The adsorption density of hexyl mercaptan was measured at the gold-solution and the gold-vapor interfaces. This collector is strongly adsorbed at low concentrations, a monomolecular layer being formed at the gold-solution interface at concentrations as low as 2 x 10'6 moles per liter. A maximum contact angle of 83 ± 3° is observed. From a thermodynamic analysis of the experimental data the changes in surface tension at the gold-gas and gold-solution interface are calculated. The data also suggest that the adsorption density of mercaptan at the gold-gas interface exceeds that at the gold-solution interface. In the equilibrium state, a simple flotation system consists of three phases, the solid to be floated, air, and an aqueous solution in stable contact along a line. During the process leading to this final state, a solid-gas interface is created at the expense of a portion of the liquid-gas and solid-liquid interfaces. This change of state is achieved by addition of a collector and, if necessary, suitable modifying agents to the system. By a combined application of the Gibbs Adsorption and the Young Equations, de Bruyn, Overbeek and Schuhmannl were able to show theoretically that the equilibrium distribution of the collector at all three interfaces determines the magnitude of the contact angle. Their analysis led them to conclude that the equilibrium adsorption density of the collector at the solid-gas interface exceeds its density at the solid- liquid interface. This paper succeeded in focussing attention on the neglected role of the solid-gas interface in flotation. In recent years the application of radiotracer, infrared, electrochemical and electro-kinetic techniques to studies of the solid-liquid interface2-5 enhanced our understanding of adsorption processes at this interface. Except for the measurement of contact angles, the solid-gas interface received no attention in fundamental flotation studies. In an attempt to apply the analysis of de Bruyn, Overbeek and Schuhmann to a simple flotation system, an investigation of the adsorption of hexyl mercaptan onto gold was undertaken. Gold was chosen as the solid phase in order to keep the number of dissolved chemical species in the solution phase to a minimum. Hexyl mercaptan (1 - hexanethiol) was selected as collector because its relatively high vapor pressure at room temperature makes it possible to obtain adsorption measurements at the solid-gas interface. This flotation system consists, therefore, of a pure solid phase (gold), an aqueous solution of a weakly dissociated collector (1 -hexanethiol), and a gaseous phase, nitrogen saturated with respect to both water vapor and mercaptan vapor. EXPERIMENTAL MATERIALS AND METHODS Materials: Liquid 1-hexanethiol (C6H13SH) was obtained from Distillation Products Industries and was further purified by double distillation. The purity of the final product was established by boiling point and refractive index measurements. For the adsorption studies from aqueous solution, the radiotracer element, sulfur-35, (half life 87.1 days, 0.169 Mev beta ray) was synthesized into the mercaptan by Tracerlab Inc., Boston, Mass. A close boiling fraction of the synthesized compound was used in the adsorption studies. The specific activity of the radioactive compound was 10 millicuries per gram.

Measurement of radioactivity of rocks and ores has developed into a complete method of geophysical exploration. The problem falls into three natural categories: (1) surface radiation measurement in the field and underground; (2) radioactivity logging of drillholes; and (3) laboratory analysis of samples. Portable counters are used in the field for tracing radioactive formations and for quanti tative estimates of radioactive content of surface rock. Wartime advances in battery design make it possible to construct small precision counters that can be carried easily. Even the smallest conventional diamond drillholes can be logged, and actual content of the radioactive element can be measured. The exact grade of very thin active layers or veins can be estimated only approximately. Samples may be analyzed for their alpha, beta or gamma activity, and beta assaying is the best suited to rapid routine operation. Simple calibration with standard samples is sufficient for rough work, but a density correction is necessary when greater precision is required. Samples with high emanating power should be fixed and stored for three weeks to reestablish the radium-radon equilibrium prior to precision assaying. Carno-tite can be fixed by sintering or molding with plastics. Among the important new developments, a low-voltage Geiger tube has been 'designed recently, and crystal scintillation counters hold great promise for high-efficiency gamma-ray measurement. Introduction During the last few years we have witnessed an unprecedented rise in the demand for radioactive minerals, coming as a direct consequence of the discovery of nuclear fission and subsequent developments, the full impact of which is by no means in sight even now. It remains certain, however, that radioactive minerals, and especially those which can be used as ores of uranium and thorium, will continue to be of great interest not only to the prospector and mine operator but also to the various inspection parties envisioned by most of the schemes advanced for the control of nuclear energy on a world-wide basis. It is clear, therefore, that the measurement of radioactivity in rocks in the field as well as in samples in the laboratory has become a method of geophysical exploration of some importance. If we consider the recent technological advances in the general fields of nuclear physics and electronics it seems proper to review the present status of the methods and procedures of radiological exploration. General Considerations Equilibrium If we take a fixed amount of uranium that has just been purified, some of it will immediately start decaying into its first daughter element which in turn decays into its own daughter and so on down the line until the last daughter is reached—a stable isotope of lead. The rate at which a radioactive element decays is frequently expressed as the half-life, which is the length of time required for the decay of half the atoms in a given amount. SAFETY in mining depends on wire rope to as great, if not greater, extent than in any other industry. Sudden failure of a shaft-hoist rope might easily result in death or serious injury to the operators and workmen, extensive damage to expensive equipment, and a loss in production while repairs are being made. A wire rope is only as good as its component parts. It must be made from wire properly drawn and treated. It must be fabricated on machines large enough and capable of imparting the necessary qualities to meet the stringent service conditions. However, unless the fundamental requirement of good ropemaking is recognized, all other operations, no matter how carefully performed, will not impart reliability and quality to the product. This fundamental requirement is steel that is homogeneous, of high resistance to fatigue, and of a type suitable for rope wire. Most wire-rope manufacturers agree that rope wire should be made from acid-open-hearth steel. It is comparatively easy to meet the same physical properties with basic steel, but such properties are only part of the requirements for good wire. It is absolutely necessary, particularly for rope service such as mining, where reliability is essential, that the wire be uniform throughout its entire length. Most manufacturers feel that this highly important requirement is better met by acid-open-hearth steel.

A general survey of the mechanical properties of commercially pure beryllium fabricated from powder by vacuum hot pressing and other consolidation methods is presented. The effect of fabrication method, grain size, strain rate, and directionality upon both room and elevated temperature tensile properties is reported. BERYLLIUM metal, in spite of its rather restricted use, has been the object of attention for many researchers in the past half century. However, such work was performed on special experimental lots of metal made in small quantities by a variety of reduction methods. Not until 1946 was there a substantial production of beryllium metal, and not until 1950 was there a steady production of a commercially standard beryllium in the United States. This output was both the result of a requirement of the Atomic Energy Commission for a high grade beryllium of consistent quality and the development of a powder metallurgy process, by the Brush Beryllium Co., known originally as Process Q, which yielded a fine grained beryllium suitable for fabrication. Because this powder metallurgy product, known as QMV, superceded other types of metal made previously and represents the great majority of beryllium in use today, it seems worthwhile to present the results of studies on the mechanical properties of this metal as currently made. To the design engineer and the metallurgist, beryllium has extremely interesting properties. It is as light as magnesium alloys while having a stiffness modulus 40 pct greater than steel and a strength-weight ratio superior to titanium and aluminum alloys and aircraft steels. The melting point is high, 1287°C (2348°F), and it has good corrosion resistance both in air and water. Also, it is highly transparent to X-rays and has good heat and electrical conductivity (electric conductivity is greater than 40 pct of Cu). To the atomic energy program beryllium is considered a valuable material because of its low neutron-capture cross section and high neutron-scattering cross section which make it a good moderator and reflector for the lower velocity neutrons. A major technical difficulty limiting the use of beryllium, especially in structural applications, has been its notch sensitivity and consequent room temperature brittleness. Kaufmann, Gordon, and Lillie1 have reported their work on the mechanical properties of beryllium performed from 1946 to 1950. They studied the room and elevated temperature properties of cast and extruded beryllium and extruded electrolytic flake, Table I. Cast and extruded alloys of 85 to 99 pct Be were tested also. They found that extruded metal developed good strength and appreciable ductility in the extrusion direction and that thermal treatment and alloying provided little improvement in mechanical properties. They concluded that preferred orientation and fine grain size were the means of obtaining optimum tensile properties in beryllium. Other investigators have measured and commented on one of the most striking mechanical properties of beryllium, namely, its abnormally low Poisson's ratio.2 Udy, Shaw, and Boulger3 presented the latest published survey on properties of beryllium but their information is based only on published data available before April 1949 and cites little information on metal fabricated by powder metallurgy

The torsional deformation of aluminum and magnesium crystals is investigated, with particular reference to the dependence of proportional limit on crystal orientation. The proportional limit is found to be governed by the average value of the resolved shear stress on the most highly stressed slip systems, but the proportional limit does not strictly obey a critical-resolved-shear-stress law. The behavior of a cylindrical single crystal stressed in tension is well known: plastic flow begins when the resolved shear stress on the most highly stressed slip system reaches a critical value. There is much less understanding of the effect of torsion on such a crystal and on the way in which the critical-resolved-shear-stress law should be applied to torsional deformation. In the present paper particular attention is paid to the dependence of plastic yielding on crystal orientation and lesser attention to the mechanism of flow after yielding has occurred. New work on aluminum and magnesium crystals is presented, and previous results obtained in this laboratory on magnesium1 are re-examined. STRESS DISTRIBUTION The problems involved in torsional deformation of single crystals are due entirely to the complexity of the stress distribution. In tension, if loading conditions are perfect, the shear stress on any particular slip plane is completely uniform over the entire area of that plane. In torsion, on the other hand, the stress on any selected plane in a particular direction varies not only from center to edge of the specimen but also around its perimeter. It is convenient to express the stress at any point in terms of t0, which is the shear stress acting at the surface of a cylindrical specimen on a plane normal to the axis and in a direction tangential to the cylinder. At point P of Fig. 1 this stress acts in the direction of axis 2 and is given by To = 2T/pr3 [1] where T is the applied torque and r the specimen radius. This stress can be resolved on any chosen slip system, and details are given in the Appendix. Let P be the point on the specimen surface where the stress is to be evaluated; P is defined by its angular distance A from an arbitrary reference line through 0 normal to the axis. his line is usually taken as the direction of incidence of the X-ray beam used to determine the crystal orientation.) The effect of fabrication variables on the creep-rupture properties of TZM (Mo-0.5 pct Ti-0.08 pct Zr-0.03 pct C), Cb-TZM [columbium-modified TZM (7140-1.5 pct Nb-0.5 pct Ti-0.8 pct Zr-0.05 pct C)], and TZC (Mo-1.2 pct Ti-0.25 pct Zr-0.15 pct C) has been studied at 982º. 1093º, 1204º, and 1315°C for rupture times up to 1000 hr. The creep tests were performed in vacuum creep furnaces, employing cold-trapped oil-diffusion pumps, operating at pressures 2 X 10-7 tory. After-test chemical analyses showed no significant changes in interstitial content. The creep-rupture properties of TZM, fabricated according to current mill practice, were determined in the stress-relieved and in the re crystallized conditions to provide control data. Specimens of TZM, Cb-TZM, and TZC fabricated according to each of two experimental fabrication schedules were then tested. The schedules differed in terms of in-process annealing temperatures and warm -working temperatures. The data make several conclusions evident. Fabrication variables do indeed have a profound effect on the long-time creep-rupture properties of molybdenum alloys. Strengths of these alloys compare very favorably with those of other refractory metal alloys in the temperature range studied. FOR several years we have been engaged in the evaluation of the creep-rupture properties of promising refractory metal alloys. We consider the determination of these properties to 1000 hr at several temperatures necessary for a valid comparison. Such an evaluation indicated that the creep strengths of Mo-0.5 pct Ti and TZM (Mo-0.5 pct Ti-0.08 pct Zr-0.03 pct C) compare favorably with those of other refractory metal alloys. Tensile and recrystallization data of other investigators1,2 show an effect of fabrication variables. More specifically, those fabrication schedules which produce high strength through work hardening exhibit the least thermal stability. A similar conclusion was reported by perkins3 for Cb-TZM. This would lead one to expect that, in terms of creep, those materials showing higher strength at short times and low temperatures would exhibit lower strength at long times and high temperatures. If these expectations were fact, a substantial improvement could be made in these alloys by optimizing their fabrication schedule in terms of their anticipated service temperature. We therefore undertook a study of the effect of fabrication variables on the long-time creep properties of TZM, Cb-TZM (Mo-1.5 pct Cb-0.5 pct Ti-0.08 pct Zr-0.05pct C) and TZC (Mo-1.2 pct Ti-0.25 pct Zr-0.15 pct C). MATERIALS All materials used were supplied by the Climax Molybdenum Co. of Mich. Our original intention was to test the same heat of each alloy in different conditions. Fabrication difficulties prevented this; however, heats with nearly identical analysis were selected. The compositions of the materials used are listed in Table I. All materials were supplied in the

Laboratory water floods were performed in oil-wet and waterwet alundum and Torpedo cores, displacing a refined oil with n-hexylamine or Triton X-100 solution. Also, some floods were performed in which a sucrose solution was displaced with n-butyl alcohol. The Purpose ot the tests was to see if the oil recotlery could be increased and to examine what role the inter-facial tension reduction and wettability change play in the recovery mechanism. it was found that the chromatographic transport of amine was influenced by core wettability. In oil-wet cores, the rate of advance of the amine band could be predicted from equilibrium chromato-graphy, while in water-wet cores the amine band moved faster than predicted, indicating a non-equilibrium process. By reducing the interfacial tension to 1.1 dyne/ cm, oil recovery was increased. More oil was recovered from Dri-filmed cores than from water-wet cores. Reversing the wettability of the porous media from oil-wet condition also resulted in some additional oil recovery. Neutral wettability floods did not increase oil recovery. INTRODUCTION Interfacial forces in petroleum reservoirs are responsible for retention of large quantities of residual oil. Increasing exploration costs have created an incentive to attempt recovery of this residual oil by new and novel processes. One novel process involves changing the interfacial forces by introducing a chemical into the reservoir during water flooding. Recently, several investigators have carried out laboratory displacement tests using amines. lt3.4 The amines adsorbed onto initially water-wet core surfaces, changing them to oil wet. Additional oil was recovered when the cores were flooded in a manner reversing the. wettability from oil-wet conditions. In all these studies, the wettability reversal was considered responsible for increased oil recoveries although it was noted that amines also reduced oil-water interfacial tension. In the present study, displacement experiments were performed in water-wet and Dri-filmed cores. The purpose was to separate the effects of lowering the interfacial tension from changing the wettability. LABORATORY STUDY All experimental data given in this paper have been obtained at a temperature of 70F + 1 and prevailing atmospheric pressure. FLUIDS AND MATERIALS The oil used in these experiments* was washed with H2S04 and passed through two 100-200 mesh silica-gel beds to remove unsaturates and surface active impurities. Normal hexylamine** of practical purity was used, and the alundum cores*** were composed of nearly pure A1203. Fused quartz (SiOi) and Lucalox (A12 )t plates were used in the contact angle measurements. DISPLACEMENT TESTS Displacement tests were performed in alundum and Torpedo cores. Before displacement runs, cores were acidized with 0.1 normal HCI, flushed with distilled water and fired at 1,200F to make them water wet. This procedure also reduced water sensitivity of the Torpedo cores. Oil-wet cores were prepared from water-wet cores by flowing several pore volumes of 1 per cent by weight Dri-film SC-87 solution in heptane through the cores, flushing the cores with nitrogen, evacuating, and finally heating the cores at 300F for 4 or 5 hours. Between floods, cores were cleaned by conventional procedures and treated again as above.

The total amount of radon-222 released into the atmosphere by the US uranium mines and mills is only an infinitely small fraction of the total amount of radon released by the top layers of soil with a high concentration of uranium, such as is found in Grants, N. M. Even when compared to areas where mineable deposits of uranium are unknown, the amount of radon released by all US mining and milling operations is still relatively insignificant. THE determination of retained austenite by X-ray diffraction uses the following relationship:"" Pa = constant . RVaA (8) [1] where: P is the diffracted power from phase a; R, the calculated intensity factor; A, the absorption correction; 8, the diffraction angle; and Va, the irradiated volume of phase a For a flat sample making a glancing angle + with the incident beam the absorption correction is calculated as: * 1 sin (28 - 4) A .= 1 [2] µ sin, (28 — 4) + sin 4 where µ is the linear absorption coefficient. Beu3 has proposed that the computed absorption correction be combined with the constant and that the experimental observation of the absorption correction used in the original method be eliminated. This procedure is permissible only if: 1—There is no preferred orientation in the sample, and 2—The geometric requirements have been met precisely. If these conditions are not met the validity of the determination is questionable. Unfortunately the necessary conditions must be tested experimentally for each determination, and this is done most easily by observing whether the apparent absorption has the form of Eq. 2. In practice it may be convenient to plot P/R vs the parameter sin (2? — )[sin (28 — +) + sin +] to obtain straight lines for the ap- parent absorption correction. Deviations from straight lines indicate either that the sample has not been positioned correctly or that the relative intensities are incorrect. Geiger counter spectrometer methods also have been used successfully for retained austenite determinations. In the usual spectrometer arrangement the sample makes equal angles with the incident and diffracted beams (8 = ); thus the absorption correction is simply 1/2µ and independent of 8. The retained austenite is then easily calculated from integrated intensity measurements on austenite and martensite lines. If the austenite content is not too low and if excessive fluorescence is not encountered it is possible to use filtered radiation and a recording spectrometer. The integrated intensities are then proportional to the areas of the diffraction peaks. For lower austenite contents the following technique was used: A bent quartz monochromator and a Geiger counter spectrometer are employed. The monochromatic radiation is focused on the front slit, and the counter slit is made broad enough to include the entire line. A series of readings are taken in the vicinity of the diffraction peak. The highest reading includes the diffraction line plus background. The background is obtained from the average of several readings on each side of the peak. The integrated intensity is obtained by subtraction. CrK, and FeKa have been used for such determinations. This technique has been found to be as sensitive and as accurate as the photographic methods. In the spectrometer methods the ratio austenite/ martensite may be obtained from readings on austenite and martensite lines and the application of Eq. 1. It is also possible to use external standards and to obtain the austenite contents from measurements on the austenite lines alone. The small correction for carbides then becomes unnecessary. INTRODUCTION Purpose The in-situ leach method for uranium extraction is a relatively new and innovative method of uranium mining. In 1975, the first commercial in-situ facility began operation in south Texas. Since that time numerous other operations have been initiated as either pilot or commercial ventures. Considerable literature has been published that deals primarily with generalities of the process or environmental concerns. Several federal agencies have published documents which do not reflect the true operating or environmental nature of the in-situ leach method of uranium extraction. From an environmental standpoint, this is also evident in the promulgation of rules and regulations. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to present experience with an environmental concern--non- production zone excursions--such that the industry and the regulatory agencies will gain greater insight devoid of preconceived ideas and misconceptions. General Process Description In south Texas, in-situ leach mining is utilized to extract uranium from permeable sandstone ore deposits 61 to 213 meters (200 to 700 feet) below the surface. Uranium is present as an insoluble uranium oxide. In the in-situ or solution mining technique, anoxidizing lixiviant is injected into the formation through injection wells. The solution reacts with the insol uble carbonate complex. This soluble uranium complex is produced at recovery wells, each containing a submersible pump. During production there is a constant sweeping of lixiviant through the formation from the injection wells to the recovery wells. Injection and recovery wells can be arranged in any of a number of geometric patterns dependent upon ore body configuration, aquifer permeability, and operator preference. Submersible pumps in the recovery wells pump the uranium rich pregnant solution to the initial processing facility. Monitor wells surrcsund the pattern area and are screened in appropriate stratigraphic horizons (production and non-production zones) to detect any lixiviant migration that may occur (Fig. 1).

AN EDITORIAL on the Strike Situation in the Coal mining industry in the New York Evening Post of Nov. 4, 1919, gave what purported to be statistics of the Department of Labor, for a period of two weeks, which showed an average for the year, based on these two weeks, of 32% hours per week. This mode of arriving at the number of hours per week, while not accurate, is not so far off from the facts as to call for any special comment. The report of the U. S. Geological Survey, Department of Coal Statistics, give so the number of days worked in 1917 as 243; reducing the same to hours per week, assuming 8 hours per day, shows a weekly operation of mines at an average of 36J4 hours. But this assumption is not exactly correct, for the reason that it is not very often that the miners work the full 8 hours per day. There are many explanations for this, but it is not pertinent to this statement to discuss them now, as the important thing to consider is whether a 30-hour week would be for the best interest of not only the men themselves, but the public or country in general.

A new technique for the recovery of palladium and platinum and sludge from go12 electrolyte eliminates many of the drawbacks of the zinc-dust cementation process. In the electrolytic refining of gold by the Wohwill method, the electrolyte contains about 100 gpl gold as AuCl, and 100 gpl free hydrochloric acid. Any palladium and platinum contained in impure gold dissolve and accumulate in the electrolyte. When their concentration approaches that of gold, it becomes desirable to discard the electrolyte and to recover the gold and the palladium and platinum. As practiced at Canadian Copper Refiners until recently, discarded electrolyte was treated with sulfur dioxide to precipitate the gold. 2AuCl3 + 6H2O + 3SO2 —2Au + 6HC1 + 3H2SO4 The gold precipitate was filtered off, washed with water, and melted with scrap anodes. The wash water was added to the gold-free filtrate and treated with zinc dust to cement the palladium and platinum. PdCl2 + Zn — Pd + ZnCl2 PtCl4 + 2Zn—Pt + 2ZnCl2 The precipitate was separated and sold as Pd-Pt concentrate, and the barren filtrate and wash water were discarded. The receipts of palladium and platinum at this company were too small to warrant their refining. The process suffered from a number of disadvantages. Handling the gold-free solution was disagreeable, as it was laden with sulfur dioxide even after blowing with air overnight. Subsequent treatment with zinc dust was also troublesome. A large excess of zinc dust was required. Spray, acid mist, and vigorous evolution of hydrogen accompanied the reaction. The Pd-Pt precipitate was grossly contaminated with occluded unreacted zinc and with yellow granules of sulfur, thought to be formed by the reduction of sulfur dioxide and its derivatives. Repeated boiling of the precipitate with hydrochloric acid and washing with water decreased somewhat, but did not eliminate, the zinc. After drying overnight, the precipitate hardened to a clinkerlike mass that was difficult to grind. Grinding, handling, and packing created heavy dusting. Even weighing in an analytical balance generated dust, indicating that the powder was easily charged with static electricity. The total palladium and platinum content of the powder varied from 56 to 72 pct, with an average of 65 pct. The powder dissolved in aqua regia with difficulty, leaving a small amount of insoluble residue. However, the main drawback of the process was the strongly hygroscopic Pd-Pt product. The powder showed a marked though erratic increase in weight and a corresponding decrease in assay on exposure to air, even during the course of laboratory analysis. Such changes were the source of disagreement between Canadian Copper Refiners and the buyers of concentrate. The cause of the change in weight is believed to be hydrogen, liberated by the action of zinc dust on hydrochloric acid. Some of this hydrogen was adsorbed so strongly by the precipitate that it could not be driven off during the drying. On exposure to air it oxidized catalytically, forming water. Experiments soon showed that the entire process of treatment of discarded electrolyte then in use would have to be changed. A small quantity of apparatus was moved into the gold room, and experimentation was held to a minimum compatible with the development of a new process. PALLADIUM AND PLATINUM PRECIPITATION It was thought that zinc could be replaced with a reagent other than a hydrogen-evolving metal. Semiquantitative experiments showed that platinum and palladium could be precipitated completely from the gold-free solutions with such well-known reagents as sodium formate, formic acid, formaldehyde, and paraformaldehyde. Sodium formate was the preferred reagent, since the other three are volatile and somewhat toxic. The gold-free solutions used were those saturated with sulfur dioxide, partly freed of sulfur dioxide by aerating overnight, completely freed by boiling, as well as strongly and weakly acidic, neutral, and alkaline solutions. The reactions are complex and can be represented by these over-all equations: PdC1, + HCOONa — Pd + NaCl + HC1 + Co2 PtCl4 + 2HCOONa — Pt + 2NaCl + 2HC1 + 2CCX, Strongly acidic solutions required as much as five times the theoretical amount of sodium formate as did solutions neutralized to pH 4.5. AN interesting study of the application of air-, conditioning to the problem of mine ventilation and cooling can be found on the Witwatersrand in South Africa. Here there are a large number of deep mines in a relatively small area. Due to the nature of the reef, many mines are working at a depth of 6000 ft. and some have gone down to 8000 and 9000 ft. below the surface. At such depths, even in a country geologically as old as Africa, the virgin rock temperature approaches 110°F. The flow of heat from the- rock to the ventilation air is tremendous though the shaft or drift may have been open to ventilation for some years. In addition, there is the heat produced by machinery, lights, and men at work and the heat of adiabatic compression of air introduced into the mine. The difference in atmosphere pressure between the collar of a shaft and a level 6000 ft. below is nearly 3lb. per sq. in., resulting in an increase in heat content of nearly four B.T.U. per pound of air delivered to the mine at surface. Further the exclusive use of wet mining to reduce the incidence of miner?s phthisis increases the latent- heat content of the air.

Since the ore mined in the Grants-Ambrosia Lake uranium area is taken from a water-saturated sandstone formation, part of the milling operation includes a drying process. The authors discuss the merits and disadvantages of two methods: natural drying and mechanical gas-fired drying; operating and cost data are included. In the Grants-Ambrosia Lake uranium area, approximately 7000 tons of ore are mined each day from a water-saturated sandstone formation. This ore is sampled and treated at four separate milling operations. Prior to the design and initial construction of the milling facilities, very little was known as to the physical properties of the ore which would be handled in the sampling and crushing facilities at the mills. All four mills initially were constructed without ore-drying facilities. As mining proceeded, it was determined that, even after drying the ore in place by use of drainage development underground, the moisture content of the ore as hoisted averaged approximately 18 pct. Actually, some of the mines produced ores which resembled cream-of-wheat in character and had a moisture content in excess of 24 pct. Each of the four mills had a differently designed sampling and crushing plant; therefore, the moisture content of the ores had varying adverse effects upon the operation of the plants. It was determined after some experience that most of the sampling and crushing facilities could not economically handle ore if the moisture content was greater than 10 pct—one operator considers 12 pct moisture as a maximum. In all of the plants, moisture content over 8 pct increases costs to some extent. In addition to the added sampling and crushing costs, some of the mills were located 15 to 20 miles from the mines and the high moisture content of the ores increased the haulage costs from the mine to the mill. It was generally conceded that it was necessary to employ some method to reduce the moisture content of the ore prior to sampling. Several methods were considered: 1) natural drying at the mine site, 2) mechanical gas-fired drying at the mill site, 3) mechanical gas-fired drying at the mine site, 4) radiant heating on concrete clabs, and 5) infrared shed drying. After preliminary investigation all possibilities but natural drying and mechanical gas-fired drying at the mill site were eliminated. NATURAL DRYING A cooperative feasibility study was conducted on the natural drying method. This study indicated the following: 1) During summer months May through September, ore piled 4-ft deep would dry from +20 to +10 pct HzO in 30 days with no mechanical turning. 2) In the first four days after piling a reduction of 5 to 7 pct total moisture content was accomplished by drainage and absorption of the water into the underlying ground on which the ore was piled, providing the ground surface absorption rates approached 10 gal per sq ft per day. After the first four days the decrease of moisture caused by drainage was practically nonexistent. 3) In the summer months drying by evaporation amounted to approximately 0.1 pct decrease in total moisture per day and mechanical turning of the ore could increase this as much as three times. 4) Climatic conditions of the area indicated that: a) Air temperatures averaged 64' May, June, July, August, September; 41" October, November, December, March, April; 31" January, February. b) Average rain fall was 10 in. with 40 pct of this occurring during July and August. c) Only on very rare occasions were there over five consecutive days with below freezing temperatures. d) The annual evaporation rate was approximately 75 in. On the basis of this study, two of the mill operations decided to attempt to meet the moisture specifications by natural drying supplemented by mechanical turning. The other two operations decided upon rotary gas-fired drying at the mill site. The natural drying method has been quite successful in practice. The ore running approximately 18 pct moisture is trucked from the head frame and piled in rows about 6 ft wide, 3 1/2 ft deep, 5 feet apart during the months of May through September. Discovery of the Delbridge massive sulfide deposit in the Noranda district of Quebec resulted from an appreciation of the significance of a mercury leakage halo as a lithochemical pathfinder to blind ore. Its location, relative to a geologically inferred ore-bearing horizon within complex volcanic stratigraphy was also a factor. Systematic sampling of microfractures present in outcrops delineated a diagnostic anomaly, drawing attention to an area considered prospective for buried ore. The massive sulfide deposit was subsequently found to be blind and topped at the 110-m (360-ft) level.
