SINCE the advent of what has been aptly called "chemical flotation," about 1920, the number and complexity of the various chemicals used in practice have increased enormously. Over 300 patents have been issued dealing exclusively with flotation reagents, and many of these embrace from two or three up to a score or more of specific compounds. The exact number of compounds actually finding a practical use in flotation would be difficult to determine, though the U. S. Bureau of Mines gives an annual list by groups.

OXYGEN has frequently been considered responsible for phenomena in the metallurgy of cast iron which are not sufficiently explained by the presence of other elements. Oxygen and oxides have been regarded as critical factors, particularly for the solidification process, and specifically in the formation of graphite. However, the evidence for an influence of oxygen has mostly only been indirect or qualitative. Furthermore, quantitative data on the oxygen content of cast iron presented in the literature have often been less conclusive as being apparently determined with insufficient regard for the difficulties associated with the sampling and analysis. These problems, experimental and theoretical, have been studied in this investigation. An attempt is made to bring the views on the soluble amount of oxygen in cast iron on a level with the present understanding of the thermodynamics of these types of alloys. Although there are no experimental data on the complete multicomponent cast-iron alloys some conclusions have been drawn from investigations on simpler systems. The order of magnitude of the solubility of oxygen in cast iron is considered in the first part of the paper. The second part deals with the oxygen content actually present under practical conditions. First the possible sources of errors in sampling and analyzing methods are examined. Finally some observations on the oxygen and oxide content of malleable iron during the production process are made. THERMODYNAMICS OF OXYGEN SOLUBILITY When cast iron is saturated with oxygen the saturation phase is essentially carbon monoxide or silicon dioxide depending upon the composition of the iron, the temperature, and the rates of formation of the oxides.* The latter occurs accordiw to the O + C = CO, Kc0 - a COa J 20 + Si = SiO2, Activities are used here instead of weight pct concentrations, since activities are believed to show more sensitively the effects of the interaction of all the alloying elements. Calculations involving activities are, however, seriously hampered by lack of experimental data on the interactions between the components encountered in the multi component cast-iron system Fe-O-C-Si-Mn-P-S- and so on. IN spite of the war and the preoccupation of many physical metallurgists with work on secret or confidential problems, definite progress was made during 1944 in our understanding of the behavior of steel and of the effect of alloying elements. During the first two years of the war there was much concern over the possible unavailability of certain alloying elements; this period saw the development of the N.E. (National Emergency) steels. However, the measures taken eased the alloy situation and currently, highly practical problems under study are the graphitization of low-carbon steel and weld-cracking, while investigations of more theoretical interest have concerned hardenability, isothermal reactions, the effect of hydrogen and the interpretation of the notched-bar impact test.

INCREASING military demands on the petroleum industry have brought into bold relief the crude-oil reserves now available to meet combined military and civilian demands, emphasizing the necessity for a greater efficiency in recovery from what has been discovered than ever before, particularly in light of the absence of new discoveries. This situation-and the fact that the industry, as well as members of the Government charged with governing oil production, desire to meet all crude-oil demands made of the industry with the least loss in tangible reserves through production practices-paves the way for increasing application of sound principles of production engineering and conservation.

Since the development of the pelletizing process in the fifties for relatively high purity pellets from low grade taconites, there have been several distinctive changes in filter construction for the dewatering step preceding balling. In the original large pilot plant run by Reserve Mining Co. in Babbitt, MN, the disk type filter employing agitation (Agidisc filter) was selected as the most economical. Size was limited to 2.1 m (6 ft, 9 in.) in diameter. The second generation occurred in the sixties with a jump to 2.70 m (8 ft, 10 in.) in diameter to reduce capital costs per annual ton of pellet. In the early seventies, the third generation was the steam drying disk filter which became necessary to achieve balling moistures with specific surface areas of 2200 cm2/g to as high as 3800 cm2/g caused by finer grinding to obtain higher purities. Finally, the fourth generation has recently been developed to reduce maintenance costs and further improve hydraulics to ensure minimum moisture contents.

One of the interesting features connected with the great continental uplift, which formed the table land of Mexico, is the great depth to which oxidation and secondary enrichment of orebodies occurred. This table land lies at altitudes ranging from 4000 to 7000 ft. (1219 to 2133 m.) above sea level. Several cases could be cited of oxidized zones in copper and lead mines which reached depths of upward of 1500 ft. (457 m.) below the surface, and it is universally admitted that the oxidized zone in a mine is limited by the permanent water level. Mexico, however, like many other countries in which deserts occur, is visited at rare intervals by tremendous floods, which sometimes cause variable water levels over long periods. The following cases bear out the idea, and lead to interesting conclusions of commercial value. My paper demonstrates that carbonates of ores may occur below water level and sulfides above, and I will endeavor to explain the causes of the phenomena in certain specific instances. John Chipman (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Mass.)—After looking over the authors' shoulders for several years and after many discussions on the interesting diagrams of the types shown, it is a pleasure to see a formal paper published on this subject. There can be no doubt of the practical usefulness of the concepts shown. Inclusion formation in steel is such a highly complex matter that any system for understanding the subject is bound to be welcomed by those who must work with steels and who see in their day-to-day experience the good and evil effects of inclusions. A feature of the work with which the discusser has been concerned, and which he would now like to attempt to explain, is the relation between the schematic diagrams which the authors use and the phase diagrams for related systems. Obviously, the authors' diagrams are in no sense complete phase diagrams. However, there is a relation between this type of diagram and the true phase diagram, and the understand- ing of this relation ought to help in understanding the general picture which the authors are presenting. Consider the authors' Fig. 4, which shows the liqui-dus relations in the Fe-Mn-S-0 system. To show the complete relations between temperature and composition in these four ternary systems would require four triangular prisms, the vertical axes of which would represent temperature. The four triangles of Fig. 4 represent basal projections of certain lines from the four prismatic phase diagrams. Readers of the paper are all more or less acquainted with this type of projection and its usefulness and limitations are generally understood. In order to concentrate on the interesting parts and to minimize the less interesting features, the composition scale may be shifted to de-emphasize regions containing gaseous sulphur and oxygen. PRACTICALLY all the Section delegates as well as a sprinkling of Institute officers and mere members were on hand for the annual business meeting of the Institute on Monday afternoon of the Annual Meeting. President McAuliffe presided, with C. H. Mathewson as associate chairman. Americo Albala was first called on to discuss the work of the Pan American Institute of Mining Engineering and Geology. C. Will Wright said that the need for such an organization was evident, and a resolution was passed asking the incoming President to appoint a committee to investigate cooperation with that body, of which Mr. Albala is executive secretary.

Using an expression for the free energy of a homogeneous phase as a function of composition, a relationship is derived which interrelates the phase boundaries extending from the allotropic transformation of the solvent metal. Comparisons between observed and calculated phase boundaries in the systems Fe-Ni, Fe-Mn, Fe-W, Ti-Mo, and Ti-Cb are presented. IT is the purpose of this paper to illustrate how the general free energy equations for two phases in equilibrium may be used to derive an expression which interrelates the phase boundaries extending from the allotropic transformation of the solvent metal. The free energy per gram atom of a disordered solid solution may, for many purposes, be represented by the equation:' F = ½NZ [C-V,, + (1-C) VbB + 2C (l-C)V] + K(T) +RT[C-lnC+ (l-C)ln(l-C) ] [1] where N is Avogadro's number; Z, the coordination number; C, the concentration of the solute element in atomic percent; the subscripts refer to concentrations at phase mixture boundaries; VAA, VBB, and V,, are the bond energies between like and unlike adjacent atoms, respectively, at the interatomic spacing characteristic of the phase. The bond energies are usually assumed to be independent of small changes in the lattice parameter occasioned by solute additions and variations in temperature; V = VAB ---------------—— ; K(T) is the sum of the heat con- tent and heat entropy; R, the molar gas constant; and T, the temperature in degrees Kelvin. The free energy of a homogeneous phase is there- fore the sum of an internal energy, a specific heat, and a configurational entropy term, respectively. The compositions of two phases in equilibrium at a given temperature are governed by the minimum total free energy principle. Graphically, this is represented by the points of tangency of the tangent common to the free energy vs. concentration curves of the two phases. It may be noted that Zener2 has used assumption 1 in the calculation of the boundaries limiting the (a+j3) phase mixture in the Cu-Zn system.
