more readily than at the air/water interface. The technique used involves dispersing the fine particles in water, containing the appropriate chemical reagents, and injecting a fine dispersion of iso-octane oil droplets into the pulp. After vigorous conditioning, the pulp is passed into a separating column where the oil droplets coated with a layer of mineral particles rise to the surface to form a separate layer. Air is introduced into the base of the separating column to ensure that heavy agglomerates of oil and particles report with the organic layer. This technique has been described previously4 and adopted by Lai and Fuerstenau5 who studied the alumina-dodecyl sulfonate system. The interfacial phenomena in the system composed of hematite, water, and iso-octane in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate have been studied and the results reported" earlier. This paper describes the results obtained from investigations into the interfacial phenomena in the quartz/water/iso-octane system in the presence of dodecylamine. The technique used in measuring the interfacial tension, electrokinetic potential, contact angle, and adsorption density were similar to those described previously? Materials Selected pieces of a high purity natural quartz, from the Isle of Man, were crushed in a laboratory jaw crusher and pulverizer. The — 52+72 mesh size fraction was retained and leached with successive washes of hot concentrated hydrochloric acid to remove iron impurities. When no iron was detected in the solution by ammonium thiocyanate, the quartz was washed thoroughly with distilled water until the conductivity of the wash water assumed that of the distilled water. Samples of 25 g of the —52+72 mesh quartz were ground for 5.25 min in an agate vibratory mill. The ground product was 100% —44 m and 57% —10 am, as determined by the Andreasen pipette. The specific surface area of the sample used for the adsorption and flotation tests was 0.94 sq m g-l. This corresponds to a mean particle diameter of 2.4 am. The —44 am quartz sample was stored under vacuum in the presence of silica gel crystals. For the contact angle determination between the three phases, quartz, iso-octane, and water, a piece of the natural quartz was ground into a block about 15 mm long, 15 mm wide, and 5 mm thick. One surface of the block was then polished by successively finer grades of silicon carbide "paper." The final polishing was conducted with alumina on a "hyprocel" paper. The shaft of the Raven mine, at Butte, Mont., is an incline 1,700 ft. in length and dipping at various angles. At the top the dip is 70" from the horizontal, but this is gradually flattened until at the 300-ft. level the inclination is only 47. This angle continues to the 1,100-ft. level, below which it curves with a 125-ft. radius to 78". In addition to these variations in dip, the shaft does not lie in the same vertical plane, with the result that the hoisting rope not only rubs at intervals on both the hanging and foot walls, but presses strongly against the west dividers near the collar, while 300 ft. below it runs close to the east end plates. The early operators used no idlers, aid wall plates cut 6 in. deep by the rope resulted. Later operators first attempted to overcome the excessive friction, and the wear of rope and wall plates, by introducing solid cast-iron idlers, 3 in. in diameter. To allow for the travel of the rope from side to side some of these had to be 3 ft. long and were very heavy. Judging from the appearance of the old idlers of this type found at the mine, they often failed to turn in the bearings, which is not surprising when it is considered that they would have to make 1,000 rev. a minute under ordinary hoisting conditions. The next rolls were made of wood, 6 in. in diameter, with an iron band about each end, and a pintle of 1-in. round steel driven in at the ends to serve as a shaft. These wore rapidly, and were soon replaced by rolls made from water pipe, 5 or 6 in. in diameter, cut to the desired length and fitted with a wooden cylinder into which the pintle was driven. Where the idlers were used on the hanging wall of the shaft the original bearing was simply a piece of + by 1 3/2 in. strap iron, 10 in. long, turned up at the end in a circle 11/8 in. in diameter to receive the shaft. A small hole served for oiling, and common black oil was generally used, although filtered oil from engine bearings and compressor bearings was also used. When the rolls were to be placed on the foot wall the bearings were made from two pieces of 1 by 3 in. steel, 6 in. long. A half circle was cut on the flat side of each piece and the two half circles together formed a bearing. Oil holes were provided, and in some cases holes were bored through the two pieces so that they could be screwed or spiked to the wall plates.

The orientation relationships resulting from allotropic transformations and the formation of segregate structures in metals and alloys have been the subject of the eight earlier papers in this series'. A brief summary of orientation studies has also been given by Sachs2. A survey of these papers discloses that the factors that determine the orientation relationship of a precipitated phase to its parent solid solution, as well as the outward form and appearance of the new phase, are not completely understood. It is now evident that crystallographically analogous systems, as a rule, exhibit the same type of Widmanstatten figure and orientation relations, so that useful information is not to be expected from examination of a new alloy involving lattice combinations of which the orientation relationships are already known. Therefore, the determination of the relations existing between lattice types that have not already been studied seems to be the most promising mode of attack upon the problem; both of the systems reported in this paper represent new combinations of lattice types. A. The Mg-Mg2Sn System The magnesium-tin equilibrium diagram given by Hansen3 shows the phase Mg2Sn to be the only intermediate phase. The solid solubility of Sn in Mg decreases from 14.8 weight per cent at the eutectic temperature, 561' C., to 2.3 per cent at 450°, while no solid solubility of Mg in Mg2Sn has been observed. The crystal structur: of Mg is close-packed hexagonal with a0 = 3.202 A. and co = 5.199 A.4, while Mg2Sn is of the CaF2 type with a. = 6.78 A., with four molecules in a unit ce115,6. Alloys from two different sources have been used: (1) those supplied by the Dow Chemical Co., which contain 6 and 8 weight per cent Sn, and (2) those prepared in this laboratory, containing 8 and 13.5 per cent Sn. The carbon content of a number of alloys ranging (before carburitation) from purified iron to purified cobalt was determined for fixed activities of carbon by equilibration with each of six CO-CO2 atmosphere at 1000°C. At fixed carbon activity, the carbon content decreases continuously with increasing cobalt content. For concentrations of 0 to 50 at. pct Co the results can be expressed by a linear interaction equation of the type In y2 = 7.76n2/(n1+n3)+ 2.30 n3/(n1+n3) where y2 is the activity coefficient of carbon (standard state such that y2— 1 as n2 — 0 in the Fe-C binary) and n1, n2, and n3 are the number of atoms of iron, carbon, and cobalt per unit weight of alloy. The results are also given in terms of the a functions. In the same concentration range, the results are in accord with the regular solution theory of Alcock and Richardson. THE carbon content of Fe-Si, Fe-Mn, and Fe-Ni alloys at fixed activities of carbon has been reported previously.'-, The present work extends R. P. SMITH, Member AIME, is Research Chemist, E. C. Bain Laboratory for Fundamental Research, United States Steel Corp., Research Center, Monroeville, Pa. these measurements to a series of Fe-Co alloys. These alloys, like the Fe-Ni alloys, are fcc ("aus-tenitic") over the entire range of composition at 1000°C. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloys were made from electrolytic cobalt and Plast-Iron in a small vacuum-melting furnace. A small amount of graphite was added to each melt to keep the oxygen content low. The ingots were analyzed for iron and carbon: the amount of cobalt was obtained by difference. Analysis of the top and bottom of the ingots indicated that they were uniform in alloy content. Except for the pure cobalt the ingots were hot-rolled to approximately 0.15 cm thickness, cleaned by sandblasting, then cold-rolled to about 0.045 cm. We were not successful in cold rolling the pure cobalt; therefore it was hot-rolled to the final thickness. The last traces of surface oxide were removed by acid pickel, then the samples were treated in a hydrogen-2 pct water vapor mixture at 1100°C to remove carbon and most of the oxygen. The carburizing procedure was similar to that previously described.1,2,4 The alloys in the form of strips about 1.7 cm wide, 7.5 cm long, and 0.04 cm thick, together with a similar specimen of purified iron, were equilibrated with each of six CO-CO2 mixtures of fixed composition, then quenched in the

Instantaneous resistance change during martensitic transformation in Fe-30 at. pct Ni alloy has been studied using a low-noise electronic system. The smallest signals recorded in this investigation were of the order of 10 pv. These small signals did not show the initial increase reported by earlier investigators to support a double shear mechanism.&apos; A variety of pulse shapes and sizes was observed during "burst" transformations, and these signals were neither a linear function of the size of martensite plates nor of the volume fraction transformed. Even the smallest signals, presumably from single plates, showed complications resulting from elastic and/or plastic deformation, shock wave propagation, and so forth, which are inherent in the growth process of a martensite plate. The time of formation and interface velocity determined froni this experiment agree very well with the pioneering work of Bunshalz and Mehl.&apos; AN Fe-30 at. pct Ni (c0.005 pct C) alloy was used to study the time of formation of martensite plates. Martensitic transformations, unlike the nucleation and growth processes, are usually characterized by an extremely fast reaction rate. During the transformation, the crystal structure changes and this change is propagated through a finite volume of the parent crystal lattice within a very short time interval. The interface between the two phases probably consists of moving dislocations, and the time of formation of the plate depends on how fast this dislocation interface can move. Knapp and Dehlin~er or Cottrell and Bilby mechanisms, or similar dislocation models, can be used to calculate the time of formation of a martensite plate of a given size. In the past, conventional photographic technique475 as well as electrical resistivity techniques"~-" have been used to measure the time of formation of a martensite plate. The specific resistance of the martensitic phase in Fe-30 at. pct Ni alloy is lower than that of the austenite phase. Therefore if a current is passed through a small austenite sample in series with a large external resistance, then one would observe a voltage change across the sample as martensite is formed. Such dc measurements are shown in Fig. 1. The initial large voltage drop in Fig. 1, at the M, temperature, is due to a "burst" transformation where a large number of plates are formed in a cataclysmic manner within a very short interval of time. Even during the later stages of transformation as shown in Fig. 1, one can observe discontinuous voltage changes due to small bursts. In order to resolve the time scale of such discontinuous stages, the voltage signals are amplified and fed into a highspeed oscilloscope. In this investigation a low-noise amplifier was used for the first stage of amplification. The signal to noise ratio was further improved by the design of a pulse transformer. This transformer was capable of amplifying the signal by a factor of six. Voltage signals were studied over a wide time scale ranging from 2 sec to 0.1 psec. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A) Specimen Preparation. Specimens were cut from induction-melted Fe-30 at. pct Ni (<0.005C) alloy and cold-rolled to 0.2 by 1 mm cross section and an average length of 5 cm. During mechanical shaping, the specimens were strain-annealed at 950°C for 24 hr in vacuum. Finally the finished samples were vacuum-annealed at 1000°C for 6 hr and water-quenched to room temperature. The average grain diameter was 0.02 cm. B) Cooling System. The M, temperature of the alloy was -55°C. Fig. 2 shows the arrangement which was used to cool the specimen at a slow rate. The specimens were mounted inside a i -in.-diam hole in the 2-in.-long section of the copper specimen holder. This cavity was filled with silica gel. INTRODUCTION The selection of mass mining methods is the situation facing not only planners of new operations, but also those involved with cur- rent operations, including the eventual change from open-pit to underground. Increasing ground control problems on many mines, plus a better understanding of dilution and ore loss problems have meant a review of current mining methods and support techniques. Experiments are only successful if conducted in the right mining environment and on the right scale. Mining personnel have been known for their conservatism and will tend to persevere with an established method rather than change; often, hidden costs will obscure the correct economic assessment. An established mining sequence is not necessarily correct in the long term. However, recommendations to change are usually met with opposition because of inconvenience, temporary production problems and the desire for a trouble-free guarantee. In any planning exercise, care must be taken that time and money are not wasted in trying to achieve the unattainable. During the decision-making period, production personnel must be involved, and, if possible, they should visit similar omrations to that proposed. Co-operative production personnel will help ensure success. Descriptions of mining methods are available in technical papers and books, and it is not intended to discuss this aspect, but, rather, the various factors which must be recognised before arriving at a final selection. In another paper presented at this Conference (Heslop and Laubscher, 1981) factors affecting ore recovery and dilution are discussed in greater detail for various cave mining methods. PRELIMINARY CONSIDERATIONS Comprehensive Geological Data. Geological information is available during the exploration stage, but, often, core from exploration drilling is not analysed with the selection of a mining method in mind. Drilling costs are high, therefore the maximum benefits must be derived from this operation. Holes which have not intersected ore may provide data on possible shaft sites, and 35 mm colour slides of core, sound logging and geomechanics classification, will provide a record which can be used with confidence at a later date. Intersections of the various rock types should be kept for future study; for example, is weathering likely to be a problem, bearing in mind that this can be accelerated in the warm, humid atmosphere of an underground mine. The accumulation of data required to select a mining method starts with initial geological work in the target area, whether this be surface mapping or a diamond drill hole. Publications. As technical papers, reports and books are used in the selection of mining methods, an appeal is made to authors to describe the geological environment so that readers can relate to their own conditions. Not enough emphasis is given to the problems experienced and the techniques employed to overcome them. Follow-up papers are seldom written and we should be prepared to discuss our failures. Diagrams are often misleading, as the ideal and not actual situations are depicted. The caved ore/waste interface is not a straight line, and whereas this may not be significant in a diagram of a 200-117 draw height, it certainly is in sub-level caving with draw zones only 1 - 2 m width but up to 20 m high. SUMMARY OF FACTORS AFFECTING THE SELECTION OF UNDERGROUND MASS MINING METHODS (a) Regional rock stresses and mining geometry. (b) The geomechanics rock mass classification of the orebody and surrounding rock mass. (c) Ratio of the surface area of the ore/unpay interface to the contained ore which determines ore losses and dilution. (d) The cavability and fragmentation data of the ore and hangingwall. (e) The mineral distribution in the orebody and its dilution zone.
