FOR the proper understanding of the inclusion of certain elements in this review it seems necessary to state the meaning of "rare metals." Certain elements occur in deposits limited in extent or concentration, so that the extraction of the element in relation to market conditions becomes uneconomical. Others may occur in extensive and rich deposits but the reduction of the metal may be difficult and costly. Both these conditions effect the same result, namely, make the metal rare and costly. As an example of the first kind may be mentioned radium and of the second, calcium.

The Ti-C phase diagram exhibits a peritectic point at 1750°C and 0.8 pct C, and a peritectoid point at 920°C and 0.48 pct C. The maximum solubility of carbon in a titanium is 0.48 pct. The 6 region containing the Tic compound (20 pct C) extends to 11 pct C at the peritectic temperature. THE interest in the Ti-C alloy system stems from the fact that carbon occurs as an impurity in titanium alloys when graphite electrodes or graphite crucibles are used in their melting. Since titanium-base alloys are still in the development stage, some virtue may be found in carbon addition to titanium. The Tic compound is currently emerging as an important powder metallurgy base constituent similar to the WC compound. Ehrlich' identified the phases and structures present in the Ti-C system. The peritectoid region of the phase diagram was investigated by Jaffee et al." A preliminary diagram based on theoretical considerations was proposed at the outset of this research." The Tic compound has been investigated extensively and has been reported on in a large number of papers. Experimental Procedure Arc-melted alloys of 24 compositions in the range 0 to 20 wt pct C were investigated using metallography, X-ray diffraction, and, for the liquidus and solidus regions, incipient and complete melting. All alloys were prepared from iodide titanium (New Jersey Zinc Co., 99.95 pct Ti minimum) and spectroscopic grade carbon (National Carbon Co.). To prevent carbon spattering during arc melting the carbon was encapsulated in titanium. For alloys containing less than 1 pct C the powder was inserted into a capsule formed by drilling a hole in the as-received rod. For higher compositions, capsules were formed from titanium sheet. Arc Melting: The charges were melted in the copper-hearth cold electrode furnace shown in Fig. 1. The steel industry's increased demand for higher grade pellets has caused the pellet producers to investigate methods of upgrading their product and the Hanna Mining Co.'s Groveland plant on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan is no exception. The low grade iron deposit is a complex mixture of magnetite and hematite with chert, quartz, jasper and various iron silicates.1 Beneficiation is by Humphrey spirals and anionic flotation of the iron minerals.2 Flotation of the spiral tailings makes up about 75% of the concentrate, while a minor amount of concentrate (less than 3%) is produced in magnetic circuits. The concentrate is pelletized at the rate of 1.6 million tpy. The initial concentrating facilities were constructed in 1958 and the concentrate was marketed as sinter feed until a pelletizing plant was added early in 1963. Grade improvement soon became a high priority research project, and several methods of concentration were investigated.

Discussion of the paper of EDGAR L. NEWHOUSE, presented at the Salt Lake meeting, August, 1914, and printed in Bulletin: No. 92, August, 1914, pp. 1801 to. 1806. G. C. RIDDELL, East Helena, Mont.-As nearly as I can recall at the present moment, there are only four or five large plants on the continent where the lead on charge is carried in the neighborhood of 40 per cent. These are at Herculaneum, Collinsville, and Federal, Ill.; Trail, B.. C.; and East Helena, Mont. Our object at the latter point is to smelt a maximum amount of Coeur d'Alêne lead sulphides in as compact and self-fluxing a charge as possible, and to this end we are now smelting a mixture that at times carries up to 42 per cent. lead. The monotony of producing the 7,000 tons of bullion shipped each month to. the Omaha and Chicago refineries is relieved somewhat by the fact that the 15,000 tons monthly of Coeur d'Alêne ores that are com-ing to us carry enough zinc to provide the one-half slag used with from 6.5 to 7.5 per cent. zinc clay after day. During the month of March, 1914, three lead furnaces in continous operation, each 136 in. long, averaged 249 tons per furnace clay, exclusive of coke and slag shells, which is smelting at the rate of 5.5 tons per square foot of tuyère area. The main difficulty in the determination of silicon in pig-irons containing very high percentages of that element, has been due to their almost complete insolubility in acids, or mixtures of acids. The object of the present paper, which presents no new principle, is to suggest a method of determination which has repeatedly given accurate results, and which obviates completely the tediousness and uncertainty of the usual slow solution in acids. This method has been tried with pig-irons containing from 7 to 14 per cent. of combined silicon, and properly called ferro-silicons. When reduced to an impalpable powder in the agate mortar, an 11 per cent. ferro-silicon was found to resist the action of all acids, or mixtures of acids, with the exception of sulphuric acid of about 1.25 specific gravity. But the action of this acid, even during long continued heating, was very slow, 72 hours being necessary to com pletely dissolve half a gramme of the metal. The complete decomposition of 1 gramme of the metal may, on the other hand, readily he effected in a few minutes by fusion with sodium carbonate in a covered platinum crucible over a blast-lamp —the idea being to dissolve the silicon, leaving the iron in condi tion to be readily attacked by acids. (written discussion*).-When lump calcium cyanamid is immersed in the melt of mixed chlorides of the alkalies and alkaline earths in the manner described in the paper, the amount of sodium cyanide formed in the melt, as shown by numerous analyses, is but a small fraction of that formed by the reaction referred to by Mr. Johnson. The case-hardening effects in my process are, however, at least as good as when the common cyanide baths are used. Moreover, when compared with the cyanide baths, the gases evolved in the new process are harmless, consisting of nitrogen, carbon monoxide (which burns to carbon dioxide on the surface of the melt), and occasionally a little carbon dioxide. These gases are not irritating or poisonous, whereas the vapors arising from cyanide baths are both irritating and poisonous. The complex chemical reactions that take place in and on the surface of the melt are being investigated by the writer, who hopes, in due time, to communicate the results of his work.

THE area discussed lies south of Canadian River in Hutchinson County, Texas, covering approximately 10 m. east and west and 4 m. north and south. Development is carried on in the manner usual in standard tool operations. No outstanding divergence from the usual methods is necessary as wells are completed in 35 to 55 days to approximately 3000 ft. Most of the time is lost in the upper part of the hole and is usually caused in driving pipe of larger sizes. After approximately 1500 ft., little trouble occurs. A comparison of 13 contractors drilling for Phillips Petroleum Co. gave the following averages: Drilling time from 32 to 63 days with a daily footage of from 49 to 87 ft. per day. The rigs furnished are National turnbuckle type with 6-in. irons and steel wheels.

MINERAL production in almost all European countries suffered a sharp setback because of the war. Plants were damaged, transportation facilities disrupted, and labor dispersed and demoralized. Since the war, due to lack of confidence and economic stability, there has been little incentive to rebuild and expand the mineral industries even though a big demand at high prices exists for mineral products. Most mining and metallurgical companies in Europe hesitate to invest their capital because of the tendency towards nationalizing industry, high taxes, and low output of labor, as well as the deficiency of mine supplies and equipment within their countries. In short, they do not have faith in the future, and for these same reasons and fears most of the mining companies in America will not risk capital investment in Europe. In Europe, including the United Kingdom, free enterprise has been losing ground and as a result the foundation of their economic welfare is being undermined. American mining interests willing to take the initiative could help in counteracting this influence if a way were found for them to co-operate with the European producer without too great a risk.

The spatial distribution of the deformation modulii around the CSM/ONWI test facility was determined using an NX version of the CSM cell. Approximately 840 modulus measurements were made in six rings (each ring containing seven holes each 6 m in length) of boreholes. These parallel rings were spaced at 2.4 m intervals along the room. Contour plots of the modulii revealed that the depth of the blast damage zone varied both with perimeter position and distance away from the opening. The maximum depth of disturbance appeared to be of the order of 60 cm. At locations removed from the opening, the variability in modulus was quite high reflecting the presence of joints, faults, shear zones and foliation. A comparison of rock mass modulii (ER) with those obtained from the laboratory testing of core (E), revealed that ER [=] 0.5 E.

Ah electronic thermogravirnetric balance was used to measure the veductioiz rule o single cirpric oxide particles suspended in a stream of hydrogen. Very jzne thermocouples embedded in lie center and at the surface of the sphere recorded the variation of terw perature during reduction. In contrast to iron oxide reduction, where in most instances the rate of interface reactiokl is controlling, the heat- and mass-transfer phenotnena play a predolrinant role in the reduction of cupric oxide. The correlation of experitnental data or tnass lransfev lhrough the boundary layer at Reynolds nunlber 0-4 50 was as jollocs: ThE reduction of cupric oxide by hydrogen is represented by the equation: It is a highly exothermic reaction and the amount of heat released varies only slightly with temperature (-21,430 cal per g-mole at 400°C). Most of the published studies on this system have been conducted at temperatures in the range of 34 to 280c.l-&apos; The concensus of opinion has been that at temperatures below 200°C the reaction is preceded by an induction period during which there is very little or no reduction. The length of this period diminishes as the temperature of the reaction is increased1l5 and aseawa found that at 280°C reduction starts practically immediately when the oxide is exposed to hydrogen gas. The existence of an induction, or incubation, period has led experimenters to believe that the reduction of CuO by hydrogen is catalyzed by metallic copper.&apos; Boldurev and rmolaev found that mechanical additions of powdered copper to oxide did not affect its reduction, although metallic copper produced during the reduction seemed to have a catalytic effect. At least three other authors2&apos;5&apos;7 have reported that addition of copper had no effect on the rate of reduction. Pease and alor&apos; observed that water vapor had a strong inhibiting effect on the reduction at 1503C, but its effect was greatly diminished at 200 C. Pavlychenko and Rubinchik5 studied this reaction at 159 to 235 C and found that, once the reaction had been initiated, there was no inhibiting effect due to the introduction of water in the hydrogen stream; at temperatures above 183°C there was no inhibiting effect due to water vapor, either before or during reaction. The same authors noted that the rate of reduction was independent of pressure in the range of 200 to 700 mm Hg. aseawa investigated the kinetics of the CuO-Hz system at 160 to 280°C and estimated the apparent activation energy at 14,000 cal per g-mole. A similar value (13,500 1200 cal per g-mole) was reported by ond&apos; in the temperature range 148 to 216°C. Bond also reported that there was no incubation period and that water vapor had no inhibiting effect on reduction at temperatures above 190 C. The above studies have been conducted at temperatures below 280°C and the physical configuration of the system under investigation has not been defined adequately. However, it is well-known that the mechanism of gas-solid reactions depends on a number of in series physical and chemical rate prcesses.&apos;&apos; It is, therefore, essential to include among the experimental factors the geometry of the solid system and the mass-transport characteristics of the reducing gas. Scott studied the reduction of packed beds of cupric oxide cylinders by Hz-He streams of very low hydrogen concentrations at temperatures 400 to 600 C, pressure of 10 to 30 atm, and gas velocity from 0.18 to 5.8 ft per sec (3 < Rep < 30). The reduction rate was found to be mainly controlled by diffusion through the boundary layer and through the pores of the reduced copper phase. The following correlation was proposed: Scott in an earlier work studied the reduction of fixed beds of cupric oxide wire and found that the rate of flow of the gas stream through the bed had a controlling effect on the rate of reduction. The same mass-transfer phenomenon was observed by Bond and clark13 on a similar reduction system. The analogy between mass and heat transfer through the boundary layer which exists between a solid surface and the bulk stream stems from the similarity of the differential equations representing these phenomena

INSTITUTE HEADQUARTERS, Hotel Statler. On Monday evening, Oct. 28, 1912, the visiting members and guests were informally received by the Local Committee at the Headquarters of the Institute at. the Hotel Statler. The evening was very pleasantly spent in renewing old acquaintances and friendships and in forming new ones. The first session, held Tuesday morning, Oct. 29, 1912, in the impressive Assembly-Room of the hotel, was called to order by David T. Croxton, Chairman of the Local Committee. Mr. Croxton introduced the Hon. Newton D. Baker, Mayor of Cleveland, who extended a cordial welcome to the members and guests present. James F. Kemp, President of the Institute, who subsequently presided at the meeting, responded in behalf of the Institute.

Rates of oxidation were studied for levitation-melted samples of Fe-C, Fe-Si, Fe-C-Si, Fe-C-P, Fe-C-Mn, and Fe-C-S alloys oxidized by mixtures of either 5 or 10 pct O2, in helium at several temperatures in the range 1850o to 2050°C. The concentrations of the oxidized elements decreased linearly with time. Mass transport in the gas phase was found to be the rate-controlling step. Ilowever, a mulliple -film model was necessary to account for the flux of iron and manganese vapor counter to the oxygen flow. THE advent of the basic oxygen and spray-refining processes of steelmaking has generated considerable interest in the kinetics of reactions between oxygen-bearing gases and liquid iron alloys. The object of this research was the determination of the role of mass transport in the gas and metal phases and of surface chemical reactions in the overall oxidation process. Of the reactions for elimination of elements dissolved in liquid iron, the oxidation of carbon has been investigated most extensively. Studies by Fuji and Ura,1 Fuji,&apos; and Gunji et a1.,3 done with pilot-scale basic oxygen furnaces, indicated that mass transport of gaseous oxygen was rate controlling when the metal carbon content was greater than 0.15 to 0.30 pct. When the carbon content was less than this critical amount, diffusion of carbon dissolved in the iron was thought to be rate limiting. L. A. Baker et a1.4,5 levitated samples of iron-carbon alloys and oxidized them in CO-CO2, CO-C02-He, and O2-He atmospheres at 1660°C. These investigators found that the metal carbon concentration decreased linearly with time and their samples exploded when the carbon content fell below about 0.8 pct. They concluded that the rate-limiting step was the transfer of oxidant to the gas-metal interface. A model based on this rate-limiting step predicted decarburization rates within a factor of two of those experimentally observed. The explosion of the samples was attributed to a shift in rate-controlling step from gas-phase mass transport to transport of carbon dissolved in the metal. L. A. Baker and R. G. ward6 and R. Baker7 used freely falling droplets to investigate oxidation kinetics. In both papers, the authors speculated that flame fronts may have been partially responsible for the lack of better agreement between experiment and theory. Swisher and Turkdogan8 oxidized liquid iron having an initial carbon content of 0.97 pct with CO-CO2 and CO-C02-Ar mixtures at 1580°C. They concluded that a surface reaction was the rate controlling step. Iron-silicon alloys have been oxidized by R. Baker7 and Filipov and Martynov.9 R. Baker 7 also studied iron-carbon-silicon alloys falling as liquid droplets through oxygen. He found that the rate of both carbon and silicon oxidation varied inversely with the drop radius. When the initial silicon concentration was greater than 6 pct, the samples cooled during their fall. Manganese oxidation has been studied by R. Baker,7 and by Filipov and Martynov.9 ward10 investigated the loss of manganese from liquid iron under vacuum. He found that mass transport of manganese vapor was rate limiting in argon atmospheres of 0.02 torr to 700 torr pressure. Iron-sulfur alloys were desulfurized with H2-He and H2-Ar mixtures by Peters et al.11 A model based on the transport of H2S from the gas-metal interface into the bulk gas gave fair agreement between the predictions of the model and the experimental results. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE Essentially, the technique consisted of using helium-oxygen gas mixtures to oxidize levitated samples of liquid binary and ternary iron-base alloys. The fused silica reaction tube is shown in Fig. 1. The coil design is similar to that of L. A. Baker et al.4&apos;5 A Tef-lon-sheathed, ferritic stainless steel lifter (B) and an alumina pedestal (C) were used to support the sample in the coil prior to levitation and for the recovery of the sample. TWO papers on health and safety were given Thursday afternoon when a joint session of the Health and Safety Committee and the Mining Methods Committee was held. T. T. Read presided and the first paper, on ventilation at Climax, was presented by the author, L. H. Glanville. In the subsequent discussion by Cloyd M. Smith, P. B. Bucky, B. F. Tillson, D. F. Haley, J. L. G. Weysser, and others a number of interesting points not covered by the paper, which appears in full in the January Mining Technology, were brought out. Ventilation troubles in mines so often hinge on the air being too hot and damp that it was interesting to hear of one where it is frequently too cold and too dry.

AUGUST began with a reminder that warfare was still in progress in the world, in that the Greeks, still at war with Turkey, threatened Constantinople in spite of the small British and French forces of occupation and opened a vista of international dangers. There was in this, moreover, a recollection that religious questions in India had prevented the British from permitting a real settlement of the Turkish question, wherein the absence of Russia as a great power is missed. Civil warfare also continued in Ireland and China. Even in the military way the world is far from being at peace. Bloody fighting between the Fascisti (anti-communists) and the com-munists in Italy led to several provinces being put under martial law, but after a while these disturbances were quelled. In the latter part of the month the assassination of Michael Collins in Ireland produced a great shock. From China, however, there came rather favorable news, indicating the early reintegration of that country, which sooner or later ought to play an important part in world affairs. Economically, instead of there being any improve-ment, there grew a clearer perception of how bad things really are. Italian politics were in chaos through inability to find anyone to accept the premiership and assume the all but hopeless task of averting national bankruptcy. The French, too, began to see their own position in true colors, and especially to see how in reconstruction they had incurred debts on the strength of what they hoped to collect from Germany, with at last the understanding that the Germans could not pay and that France herself was thereby put in a desper-ate economic position. As for the Germans, them-selves their Reichsbank defaulted on ordinary bills early in August. As the month wore on the value of marks fell more and more and at the end it appeared that Germany was on the verge of economic collapse. On Aug. 7, another international conference (with America again absent) was assembled in London, this being the thirteenth since the war, and there was a general feeling that it would be the last. The prime question was what is to be done about the German reparations, but underlying was the whole subject of the entente. The conference opened like a meeting of importunate creditors, doubtful whether the debtor had any tangible assets. On Aug. 14 this conference broke up without coming to any useful conclusion. Indeed, the acrimony among the premiers was so sharp that even the entente between Great Britain and France was endangered. The international situation was saved only by the Reparations Commission excusing the Germans from the payment of 50,000,000 gold marks that come due on Aug. 15 But although the entente was nominally preserved there is no longer any illusion about the interests of Great Britain and France being different and that henceforth they will play their own hands. The London conference was really an effort to maintain the partnership, and it failed.
