In predicting the sweepout pattern efficiency to be expected in a .secondary recovery operation, the reservoir engineer is often confronted with a situation in which part of the producing formation lies between the last row of wells and the reservoir boundary. To date, there has been little or no reference in the literalure to sweepout pattern efficiencies in such areas. This paper presents the results, of a laboratory study in which the area contacted around the edge of a reservoir injected in a five-spot pattern was determined. The X-ray shadowgraph technique was used in this study. It was found that surprisingly large portions of the reservoir area lying outside the well network are conracted by the injected fluid before, abndonment conditions are reached. In fact, it can he said that at least 00 per cent of the circa lying outside the last row of wells and within a distance of one well spacing of these wells will ultimately be contacted by the injected fluid in the case of most water floods. Frorn the results given in this paper, it is possible to estitilate not only the extent to which encroachment into these areas will occur but also the injection volume necessary to produce the wells to abnndonment conditions. INTRODUCTION While considerable work has hern done in recent years1.?.'.''.' evaluating the fraction of the reservoir contacted as a function of the mobility ratio for several different well patterns, there has been practically no mention of what happens to the oil in that portion of the reservoir which lies between the last row of wells and the reservoir boundary. In fact, the assumption is generally made that little or no recovery can he expected From this area. This assumption is incorrect and in many cases will lead to seriouq errors in calculating reservoir performance. The fraction of the area outside the regular well pattern contacted in a five-spot injection system has been studied using the X-ray technique5 to follow the progress of actual floods in porous models of reservoir elemental areas. In this paper, the method for carrying out such a study and the results showing the fraction of the area in question swept as a function of mobility ratio and the produced fluids are presented. THE REPRESENTATION OF A RESERVOIR BY ITS ELEMENTAL AREAS She portion of the reservoir lying between the edge of a reservoir and a line connecting the outermost wells may be roughly designated as the part of the reservoir outside the regular well pattern. The most realistic mine pillar design is based on observations and measurements in situ. Low-cost reliable instrumentation has made this approach possible. At the White Pine mine, with its thousands of pillars of all shapes and sizes under all kinds of loading conditions, practical pillar design criteria have been developed. The pressure arch theory is explained and work in two test panels o f the mine is described. The pressure arch mechanism, which relies on lateral stress for support, can be applied to puzzling roof and pillar conditions in other mines.

There are three primary plant nutrients-nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium--expressed in any fertilizer compound as percent N, percent P2O5, and percent K20, in that order. This article will be concerned with the first two. The chief source of P205 is phosphate rock. As found in the western states phosphate rock is essentially tricalcium phosphate-calcium fluoride (fluorpatite). As such, it is quite water insoluble. The principal phosphate fertilizer used is single superphosphate, produced by reacting sulfuric acid with phosphate rock in the proper proportions.

INTERNAL oxidation of alloys has been investigated by Rhinesl,2 and by Meijering and Druy-vesteyn. Rhines showed that dilute Cu-A1 alloys can be internally oxidized without forming an external scale by annealing in an oxygen partial pressure equal to the decomposition pressure of Cu2O. The oxygen is supplied at the outside surface at a rate sufficient to maintain saturation of the surface with respect to oxygen. The Institute conducts jointly with the American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers and American Institute of Electrical Engineers, certain activities as listed below, and is joint owner with them of certain properties. United Engineering Trustees, Inc. When Mr. Carnegie made his gift which made possible a home for the engineering societies, a separate corporation was organized to act as a holding company and to manage the common property. This was long known as the United Engineering Society, but the name has now been changed to one which more nearly reflects the real function of the corporation. It holds title to the Engineering Societies Building and to various funds placed in its charge and is managed by a Board of Trustees, of which three are chosen by each of the four societies, American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Institute of Electrical Engineers and American Society of Civil Engineers, which have equal and undivided interests in the property. The land and building cost two million dollars. The interest of the Founders societies, aside from especial trust funds, is now valued at $1,987,793. The A. I. M. E. trustees are William H. Bassett, H. G. Moulton and R. M. Roosevelt. The President of the Board is Harold V. Coes and the Secretary, Alfred D. Flinn.

COAL, its acquisition and consumption, has loomed large enough in the lives of many of us at one time or another, not from a technical standpoint, perhaps, but on a utility basis, to keep the house warm and the plant going. The Chairman of the Coal Division was much like many of us in that respect until after his graduation from Northwestern in 1928. Then he went to work as geologist for the Zeigler Coal Co., investigating strip coal possibilities in western Illinois, and also did research in the microscopy of coal at the Illinois Geological Survey. His interest in coal was originated and stimulated by Gilbert H. Cady, of the Illinois Geological Survey. With his advice, and with the co-operation of M. M. Leighton, Survey chief, the results of his research work on the mineral constituents of coal at the Survey were accepted as a thesis for his doctorate which he received from Harvard in 1935. Nine days before the Christmas of 1906, Clayton Garrett Ball was born at Wauconda, Ill. His father was professor of geology at Northwestern until he retired in 1946; retirement didn't lessen his active interest in his profession; he's still teaching geology at the University of Kansas City. The isothermal dendritic precipitation of y in p CuZnSn is compared with the isothermal formation of Widmanstatten a plates in p CuZn. Although both precipitates are evidently bounded by semicoherent interfaces, the dendritic shape of y evolves through smooth "sinuoidal" shape perturbations, while a-p interfaces tend to be strictly planar, or rnicroscopically faceted. An estimate of the average inter-facial free energy of cube-oriented y in p through the Mullins-Sekerka analysis indicates that it is low (of the order of 50 ergs per sq cm). Interface mication is apparently controlled by volunle dij'usion, and the observed anisotropy in growth probably results from anisotropy of inter facial free energy. Studies of the grain boundary precipitation of y in p indicate that the precipitate can grow in both $ grains, but becomes unstable with respect to the grain with which it shares a mobile semicoherent interface. Facets observed at the tips of Kurdjumov-Sacks-oriented Wid-manstatten a plates correspond to variants of an irrational hahit, near (231)0. Comparison with Hu and Smith's determination of relative interfacial free energies of a-(3 boundaries suggests that this system possesses an extremely deep o cup, which results in an ej'ective low-o zone. The possible effects of such a cup on the stability of a-p interfaces are discussed, a needles, grown during rapid continuous cooling, possess microscopically smooth interfaces, and are characterized by a high degree of' damage in the region of the boundaries. These boundaries, induced to move on tempering at 200"C, become faceted as equilibrium is approached, which seems to indicate that boundary structure and mobility in this system are dependent on the local degvee of departure from equilibrium MULLINS and sekerkal have elucidated the phase boundary stabilizing effect of surface tension. a factor not taken into account in previous treatments of morphological development. Their analysis applies to the isothermal growth of a pure spherical precipitate (planar in the limit of infinite radius) in a slightly supersaturated solution, under conditions of inter-facial local equilibrium and isotropy of interfacial free energy. More recently, several other factors which might tend to stabilize planar interfaces have received attention. These are: i) interface diffusion;4"8 and ii) slow interfacial reaction. cahn7 included a slight anisotropy in interfacial free energy, and showed that it has no stabilizing effect, but forces shape perturbations to reflect the anisotropy. shewmon4 noted that dendritic morphologies are rarely observed in solid-solid systems, and, in particular, postulated that slow interfacial reaction occurs at all boundaries between proeutectoid ferrite and austenite, except those which propagate parallel to {11 l)y planes (for Kurdjumov-Sachs [K-S] related phases). Previously, Aaronson~ had proposed interfacial reaction at the broad faces of Widmanstatten plates, and expected that the lateral motion of high-mobility incoherent ledge edges would produce planar precipitates bounded by law-mobility semi-coherent interfaces. The problem of interfacial reaction during the dif-fusional formation of precipitates has often been ignored, although it is apparent that a small component of chemical reaction must exist at any moving interface." Further, all solutions of the diffusion equations for boundary conditions corresponding to isothermal growth predict infinite growth rate at time zero, so that elements of interfacial reaction would be most easily detected at early times. However, reported deviations from diffusion control are comparatively rare," and the local-equilibrium diffusion-control model appears adequate for the description of many isothermal growth systems.'2"9 Cahn14 has treated the problem of migration of an interface which is able to reach positional energy minima, and concluded that such an interface, if subjected to a high local ther-modynamic "driving force", may migrate normal to itself without the benefit of ledges. THE production of soft coal from strip mines in the United States has shown a remarkable growth in the last sixteen years, increasing from one and one-quarter million tons in 1914 to approximately twenty-two million tons in 1929. This is a growth of approximately 1660 p& cent, as compared with a growth of approximately 20 per cent in the underground mines for the same period. But even with this marked in- crease the total tonnage produced by open-face mining represents only 4 per cent of the nation's soft coal tonnage.

The tetnperature-conposition phase diagram of the syste,n MnS-CdS has been investigated over a range fro)n 600° to 1000° C. The small degree of solid solution on the MnS rich slde cornpared to the large CdS rich single-plzase region could be esplained by the difference in strzrctures of the cotnponents and the relative sizes of the metal ions. The change in lattice parameter as a function of cot)zposition is linear atzd jollous Vegavd's rule within experittzental limits of error. Mns and CdS have gained considerable attention in recent years because of their interesting solid state properties. In order to investigate such properties and thermodynamic quantities of mixed compositions of transition metal chalcogenides, it is necessary to establish their phase diagrams. Two earlier publications are concerned with the MnS-CdS system. Schnaase' found complete miscibility when MnS and CdS were co-precipitated in aqueous solutions at room temperature. However, there is evidence that the mixed crystals were not stable over the entire range of composition. roger's' investigation of the ternary system ZnS-CdS-MnS at 900" C indicates a solution of 48 mole pct MnS in CdS. During the course of this work which covers a temperature range from 600" to 100O° C, emphasis has been placed on the use of high-purity materials and well-defined modifications of starting products. EXPERIMENTAL Starting Materials. The stable green modification of MnS with NaCl structure was prepared by direct fusion of the elements and by chemical transport reaction. Stoichiometric amounts of manganese of 99.99+ pct purity and of sulfur of 99.999 pct purity from Gallard-Schlesinger Corp. were sealed in an evacuated quartz tube at a pressure of 10"5 mm Hg and annealed for 48 to 60 hr at 800°C. The quartz tubes used throughout this work were outgassed under high vacuum at a temperature of 90OU to 1000° C for 12 to 18 hr. For the synthesis of MnS by chemical transport3 stoichiometric ratios of elemental manganese and sulfur and small amounts of iodine were sealed under vacuum in a quartz tube, which was placed in the temperature gradient, 900/800-C, of a two zone furnace. Single crystals of MnS in form of platelets and octahedra were deposited at the cooler end of the tube. The manganese content was determined by EDTA titratin. A typical result of several analyses was 63.05 pct Mn which agreed well with the computed value, 63.14 pct. Commercially available CdS of 99.9+ pct purity, a mixture of the cubic and hexagonal forms, was converted into the hexagonal high-temperature modification by annealing CdS under vacuum in quartz tubes at 700° C for about 36 hr. As a second method, cadmium sulfide was transported in a temperature gradient, 70O° /650" C, with in vacuo sublimed iodine from the hot to the cooler zone of the tube. Large sized crystals in form of hexagonal columns and some platelets were obtained. An average result of the cadmium analysis by EDTA titration4 was 77.93 pct in good agreement with the computed value, 77.81 pct. Only the NaCl modification of MnS and the wurtzite modification of CdS were used for the solid solutions. Preparation of Solid Solutions. Finely powdered MnS and CdS samples were thoroughly mixed in molar ratios and compressed into pellets of about 6 mm diam and 2 mm in height at a pressure of approximately 13,500 atm.
