This report concerns the microbial flora found throughout the surface facilities of six water-injection systems in Texas and Oklahoma. Each system is described in detail and water quality data are presented when available. Pseudomonads and sulfate-reducers (Desulfovibrio) were the predominate organisms found in the systems. The genera Sphaerotilus, Bacillus, Achromobacter, Minococcus, Clostridium, Flavobacteriurn, and Sarcina were also isolated in significant numbers. Molds, iron bacteria, sulfur bacteria and soil bacteria were found less frequently in the systems. It is concluded that a complex microbiological flora exists in oilfield water-injection systems. A tendency for waters to deteriorate in passage through solid bed filters is also noted. INTRODUCTION The injection of water into a subsurface formation is often accompanied by numerous problems, the origin and nature of which are only partially understood. During the past few years, investigators have indicated that bacteria are involved in some of these problems even though very little specific information is available concerning this matter. It is surprising that investigators working on microbiological problems in water injection have never made a complete study of the flora of these systems. The logical course to pursue is that of identifying the microbial flora and then examining each organism individually and in combination with others to determine if they produce a particular problem. The objective of the present investigation is to identify the microbial flora in water-injection systems. In addition. the quality of the water in most of the systems was determined and some observations made on the extent to which passage through surface-handling facilities affects water quality. The information derived from this study can serve as a foundation for additional basic investigations. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The microbial flora of six water-injection systems were studied at 50 sampling points. These systems are experiencing problems which may be attributable to micro-organisms, and two were being treated with antimicrobial agents at the time of this study. The samples were obtained by inoculating 1.0 ml of the water onto the different media at the sampling point. The media used for primary isolation included nutrient agar, Strokes agar, M-10-E medium and semi-solid thioglycollate medium. The cultures were returned to the laboratory, incubated at 30°C until growth occured; then, pure cultures were obtained from individual colonies. The pure cultures were identified according to standardbacteriologica1 procedures. Those organisms not fitting identification criteria exactly, even though exhibiting close similarities to known species, are listed as unidentified organisms. Membrane filters were used to make water-quality tests at intervals before and after collection of the microbiological samples. The filter discs were 47 mm in diameter with a 0.45-micron particle-size retention, and the tests were done under closed conditions at 20) psi. Membrane flow rates are plotted as increasing filtrate volumes, and the total solids contents arcs given when available. An effort was made to sample at each place in a system where a change in environment occurred. In this manner, the effect of passage through filters, tanks, hay sections, etc., on the microbial flora and water quality could be observed. RESULTS SYSTEM A This waterflood system (Fig. 1) is about four years old and daily pumps approx&ately 110,000 bbl of oil-free sour water from a 3,700-ft deep reef. The

(communication to the Secretary*):—Mr. Blake's recent paper upon this topic undoubtedly partly explains the rationale of a part of the known facts bearing upon discolorat'ion and encrustation of rocks. His quotation from Humboldt, with reference to certain South American examples, may be questioned in the light of further facts, which do not appear to bear out the great traveler's theory of causation. There is no available evidence that the waters of the tropical rivers referred to by Professor Blake contain dissolved organic matter in the varying proportions required to demonstrate Humboldt's guess, nor do the concomitant facts in any manner bear out the hypothesis that the blackening in one case and its absence in the other may, perhaps, be traced to differences in the chemical reactions of the respective waters. Careful consideration of Professor Blake's illustrations, in connection with numerous personal observations extending over widely-scattered areas, convinces me that elements of

Chalcopyrite can be readily leached with HNO3, but the recovery of elemental sulfur does not exceed 50% under the most favorable conditions. Preheating at 500°C in a slightly reducing atmosphere increases the recovery of elemental sulfur to about 65%. Chalcopyrite can also be treated with HNO3 in a pressure reactor at 110°C to solubilize selectively the copper while iron remains in the residue as an oxide. The recovery of elemental sulfur also improved when preheated chalcopyrite is treated in this way. Stainless steel should be an adequate material of construction.

HE majority of liquidus and solidus surfaces in phase diagrams have been determined by the conventional cooling- and heating-curve techniques.' These techniques have two main shortcomings: 1) the solidus may be in considerable error due to the difficulty involved in completely homogenizing the solid and 2) the determination of liquidus and solidus in more than a two-component system does not enable one to determine tie-lines connecting the specific equilibrium solid and liquid compositions. However, in a recent paper by one of the authors,' a method was suggested whereby the liquidus and solidus surfaces plus tie-lines in an n-component system may be determined. This method utilizes a controlled solidification technique and assumes that interface equilibrium exists during freezing. The present work was undertaken with a twofold purpose; first, to determine the liquidus and solidus lines in the pseudo-binary system Bi2Te3-Bi2Se3 by heating- and cooling-curve techniques and, second, to determine the partition coefficients of Te and Se in the BizTe3-,Sex system by controlled solidifica- tion techniques. The two sets of results can be compared to test the accuracy of the controlled solidification method. EXPERIMENTAL I—The starting materials for this study were 997999 pct Bi, Te, and Se, obtained from the American Smelting and Refining Co. The compounds BizTe, and Bi2Se3 were each prepared by melting together stoichiometric amounts of the elements, followed by twelve zone-refining passes. This produced homogeneous bars of the compounds for use in the phase-diagram studies. The apparatus used to obtain heating and cooling curves is illustrated schematically in Fig. 1. The alloy samples were located in a graphite crucible placed in a stainless steel canister. The canister was supported in a heavily lagged pit furnace by a device which oscillated the canister about its vertical axis at a frequency of about 3 cycles per sec during heating and cooling-curve runs. The graphite crucible was designed to minimize the thermal coupling of the sample to the furnace. MANY of the magnesite ores of the western part of the United States contain such large amounts of silica and hydrous silicate minerals that the value of the ores is either low or nominal. Expensive and carefully controlled mining methods are necessary to prevent excessive dilution of the higher grade ores by introduction in mining of small pieces of the hanging walls or footwalls of the deposit. This difficulty is further complicated by the various states of decomposition of the country rock of the deposits in which many of the ores occur. The problem the authors attempted to solve arose from a request to float an impure magnesite containing varying proportions of siliceous gangue with calcium carbonate. The ore is normally enclosed in-serpen-tine masses, somewhat decomposed, and in mining it wall rock is inci-dentally added, so that variable amounts of siliceous material occur in the samples. The silica, alumna, and iron oxide are so closely associated with the magnesium carbonate in the magnesite that ordinary mechanical separation at coarse mesh sizes is of no avail. It is well known that calcium carbonate can be floated by suitable reagents, therefore it seemed reasonable to suppose that magnesium carbonate minerals would behave in a similar manner, but experimental trial proved that this supposition was unfounded. Therefore the first step in the problem was to find out what differences of behavior there were between magnesium and calcium carbonates under flotation conditions, or when suspended in water. In water at 18° C. magnesium carbonate is slightly more soluble than calcium carbonate; in fact; MgCO3 is soluble to the extent of 0.0106 grams in 100 c.c. of water at 18° C. and CaCO3 to the extent of 0.0013 grams. However, magnesium carbonate in water gradually changes to the basic carbonates of a composition (3MgCO3.Mg(OH)23H20) or (4MgCO3.Mg(OH)25H20), depending upon conditions, and calcium carbonate to calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)2. INTRODUCTION Tailings produced by many uranium milling operations consist of fine sands with some silt and slimes. When fine sandy materials are placed by hydraulic methods behind an impermeable dam, they are deposited in a loose state and some portion remains saturated. These saturated, loose fine sands are highly susceptible to liquefaction, the phenomenon in which a monotonic or cyclic disturbance causes excess pore water pressure and, concurrently, a total loss of strength in the sand. Once liquefied, the fine sand flows, causing collapse of supported structures. The potential for such a liquefaction failure was identified and successfully treated at Sohio Western Mining Company's L-Bar Uranium Operations near Seboyeta, New Mexico. The Sohio tailings dam is an earthfill starter dam with tailings raises constructed upstream of the starter dam crest. Beginning with the start of mill operations in 1976, tailings were deposited hydraulically in the impoundment behind the starter dam. As the tailings level approached the crest of the starter dam, beached tailings were excavated and placed in lifts by a dozer to form two raises above the crest of the starter dam. As the impoundment has gradually filled with tailings, the decant water pond level has risen. Correspondingly, the water level in the tailings dam, upstream of the chimney drain, has also risen. By August 1980, the phreatic surface was above the crest of the starter dam and stability analyses indicated that the tailings dam did not have the safety factor of 1.0, under static loading with liquefaction, implicit in the 1980 New Mexico State Engineer's requirements. The problem related directly to the high phreatic surface in the loose sandy tailings behind a dam structure that was not capable of resisting failure which might develop in liquefied tailings. Two methods of stability enhancement were considered for the Sohio dam. One method was reinforcement of the dam using a clay buttress placed against the downstream slope. The other method was installation of horizontal drains through the starter dam to drain decant water and lower the phreatic surface. Either method would increase the stability of the dam. However, the comparative analysis of the methods indicated that horizontal drainage offered significant advantages in cost and could provide a more direct remedy of the source of the problem, the saturated section of tailings. In addition, a drainage system would be more amenable to modification and more quickly installed than a buttress. On the other hand, a clay buttress could be more directly controlled, would involve routine earthwork, and has successful precedent. Therefore, the buttress approach would involve less risk. After weighing the advantages of both methods and the costs versus risks, the horizontal drainage approach was selected. Consequently, a horizontal pipe drain system was recommended and designed (D’Appolonia, 1981a). This paper describes the design and installation of the drainage system and its initial performance. PIPE DRAIN SYSTEM DESIGN Design Criteria and Parameters To increase the stability of the dam to acceptable levels, the drainage system had to lower the phreatic surface behind the dam to the level calculated to give a minimum safety factor of 1.0 under conditions of liquefaction. In addition, the system needed to be essentially self-operating, easy to maintain, and economical. To accomplish these objectives, the following design criteria were established: 1. The pipe drains must lower the phreatic surface at least 4.3 m (14 ft.) at the midpoint along the dam (the deepest section) and by proportionately smaller amounts toward the abutments to satisfy safety factor requirements.

Creep of very coarse grained, high purity aluminum was studied at 400° to 1100°F with an initial stress range of 50 to 1200 psi. The process of boundary sliding and migration was studied. The driving force of boundary migration under creep conditions is shown to be a combination of strain energy migrationand surface energy. A theory is presented regarding the strainenergyrole the grain boundaries play under creep conditions. From this thetheory intercrystalline failure of commercial alloys can be explained. Also from this theory an optimum grain size should exist for good high temperature properties of high purity materials. IN the investigation of the creep of very coarse grained, high purity aluminum previously reported,' the cyclic nature of the process of grain boundary sliding and migration has been established by microscopic observation of the actual creep process as well as metallographically. It was also substantiated by measuring localized strains across the grain boundaries. In addition, it was shown how extensive subgrain and fold formation may result from boundary sliding and how the slid grain boundary may become sharply wavy as a result of subgrain formation. Since the publication of those results, additional information on the process of grain boundary sliding and migration has been obtained. It is the purpose of this paper to report on the direction and driving force of boundary sliding and migration, the effect of grain size, and the effect of temperature. Finally the effect of decreasing purity (alloys 2s and 3s) on the process of boundary sliding and migration is noted. From these results, an explanation is presented for the intercrystalline failure of alloys under creep conditions. The effects of grain size on the creep properties of impure and high purity materials are discussed in the same light. The experimental procedures and technique have been presented elsewhere.' It is only necessary to state how the 2s and 3s aluminum specimens are prepared. Machined specimens were first annealed at 600°F for about 12 hr. In order to produce a large grain size the specimens were then stretched 3 to 8 pct. The specimens were marked with reference marks, electropolished, annealed at 900°F for 24 hr and at 1150°F for 12 hr, and repolished. The grain size of 2s aluminum produced by this treatment is comparable to that of high purity aluminum in the direction of its width of the specimen, i.e., there are 2 to 4 grains across the width of the specimen. However, the grains of 2s aluminum are 3 to 10 times longer in the direction of the specimen axis. On the other hand, the grain size of coarse grained 3s aluminum ranges from 10 to 20 grains across the width of the specimen due to the treatment just outlined and therefore is much smaller than that of both high purity and 2s aluminum. As in 2s aluminum, the grains are about 3 to 10 times longer in the direction of the specimen axis than in the direction of the width of the specimen. The arrangements of the grains in 2s and 3s aluminum were generally irregular; therefore it was difficult to follow the course of the grain boundaries. Results Method of Presentation: In order to show the arrangement of the grains, especially the direction and positions of the grain boundaries, traces of the grain boundaries on the four surfaces of the specimens were unfolded and mapped out after macroetching. Figs. 1 and 2 show the structural development drawings of specimens P-3 and P-8 respectively. THE data given herein were first included in a paper read before San Francisco Section, A.I.M.E., in October 1940, and are applicable to conditions existing until the gold-dredging industry was temporarily suspended by Order L-208 of the War Production Board in the fall of 1942. There is no doubt that gold dredging will be resumed at some future time, and on a scale equivalent to that of the recent past, but the cost data given herein will be affected to some extent by conditions existing at that time, and by labor rates and prices for materials then prevailing. DRAGLINE VS. BUCKET-LINE Dragline dredges should not be considered for mining large areas of low-grade placer gravel. In such deposits a dragline operator with a 5-cu. yd. dragline would be doing well to maintain an operating cost of 6¢ per cu. yd., while a bucket-line dredge with buckets no smaller than 7 cu. ft. each could be operated for less than 4¢ per cu. yd. By operating costs, I mean only field charges such as direct operating and overhead, which includes pay roll, power or fuel, repairs and maintenance, insurance, land clearing and general expenses, but not including such items as prospecting, depletion, depreciation of equipment, State Franchise Tax, or Federal Income Tax. It is not to be inferred that a dragline dredge cannot make a profit in small low-grade deposits, where the extent of a given property is too small to justify the use of the more costly bucket-line dredge. Consider small deposits of 10¢ gravel. It is obvious that a deposit of 5,000,000 cu. yd. of such gravel could not be mined profitably with a new, 7-cu. ft. bucket-line dredge, costing upward of $250,000, and with operation costs at 4¢ per cu. yd., paying for land or royalties out of earnings; nor could a new combination 5-cu. yd. dragline and washing plant, worth upward of $125,000 and working at 6¢ per cu. yd., make a profit. These comparisons are made because the hourly capacity of both types of dredges is nearly the same. The bucket-line dredge averages 93 per cent operating time in 24 hr., as against about 80 per cent or less for the dragline dredge. These percentages of operating time are important factors in making a comparison of this kind. The bucket-line dredge has greater efficiency in cleaning soft bedrock, usually characteristic of dredging deposits, and a 7-cu. ft. bucket-line dredge can be efficient to a total digging depth of 80 ft. (65 ft. below water, 15 ft. above). A 5-cu. yd. dragline dredge is limited to about 30 ft. of efficient digging depth, 5 ft. of which could be above water. In small areas of gravel not over 30 ft. deep, a 5-cu. yd. dragline dredge could make a profit where a bucket-line dredge could not do so. As an example: compare the dredging of 3,000,000 cu. yd. of 10¢ gravel 28 ft. deep with bucket line, costing 4¢ per cu. yd., and with a 5-cu. yd. dragline dredge operating at 6¢ per cu. yd. Because of small yardage, new equipment is not warranted, therefore we can assume that the dredges of both types are used equipment, fully depreciated. Dismantling, mov-

Secondary fertilizer minerals are the mineral materials used to supply directly and indirectly the secondary and trace plant food nutrient needs of a fertilizer. Since few soils contain sufficient availability of all plant nutrients for their proper growth, man has prepared mixtures of plant food materials to correct these nutrient deficiencies. These mixtures or fertilizers, when added correctly to a soil, make it possible for abundant and economic crop growth. Many kinds of materials are used as sources of these needed nutrients. They come from natural and synthetic materials and minerals including many beneficiated byproduct compounds. A fertilizer consists largely of carriers of one or more of the three major plant foods, namely nitrogen (N), phosphorus-phosphorus pentoxide (P2O5) and potassium-potash (K2O). Many other nutrients are just as essential for plant growth as the three major plant foods. In fact, the efficient use of fertilizers today depends upon an adequate supply of all these other nutrients. Since these additional materials are usually removed from the soil by plants and supplied in fertilizer in less quantities than the major nutrients, they are called secondary and minor nutrients. In the early days these special nutrients were contained as impurities in the primary nutrient carriers. Today, fertilizers are made primarily from concentrated and synthetic materials which carry very few of these other essential nutrients. Consequently, many secondary and trace nutrient carriers, as salts, byproduct compounds and even minerals have to be added to fertilizers. Secondary Nutrient Carriers The secondary plant foods in fertilizer are next to the major nutrients in abundance. They are calcium, magnesium, sulfur, chlorine, silicon and sodium. Although many of these elements are added to a fertilizer as part of the major nutrient carriers, they are also added in special carriers. The large tonnage of these secondary nutrient carriers used in fertilizers represents only a small percentage of the total production of these materials. A fertilizer producer thinks in terms of materials which supply nutrients instead of minerals. Therefore, these materials will be discussed by elements. CALCIUM Soils need calcium to supply the nutrient needs of plants and maintain the desired physical and biological conditions in the soil. The available calcium is usually 40 to 80 pct of the exchangeable bases. (These bases are ones which can be displaced by other cations and determined quantitatively. They are then expressed as milliequivalents per hundred grams of soil-me.) Direct applications of lime materials such as burnt, ground or hydrated limes are the important sources of calcium for the soil. Most crops, especially legumes, have a high requirement for calcium. The average farmer does not use enough lime to maintain the proper level of available calcium. Hence, it is necessary for many fertilizers to contain soluble calcium materials for efficient use of the major nutrients. The following major nutrient carriers supply some calcium: calcium nitrate, ammonium nitrate mixtures and cyanamid, and many of the phosphates. Both synthetic and natural gypsum are used in fertilizer production. Some crops such as peanuts require a large amount of soluble calcium. Gypsum is the important supplier of this soluble calcium. (communication to the Secretary*) :-Mr. Dilworth's formulas and tables are of course correct, and the extinction will occur as calculated, provided the money periodically set aside for sinking-fund be really invested. and the interest compounded as assumed in the calculation. Actually, in almost all cases, such funds are used "in the business," in which case, in addition to the periodical charges for principal of the fund, additional charges must be made at the end of each period to cover the interest and compound interest on previous charges. The periodical charge for sinking-fund thus becomes a varying and continually increasing one until the date of extinction. On many accounts it seems more natural and convenient to make the extinction by a fixed periodical charge under the legal rule for partial payments, namely, that each payment should apply first to the interest due at the date of payment;: and any remainder, after this is satisfied, be deducted from the principal before the interest for the next period is calculated. IN telling the story of Canada's minerals many interesting and spectacular details will be passed over to permit pointing out some of the significant inter- national aspects. No country now has enough of all minerals for its own use. The problems of satisfaction of both national and world demands under these conditions have become international in scope, and history supplies no obvious solutions. The minerals of Canada are coming to play a prominent part in such problems. Production and Reserves In the last decade Canada has rapidly advanced in mineral production. In 1928 the total value of mineral products from Canadian sources reached 273 millions of dollars. Canada ranks first in production of nickel, first in asbestos, second in cobalt, third in gold and silver, fourth in lead and copper, and sixth in zinc.

Aluminum crystals with longitudinal-axis orientations of (111) . (110), and (100) were deforined in tension and annealed. The conditions of deformation were controlled so that the re crystallization nuclei originated in either the heavily deformed regions at saw cuts {artificial nucleation) or in the lightly deformed matrix (spontaneous nucleation). The artificial-nucleatioln experiments showed that in lightly deformed (110) and (100) crystals low-angle twist boundaries are most mobile, while in (111> crystals and heavily deformed (110) and (100) crystals high-angle tilt boundaries with near (111) rotations are favored. The spontaneous-nucleation experiments showed the existence of preferred orientations in the (111) crystals. The nonrandomness of the grain orientations is quantitatively determined through a comparison with the results which would he obtained from a randowl set of grain ovientations. PREVIOUS recrystallization studies have been performed on single crystals deformed in tension.1 7 The crystals used in these studies usually had random tensile-axis orientations and the extent of deformation was not a primary consideration. The present study concerns the recrystallization of single crystals with tensile-axis orientations of (Ill), (110), and (100). The emphasis of this work is on the influence of the tensile-axis orientation and the degree of deformation on both the nucleation and growth processes. The multiple-slip orientations were chosen because secondary slip or slip intersection promotes nucleation.1,5,8 These crystals recrystallize at lower strains than the crystals which are oriented for single slip. Also, the greatest variation in deformation behavior is exhibited by the multiple-slip orientations. The stress-strain curves for crystals with tensile-axis orientations of (111) are higher than the stress-strain curves for poly-crystals, and the stress-strain curves for crystals with tensile-axis orientations of (100) are lower (at large strains) than the stress-strain curves for the crystals which deform initially in single slip.g The recrystallization nuclei originated in either 1) the homogeneously* deformed matrix of the crys- tals or 2) the heavily and inhomogeneously deformed regions at saw cuts. The nuclei will be referred to hereafter as spontaneous and artificial nuclei, respectively. The two terms do not imply a difference in the nature of the nuclei; they imply simply a difference in the mode of introduction of the nuclei. During spontaneous nucleation very few (always less than ten) grains nucleate, while during artificial nucleation large numbers of grains nucleate. Only a fraction of the artificially nucleated grains penetrate very far into the deformed matrix during annealing. The grains that penetrate the farthest into the deformed matrix will be referred to as the dominant grains. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The thirty-five crystals used in this investigation were grown from the melt in milled graphite boats at a rate of 1.6 cm per hr. The crystals had dimensions of approximately 6 by 12 by 80 or 6 by 6 by 80 mm and the aluminum was of 99.992 pet purity. The as-grown crystals were annealed at 610°C for 24 hr and furnace-cooled. They were then heavily etched and electropolished in a solution of five parts methanol to one part perchloric acid. The crystal orientations were obtained by back-reflection Laue photographs and were accurate to ±2 deg. The tensile-axis orientations were (loo), (110), and (111). Two of the side faces of the (111) crystals were (110) lanes. The (110) crystals had both {100) and {110) side faces and the (100) crystals had (100) side faces. The crystals were deformed at a strain rate of 0.003 per min. Shear stress and shear strain were obtained by multiplying and dividing the tensile stress and strain, respectively, by the Schmid factor, m. For the (111) crystals m = 0.272 and for the (110) and the (100) crystals m = 0.408. The Schmid factor is effectively constant during deformation for all orientations. The deformed crystals were sawed into 1-in.-long specimens while the crystals were totally enclosed in a graphite boat. The sawing was performed very carefully in order to limit the plastic deformation to the sawed regions. The specimens were electropolished in the solution mentioned above to remove the sawed-end deformation as well as controlled amounts of surface material. A special stainless-steel grip was used to hold the specimens during the electropolishing treatment. The gripping faces were flat, with no teeth, to prevent the introduction of extraneous de-

THE importance of the Donets coal field (the Donbas) to the national economy of the Soviet Union is well known. Great as was the significance of this tremendous deposit of coal in prewar days it is destined to become an even greater factor in the economic life of the country now that the tremendous havoc wrought by the Germans is being remedied. Since the war began, new coal fields have been extended; for example output of the Moscow and Karaganda (Kazakhstan) fields has become considerably larger while new mines are producing coal in several parts of Uzbekistan and Kirghizia. The huge West Siberian coal field, the Kuznetsk Basin, is producing more coal than ever before to supply the industries of that region and of the Urals. But so great has been the development of industry to meet war needs, especially in those districts of the Soviet Union that lie to the East of the Urals, that the coal obtained, eked out by such locally-won fuels as peat and wood, is still barely sufficient to meet industrial requirements. The main burden of the coal supply for the restored industries of the West, therefore, will fall on the Donbas.

This paper describes the use of the electric-arc furnace for the production of tough-pitch, horizontal cast copper shapes and the production of copper anodes from tank house anode scrap. This installation is the only one of its kind in the United States. SINCE the initial use of electric-arc furnaces for refined copper melting on a commercial scale at Copper Cliff in 1936, this type of melting has been of extreme interest to everyone in any way connected with copper casting and fabricating. Early in 1948, Kennecott Copper Corp. decided to build an electrolytic copper refinery at Garfield, Utah. One of the major decisions to be made at that time was the type of furnace to be used for melting cathodes for casting into refined copper shapes and for melting anode scrap for the production of anodes. Based on the results obtained from arc furnaces by the Tnternational Nickel Co. of Canada, at Copper Cliff, and by the American Smelting and Refining Co., at Baltimore, coupled with certain important economic factors such as having an adequate amount of relatively cheap power available at the Magna Central Power Plant, high cost of poles and oil in the Salt Lake District, and the lack of natural gas at that time, the final decision was to install electric-arc furnaces rather than the standard type of rever-beratory furnaces. Experience has shown certain parts of the original installation to have been inadequate or in need of modification. Although the present status of arc-furnace melting at the Utah Refinery is far from perfect, nevertheless substantial progress has been made. At the Utah refinery, copper is melted in three 15-ft diam, size "M" Lectromelt furnaces, two of which are used for melting cathodes and one for remelting anode scrap. Each furnace is energized from a 13,800-225 v, 3-phase, 60-cycle, 6000-kva (at 40°C rise) oil-immersed water-cooled transformer. Auxiliary equipment for each refined copper furnace includes a charging machine, launders, ladle, 40 ft diam Walker-type casting wheel, bosh, and inspection conveyor. The anode furnace differs in that it is charged by hand from an elevated platform and the anodes are picked off the 24-ft diam casting wheel by a takeoff hoist and loaded directly into specially designed trailers, Figs. 1 and 2. Electrical Equipment Electric power to operate the arc furnaces is generated at the Kennecott-owned Magna Central Power Station two miles distant and transmitted to the Refinery outdoor substation at 44,000 v. At this point it is stepped down to 13,800 v and carried through concrete-lined underground tunnels to the switchgear and then to the primary side of the furnace transformers. The power is conducted from the Y-connected secondary bus bars of the transformer to the electrode arms by means of 22 flexible copper cable conductors per phase. Each cable has a cross-sectional area of 1,750,000 circular mils, giving a total area of 38,500,000 circular mils per phase. The power is carried from these cables to the three individual electrode holders by means of water-cooled copper bus tubing. The electrode clamps are incorporated in the electrode holders and are released by air pressure working against a spring in the clamp control cylinder. For the year 1943, exploratory drilling in South Central Texas continued on the sharp decline that started during 1942. Of the 3 counties comprising this district, as now revised to include the same area as is covered by District No. I, Oil and Gas Division, Railroad Commission of Texas, I5 counties are producing oil or gas. Only 29 exploratory wells were drilled during 1943, as compared with 51 exploratory wells in 1942, or a decrease of over 40 per cent. One new oil field and one new gas field were discovered during the year and a new horizon was discovered in an existing oil field. This cornpares with two new oil fields and an extension to an existing gas field in 1942. The one new oil field, South Washburn, in southeastern La Salle County, was discovered by Quintana Petroleum Corporation's No. I-D South Texas indicate in April 1943, flowing 4 bbl. per day, 48" A.P.I. gravity oil with an estimated 4 million cubic feet of gas from Wilcox sand at 6030 ft. This well i's the result of an extensive seismograph survey of the area. It is about 434 miles southwest of the same company's Green Branch field and by the end of the year one dry hole had been drilled to the southwest of this discovery. The one new gas field, which was not named, was located in eastern McMullen County by Edwin M. Jones' No. 102 Ezzell, in November 1943, for an estimated 8 million cubic feet of gas from shallow Jackson sand at 1222 ft. NO addi- tional wells have been drilled in this area, which may also be considered as an extension to the South Calliham field. The one new producing horizon was discovered in the South Campana field in southeastern McMullen County, by Argo Oil Corporation's No. 2-G Edrington, in January 1943, flowing 55 bbl. per day, 21' A.P.I. gravity oil with 40 per cent water from Government wells sand at 2609 feet. None of these discoveries were of major importance and subsequent development in these new areas has proved to be disappointing. Produc'tion for the district during 1943 totaled approximately 6,985,000 bbl. from about 3430 producing wells. This is an increase in production of about 5 per cent over 1942, but a decrease in producing wells of about 10 per cent under the number of wells producing in 1942 for the same district. Average production per well was 5.4 bbl. during 1943 as against 4.8 bbl. during 1942. Approximately 5,320,000 hhl. of this total production, or 76 per cent, was produced by the four Edwards lime fields, Luling, Branyon, Salt Flat, and Darst Creek, which are from 22 to 14 years old. The remaining production came from the 43 other active oil fields in the district. Drilling in the proven fields maintained approximately the same level as for 1942, with a total of 36 wells drilled. Of these operations, 21 were oil wells, one was a gas well and 14 were dry holes. This is a slightly better proportion of producers than for 1942. Washburn field had the greatest number of new producing wells drilled during the year, with a total of 10.
