In the study of the sintering of meta powders, we have come to the conclusion in this laboratory that further progress requires a more basic understanding of the operating mechanisms. This is emphasized in detail by Shaler. He has shown that a knowledge of the exact value of the surface tension is imperative for a solution of the kinetics of sintering. This force plays a principal role in causing the density of compacts to increase.2 Furthermore, a knowledge of the surface tension of solids is also applicable to other aspects of physical metallurgy. C. S. Smith3 points out the relation between surface and interfacial tension and their function in determining the microstructure and resulting properties of polycrystal-line and polyphase alloys. This paper describes one group of results of an experimental program designed for the study of the surface tension in solid metals. As a by-product of this work, considerable information has been obtained on the rate and nature of the flow of a metal at temperatures approaching the melting point and under extremely low stresses, a field of mechanical behavior heretofore scarcely touched by metallurgists. The importance of this additional information to students of powder metallurgy need not be stressed. Theoretical Considerations Interfacial tension arises from the condition that an excess of energy exists at the interface between two phases. Gibbs proves that this energy is a partial function of the interfacial area; thus: ?F/?s = ? where ?F/?s is the rate of change of free energy of the system with changing surface area, at constant temperature, pressure and composition, and ? is the interfacial tension, or interfacial free energy per unit area. If one of the phases is the pure liquid or solid, and the other the vapor of the substance, ? may properly be termed "surface tension," and is a characteristic of the solid or liquid. The attempt of a body to lower its free energy by decreasing its surface gives rise to a force in the surface which is numerically equal in terms of unit length to the free energy per unit area of the surface. Thus ? may be expressed either in erg-cm-² or in dyne-cm-1. Similarly, surface tension may be determined either by a thermo-dynamic measurement of the surface energy or by a mechanical measurement of the surface force. We have chosen the latter approach. Tammann and Boehme4 determined the surface tension of gold by measuring the amount of shrinkage or extension of thin weighted foil at various temperatures and interpolating to zero strain. The method is of questionable accuracy because of the tendency of foil to form minute tears when heated under tension. Their assumption of F = 2W?, where W is the width of the foil, is unsound, as the foil can decrease its surface area by transverse as well as by longitudinal shrinkage. Although their experimentation was meticulous, the paper does not include details of the sample configuration required for recalculating ? on a correct basis, even if such a calculation were possible. In the experimental procedure chosen here, a series of small weights of increasing magnitude are suspended from a series of line copper wires of uniform cross-section. This array is brought to a temperature at which creep is appreciable under extremely small stress. If the weight overbalances the contracting force of surface tension, the wire stretches; otherwise, it shrinks. The magnitude of the strain is determined by the amount of unbalance, so a plot of strain vs. load should cross the zero strain axis at w = F?. If balance is visualized as a thermodynamic equilibrium, the critical load is readily calculated. Eq 7 can be confirmed by means of a stress analysis. IN 1937 the employees of the Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines Ltd., at Timmins, Ont., Canada, approached organized medicine for a plan to provide themselves and their families with a complete medical service including hospitalization. This approach was made because of two conditions: (1) the necessity for some organization whereby contributions could be made in instalments to offset the sudden and large expense connected with illness for which the average employee is not prepared, and (2) the need for a more cohesive quality of service to replace a contract practice then in vogue, which did not take care of the employee's family or dependents. In different parts of the United States and Canada similar plans were in force, not only for employed groups but for numbers of people in circumscribed areas. In Europe different countries had adopted various forms of health insurance plans. It then was no surprise that these employees as a group should ask for some similar plan. With the cooperation of the management, a plan was instituted. The plan has one object only-the provision of medical services, including the accessory services such as hospitalization, X-rays, nursing, and necessary drugs and medicines. It is not concerned with cash benefits, sickness and accident payments, or any form of monetary return as the result of illness, but is simply an organization to provide medical services and pay for them from a central fund. It is a nonprofit organization and the only shareholders are the employees and their families who contribute and who in turn receive services. The Hollinger plan is limited to the employees of the Hollinger mine, who live in Timmins and the immediate vicinity. At first, the membership was voluntary. In the third year, it was made a condition of employment, with the proviso that at the end of any Association financial year an employee may withdraw if he wishes to do so. After withdrawal, he cannot again become a member until the end of the next Association year, and then only by the payment of the back dues. This step was taken to ensure continuity, and to prevent employees from withdrawing when well and reentering when faced with impending illness or operations. The employee himself is subject to medical examination on application for employment, and if accepted is subject to further examination by a specialist in chest diseases under the Workmen's Compensation Board of Ontario. Thus it is possible to exclude those who have heart disease, tuberculosis, or other disabling conditions when first employed. Wives and families of employees are not subject to medical examination but other dependents of an employee-mother, father, or other relative-who are declared by the employee to be wholly dependent upon him must be examined. WARTIME factors have strengthened the production engineering consciousness of the petroleum industry. The basic principles of sound oil-production technology have been accepted as the standard by the industry and the governmental co-ordinating agencies. Every effort is being made to furnish larger quantities of petroleum with a minimum expenditure of materials and under strict conservation practices. The sphere of influence of production engineering extends from fundamental reservoir control of withdrawal rates and reservoir pressures to bolstering production from stripper wells. Serious transportation difficulties in moving oil to the East Coast have stimulated secondary recovery operations in the Appalachian and East Central oil-producing states. Diminishing discovery of new oil reserves by exploration activities increases the importance of promoting efficient oil-producing methods and practices throughout all productive areas in the United Nations.

Rare-earth additions were made to laboratory heats of Type 310 stainless to observe their effect on as-cast ingot structure, nitrogen and sulfur contents, and nonmetallic inclusions. Lanthanum had a grain-refining effect in 30-lb ingots, but results with 200-lb ingots were inconsistent. Cerium, lanthanum, and misch metal lowered the sulfur content when the sulfur exceeded 0.015 pct and the rare-earth addition was greater than 0.1 pct. The rare-eardh content in the metal dropped very rapidly within the first few minutes after the addition. The size, shape, and distribution of nonmetallic inclusions was not changed in 30-lb ingots, but changes were noticed in larger ingots. RARE-earth* additions have been made to austenitic Cr-Ni and Cr-Mn steels to improve their hot workability. The high alloy content of these steels often results in a considerable resistance to deformation and inherent hot shortness at rolling temperatures, particularly in larger ingots. Rare earths in the metallic, oxide, or halide form are usually added to the steel in the ladle after deoxidation although they can be added in the furnace prior to tap or in the molds during teeming. The literature- indicates that the effects of rare-earth treatments on these stainless steels are not consistent, and sometimes even contradictory. Since no mechanism has been presented which satisfactorily accounts for the claimed improvements, the effects of rare earths are a qualitative matter. The work described in this paper was initiated to expand the knowledge of the effects of rare-earth additions on melting variables such as ingot structure, chemical analysis, and nonmetallic inclusions. REVIEW OF LITERATURE Ingot Structure—Rare-earth additions to stainless steels have been reported to cause a change in primary ingot structure in that there are fewer coarse columnar grains. However, the results are inconsistent. While one investigation1 has shown a large reduction in coarse columnar crystals, another2 has been unable to observe this effect, particularly when small ingots were poured. Post and coworkers3 observed ingot structures for a number of years and found that the columnar type of structure is not definitely a cause of any particular trouble in rolling or hammering, provided the alloy is ductile. Knapp and Bolkcom4 found rare-earth additions to be quite effective in preventing grain coarsening in Type 310 stainless steel. Chemical Analysis—Many effects of rare-earth treatment on chemical analysis have been claimed in the literature. Russell5 observed that some sulfur is removed by rare-earth metals, and that a high initial sulfur content improved the efficiency of sulfur removal. Lillieqvist and Mickelson6 report that rare-earth treatment causes sulfur removal in basic open-hearth furnaces, but not in basic lined induction furnaces. Knapp and Bolkcom found no sulfur removal in acid open-hearth and acid electric furnaces, probably because the acid slag can not retain sul-fides. snellmann7 showed that sulfur could be lowered apprecfably with rare-earth additions; however, a sulfur reversion occurred with time. Langenberg and chipman8 studied the reaction CeS(s) = Ce(in Fe) + S(in Fe), and found the solubilit product [%Ce] [%S] equal to (1.5 + 0.5) X 10-3'at 1600°C. Results in 17 Cr-9 Ni stainless were about the same as those in iron. Beaver2 treated chromium-nickel steels with 0.3 pct misch metal and observed some reduction in the oxygen content. He also noted an inconsistent but beneficial effect of rare earths when tramp elements were present in amounts sufficient to cause difficulty in hot working. It is not known whether rare earths reduce the content of the tramp elements or change the form in which these elements appear in the final structure. No quantitative data are available concerning a possible effect of rare-earth treatment on hydrogen and nitrogen contents. However, Schwartzbart and sheehan9 stated that additions of rare earths had no effect on impact properties when the nitrogen content was low (0.006 pct), but served to counteract the adverse effects of high nitrogen content (0.030 pct) on these properties. Knapp and Bolkcom4 analyzed open-hearth heats in the treated and untreated conditions and found the nitrogen content (0.006 pct) to be unaffected. These two results lead to the speculation that rare-earth additions can reduce the nitrogen content to a certain level. THE oil-producing industry may logically be 'divided into four independent branches: (1) Acquisition of possible productive lands by lease, fee purchase, concession, or otherwise and the perfection of titles thereto. (2) Studies of the geology of the properties, leading to the location of exploratory wells. These involve reconnaissance and detailed surveys and the use of geophysical instruments, where conditions do not permit surface determination. (3) Drilling of exploratory or test holes and, later, exploitation wells. (4) Actual recovery of the oil from the wells by flowing, pumping, or other methods. These four divisions of the industry are unrelated in detail of accomplishment, but they are entirely complementary, one to the other, and must, in any efficient' organization, harmonize in their respective efforts toward the desired ultimate end. The relative order for the first two branches is not necessarily the proper one; in fact one should have knowledge of the favorable possibilities of a given property before it is acquired, and preferably, also, final opinions as to then proper location for an exploratory well, if such is justified in the light of

(Wilkes-Barre Meeting, June, 1911.) OF the several extensive deposits of brown iron-ore in Cuba, including those of Mayari and Moa, that of Mayari was the first to be systematically explored, and was selected as the scene of the first operations in the development of this class of ore. Construction-work, begun in the spring of 1907, involved the building of 16 miles of standard-gauge railroad and two large double-track inclines, the installation of mining-machinery, a nodulizing-plant, power-plant, shops and shipping-facilities, and the dredging of an extensive basin for deep-draught vessels. Unusual weather-conditions delayed the completion of portions of this work so that the entire plant was not in operation until December, 1909. The ore in its natural state contains a very large percentage of water, which increases to some extent with the depth below the surface. Near the surface it is red in color, with somewhat granular structure. The color gradually changes with depth, finally reaching a bright yellow. The consistency also changes towards, the bottom to a clay-like, sticky mass. The relative proportion of red and yellow ore is quite variable; in some places the yellow reaches close to the surface, while in others the red extends almost to the underlying serpentine. Fig. 1 is a map showing the Mayari division of the Spanish-American Iron Co. The ore lies on an irregular plateau about 15 miles long and 5 miles wide at the widest point, entirely covered with pine trees and brush, which grow directly on the ore. The elevation at the northern extremity, which is approached by the railroad, is about 1,700 ft. above sea-level. At the southern end the general elevation is about 2,000 ft. Ore is removed by means of scraper-bucket excavators and steam-shovels, these machines loading into special standard-guage, side-dump steel cars of 100,000 lb. capacity. A short haul

ANALYSIS of the chemical and structural differences in minerals often results in a better understanding of the differences in the geological conditions under which they were formed. The minerals in the kaolinite group differ in the amount of interlayer water and in the nature and amount of ordered and/or random shifting of each 1:1 layer with respect to those above and below it. This paper is a progress report resulting from research on the morphology, structure, and origin of fine-grained minerals, supported by Contract N6onr26914 with the Geophysics Branch of the Office of Naval Research. The purpose of the paper is to present data obtained in the laboratories at The Pennsylvania State College and elsewhere, which reveal some of the details of structure of the minerals in the kaolinite group, and to suggest a number of interpretations that bear upon the conditions of origin of these minerals. Be¬cause most of the work in this investigation thus far has been concerned with the relationships of kaolinite, halloysite (4H2O; endellite), and halloysite (2H2O), must of the discussion deals with these members of the group. The first step in the analysis of the differences in two sets of geological conditions is an evaluation of the differences in the minerals that result. Thus the chemical differences between the montmorillonite and the kaolinite clays corroborate other evidence in support of the view that the montmorillonites are commonly formed when solutions are alkaline and leaching poor, while kaolinite usually is associated with acid solutions and good drainage condi¬tions. It is obvious that the greater the differences in the minerals, the more divergent may be the conditions that give rise to them and the more readily one condition can be distinguished from the other. In the kaolinite group, differences between individual members are small, therefore the differences in condition of origin are presumably subtle and difficult to define. At the same time, the very fact that the minerals differ only slightly makes them more sensitive indicators of the exact conditions under which they and the minerals associated with them were formed. Since clay minerals are being used more and more to evaluate the nature, value, and mode of formation of economic mineral deposits, an attempt to define these subtle differences would appear worth while. THIS paper outlines a time-saving graphical method of calculation for application to the interpretation of observations with the Eötvös torsion balance. Preliminary to the treatment of this short cut method which has been found practicable, the principal formu-las by which the student of interpretation can calculate the gradient and differential curvature produced by different types of bodies in different types of situa-tions are presented and discussed. It is necessary to split most geologic bodies into a series of simpler ones for which not too complicated formulas are avail-able. The gradient and differential curvature effects are calculated for each of the simple bodies and then summed to the total effect for the whole body. The calculations are considerable in number and, though more tedious than difficult, should be' entrusted to an experienced calculator. Considerable facility in qualitative interpretation can be acquired by the geophysicist from experience and from a thorough study of the types of gradient and differential curvature anomalies produced by the dif-ferent types of possible structural situations. How-ever, semi-quantitative calculations' of the probable structure bring out many relations that are not evident in a simple inspection of torsion balance results ; it throws out as impossible or improbable certain of the alternative structural possibilities that may seem equally probable under simple inspection of the results; it will determine more accurately the position of the crest of the structure; and reduce considerably the un-certainty in the interpretation and it is necessary to intelligent interpretations. The calculation of such cross-sections consists of a trial-and-error calculation of a body that will give gradient and differential curvature effects as closely as possible the same as those observed. From his knowledge of the gradient and differential curvature produced by different types of bodies, the geophysicist sketches a tentative cross-section of the structure as indicated-to him-by the observed results of the torsion balance survey, and the calculator then splits the struc-ture into blocks, and calculates the gradient and differ-ential curvature block by block. If, as rather usual, the calculated .gradient and differential curvature pro-files diverge considerably from, the respective observed ones, it is necessary to add and subtract blocks from the cross-section until a close agreement is obtained .between the calculated and observed profiles. The com-plete calculations have to be gone through for each block that is added or subtracted.

INTERMETALLIC compounds are formed in many binary metal systems. Some compounds are stable to their melting points, and others decompose at lower transition temperatures. Even those of the first class are dis-sociated in the liquid state, as indicated by the continuous for in of their solubility curves at their melting points1. While the lattice structures of some of these compounds have been determined, their thermodynamic properties have not been investigated. In this paper is described the determination of the free energy and heat of formation of the compound CdSb, which is of the first class mentioned above, melting congruently at 455° C. This compound shows a rhombic structure, and the lengths of the edges of the elementary cell containing four molecules are: a =6.52, b = 8.60, c = 4.16 A.2 There are three possible methods of determining the free energy of formation of a compound of this type. The first method, applying the third law of thermodynamics, requires the measurement of its heat capacity preferably to liquid hydrogen temperatures, and a calorimetric determination of its heat of formation. The second method involves the study of the equilibrium of the compound in some gas reaction, such as: CdSb + CO2 = CdO + CO + Sb From the known free energies of formation of CdO, CO2 and CO the free energy of formation of CdSb could be calculated. The diffusion coefficients of zinc in single-crystal zinc and carbon in single-crystal and poly crystalline nickel were measured by means of radioactive tracer techniques both with and without the application of ultrasonic vibrations under conditions such that the temperature of the sample was closely controlled. The results of this investigation indicate no enhancement of diffusion in any of the samples. It is suggested that previously reported enhancement may have been due either solely to temperature increases caused by ultrasonic vibrations or in combination with changes in the boundary conditions. A number of observations have been reported in the literature in which it has been implied or inferred that the application of ultrasonics enhances diffusion (see, for example, Refs. 1-5). The present study was undertaken in an attempt to observe this effect under carefully controlled conditions, particularly with regard to measurement and control of the temperature of the sample. Two different types of systems were studied; these were the self-diffusion of zinc and the diffusion of carbon in nickel. EXPERIMENTAL For diffusion with ultrasonic energy applied, the samples were included as part of a resonant ultrasonic system operating at 58.5 kcps. The ultrasonic generators used were rated at 100 and 250 w and could be tuned over a frequency from 10 to 100 kc. A PZT (lead titanate/lead zirconate) ceramic transducer provided the driving vibration. This system requires no metallurgical joining of the specimen to the acoustical transmission line since the ultrasonic driver and the follow-up section clamp the specimen in position by means of a constant pressure of 50 lb developed by an air cylinder. The ultrasonic driver and follow-up section, both made of titanium, were 4 in. in length from clamping point to the end in contact with the specimen. Using the relationship given by Mason,6 A = V/f, the resonant wavelength, A, in titanium is calculated to be 3.3 in. at a frequency, f, of 58.5 kc, taking the velocity of sound in titanium, V, as 1.95 X 105 in. per sec. The 4-in. driver and follow-up section, therefore, are each 4.0/3.3 =1.21 times the resonant wavelength. Clamping pressure must be applied at stress nodes of the transmission line in order to preserve resonance. Therefore, a specimen length of 0.58 times the wavelength in the specimen was required to place the clamping pressure application points at stress nodes exactly three wavelengths apart. A stress antinode was contained in the center 3 in. of the specimen. A small PZT ceramic disc attached to the follow-up section provided an output voltage proportional to the intensity of the standing wave. This output voltage was monitored on an oscilloscope and the ultrasonic system was tuned to resonance by varying the frequency until the output signal was a maximum amplitude. The amplitude of the output signal was maintained constant throughout the diffusion anneal. A split cylindrical stainless-steel chamber, which was purged with argon prior to and during the runs, was placed around the specimen. The chamber in turn was surrounded by a movable furnace whose temperature could be controlled to 7C. Heat exchangers were used to cool the driver, follow-up section, and ultrasonic transducer. Great care was taken to obtain the true specimen temperature in all cases. Several different methods were tried; the most successful was that in which the thermocouple was held in contact with the midlength of the specimen by means of an asbestos insulating pad and wire straps. In the case of zinc, single-crystal specimens of 99.999 pct purity were used. The samples were 0.25 by 0.25 in. square and of the proper length for resonance, that is 1.1 in. long with the c axis parallel to the long dimension of the specimen for the case of diffusion perpendicular to the c axis and ultrasonic motion parallel to the c axis, and 1.9 in. long with the c axis perpendicular to the long dimension of the specimen for the case of diffusion parallel to the c axis and ultrasonic motion perpendicular to the c axis. In each case, one of the rectangular faces was electroplated with a thin film of zinc containing Zn The constant pressure used to clamp the specimen in place in the ultrasonic system caused some deformation in some of the samples. For these samples the deformation was concentrated in either end of the specimen; thus, for all samples (both zinc and nickel) the center in. was cut from the specimen after the diffusion anneal to be used for sectioning and counting. The nickel single-crystal samples, of 99.999 pct purity, were used in the form of rods 0.25 by 0.187 by 2.07 in. long with the (100) direction parallel to the rod axis. The polycrystalline nickel samples of 99.97 pct purity had an average grain diameter of 0.007 in. and were used in the form of rods 0.25 by 0.125 by 1.87 in. long. The direction of ultrasonic motion was parallel to (100) direction (bar axis) for the single-cqstal samples and parallel to the bar axis for the polycrystalline specimens. A thin film of c14 suspended in methanol was applied to the diffusing face of the specimen. Two specimens were butted together lengthwise for each diffusion anneal to minimize oxidation. After diffusion, a precision lapping device similar to the one described by Goldstein7 and a radiation detector were used to obtain a plot of specific activity vs penetration distance for each specimen. IN the nonferrous sessions this year, magnesium wiggled its way into a dace of prominence such as it has never before enjoyed. This was evidenced not only by the number of papers presented on that metal but by the attendance at the meetings. The atmosphere permeating these magnesium meetings was similar to that which exists in a family with a new baby. BEFORE discussing this subject it is necessary to define somewhat the meaning of the tern metallurgical.. When I was a student at M. I. T. ore-dressing was not thought of as metallurgy in any sense of the word, but it was considered as more closely allied to mining, enabling the miner to market an otherwise unmarketable product, or at least to market it to better advantage. Progress in ore-dressing has gradually allied it more closely with smelting, for at present the raw material received by the smelter is predominantly concentrates and smelting practice has been profoundly affected by the products of the concentrating mill. It is not surprising therefore that in many schools ore-dressing is frankly considered as metallurgy and although there may be some dissenting opinions it will be considered as such in this discussion. Twenty-five years ago at M. I. T. metallography was taught in a few optional lectures. This subject has developed rapidly and been expanded into the new and increasingly important field of physical metallurgy. To many metallurgists the -term metallurgy means only physical metallurgy. The, state of stress around a vertical wellbore in rock following nonlinear stress-strain laws is examined by means of finite element analysis. The wellbore, is considered an axisymmetrier body with axisymmetric loading. The initial vertcal and borizontal stresses are "locked" in the rock elements around the wellbore and a new state of stress is generated by the displacements which occur around the borehole. A point-uise variation of the elastic moduli is made on the basis of the new stress state and the triaxial data. The initial stresses tire now reintroduced along with tile changed moduli and original boundary constraints. This procedure is repeatrd until convergent stresses are reached. The effect of nonlinearity on streases is examined for a 6,000-ft wellbore in a scbistose gnezss and Berea sandstone using results of laborratory triaxial compression tests. The results sbou that the effect is restrited to one well radius from the bottom periphery of the bole. Beyond a distance of one-quarter radius, the elfect of nonlinearity on stresscs IS almost always less than percent for the cases conszdered, The consideration of a static pressure inside the well does not magnify the effect of monlinearity on borehole stresscs. INTRODUCTION The terms " wellbore" and "borehole" here designate cylindrical openings in the ground with vertical axis and a circular cross-section. A knowledge of the stress redistribution that occurs on excavating a wellbore is important in understanding (1) the behavior of the lined or unlined hole, (2) hydraulic fracture response, and (3) the effect of stress redistribution on drillability; also it is important in predicting initial stresses in the virgin ground, and in analyzing the response of measuring instruments placed in the borehole. Our knowledge of the state of stress around a wellbore has been restricted to homogeneous, isotropic, elastic material and derives chiefly from the analysis by Miles and Toppingl and the photoelastic work of Galle and Wilhoit2 and Word and Wilhoit.3 In this investigation the state of stress is examined for a nonlinear elastic material by means of finite element analysis. Many rocks possess stress-strain curves that depart notably from straight lines in their initial or final portions. While the literature contains abundant stress-strain data from triaxial tests (axisymmetric loading) on cylindrical rock specimens, there is little information on rock deformability under nonaxisymmetric loading conditions such as occur at each point around the bottom of a wellbore. Although there is some knowledge of the effect of intermediate principal stress on rock strength, there is virtually nothing known about its effect on rock deformability; therefore, we have assumed here that the effect of intermediate principal stress can be ignored. A schistose gneiss4 and Berea sandstone5 were selected as representative rocks for this analysis. The traditional graphs of deviator stress (ol -o3) vs axial strain were reworked to give the tangent modulus as a function of the deviator stress for varying values of the minor principal stress. The result is a nesting family of skewed, bell-shaped curves for tile gneiss (Fig. 1A) and the sandstone (Fig. 2A). A similar replotting of the lateral strain data defines the variation of Poisson's ratio (v) with the deviator stress and confining pressure. These curves, shown in Fig. 1B for the gneiss and in Fig. 2B for the sandstone, are not so well ordered as the tangent modulus curves. However, all of these display an increase of v with deviator stress application, but the rate of increase diminishes with confinement. The ET and v curves for the two rock types are tabulated in Tables 1A and 1A for use in a digital computer so that material properties corresponding to a given state of stress can be assigned by interpolation. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM Given a state of stress in the ground prior to drilling a hole (initial stresses), we assume that

COPPER operations in the Congo mean the operations of the Union Miniere du Haut Katanga, because there are no other copper industries there. There is a mine at Bwana M'Kubwa, a little way to the South, in Rhodesia, which has been operated on a small scale, and-another farther south, the Falcon mine, but in quite a different section of the country. This Bwana M'Kubwa mine has recently been reorganized financially and the Minerals Separation interests have taken an extensive share in it, so that it may come into operation. The Union Miniere's operations are in Katanga, the most southeastern province of the Belgian Congo, and the company's concession is in the southeastern part of that province. The usual route for going into the country is by way of Cape Town, thence over the South African Railways through Kimberly and Mafe- king to Bulawayo, then by the Beira, Mashonland and Rhodesia Railways to the Rhodesia-Congo border, passing Victoria Falls on the way, and finally by the Belgian road, the Chemin de Fer du Katanga, to Elisa- bethville, the African headquarters of the company. From Cape Town to the border it is about 2150 mi. and from the border to Elisabethville about 158 mi., making a little over 2300 mi. from Cape Town, by rail.
