In all, 127 producing oil wells, 8 producing gas wells and 212 dry holes were drilled during 1936 in the Central Texas area; 76 wells in Bexar County, 62 in Caldwell County, 44 in Guadalupe County, 22 in Williamson County, 20 in Navarro County and 20 in Frio County. Less than 20 were drilled in each of the other counties and none at all in Ellis, Hill, Bosque, Coryell, Lampasas, Burnet, Llano, Kennedy, Mason, Real, Kinney and Uvalde Counties. The Pearsall-Austin chalk field in Frio County and the Zoboroski field in Guadalupe County were the only new discoveries and there were no important extensions to old fields. In this report Corsicana, Mildred (Elm Ridge), Angus-Edens-Hodge, Burke, and Rice-Oil Ridge, all shallow Navarro County stripper fields, are grouped together under the name of Corsicana. This grouping follows that of the Railroad Commission of Texas, thus facilitating the gathering of production data. A map showing the location of the oil and gas fields in the Central Texas Area was published in Volume 114 of the A.I.M.E. TranBactions, page 380. New Fields Pearsall-Austin Chalk.—The Amerada Petroleum Corporation completed 13 Austin chalk wells during 1936 on the large Amerada-Rycade block in Frio County. Other companies drilled two dry holes to the Austin chalk in this vicinity. Not enough wells were drilled to give control of the structure but it appears to be a nose plunging in a west-southwest direction. A second deep test is being drilled in the Pearsall area and at this writing has cemented off a show of oil and gas in the Edwards limestone. The Humble Oil and Refining Co. is building a 6-in. pipe line from Lytle, Tex., to serve the Pearsall field. Zoboroski.—Actual discovery of the Zoboroski field was made by W. J. Walton et al. in 1931. The discovery well, Anton Zoboroski No. 1, was a small producer making but from 3 to 5 bbl. per day, which was used locally for fuel oil. THE present organization of Copper Queen employ-ees, known as the Employees' Conference Com-mittee, is really an outgrowth of the former Grievance Committee, which, in turn, had developed from the original Hospital Committee. The relatively small membership of these older organizations, the practical limitation of their activities to the presenting of grievances, and their lack of initiating powers, were the principal defects which the plan now in operation seeks to overcome. A somewhat parallel scheme was instituted in our Sacramento Hill division about four years ago; this gradually developed into the Ways and Means Committee, which, in addition to providing a forum for the discussion of operating problems, was instrumental in establishing an excellent and mutually satisfactory bonus system. Before recommending adoption of the plan now in force, we made extensive inquiries among those who have had any experience in such matters, and ended by proposing a modification of a scheme developed by John Leitch,1 which was characterized by its similarity to the constitution of the Federal Government. As finally remodeled, the. plan was submitted to vote of the entire working forces at the Copper Queen mines, and was adopted by them in May, 1920. Mining opera-tions since that date have been so interrupted that it is scarcely possible to state exactly what the results have been. The following quotations are from a printed pamphlet containing the constitution of the organization, as finally adopted. The first extract is from a letter addressed by the management to the employees: The plan submitted for your approval and adoption is modeled after the constitution of our own country, under which every individual is given an opportunity for advancement, according to his ability and determination, and every citizen is given a voice in the laws that shall govern him. So it is to encourage the individual employee in advancement, and to give him a voice in making the rules that shall govern his conduct, that we favor the adoption of the proposed constitution.

The aging characteristics of an Fe-11 at. pct Mo alloy have been studied by means of light metallography together with density, Young&apos;s modulus, and hardness measurements. The results were consistent with the precipitation of a single intermetallic compound during aging; overaging was slow relative to that in other iron-based binary alloys. The solution treatment temperature had a small effect on the rate of hardening whereas deformation prior to aging had a marked effect on both the rate of hardening and the peak hardness. The density data indicate that the compound precipitated is Fe3MO2 and not the Laves phase Fe2Mo. Analysis of the modulus and density results gave values for the time exponent for precipitate growth of approximately 1.0 and 1.5 for the alloy aged with and without prior deformation, respectively. DETAILED studies of precipitation hardening in bcc matrices have been confined largely to the effects of carbides and nitrides. In view of this and the growing technological interest in intermetallic compound strengthening, e.g., in maraging steels, a study of precipitation in iron-based alloys with a low interstitial content has been undertaken. This paper is concerned with the aging behavior of an Fe-11 at. pct Mo alloy; the mechanical behavior of the alloy will be reported later. The early work of sykes on Fe-Mo alloys showed that precipitation of the intermetallic compound was accompanied by an increase in hardness and a decrease in volume of the material. More recent surveys of the strengthening associated with precipitation have been made3-5 and, in particular, Elsen and wassermann4 showed that deformation prior to aging increased the rate of hardening. These latter workers also followed the precipitation process by means of dilatometry, electrical resistivity, and lattice parameter measurements. Their results confirmed that there is a decrease in volume on aging. Except for the work of Hornbogen on an Fe-20 at. pct Mo alloy, neither clustering nor the precipitation of a nonequilibrium phase has been observed in Fe-Mo alloys. Studies of alloys of lower molybdenum content475 indicate that the equilibrium intermetallic compound is precipitated during aging. However, there is some doubt concerning the nature of the equilibrium precipitate phase. According to the phase diagram constructed by Hansen,8 the phase should be precipitated. This phase has a rhombohedra1 crystal structure which is characterized by the formula Fe706,&apos; although the composition of the molybdenum-rich boundary corresponds approximately to Fe3Mo2. The version of the diagram proposed by Sinha, Buckley, and Hume-Rother indicates that the A phase, a Laves phase Fe2Mo, should be precipitated. Their observation of a Laves phase supports the earlier findings of Bechtoldt and Vacher,13 although, in a recent study of the system by means of diffusion couples, Rawlings and Newey did not detect the phase. The work presented here describes the effect of solution-treatment temperature, aging temperature, and prior deformation on the aging characteristics of the alloy as revealed by light metallography together with hardness, density, and Young&apos;s modulus measurements. In addition the density data are used in an attempt to determine the compound precipitated during aging. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A 29-kg ingot of the alloy was cast at R.A.R.D.E., Fort Halstead, from deoxidized, Japanese electrolytic iron and sintered molybdenum. The ingot was homogenized for 6 hr at 1473°K and then worked, with intermediate anneals, into 6- and 16-mm-diam rods and 6-mm plate. Chemical analysis of the alloy gave, wt pct: Mo, 17.5 (11 at. pct); C, 0.003; Si, 0.002; S, 0.005; P, <0.002; and02, 0.0098. Solution treatments were carried out under a dynamic argon atmosphere in a vertical, "crusilite" element, furnace which had a facility for rapid quenching into iced water. Except for the study of the effect of solution treatment temperature, all specimens were solution-treated at 1573" * 2°K for 1 hr. Salt baths were used for the aging treatments. Specimens for hardness, density, and Young&apos;s modulus measurements were produced, after heat treatment, from the stock rod or bar using a precision silicon carbide slitting wheel. As described later, the quenching treatment produced local plastic strain in the stock material; consequently, care was taken to ensure that the specimens were not prepared from these regions. Those specimens used in the studies of the effects of prior deformation on the aging behavior were strained in compression in a Denison universal testing machine. Specimens for light metallographic observations were mechanically polished on successively finer grades of diamond paste down to and then etched in either alcoholic ferric chloride or in a 2 pct nital solution. Vickers diamond pyramid hardness data were obtained using a 30-kg load. At least five impressions were averaged for each determination. Density measurements were made using a displacement technique in which each specimen was weighed in air and in dibromoethane at 296°K. The specimens were cylindrical and weighed 3 to 4 g; all weighings were made on a balance reading to 1 x 10"5 g. For each specimen the mean value of five weighings was used to calculate the density. The density of the dibromoethane was determined using the displacement procedure and a standard nickel specimen. The error in an absolute density value was estimated to be HI.01 pct. THE increased use of sintering for the beneficiation of iron ores and the reclaiming of flue dust creates a lively interest in sintering costs and, economics. The character of material sintered and geographical location of plants so radically alter sintering costs and economics that it is well to understand at least the basic elements which control such changes. LOG washers have been used for many years in the washing of clay iron ores, phosphate rock and manganese ores, but not until the past 15 years have they been employed to any extent in the preparation of aggregate materials and fluxing stone. For a machine of such importance where tenacious clay or soft rock must be eliminated, there are few data generally available. The purpose of this paper is to set forth the results obtained from several operations, together with a few suggestions for planning a specific installation. Where the material to be washed out consists of loose surface soil, silt, or small amounts of quickly soluble clay, there is little competition with other forms of washers, because greater power and maintenance are required for the operation of log washers, but where the foreign matter is a stiff clay, such as occurs with high-calcium limestones and in marginal gravel deposits, the ability of other kinds of washers to eliminate com-pletely the hard clay balls is at least uncertain. Then the log washer comes into its own field, for with the breaking and churning action of the logs it will clean out the toughest clay. Even with material from the hydraulic dredge, if it contains tough clay, the log washer is desirable unless the gravel is subjected to a costly soaking and rehandling process. Recently there has been a considerable development in other types of machines to accomplish these results but it is not within the scope of this paper to make comparisons between competitive types, but to present the best obtainable data on log washers only. From the primitive design that gave it its name, a long log hewn from a tree, with paddles forged to shape from strap iron and attached by lag screws, the log washer has gradually been developed to the present all-steel type. As now manufactured, the log washer consists essentially of two built-up logs on which are mounted a series of paddles, carried by shafts fitted at the ends of the logs on bearings fastened outside the enclosing steel box, or trough, which is set at an angle of about 5° to 10° and into which the material is fed. The torsion effusion method has been used to measure the vapor pressure of thallium over pure thallium in the temperature range 931" to 996&apos;k The resulting 100 cal per g-atom is in excellent agreement with previous values. Vapor pressures of T1 above seven Ag-Tl alloys ranging from 33 to 90 at. pct T1 were measured at 979K. Calculated silver activities show a positive deviation from Raoult&apos;s law, approaching ideality near the liquidus. Measured thallium activities scatter less than previous measurements using the electromotive force technique. Values for the silver component were calculated by Gibbs-Duhem integration. This paper reports the results of a study of the liquid Ag-T1 system by the torsion effusion method. The method has been discussed in detail previously1 and will be only briefly summarized here. The sample is contained in a cell which is suspended on a torsion wire. Vapors effusing from orifices on opposite sides of the cell exert a torque on the wire. The torque is related to the vapor pressure by the following relation: where D is the torsion constant of the wire, 4 the angle of torque, fl and f2 the correction factors determined by Freeman and seamy2 to account for orifice length, a1 and a2 the areas of the orifices, and ql and q2 the distances of the orifices from the axis of rotation. By using the same cell for pure thallium and the alloy, it follows that: so that most systematic errors are eliminated in determining the activities. EXPERIMENTAL 99.999+ pct T1 was obtained from the American Smelting and Refining Co. and 99.999 pct Ag was obtained from Cominco American, Inc. Seven Ag-T1 alloys, ranging in composition from x^\ = 0.33 to 0.90, were prepared by melting together weighed amounts of the pure metals in sealed, evacuated Vycor tubes and quenching the melts in water. The apparatus and graphite cells were the same as those used by Hawkins and Hultgren3 in their study of the Pb-Sn system. RESULTS Ten measurements were made on pure thallium in the temperature range 931" to 996K, and the results are presented in Table I. Values of were calculated using tabulated Gibbs (free) energy functions.4 No dependence of on temperature or orifice size was found, indicating that equilibrium was attained. Data for the Ag-T1 alloys are shown in Table 11. Values were smoothed with respect to composition by a plot of where . DISCUSSION The value = 43,520 * 100 cal per g-atom for pure thallium (95 pct uncertainty limit) is in excellent agreement with previous investigations.4 In the Ag-T1 system, this study shows positive deviations from Raoult&apos;s law at all compositions. Fig. l gives the phase diagram according to Hansen, and Fig. 2 presents the activity values measured in this study as well as those from electromotive force measurements at 950°K by Terpilowski, Kundys, and slaby.&apos;

THE province of Saskatchewan, situated in the center of the Great Plains region of Canada, has, like most prairie areas, an essentially agricultural economy. Most of its population of about 860,000 is located in the southern half of the province in the farming and ranching areas. To the north of the prairie is a broad forested belt supporting a considerable timbering industry, and the northern one third of the province is glaciated pre-Cambrian rock formation. This latter area is, relatively barren of vegetation, but the presence within it of a considerable variety of radioactive, noble and base metals, and industrial minerals has been shown by prospecting in recent years.1 Glacial Geology The Keewatin ice sheet, considered to have accumulated in the country to the west of Hudson Bay in Pleistocene time, covered at its maximum advancement almost all of Saskatchewan and extended south of the international boundary. Only in the Cypress Hills in the southwest and around Wood Mountain in the south central portion of the province did the preglacial formations escape the action for this glacial period. The bedrock of the plains and forest areas therefore is overlain by moraines and modified glacial drift, which vary in thickness from a few feet to 400 or 500 ft.2 Glacial action in the pre-Cambrian area of the province was largely erosional, most of the more recent formations and some of the pre-Cambrian rock being transported out of the area to the south and west. It has been estimated that about 13 pct of this area is composed of lakes and rivers not too adaptable to rail or water transportation, so that until the use of aviation for exploration purposes became general; development of the area was slow. To the south, the heavy. mantle of glacial drift has to some extent deterred the discovery of industrial minerals in the bedrock underlying the forest and prairie regions.3 At the same time, this drift contains numerous deposits of those most elementary and necessary industrial minerals, sand and gravel. Sedimentary Basin The major feature of the sedimentary deposits underlying the plains regions is the basinal structure known as the Moose Jaw syncline, which runs from the southeast corner of the province in a northwesterly direction. To the west. of this syncline the formations curve upward, then have been faulted and further upthrust to appear at the surface in the foothills of-the Rockies in Alberta; to the east and north they curve upward into Manitoba and northern Saskatchewan, but the surface contacts are covered mostly with glacial drift.2,3 The axis of the syncline dips to thee southeast, so that there is also an upward trend of the formations along the axis to the northwest. In illustration of the regional structure underlying the province, the pre-Cambrian basement has been logged in drillholes at the following depths in several locations: Ogema (south central), 9390 ft; Gronlid (northeast), 2599 ft; Vera (northwest), 4422 ft; Big River (north northwest), 2348 ft. Fig. 1 indicates the general surface geology of the province, ignoring such glacial overburden as may overlie many of the bedrock formations. Also indicated is the approximate location of the axis of the Moose Jaw syncline.4 Industrial Minerals Clays: The province is fortunate in possessing a widespread distribution of clays of ceramic value, ranging from those used for heavy structural products to the high grade pottery and china clays. Shales suitable for brick and tile production are found in the Upper Cretaceous and Tertiary formations across the south of the province where the glacial drift is thin or nonexistent. Many deposits of glacial lake clays suitable for such wares are found scattered over the rest of the province south of the pre-Cambrian area. The Whitemud formation of the Upper Cretaceous is a narrow sedimentary, band of secondary clays found intermittently, at points, across the, south of the province where glacial action did not disturb or remove them.8 In the southwest corner of the province, around Eastend in the Frenchman River valley, the refractory clays of this formation are contaminated somewhat with iron compounds or other alteration products of basaltic rocks. This eliminates the use of those clays in true whitewares, as they fire to creamy buff shades at the lower temperatures and to a blue-specked grey at cone 8 to 12, (2280°F to. 2390°F), the range commonly used in firing whiteware. However, for use in the production of colored artware, caneware, stoneware or crockery, and sewerpipe, this type of clay makes an excellent body that requires little or no addition of flint, feldspar, or other fluxing materials such as are required in the higher class of ware.9 It is not a grade of clay that can be shipped great distances to the manufacturing centers, but a market for considerable tonnages has developed at nearby Medicine Hat, where cheap natural gas is available for the firing of the ware. Farther east in the south central portion of the province, the clays of the Whitemud formation are generally more refractory and white burning. The formation is divided into three zones, consisting of white clays, brown shale, and white sandy clays.

After abandoning two dry holes, on the Mrs. Daisy Bradford land, C. M. Joiner finally completed his No. 3 on Sept. 8, 1930, at a total depth of 3592 ft. This well is 735 miles somewhat north of west of the town of Henderson, in Rusk County. Between Oct. 2 and Oct. 6, this well made numerous heads which indicated that it would produce about 300 bbl. daily. By Nov. 27, two dry holes,&apos; completed near the Joiner well, taken in conjunction with the small production from this well, served to dampen any enthusiasm among those who hoped for a major pool; but by December 18 three other producers had been completed. On Dec. 28, 1930, E. W. Bateman&apos;s Lois Della Crim No. 1 drilled itself in with an estimated daily yield of between 10,000 and 15,000 bbl. from a depth of 3650 ft. This well, 10 miles north of the Joiner well, also in Rusk County, initiated the leasing campaign that led to the later orgy of drilling. On Jan. 25, 1931, Moncrief, Farrell and others completed their J. K. Lathrop 1 as another big producer, 7 miles east of Gladewater in Gregg County and 14 miles N. 20" E. from the Bateman Crim well. The Lathrop well, 3574 ft. deep, flowed 320 bbl. in 1 hr. through a ½in. choke. The first well completed in Smith County was Cook No. 1, drilled by Guy Lewis et al. in the James Jordan Survey, 4.7 miles west of the Joiner discovery well. On Mar. 30, 1931, it flowed 137 bbl. in 33 min, through a ¾-in. choke. The top of the pay sand was found at 3672 ft. Finally, in Upshur County, on May 5, the Mudge Oil Co. et al. completed the Richardson No. 1, which flowed 274 bbl. through a 4 2/64-in. choke in 2 hr. This well is 4 miles northwest of the Lathrop producer. Development It is unnecessary to give a lengthy description of the rapid development of the area discovered in these five far-separated wells, or to discuss the speculations offered as to whether there were several pools or only one.

THERE are two methods employed in the development of oil pools. The older and dominant method is one in which the primary object is the protection of the underground deposit from drainage through competing wells, and considerations of efficiency of extraction and cost of production are subordinated thereto. The newer and less prevalent method is one in which maximum efficiency and minimum cost are the first objectives and developments to these ends may proceed undisturbed by the exigencies of competitive drainage. The second method has developed mainly in pools under single ownership and the term "unit operation" has come to be applied to this procedure. A single ownership, however, is not essential to the method, for unity of operation may be achieved by agreement under split ownership, or even by a concert of enlightened purpose. There are examples of unit operation where neither the ownership nor the management is a unit, but merely where unity of procedure has been attained, as is the case of the Yates pool. .Throughout this paper unit operation is used in its broad sense without implying sole ownership or single management, although unit operation is more conveniently attained where these conditions are present.

ALLOYS of gold, silver, and aluminum with elements of the groups BII, BIII, BIV, and BV were prepared by a rapid quenching technique (splat) and were examined by X-ray diffraction. Five new intermediate phases were found and will be described briefly herein. For the gold and silver systems, the concentration ranges having an electron/atom ratio e/a of 1.4 to 1.5 ("3/2 Hume-Rothery phases") were studied primarily. Master alloys were prepared from high-purity metals (99.9+ pct or better) by melting either in evacuated fused silica capsules or by nonconsum-able-electrode arc melting in an argon atmosphere. Small pieces, 20 to 50 mg, of each alloy were blast-atomized to form a splat, by a technique similar to that described by Duwez and Willens.1 The technique used for this study is described in detail in Ref. 2; it utilizes a resistance-heated graphite crucible with a small hole at the bottom, directed toward a metal substrate or quenching plate. The prepared alloy rests over the fine hole, through which it is expelled by an explosion shock wave in the form of fine droplets (1 to 50 µ) of molten metal onto a copper or silver substrate, which is maintained at about -190°C. The resulting very high cooling rates (see Ref. 2 for quantitative measurements) can prevent the process of nuclea-tion and growth in many instances, resulting in the formation of metastable phases. The splat particles were transferred to a GE-XRD5 diffractometer and maintained at -190°C, where they were examined with CuKa radiation. The samples were then allowed to warm to room temperature or were heated to higher temperatures until the equilibrium structures formed. Of fifteen alloy systems considered, nonequi-librium structures were encountered in six; these are described below and summarized in Table I. In the system Au-Sb a metastable £ phase (A3 type, hcp, a = 2.898 + 0.002A; c = 4.731 * 0.004A; c/a = 1.633) was found in the concentration range Au + 13 to 15 at. pct Sb. This phase is isomorphous with the stable phases in the systems Au-Cd, Au-In, and Au-Sn, all at an average e/a ratio of 1.4 to 1.5. The concentration range of one-phase metastable was deduced from the small amounts of supersaturated gold solid-solution phase present in the splat product. It was found that ? could also be retained by splatting onto a substrate held at room temperature: however, decomposed into the equilibrium phases Au + AuSb2 after heating to 200°C for 1/2 hr, or on holding the powdered splatted alloy at 20°C for several months. Calorimetric measurements will be made in an attempt to decide the question whether ? is metastable at all temperatures or whether it is a stable phase at low temperatures. There is evidence that another phase, possibly also close-packed but with a different stacking sequence, can be obtained by rapid quenching of alloys with a different antimony content. Klement, Willens, and Duwez3 reported the existence of an amorphous phase on quenching Au-Si alloys (25 at. pct Si) to - 196°C. They found that on heating to room temperature another phase of unknown crystal structure was formed. This was confirmed (see Table I); however, the new crystalline phase, designated as ?, could also be formed simply by rapid quenching to room temperature, and even was found to exist already in the as-cast Au + 20 at. pct Si alloy. It was found that ? decomposed into Au + Si on the specimen surface at room temperature. This behavior, and the question whether or not there is an equilibrium-temperature region for ?, have not yet been resolved. It is probable that ? (Au + 20 to 21 at. pct Si) is cubic of the -brass type (D81-3) with a = 9.60, + 0.01A and N = 52 atoms per cell [compare 6 (CU-Sn)4]. Except for two very weak lines, the powder pattern of about thirty lines could be indexed on this basis; however, a determination of the atom positions has not yet been attempted. For Au-Ge the C phase was observed at about 21 at. pct Ge as reported by Luo et at.5 Lattice parameters a = 2.876A, c = 4.73,A, c/a = 1.64 were found. In the Au-Pb system, formation of a ? phase was not observed, but in the lead-rich region at 75 at. pct Pb, broad peaks belonging to an amorphous phase were found. The maximum diffracted intensity occurred at 28 = 32.4 deg which is about 1 deg larger than the position of the (111) line of lead (Cuka). For Ag-Pb, an amorphous phase analogous to the one found in the Au-Pb system was observed; this metastable phase exists probably at about 75 at. pct Pb. Since no lead-rich alloys were tested, all alloys consisted of silver + amorphous phase at -190°C. In A1-Ge alloys, line-rich and complex powder patterns were obtained at about 30 at. pct Ge; they bear similarities to those of aluminum and germanium, but are of lower symmetry; the existence of more than one intermediate phase is possible. Central Texas added 76 producing oil and gas wells during the year, abandoned 378 wells in the same period, and produced 10,359,905 bbl. of oil in the 12 months under consideration. The oil production represents a decline of only 3 per cent as compared to 1934, but it must be remembered that much new production was added during the year. The activity in new work centered in Frio, Bexar, Williamson and Cald-well counties, with development in the Pearsall, Von Ormy and Byersville fields taking first importance. New discoveries in 1935 were confined to Pearsall area of Frio County and an extension to the Darst Creek field in Guadalupe County. The Red Lake field, in eastern Freestone County, proved itself of importance from the standpoint of a gas reserve but no oil production has yet been obtained. In Bexar County, the Von Ormy field, in which the discovery well was drilled early in 1934, completed 22 oil producers during the year. New Fields Pearsal1.—The Amerada Petroleum Corporation, in developing its 60,000-acre block in Frio County, has definitely proved the existence of commercial oil production in four separate horizons; namely, the Navarro, the Austin Chalk, the Buda and the Georgetown. The discovery well, a two million cubic foot gas well, was tompleted in 1934. A test of the Trinity sand at 10,050 ft. found salt water but later was plugged back and finished as an oil well in the Navarro sand. Most recent of their discoveries has been in the Austin Chalk at a depth of 5666 ft., where a 24-hr. gage through 1-in. choke showed 2640 bbl. of pipe line oil. The oil has a gravity of 28.0" A.P.I. and is brownish in color. Because of lack of pipe lines in the area, the wells are produced only for short periods of time, and it is predicted that development will be slow until the district is entered by pipe line purchasing companies. CERTAIN influences of oxygen on iron have been known for many years and it has always been considered one of the worst enemies of the iron and steel founders. Nobody had a good word for it, hence little was done to make use of this oxygen. In all the fields of foundry practice, the desideratum was "melt without oxidation of the metal." In the consideration of the influence of oxygen on cast iron, we must not confuse this condition with oxidized iron caused by poor melting conditions, due to a high bed, heavy charges, low coke ratio, excessive melting rate, high blast, or poor charging. It is admitted that oxygen absorbed by iron melted under these conditions has a deleterious effect on the properties of the iron. The writer has had experience both in the melting under such poor conditions and in remedying these bad conditions and considers the product far inferior to iron melted under normal conditions. As stated by Dr. Richard Moldenke,1 such iron has a higher melting point and high combined carbon, is sluggish, and contains slags and oxides in solution in the liquid, causing slag inclusions and gas occlusions, thus producing defective castings. This oxidized condition cannot be counteracted or removed by any of the known deoxidizers; it can be remedied only by proper melting conditions. Such iron is really burned, whereas the iron considered in this paper was melted under normal conditions with moderate blast, correct bed height, light charges of iron, and low coke consumption and is not in this category at all. In 1914, the late J. E. Johnson, Jr., startled the metallurgists of the world when he published his results on the advantages of oxygen on cast iron.2 His work is so convincing and so logical, in spite of the common and well-established notions on the subject, that nobody has been able to refute a single argument.
