FRONTIERS of geological knowledge retreated further this past year before an ever-widening geophysical attack, as governments and endowed institutions continued to take an increasing practical interest in the geophysical line of approach to the study of earth phenomena. A year ago I opened this annual review with a brief account of the efforts to discover what formations lie concealed beneath the deep sediments which form the superficial portions of the Continental Shelf off the eastern United States. That work was but the beginning, and 1938 saw its continuation and expansion. With the assistance of a Guggenheim Fellowship, Maurice Ewing pushed his researches in the development of instruments and techniques for deep-sea seismic refraction studies. Ewing's early refraction profile from the Virginia Capes to the edge of the Continental Shelf has been followed by a similar traverse in Great Britain from the coast of Cornwall to the edge of the Continental Shelf southwest of England. This showed that the thickness of the sedimentary mantle and the rates of slope of the basement surfaces there are comparable to those in the Virginia Cape district.

GROUND movement from mining, whether it be for coal, metal, industrial minerals, or .oil, will always present many difficult problems. These are especially serious when valuable surface improvements may be badly damaged. The mine itself, if mining methods are not suitable to the formation, is subject to heavy falls of the main roof in the working places; and with certain structural conditions the movements may cause in coal mines disastrous bumps and outbursts of gas, and in deep metal mines rock bursts. In open-cut work rock and earth slides may result. Absolute prevention of ground movement from mining is impossible unless large pillars are left unmined,

The Tuscarora mining district, which has been highly productive of gold and silver ores in past years, is situated about 50 miles north- west of Elko, Nevada. The town of Tuscarora lies at an altitude of about 6,000 ft on the west side of the Independence Valley. Precipitation, particularly the winter snowfall, is considerably greater than in many other parts of Nevada, and temperatures are lower. From Tuscarora can be seen-across Independence Valley in the mountains to the east, a distance of about 12 miles, the Freeport Minerals Jerritt Canyon mine, which seems to be-destined to become one of the great gold mines in the western hemisphere. Tuscarora, a gold and silver camp, was active from the early 1870s to 1903 and produced about $10 million in those 30 years. Ten major mines and several smaller ones were operated in an area of about 1.45 square kilometers (one-half squaremile). The deepest shafts were only 230 m (750 ft) but most of the ore came from about the 105 m (350 ft) levels. Mineralization above the water table, at about 30 m (100 ft), was mostly native silver and cerargerite with free gold. Below the water table the ore was rich in sulfides including argentite, stephanite, proustite, pyrargyrite, enargite, arsenopyrite, bornite, chalcopyrite, pyrite, sphalerite and galena. A number of the properties contain sizeable dumps of what was con- sidered waste rock when it was mined. These dumps aggregate over 408,000 mt (450,000 st) with one dump, the Navajo, containing over one-third of the total. A few grab samples taken in the summer of 1978 from some of the dumps indicated interesting silver values with minor gold content. AgAu Exploration Ltd., was organized to explore and develop these dumps into a heap leaching operation. In the fall of 1978 a campaign was started to lease, with front money payments on a royalty basis, three groups of claims on which were located a few hundred thousand tons of dumps. In September and October of 1978, a systematic program of sampling was started on the Navajo dump which was most favorably situated in that it was near to an area which would furnish good sites for heap leaching pads. At the time it was fully recognized that sampling of dumps was a most difficult problem. Because of the topography on which they were situated and the manner in which they were formed, each dump required its own special sampling technique.

INTRODUCTION Chevron's Uranium Mill is located near Panna Maria, Texas; 70 miles southeast of San Antonio. Designed by Kaiser Engineering, the Mill will process a nominal 2500 dry T.P.D. of uranium bearing ore containing 15% uncombined moisture. Earl Torgerson, San Mateo, California, is the consulting metallurgist on process design. Feed to the plant consists of a mixture of high, medium and low grade sandy day ore; the average grade of the ore will be 0.7% throughout the life of the project. The ore is delivered to the mill via truck and stored by type in individual piles on a flat storage area. The ore is fed by conveyor to a semi-autogenous grinding mill. The SAG mill discharge slurry is pumped either to a storage tank or to the first of five mechanically agitated leach tanks where both H2SO and NaC103 are added. Following leaching, the slurry is mixed with thickener No. 2 overflow before being pumped to a six-thickener, countercurrent decantation circuit where the solution containing uranium is separated from the leach residue. The residue is washed essentially free of solubilized U308 values at the sixth thickener and discharged to an adjacent tailings pond. The first thickener overflow, containing approximately 0.4 grams U308 per liter, is filtered for clarification and sent to the liquid ion exchange (solvent extraction) section. The pregnant aqueous solution is mixed with organic solvent containing amine on which the complex uranyl sulfate ions are absorbed. The immiscible aqueous and organic solutions are mixed and separated in each of the four stages of solvent extraction. The final pregnant organic is directed to a stripping section. A strip solution containing (NH4)2S04 (ammonium sulfate) and NH4C1 (ammonium chloride) is contacted and separated from the organic in each of the four mixer-settler units. The strip solution is mixed with NH3 and the uranium precipitates along with trace amounts of sulfate, chloride, and ammonia. After washing in a thickener, the uranium precipitate or yellowcake is centrifuged and dried in a multiple hearth roaster. Overflow from the yellowcake thickener is recycled back to the stripping section of the solvent extraction circuit. The dried yellowcake concentrate contains more than 98% U308; diluents include H20, ammonia, chloride, etc.. Impurity concentratons in the product are sufficiently low, after drying, to permit direct shipment to refinement installations. ORE RECEIVING Ore from one or more mines will be stored on a pad adjacent to the uranium processing mill. Ore stored in the area may total 200,000 tons or more, which is equivalent to over a two month treatment reserve for the mill. In addition to providing surge capacity, the proposed storage facility permits natural oxidation of the ore and affords an area which, in turn, improve plant U308 recovery and reduces consumption of oxidizing reagents. The uranium bearing ore is segregated at the storage area into several distinct types. One group can be identified by its sandy, clay-like matrix and will be distinguished by its U308 concentration of high, medium, or low. Other ores contain substantial quantities of carbonaceous shale, typical of ore in the area. Feed is recovered from any one or combination of piles, in accordance with operating requirements and recovery factors. The run-of-mine ore, at 15% moisture, is transferred to a stationary, 24-inch by 24-inch grizzly. Undersize material falls into a 280-ton surge hopper located below grade, while oversize material is removed for preliminary size reduction. A sump-pump is located at the reclaim hopper to recover excess mositure and ore spillage for processing. Plant feed is continuously drawn from beneath the hopper at an average rate of 120 tons per hour by means of an apron feeder. The hopper is equipped with a low level safety system to protect the apron feeder assemble. The ore is transferred to a belt conveyor, elevated and discharged into a semi-autogeneous grinding (SAG) mill. Water addition at the discharge point is automatically controlled by a feed rate, moisture analyzer system located on the belt conveyor. GRINDING Minus 24-inch ore, at a rate of 120 mosit tons per hour and cyclone underflow at a rate of 137 moist tons per hour are combined with a controlled 186 gallons per minute fresh, warm plant process water. The mixture, at an average 68% solids, is fed to the SAG mill. The viscous mass is subjected to grinding at a temperature moderately above ambient resulting from use of the 140ºF well water. The 16.5'x5.0' Marcy Mill is driven by a 500 H.P. A.C. Motor. The mill will rotate at 73.4% of critical speed or 14.06 R.P.M. Eight percent of the mill's volume will be occupied by steel grinding balls; 22% by pulp. The mill is designed to rotate in either direction, in order to obtain maximum lifter and liner life. The SAG mill is equipped with a trommel having ½ -inch slots for removal of oversize material at its discharge and the large or oversize material is collected and either recirculated periodically or discarded. The undersize slurry is diluted to 64% solids with the addition of hot well water or mine water to the mill discharge sump. The flow is automatically controlled utilizing data from a gamma density meter. The slurry from the mill discharge sump is pumped to hydrocyclones to classify the particles. Analysis of ball and pulp flow in ball mills indicates that three factors may become critical with increasing mill diameters: ball size, fraction critical speed, and average pulp flow velocities. Ball diameters may need to be decreased and fraction critical speeds increased with ores which show decreased breakage rate coefficients above 1.2 mm (14 mesh). With 5.5-m (18 ft) and larger mills at higher circulating loads, pulp flow velocities may become capacity limiting and also may limit increases in ball mill diameters.

INTRODUCTION Run-of-mine (ROM) coal generally falls into two major groups, that from underground mining (continuous mining machines) and that from strip mining. Continuous miners produce a finer product and strip mining a coarser product that is crushed to produce the desired size. Further size reduction depends on the proposed use or uses for the coal. For example, for pulverized coal power plants as a rough general rule, the coal is ground or pulverized to 80% less than 200 mesh (0.075 mrn) before it is blown into the boiler furnace as a coal-air suspension. For solvent-refined coal processes, the desired size is about <30 mesh ( <0.60 mm) ; in fluidized bed uses, the coal is typically < in. ( < 1.6 mm); for Lurgi pressure gasifiers, the desired size is 1-2 1/2 in. (25-63 mm). Coal preparation plants typically work with a coarse size fraction of 6x1 1/4 in. (15Ox32mm). It seems probable that the next decades will see much wider application of coal cleaning before use and that the stages of crushing and pulverization from ROM coal to end use will be integrated with coal cleaning processes. The stepped-up pace of US open-pit and surface mining during the 1970&apos;s is a direct response by mining firms and equipment manufacturers to rising costs and declining ore grades. In the race for bigger and more efficient machines, rotary drills have emerged as the foremost leader in primary drilling at major US surface operations. At least 12 different manufacturers now offer rotary rigs in the 102- mm-diam. (4-in.) or greater blasthole size range. With capital investment for the larger units quickly approaching $1 million, the question is asked, "What&apos;s been the performance record to date of rotary drill rigs operating in North America?" To answer that question, a comprehensive study of rotary blasthole drills was conducted which qualitatively reveals various problem areas inherent in the rotary drill market and indicates some new directions for improvement.

In the fall of 1969, ASARCO and Newmont Mining Co. began the design of the 700tpd concentrator at their Black Cloud shaft located near Leadville, Colo. The concentractor would treat by flotation a Pb-Zn-Ag ore containing minor gold values. Flowsheet design was based on laboratory test work performed at the Minerals Research Testing Laboratory of ASARCO. Since the concentrator is located at an elevation of 11,000 ft, cold weather was a major factor in design considerations. The original capacity was designed as 700 tpd but for various reasons an ultimate capacity of 1,000 tpd was desired. This necessitated special consideration in the design of several areas, particularly the grinding circuit. The grinding circuit chosen was a single 9 X 12 ball mill operating in closed circuit with one 20-in. cyclone. The ball mill will operate at low speed and as an overflow type originally. The mill can be speeded up and converted to grate type for handling the larger tonnage when required. Thickeners and filters were oversized and space was left for additional flotation cells in order to handle the increased tonnage in these areas. Pumps were sized so that they could handle the increased tonnage by increasing their speed. Construction began in May 1970; the Black Cloud concentrator went on-stream in April 1791.

AT a luncheon attended by engineering leaders representing every section of the country, Col. Arthur S. Dwight, president of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, and Charles F. Rand, chairman of the Engineering Foundation, past president of the Insti-tute and its present treasurer, on Thursday, July 20, were decorated with the Croix de Chevalier de la Legion d&apos;Honneur by the French Government for distinguished service in engineering tending to closer and more felici-tous relations between the two countries. The decorations were conferred by Consul General Gaston Liebert. In a speech extolling the war work of the American engineer, M. Liebert declared that Germany had been definitely foiled in her attempt to cripple France industrially for a generation by wrecking the coal mines of northern France. Three-fourths of these mines, M. Liebert said, were in full working order and the remainder will be in complete operation within two years. The Germans thought that it would take from 15 to 20 years to accomplish this. M. Liebert said that reconstruction is going on rapidly in northern France, two-thirds of whose indus-tries are now working. The French Government, he said, is planning water-power improvement on a vast scale, which will soon make unnecessary for France to import a single ton of coal. He urged that French students be sent to America to study engineering. In presenting the decorations, Consul General Liebert eulogized Colonel Dwight and Mr. Rand as personify-ing the spirit and service of the American engineer, which, he said, was a powerful factor in the victory over Germany. He spoke of the growing friendliness between the United States and France and described this ceremony as an epoch in international relations. Calvin W. Rice, secretary of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, who presided, repeated that international unity among engineers was the dream of Andrew Carnegie, who saw in the efforts of the engineer and the scientist the hope of civilization. Mr. Rice said in part: In the Declaration of Independence occurs the statement that all men are created free and equal. Jefferson was familiar with the writings of Rousseau. In fact, he was a remarkable linguist notwithstanding that he wrote the Declaration of Independence when only 32 years of age. He was one of the very few ambassa-dors in the history of the United States who could speak the language of the country to which they were sent. The interpretation of the passage in the Declaration of Independence is that all men have equal opportunity, not that they are born with equal ability.

A section of unstable overburden that has hampered an all-dragline mining operations at Texasgulf&apos;s phosphate mine in eastern North Carolina, is being successfully removed by hydraulic dredging. Blocks are dredged, drained, and developed ahead of two large draglines that strip the remaining overburden and mine the 12-m section of ore. Dredging assistance has increased ore production, increased ore recoveries to a maximum, reduced unit costs, and has made it possible to reclaim mined-over land that would be left underwater mined by all dragline methods.

W. C. Leslie (Edgar C. Bain Laboratory for Funda mental Research)—This investigation, with its com bination of high-purity metal, calorimetry, and metallography, will serve as a model for annealing studies for a long time to come. The evidence for a competition between recovery and recrystalliza-tion is particularly convincing. The demonstration of edge-nucleated recrystallization was so clear that it may obscure the necessity for other types of "nucleation" sites; otherwise, single crystals of aluminum could not be recrystallized after cold work. At least three types of sites have been found to operate in iron: 1) high-angle boundaries, probably in the same manner as in aluminum, 2) matrix sites, 3) inclusions or second-phase particles. In each instance, the cells developed during cold work and perfected during recovery are the "nucle for recrystallization. Observations by ourselves and others of the dislocation structure of cold-worked metals and of the structural changes that occur during annealing have led us to doubt the validity of the basic assumption of the Lucke-Detert theory, and of the modification developed by Gordon and Vandermeer, that during recrystallization of a metal containing foreign elements in solid solution a high-angle boundary is ad vancing into a cold-worked matrix having a random distribution of solute atoms. We contend that an es sential part of the cold-working and annealing of solid solution alloys is the trapping of solute atoms by the low-energy "wells" afforded by individual dislocations and by dislocation arrays. If cells are formed during cold work, the cell walls are stabilized by this concentration of solute atoms. Thus, solutes inhibit recrystallization not only by decreas-ing the rate of high-angle boundary migration, but also by preventing the formation of high-angle boundaries by subgrain growth or coalescence, i.e., solutes can inhibit both "nucleation" and growth. In addition to stabilizing the dislocation Structure, the solute-dislocation interactions may produce clusters of solute atoms which are not as readily assimilated into the recrystallized grains as are individual solute atoms. There is an additional complication. The dislocation structure formed upon cold working a dilute solid solution may not be the same as that formed during cold working of the pure solvent metal. The solute can either enhance or minimize the formation of cells during cold working. Both effects have been observed in binary alloys of iron. The annealing process is inextricably connected with the mechanisms of strain hardening and solid solution hardening. Although the correlation between experimental boundary migration rates and the predictions made from the theoretical equations are impressive, it should be mentioned that in at least four other instances (Pb-Ag and pb-Au,15, Fe-Mn,16, Fe-Mo)17 the agreement was rather poor. In brief, while it is probable that the migration of high-angle boundaries is held back by solutes in the manner described, this is only a partial explanation of the total effect of solutes upon recrystallization of cold-worked alloys. Paul Gordon and R. A. Vandermeer (author&apos;s reply)— The authors first wish to thank Dr. Leslie for his compliments of this work. It is perhaps worth pointing out that some of Dr. Leslie&apos;s remarks are directed toward subject matter covered in two earlier papers in our work.18,19 We agree with Dr. Leslie&apos;s main contention that the exact nature of the metal structure in the vicinity of a boundary should have an effect on the boundary migration. The theory of Lucke and Detert does not take such detail into account, nor does it account for orientation effects on the migration rates. We assume that since our data checks the theory so well, the effects of detailed structure are statistically averaged out by the polycrystalline techniques used just as are the effects of orientation factors.

IN the flotation of iron ores laurylamine derivatives have been used for considerable time.1, 2&apos; To effect satisfactory separation of the gangue, pre-dominantly silica, from the iron oxide minerals, the addition of specific depressants for the iron oxides has been found necessary. Starches and starch products have been used for this purpose.V here is, however, very little published information on the effects of these materials and other variables on this process. In some cases it has been found that prior acid scrubbing and desliming are essential," and depending upon the efficiency of the subsequent washing step, there will be accompanying changes in pH. It was the object of this investigation to test and observe the effects of the above factor as well as to examine and compare the action of various starches and starch products. Ore Preparation The ore used in this experiment was a wash-ore tailing obtained from the western Mesabi range. Microscopic examination and x-ray analysis of the ore showed it to consist of hematite, goethite, and quartz. Physical properties of the iron minerals ranged from hard and crystalline to earthy and ocherous. The quartz grains were discolored either because of iron-oxide inclusions or because of a sur-face coating of iron oxide. The ore assayed 27.52

IT is both a pleasure and an honor to be a guest of the Institute and I thank you, Mr. President and fellow-members, for giving. me the opportunity of meeting you this evening. My esteemed friend, President Smith, has requested me to do a bit of "reminiscing" as to the earlier years of my career as a mining engineer, which has now covered a period of fifty years. Let me reassure you by promising that my narrative will not include all the experiences I have had over that long period. You will, I trust, pardon what might seem egotistical but I do not see how a personal narrative could well be otherwise.

The Viburnum ore trend is the largest, single known ore body of lead in the world. Four well-known mining companies operate in the trend, which is approximately 64 km (40 miles) long and up to 610 m (2,000 ft) wide, located some 121 km (75 miles) southwest of St. Louis, MO. Total production from the mines for 1979 was 33 kt/d (36,000 tons) of ore or 472 kt/a (520,350 tons) of lead and coproduct metal. The district is the number one producer of lead, providing 90% of the United States&apos; output with its coproducts, zinc ranking second, and copper and silver both ranking sixth in total US output. Mining is done in a stratiform deposit approximately 305 m (1,000 ft) in depth with the host rock principally dolomite. Ore is mined in large open stopes by the method commonly referred to as room-and-pillar mining. Mining methods and equipment are fairly similar, with the mines classified as trackless, all mining equipment operates on rubber tires. This paper will present a description of the different methods and equipment used to move ore from the active heading underground to the ore shaft for hoisting to the surface. Basically, three methods are incorporated: front-end loader and truck haulage combination; front-end loader and truck, with main line track haulage combination; and front-end loader and truck, with conveyor haulage combination. The logistics of each system, such as method of use, equipment specifications, ore handling rate, and those cost figures that could be made public, will be included.

In order to find an empirical relation between a quantity F and (m) independent variables or factors, each of which take (n) different values or levels, it is necessary to conduct nm different experiments (all possible combinations of the factors), each of which has to be repeated a few times (usually five) due to the scattering of the data. The total number of such experiments is very large, thus for example, when m = 4 and n = 5, it is equal to 5.54 = 3125; and very rarely is it possible to conduct such a number of experiments. Various possible methods of planning partial experiments are illustrated in Fig. 1. Each method shows a large combinative square consisting of five columns and five rows of middle squares, each of which, in turn, is further divided into five columns and five rows of cells. Such a partition corresponds to a plan of an experiment with four factors, each of which takes five different levels. The blackened cells indicate the combination of factors in a partial experiment. The total number of experiments is reduced on the basis of the following considerations: a) The effect of only a few levels of some factors is studied (Fig. la). Such an investigation gives no information on the effect of some factors, therefore it cannot be accepted as satisfactory; b) By reducing the number of levels of each factor; in such a case it is not possible to obtain an empirical relationship, but only whether some factors have an effect. This is evidently inadequate;

A method is described for using radioactive tracer for the direct determination of ionic mobility in a molten electrolyte. The ionic mobility of Fe" in silica-saturated iron silicate is found to be 0.0009 (*0.0002) cm2 sec &apos; volt L at 1250°C. eLECTROCHEMICAL studies&apos;, &apos; of molten iron eE oxide and iron silicates have shown some ionic conductivity at all compositions. The current efficiency in electrolysis increases with the concentration of silica to a maximum of 90 pct at about 34 pet SiO,.
