THIS paper deals with the- methods of mining the high-grade clays of California. Although the majority of the clay pits in the state are operated on a scale that is small by comparison with most metal mines, this very fact results in a diversity of methods and gives rise to problems of selection of the method best suited to given conditions. Two or three operators in California produce approximately 500 tons per day of a single kind of clay from a single pit. About five varieties of clay are mined on a scale of 200 to 400 tons per day; not over fifteen varieties are mined on a? scale of 50 to 200 tons per day; and more than 50 varieties are mined at a rate of less than 50 tons per day. It is the aim of this paper to delimit, insofar as the data at hand permit, the conditions and scale of operations that favor the selection of each dominant method of mining that is actually being applied at California properties. Details of the occurrence and utilization of the clays of California have been given in a recent bulletin and are not considered here.

The concepts of "redox potential" and "oxide-ion activity" are suggested as measures of the fundamental slag properties of interest to the extraction metallurgist. Thermodynamic data for single oxides are presented graphically in these terms and a method of expressing desulfurization of steel in electrochemical terms is indicated. The application of the theovy to mixtures of oxides (slags) is discussed and the redox potential is shown to provide a link between all the redox equilibria in a slag-metal system. In particular, the redox potential of the slag, its basicity, and the oxygen partial It is now generally recognized that slags are mixtures of polymeric anions of silicates, aluminates, phosphates, and so forth, neutralized by cations. However, conventional thermodynamic treatments of slags have almost always been in terms of activities of the pure component oxides (e.g., SiO,, CaO, A1203, and so forth), which are known not to exist as such in slags. While this type of empirical treatment is perfectly acceptable and provides a rigorous and self-consistent way of considering thermodynamic properties, it can give little guide to the structure of slags, since its very nature ig- pressure are closely connected. Direct deternzination of these by electrode-potential measurements is possible. Literature calculations of ion activities in the system Ca0 -Fe0-SiO,/molten iron are used to evaluate redox potentials, which are shown to correlate with data on sulfur partition in the system. In addition to its application to equilibrium conditions, an electrochenzical approach to slag-metal reactions might provide a basis for new methods of studying the kinetics of these reactions and for plant-control instruments in the pyrometallurgical industries. nores such complications. Recently, the thermodynamic properties of some slags have been successfully interpreted in terms of activities of anions of varying degrees of complexity. (While these have been successful curve-fitting exercises, there is no direct implication that the anions used in the models are necessarily the ones which actually exist in slags.) The success of these ionic thermodynamic treatments is encouraging but a complete picture of slag structure is still a long way off. What is needed is a complete knowledge of the values of stability constants for all reactions in slags of the type:

Kentucky for the first time in its oil history passed the 10 million barrel mark. Of the total 10,019,641 bbl., 8,262,516 bbl. were produced in Western Kentucky, and Union County surpassed all others, with 4,056,142 bbl., or 40 percent of all the production for the state. There were 930 wells known to have been drilled during the year; 510 in Western Kentucky and 221 in the gas-producing area of Eastern Kentucky.

MINING occupies a position of less importance than manufacturing or agriculture in Canada, but its relative contribution has increased greatly during the post- war period. Mineral production was only 5.14 per cent of the net value I of production of all kinds of commodities in 1919, but by 1936 the pro- portion had risen steadily to 12.76 per cent. Mining felt the depression, hut unlike agriculture, which is still ' sorely stricken, it has passed from early convalescence to complete recovery. For each of the last two years new high records were established for the industry as a whole and for the quantity of most metals produced. Mining has had a notable effect on - the growth of the power industry in Canada. Water power has been developed in the same or adjacent areas wherever mining camps have been 1 established, with few exceptions. Consumption of electrical energy by the mining industry gained 72 per cent within a decade, rising from 1604 million kw.-hr. in 1926 to 2754 in 1935. Compression tests were run in the temperature range of 700° to 900°C ox 0' phase NiAl intermetal-lic alloys of several grain sizes. At these temperatures the minimum strengths were observed at the stoichiometric composition. While significant increases in strength occurved in both the low-nickel (vacancy) and high-nickel (substitutional) regions, the highest strengths were found in the high-nickel region. During deformation serrated flow was sometimes observed in the low-nickel alloys. After deformation transgranular cvacking and deformation striations were observed in all compositions tested. AS part of a general investigation of the properties of NiAl inter metallic compounds, a preliminary study of the role of point defects upon plasticity was made by high-temperature compression tests on ß' NiAl specimens of several grain sizes and compositions. ß' NiAl is an intermetallic compound having a CsCl structure and a rather wide range of composition from A1-45 at. pct to 60 at. pct Ni.1 According to Bradley and Taylor2 and to cooper,' it possesses a defect lattice in which departures from stoichiometry in the direction of decreased nickel content lead to the presence of vacant nickel sites (although Cooper's work indicates that a small amount of substitution also occurs) whereas departures on the high-nickel side lead to substitution of nickel on aluminum sites. NiAl forms congru-ently from the melt at approximately 1650°C,1 and thus has a higher melting point than either of its component elements. Up to this time, although this and other high-melting intermetallic compounds have been suggested for elevated-temperature usage,4 only the hardness4 and a few tensile-strength measurements5 have been reported for NiAl at high temperatures. In the present investigation the effects of composition upon the compressive-strength properties in a range of 700° to 900°C have been measured for NiAl of several grain sizes. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The alloys were made as described elsewhere6 from an A1-46.8 at. pct Ni master alloy furnished by the International Nickel Co. with additions of high-purity nickel and aluminum. The charges were vacuum-induction-melted in A12O3 crucibles with small amounts of helium added to the atmosphere to suppress vaporization. They were cooled slowly from the melting temperature to achieve uniform grain size. In order to refine the as-grown grain size a special rolling technique was developed. Alloys were packed into 0.10-in. wall-type 302 stainless-steel tubes which were partially filled with magnesium oxide to prevent bonding between the alloy and the steel jacket. The ends of the tubes were closed by hot forging, and the packets were then hot-rolled. The alloys with greater than 50 at. pct Ni were rolled at 1100°C, but it was found necessary to increase the temperature to 1350° C before alloys with less than 50 at. pct Ni would roll without cracking. With these temperatures, reductions as high as 48 pct were achieved in a single pass. The rolled alloys will hereafter be referred to as "fine grained" whereas the as-grown material will be designated "coarse-grained''. The compression specimens were made by cutting square cross-sectional pieces, approximately 3/16 by 3/16 by 1/2 in., with a water-cooled diamond cut-off wheel from the as-grown or the rolled alloys. Specimens were ground to their final dimensions by polishing through 3/0 grit silicon carbide papers. The final shape was a rectangular parallelepiped of square cross section having a height-to-width ratio of 3:1. Compression testing was carried out in a compression rig of our own design mounted on an In-stron Floor Model. The specimen chamber could be heated to 1000°C and was controlled within ±2°C. The compression rig was enclosed within a bell jar and was maintained at a 50 µ of mercury vacuum throughout the duration of the test. The test cham -ber was heated from room to test temperature within 15 min. Specimens were then held at the test temperature 30 min prior to testing. Previous experiments indicated that no grain growth would occur within this time. An Instron Variable Crosshead speed unit was used to adjust for small variations in specimen lengths in order to have a constant initial strain rate, €, for all specimens of a group. For the fine-grained specimens the strain rate was changed rapidly at constant temperature by a factor of 10 with the speed lever on the Instron. For a given € the compression data was analyzed in terms of true plastic strain (E) and true compressive stress (0).

Thermal, metallographic, and vapor pressure data were obtained to establish the pkase boundaries and the standard free energy, enthalpy, and entropy of formation for the compounds in the Y-Zn system. Three coinpounds with stoichiometric formulas of YZn, YZn2, and Y2Zn17 melt congruently at 1105", 1080°, and 890°C, respectively. Four compounds with stoiclziometric formulas of YZn3, YZn4, YZn5, and YZn,, undergo perztectic reactions at 905", 895", 870º, and 685ºC, respectively. Three eutec-tics exisl in this system with the .following eutectic temperatures and zinc contents in wtpct: 875ºC, 23.2 Zn; 1015ºC, 51 Zn; 865ºC, 82 Zn. The YZn, pkase undergoes an allotropic transformation. In the two phase YZn2 -YZn alloys the trans.formation gives a weak thermal arrest at 750°C, whereas in the two phase YZn2-YZn3 alloys no thermal arrest is observed and the transformation occurs over a temperature range below 750°C. At 500°C the free mzergies of formation per lnole vavy from —18,090 for YZn to —53,430 fov YZr11 and corresponding enthalpies vary from -24,050 to -92,080. The free energies and enthalpies per g atom as a function of composition show a maximum for the YZn2 phase; the 500°C values are -9580 and -13,180, vespectively. 1 HE only information found in the literature on Y-Zn alloys was the observation reported by Carlson, Schmidt. and speddingl that Y-20 wt pct Zn forms a low melting alloy. The alloy was produced by the bomb-reduction of YF3 and ZnF2 with calcium in an investigation of methods for producing yttrium metal. The solubility of yttrium in zinc has been determined by P. F. woerner2 and reported by Chiotti, Woerner, and Parry.3 In the temperature range 495" to 685°C the solubility may be represented by the relation In these equations N represents atom fraction of yttrium and T is the temperature in degrees Kelvin. The purpose of the present investigation was to establish the phase diagram for the Y-Zn system and to determine the standard free energy, enthalpy, and entropy of formation for the compounds formed. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The metals used in the preparation of alloys were Bunker Hill slab zinc, 99.99 pct pure, and Ames Laboratory yttrium sponge. Arc-melted yttrium buttons contained the following impurities in parts per million: C-129, N-12, 0-307, Fe-209, Ni-126, Mg-13, Ca < 10, F-105, and Ti < 50. Some of the alloys containing 70 wt pct or more of Zn were prepared from yttrium containing 5000 ppm Ti as a major impurity. Tantalum containers were found to be suitable for all alloys studied and were used throughout the investigation. The pure metals, total weight about 30 g, were sealed in 1 in. diam tantalum crucibles by welding on preformed tantalum covers. A 1/8 in. diam tantalum tube was welded in the base of each crucible for use as a thermocouple well. Welding was done with a heli-arc in a glove box which was initially evacuated and filled with argon. The sealed crucibles were enclosed in stainless steel jackets and heated in an oscillating furnace at temperatures up to 1150°C. Homogeneous liquid alloys were obtained within a half hr at these temperatures except for alloys containing less than 20 pct zinc. The latter alloys were held at 1000º to 1100°C for 2 to 3 days in order to obtain equilibrium. After the initial equilibrations the tantalum crucibles containing the alloys were removed from the steel containers and used directly for differential thermal analyses. Further annealing heat treatments for alloys in which peritectic reactions were involved were carried out in the thermal analyses furnace. After thermal analyses the tantalum crucibles were opened and the alloys sectioned and polished for metallographic examination. In the following discussion alloys referred to as "quenched" were obtained by quenching the sealed stainless steel jacket containing the tantalum crucible and alloy in water. The differential thermal analyses apparatus used was a modified version of the one described in an earlier paper., The graphite crucible was replaced by an inconel crucible, the nickel standard and sampie container were separated by a 1/8 in. Oil and gas activity reached a higher peak in Indiana during 1940 than for any like period during the past decade. Major activity, as during 1939, was in the southwestern part of the state, the Indiana portion of the Eastern Interior Coal Basin, where most of the increase was due to field drilling in previously proven areas. The amount of wildcat drilling was about the same as for 1939. No new fields of any apparent consequence were discovered during the year, with the possible exception of the College pool, in southwest Posey County. Only one well had been completed in this area at the end of the year. About 10 ft. of saturated Aux Vases sandstone was drilled in this well and the initial production was I00 bbl. of oil a day. Other discoveries during the year 1940 include: St. Thomas, in southwestern Knox County, where four McClosky wells, ranging from I00 to 300 bbl. a day initially, were com-pleted; Buff kin, in central Posey County, with 11 oil wells and 5 gas wells completed; and new developments in two old areas —Randolph County (part of the old Trenton field) and Gentryville, northwestern Spencer County, where some oil was found many years ago. The St. Thomas field proved disappoint-ing, with very spotty production from the McClosky horizon of the St. Genevieve limestone at a depth of about 1875 ft. The discovery well flowed 362 bbl. a day ini-tially. At the end of the year the field was pretty well outlined by dry holes and some inside locations were dry. The Buffkin pool also proved spotty, with production from shallow Pennsylvanian sands and from the Basal Pennsylvanian Mansfield sandstone, the latter at a depth of approximately I175 ft., with small production from the Cypress sandstone of Chester age. Oil wells in this pool are small, ranging from 25 to 75 bbl. a day. The Randolph County area, on the east side of the Trenton gas field, showed some promise for a commercial gas field, with four completed gas wells having cumulative initial flows of about 1,200,ooo cu. ft. a day. The area appar-ently was not depleted during the Trenton boom at the turn of the century, since casing pressures are about as high as the virgin pressure in the old field. Elsewhere the pressure has dropped as low as 5 pounds. The Griffin field received most of the drilling during 1940, with 163 completed oil wells. This field now covers about 3200 acres on the Indiana side of the Wabash River and is not as yet completely delimited. It produced the major part of Indiana&apos;s oil during the year—a total of 3,594,000 bbl. At the end of 1940, there were 253 producing wells in Griffin. New Harmony had five completions for a total of 24. The Rockport field, in Spencer County, continued to be actively developed and had a total of 45 gas wells and 9 oil wells at the end of the year. Oil in commercial quantities had not been found in the field previous to 1940. Total gas production for the year was 394,470,000 cubic feet. In all, 521 wells were drilled in the state during 1940, as compared to 377 for 1939. Of this number 248 were oil wells, 77 were gas wells and 196 were dry. Divided into

ANTHRACITE?S satisfactory showing in 1942 was accomplished in the face of adverse conditions, such as the loss of man power to the active services and to other industries, and the difficulty and delay in obtaining the necessary materials and equipment required in mining operations. Although the in- creased output was stimulated by the war, and thus does not impress one as contributing to continuing improvement in the industry, nevertheless the year witnessed several efforts ant1 consideration of others that have the appearance of permanent progress.

QUARTZ of a certain kind, is one of our strategic minerals, and Brazil is probably the one important available source. Crystals of quartz of suitable size and perfection for piezoelectrical application are rare; their most outstanding use is in radio work. Clear quartz, or "crystal," free from twinning, cracks, foreign particles of other disturbing lines of growth, and gaseous or liquid inclusions, is cut into plates which provide excellent control of frequency in broadcasting. The squares or rectangles are less than a millimeter in thickness and ordinarily on the order of 1 in. along each side. They are cut at definite angles with respect to the axes of the crystal, and ground with opposite surfaces parallel. Each small slab must be a section of one crystal, uniform throughout in atomic alignment. The thickness of the chip controls the frequency of a broadcast and it is most important to have the plates oriented and ground with utmost precision. Opposite surfaces are parallel to within 0.001 mm. and expansion or contraction due to the temperature is limited to one part in a million.

COMPRESSED air is one of the most useful tools that the mine operator has at his disposal. It is clean, nontoxic, easily handled, and can be distributed anywhere that a man can drag a length of rubber hose. Without it a great deal of drilling would still be a laborious hand process, and although the John Henry of legendary fame could beat a mechanical drill, John Henrys are few and far between, and in the long run the air drill is the victor. As a general rule, horizontal compressors are lubricated by mechanical lubricators, which furnish oil to the cylinder walls, whereas vertical units are splash lubricated. In most horizontal machines oil is introduced at the top center of the piston, from which point it can run down and lubricate the rest of the piston. Some large units introduce oil at more than one point on the cylinder wall, the necessity for this and the number of points of introduction depending upon the size of the cylinder.

A NEW preparation plant has been put in - operation to treat coal from the recently opened Concord mine, located about 15 miles west of Birmingham, Ala., by the Tennessee Coal, Iron & Railroad Co., a U. S. Steel subsidiary. The mine produces metallurgical grade coking coal from the American seam for use as coke in the company&apos;s blast furnaces at the Fairfield and Enseley works. The capacity of the operation is 1000 tons of run-of-mine per hr, approximately half of which is delivered to the by-product coke plant at Fairfield after beneficiation to metallurgical grade. The remaining portion of the mine run is rock and refuse removed during preparation. No boiler coal or other fuels are produced by this mine. Preparation of the coal is done both under- ground and on the surface. The underground primary crushing station removes some tramp iron, and screens and crushes the oversize, most of which is rock, to protect the main slope conveyor. DURING the past year the iron and steel industry of the world as a whole operated on a satisfactory basis. No discoveries nor new processes of outstanding importance were announced either here or abroad, although rumors of such were persistent. In general, the efforts of operating and research men in the iron and steel industry seemed to be confined to improving quality and reducing cost, not a new aim, for the same efforts have been noted in nearly all of the annual reviews of the industry for at least fifty years. Most published papers on blast furnace or steel-making practice were of minor importance, at least when judged by the criterion of radical change in process or product. If the number of reports in the technical journals, or articles in the trade press, is used as a basis for comparison, continuous-mill sheet is still the most important single product of the industry; papers were published detailing the results of the investigation of various phases of the

BENEFICIATION of iron ores from the blast-furnace point of view means more than the usual enrichment of the iron contents by the removal of a large part of the clay, carbonic acid gas, silica, or moisture of the natural ore; it includes all these, but it also embraces several other mechanical .processes made , necessary by the exacting requirements of present-day blast-furnace practice. The increasing use of iron- bearing by-products, to as much as a third or more of the total ore burden, has introduced still another series of processes for improving the blast-furnace ore burden. As we look back over the past three decades of blast- furnace practice &apos;in. this country, we see that many of the blast-furnace troubles were directly due to lack of proper preparation of the iron ore burden,, and we realize that beneficiation in one form or another would have remedied the trouble. This was particularly true in the smelting of magnetic iron ores, where run-of- mine ore included such big lumps of &apos;magnetite along with rich fines that the furnace operations were greatly retarded and control of the furnace such as is usual today, was completely unknown.

THAT neither the Reconstruction Finance Corp. nor its subsidiary, the Metals Reserve Corp., are in competition with private enterprise was stressed by Charles B. Henderson in an informal talk before the N. Y. Section, A.I.M.E., on Sept. 23. Among other things, the speaker stated that the R.F.C., since its establishment, had authorized loans of $12,000,000, of which over $8,775,000 has actually been distributed. Of this amount, over $6,600,000 has been repaid. None of this money was appropriated by Congress, the sole assistance from that body being the initial authorization of $500,000,000 capital stock.

The general energy equation, including change in kinetic energy, was solved by numerical integration and used to evaluate simplifying assumptions and application practices over a wide range of conditions. When extreme conditions were encountered, sizable errors were caused by large integration intervals, application of Simpson&apos;s rule and neglecting change in kinetic energy. A maximum error of only 1.31 percent was caused by assuming temperature and compressibility constants at their average value. It was discovered that a discontinuity can develop in the integral for the injection case. This discontinuity indicates a point of zero pressure change and is an inflection point in the pressure traverse. INTRODUCTION When a pressure in a gas well is to be calculated, one of the first decisions is to select a method of calculation. In many instances, this selection becomes a problem because the literature, at best, provides an evaluation of any method for only a limited range of conditions. Once a method has been selected, a question often arises as to the size of the calculation interval which should be used. The question regarding calculation interval arises because an analytic solution is not obtainable and approximate solutions must be used. This paper presents an evaluation of major assumptions and application practices of probably the two most widely used methods for calculating steady-state single-phase gas well pressures. The two methods are Cullender and Smith1-" (numerical integration), and average temperature and com-pressibility. The Cullender-Smith method assumes that change in kinetic energy is negligible and is normally applied in two steps with a Simpson&apos;s rule correcton. The average temperature and compressibility method, in addition to neglecting kinetic energy change, asumes that temperature and compressibility are constant at their average values. This method is normally applied for wellhead shut-in pressures of less than 2,000 psi, and in one step. Computer programs were written to compute bottom-hole pressure with and without the assumptions, using various approaches. Values of input parameters investigated are shown in Table 1. Flow rate was limited to a maximum of 5,000 and 10,000 Mcf/D for tubing sizes of 1.610 and 1.995 in. ID, respectively. Flow rate was also limited to 10,000 Mcf/D for a tubing size of 2.441 in. ID when wellhead flowing pressure was 100 psia. These limitations were imposed on flow rate so as not to exceed sonic velocity. The z factor routine available necessitated limiting bottom-hole temperature to 240F and wellhead pressure to 3,000 psia. Pressures were compared on the basis of percent deviation from the trapezoidal integration of Eq. l or 2 at 100-ft intervals. A preliminary investigation indicated that a 1,000-ft interval solution would differ from a 50-ft interval solution by less than 0.25 percent; therefore, the 100-ft interval was chosen for a base. Attempts have been made to predict the volumetric and phase behavior of naturally occurring hydrocarbon mix-turesl-6 but these methods have not been extended to the higher pressures and tem-peratures that are currently encountered in some producing formations. Furthermore, the methods of prediction at present avail-able have not been tested in a sufficient number of cases to ensure their applica-bility to all naturally occurring hydrocar-bon mixtures, even at the lower pressures and temperatures. For these reasons the behavior of a number of hydrocarbon mix-tures from a field in which the subsurface pressures are above 4500 lb. per sq. in.t and the temperatures are in the neighbor-hood of 250°F. was investigated. Method The objective of this program was to determine the volumetric behavior of ma-terial as it existed in the reservoir as a function of pressure, temperature and com-position. Strictly speaking, this cannot be accomplished in any simple fashion. How- ever, the variations in composition that are encountered within a producing reservoir may be approximated roughly by means of mixtures made up of two arbitrarily chosen constituents. Experience indicates that the liquid and gas phases from a high-pressure gas trap afford a simple source of material for this purpose. Throughout this discus-sion the samples of the gas phase and liquid phase from the production trap will be called the "trap-gas sample" and the "trap-liquid sample," respectively. The volumetric behavior of both of the trap samples was determined throughout the temperature interval between 100" and 250°F. at pressures up to 5000 lb. per sq. in. In addition, the behavior of eight different mixtures containing varying proportions of the two trap samples was studied throughout the same temperature and pressure intervals. The experimental results yielded information concerning the specific volume of the material as a function of pressure, temperature and the relative quantity of the trap samples. The relative amount of each of the paraffin hydrocarbons of lower molecular weight than n-hexane was determined for each of the trap samples. In addition, the specific weight, viscosity and average molecular weight of the hexanes-and-heavier fraction of the trap-liquid sample were determined as well as similar information for each of five fractions separated from this material by distillation. From these data the weight fractions of each of the components from methane through pentane were determined for the trap samples and eight systematically chosen mixtures. THE United Verde mine is in the north central part of Arizona, on the northeasterly slope of the Black Hills, near the town of Jerome. Ore was first discovered in the district about 1875, and the first mining claims were located by M. A. Ruffner and associates in 1877. In 1888 the late Senator William A. Clark secured control of the property and under his ownership it developed into one of the country&apos;s most important copper producers. The property was sold to the Phelps Dodge Corporation in 1935, and since then has been under this Corporation&apos;s management. Except for shutdowns caused by general world-market conditions, production has been continuous from 189o to date. GEOLOGY The mineralized zone ranges in area from approximately 12 acres to less than 5 acres. All mineralization occurs in the pre-Cambrian intrusives. The first intrusion, according to geologic records, was the quartz porphyry, which later was intruded by augite diorite. Following the diorite intrusion through a series of intrusions of lesser magnitude, a pipelike mass of massive sulphide, quartz and rock was formed. The diorite forms the hanging wall of this mass, and the porphyry the footwall. Between the footwall and the sulphide a band of chlorite schist was formed, probably owing to metamorphic conditions. Commercial ore occurs along the contact of the schist and sulphide extending into the sulphide, sometimes entirely through the schist, and fingering out into the porphyry. The ore deposit was formed by replacement similar to deposits formed in limestone areas. Faulting and deformation occurred in pre-Cambrian times and again in the Tertiary period, removing approximately 2000 ft. from the top of the main United Verde ore body, forming the United Verde Extension ore body, the only other major ore body in the district. Major development work has shown that the sulphide mass extends to the 3300-ft. level, and diamond drilling below this level has indicated that the mass might extend below the 3700-ft. level, but in a diminished quantity. While many copper minerals exist in the mine, the chief commercial mineral is chalcopyrite. A plan and vertical section of the mineralized zone showing the principal geological features is shown in Figs. I and 2. GENERAL DESCRIPTION AND PHYSICAL CONDITION OF MINE After over 50 years of active production, ore still exists on almost every level of the mine. This condition is due to many causes -mine fires, which broke out as early as 1894, caused the abandonment of certain areas; subsidence and ground movements retarded the cleaning up of others. Furthermore, in the early days there was such an abundance of ore that when mining became difficult it was a simple matter to replace the production by going to a deeper level.
